03:01And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:05Won't Heaven Be Boring?
03:08Today I want to talk with you about the subject of heaven
03:11and why it won't be boring.
03:14And I want to begin with a little epitaph,
03:16an old poem about a tired housewife
03:18that's been shared for years in books and cards.
03:22I don't know who wrote it, but it goes like this.
03:24Here lies a poor woman who was always tired.
03:28She lived in a house where help wasn't hired.
03:32Her last words on earth were, dear friends, I am going
03:35where there's no cooking or washing or sewing.
03:39For everything there is exact to my wishes.
03:42For where they don't eat, there's no washing of dishes.
03:46I'll be where loud anthems will always be ringing,
03:48but having no voice, I'll be spared of the singing.
03:52Don't mourn for me now.
03:53Don't mourn for me never.
03:55I'm going to do nothing forever and ever.
03:58And, you know, that's what a lot of people think
03:59heaven is all about, isn't it?
04:01They think heaven is just going someplace
04:03and floating around on a cloud for eternity.
04:06And when you say that's not the way it is,
04:10well, isn't heaven boring, they say?
04:13And that's the ultimate put-down in today's society.
04:17If it's boring, it can't be good.
04:18I remember reading Michael Crichton,
04:21one of the most brilliant writers and producers in our time.
04:24He wrote a bestseller called Timeline.
04:26One of his characters, Robert Doniger,
04:29is the CEO of a powerful and highly secretive technology company.
04:33And near the end of the book, Doniger stands up
04:35before his audience in his company's auditorium,
04:38and he says this,
04:39And, of course, the iPhone has had a lot to do with that.
05:08We have to have something going on every minute of every day.
05:12And with that as the backdrop,
05:13the thought of going to heaven
05:14and there not being anything to do
05:17is frightening to most people.
05:19With this fear of boredom on our hearts,
05:21it's no wonder we're concerned about heaven.
05:23I mean, if we think we're bored down here,
05:25what in the world will it be like when we get up there?
05:29Unfortunately, there are just many Christians
05:31who believe that heaven will be boring.
05:34All we'll be doing forever is strumming harps,
05:37floating on clouds,
05:39and polishing the streets of gold.
05:42But I want to give you five reasons today
05:44why heaven will not be boring.
05:48Reason number one,
05:50heaven will not be boring because God is not boring.
05:53Amen.
05:57You've probably heard this verse before,
05:59but never in this context.
06:01What exists in God's presence?
06:16Fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore.
06:20When we're with God,
06:22we're on the scene of endless explosions
06:24of absolute pleasure and joy.
06:26And that's what heaven will always be like.
06:30Our God is the most exciting,
06:32adventuresome, creative person you can ever imagine.
06:36Multiplied a billion times over.
06:38And the new heavens and the new earth
06:40and the city of New Jerusalem
06:41will reflect his exuberance.
06:44We can't begin to comprehend the excitement
06:46that belongs to the triune God
06:49with whom we're going to spend eternity.
06:51He spoke the universe into existence.
06:54Think of that.
06:55He made the elephant,
06:57the eagle,
06:58the earthworm.
06:59He created a donkey that could speak.
07:02He created a fish that could swallow a man
07:05and a flock of ravens that could feed a prophet.
07:09He sweeps his hand across the sky,
07:12turning it into a crimson blaze of glory.
07:15He's the one who can ignite volcanoes
07:17and send meteors hurling through space
07:20and zap the blackened skies
07:22with lightning bolts and thunderclaps.
07:25God turned the Nile into blood
07:27and well water into wine.
07:30He flung fire from heaven
07:31in response to Elijah's prayers.
07:34He answered Job out of the whirlwind.
07:36He delivered Daniel from the lion's den,
07:38and he caused the sun and moon
07:40to stand still for Joshua.
07:43Randy Alcorn, who's written a book on heaven,
07:45a great book,
07:46he said,
07:48Our belief that heaven will be boring
07:49betrays a heresy that God is boring.
