00:00
I'd say everything went for you, you made it.
00:27
Not everything, I wouldn't say, but we're not going to get drawn into that.
00:31
I thought first half we edged it, gave me half a few chances.
00:35
I thought we looked more likely, controlled good parts of it.
00:40
Transition obviously cost us a little bit where we became a little bit disjointed.
00:45
They took the opportunity well, clearly.
00:47
I thought second half we were very, very good.
00:49
We hit really high levels in every phase of the game,
00:53
whatever it was with the ball, without it,
00:55
the bits in between and set pieces, clearly.
00:58
What was your take on those two penalty incidents, not dissimilar?
01:01
What was your take on the first one and then the second one?
01:03
I've purposely not looked at them back, to be honest,
01:06
because I don't want it to be the main thing I discussed today.
01:10
I don't think it's been the main reason why the game has been decided.
01:16
Some people might disagree with that.
01:18
I think on the balance of play, we have to get one of them,
01:21
would be my opinion from 50, 60 yards away
01:24
and from what the rest of the staff have discussed with me after the game.
01:27
Yeah, the officials have a difficult task on their hands, clearly.
01:31
All the challenges, all the bits and pieces,
01:33
there's a lot going on in the games.
01:35
Clearly, they were two key moments and decisions that needed to be made.
01:39
And even at 1-0 down, going into the second half,
01:42
you guys never, it seems as if you're preying on a fragility that exists
01:46
with Newcastle a little bit, you always believed you could get back into the game
01:49
and probably go on and win the game.
01:50
Was that belief always there and in part,
01:51
was that based on Newcastle's away records, stretching back the way of it?
01:56
No, it's based on us, really.
02:01
Really calm at half-time.
02:02
I wanted to just tweak a couple of aspects where I felt we could improve.
02:06
A bit more calmness in possession in certain areas of the pitch
02:10
rather than forcing passes and I think we did that really well.
02:13
Controlled transitions, again, pretty well.
02:15
Probably until, ironically, Newcastle went down to 10 men
02:20
where it became a little bit ragged and disjointed.
02:21
We couldn't quite get a grip of that.
02:24
But I just have real belief in what we can produce.
02:28
I didn't want us to panic, didn't want us to chase the game.
02:30
I felt it would or could come by doing the right things
02:34
and I think we maintain that.
02:37
A lot of things went against you.
02:38
You must be very pleased with how the players kept going,
02:42
didn't get frustrated but believed in what they're trying to do
02:47
and didn't let the negatives get down.
02:51
Yeah, I think what you're alluding to is true.
02:53
I think there was definitely a sense of setting things not going for us.
02:57
I think sometimes you can use that as an excuse to not perform
03:02
and let it get the better of you and I've been in that position obviously on the pitch.
03:07
I don't think I always dealt with it particularly well on the pitch
03:09
and I try and deal with it better off the pitch.
03:11
I think our players actually deal with it really, really well.
03:15
They stuck at it, stuck to the task and just kept...
03:19
They were relentless really in terms of getting back level
03:22
and then going for the winning goals.
03:25
And what pleased you most about the performance?
03:28
Because, as I said, there's so many possibilities,
03:30
the solution and the continuing creativity, the set-pieces,
03:35
obviously another goal from that throw-in.
03:38
Yes, so much really.
03:40
I think the selflessness of the team.
03:43
I think if you look at the attacking players,
03:45
I've just mentioned this in the dressing room,
03:47
all attackers want to attack.
03:49
It's just pretty obvious because they play in that position.
03:51
They want to do things with the ball, whether it's attacking crosses,
03:54
dribbling, shooting, whatever it is.
03:56
But I think if you look at our attacking players,
03:58
there's a real selflessness around how they defend, how they recover back,
04:04
how they do the basics of the game that are absolutely needed.
04:08
And I think the other aspect around being selfless is the squad,
04:13
the subs coming in, having a real impact,
04:16
which they have throughout the time I've been in charge,
04:18
where they've been not sulking.
04:20
I know people will be unhappy not to play.
04:22
I mention it quite frequently.
04:24
But I think that the impact they have is so crucial.
04:27
And again, today, they made a big influence in the game.
04:30
We've spoken a lot about Igor Tiago already this season.
04:33
So, again, great calmness, another penalty put away, second play-back running.
