00:00In the Brazilian city of Belém do Pará, preparations are underway for the 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, the COP30, organized by the United Nations.
00:22In the United States, people demonstrate against President Donald Trump's policies in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday in the one-year anniversary of his presidency re-election.
00:39And in Palestine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees, the UMRA, reports the worst crisis of forced displacement since 1967 in the West Bank.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belém de los Santos. I'm from Benzerazú Studios in Havana, Cuba. We'll begin with the news.
01:02And in Brazil, preparations are underway for the 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, that is the COP30, organized by the United Nations.
01:24Brazilian President Luís Ignacio Lula da Silva authorized the participation of the armed forces in guaranteeing public control for the meeting and summit of leaders, following the decision to hold the summit in Belém, the capital of the Amazonian state of Pará,
01:40which responds to the government's intention to highlight the crucial role of the Amazon as the lungs of the planet in the global climate agenda.
01:50For this event, which will take place on November 10th, the city expects to welcome more than 170 delegations and at least 57 heads of state, highlighting the strategic importance of this event.
02:04Precisely in this context, the head of state and international leaders have already begun to arrive at Belém International Airport to participate in the leaders' summit that will take place within the framework of COP30.
02:21Among the first to arrive were the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, the former president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, the president of Ethiopia, Tay Atke Selassie, and a high-level delegation from Nigeria as well, underscoring the broad geopolitical representation of this event.
02:40The leaders' summit officially opens on November 6th and 7th at the Hangar Exhibition and Convention Center in Amazon City.
02:49COP30 is being held amid growing international calls for bolder, more urgent actions to address the global warming crisis.
02:59And precisely speaking of the climate crisis in Vietnam, authorities reported at least 40 deaths after a week of record flooding and rainfall due to the advance of Typhoon Kalmagi.
03:16The central region of Vietnam was hit by torrential rains that caused rivers to overflow and flooded several historic sites, and even a national rainfall record was set with 1.7 meters of rain falling in just 24 hours.
03:32In this regard, mass evacuations of coastal areas initiated and in the city of Cung Nhu, officials went door-to-door to warn residents to evacuate immediately.
03:43Kalmagi will be the 13th storm to hit Vietnam in 2025, and experts fear that the typhoon could exacerbate the flooding that hit the island last week and caused the death of 47 people.
04:03Meanwhile, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcus Jr. declared a state of emergency on Thursday after Typhoon Kalmagi left at least 114 acres.
04:13Most of the victims died from drowning in flash floods, many of them in the central province of Cebu, which was heavily affected before the tropical cyclone left the archipelago on Wednesday towards the South China Sea.
04:32Typhoon affected almost 2 million people, including about 430,000 villagers who were evacuated to emergency shelters.
04:41The area around the city of Cebu received 183 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours prior to Kalmagi's impact, well above its monthly average of 131 millimeters.
04:57In Venezuela and China are negotiating a trade agreement that includes tariff exemptions for 400 products.
05:09In an interview on the Venezuelan television channel from Expo Shanghai 2025, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Coromoto Godoy, explained that the measure seeks to strengthen trade ties between Venezuela and China.
05:23They presented a very important proposed agreement that covers around 400 tariff codes that would enjoy zero tariffs, and China would request in return another number of similar exempted tariffs.
05:37Godoy explained that negotiations began in March after the visit of the Venezuelan vice president, Denzi Rodriguez, to Beijing.
05:43At the same time, she noted that they hope to implement this agreement by the first quarter of 2026.
05:53Now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok, at TellUs for English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
06:04We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:05Welcome back to From the South.
06:25We continue with more information in the United States, Washington, D.C. was the scene of a demonstration Wednesday marking one year since U.S. President Donald Trump's election to a second term in office in celebrating the defeat of Republicans in several local elections in the past days.
06:41From the U.S. Capitol, hundreds of people gathered by the Refuse Fascism platform, demanding an end to what they described as the president's fascist regime, chanting slogans such as Trump must go.
06:55The day also coincided with the anniversary of Trump's victory on November 5th, 2024, the presidential election, a day that, according to those in attendance, was the result of all his lies.
07:09At the protest, criticism of anti-migrant policies was the focus, emphasizing the harassment by the Trump administration and the raids carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office.
07:21Meanwhile, also in the United States, the death toll rises to 12 after the UPS, the United Parallel Service cargo plane crashed near Louisville Airport in the state of Kentucky on Tuesday.
07:40The mayor of Louisville, Craig Greenberg, announced on social media that the death toll had risen to 12.