07:53There is no greater nonsense.
07:56Our desire for pleasure and the experience of joy
07:58come greatly and directly from God's hand.
08:02He made our taste buds.
08:04He made adrenaline.
08:06He made our sex drives
08:07and the nerve endings
08:08that convey pleasure to our brains.
08:10Likewise, our imaginations
08:13and our capacity for joy
08:15and exhilaration
08:15were made by the very God
08:17we accuse of being boring.
08:20Are we so arrogant
08:21that we imagine
08:22that human beings
08:23came up with the idea
08:24of having fun?
08:27No, heaven will not be boring
08:29because the God we love and serve
08:30is not boring.
08:34Here's a second reason.
08:36Heaven will not be boring
08:37not only because God is not boring
08:39but because Jesus is not boring.
08:42Heaven will not be boring
08:43because we'll be physically
08:45and visually close to Christ.
08:48Think of what an exciting life
08:50the apostles experienced.
08:52When you read the Gospels
08:53and every day they woke up,
08:54they didn't know what was going to happen.
08:56They were walking with the Son of God.
08:58They heard the Sermon on the Mount
08:59with their own ears.
09:01They watched their nets
09:02strain with fish
09:03at the bidding of Christ.
09:05They stood in awe
09:06as dead people returned to life.
09:08They participated
09:09in inexplicable miracles
09:11like the taming of vicious storms.
09:14They experienced
09:15the greatest surprise
09:16of their lives
09:17when Jesus suddenly appeared to them
09:19on the day of his resurrection.
09:21And he's going to be in heaven
09:23and you think heaven's
09:24going to be boring?
09:25Are you kidding me?
09:27All of us who have sought
09:28to walk with Christ
09:29through the years
09:30know that the Christian life
09:32is one of joy
09:33and comfort,
09:35excitement,
09:36and sometimes uncertainty
09:37as we wait to see
09:38what the Lord is going to do next.
09:40But he's with us
09:41in every pattern of weather
09:43as our lives change.
09:45He gives daily strength
09:46for daily needs.
09:48He provides promises
09:49and answers prayer.
09:50Listen to me.
09:51The Christian life
09:52is a great adventure
09:53if you walk with the Lord.
09:54But let me put this
09:59all in perspective for you.
10:01Peter said,
10:02Whom having not seen,
10:04you love.
10:05Though now you do not see him,
10:07yet believing,
10:08you rejoice with joy
10:09inexpressible and full of glory.
10:11Everything I've described
10:12to you so far
10:13is for us to view
10:15through our reading
10:17and through our minds.
10:18We haven't seen it,
10:19but one day
10:19we're going to see him
10:21and the Bible says
10:21we shall be like him
10:22for we shall see him
10:23as he is.
10:24If he's as wonderful
10:25as he is having not seen him,
10:26wait till we see him.
10:27And when we see him,
10:29he's going to be overwhelming.
10:33So, heaven won't be boring
10:35because God is not boring
10:37and Jesus is not boring
10:39and you're going to have
10:40to really trust me
10:41with this one.
10:42Heaven will not be boring
10:43because you will not be boring.
10:47Where in the world
10:48do you find that
10:49in the Bible, Dr. Jeremiah?
10:51Well, let me tell you
10:53what Paul wrote.
10:54He said,
10:54Behold, I tell you a mystery.
10:55We shall not all sleep,
10:57but we shall all be changed
10:59in a moment
10:59in the twinkling of an eye
11:01at the last trumpet.
11:03Paul said we're all going to be,
11:05what?
11:06Changed.
11:08Not changed for the worst,
11:10changed for the better.
11:12In Philippians,
11:13he put it another way.
11:14For our citizenship
11:15is in heaven
11:16from which we all
11:18so eagerly wait
11:19for the Savior,
11:20the Lord Jesus Christ.
