00:00You alright?
00:10You alright?
00:11You alright?
00:15You alright?
00:27Want your starters off?
00:29It goes without saying, Eddie, you must be absolutely delighted.
00:35We've sat here and talked to you away from home plenty of times this season
00:38and it hasn't gone so well, but that was superb tonight.
00:41You could say that again.
00:42I'm just pleased I don't have to answer the dreaded questions on it.
00:46We've got a lot of work to do, obviously, to consistently say
00:51that we've solved some of the issues that we've had,
00:55but it's a step forward and that's a big moment for us,
00:58confidence-wise, for the general feeling,
01:01back-to-back wins in the Premier League, that will help us no end.
01:04And now we have two home games that we need to try and capitalise on.
01:07And how pleasing particularly that you've made changes tonight.
01:11You've brought in the likes of Lewis, Anthony,
01:13who maybe haven't played an awful lot of football in the last couple of months,
01:16but they were big, big parts of that win tonight for you.
01:20Yeah, they were. I was really pleased for the squad today
01:22because it was a squad victory, really.
01:25We made changes because I wanted no fatigue on the pitch.
01:29I didn't want the feeling that I had after the Brentford game,
01:32the West Ham game, where I felt we were tired and lethargic.
01:36So with that in mind, I think we have to trust the squad and use the squad.
01:40And they repaid that faith.
01:44The players that came in, I thought, were excellent.
01:45The players that remained from the previous games did well too.
01:49I thought we had a good look about us.
01:50I thought we had our athleticism and pace in the right areas of the pitch.
01:54And yeah, the players played very well.
01:57It's interesting.
01:58You always say that new signings take a bit of time to adjust to you,
02:01but the three of them today, Malik Chow, Volta Marder,
02:04and Anthony Ilanga played a really big part in that victory today,
02:07which must give you some satisfaction as well.
02:10Yeah, I think you can never sort of tell how long it's going to take
02:14for any player to settle fully.
02:17I think all three players that you mentioned there
02:19can easily play and do well in the team.
02:22Just some take longer to get to grips with tactically how we do things
02:26or our style of play.
02:28But I'm pleased with all three players that you mentioned.
02:30All the summer signings, I believe, are good players
02:32and will help us long-term.
02:34It was great to see Nick score again and Anthony assist him.
02:38Scoring from set plays has been something we haven't done enough.
02:41It was great to see that aspect of our play very strong today as well.
02:45So I think there's a lot of positives to take.
02:46How important are your two young English full-backs as well?
02:50Hugely important for us.
02:52We're under no illusions.
02:54They're big players.
02:54They bring their athleticism, their technical quality,
02:59their ability to get up and down the pitch.
03:01I thought they were both very good today.
03:02Lewis suffered a bit of cramp at the end.
03:04So we need to continue to build up his resilience and his robustness.
03:08But two good performances.
03:13Eddie, if Nick Pope had been fitted here,
03:16would he have started the game?
03:18Good try.
03:19That's something for me to know, I think.
03:25Nick, we're disappointed to lose him.
03:27You know, we can't afford to lose any player.
03:30He suffered an injury just towards the end of training.
03:34I didn't name the team yesterday.
03:37So we were just training as normal.
03:39And he just, I think, wrong-footed on a shot
03:42and just felt something in his groin.
03:43More after training than sort of in that moment.
03:45And, yeah, we hope he's not out for long.
03:48We need him back.
03:49He'll have a scan in the next few days to find the damage.
03:52Ram's still coming in.
03:54Couldn't have had a better night.
03:56I mean, let one in at the end,
03:57but couldn't have had a better night.
03:58Really give the team a different dimension in some ways.
04:01Yeah, I would say Nick and Aaron are very different goalkeepers.
04:05They've got different strengths.
04:06Still very effective, both of them.
04:08And Aaron, I think, showed his qualities with the ball at his feet today.
04:11He distributed the ball very well.
04:13It wasn't overly work necessarily in terms of shots,
04:15but what he did have to handle it, I thought he did well.
04:18I don't think he'd do much with the goal.
04:20So I think it's a good day for him
04:22and for the back four in front of him.
04:24Just a good day for the team in general, really.
04:26Eddie, it felt like you got around Nick a lot more up the top end.
04:38Some of those games that you referenced there,
04:39he was perhaps a bit isolated,
04:41but it felt like you got up the pitch
04:42and he was a lot more involved.
04:44Yeah, I'd agree with that.
04:45I think possibly linked to athleticism as well
04:49and freshness and the ability for the players to run.
04:51As I said, those two games that I mentioned
04:53that stick out in my mind as negatives were we looked lethargic and tired.
04:57And the European games take so much out of you in different ways.
05:01We obviously had a very late night in Marseille on Tuesday,
05:04travelling back,
05:04and I had to try and get the week right
05:07to try and get the players entering this pitch
05:09physically able to match Everton
05:11and surpass Everton if possible physically.
05:13And I felt that was a big sort of tick in the box for the players
05:17because on midfield where the game's won and lost for me every week,
05:22I thought we were really strong.
05:23Louis played a big part in that.
05:24Congratulations to him on a really strong performance,
05:26goal and assist.
05:27A really good day for him personally, I think.
