00:00Welcome to our channel, where we dive deep into the stories behind the game.
00:05The Tigers brought in Jose Urquidy during spring training and acquired Paul Seuald in July,
00:10aiming to strengthen their pitching lineup for a playoff run in 2025.
00:14However, both players are now likely to leave the team for the 2026 season,
00:18as the Tigers have opted not to exercise their contract options for the upcoming year.
00:23The decision regarding Seuald was anticipated, following his trade from Cleveland at the trade
00:27deadline. When the Tigers secured the 35-year-old reliever, who was recovering from a right
00:33shoulder injury, they also took on the contract he had signed with the Guardians earlier in the year.
00:39This contract included a mutual option for 2026 worth $10 million, or a $1 million buyout.
00:46Even if Seuald had managed to regain his performance level towards the end of the season,
00:50and during the playoffs, it was unlikely that the Tigers would have chosen to activate that option.
00:55The team has not committed to paying a full-time reliever and eight-figure salary.
01:00Since Joe Nathan's unsuccessful signing as a closer a decade ago, Seuald appeared in only four
01:06games for the Tigers, with three of those being low-pressure situations. In a recent game,
01:13a pitcher allowed two runs on four hits over the course of 4-1-3 innings, during which he also issued
01:19two walks and recorded two strikeouts. Seuald, a reliever for the Tigers, did not see any action
01:25during the wildcard series against Cleveland, and was subsequently excluded from the roster
01:30for the division series against Seattle. The situation with Urquidy, a 30-year-old player,
01:35was more complex. The Tigers had signed him to a back-loaded contract last spring, while he was
01:41in the midst of recovering from Tommy John surgery, fully aware that he would likely perform better in
01:46the following year, than he would upon his return during the summer. Although the veteran pitcher managed
01:51to return in time for the crucial September games, he only made two appearances in relief.
01:56He successfully held the opposition for four outs in a 2-0 victory against Miami on September 14,
02:03but then allowed two runs on two hits, along with two walks, and a strikeout in a game against Cleveland
02:09three days later. His fastball velocity had returned to level seen before his surgery, and he managed to
02:15limit hard contact during this limited playing time. Ultimately, the Tigers decided to exclude Urquidy
02:21from their postseason roster. Although he was included on the roster for both series, he remained
02:27prepared to step in. If an injury occurred, Urquidy is set to earn a base salary of $4 million for the
02:34upcoming season, along with additional incentives tied to the number of games he starts. The Tigers were
02:40not required to pay a buyout, when they opted to decline the option, a minor waiver claim.
02:47On Thursday, the Tigers made a move that reflects President of Baseball Operations.
02:52Scott Harris's strategy of acquiring minor waiver claims during the offseason as they claimed right-handed
02:58pitcher Jack Little off waivers from the Pirates, standing at 6'4", Little was selected in the fifth
03:04round of the 2019 draft by the Dodgers. He made his Major League debut last summer, appearing in two games
03:10out of the Dodgers' bullpen. In his first outing on June 19, he gave up two runs on four hits over two
03:16innings, but he bounced back with a flawless inning on July 5. In August, the Pirates claimed little off
03:22waivers, and assigned him to AAA Indianapolis, where he excelled with a 2.79 ERA across 14 relief
03:29appearances, striking out 14 batters in 19 and one-third innings. He still has two minor league
03:35options available. In a recent procedural action, the Tigers have reinstated pitchers,
03:39Bo Breeski, Jason Foley, Sean Gwenther, Jackson Jobe, Ty Madden, and Reese Olsen from the 60-day
03:46injured list. With these transactions, the Tigers' 40-man roster is currently at its full capacity of
03:5140 players. Additional roster changes are anticipated later this month, as eligible prospects will need to
03:57be included on the roster. To safeguard them from the upcoming Rule 5 draft next month, what move should
04:02your team make to build a championship roster?
