00:00Hello, I'm David Jeremiah, and I am seated in a place that I love to come to, and I do
00:07so almost every year.
00:09I'm in New York City, but more than that, I'm in the center of Times Square, a place
00:15where over 50 million people visit each year.
00:19This is literally the crossroads of the world.
00:23You know, the Bible says that all of us are going to spend somewhere for eternity.
00:32I would like to encourage you to consider the option of heaven, and during these next
00:37moments, we're going to share some things about heaven that you may not know, answer some
00:42questions you may have always had, but more than anything else, try to tell you how wonderful
00:47this place is that God has prepared for us.
00:50Do you know what he said about it?
00:51He said, eye has not seen, neither has ear heard, the things that God has prepared for
00:57those who love him.
00:59That's heaven, and we're going to talk about it for these next few moments from right here
01:03in Times Square.
01:21Well, Dr. Jeremiah, thank you so much for asking me to be a part of this heavenly kind of presentation,
01:31and we are in the middle of Times Square.
01:33This is a crossroads of the world.
01:36So much going on in the world, and I think it's an appropriate time, I would think, to talk
01:41about heaven.
01:43Amen.
01:43Why do you think it's so important?
01:45Well, you know, everybody starts out thinking they're going to have all of their wishes and
01:50joys experienced in this world, and then disappointment sets in.
01:54And the reason for that, Lauren, is that God never created us to be satisfied with this
01:58world.
01:59He created us to ultimately be satisfied with his presence.
02:03And the Bible says, in the presence of the Lord is joy forevermore.
02:07And what we all have in our heart is an eternity hole that can only be filled with heaven.
02:13And until we figure that out, we kind of run around chasing ourselves.
02:17You know, why is it really so important to be talking about heaven in a time like today?
02:23I think this space especially is good for that, because this is, somebody once told me,
02:28the creative center of the world.
02:30I don't know if that's true, but there's so much noise here, and there's so much activity
02:33here, and everybody seems to be on a race to get somewhere and do something.
02:38And the Bible is so clear about that.
02:40Heaven is the place where we find peace, and God is holding that out for us, and our realization
02:47that one day we're going to be with him, and all of this crazy running around is going
02:51to be over.
02:52Yeah.
02:53You know, one of the things that, you know, obviously we're in the middle of Times Square,
02:55and we hear the sirens around us, and there's a lot of brokenness.
03:00And I think the sirens remind us there's a lot of brokenness in this world.
03:04But one of the things that I remember when I first came to New York almost 30 years ago
03:10was that people were really, they didn't want to be religious.
03:14I don't want to be religious.
03:15I want to be spiritual.
03:17Exactly.
03:17How do you respond to someone that says, hey, you know what?
03:21I decide what's right and wrong for myself.
03:23I want to be spiritual, but I don't want to be associated with an institutional religion.
03:29Well, isn't it interesting to try to be spiritual without God?
03:32I mean, they're okay with being spiritual.
03:34It's just keep God out of it.
03:36And that is an oxymoron, because God is the source of spirituality.
03:41And if you want to know what it means to have a life that's filled with joy and peace and
03:45the presence of whatever it is they're looking for, you're going to find it in God.
03:49He's the source.
03:51You know, what are some of the misconceptions about heaven?
03:53Because there are so many people that have ideas about heaven.
03:56And, you know, people talk about like heaven on earth or, you know, heavens, you know.
04:00But what are some of the greatest misconceptions about heaven?
04:03One of my favorite statements I read when I was working on this book was the guy said,
04:06what do I want to go to heaven for?
04:08I've not even been to Hawaii.
04:10So I think that's where they are.
04:12I think people feel like heaven is someplace where you go and you don't do anything.
04:18You just sort of maybe float around on a cloud and strum a harp.
04:22But the Bible doesn't teach that at all.
04:24The Bible teaches heaven is a place of exciting activity and serving God and worshiping and
04:31all of the things that bring meaning to your life here on steroids there.
04:37Yeah, yeah.
04:37What about people who have really no biblical background?
04:40They live pretty much a secular life.
04:44You know, what about them?
04:46How do you talk about heaven with someone like that?
04:49Well, let me tell you something I learned.
04:51Ecclesiastes 3.11, it says,
04:54All things are beautiful and God has created eternity in our heart.
