QOTD: Which player or moment etched itself into Texans lore yesterday?
Transcript
00:00Which players and or moments will etch themselves in Texans' lore
00:05after a big 36-29 comeback victory?
00:08That's the question of the day.
00:09Let us know what your answers are, what you're thinking on the text line,
00:12713-572-4610.
00:15I mean, I'll state the obvious one.
00:17I know there's a bunch, and I know you guys have some,
00:19but that Davis, those games where you're just going to be able to say 29-10.
00:26You know, 10 years from now, 15 years from now, remember that 29-10?
00:32You know, Texans were losing, and you won't have to say anything else.
00:36Like, to me, that's part of the lore, is just 29-10.
00:40Yeah, when you can shorthand it.
00:42Yeah.
00:42And you know, actually, what will be the, I mean, it's going to be the Davis-Mills game.
00:47Well, that, I'm going to say, that's what I was going to say.
00:48Right, I was like, I'll be the captain obvious here.
00:50Yeah, 29-10 is there, but we're just going to say the Davis-Mills game.
00:53The Mills run.
00:54The Mills run, I mean, that's the stuff of legend.
00:57And I'm not trying to, you know, go in all kinds of weird places.
01:00Davis-Mills this, Davis-Mills that.
01:01Oh, could CJ have done that?
01:05I mean, I've heard that already.
01:06Texas needed to start Davis-Mills for the rest of the season.
01:09I'm not saying that.
01:10We'll get there.
01:10What I am saying.
01:12It's a conversation that probably needs to be had.
01:14It will be had at some point.
01:16Maybe not today.
01:17Maybe not tomorrow, but someday we'll have that.
01:19But, that run, that run was legendary.
01:25Absolutely legendary.
01:26Yeah.
01:27I know that Trent Brown was talking in, he was talking in the locker room.
01:32And for him, he was like, it was almost telepathic that he was like, run Davis.
01:38Sacrifice your body.
01:39And Davis went and did it.
01:41Put his head down.
01:42I think we all, Texan, 713-572-416, where were you, like, mentally in that moment when you're looking up?
01:49Because I'm seeing there's time, but nothing is coming open.
01:53Right.
01:53And I'm just like, what is he going to do?
01:54All right, step up.
01:55And then he steps up.
01:56And then he's stepping up, not looking like he's still trying to find somewhere to go.
02:00He's running.
02:00I'm like, all right, cool.
02:03Yeah.
02:03Go, get big fella.
02:05Yeah.
02:05Go, giraffe.
02:06It was just like a skyscraper running.
02:08That's what it looked like to me.
02:09Did you see the smiles on the sideline afterward?
02:11They were just like, Davis, you did it.
02:14I can't believe you did it.
02:15Just laughing and giggling and slapping him on the back and everything.
02:18I'm curious.
02:19There were a lot of moments in this that are going to be remembered.
02:22I'm curious what you guys are thinking.
02:23Give me, what's tough is like, it's like a collection of moments, but it's just all of the red zone.
02:31It's all of the, like, touchdowns in the fourth quarter where you go, Higgins, jump ball.
02:36You get Schultz, jump ball.
02:38Actually, I say all the touchdowns.
02:40Don't forget the two-point conversion of Nico Collins give you a one-handed catch.
02:45Is the Stingley interception also in here?
02:48It's on my list.
02:50Talk about ball skills?
02:52Like, scooping it underneath, rolling, catching it at the same time.
02:58I think that's one of the moments.
02:59I think that's one of the moments that is going to etch itself into the fabric of this game.
03:03But also, it's going to be one of the highlights.
03:07When we recap Derek Stingley's career, that play is going to be shown.
03:11And the funny thing about that interception, interestingly enough, is I think that that was probably quietly a super important play.
03:19Because that's, like, near the end of the second quarter.
03:23I believe there's, like, a minute left in the first half.
03:25And as we've talked about, Cam Little can knock it down from a faraway way.
03:31Now to put them right about field goal range.
03:33Actually, no.
03:33They were right about probably the furthest extents of his field goal range.
03:37And then if they get that probably, what is that, like a seven-yard pass or whatever, they're probably not nice in and out there.
