00:00Here it is, Davis looking, Davis with time, Davis pumps, Davis throws, right side, back at the end zone, caught, touchdown, Dalton Schultz, rock and roll!
00:14Back to back drives with touchdowns.
00:18I think we've identified that play there as the time where Mark Vandermeer got into his bag, one might say, in this game, because you got the rock and roll, he was like, oh yeah, we got something here.
00:29That made it a five-point game, and that was kind of the midway point of the comeback effort for your Houston Texans.
00:36They came back from down 19 points, 29-10 was the score late in the third quarter.
00:41The final, 36-29, Houston Texans, a huge, huge comeback on this Victory Reaction Monday, as we talk about all of those things here on Sports Radio 610.
00:52And I picked that play to come back for a particular reason, John Lopez, and I could just tell you that straight up, but I'm a little bit of a jerk.
00:58Can you guess what the reason was that I picked this play in particular?
01:02That play in particular?
01:04Yes.
01:04The protection.
01:05There you go.
01:06Yeah.
01:06Look at John Lopez picking it up.
01:08This absolutely was.
01:09Look at me.
01:09Just look at me.
01:10I'm proud of you.
01:11Look at that.
01:12I'm watching that playback right now, and I mean, you're just, these guys are just mushing.
01:17You can see a defensive line in the Jags, which, to be fair, this ain't a great defensive line, but they've got some names that you should be able to account for.
01:24You know, Trayvon Walker, obviously Josh Hines-Allen, that should create a little bit of harm for an opposing offense.
01:33They should have gotten there at least once.
01:34Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
01:35I mean, well, they did.
01:36They did get a sack on.
01:37Well, they should have had a better day.
01:39And they didn't, in part because, and particularly on that play, this offensive line stood up eventually.
01:44But, I mean, you've got to give credit where credit is due.
01:48Plays like that happened in the fourth quarter were happening because of this offensive line and not in spite of it and not even just with the offensive line being a neutral.
01:56Literally, I think the drive that you, the drive that leads to the first touchdown, the Higgins touchdown, it starts with, you know, I think them running duo.
02:06So, like, or maybe not entirely duo, but there's at least a two-duo block with your center, Jake Andrews, and one of the guards, I can't remember which one, where they just get that tackle and they move him up the field.
02:19And I was like, okay, I see what time it is.
02:21And you feel that time.
02:23In fact, the first part, the reason why they protected really well, this was Trent Brown after the game.
02:31This is cut one here.
02:33I thought that Bajani asked him a really good question, which was, you know, outside of, you know, what were you seeing that was able to provide you guys on the offensive line with so much success late?
02:43I know.
02:43I was noticing, even with it being my first game back, they were tired and I wasn't.
02:47And so that kind of just gives you a little energy and I was trying to talk to the group and motivate them and tell them, like, hey, lock in, let's go.
02:55Like, we can do this, you know what I mean?
02:57So, we showed up big.
02:59There's still a lot of room for improvement as a whole group, but we got a big win today.
03:05I'm glad you played that because that was one of the things I didn't get to when I was talking about, like, clearly Davis Mills, you know, legendary moment, terrific game.
03:13One that he'll never forget, clearly offensive line doing its job and quite a surprise after the way the game started and we'll get to that with the offensive line.
03:21And after all of the season prior as well.
03:24Yes.
03:25And Woody Marks and, you know, Dalton Schultz with the big cat.
03:28Hey, if you're going to talk about running backs, Nick Chubb looked a little fresh in a clear number two role.
03:34But when I was mentioning all that and absolutely those were huge factors, I kept saying the defense won this game.
03:41The defense won this game.
03:42Now, not by themselves, but the reason I said that is for that reason.
03:47They were going, they were getting off the field so quickly that the Jacksonville defense, I mean, they didn't have time to think, you know, much less get a, you know, one drink of Gatorade or whatever and get back out on the field.
03:59Then get pounded on again with, you know, the run game and these big dudes.
04:05I always say complimentary football.
04:07No, no, it was the epitome of complimentary football because you don't have that much success that easily offensively without that defense being gassed.
04:15Yeah.
04:15And some of it was, it took them a while, but they ultimately figured out the combination.
04:21I kind of took it, it kind of hit my ears of threat.
04:23I'm going to be entirely honest.
04:24When D'Amico Ryan's just, I mean, not even an hour ago, right, was talking to the media and talked about kind of the way that they started this game, the way that they cycled things around.
04:33And he was like, you know, it's factors, you know, things like practice and stuff that you guys don't see.
04:38And I think he kind of landed that large portion of talking about the offensive line with, we're going to continue something to the effect that we're going to continue cycling to fit until we figure out what works.