04:58I believe that God gives to every person when he creates them a space that belongs to eternity,
05:04a place that belongs to God, a place that belongs to heaven.
05:07And what are we chasing?
05:09I just read recently a statement by Tom Brady after he had won so many Super Bowls.
05:15And his statement was, is that all there is?
05:18You know, if we try to be fulfilled with the things we can find around us in Times Square,
05:25we're not going to be fulfilled because we weren't created to be fulfilled that way.
05:31You're watching Turning Point with Dr. David Jeremiah.
05:34Heaven, just thinking about it, stirs up questions.

06:49One of the things, and I know a little bit off-topic because we're talking about heaven,
06:56but in order to really understand heaven, do you also have to believe in a hell?
07:00Absolutely, because actually there's more about hell in the Bible than there is about heaven.
07:05And Jesus said more about hell than he said about heaven.
07:08Hell's not a happy thought, not a wonderful thing to talk about,
07:12but the formula is very clear.
07:15Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
07:17If no man comes to the Father except through me,
07:19you decide to go up some other way, you're not going to make it.
07:23And the alternative to that is a place of punishment.
07:26In that sense, because heaven looks almost too good to be true,
07:33is it too good to be true?
07:34Is it just this sort of idea, some place of perfection,
07:37that we can sort of dream about, but we really can never get there?
07:41Well, here's an illustration that helps me understand that.
07:44One of the problems people have with heaven is that the Bible says
07:49that in heaven we'll be like the angels, neither marrying nor giving in marriage.
07:52And people will say, well, my greatest joy in this life has been marriage.
07:56How am I going to ever enjoy heaven if I'm not going to be married
07:58to the person I've been married to?
08:00Yeah.
08:01And then I like to say to them, if you say that,
08:03it's only because you underestimate God.
08:05Because God wants to provide a joy so overwhelmingly beautiful and wonderful
08:11and ecstatic to you in heaven, that compared to that,
08:16what you know in marriage is not measurable.
08:19And I don't understand that, and I don't know how to comprehend that,
08:22except I believe that.
08:24That when we get to heaven, we'll know the joy of fellowship
08:27and union and connection with people.
08:30But our relationship with the Lord Jesus is going to be so awesome
08:34that everything else will pale in its presence.
08:38Is heaven an actual place?
08:40Absolutely.
08:41Or is it a state of mind?
08:43Well, I'll answer that with a scripture.
08:45Jesus said, in my Father's house are many mansions,
08:50and I go to prepare this place for you that where I am, there you might be also.
08:54So heaven is never, ever pictured in the Bible as a state of mind
08:58or a feeling or the best you can do here.
09:03Heaven is always a place, and God is preparing that place for us.
09:07How do you talk about heaven in the midst of a lot of pain and suffering?
09:13Is heaven your consolation prize to pain and suffering?
09:17Or how do you describe that?
09:19That's a really hard question, and I'm not going to underestimate the difficulty of it.
09:22But let me tell you this, heaven is a place where our pains are mitigated,
09:28where they're gone.
09:29And for many people who are watching us and listening to us,
09:33there is pain that is related to heaven,
09:36because the Bible teaches that children who are not of the age of accountability,
09:40they all go to heaven.
09:42That's very clear, and there's a whole chapter in this book about that.
09:45Wow.
09:45What about the children?
09:47My favorite story there is about David,
09:49who committed that sin with Bathsheba and killed her husband.
09:54And Nathan came and said, David, you're going to pay for this.
09:58And one of the ways you're going to pay for it is the child that you and Bathsheba have is going to die.
10:03And the Bible says David fasted and prayed, wouldn't eat,
10:06cried out to God that he would change his mind.
10:09And then they came and told him seven days later the child had died,
10:14and David got up and went and got dressed, changed his clothes, came out,
10:18and they said, what's the deal?
10:19And he said, I cannot bring that child back to me, but I shall go to my child.
10:25And David said in that setting, he knew in his heart that one day he would be with that child
10:30that was lost because of that sin.
10:32That brings so much comfort to so many people.
10:34I just recently lost my oldest sister.
10:37She passed away.
10:38And, you know, years ago I lost my brother.
10:41Both parents are gone.
10:43Would I see those people in heaven?
10:46Absolutely you will.
10:47And the Bible says you will recognize them.
