00:00Being around family can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very chaotic.
00:05And what time of year does that chaos really start to heat up?
00:08The holiday season, of course. From dealing with insensitive family members,
00:12to stressing about getting the right gift, to anything that could possibly go wrong
00:17going wrong, it's a stressful time, to say the least.
00:20Well, I don't know what to say except it's Christmas and we're all in misery.
00:25This on-screen trope arose from a very real issue many of us can relate to.
00:29When the family comes together, chaos ensues.
00:39So why do we adore seeing this trope play out time and time again?
00:43What can we gain from watching a family nearly fall apart in an often hilarious way?
00:48Please lord, help us not use terms like imbecile or senile old man.
00:52Let's take a closer look at the holiday family chaos trope
00:55to unpack why, at its core, it's actually surprisingly heartwarming and encouraging.
01:00The holiday season, at least in the United States, is a period of about eight weeks,
01:05during which multiple holidays occur back-to-back, and sometimes even overlapping,
01:10including Halloween, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's Eve.
01:15Allow me to introduce you to a little something that I like to call...
01:20Chrismaka.
01:22Chrismaka?
01:22That's right, it's a new holiday, Ryan, and it's sweeping the nation.
01:25It's a time filled with celebration and tradition, and while many people look forward
01:29to the festivities, there are also those who dread it.
01:33Too much family time triggers depression, repressed childhood rage,
01:38bitter disputes over the remote, and way too much alcohol.
01:41These people absolutely despise the holidays for many different reasons,
01:45but a big one that pops up on screen quite often is the result of events that happened
01:50during their childhood on the specific holiday.
01:53Chandler Bing from Friends, for example, hates Thanksgiving. Why?
01:57We've just finished this magnificent Thanksgiving dinner.
01:59I have, and I remember this part vividly, a mouthful of pumpkin pie,
02:04and this is the moment my parents choose to tell me they're getting divorced.
02:08Yeah, we don't blame you for not liking Thanksgiving, Chandler.
02:10Jake Peralta from Brooklyn Nine-Nine also despises Thanksgiving,
02:14because growing up, for him, it was not the joyous family-filled holiday from the movies.
02:19It's a sucky holiday. It's always sucked.
02:21My mom worked, my dad was gone, and I sat at home watching football.
02:24While there are many famous solo holiday haters who, in their loneliness and sadness,
02:29turn inwards and reject the joy of the holidays,
02:31Santa, what's Christmas really about?
02:33Vengeance!
02:36Err, I mean, presents.
02:40So often on screen, we see how celebrating with others,
02:43whether by choice or due to obligation, can turn south pretty quickly.
02:48Everything about the holidays can be so stressful,
02:50from traveling to seeing family to finding gifts and everything else.
02:54But thankfully, this video's sponsor, Cycling Frog,
02:57is here to help you find your own moments of peace this holiday season.

03:20but is also great to enjoy even if you have a lower tolerance,
03:23because you can just sip it over a few sittings.
03:25Either way, it'll definitely bring some relaxing moments to your hectic holiday season.
03:30In addition to the 50mg, they also have 5mg and 2mg seltzers,
03:34so there's a great option for you no matter what level of THC you're looking for.

04:01Sometimes the problem isn't with the holidays and cheer surrounding them,
04:05but the expectation of being around family that comes with them.
04:09Garmin, I need you to check the Branzino.
04:11I feel like that was a shock, Garmin.
04:12This is why I didn't want to come home.
04:14This is why.
04:14Oh, f**k you.
04:15What the f**k?
04:16What?
04:17What the f**k would you say that?
04:18Not every family is quite that stressful,
04:20but it can still be a trying time for everyone involved.
04:23Everyone in this family hates me.
04:25Then maybe you should ask Santa for a new family.
04:28I don't want a new family. I don't want any family. Families suck.
04:31And honestly, who can blame Kevin?
04:33His family accidentally left him behind when they left for their trip to Paris.
04:37What kind of mother am I?
04:39And the movie's first 10 minutes exemplify the chaos that can exist in a big family
04:43during the holidays, and how Kevin, being the youngest, is at the bottom of the totem pole.
04:48His siblings bully him, and his parents dismiss him.