11:22Now watch this.
11:23Who will transform
11:25our lowly body
11:26that it may be conformed
11:28to his glorious body.
11:30What Paul is telling us
11:32in these two passages
11:32of Scripture
11:33is that when we go to heaven
11:35on our way up,
11:36we're going to be transformed
11:37and we're going to get bodies
11:38just like the resurrection body
11:40of the Lord Jesus Christ.
11:42They won't age.
11:43They won't get tired.
11:44They won't malfunction
11:46or grow sick or weak.
11:47And we'll have
11:48all the energy
11:49and drive
11:49and ambition imaginable
11:51and our bodies
11:52will never weaken
11:53or suffer fatigue.
11:55We can be
11:55at the full height of joy
11:57every day,
11:5824 hours a day
11:59without ever wearing out.
12:00Can you imagine that?
12:05As you know,
12:06I have been,
12:07I guess you could call it sick.
12:09I've had this condition
12:11that I got on Labor Day
12:12in 23
12:13where I lost the use
12:14of the lower part of my body
12:15and I've been trying
12:16to get it back
12:17little by little
12:18and it's coming back.
12:19But what I've discovered
12:20during this time
12:21was I've had to have
12:22sort of an edited version
12:24of the old David Jeremiah.
12:26The old David Jeremiah
12:27would say yes to anything
12:28anybody ask him to do
12:29and do it with all his heart
12:30and tired at night
12:32but do it again the next day.
12:33But I can't do that anymore.
12:35You have to put your situation
12:37into the setting
12:38that you can do.
12:39As you get older,
12:40things get different
12:41and you can't do
12:42everything you used to do.
12:43I know that doesn't
12:44sound like good news.
12:45It's just true.
12:47The Bible says
12:48our resurrected
12:48and heavenly bodies,
12:50we're going to be
12:51able to experience
12:53everything
12:54at the highest
12:55experience value
12:58all the time
12:59without ever being tired
13:00of being happy.
13:02Can you imagine that?
13:06So,
13:07heaven won't be boring
13:08because God the Father
13:09is not going to be boring
13:11and he'll be there.
13:12Jesus Christ,
13:13who will be there
13:14in his human body,
13:16he won't be boring.
13:17We know what he's like.
13:18We've studied him
13:19in the Gospels.
13:20You'll be there
13:21and you won't be boring
13:22because you're going
13:23to have a makeover
13:24on the way up.
13:27And then the Bible
13:28teaches also
13:28that heaven will not be boring
13:30because your friendships
13:31won't be boring.
13:32Some people say,
13:33well, when I get to heaven,
13:34I won't know anybody.
13:35Well, friendship doesn't end
13:38at heaven's gate.
13:39It will flourish
13:40like never before.
13:42The Scripture hints
13:43that our relationships
13:45won't be erased,
13:46but they'll be redeemed.
13:48They'll be deepened.
13:50They'll be made eternal.
13:52Jesus spoke of sitting down
13:53with Abraham, Isaac,
13:54and Jacob
13:55in the kingdom.
13:57And Paul encouraged believers
13:58with the hope
13:59that we'll be reunited
14:00together forever
14:01with our families
14:03and our loved ones.
14:04In Luke 16, 9,
14:06Jesus spoke of
14:07eternal dwellings
14:08where friends
14:09welcome each other.
14:11Imagine strolling
14:12through the golden streets
14:13of the New Jerusalem
14:14with a friend,
14:16marveling at the breathtaking beauty
14:18of God's creation,
14:20walking together
14:21by the crystal-clear river of life,
14:24watching the trees bear fruit
14:26in every season,
14:27and join the multitudes
14:29in worshiping the Lamb
14:30who was slain.
14:32Every moment will be filled
14:33with pure joy,
14:35deep love,
14:36and wonder,
14:36no jealousy,
14:38no insecurity,
14:39no weariness,
14:40just the love of Christ.
