00:00So last night was super lame, uh, in the end, frustrating. I don't care if you have an NBA
00:07contract. I don't care if it's two way, three way, four way, five way. I don't care. You all
00:13be able to hold an eight point lead with 90 seconds to go. Okay. Or like you, your professional
00:20basketball team, but outside of that, like there's the small subject and then the big subject,
00:28the small subject is Draymond and Al Horford committing bad fouls on a night when you've
00:33got a lead going down the stretch and you lost back to back nights to really bad teams. That's
00:38frustrating. And I'm with you. I was yelling at my TV from the couch, the same way all you warrior
00:43fans
00:44do. But the larger issue to me comes down to these two words. When I hear a lot of the
00:50frustration,
00:51frustration, it is pointed at roster construction. This is where I feel like a lot of warrior fans
00:59are spending time or frustration, roster construction. And I get it. I get it because
01:06it's clearly not a very deep roster. You could look at Boston and go, well, they've had all these
01:12injuries and defections and they're still a good basketball team. Why aren't you?
01:17To me, if you are mad at the Warriors roster construction, then what you're actually mad at
01:26is Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler. And you're not mad at them as individuals, but you're mad that the
01:34Warriors basically are so top heavy that they've got $117 million right now watching basketball.
01:43And for in Jimmy's case, he will do it for a while. And in Steph's case, dot, dot, dot, we
01:49really don't
01:50know. He's been doing it for a little while. We'll continue to do it. Update not too long ago, at
01:55least
01:5510 more days on the shelf, at least five more games for Steph Curry. That is the Warriors roster
02:03construction. And when those two players are out that top heavy, that much money, you are not going to
02:10be a good basketball team. But I keep hearing people, whether it's Twitter, whether it's calling
02:16our station, talking about how the Warriors have so poorly constructed this roster because they don't
02:23have either athleticism or they don't have bigs or they don't have this. You're right. You're right.
02:28They have Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler. Now, if you want to argue with that construction,
02:34cool. There's a discussion there, but that's what they did. And, and I don't know how you do that
02:41and have a bunch of other good players waiting to go be consistent and win NBA basketball games when
02:48those two guys aren't available. Well, you don't trade Jonathan Kaminga would be the number one
02:52response from fans. And I hate that all roads lead there, but everything you're laying out there is
02:56factual. And I'm kind of with you as far as when you trade for Jimmy Butler, you basically say,
03:02we're going all in on two guys who are making North of 54 million this year and next year.
03:08So you can't roster construct around them unless you get miracles and guys play for minimums who
03:14are worth 35 million. That just doesn't happen in the association. So you had to kind of piecemeal
03:19it and you thought Al Horford stretch five that could work for 50 or 55 games to Anthony Melton.
03:25We loved him when he was here. That could work. And it has. And then beyond that, well, I mean,
03:30we have dream on, so cross your fingers, Moses Moody's been a good, reliable,
03:34worth the money player pods, whatever you think they think he's better last night. He was not great.
03:40And then you go all the way down and GP two. Yeah. You'll play 50 games and Spencer and Guy
03:45and
03:45Quentin and will, and basically your roster with two guys making mega money. You're not going to be able
03:51to construct it in a way where you are Boston. But the frustration is Kaminga because if you had him
03:58and I know he's been hurt and he's been in and out, he's been in and out, same number of
04:03games as JK,
04:04that would be the one where people criticize the roster construction. And look, that story has been
04:11so well told that we know exactly what happened. But that I think is where the frustration lies
04:15for a lot of fans. And that's fine. But that, that seed was planted quite frankly, either before
04:20the current GM was the GM, um, and by other people who are not the ones that are getting
04:27pointed out. Do you know what I mean? A lot of people today calling our station, being like
04:32Steve Kerr and the roster. We can argue about Steve Kerr. He doesn't make the roster.
04:38Do you know that while we're sitting here yelling for weeks on end about Jonathan Kaminga versus
04:43Kristaps Porzingis, if Steve Kerr had his way, that person's name would be Franz Wagner.
04:49That person would not be Jonathan Kaminga or Kristaps Porzingis. His name would be Franz
04:54Wagner, but that he not, he doesn't make the roster. Sure. He's got input. So do a bunch
05:00of people. And Mike Dunleavy, uh, for everybody that does the, well, you know, why are you keeping
05:07your picks? The Warriors suck at making picks. Mike Dunleavy has not, my opinion, has not even
05:13had a chance to really get a reputation about whether or not he's good at the draft. He's never
05:19had a lottery pick in his life. And if we do look at the players he's picked based on where
05:25he picked
05:26them, I would argue there's more successes than failures. Wouldn't you? We did the pods thing last
05:32week. He would be drafted earlier than he was if we redrafted. Well, Richard is an interesting
05:37player out of the second round. Yep. Quentin Post the same. I mean, these are second round rounders.
05:42TJD was a second rounder and you got a second rounder back. So that became a net neutral, but
05:47they haven't really had that big first swing with Mike Dunleavy. And I think he, he deserves to have
05:53that shot, but it goes beyond just the draft picks. And you mentioned Boston and they've been able to
05:59kind of piecemeal it with undrafted guys who've come in and contributed. And, you know, you went
06:03out and got Peyton Pritchard in the draft and great job and he's been fantastic. And then you went out
06:08and get Nikola Vucevic this year at the deadline. And so even though you haven't had Tatum until
06:13recently, they've done a better job of backfilling their roster around it. I didn't think that Boston
06:18would be this good this year, but it's because of those others as guru calls them that they've been
06:24able to hang. Yeah, no, no. They've done a great job. And Jalen Brown's been healthy and he's been amazing.