04:49And I was like, word.
04:51Yeah.
04:52Because that does not make me feel comfortable, right?
04:56You've already had this rotation of left guard.
04:58I did not understand the way that they started this game.
05:01John Lopez.
05:02Let me actually just start there.
05:03I was very happy to see Trent Brown coming back after, what is it, over a year from a patellar tendon.
05:09He talked about that.
05:10We might hear some of that audio here in a little bit about, you know, what it meant for him to come back from it.
05:14But, I mean, Trent Brown did not go through training camp with you.
05:18I don't know how many times he's actually gotten in really significant practice.
05:23I was expecting them to, you know, start at right tackle, Blake Fisher, the man who they have been having active, that's been on the field doing things.
05:31The man who they turned to when they needed to.
05:33Now, of course, he was the only tackle they had up and active.
05:36But the man who they turned to when Titus Howard went out with a concussion last week, they decided to go with Trent Brown.
05:42Seems like it worked.
05:45No, Jarrett Pearson left guard.
05:46Neither of the two guys that they've been rotating at that spot to this point.
05:51Let's just.
05:52And then they went with the most head scratching of it all.
05:56Are you familiar with City So?
05:59Or City So.
06:00No, I've heard it both ways.
06:01A man who's been on your practice squad?
06:03And I'm just going to sit here and be completely honest.
06:06I had no idea.
06:07Started at right guard.
06:08No idea.
06:09I think he got all of nine plays before they ultimately cycled him out.
06:11But, like, I didn't understand why they went this way at all.
06:15This is the ultimate do not ignore in victory.
06:19This is it.
06:20We are giddy about the way the Texans came back and won that game.
06:23They are back in the race, firmly entrenched in the race again.
06:28You know, they have work to do, but firmly entrenched in the race again because of what
06:31they did.
06:31Davis Mills, spectacular.
06:34Offensive, grit, defensive, complimentary football, which we just talked about.
06:38Awesome.
06:39But you cannot ignore how this game started.
06:42You just.
06:43Oh, why are you bringing them negative stuff, man?
06:45Look, for me, you got to highlight the negative stuff to be able to appreciate how well they
06:51finished the game.
06:51You media people.
06:52And I am not alone.
06:54And also, bringing up negative stuff.
06:56Yeah.
06:56Y'all are the coolest.
06:57In order to come back, you got to come back from something.
06:59And that was a large part of why they ended up in.
07:01I told you how those first.
07:03I mean, how they got into.
07:04They got into this, you know, mess to begin with.
07:06Their first five drives.
07:08I looked at because I was like, man, how are these ending?
07:10And some of this was in compliment or in the bid to try and give Davis Mills his respect
07:16for not being shaken, not his confidence, not shaking, because it easily could have
07:20happened.
07:20First drive, he throws an interception on the third play.
07:24Second drive on the kick turn by Tremont Smith, which is a great defense, or a great
07:28special teams play for the Jags, I got to say.
07:31The third drive is where we start going.
07:32It's a comedy of errors, including a hold on first down, offensive line, a fumbled snap,
07:37which I think is more Davis Mills, but I actually have to go back and see.
07:40No, it slipped through his hands, yeah.
07:42Okay, cool.
07:42And then there was a sack on a stunt, which again, offensive line.
07:46The fourth drive, you had a third and eight delay of game, which I'll put on Davis.
07:49And then you have a third and 13 tackle-tackle game happen.
07:52Again, another kind of stunt thing happened up front that you can't pick up.
07:55Offensive line, right?
07:56These are things that are happening.
07:57And then also, the fifth drive ended with some wasteful passes from inside the five, which
08:02again, comes back to Dalton, right?
08:03So again, Dalton, or sorry, not Dalton, Davis was able to maintain, keep his metal,
08:07come back and play well.
08:08But then also, the offensive line, with the weird combinations that they had in that
08:12first half, first quarters, that also helped them get into this hole.
08:18Look, man, I can appreciate you trolling me out there, Figgy.
08:21I really do, because I would have done the same.
08:24People are screaming at the radio right now.
08:25I would have done.
08:26Six GM being negative.
08:28We have been nothing but positive.
08:30They won, guys.
08:31Until now, because what you just laid out, Reggie, that doesn't, the offensive line changes
08:38that they made immediately.
08:39And by the way, we never saw C.D. Sal again after they pulled him from, that guy.
08:44The Canadian guard that plays.
08:46We never saw him again.
08:48I don't understand.
08:49You can call it negative.
08:50I do not.
08:51I just truly have never seen anything like it before.
