00:00All right, welcome back in here to Newswire on this Thursday in the Sports Grid Network.
00:05Joe Ranieri in for Craig Mish as we turn our attention to college football week number 11.
00:12We just had that really fun committee ranking show, whatever that thing is there,
00:18because none of it's going to matter by the time we get to the end of this month.
00:22And nobody knows that better than our good friend Paul Stone.
00:25And Paul, you got to love it, right?
00:27The rankings, this is great.
00:29But over the next couple of weeks, none of what we just saw this week is going to hold true.
00:34There's going to be a lot of jockeying for position, I think, over the next couple of weeks
00:38with some of the games that we have coming up.
00:42Absolutely, Joe.
00:43I mean, there's a lot of talk about it, you know, and it gives college football fans and media types,
00:47you know, something to talk about and argue about and take exception with.
00:52But as you indicated, there's a lot of football to still be played,
00:55a lot of big time games and many of them this weekend.
00:59And so, yeah, it's not going to matter when we get to early December.
01:03The last one's the only one that really counts.
01:06Take a picture, guys.
01:07It lasts longer there if you're in the top five.
01:10Let's talk about the Big 12 here, Paul, because it's, I don't want to say elimination,
01:15but BYU, Texas Tech, they're probably on track to play each other in the Big 12 championship anyway.
01:22But what gives, what a double-digit favorite for Texas Tech this week?
01:28Yeah, I tell you, you know, this is a big game in Lubbock this weekend.
01:32Obviously, ESPN game day there for the first time since 2008.
01:36I love both these teams, and I certainly respect what BYU's done with their true freshman quarterback,
01:41Bear Bachmeier.
01:42Bear, just a breath of fresh air in the college game.
01:46He doesn't slide.
01:47He likes to not only take contact, he likes to initiate it.
01:51Where's number 47?
01:53Just done a great job since their expected starter, Jake Retzloff, withdrew from school in the summer
02:00rather than face a suspension over supposed violations of the school's honor code.
02:05So, man, Bachmeier's been one of the stories of college football.
02:07And I love Bachmeier, I love BYU, but I like Texas Tech even more, Joe.
02:13This is a team that if they bring their A game, I think their A game is better than BYU's,
02:19and they're getting healthy.
02:20Bayron Morton, their starting quarterback who's had injury issues throughout his career,
02:24he returned last week, took Texas Tech into Manhattan, Kansas.
02:28They handled Kansas State relative ease, 43-20.
02:32And not only did Morton return, this didn't get as much notoriety or coverage,
02:37but their tight end, Terrence Carter Jr., 6'2", 248.
02:42This is a guy they list as tight end, but he can go out wide, kind of a hybrid type,
02:48causes matchup problems.
02:49He's just a big part of their offense.
02:51We saw Texas Tech's A game back in September in Salt Lake City
02:55when they dismantled the Utes, 34-10.
02:58I think Tech's bringing the kitchen sink again on Saturday.
03:01I like Tech by about two touchdowns over undefeated BYU.
03:06Two very, I don't want to say, but two underrated defenses too as well, Paul.
03:11I like both of these defenses.
03:13This number feels a little much, doesn't it?
03:16You know, a lot of people have said that, you know, and I understand that it seems high,
03:21but BYU from a pirating standpoint, even though they are undefeated,
03:25I mean, they've had some, you know, they've had some narrow escapes
03:28and they just don't resonate as much with the numerical component of it.
03:35They are undefeated, though, and they play great defense.
03:37And, you know, they're going to be able to state their case on Saturday in Lubbock.
03:44I really think, though, this Texas Tech team, if they get healthy,
03:47which they're pretty healthy right now, they've got one defensive tackle still out,
03:50I think they can challenge.
03:51I think they can make some noise in the playoffs if they do indeed make the 12-team playoff.
03:56One of the teams that are interesting to follow here is because they could end a lot of teams'
04:02seasons here that have hopes of a college football playoff, and that is Oregon.
04:06And it's going to start there in Iowa this weekend here because then they got to go and take on U.S.
04:12They got a whole bunch of teams that are still vying to be top 25,
04:16and they could put in and throw a wrench in all of it.
04:18What do we like about them against Iowa this week, or don't we like them?
04:23I'll tell you, you look at this Oregon team, Joe, and you kind of asked that question.
04:27There was a Wendy's commercial.
04:29I'll date myself a long time ago.
04:30Where's the beef?
04:32You know, in Oregon, they had an opportunity a couple of weeks ago against Indiana,
04:37got them in Austin Stadium there at home, and the Hoosiers are very good.