04:51While he's certainly no perfect child,
04:53He was in the garage, he can't play with the glue gun.
04:56Didn't we talk about that?
04:57Did I burn down the joint?
04:59I don't think so.
05:00He certainly gets the short end of the stick.
05:02He does make the most of it, though.
05:04Toysy singing, let's be Johnny Depp, the halls with vows of heart.
05:11But even when you do like your family, having everyone in one place can still be stressful.
05:16Especially when, like in modern family, there are a lot of big personalities in one room.
05:21I can't believe you all couldn't hold it together for one meal and not argue.
05:26Cam, this is what we always do on the holidays.
05:28We can always count on the Delgado Pritchetts, the Tucker Pritchetts,
05:32and the Dunfys to go all out for the holidays.
05:35Unfortunately, while Claire loves Halloween, she often goes a little too far.
05:40Every Halloween, we have the best house.
05:43Last year, I took things to a whole new level,
05:45but apparently it was too scary for some kids.
05:48And one adult.
05:49Arguments usually arise during Thanksgiving,
05:51whether it's all the compounded lies reaching their boiling point,
05:54or mistakes when it comes to the Thanksgiving dinner.
05:57Cranking up the heat, must have dried it up and shrug it!
06:00It's starting!
06:01The family always has such high expectations for Christmas,
06:04but each of their good intentions ends up wreaking some more havoc.
06:08Modern Family Season 3 Christmas episode, and arguably the best one,
06:12brings the family together for some last-minute plans before everyone leaves on vacation.
06:16By tonight, we could be celebrating Christmas, right?
06:19I guess we can do that.
06:20Of course we can!
06:21Have you ever heard of Express Christmas?
06:23The day, otherwise known as Christmas Express, rapidly devolves into chaos,
06:27when they only have a few hours to shop for gifts, get the tree,
06:31and make a Christmas dinner.
06:32Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, the idea fails miserably.
06:37Not even defrosted.
06:38Fine, Claire! You want them defrosted?
06:40Yeah.
06:40Mary, break it up when you're doing this!
06:44Since the holiday season usually brings all the family together,
06:47unfortunately, that also brings people with often very different opinions
06:51and views into one room.
06:53From your grandparents to cousins you forgot you even had,
06:56there's bound to be some wounded pride and tension brewing.
07:00Let's dance! Come out!
07:02I'm gonna cut you!
07:03I'm not gonna cut you Capri!
07:05Let's fight!
07:05Stop it! Stop it!
07:07In Heartstopper's third season, Charlie Spring's mental illness
07:10begins to drastically affect his everyday life.
07:13His family eventually agrees to submit him to a mental retreat
07:16where he can heal.
07:17He comes out the other side having made significant progress,
07:20but he's still vulnerable to triggers and other thoughts
07:23that could send his mental health into another tailspin.
07:25You're still looking a bit skinny, aren't you?
07:28I thought you were getting all that mess sorted out.
07:32Oh no, Victoria, why do you cut all your hair off?
07:35On Christmas, his family members are constantly asking about it,
07:38joking about it, and are completely unaware of how their words affect him.
07:42We're just happy that Charlie's back to normal and back with us.
07:47I'm gonna get a drink.
07:50Well he seems great, as if nothing ever happened.
07:53This turns an already stressful day into a miserable one,
07:56leading to Charlie escaping the house entirely to instead spend the day
07:59with his boyfriend, Nick, and his family.
08:02Not everybody understands what you've been dealing with.
08:04So I just have to put up with ignorant comments to my own family?
08:06We just need to get through the day.
08:08National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is a perfect,
08:11if not a bit hyperbolic, example of holiday family chaos.
08:15Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
08:23Clark Griswold sets himself up for failure when he puts pressure on himself
08:27to have the most perfect family Christmas.
08:30Of course, one thing after another goes wrong.
08:32The parents and in-laws hardly ever get along.
08:34Cousin Eddie and his family make a surprise appearance,
08:37and they always stir up chaos wherever they go.
08:39Are you surprised?
08:41Surprised, Eddie?
08:43If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet,
08:45I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now.
08:47And Uncle Lewis and Aunt Bethany are quite the characters.
08:51Oh dear, did I break wind?