03:44And 23-10 is a little different than 20-10 at the half.
03:48I'm not trying to make the claim that this would have been absolutely insurmountable.
03:53But that absolutely colors the conversation just a little bit.
03:57That's a huge interception to keep this kind of in.
04:01Keep them tethered.
04:02Keep them kind of close.
04:03Yeah.
04:04Figured, do you have any moments that just immediately stood out?
04:06I think the one I thought about was the highlight that we came in with the Neil Hunter.
04:11Just three sacks because it's like, man, this is what they brought him in to do.
04:15Yep.
04:15And I know he didn't have – I think that was his first three-sack game as a Texan, I want to say.
04:21Yes, yes.
04:22But that's the type of production we was looking for, man.
04:25I think Will Anderson had an okay game, too.
04:27But, man, that's the Neil Hunter from Minnesota.
04:32That's the one that comes to my mind.
04:35In a weird way, it was kind of a – I mean, he's been here for a while and made incredible plays.
04:40But wasn't it also kind of like a sort of a coming-out moment for Daniil?
04:47Even though he's been here and made a bunch of plays?
04:49I think so.
04:50It's tough, too, because, you know, the Houston Texans kind of had a hard time getting at the quarterback
04:55in the last couple years.
04:56But, nah, this was that – oh, that's why y'all signed.
05:01Yes.
05:01Okay, this is what y'all get.
05:03Well, I mean, it's just – it was his podium moment.
05:07It was his stepping-to-the-spotline moment.
05:09He's been one of the best pass rushers this season.
05:13But he went from four sacks to seven-and-a-half sacks.
05:15He went from down there on the rankings of sacks.
05:19I think he's tied for second most sacks just off-ranked of that game.
05:25And as evidenced by what I'm talking about, four sacks in those previous how many games,
05:30eight games, he had had some quiet times over the last few games.
05:34Like, it had felt like – I know that in conversation – I know I've talked with Cody Stooks
05:39where he's like, hey, man, it'd be nice if they both show up together because it felt like it was all
05:43the Will Anderson games happening a whole bunch.
05:46And Daniil, like, stepping into the four and being like, no, I am going to be the guy that makes
05:50all of these plays.
05:52I am going to be the boogeyman for Trevor Lawrence in this game.
05:55That was absolutely massive.
05:57Yeah, the three-and-a-half sack game for Daniil Hunter is going to loom large in particular
06:02because he's a guy that kind of is fairly quiet in his production.
06:05It was cool to see it be really, really loud in this moment.
06:08I have another couple that were, I think, especially the second one, if I were a Jags fan,
06:13I would be livid about.
06:15But the first one, I mean, the Rankins return.
06:18The Rankins return, big man scoring a touchdown.
06:20You're going to be able to see – if you were at the game especially,
06:22you're going to be able to relive just how giddy, you know,
06:25as he's rumbling down the field, you were.
06:28It's over, Texans win, big man scores a touchdown.
06:31Here's the one that obviously it's not necessarily etched in Texans lore.
06:36I mean, maybe it is.
06:38But that pass interference down the right sideline against the Jags,
06:42I thought that was just two players, you know, kind of hand-fighting as the ball's about to –
06:50I think it set up the Texans about the two or three yards.
06:52Yeah, that one was a real light call.
06:55I thought there were some bad calls in this game.
06:56And, of course, I say that even still, understanding that the Texans won.
07:00I thought that one was a bad call.
07:01I thought the Henry pass interference that ultimately gave them a new set of downs
07:06close to the end zone was a bad call.
07:11But, yeah, like I'm with you there.
07:13That was the Christian Kirk wheel route that you were talking about.
07:15That's what it was, yeah.
07:16Where the ball was behind them.
07:18They were just kind of –
07:19Just a little hand-fighting, but he did have –
07:21The defender did have the arm down, but it was like, yeah, I'm with you there.
07:24Can we talk about –
07:25Yes, I see you 7-1-3.
07:26I see you 8-3-2.
07:27How about one big man Trent Brown?
07:30Dude, I didn't know he was going to be able to finish the game.
07:33I didn't either.
07:35But he did.
07:35He did, and he was – boy, Davis Mills, especially – which touchdown was it?