04:38
But also, at the early on, it's now hard to score.
04:42
Yeah, and a long time to wait to take the penalty, clearly, which isn't easy.
04:49
I think it was five and a half minutes someone just mentioned to me,
04:51
which is a long time to have to wait.
04:54
Whether that's right or not, I'm not quite sure.
04:57
But he's just in a great vein of form, playing full of confidence,
05:02
huge personality, clearly.
05:04
I think everybody can see that.
05:05
Loving life, loving football, and long may it continue.
05:08
Keith, have you ever seen a throw-in taker as good as Michael Carey days before?
05:15
Probably not, no.
05:16
Well, I certainly haven't worked with one as good.
05:20
He's pretty special.
05:20
I think he gets a lot of headlines, clearly, for that.
05:23
I think if you take that away, he's still a fantastic footballer.
05:26
The way he approaches the game, the way he likes to defend, has real pride in that.
05:31
And the constant development in his game, really keen to learn day-to-day,
05:36
week-to-week basis, which ties into what we do at the club.
05:41
But the long trial is pretty special, yeah.
05:42
Does he practice it a lot during the week, or is it just some of these guys
05:46
who doesn't really need to practice that much?
05:47
No, we practice all phases of play, and Michael's obviously pretty prevalent
05:52
in that phase of the game, so he practices pretty frequently, yeah.
05:56
Keith, did you lose the thread of the game around the penalty, like I did,
06:01
when we were in the dugout, it kind of lost its momentum.
06:06
It's just, I mean, it must be difficult, even for a coach, to keep up a bit.
06:10
I would have thought...
06:11
Can you elaborate what you mean?
06:12
Well, just the game, when the penalty was awarded,
06:16
well, apart from the first, the diving booking as well,
06:19
the game kind of, it was railroaded as a global coach.
06:23
It must be difficult, even for a coach, to keep up the thread.
06:27
You're throwing four Newcastle subs at one point, changing the goalkeeper.
06:31
Your job is to try and counter that. Was it difficult?
06:36
Yeah, I just wanted to keep...
06:38
I didn't want the momentum to come out of the game,
06:40
because I felt we were on top, so that was probably the big thing
06:43
I wanted to try and get across to the players.
06:46
You do get moments then to get a little bit of information on to some players,
06:49
to be able to just tweak things right side.
06:52
I wanted Michael Coyote to stay a little bit lower to leave Dango a bit higher,
06:56
more 1v1 scenarios, I thought that worked pretty well.
07:02
Yeah, I think you just need to stay in the game, stay focused.
07:04
Staff are obviously looking at it through a different lens as well
07:07
and feeding back little tidbits that may help things.
07:11
I thought the players stayed really focused during those moments that you're talking about.
07:16
Have you got a deputy long-throw taken?
07:20
I've got about five, yeah.
07:22
Oh, yeah?
07:23
Yeah, so your first time?
07:25
Yeah, we've got quite a few.
07:27
Kevin Sharer, Matty Hanson, Ethan Pinnock, we've got a little squad of them.
07:34
Were you given any clarification from the officials over the first penalty show?
07:39
Yeah, like I said, I haven't seen a backboard. No, I haven't.
07:50
I've said this before on a few contentious issues.
07:52
I don't really want to be the type of head coach that really criticises the officials
07:59
because I just don't think it's right. It's a difficult job at the best of times.
08:02
But, yeah, I think from what I'm hearing, it's probably a penalty.
08:09
But no, I haven't had any explanation around it, no.
08:13
On your home form, I think it's only one defeat and that was to Man City.
08:17
What did you put that down to? How crucial is that to be so good at home?
08:22
Yeah, we want it to be a place where it's pretty uncomfortable for the opposition to come.
08:27
The performances overall have been of a really, really high standard.
08:31
It's obviously really important in terms of what we want to achieve and how we take steps forward.
08:37
So, yeah, I think performances inevitably, they're pretty consistent.
08:41
They will bring the results and I think we've had that pretty much most of the games.
08:45
And I think the confidence has been growing from that.
08:48
The boys are touring up, the fans are engaged.
08:50
They're really making connections with some of the newer players and the new team, which it is.
08:57
It's just a feel-good factor clearly at home.
08:58
OK. Thank you very much, everybody.
09:02
Thank you very much, everybody.
