00:00When you see this symbol, you know you're watching television that's educational and
00:10informational. The more you know on NBC. Hi, I'm Chanel Jones. Get ready for a treetop adventure
00:18to discover the baby animals of the forest. This is Wildchild. Today, this unmistakable
00:26marsupial has a tight relationship with its mom and one very special tree. And speaking
00:33of tree huggers, this great ape has a wild imagination. Plus, we unmask who this fascinating
00:40furry creature is. And the newest member of this towering species finds its feet. All
00:47that and so much more, starting now on Wildchild.
00:54Wildchild. The world's forests cover about one third of our planet. Trees, woodlands and meadows are home to animals who thrive in these leafy oxygen rich environments.
01:12The world's forests cover about one-third of our planet.
01:18Trees, woodlands, and meadows are home to animals
01:21who thrive in these leapy, oxygen-rich environments.
01:24But sometimes a single tree can provide not only shelter,
01:29but all the food and animal needs.
01:31Take a look.
01:34Forests are the lungs of the earth.
01:36During photosynthesis, leaves take in carbon dioxide
01:44and then release the oxygen we breathe.
01:53Clean air and water keep forest habitats brimming with life.
02:06Arboreal animals spend most of their lives up in the trees.
02:15Some, like this koala, Joey, and its mom, are quite picky.
02:22Not only do they live in eucalyptus trees,
02:25the leaves are about the only food they'll eat.
02:28Unlike other animals, koalas can digest these bitter, toxic leaves,
02:35which also double as a water source.
02:42These Australian furballs spend most of their time
02:45in the safety of the trees.
02:47But they do come down to earth
02:49when they need to find new trees to munch on.
02:53Of course, wherever mom goes, baby goes too.
02:56Piggybacking is what these joeys do best,
03:00gripping on tight with their strong claws.
03:07Whoa, it's a bumpy ride.
03:13This little hitchhiker has branched out on its own.
03:18But it's had enough freedom for now.
03:23Mom can drive the rest of the way.
03:26Plentiful eucalyptus forests are key
03:30to the survival of these photogenic marsupials.
03:35But up to 80% of their natural habitat is already gone.
03:44As night approaches, the koalas' main food source
03:47also serves as a safe spot to sleep.
03:51Koalas prefer higher branches where the leaves are best.
03:55It's time for some sweet koala dreams.
03:58But mom and Joey will both be in the perfect spot for breakfast.
04:05Another animal born to life in the trees is the orangutan.
04:09Like humans, they're in the great ape family of primates.
04:16Native to rainforests in Borneo and Indonesia,
04:19their stretchy way of moving around is called arboreal clamoring.
04:24That's a fancy way of saying tree climbing.
04:27Orangutans do it by using their long, strong arms and grippy toes
04:34to move through the branches.
04:35Swinging hand over hand is useful, too.
04:44Playtime in the tree tops is always entertaining.
05:03Mom is out to impress with her flexibility.
05:05But the baby orangutan has discovered that leaves are even more fun.
05:15They make excellent hats.
05:21Some moms don't understand the latest summer trends.
05:25But this one's got a great eye for fashion.
05:28Less is more?
05:35Definitely not.
05:43These expressive great apes prefer to eat fruit.
05:46But insects, eggs, and small animals might also be on the menu.
05:50If predators are scarce, orangutans may spend some time on the ground.
06:01But life in the safety of the branches
06:03suits most mothers and babies just fine.
06:14The bristly ancestor of domestic pigs,
06:17the wild boar is a fan of forest camouflage.
06:20The mothers, or sows, are kept very busy for a month,
06:29nursing their active babies.
06:37The piglets are born with earthy stripes
06:41to help them blend in with the leaf litter.
06:45They'll lose their racing stripes when they're four months old.
06:50They're blind.
06:52And so many ones have decided to run into the crop.
06:54Regarded as intelligent and extremely adaptable,
06:56there's never a dull moment
06:58when these little ones are around.
07:00In another forest,
07:09this mossy log is like a cloud
07:11for these owl hatchlings.