07:42Was it the – I forget which one.
07:44I mean, all day.
07:46Yeah.
07:46All day to stand back.
07:47I think that one is probably the Schultz touchdown that you're talking about.
07:50Yeah, I was going to say Schultz, so I think it must have been that one.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Absolutely fantastic job.
07:54There's only one play that he was visibly, like, really bad on in my memory,
07:58and I think that was he was trying to cut block Trayvon Walker,
08:01and Trayvon Walker just skirts past him, and then I think that's the one
08:05that Dalton Schultz is capable of getting the ball away,
08:08if memory serves, and might not be.
08:10There was another one where Trayvon Walker goes entirely unblocked,
08:13but that one felt like it was just a bad numbers situation on the front.
08:16Yeah.
08:16He was really good, and remember, he's how many months coming off
08:20of a patellar tendon tear?
08:21Mm-hmm.
08:22One of those things that a decade ago would have ended your career straight like that.
08:25Yeah.
08:25He's made his way back at an advanced age coming off of, you know,
08:29really, he hadn't done much, stepping in and immediately being of great import
08:33to this team and stepping in.
08:34I didn't even know he was going to start.
08:36Yeah.
08:36I thought they'd start Blake Fisher.
08:37Well, we'll talk more about that, because there's more questions
08:41with the offensive line.
08:43But he stepped up and really, really made a big deal,
08:47or, you know, handled things really well.
08:48All right, so this may not be lore, but I think in a few years,
08:51we might look back at this game and point to it for this guy.
08:56Did Tay Ersery lock up left tackle?
08:58I mean, Tay Ersery already had left tackle locked up.
09:00But, I mean, in terms of confidence level and he's, you know, growth
09:03and all, because we would still have some times when we would go,
09:08I don't know, but, I mean.
09:09The tough thing about it is, forecasting forward,
09:12I think he's got a really, really good future in front of him,
09:14so the idea of, like, in Texans lore is tough for me to see.
09:18However, he had a fantastic game, if for no other reason,
09:21which, of course, there are a lot of other reasons.
09:23That big boy rumbling is fun winning the big number 79.
09:26There was a nice little pin pull.
09:27I think that was actually the touchdown that Woody Marks scores on the left side
09:30on that little toss, little pin pull.
09:32Hey, he get outside and it just, I feel bad for all them small boys
09:36and cornerbacks and safeties that's out there,
09:38because big number 79, not only is he out there and he's capable of blocking,
09:41he runs.
09:42He moves, and Josh Hines-Allen didn't do a damn thing in this game.
09:46No!
09:47In fact, you know, just sort of rubbernecking and looking,
09:51taking pleasure in the Jaguars' misery, I was watching,
09:54I was watching some, or listening to some audio from the Jaguars' perspective,
09:59where they were torching him.
10:01They were like, where's 41?
10:03I mean, just absolutely blistering him.
10:06Can I give, and of course, we'll have opportunity to have more love
10:09for all these guys.
10:10I don't know if this is a lore type thing,
10:12but this did feel like a little bit of a takeover point for Woody Marks.
10:16Oh, yes.
10:17Woody Marks, he's the number one running back now, isn't he?
10:20It feels like it.
10:21I mean, if you look at the snap count, of course,
10:24in the context of Davis Mills running for a touchdown,
10:27on that play, I immediately look up and I go, oh, Woody Marks deserves a lot of credit.
10:31Great block.
10:31You talk about the block, but even just the wherewithal as a rookie to go,
10:35this defender is running with me, I see my guy going,
10:37rather than just trying to block him, just run him off the field.
10:40He will follow you because he's not looking back for that quarterback.
10:43They didn't have a thought in their mind that Davis Mills would run.
10:46Just keep running, he'll run with you, and then he turns around,
10:48boxes him out, touchdown, baby.
10:50And a big victory for the Houston Texans.
10:53A lot of credit, but of course, I think the real winner here is clearly
10:56the Davis Mills game, right?
10:57Davis Mills.
10:58This one, when you talk about lore, the lore is going to be there
11:01in the history of the Texans as Davis Mills going to win in a big-time game.
11:06All right.