08:55We were talking about it in the press box.
08:57I do not understand.
08:58You're rotating guards, Lakin Tomlinson and Juice Scruggs.
09:02You've got, you know, obviously, you know, Tide Howard and Ingram having the concussions
09:08or injuries.
09:10I don't understand how all of a sudden you say, you know what?
09:12I know we've been rotating these two dudes, but let's put C.D.
09:16Sal in there and see what happens.
09:18I don't understand.
09:19Call it what you want.
09:20I cannot comprehend that.
09:22Do you feel like, because, do you feel like they were just looking for anything at that
09:26point?
09:27They were just throwing stuff on the wall?
09:28That's how it read.
09:29Yeah.
09:30Like, again, I know that D'Amico Ryan will rightfully acknowledge that there are things
09:34that we are not privy to during the week that help them make their decision.
09:37Practice.
09:38He talked about even, like, the mental space that they were in.
09:40I don't think he was talking emotions.
09:42He said it was the culmination of a lot of things.
09:43Yes.
09:44Like, you know.
09:44That's his quote.
09:45Mental portion of it, which I imagine is a mental portion of the game.
09:48But only God knows, like, if they're taking into account, like, where's this guy at?
09:51Is this guy capable of bringing the nasty or whatever that we need on this day?
09:55I just don't know how you got it with those guys who, again, right out the gate, as a
09:58parent, not really bringing that same energy.
10:00So, it was very weird.
10:03However, I bring this back around to, I think they ultimately got to the right spot in this
10:07game.
10:07Yes, yes.
10:08And how much of this feels like it's sustainable or do you need to continue?
10:11Because Trent Brown allowed a single solitary pressure himself in this Jaguars game.
10:16I think D'Amico even talked about it when he was one up with the press rusher.
10:19He won those reps.
10:20Which, yes.
10:21Yes, he did.
10:22And, I mean, it made me go, where's he been?
10:25And especially with the issues that you've had, if you have a guy that you know is good,
10:30you don't have, I don't know how many offensive linemen you have on this team that you go,
10:34I know that they could play well.
10:36If he's going to play that well, does this then bring you to an opportunity where you
10:39haven't, you can maybe move Titus?
10:41I know Titus doesn't like moving.
10:43He likes playing that task.
10:45And he's played both of them at some points.
10:47Is that not a possibility of something?
10:49I mean, also, maybe you have your answer in Jared Patterson who played really well at guard
10:52today.
10:53Or yesterday, right.
10:54And Jared Patterson came in.
10:56To answer your question, all I know is I didn't know what to expect.
10:59I didn't have high expectations for Trent Brown.
11:02Man, he was good.
11:03He was good.
11:04He was mauling guys.
11:05He was protecting.
11:06You just laid it out.
11:07And I think one of the things that was cool was that he also was establishing a mental tone.
11:10Yeah, 100%.
11:12I mean, he was really good.
11:14The problem was whatever went into that decision to start those other dudes in the middle.
11:18And then you were playing catch-up from there.
11:20As you pointed out, you never would have, I shouldn't say that, but
11:23the odds are you wouldn't have been in this position had you started out with the offensive
11:28line that ultimately finished the game.
11:29So, yes, don't you think?
11:31You have to, like, what's the case to, say, you know, slap Trent Brown on his back, say
11:38nice job, and say take a seat?
11:39What's the benefit of that?
11:42How do you do it?
11:43Well, it might not even be a decision they can make this week, because as D'Amico Ryan
11:47said, you still got guys at concussion protocol.
11:50All the guys that are, not all of them, but the three main guys that you were talking about
11:53still remain at concussion protocol under the current time period.
11:56So we'll see if they can make it back.
11:58If Titus Howard is out again this week, I think it's very obvious that he starts again.
12:01But once Titus Howard gets back, that's where I was getting at.
12:04Once Titus comes back, do you put Titus at right tackle, or do you move him inside?
12:08I honestly don't see how you can take Trent Brown, if he can continue to do that, and this
12:13is the only evidence we had.
12:14He was mauling fools.
12:15How do you take him off the field?
12:18Yeah.
12:19And that kind of narrows it down, then.
12:20You don't take him off the field.
12:21That means you got to put Titus Howard inside.
12:23Yeah, and I do feel great, and this is where I will bring this back around to the positives,
12:29that I now feel very positive about another offensive lineman, and I have more positive
12:35vibes towards a second one.
12:37So, like, Jarrett Patterson was a guy that felt like, just by the nature of him falling
12:41out of the competition at left guard, you know, even all the way dating back to training
12:45camp, that maybe he was not a dude that you could play.
