00:00on Fame, right? Where I played, you know that I was a dreamer on Fame? Everybody thought I was

00:06Puerto Rican because performing arts, the high school is based in New York, right? And the

00:12character, you know, that was in the film was half Puerto Rican in the actual film, right? So they

00:18thought, oh, that's the Latino that's good. Michael DiLorenzo, who also was a Latino student on the

00:24original Fame episodes, is Puerto Rican as well. So they thought that's what this character is.

00:30Well, my backstory, because I am Chicano, Mexican-American, and all of our characters

00:36that year, we were the new kids, me, Nia Peoples, and Janet Jackson. Our characters were based on

00:44our biographies. So they took us in the producers, they asked us questions about our childhood,

00:50and then they gave us stories that were based on that. So it turns out that my character,

00:54Jesse Velasquez, was from Juarez. He was living with his family in El Paso. They got raided by

01:02La Migra, and the family got sent back, and he escaped, made his way up to New York, was living

01:07by himself above a bodega, and getting himself through high school, trying to be a star because

01:14he wanted to make it and bring his family back. That was his story. And then I got busted in an

01:20episode, and I had to sing for my green card. You're a dreamer. I was a dreamer character,

01:25undocumented, on series television, and one of the most popular American series. Wow.

01:32So talk about being able to play an authentic character.