05:29Yeah, and I guess for him as well,
05:31to try and break into that midfield
05:33is probably your strongest part of the team, isn't it?
05:35I mean, top players in there,
05:37but for him to come on and give you that option now moving forward,
05:40it just makes the squad look a lot stronger.
05:42Yeah, it's not only Louis.
05:44I mean, you've got Joe Willock coming on the pitch
05:46and doing well again today after doing well in midweek.
05:48Jacob Ramsey coming on and doing really well again.
05:51So I think the strength of that unit is improving all the time
05:55and it's given me a lot of good options to have,
05:57especially like today I put the two midfielders on in wide areas
05:59and they helped us see the game out.
06:03You want the options, you want the strength.
06:05We've got a few injuries at the moment,
06:06which we need to try and navigate this period
06:10and try and get as many players back as quickly as possible.
06:12Eddie, the moments at the end when you were in front of the fans
06:17and just soaking in that moment,
06:18that must have been important for you and the players
06:21as well as the fans, really.
06:23Yeah, really important because obviously we haven't had that feeling enough
06:27or at all.
06:28I felt a real sense of disappointment and regret really in Marseille
06:33because the supporters have had a difficult journey there.
06:36It was a difficult experience for some of them
06:38and I felt we let them down to a degree.
06:40We couldn't get the win or a positive result
06:43that maybe our performance deserved,
06:45but I think our supporters deserve.
06:48And very pleased today that we're able to put that right
06:51and give them that winning feeling to travel back to Newcastle with.
06:53You'll know by sight of Malik Chau,
07:05who got a player he was,
07:06but has he surprised you given how quick he's adapted to the Premier League?
07:11Yeah, again, like following on from Luke's question,
07:13you never quite know how long it will take a player
07:15to feel comfortable and confident within the team
07:18and with their peers and in the way that we play.
07:21I think Malik had a little period where he had to wait.
07:25Fabi and Dan had done really, really well.
07:27Then I think Fabi got a concussion.
07:29He got an opportunity and he's never looked back from that moment.
07:31And today I thought he was outstanding.
07:33Two great goals, two huge moments for us.
07:37But he's been really consistent.
07:39I think that's the biggest compliment I can give him.
07:41He's physically been able to handle the games.
07:45He's looked really strong and another top performance.
07:48And have you overcome a mental blockage today by winning on the road?
07:51Time will tell.
07:52I'm not going to make any massive statement after winning today.
07:56It's a good feeling.
07:57It's an important win for us.
07:58I thought we went well as well.
08:00I think that was important.
08:01We scored goals, which we haven't done enough of.
08:04But there's a long way to go.
08:10Hi, Eddie.
08:11You said yesterday about how good Lewis made his crossing quality was.
08:14And obviously we saw that come into fruition straight away
08:16with the corner for the first goal.
08:18And the set pieces all night seem to cause them real problems.
08:20How pleased were you with that aspect of the game tonight?
08:22Very pleased.
08:23It's something we haven't done well enough so far this season.
08:26I think historically we've been very, very good from set plays.
08:28We've always scored goals and looked like we're going to score.
08:30And I think we've been unfortunate a few times that we haven't scored more.
08:34I think the chances have been there for us.
08:36But today, Malik scored two great headers.
08:41Big moments.
08:42You need to be on the right side of set plays.
08:44If you're on the wrong side, it will cost you games,
08:45as the Arsenal game did for us.
08:48But also can win your games.
08:50And we're delighted to be on the right side today.
08:52And just in terms of the Premier League,
08:53obviously it's a second successive win now after beating Man City last weekend.
08:56How important do you think it is now to sort of build that momentum
08:59when the table's still congested?
09:01Yeah, well, it's huge.
09:02The two home games we have now.
09:04This is a big week for us.
09:05It's rare you have midweek Premier League games.
09:07So obviously we've been used to that with Europe.
09:10But this is the Premier League.
09:11This is so important.
09:12And Tottenham and Burnley at home, two massive games, two tough games.
09:16But we'll look forward to it after back-to-back wins.
09:22Hi, Eddie.
09:22You touched on Lewis Miley quite a bit.
09:24His 60th game for the club today.
09:26Is it almost easy to forget how young he is,
09:29given the maturity and quality he played with,
09:31particularly today but over the course of the past few years as well?
09:34It is very easy because when you see him play,
09:39he plays with a real maturity.
09:40He very rarely gets flustered about anything.
09:43He's very level, very calm.
09:45Not your normal average teenager.
09:48So the quality that he possesses, I think he's always had.
09:52I think athletically he's getting better.
09:53Technically, I think the goal is a great example of his technical quality,
09:59but the assist is even more pleasing for me.
10:03He's got a real challenge on to get more game time with the midfield that we have,
10:06but I certainly back him to do it.
10:08Sven Botman missed out today.
10:10You mentioned his back yesterday.
10:11Any update on him?
10:13He's been to see a specialist, I think,
10:15or he's going to see a specialist, should I say.
10:17Fingers crossed it's not too long.
10:19Any absence with a player of Sven's qualities,
10:22especially with the injuries that he has had,
10:25is a blow for us.
10:26So fingers crossed.
10:30Cheers, guys.