07:12they're so young they still have their egg teeth on the end of their beaks
07:19that's what the chicks use to crack out of their shells when they're hatching
07:27they drop off after a couple of days speaking of dropping off this family looks snug after all
07:38owls are nocturnal so daytime is mostly for napping
07:42but after a rest it's time to play owls bob their heads to more accurately judge distance
07:53and it's time to shake those tail feathers
07:57coming up these cubs are barely old enough to fish plus some folks say this ladybug is really
08:07a love book and for these giants hooves like snowshoes really come in handy when wild child
08:15returns we'll be right back to the more you know on nbc
08:21we now return to the more you know on nbc
08:27one of the largest creatures at home in the woods is the brown bear
08:41these cubs will one day be on top of the forest food chain carnivores rivaled in size only by their
08:54sister species the polar bear
09:01for these cubs when it comes to fishing with mom step one is clear
09:06take to the water
09:08take to the water
09:10nothing like a chilly swim to get the appetite going one of the cubs has already nabbed a salmon step
09:18step two is complete step three take the catch ashore bon appetit
09:30after a meal and that chilly fishing expedition the brown bear cubs are exhausted a quick snooze will recharge their batteries
09:40later on another set of cubs are burning off their excess energy in the woods
09:48brown bears live in the forests and mountains of europe asia and parts of north america
09:56but no matter how chilly the air might be these two many wrestlers won't feel it
10:02they're giving themselves a workout
10:07their thick shaggy coats keep them toasty warm
10:13although they appear to be alone mom is always in close proximity
10:20she'll protect her young ones until they're at least two years old
10:27brown bear fathers don't raise their cubs at all
10:31living a mostly solitary existence
10:38another more industrious pair of cubs are working on their excavation skills
10:45this is what growing claws are made for
10:50these hungry cubs are looking for anything good to eat
11:01scratching through the dirt these little gourmets will be on the hunt for worms beetles and other insects
11:10the forest floor is a bit like a playground and this pair is taking full advantage
11:16these boisterous cubs clearly have a big future ahead of them in this rich green habitat
11:31coming up
11:34coming up you might not guess the true identity of these beautiful nocturnal babies
11:40and these calves have big footsteps to follow in
11:44plus can a bright red beetle help you find your own true love
11:49we'll unpack the folklore
11:50stay with us
11:55we'll be right back to the more you know on nbc
12:01we now return to the more you know on nbc
12:03you might say a forest is like a building with four floors from the ground to the grasses to the shrubs to the tallest trees
12:18each forest layer is a unique habitat
12:20some animals like many primates and birds specialize in treetop living while others like lizards and worms prefer the ground floor
12:29let's see how many forest dwellers we can spot through the trees
12:35the first rays of light are streaming over the horizon encouraging the coastal rainforest animals to stir
12:42the first species to grace the skies this morning is the national bird of trinidad and tobago the vibrant scarlet ibis
12:57high in the treetops a mother is trying to tidy up the nest but her chick is making the job difficult
13:05even baby birds are good at getting under their parents feet
13:08a world away let's meet a very unusual wild child
13:16it looks like a raccoon but in fact it's the aptly named raccoon dog
13:25these interesting canids are indigenous to many parts of eastern asia
13:30pups are born in large litters and both parents raise them
13:35so when mom and dad are away searching for food the babies huddle together
13:41well usually
13:44this little one looks like it's playing hide and seek
13:48at four weeks old the pups are weaned
13:53and their striking facial patterns start to develop
13:55these juveniles are sniffing around practicing their foraging skills
14:03looking for small prey in edible plant material
14:10in japanese folklore raccoon dogs or tanuki are very popular
14:16statues of them are often placed outside shops and restaurants for good luck
14:21but these mass dogs are wild and not suitable for pets
14:26if luck is on their side they can enjoy roaming the forest of east asia for about seven years
14:36another distinctive forest dweller really brightens up the place
14:40albeit in a small way
14:41what we in the u.s. call the lady bug is also known as the lady bird
14:50this iconic beetle begins its life inside a small egg laid on a leaf
14:59but when the larvae hatch they waste no time actively hunting down their favorite foods
15:05larvae and aphids
15:08larvae and aphids
15:10by dining on these pesky sap sucking insects
15:12ladybugs make themselves very popular with gardeners
15:16at this phase ladybug larvae only faintly resemble their showy adult cells
15:29after several weeks the ladybug larvae attach themselves to a plant
15:33plant and begin to pupate
15:36their seven day metamorphosis is fascinating to watch
15:46mature ladybugs come with two sets of wings
15:49a delicate inner pair covered by leathery outer wings
15:54as pretty as ladybugs are their familiar red dome backs and black spots
15:59are actually a warning to any would-be predators
16:04the brighter they are the more toxic the beetle
16:07these beetles may be tiny but their influence across cultures is big
16:13ladybugs are credited with helping humans in love fertility and raising crops
16:19in europe they were once considered matchmakers
16:22so if a ladybug lands on you take a good look at who it lands on next
16:29coming up it's a wobbly new world for this little one
16:33but it won't be little for long
16:35find out more when wild child returns
16:37we'll be right back to the more you know on nbc
16:43we now return to the more you know on nbc
16:48in a north american forest these moose are out for an early stroll
17:05trudging through the snow is all in a day's work for moose the
17:15largest member of the deer family
17:17their large hooves make natural snow boots distributing their weight evenly
17:22and making plotting through the deep powder easier
17:25but when spring arrives it's time for a very special forest event
17:38a moose cat has just been born
17:41this little one can grow to be 6 foot 7 inches tall
17:46and weigh 1300 pounds
17:48after a quick clean from mom its first challenge is to get up on all fours
18:01it's a valiant first try
18:04what an incredible sight
18:09meanwhile in a japanese forest this young owl trio is wisely honing their vision
18:15one chick's looking at things from an upside down angle
18:28owls can't move their eyes so they have to move their heads and bodies to help triangulate their prey
18:35and change their point of view
18:38so on this tree branch two's company but threes a mesmerizing crowd
18:46thanks for traveling with us through the earth's forests
18:50in japan spending time among the trees is considered so relaxing it's called forest bathing
18:57next time you take a walk in the woods keep your eyes and ears peeled for forest creatures