14:47And then this one
14:49might surprise you,
14:50but it doesn't surprise me
14:51because I understand
14:52this one completely.
14:54Heaven will not be boring
14:55because your work
14:57will not be boring.
14:58Work is a blessing.
15:00It's not a curse.
15:02Somebody said,
15:03if you do something
15:03you like to do,
15:04you'll never work
15:05a day in your life.
15:06That's kind of the way I feel.
15:07You know, I don't work.
15:08This is what I do.
15:10This is who I am.
15:11Well, heaven is not
15:12a place of idleness.
15:14It's a place of joyful activity
15:16and meaningful service.
15:19One of the most consistent themes
15:20running through
15:21the book of Revelation
15:22is that of serving God.
15:24When we're in heaven,
15:25we're going to serve God.
15:26From beginning to end,
15:28heaven is described
15:29as a realm
15:30where God's people serve him.
15:32I could give you
15:33many, many scriptures.
15:35Here's a few.
15:36Revelation 7, 15,
15:38Therefore they are
15:39before the throne of God,
15:41and they serve him
15:42day and night
15:43in his temple.
15:45Revelation 19, 5,
15:47Then a voice from the throne
15:48saying,
15:49Praise our God,
15:50all you his servants
15:51and those who fear him,
15:53both great and small.
15:55Revelation 22, 3,
15:56And there shall be
15:57no more curse,
15:58but the throne of God
15:59and of the Lamb
16:00shall be in it,
16:01and his servants
16:02shall serve him.
16:04And when you get to heaven
16:06and you walk in the door
16:07as a believer,
16:08listen to the welcoming speech
16:10you're going to get from God.
16:12Well done,
16:12good and faithful servant.
16:14You have been faithful
16:15over a few things.
16:17I will make you ruler
16:18over many things.
16:20You had a little job here,
16:22but I'm giving you
16:23a big job up here.
16:25Enter into the joy
16:27of your Lord.
16:27And that verse
16:28doesn't sound to me
16:29like we're going to be
16:30sitting around
16:30doing nothing forever
16:31and ever in heaven.
16:33Doesn't sound like
16:34retirement,
16:35but a promotion.
16:36In other words,
16:37eternal life
16:38is not a break from work.
16:40It is a breakthrough
16:40to better work.
16:42It is purpose
16:44without pressure,
16:45it's service
16:45without fatigue,
16:46and it's joy
16:47without end.
16:49So, there you have it.
16:50Five reasons
16:51why heaven won't be boring.
16:53Don't forget them.
16:54God won't be boring.
16:56Jesus won't be boring.
16:58You won't be boring.
17:00Your work won't be boring.
17:02The Bible teaches us
17:03there's a lot of good reasons
17:04to get excited about heaven.
17:07Heaven is everything
17:07you've ever enjoyed on earth
17:09multiplied a million times over
17:11if it's good and godly.
17:14Romans 8, 22 and 23 says,
17:17For we know
17:18that the whole creation
17:19groans and labors
17:20with birth pangs
17:21together until now.
17:24Not only that,
17:25but we also who have
17:26the firstfruits of the Spirit,
17:27even we ourselves
17:28groan within ourselves,
17:30waiting for the adoption,
17:32the redemption of our body.
17:34Paul wrote to the Romans
17:35and he said,
17:37We Christians,
17:37we groan
17:38because we were made
17:40for more
17:40than what we can ever experience
17:42in this world.
17:43We were not created
17:45to have ultimate joy
17:46in this world.
17:47We were created
17:48to have ultimate joy
17:49in heaven
17:50when we get with God.
17:51So, heaven won't be boring
17:52because it's the fulfillment
17:54of every desire
17:55in your heart.
17:55The most tragic strain
18:02in human existence
18:04lies in the fact
18:06that the pleasure
18:06which we find
18:07in the things of this life,
18:09however good
18:10that pleasure may be
18:11in itself,
18:13it's always taken away
18:14from us.