10:49When Jesus came back from the grave, they saw him,
10:53and they knew he was the same Jesus they knew before he died, before he was buried.
10:57The Bible tells us that when we go to heaven,
10:59we're going to be given bodies like the resurrection body of Jesus.
11:02So if you want to know what that's going to be like,
11:05study how Jesus functioned during the 40 days after his resurrection,
11:08before he went back to heaven.
11:10He ate.
11:11People touched him.
11:12He was incarnate.
11:13He was not spirit.
11:15And that's the way we will be.
11:16We will have these incredible bodies.
11:18And I like to fantasize a little bit about how we're going to move about.
11:22You know, somebody asked me the other day, are we going to fly?
11:24I said, that's way better than that.
11:26Jesus one day walked into a room without going through the door and stood in the room with his
11:32apostles.
11:33And the Bible said the door's being shut.
11:35Jesus was in their midst.
11:37If we're going to have bodies like Jesus, we'll be able to do that.
11:40The excitement of that to me is overwhelming.
11:43You were talking about heaven being a physical place.
11:46Is it in another universe or is it here?
11:50Well, the Bible says it's going to be here.
11:52It's going to be here on the new heaven and new earth.
11:55And the city, the holy city, is going to descend down from the third heaven.
11:59And it will be an amazing.
12:02I mean, the description of heaven in Revelation, in the end of the book of Revelation,
12:07is so amazing, it's almost hard to believe.
12:11How do we get there?
12:12How do we know that we get there?
12:15Well, the Bible tells us very clearly, I mentioned this earlier, and these are the
12:20words of Jesus.
12:21These are not my words.
12:22Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
12:27No man comes to the Father except through me.
12:31Jesus didn't say, I'm one of the ways.
12:33He didn't say, I'll show you the way.
12:35He said, I am the way.
12:37If you come to Jesus and you receive him as your Savior and ask for forgiveness of your
12:42sin, you punch your ticket to heaven, and you make your reservation here.
12:48And only those who do that can go to heaven.
12:50You don't get a chance to stand at the end of your life and say, I wish I had done it.
12:54I'm going to do it now.
12:55You only get a chance to do that during the time of your own life.
12:58In a place like New York, in the secular world that we live in, when you say, when Christians
13:06repeat those words of Jesus, I'm the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to
13:10the Father but through me, that's a very hard truth for people who want to believe that all
13:15religions are equal.
13:16How do you confront that?
13:17I like to tell them this story.
13:20When Almighty God wanted to create physical life, he said, it's going to take two elements,
13:26sperm and the egg, and only those two things can create life.
13:30Very restrictive, very exclusive.
13:33He said, when I want to create spiritual life, only two things, the Holy Spirit and the Word
13:39of God.
13:39If you want to become a spiritual person, you shouldn't be surprised that God is just as
13:44exclusive as he is in the physical world.
13:47And it's not really exclusive.
13:49It's available to anyone.
13:51There's nobody left out.
13:52If anybody wants to come, they can.
13:54And Jesus certainly lays out the invitation for anyone who will come to him.
13:59And he's not willing that any should perish, but he's made it our own personal choice.
14:05And if we don't choose, we end up in the place we don't want to be.
14:10This is really about the justice of God.
14:12The justice is saying that I have provided a way that's just and equitable, and it's
14:19narrow, but it's open to everybody.
14:21Right.
14:21It is true.
14:22It is narrow.
14:23And people ask me all the time, will heaven be big enough?
14:26And I say, well, you probably have an exaggerated idea of how many people are going there.
14:31I'm not sure.
14:31But the Bible is very clear about how you get to heaven.
14:35And if there's one thing I want to make sure everybody knows, in fact, I'm not doing this
14:40interview so that people can be smarter about heaven.
14:44I want to take them to heaven.
14:45I want to go to heaven and take as many people with me as I can.
14:49I don't want anybody to miss heaven.
14:51I don't want anybody that's watching us to miss heaven.
14:53And I want to say to you in the simplest terms, you can go to heaven.
14:57And you can make sure you go to heaven right now by simply asking Christ to come into your life.
15:02I would love to give people an idea about how they tap into the heaven.
15:11How can they know that there is a heaven in the midst of their lives?
15:17I believe that most people automatically know.
15:21I think everybody automatically has this empty place and they know something's not right.
