00:00Welcome to the latest on Jack Flaherty's major decision with the Tigers.
00:04Jack Flaherty has chosen to remain with the Tigers.
00:07The right-handed pitcher, who had an option for the 2026 season as part of the contract
00:11he signed last February, confirmed his decision to stay with the team, as announced by the
00:16organization on Tuesday.
00:18This choice provides the Tigers with some stability during an offseason that is expected
00:23to bring changes to their pitching rotation, following two consecutive playoff appearances.
00:28Flaherty's option was a significant aspect of the two-year agreement he made to return
00:32to the Tigers earlier this year, effectively making it a one-year contract with a player
00:36option for 2026.
00:38Initially, this option was valued at $10 million but it increased to $20 million after he met
00:45an escalator clause by making 15 starts this season.
00:48This escalator clause left Flaherty facing a decision at the conclusion of a challenging
00:52season, where he recorded an 8-to-15 win-loss record and a 4.64 earned run average, ERA.
01:01He experienced a decline in performance compared to his 2024 statistics in most key areas, although
01:07his 3.85 fielding independent pitching, FIP, indicated that he performed better than his
01:13basic statistics might imply.
01:15At his best, Flaherty showcased exceptional talent, including six scoreless innings in some
01:20of his outings.
01:21Flaherty had a notable performance on July 27, where he pitched against the American
01:25League champion Blue Jays, completing six innings and achieving seven strikeouts.
01:30He followed this with another impressive outing on August 18 against the Astros, where he delivered
01:35seven scoreless innings and recorded nine strikeouts.
01:39However, he also experienced two challenging games, where he allowed eight runs, including
01:45a loss to the Royals on August 24.
01:47On September 10, Flaherty led the Tigers to a significant victory at Yankee Stadium, pitching
01:52five scoreless innings and striking out seven batters.
01:55His subsequent three games were against the Cleveland team, where he faced back-to-back losses
02:00that concluded the regular season.
02:02In the AL wildcard series, he pitched four 2-3 innings, allowing just one run in game three.
02:08He suffered a loss in game three of the AL division series against the Mariners, but returned
02:13to the mound on just two days' rest, to deliver two scoreless innings in relief during game
02:18five.
02:19If Flaherty had chosen to opt out of his contract, the Tigers could have attempted to retain him
02:24by offering a qualifying offer of $22,025,000, which would have been an increase from his
02:30existing contract option.
02:32He would have had until November 16 to decide whether to accept or decline this offer.
02:37The Tigers would have been granted a compensation pick in the upcoming MLB draft if Flaherty had
02:42chosen to decline their offer and sign with another team.
02:45However, Flaherty and the Tigers managed to come to an agreement, which allowed Detroit
02:49to avoid a significant gap in their pitching rotation.
02:52With Reese Olsen recovering from a season-ending shoulder injury, and Jackson Jobe likely to
02:57miss a substantial portion, if not all, of the next season due to Tommy John surgery, the
03:02Tigers now have Flaherty, Tarek Skubal, Casey Mize and Troy Melton as their primary returning
03:08starting pitchers for the upcoming year, they might consider moving Keiter Montero back
03:12into the starting rotation after his successful performance in the bullpen, or they could opt
03:17to activate their option on Jose Urquidi.
03:20Additionally, the team may look to acquire a veteran starter to strengthen their pitching
03:24staff for the next season, especially in anticipation of potential departures of Skubal and Mize
03:29as free agents next winter.
03:32What do you think this means for the Tigers' pitching strategy next season?