18:16The things for which
18:17men strive
18:17hardly ever turn out
18:18to be as satisfying
18:19as they expected,
18:21and in the rare cases
18:22in which they do,
18:23sooner or later
18:25they are snatched away.
18:27Here's a surprise.
18:29One writer put it this way.
18:30God made us this way.
18:33He made us to yearn,
18:34to always be hungry
18:35for something we can't get,
18:37to always be missing
18:39something we can't find,
18:41and an untamable restlessness
18:43that no discovery can still.
18:45Yearning itself is healthy,
18:47a kind of compass inside of us
18:49pointing us true north.
18:51We long for heaven,
18:53and we long for God,
18:54and when we finally
18:55get to heaven,
18:56that longing will be met,
18:57and it will be
18:58the most fulfilling
18:59and satisfying emotion
19:00we have ever known.
19:02It will be the exact
19:03opposite of boring.
19:04I can hear us all saying,
19:06aha, finally,
19:08now it's all together.
19:10This is what I've been
19:11looking for all of my life.
19:13Amen.
19:17King David had that hunger,
19:19and it came out
19:21in many of his psalms,
19:22especially in this one,
19:23Psalm 27, 4.
19:26One thing I have desired
19:27of the Lord,
19:28that I will seek,
19:30that I may dwell
19:31in the house of the Lord
19:32all the days of my life,
19:34to behold the beauty
19:35of the Lord
19:36and to inquire
19:37in his temple.
19:39David didn't want
19:40more of this world.
19:41He wanted more
19:42of the presence of God,
19:44and that is where
19:45our deepest satisfaction
19:46will always be found.
19:48Only in heaven
19:49will we finally feel
19:50the completeness
19:51that we were created
19:53to enjoy.
19:54I know I'm in New York City
19:56where Broadway reigns
19:58and where plays
20:00are pretty prominent,
20:02and so you bear with me
20:03if I just use
20:04this closing illustration
20:05carefully.
20:07There are a few songs
20:08that capture our desire
20:10for heaven
20:10like Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
20:13It swept the world
20:14like a tornado
20:15when Judy Garland,
20:16playing Dorothy,
20:17sang it in the 1939 film
20:19The Wizard of Odds.
20:22In an early scene,
20:23Dorothy wonders out loud,
20:25Do you suppose
20:25there is such a place?
20:27Behind the moon,
20:28behind the rain.
20:30Then she begins to sing
20:31Somewhere Over the Rainbow,
20:34Way Up High.
20:36The songwriters,
20:38Yip Harburg
20:39and Harold Arlen
20:40were both sons
20:41of Jewish immigrants.
20:43They wrote this song
20:44in 1939
20:45as war loomed over Europe,
20:47and though safe in America,
20:49they felt the ache
20:50for something more,
20:51peace, safety,
20:53a place to belong.
20:54I think something like
20:55what we feel
20:55at this very time
20:56in our own lives.
20:58So they gave the world
20:59a lyric that still
21:00pulls at our heart.
21:02Somewhere over the rainbow,
21:03way up high,
21:05there's a land
21:06that I heard of once
21:07in a lullaby.
21:09Somewhere over the rainbow,
21:10skies are blue,
21:11and the dreams
21:12that you dare to dream
21:13really do come true.
21:16It's in our DNA
21:17to long for a better place,
21:20to ache for a place
21:21way up high
21:22where dreams
21:22really do come true.
21:24There's only one place
21:25like that, friends,
21:26and it's called heaven.
21:34Huckleberry Finn
21:35didn't think much
21:36about heaven.
21:37In the opening chapter
21:39of Mark Twain's classic,
21:40The Adventures
21:41of Huckleberry Finn,
21:43Huck is living
21:44with the spinster,
21:45Miss Watson,
21:46a starchy,
21:47crabby old woman
21:48who is bent
21:48on reforming him,
21:50and she's going
21:51to knock the wildness
21:52out of him
21:52and stuff him
21:53full of manners.