15:26Something's missing.
15:27And if they follow through on that, if they take that where it leads them, they will realize
15:33that it's because God has something special for them and he's waiting for them to receive it.
15:37One of the things that a lot of people talk about and they talk negatively about, especially
15:41about Christians, is this idea that they're all working for heaven, but they don't do any
15:46work on earth.
15:46They don't work to...
15:48So heavenly minded, no earthly good.
15:49So heavenly minded, they can't do any earthly good.
15:51Right.
15:52Well, I think that's kind of a stereotype because, Lauren, the people I know that are
15:57going to heaven, that love God, are the hardest working people I've ever met in my life.
16:02Just take this crew that's here this weekend doing this thing.
16:05These people have worked through the heat.
16:06They've worked all night.
16:07They've done everything they know how to do to make sure that we present this message
16:12in the best possible way.
16:14I really don't know any Christians who just say, hey, I'm going to heaven now.
16:19I can live like hell all the rest of my life.
16:22A person who does that betrays the sincerity of their motive and their decision.
16:27Because the Bible says when you accept Christ, he puts his spirit in you.
16:31And when his spirit in you, you can't do that stuff.
16:34Somebody once told me that when you become a Christian, you get a little wheel in here
16:36that goes around.
16:37And when you do something wrong, it pricks you and makes you realize the Holy Spirit is
16:43convicting you of something you shouldn't do.
16:45One of the great gifts of being a Christian is you get the Holy Spirit.
16:48And he helps you not to live the life that you once lived before Christ came.
16:53Well, that's interesting, too, because a lot of people are trying to earn their way to heaven.
16:56Absolutely.
16:57I mean, they're trying to earn their sake, you know, I've got to be good or else they won't
16:59go to heaven.
17:00How do people get that?
17:02Well, explain why that's not the right thinking.
17:04You know, that is the message of every religion, except Christianity, which isn't a religion.
17:11It's a relationship.
17:13Religion is an attempt on the part of man to reach up to God.
17:17What a foolhardy endeavor that is.
17:19He's perfect.
17:20He's never sinned.
17:22He never does wrong.
17:23And he requires that same standard from us.
17:27If indeed we try to reach him by the way of works, nobody can do it.
17:31So he sent his son, Jesus Christ, here, who himself was perfect, so that he could take
17:37that test for us.
17:38He took it on the cross.
17:40He passed the test 100%, and he now gives us the score if we put our trust in him.
17:45He's the one who has promised us that if we trust him, we won't have to live that way
17:51the rest of our lives.
17:52Well, this is the gospel.
17:53This is the gospel message, which is the good news.
17:55I remember one person says, you know, the gospel is good news, not good advice.
17:58Absolutely.
17:59Absolutely.
17:59One of the things, though, this is very funny, though, people's interpretation of what heaven
18:05would be as almost boring, really.
18:08I mean, you know, harps and clouds where we've got little wings, and we're just kind of being
18:16really good little angels up in heaven someplace.
18:19In Huckleberry Finn, the story is about this old woman who's trying to get Tom Sawyer's buddy
18:24ready to go to heaven.
18:25He wants nothing to do with it because it sounds really boring to him.
18:30And I tell people we're not going to be bored in heaven for a number of reasons.
18:34God is not boring.
18:35Jesus is not boring.
18:36And when you get there, you won't be boring either because you're going to be changed to
18:40be like Christ.
18:41Heaven's going to be the most exciting place we've ever been in our life.
18:44We can't imagine it.
18:45The Bible says in the presence of God is joy forevermore.
18:50I like to think about that in light of some of the pain that I see people going through
18:54here today.
18:55A lot of people on earth right now, they have a lot of talents, a lot of talents, musicians,
19:01athletes.
19:03Will people be able to enjoy heaven like that?
19:06Absolutely.
19:08You know, I always say to people, where do you think those people got their talent?
19:12Where do you think the people that are so good at these sports got their talent?
19:15God gave that gift to them and they nurtured that gift and it became their life and their
19:21goal, whether they know it or not.
19:23And when we get to heaven, there won't be any restrictions, limitations.
19:27We'll be able to play our sports and do the things that we do to the fullest with no negative
19:34drag on it at all.
19:36You know, why doesn't God just create heaven on earth for us right now?
