00:00I'd say everything went for you, you made it.
00:27Not everything, I wouldn't say, but we're not going to get drawn into that.
00:31I thought first half we edged it, gave me half a few chances.
00:35I thought we looked more likely, controlled good parts of it.
00:40Transition obviously cost us a little bit where we became a little bit disjointed.
00:45They took the opportunity well, clearly.
00:47I thought second half we were very, very good.
00:49We hit really high levels in every phase of the game,
00:53whatever it was with the ball, without it,
00:55the bits in between and set pieces, clearly.
00:58What was your take on those two penalty incidents, not dissimilar?
01:01What was your take on the first one and then the second one?
01:03I've purposely not looked at them back, to be honest,
01:06because I don't want it to be the main thing I discussed today.
01:10I don't think it's been the main reason why the game has been decided.
01:16Some people might disagree with that.
01:18I think on the balance of play, we have to get one of them,
01:21would be my opinion from 50, 60 yards away
01:24and from what the rest of the staff have discussed with me after the game.
01:27Yeah, the officials have a difficult task on their hands, clearly.
01:31All the challenges, all the bits and pieces,
01:33there's a lot going on in the games.
01:35Clearly, they were two key moments and decisions that needed to be made.
01:39And even at 1-0 down, going into the second half,
01:42you guys never, it seems as if you're preying on a fragility that exists
01:46with Newcastle a little bit, you always believed you could get back into the game
01:49and probably go on and win the game.
01:50Was that belief always there and in part,
01:51was that based on Newcastle's away records, stretching back the way of it?
01:56No, it's based on us, really.
02:01Really calm at half-time.
02:02I wanted to just tweak a couple of aspects where I felt we could improve.
02:06A bit more calmness in possession in certain areas of the pitch
02:10rather than forcing passes and I think we did that really well.
02:13Controlled transitions, again, pretty well.
02:15Probably until, ironically, Newcastle went down to 10 men
02:20where it became a little bit ragged and disjointed.
02:21We couldn't quite get a grip of that.
02:24But I just have real belief in what we can produce.
02:28I didn't want us to panic, didn't want us to chase the game.
02:30I felt it would or could come by doing the right things
02:34and I think we maintain that.
02:37A lot of things went against you.
02:38You must be very pleased with how the players kept going,
02:42didn't get frustrated but believed in what they're trying to do
02:47and didn't let the negatives get down.
02:51Yeah, I think what you're alluding to is true.
02:53I think there was definitely a sense of setting things not going for us.
02:57I think sometimes you can use that as an excuse to not perform
03:02and let it get the better of you and I've been in that position obviously on the pitch.
03:07I don't think I always dealt with it particularly well on the pitch
03:09and I try and deal with it better off the pitch.
03:11I think our players actually deal with it really, really well.
03:15They stuck at it, stuck to the task and just kept...
03:19They were relentless really in terms of getting back level
03:22and then going for the winning goals.
03:25And what pleased you most about the performance?
03:28Because, as I said, there's so many possibilities,
03:30the solution and the continuing creativity, the set-pieces,
03:35obviously another goal from that throw-in.
03:38Yes, so much really.
03:40I think the selflessness of the team.
03:43I think if you look at the attacking players,
03:45I've just mentioned this in the dressing room,
03:47all attackers want to attack.
03:49It's just pretty obvious because they play in that position.
03:51They want to do things with the ball, whether it's attacking crosses,
03:54dribbling, shooting, whatever it is.
03:56But I think if you look at our attacking players,
03:58there's a real selflessness around how they defend, how they recover back,
04:04how they do the basics of the game that are absolutely needed.
04:08And I think the other aspect around being selfless is the squad,
04:13the subs coming in, having a real impact,
04:16which they have throughout the time I've been in charge,
04:18where they've been not sulking.
04:20I know people will be unhappy not to play.
04:22I mention it quite frequently.
04:24But I think that the impact they have is so crucial.
04:27And again, today, they made a big influence in the game.
04:30We've spoken a lot about Igor Tiago already this season.
04:33So, again, great calmness, another penalty put away, second play-back running.
