00:00Yeah, very disappointing that we, you know,
00:29we did get ourselves in a really good position again
00:31and we weren't able to really capitalise on that.
00:36I think it was always going to be a really tough game today.
00:39It was always going to be, you know, a real physical game with how they play
00:44and we needed to stand up to that.
00:46I thought we did in the first half and defended their set plays really well.
00:50But one moment really of switching off and a mistake,
00:53a couple of mistakes in the build-up to their first goal,
00:56and we paid the price and then, of course, we needed a big reaction to that goal really
01:01and we didn't get it.
01:03And yeah, very frustrating end to the game.
01:05Yeah, well, my initial feeling after that game today was it's different to West Ham.
01:21I think West Ham was a different kind of game today.
01:27I thought the players were there.
01:28I thought they were present.
01:29I thought they gave everything to the game physically.
01:31But I think it was clear for me, if you watch Newcastle regularly,
01:35we were lacking in confidence today.
01:36There was a lot of technical mistakes, which is really unlike us,
01:40especially in the middle of the pitch where we're usually really fluent.
01:43And that contributed then to putting us under pressure.
01:45So I think different feeling to West Ham, different emotions.
01:50I think it's really important today that I support the players.
01:52And we know we're good players.
01:55We know we've got a really good team.
01:58But we just need to stay grouped together in this difficult period.
02:01You knew who was going to be the throw-ins with the bomb bomb.
02:04Did the players execute what they've been asked to do in training?
02:09Well, we did for the majority.
02:13But the majority is not enough because it's one mistake
02:15and invariably you're going to get punished.
02:17So I thought we stood up to that test very well at times.
02:21But not for the first goal, of course.
02:23And ultimately that did change the game.
02:26Eddie, everyone was hoping for reaction lessons learned from last week.
02:31Why didn't that happen today?
02:32Is it simply confidence or is it something more?
02:35I think it's multi-factored.
02:37I don't think there's one thing.
02:39Confidence will now be an issue for sure
02:40because I think they're honest players.
02:42Really good people.
02:44They care.
02:44They want to do well.
02:47But the team's taken a few hits and I think that showed today.
02:50So we've got enough experience to respond in the right way.
02:54We've got enough experience to have been there before
02:56and then know how to deal with this moment.
02:58We know we're going to get criticised.
03:00We expect that.
03:01I don't see that being a problem for us
03:06as long as we stick together
03:08and we're really unified in this difficult period.
03:10Just on the criticism,
03:11when Renfrode were applying the pressure,
03:13they grabbed an equaliser after they had a let-off with the penalty.
03:16Why did it take until the second penalty in the red card
03:19before the changes finally came up?
03:21In what sense?
03:23In terms of Dan Boone sent off,
03:25penalty given away and then the substitutions.
03:27Yeah, I mean, of course we're discussing that
03:31as the game's going on,
03:31but those moments obviously impact everything
03:36because with hindsight you then go,
03:37well, you could have done something before that moment.
03:40But with Dan's height being pivotal from the set plays
03:42and with Jolenton going off,
03:44we then suddenly would have become very small.
03:46So they're big calls to make
03:47and yeah, of course with hindsight
03:49you possibly make a different decision.
03:51But of course in that moment
03:52I have to weigh up what I'm doing.
03:54Eddie, just on Nick Valdemar,
04:00and this isn't a criticism,
04:01but has his style impacted you,
04:03especially away from home,
04:04more than you would ever have realised?
04:06Given that you scored with your only shot on target a day,
04:09it was Nick's first touch in the box at the time.
04:11Is his style his preferred area
04:13while he probably leads the pitch,
04:15does that really impact you away from home?
04:17I don't think it's just on Nick
04:19and I think that's,
04:20you know, my job is to protect him
04:22and I think he's had a great start to his career here.
04:24Yeah, I think we haven't helped him
04:27be as effective as he can be,
04:30especially today.
04:31I thought it was a difficult game for him.
04:33Difficult again in the respect
04:35that he's the only fit centre forward we have.
04:36So again, more pressure
04:37and more weight on his shoulders
04:39when possibly I'd like to have made
04:42a different decision for him.
04:45But yeah, it's like the team has to do better.
04:49We have to do better in helping him
04:50and supporting him.
04:52He's giving everything currently
04:54and he's given everything since his beer
04:55and he's had to take that weight
04:56on his shoulders on his own.
04:57It's not been easy.
04:58But of course, we need to look at also
05:00how we're performing away from home
05:01and if there's changes to be made,
05:02then we need to make them.
05:04Eddie, what was the mood like
05:06in the dressing room of full time there?
05:07Are any of the votes
05:08that keep the experienced players
05:11speaking up and simply saying
05:13look, this isn't good enough right now?
05:16Yeah, we've got an experienced team
05:17and occasionally those players may speak.
05:22But I think it's important for me to speak
05:24and always is important for me to speak
05:25and give my message to the team.
05:29In times of adversity and difficulty
05:31I think is when your true character is tested
05:33and when your true character is revealed.