07:46For his part, the governor, Andy Bisher, predicted that the death toll would rise, saying authorities were looking for a handful of other people but do not expect to find anyone else alive.
07:59Meanwhile, the chief of Ocolona Fire District in Louisville said that it will take quite some time to remove and search under the rubble.
08:08He also said that rescue efforts are continuing and the causes of the accident are currently being investigated.
08:16We're planning to be there for at least a week or longer.
08:24We'll be out there as long as the NTSB needs us to be there.
08:28We are prepared for this.
08:31So I don't know how many victims we're actually looking for.
08:36That's one of the issues.
08:37And the debris zone is so large.
08:39So trying to get people back there.
08:43And with the debris zone, some of that debris is going to have to be moved and searched underneath.
08:49So it will take us.
08:51And we go now to Mexico.
08:53As President Claudia Shanbone filed a complaint against the man who harassed her this Tuesday outside the National Palace.
09:01The Mexican president reported that legal action was filed in Mexico City while lamenting and detailing the accident.
09:08After the harassment, the Mexican leader realized that she was not the only victim, of course,
09:14and that the accused had repeated this action against other women on the same street.
09:21He was arrested and is currently in protective custody.
09:23Shamebound emphasized that this incident is not solely related to her as the highest authority in the country,
09:30but to all Mexican women to guarantee respect for women in every sense.
09:43And we go now to Argentina.
09:45There's another news following the scandal over a documentary by Judge Julieta McIntosh
09:49that forced the previous trial to be declared null and void.
09:53The court ruled on Wednesday that the new trial for the death of Diego Armando Maradona
09:58will begin on March 17th of next year.
10:01The magistrates alleged collaboration in the filming of an unauthorized documentary
10:06provisionally titled Divine Justice, which was being made in parallel and secretly.
10:12The three judges were removed and the trial was declared null and void.
10:17That trial, in which a testimony of almost 100 witnesses were recorded,
10:22was judging the health professionals charged with the death of the football player.
10:28McIntosh had his license as a lawyer revoked and is now facing trial for unethical conduct.
10:36Also in Argentina news, one of the leading electronic manufacturers in Tierra del Fuego laid off 150 workers
10:51this Wednesday in its plant in Ushuaia, which had been visited in September by the far-right president, Javier Milay.
10:58The workers were laid off without prior notice, while some local media outlets alerted the measure
11:04is part of a context of opening up imports, removing tax benefits from the industrial promotion regime
11:11that benefited the province and cutting national funds as well.
11:16In the recent election campaign, President Milay appeared alongside dozens of the company's workers
11:22and spoke of supporting the productive sector.
11:24However, the company violated the labor stability agreement that governed the province and fired the workers.
11:36In Venezuela, the 20th anniversary of the No to the FTAA movement
11:42and the struggle of the peoples to confront the threat of neoliberalism in the continent is commemorated.
11:48From the Romulo Gallego Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies in Caracas,
11:53the documentary Fight Against the FTAA, The Challenges of the Peoples Who Screened,
11:59Venezuela remembers that thanks to the efforts of Commander Hugo Chavez,
12:03the initiative to free itself from imperial hegemony
12:07and the neoliberal measures of the free trade area of the Americas was born.
12:12The documentary shows how Chavez's strategy and his union with social movements,
12:18leaders and activists in America helped bury the FTAA with the emergence of the ALBA
12:25and maintained the resistance of the people.
12:28We are gathered here today to commemorate a tremendous victory that our people achieved 20 years ago
12:43in this moment of our nation's history.
12:46Gathering together is extremely important as it brings the victories of that event to light,
13:07providing guidance and understanding that it was not just something that happened,
13:12but that it continues and is an ongoing process.
13:15It's not something that happened, but that it continues and the struggle continues.
13:19It's a process in full development.

13:37Final short break, don't go away.
13:45Welcome back to From the South.
13:58We continue with more information.
14:00In France, the authorities carried out a new eviction operation on around 300 migrants
14:06from the camps that have been set up in Gars-Talingrad and Bab-Chapelle in central Paris.
14:12The operation, carried out by police officers, used three buses to transfer the refugees to improvised shelters located in distant cities such as Bourg, Bessesson and Toulouse.
14:23It was also learned that sub-residents left the camps before the evacuation to avoid being transferred out of Paris,
14:30while others arrived in the area hoping to find a new shelter.
14:35It is estimated that about 150 people are still without shelter due to the strict admission criteria for shelters,
14:42which leads to displacement to unknown areas.