12:48Right.
12:48You got him out there, and he looked damn competent.
12:50And so, maybe he needs to be in consideration.
12:53Trent Brown obviously showed you that he can do this at the very, I mean, in just that
12:57one game, because it is one sample.
12:58However, with how, with the flying colors that he passed the question, I feel like I
13:05have confidence that you can utilize him, but the only thing that that scares me about
13:09is, now again, you are putting this to the hands of whoever the decision makers are ultimately,
13:13and I know D'Amico is the final decision maker, to have more options they have to try and
13:18sift to to get the right combination.
13:19And I feel like they've already done enough tweaking, and honestly, they found poor answers
13:24a decent amount, that I have questions as to whether they get the right answer.
13:27Not necessarily for the Titans game, because I think that that should be winnable regardless,
13:30but as the season continues.
13:32Yeah, the only thing I'm thinking about, too, is kind of to add on to the conversation, man.
13:37I don't know what to think of Blake Fisher, man.
13:39Yeah, oh, boy.
13:40That's a great point.
13:41Oh, boy.
13:41And remember, I kind of brought it up last week, like, hey, you never know, Trent Brown
13:46might step in, but y'all was kind of like, man, you don't have practice going, he ain't
13:50playing a year and a half or whatever.
13:52Yeah, we didn't know.
13:53Yeah, I was just kind of saying that tongue-in-cheek, but I ain't know you're going to step in and
13:58actually play better than Blake Fisher.
13:59Oh, he was miles better than Blake Fisher.
14:01Yeah, so that seemed like a fish at this point, man.
14:07A lot of people are weighing in, and a lot of our listeners, much the same way, had no
14:13idea who C.D.
14:14Sal was.
14:14But then again, you know, D'Amico just said a culmination of a lot of things during the
14:19week.
14:19Okay, we'll have to take his word for that, but could it have been some sort of disciplinary
14:26thing?
14:28Because Juice Scruggs didn't come into the second quarter.
14:30So the second quarter?
14:31So I think that was a thought, because there's not a lot of good or easy answers for us.
14:38So that's one of those things that comes up.
14:40Regardless, I think that I'm more positive towards this offensive line.
14:44Now, again, I've looked at this Jacksonville-Jags defensive line, and I'm like, you know, but
14:49regardless, the idea that you were able to not just go out, and they looked dominant in
14:54that fourth quarter on the offensive line.
14:55You all of a sudden have a little hope, you know, and by the way, he's always talked about
15:00he being D'Amico Ryans, we'll get our best five players on the field and go from there.
15:04He said it again today, and try to find the right combination.
15:07Again, taking him for his word, the best five are Ursary, Howard, Jake Andrews for what
15:13it's worth, Ingram, if he's healthy, and then Trent Brown.
15:18Yeah, this is quite an interesting dilemma that they'll have to figure out at some point.
15:23The point is not now, but it is good to be able to look at an offensive line and be able
15:28to say that they were not the worst of the four line units that you see in a particular
15:34game.
15:35Like, that is quite a development.
15:36Can you think back to the conversations we've had about the offensive line this year and
15:40going dating back into the offseason?
15:42Again, having that feeling that's really resonate with me during this game.
15:48All right, you're in the loop right here on Sports Radio 610.
15:50I'm really uncomfortable with the number of people that have seen the breaking news in
15:54the National Football League of Brian D'Abel being fired for the Giants and been like,
15:58that's who the Texans should go get for offensive coordinator.
16:00I'm surprised y'all ain't bring it up.
16:02That's the first thing I thought about.
16:04Y'all not that thirsty, are you?
16:06Please tell me you're not that.
16:07Like, please say psych.
16:08Certainly they are.
16:09Please say psych.
16:09He's a Patriots guy too, ain't he?
16:11I mean, yes.
16:12Yeah.
16:13Yes.
16:14Because remember, Brian D'Abel is the dude that Brian Flores brought up in that suit.
16:18Bill Belichick.
16:19About Bill Belichick.
16:20Belichick's trying to send it to D'Abel's congratulating him for the job before he even
16:24got his interview.
16:24He's like, I didn't need an interview yet.
16:25What are you talking about?
16:27Starting a whole mess.
16:29Belichick was like, ooh, my bad.
16:30Here we go.
16:31Now we got a whole lawsuit.
16:32Let me call a lawyer real quick.
16:34He said, no, wait right there.
16:35Wait right there.
16:36With all that being said, yes, no, I don't think I'm in at all on the Brian.
16:39But more power to you if that is your right as a fan to fanship the Texans and Brian D'Abel
16:47together.
16:48All right.