05:34And I think we need to be very calm
05:37but we need to be measured
05:38and we need to be reflective
05:39and we need to then come out of this period
05:41with a way forward
05:42and a way that we're going to be successful
05:44away from home and at home
05:45and get some more points.
05:47And what would your message to support us be
05:49who are perhaps looking at the severe form
05:51and are concerned about where
05:52the Premier League season may be going?
05:55My message is that we know
05:57it's not good enough
05:58and I take full responsibility for that
06:00and the work to putting that right
06:03starts now
06:03and that's all that I can do in this moment.
06:06Any updates on the injuries
06:09Anthony Gordon as well as Jolint
06:11and Nick Pope?
06:13What information do you have?
06:15Nick Pope suffered concussion
06:17and that's why we took him off.
06:18As soon as we were made aware of that
06:20then he was withdrawn.
06:23Jolint I'm not sure
06:24it looked like a knock
06:25but I haven't had a full discussion
06:27or debrief from the medical team on him.
06:29Anthony has a minor injury
06:31so he'll miss England.
06:32Is it a good thing to have
06:36the international break coming up now
06:38after the results of the league like that
06:42or would you have preferred
06:43to have the players still together?
06:47Yeah, I think I'd have preferred
06:48another game quite quickly
06:49but maybe the period of reflection
06:51and the period to allow us to reset
06:54is a good thing.
06:55We will work hard during the break
06:56and I think the biggest thing
06:59is to make sure we stay together
07:00and we're motivated
07:01for what's to come.
07:05Eddie, last year
07:05you obviously had the love
07:06of coming here
07:07and losing that game
07:08and afterwards
07:08there was sort of a reshuffle
07:10in the side
07:10and of tonight
07:10we moved to number six.
07:12Do you see
07:12that there needs to be
07:13a fundamental reset
07:15away from home
07:15in terms of how you approach
07:16those games
07:17or was it not as simple as that?
07:20Well, if there is
07:21a reshuffle
07:22it needs to be done
07:23in the right way
07:24it needs to be done
07:25with analysis
07:25and then detailed
07:28thought as to
07:30how the team's going to go forward
07:31and I'm not adverse to that
07:32I'm never going to do
07:33the same thing continually
07:34and we haven't done
07:35and expect a different result
07:36I don't think that's right
07:37so if there is changes
07:39we'll look at it
07:40and we'll try and figure out
07:41what those changes need to be.
07:42You mentioned losing the lead
07:43at West Ham
07:44last week
07:44and yesterday
07:45I think you've lost
07:45three times
07:47in the last five
07:47you've taken the lead
07:48in a game
07:49you've lost them
07:50I think it was the previous 56
07:51before that
07:52where do you think
07:53that issue has come from?
07:54I think it's probably associated
07:56with our lack of goals
07:57really
07:57I think there's
07:58going 1-0 up today
07:59you'd expect us to
08:00capitalise on that
08:01and establish ourselves
08:02as a stronger team
08:03in the game
08:03I don't think we did
08:04I think we became weaker
08:05in the game
08:05for the goal
08:06which was the same
08:07at West Ham
08:08so that's a
08:09big frustration for me
08:10I want my teams to attack
08:11and to be continually
08:12looking to score
08:13we don't look like
08:15that team currently
08:15so that's why I said earlier
08:17we have issues to fix
08:19there's no doubt about that
08:20and the process for that
08:21starts now.
08:22Gerard?
08:23Dan, the head of this game
08:25said this was a game
08:26to earn your money
08:26as a player
08:27and how frustrated are you
08:29that you've come to
08:29another top away
08:30ground
08:31having done well at home
08:32again mid-week
08:34and then it just doesn't
08:35come together yet again
08:36on the goal?
08:37Yep
08:38I can't
08:40sort of give you
08:41a satisfactory answer
08:44to that
08:44because it's not
08:45satisfactory
08:46the fact that we
08:46haven't done our jobs
08:47and we feel
08:48we've let everybody down
08:49I think when you do that
08:51when you make mistakes
08:52it's not intentional
08:53from anyone
08:54and all you can do
08:56is hold your hands up
08:57and go right
08:57okay let's try and fix it
08:58and that's what we're
08:59going to try and do
08:59you look at the table
09:01now two points
09:02for the relegation
09:02so it's not a concern
09:04the confidence
09:05and you get the results
09:06at home
09:07but then it keeps happening
09:08and you can kind of get
09:09dragged into a place
09:10you don't want to be
09:11yeah absolutely
09:12it's the wrong end
09:14of the table for us
09:14but it is what it is
09:15that's the reality
09:16and we can't change it
09:17all we can do
09:18is affect our next
09:20performances
09:20to try and change it
09:21and we knew
09:23that potentially
09:24the start of the season
09:25would be slightly
09:26choppy for us
09:26as we entered
09:27into a transitional
09:30period with the team
09:31but there's no excuses
09:33for us
09:33as I say
09:33we take full accountability
09:34for what we're delivering
09:36and only we can change it
09:38thanks very much everyone
09:39yeah you won't go
09:43with England
09:43yeah it's 12 days
09:45I think
09:45thank you
09:46thanks very much