08:54Jesus, did the room clear out Bethany?
08:58But what really adds the final straw to the camel's back
09:00is when Clark receives his Christmas bonus.
09:03What is it?
09:06It's a one-year membership in the Jelly of the Month Club.
09:09He finally snaps and goes berserk,
09:11screaming about his boss in a long tirade with some very creative insults.
09:16Ironically, it's his snapping at the family that makes everyone want to go home,
09:19not the million other issues.
09:21Nobody's leaving.
09:23Nobody's walking out on this fun old-fashioned family Christmas.
09:25No, no, we're all in this together.
09:28In one Thanksgiving episode of Black-ish,
09:30Pop's older sister A.V. makes a surprise visit,
09:33and everyone is delighted, except for Ruby.
09:36Who, me? Now you just being ridiculous.
09:38Now let it go.
09:39I'll let it go.
09:41When I die.
09:42Ruby and A.V. have been feuding since Pops and Ruby first met,
09:45and a little holiday like Thanksgiving won't be getting in the way of that.
09:49On Brooklyn Nine-Nine, pretty much every Christmas,
09:52Thanksgiving, and Halloween are wild.
09:54That thing's a freaking dinosaur.
09:58The squad, who we consider a family, throws heists for fun on Halloween.
10:03Jack's daddy issues get in the way of him having a nice Thanksgiving.
10:06And on one Christmas, Jake, Boyle, and Gina spend the night
10:10in a department store that's being robbed, much to Jake's strange delight.
10:14Oh my god.
10:17It's real life, die hard.
10:20I mean, oh no, crime.
10:23Bringing the family together for the holidays can be chaotic, stressful, and even painful.
10:28So why do we love watching this trope play out on screen every year?
10:32They're often hilarious, for one thing.
10:33And they're also relatable.
10:42While movies and shows often take everything to the extreme for comedy or drama,
10:46the best ones still hit on something that feels true to our real-life experiences.
10:50When you're a kid, the last thing you want to deal with
10:52is entertaining family members you hardly ever see or know.
10:56Okay, wait, wait, I can't make dinner by myself. Who's gonna help me?
10:58You'd much rather they just leave you alone to enjoy your presents, right?
11:02As you grow older, you begin to realize just how different you are
11:05from some of your family members.
11:07Some of them can be a little too traditional or closed-minded.
11:11Oh, insensitive old white men, what would Christmas be without one?
11:15Perhaps not understanding mental health problems,
11:17or that, yes, it is possible that your personality may have changed
11:21in the year since you've last seen them.
11:24Aunt Clara had for years labored under the delusion that I was not only
11:28perpetually four years old, but also a girl.
11:31The adults expect you to get along perfectly with your cousins,
11:34even though you don't often see them and may not have anything in common
11:37except some DNA.
11:38And when you're an adult, you have to deal with coordinating
11:41all the family get-together, rambunctious children,
11:44pretentious teenagers, and making sure you're on good terms with Santa.
11:48So I'm just wondering if you could do us a favor and tell us what
11:51our nephew just asked for for Christmas.
11:53I know you.
11:54You're that lawyer.
11:55Oh no, this is never good.
11:56It's a stressful time for everyone, to say the least,
11:58and we appreciate our favorite movies and shows reminding us that we're not alone.
12:02But while holiday family movies show us how annoying,
12:05stressful, and chaotic it can be, they all usually end with an important,
12:09heartwarming, and hopeful message.
12:12The holidays bring us together and remind us of the best parts of family.
12:16So I'd just like to say I am happy to be here with my family.
12:21Real family, whether it's your blood relatives or your found family,
12:24is made up of the people who have seen you at your worst and love you anyway.
12:28They're the ones who will have your back no matter what happens
12:31and support you when no one else will.
12:33We have extra help.
12:34Yes, well, Serena's spending Thanksgiving with us this year.
12:37Ah, more the merrier.
12:38Happy to have you, my dear.
12:40Woo!
12:40The holiday season reminds us to put pettier disagreements aside,
12:44prioritize love, forgiveness, and joy, and eat some delicious food while we're at it.
12:50And hey, here's to a lousy Christmas.
12:52And a crappy new year.