06:28Yeah. Like I'm, I'm, I'm not here to say, uh, that, that, you know, all the decisions by the
06:34Warriors and all the picks and all the signings and everything have been perfect. I just, what I'm
06:41here to say is the Warriors strategy is very clear and it blew up in their face. So if you
06:50would like
06:51to reel back, I would say, and argue that that shouldn't have been their strategy. I can hear
06:58that. I think we can, we can talk about that. That's okay. I'm not like, I don't, I'm not going
07:05to sit here and be like, that's wrong. But to me, that's what you're saying. If you're in some way
07:10looking at warrior games right now, doing the shoulda, coulda, woulda thing and being mad that
07:16they're not better because of roster construction, they are top heavy veteran laden and their dudes
07:24are out. It no different than what the Rams would look like. If Stafford and Devante Adams
07:30were out, they would suck. Yeah. And you can even look at like, like the Lakers, if they
07:35didn't have Luca and LeBron, even though they have other better players than the Warriors
07:39do. And that's just the way this roster was always going to be constructed. And when you
07:43decided to go for Jimmy Butler and you traded wigs and all those other pieces to get a guy
07:49who was really good in a short spell, but he's also kind of old, like the rest of your team,
07:54you went all in on old. And so you brought in Al Horford, who was old and Chris Stapps is
07:59not
07:59young, but he's been through the ringer and all the rest of it. So you are totally pot committed.
08:03And if you want to construct the roster, et cetera, you're only going to be able to do it in
08:09a certain
08:09way. And that's where you wind up with, you know, Cryer and Williams and Leon's and just a real
08:14quick moment about LJ Cryer. Great game. Heartbreaking to watch that, uh, at the foul
08:19line, but he looked terrified. No, he made all the others. The one he missed, he gets to the foul
08:27line in a spot where you hit them both and you're up three and you're probably going to win the
08:30game.
08:31He looked a little bit scared. Well, and okay, this is my opinion. And that's fine. I've been
08:36watching too much college of late. You see that now in these tournaments. He didn't do a
08:40room meal Robinson. No, just sit up there and make those free throws. Exactly. No, but this
08:44is, that's, is a great, I'm so glad you pointed that out. This is a great example of what I'm
08:49talking about. So everybody goes to bed mad and the Warriors roster and this, that, and
08:53the other. And then we're going to come in here the next day and be like, I can't believe
08:59LJ Cryer missed a free throw. Like, of course, LJ Cryer missed a free throw. How many games
09:08has LJ Cryer played in his career? How many big free throws? What would Scott Hanson say?
09:13He would say seven games. That's right. And how many big free throws has he shot in his
09:18NBA career? Oh, right. Those were the first. Those were the first. How many free throws
09:23did he attempt last night? Ask Scott Hanson. Was it seven? Seven throws. Yeah, but four down
09:30the stretch. And I think he made three of them, right? He was six for seven on the game. Like,
09:33that's good. Six for seven. That's good. That's a good for, I'm not doing it. That's
09:38a good, that's a good free throw percentage. So like, is that where we are? We're mad
09:45because Pat Spencer and LJ Cryer let you down? Like, I don't know, man. I think we're
09:53mad because Kaminga got sent off for a song. Oh, Draymond's still here. And Jimmy's making
09:5950 whatever. And there's a lot of other reasons, but I think the rational way to
10:04look at it is this is what they've decided to do. And there's no other way to
10:09go about it now, unless you get in the off season and somebody wants to take on
10:12Jimmy's expiring and you get, which that would be probably a boatload of picks
10:17going with him. You're going to send an injured Jimmy and 53 million. I'm not
10:21sending out any picks anymore. Right. That's what I'm saying. If you really want
10:26different roster construction, there would have to be drastic, dramatic moves
10:30that happen in the off season. Right. And I would argue that they, for this to not
10:33look like this right now, you would have needed to do some of those drastic
10:36things like last year or the year before. I mean, you, to me, if we're attacking
10:42roster construction, you actually are bringing to the table the number one take
10:49that you and I have damn near disallowed on this radio show for the last
10:54three years. What's the number one tune out? Somebody will call and let's go
10:59out to Billy in Danville. Hey, Billy, what do you think? And what does he say?
11:04I'll tell you what they need to do guys. They need to trade Steph Curry right now
11:07before the value goes down anymore. And you know, get some players back, get some
11:12younger athletic wings and maybe a couple of picks as well, because every time he
11:16comes out there, he might get hurt. And yeah. Thanks, Billy. Thanks. Sorry. My mom's
11:23calling. You know what? Maybe they were right. Maybe they were right. But that's
11:29what you would have needed to do for this to not look like it looks. So like, yeah,
11:36they're totally, totally like their, their pants are around their ankles in these
11:42games. So that does not mean that they shouldn't be able to hold an eight point
11:47lead with 90 seconds to go. Or you should be able to go to Utah. It doesn't mean
11:50those things, but it's like, I don't know. Why are you expecting them to be all, you
11:55know, good? Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler are hurt. I'm not expecting them to be
12:00good. I'm just expecting them to be better than Horatius, which is what they've been
12:05the last couple of days.