19:40Why doesn't he just snap his fingers and get rid of the pain, get rid of the suffering,
19:47get rid of the turmoil, get rid of the war?
19:49Why doesn't he just do that?
19:51Well, for one thing, God is not accountable to us and he does not live in time.
19:59God created time.
20:00He lives in the ever-present now.
20:02God has a plan for all of this and in his wisdom and sovereignty, we submit to that plan.
20:11There's some of these things, the Bible says the secrets belong to God and I don't know
20:14some of the answers to those things.
20:16But what I do know is I trust God and I know that God is up to good for me, for you, and
20:24ultimately for those who will trust him.
20:26What would you say, I mean, I think there's just so many people who are hurting and there
20:32comes a point where they start to figure out or they start to ask questions about what is
20:38the purpose of my life?
20:40Why am I here?
20:42Who is God?
20:44Does he care?
20:47How do you respond to that kind of deep heart question?
20:52Well, that's why we're here.
20:54That's why we do what we do.
20:56Because, you know, I've been a pastor of the church for almost 50 years and I've seen
21:01people in the beginning of my time who wanted nothing to do with God, but through the things
21:06that have happened to them in life, maybe it's been the loss of a loved one or a divorce
21:10or whatever, they come to Christ and then they give their testimony in the baptistry and
21:15they say, I was without God.
21:17I didn't want anything to do with God, but then this happened.
21:20And when this happened, I realized how desperate I was for help outside of myself.
21:27And I think that's what happens.
21:28Everybody has their own story.
21:30And the stories often come to this crescendo where they have to make a decision.
21:37Turning Point's motto is take the unchanging word of God to the ever-changing world.
21:43That's what we try to do.
21:45And that means we don't ever change the message, but we change the methods.
21:49When we first started, I couldn't have dreamed of doing something like what we're doing right
21:52now.
21:53But we're doing it because we're trying to reach people in that special place and let
21:59them know there is an answer to their problems if they want it.
22:02And besides reading your book, of course, The Promise of Heaven, how else can people find
22:09about heaven?
22:10Where, I mean, what should they read in the Bible to talk about heaven?
22:14Well, you know, the internet is filled with it.
22:17If you click heaven on the internet, you'll be reading from now until next year.
22:23The Bible tells us if you want to know, you can know.
22:27And the reason we don't know is we don't really want to know.
22:31If you want to know, you can know.
22:33He who wants to know the truth will know it.
22:35It's a very, very powerful point.
22:37Can you just end with just some of your personal responses and just your final thoughts about
22:44heaven and what we should be thinking about and encouraging people?
22:49Well, I just want to say to you and to everybody who's watching that heaven is a worthy goal.
22:56And it is a goal that God has put in your heart to pursue.
23:01And until you pursue that goal, you will be flailing around trying to do everything,
23:06stuffing everything you can.
23:08And I see people do that.
23:09But until they decide, maybe I should just try this.
23:13Try this God thing and ask God to take control of my life.
23:17If they do that, they will discover there is a reality that goes beyond what you see and
23:24feel.
23:24It is a spiritual reality, but it is just as much a reality as everything you see.
23:30In fact, more of a reality in many respects.
23:33Dr. Jeremiah, I want to thank you so much for being a part of this interview and allowing
23:39me to do this today.
23:40Can you just end with a little prayer?
23:43Because I think that people around really need to hear a little prayer.
23:46Can you end with a little prayer?
23:47I'd be happy to do that.
23:48All right.
23:49We know that you are watching down on us from your heavenly throne.
23:53And we thank you that we could spend this time talking about you and bragging about your
24:00heaven, what you've prepared for those who love you and receive your son, Jesus Christ.
24:05And it's my prayer that those who are looking for answers and seeking hope will take the
24:12moment to investigate what the Bible says about Jesus and about heaven.
24:18And we, Lord, we close with this wonderful promise from John 14, where Jesus said,
24:23Let not your heart be troubled.
24:26You believe in God, believe also in me.
24:28In my Father's house are many mansions.
24:31And if it were not so, I would have told you.
24:33I go to prepare a place for you.
24:34And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself.
24:39That where I am, there you may be also.
24:42Almighty God, we accept your promise and determine to take as many people through that promise
24:49laying to heaven as possible.
24:51In Jesus' name, amen.
24:53Amen and amen.
24:54Thank you so much.