14:45And in Palestine, the occupied West Bank is experiencing the worst crisis of forced displacement since 1967,
15:13this linked to Israel's military rights and sinus settler violence.
15:18According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, the UNRWA,
15:24more than 42,000 Palestinians had been forced to leave their homes since October of 2023.
15:31Furthermore, the UNRWA denounced the alarming increase in attacks by Israeli settlers
15:35against Palestinian olive farmers in the West Bank,
15:39which according to the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission of the Palestinian Authority,
15:462,350 attacks were recorded in October of 2025 alone,
15:52describing it as a continuous cycle of terror.
15:55Israeli military forces carried out 1,584 attacks,
16:00including physical assaults, demolitions and the uprooting of olive trees,
16:05while Cyanese settlers perpetrated at least 766 attacks.
16:17And the Palestinian Ministry of Education reopened the historic Al-Kalmeya school,
16:23located east of Gaza City.
16:25Authorities reported that the former educational center opened its doors
16:30to welcome more than 300 Gasson students in a two-shift system morning and afternoon.
16:36The initiative aims to meet the needs of dozens of children eager to discover their lives in the coastal enclave
16:42after years of continuous siege by Israel.
16:46On the other hand, parents demanded more places to enroll their children
16:50so that they could revive social and cultural development
16:54despite the destruction caused by the Israeli siege.
17:00Before the war, my children attended a private school.
17:08Now, due to the circumstances, the poor conditions of the roads,
17:12the lack of transportation and the need to repair and renovate the schools,
17:16we have been forced to enroll them in educational initiatives in the area,
17:20where we flew after the destruction of our homes.
17:23These initiatives have limited places.
17:25Today, I came to enroll them, but I couldn't because they were full
17:30and the space was too small to accommodate more students.
17:33For three years, we have suffered because our children have been deprived of education,
17:38but we are trying to compensate them for what they have lost.
17:41Most schools in the Gaza Strip were destroyed during the occupation.
17:49This particular school is located in eastern Gaza.
17:53Neighbors in the area suggested we use it,
17:55so we began preparing the space with the local community,
17:58who cleaned and equipped the school to start classes.
18:01There are 300 students in this school.
18:03We are working with the resources available
18:05and hope to be able to accommodate more students.
18:08Parents warned their children to return to school
18:11after an interruption of over two years due to the war.
18:15As you know, the Palestinian people have one of the highest literacy rates in the world.
18:23I couldn't return to my old school, so I came here.
18:26All our schools were destroyed.
18:28Before the war, we used to go to school, learn, play and have fun.
18:32I want to continue my studies until the end.
18:36Now, in other news, on Wednesday,
18:38the Turkish government rejected the claims made in the Tokyo 2015 report
18:43published by the European Commission,
18:45particularly those referring to the judiciary fundamental rights
18:49and the country's internal political situation.
18:52In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ankara stressed
18:56that the report's assessment are incompatible with the efforts
19:00to establish a positive agenda between Tokyo and the European Union
19:04and that they are written in contradiction
19:07to the long-term interest of both parties.
19:10In this context, the ministry urged the European Union
19:13to activate existing cooperation mechanisms
19:16and include Tokyo in the bloc's defense and security programs
19:20as part of a more equitable and pragmatic relationship.
19:30Russia's permanent first deputy representative to the United Nations,
19:35Dmitry Polyansky, also expressed his concern
19:39about the violent escalation by the United States
19:41against Caribbean countries.
19:43Let's take a closer look at this.
19:45Through his profile on the social media acts,
19:48Polyansky stated that they were deeply concerned
19:52about the dangerous escalation in the Caribbean.
19:55The United States continues its military deployment
19:58along the coast of Venezuela and its illegal attacks
20:02against alleged drug trafficking vessels.
20:05He continued by saying, in an attempt to reduce tensions,
20:08Russia, during its presidency of the UN Security Council in October,
20:13proposed a draft presidential statement
20:15to address this concerning situation.
20:18The moderation and dialogue to resolve disagreements
20:23and a reaffirmation of the zone of peace in Latin America
20:26and an emphasis on cooperation to jointly combat drug trafficking
20:30and transnational organized crime.
20:33He also stated that unfortunately only one member of the council
20:37rejected this initiative, showing no intentions
20:40of de-escalating the situation or seeking diplomatic solutions.
20:44He concluded by pointing out that Russia rejects belligerence
20:48and military threats, those who reject diplomacy
20:50as the only way to resolve controversial issues
20:53between countries will be fully responsible
20:56for the consequences of this reckless behavior.
21:04And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