04:41But, I mean, Indiana was the better team clearly that day on Oregon's home field.
04:46A couple of weeks prior before that, we'll remember that Indiana traveled across the country
04:50to Penn State, defeated the Nittany Lions in double overtime, really looked like a good
04:55data point at the time.
04:57But now Penn State's on a five-game losing streak, so maybe not so much at the present.
05:02Oregon came in in the playoff rankings, the first debut poll on this past Tuesday at number
05:08nine, which is about where I think they should be.
05:11This Iowa team, though, is tricky.
05:14They don't have a whole lot of flash and dash.
05:17They're not going to wow you.
05:19Their trademark style is run the football, play sound defense, great technique.
05:25They're going to win the special teams battle.
05:27They're going to win the turnover battle more often than not.
05:30And they are tough at Kinnick Stadium.
05:32That's been Indiana's toughest game to date by far.
05:36Iowa actually led Indiana 13-10 early in the fourth quarter the last Saturday in September.
05:44Indiana, of course, rallied to win that game 20-15.
05:47But the Hoosier offense, only 337 total yards against this Iowa defense.
05:52I think Iowa's going to make this a four-quarter game.
05:55I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Hawkeyes didn't defeat the Ducks on Saturday at Kinnick
06:00Stadium.
06:01In any case, give me Iowa plus six and a half over Oregon.
06:04Shocker, Iowa playing quality defense there with Kurt Ferencz.
06:10Paul, how about Kansas and Arizona here?
06:13Because this total doesn't feel high enough to be.
06:16This could be a wild one here, taking on Arizona.
06:20I mean, I thought Kansas might lose that Kansas State game twice when they just laid an egg
06:26in the first half against Oklahoma State.
06:28But they righted the ship in the second half.
06:30What do you have going on in this one?
06:32Yeah, this should be a high-scoring game.
06:35You've got two veteran quarterbacks, Arizona, of course, Noah Fafita.
06:39And then there at Kansas, Jalen Daniels, who's playing well again this season.
06:44You know, I look at this game, and it just comes down to the basic eye test.
06:49Arizona, they have played really well at home.
06:52They're 4-1 on the season.
06:53We talked about BYU a little bit earlier.
06:56They actually led seventh-ranked BYU by 10 points early in the fourth quarter.
07:02BYU rallied, won that game 33-27 in double overtime.
07:07So Arizona's just one game away from being undefeated at home.
07:10And while Arizona's played at a high level on their home field, Kansas really has been
07:15something less than stellar on the road so far this season.
07:19They lost to Missouri and Texas Tech, two good football teams, but lost to those two by a total
07:25of 36 points.
07:27Had to come from behind and rally to defeat Central Florida for their only road victory
07:32of the year, 27-20.
07:35You look at Fafita that we talked about.
07:37He threw 12 interceptions last year.
07:39Really was coming off a subpar showing.
07:41But this season, he's been on his game.
07:43He's thrown for 2,042 yards through the season's first eight games, completed 65% of his throws,
07:50eight yards in attempt, and 21 touchdowns against just four interceptions.
07:55So a real good TD interception ratio.
07:58Kansas, in their last 25 games, is an away underdog, only 9-16 against the spread.
08:04I think Arizona's going to win this game, defeat Kansas by more than a touchdown there
08:08in Tucson on Saturday.
08:11Going to be a fun one here.
08:12There's going to be some high scoring, that is for sure.
08:15Let me ask you a question.
08:17How confident are you, Big Ten, Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon?
08:22How many teams are we talking about, do you think, in the postseason here?
08:27I think Big Ten's going to be a three-bid conference.
08:30It's going to be, I think it's going to get three bids.
08:33And I think the SEC's going to get five.
08:35That's going to be a controversial point.
08:37But I think, obviously, the depth of competition in that league and the fact that you just don't
08:43have, I mean, obviously, Indiana and Ohio State, I don't think anybody can really question at
08:48this point, based on all the bodies of work, that they are one and two in some order, one
08:54or the other.
08:54But after that, you know, there's a little bit of a drop-off.
08:58So I think we're going to see five from the SEC and three from the Big Ten.
09:01And that will be my bold prediction.
09:04There is somewhere written that you have to take an ACC team.
09:07I'm just asking.
09:08I don't know.
09:09I'm just saying.
09:10I guess they have to, Paul, at some particular point here.
09:14But that should be a lot of fun to watch unfold as well.
09:17Paul Stone, always a pleasure, my man.
09:20Enjoy the games.
09:20We appreciate the time, as always.