04:38But also, at the early on, it's now hard to score.
04:42Yeah, and a long time to wait to take the penalty, clearly, which isn't easy.
04:49I think it was five and a half minutes someone just mentioned to me,
04:51which is a long time to have to wait.
04:54Whether that's right or not, I'm not quite sure.
04:57But he's just in a great vein of form, playing full of confidence,
05:02huge personality, clearly.
05:04I think everybody can see that.
05:05Loving life, loving football, and long may it continue.
05:08Keith, have you ever seen a throw-in taker as good as Michael Carey days before?
05:15Probably not, no.
05:16Well, I certainly haven't worked with one as good.
05:20He's pretty special.
05:20I think he gets a lot of headlines, clearly, for that.
05:23I think if you take that away, he's still a fantastic footballer.
05:26The way he approaches the game, the way he likes to defend, has real pride in that.
05:31And the constant development in his game, really keen to learn day-to-day,
05:36week-to-week basis, which ties into what we do at the club.
05:41But the long trial is pretty special, yeah.
05:42Does he practice it a lot during the week, or is it just some of these guys
05:46who doesn't really need to practice that much?
05:47No, we practice all phases of play, and Michael's obviously pretty prevalent
05:52in that phase of the game, so he practices pretty frequently, yeah.
05:56Keith, did you lose the thread of the game around the penalty, like I did,
06:01when we were in the dugout, it kind of lost its momentum.
06:06It's just, I mean, it must be difficult, even for a coach, to keep up a bit.
06:10I would have thought...
06:11Can you elaborate what you mean?
06:12Well, just the game, when the penalty was awarded,
06:16well, apart from the first, the diving booking as well,
06:19the game kind of, it was railroaded as a global coach.
06:23It must be difficult, even for a coach, to keep up the thread.
06:27You're throwing four Newcastle subs at one point, changing the goalkeeper.
06:31Your job is to try and counter that. Was it difficult?
06:36Yeah, I just wanted to keep...
06:38I didn't want the momentum to come out of the game,
06:40because I felt we were on top, so that was probably the big thing
06:43I wanted to try and get across to the players.
06:46You do get moments then to get a little bit of information on to some players,
06:49to be able to just tweak things right side.
06:52I wanted Michael Coyote to stay a little bit lower to leave Dango a bit higher,
06:56more 1v1 scenarios, I thought that worked pretty well.
07:02Yeah, I think you just need to stay in the game, stay focused.
07:04Staff are obviously looking at it through a different lens as well
07:07and feeding back little tidbits that may help things.
07:11I thought the players stayed really focused during those moments that you're talking about.
07:16Have you got a deputy long-throw taken?
07:20I've got about five, yeah.
07:22Oh, yeah?
07:23Yeah, so your first time?
07:25Yeah, we've got quite a few.
07:27Kevin Sharer, Matty Hanson, Ethan Pinnock, we've got a little squad of them.
07:34Were you given any clarification from the officials over the first penalty show?
07:39Yeah, like I said, I haven't seen a backboard. No, I haven't.
07:50I've said this before on a few contentious issues.
07:52I don't really want to be the type of head coach that really criticises the officials
07:59because I just don't think it's right. It's a difficult job at the best of times.
08:02But, yeah, I think from what I'm hearing, it's probably a penalty.
08:09But no, I haven't had any explanation around it, no.
08:13On your home form, I think it's only one defeat and that was to Man City.
08:17What did you put that down to? How crucial is that to be so good at home?
08:22Yeah, we want it to be a place where it's pretty uncomfortable for the opposition to come.
08:27The performances overall have been of a really, really high standard.
08:31It's obviously really important in terms of what we want to achieve and how we take steps forward.
08:37So, yeah, I think performances inevitably, they're pretty consistent.
08:41They will bring the results and I think we've had that pretty much most of the games.
08:45And I think the confidence has been growing from that.
08:48The boys are touring up, the fans are engaged.
08:50They're really making connections with some of the newer players and the new team, which it is.
08:57It's just a feel-good factor clearly at home.
08:58OK. Thank you very much, everybody.
09:02Thank you very much, everybody.