21:55Her principal weapon
21:56was religion.
21:58She bludgeons him
22:00with Bible verses.
22:01She threatens him
22:02with hell.
22:03She coaxes him
22:04with heaven,
22:05and in his streetwise,
22:07cocky, cockeyed way,
22:09Huck tells us
22:10what he thinks
22:10of all of that.
22:12He says,
22:13She went on
22:14and told me
22:14all about the good place.
22:16She said,
22:17All a body
22:18would have to do there
22:19was go around all day
22:20with a harp
22:20and sing forever and ever.
22:22So, I didn't think
22:23much of it.
22:24I asked her
22:25if she reckoned
22:25Tom Sawyer
22:26would go there,
22:27and she said,
22:27Not by a considerable sight.
22:29But I was glad
22:30about that
22:31because I wanted
22:31him and me
22:32to be together.
22:34Can you blame him
22:35if that's what heaven is?
22:37An endless,
22:38dull hymn
22:38singing in the clouds.
22:39Who would want
22:40to go there?
22:41But that's not
22:42the heaven
22:43the Bible describes.
22:44Let me say it again.
22:45Heaven will not be boring,
22:46not even close,
22:47because God
22:48isn't boring,
22:49you aren't boring,
22:50your friends aren't boring,
22:51your work isn't boring,
22:52and most of all,
22:53heaven is the place
22:54your soul
22:55has been searching for
22:56for your entire life.
22:58So, don't let anybody
22:59tell you otherwise.
23:00Heaven will be
23:01the most thrilling,
23:02joy-filled,
23:03adventure-packed reality
23:05you have ever known,
23:07multiplied beyond
23:07anything you can imagine.
23:09You want to know
23:10what boring is?
23:12Imagine being locked
23:13in solitary confinement
23:15forever,
23:16cut off from
23:17every relationship,
23:18stuck with nothing
23:19but regret.
23:21That's how the Bible
23:21describes hell.
23:24Thessalonians 1.9 says,
23:25These shall be punished
23:27with everlasting destruction
23:28from the presence
23:30of the Lord
23:31and from the glory
23:32of His power.
23:33In hell,
23:34there will be
23:34no friendships,
23:36no laughter,
23:37no hope,
23:38just endless separation.
23:41When I was in seminary
23:42at Dallas, Texas,
23:43I worked in the
23:44trucking industry
23:45during the afternoons
23:47to pay my tuition.
23:49The guys there
23:50were not Christian guys.
23:51They were pretty
23:52rough characters.
23:54And they used to
23:54pick on me.
23:55They called me
23:56preacher boy,
23:56preacher Joe.
23:58And they would always
23:59come into my truck
24:00and I'd be working in there
24:01and they'd get me going
24:02and they'd start saying
24:03stuff like,
24:03I'm going to hell
24:04and party with my buddies.
24:06But I realized
24:07they had it backwards.
24:09Hell isn't the party.
24:10It's the absence
24:11of everything good.
24:13Heaven is the party.
24:14Heaven is where the joy is.
24:16And here's the best part.
24:18You can know today
24:19that heaven is in your future.
24:21For Jesus said,
24:22I go to prepare
24:23a place for you
24:24that where I am
24:26there you may be also.
24:27And he made it so simple.
24:29He said,
24:30I am the way,
24:31the truth,
24:32and the life,
24:33and no one comes
24:34to the Father
24:35except through me.
24:37What a wonderful promise
24:38that is.
24:38He didn't just say,
24:39go that way.
24:41No, he said,
24:41I am the way.
24:42I will take you to heaven.
24:43If you want to go to heaven,
24:45you have to let Jesus
24:45take you there
24:46by accepting
24:47what he did on the cross
24:48for your sin
24:49and asking for forgiveness.
24:52And when you pray
24:52that prayer,
24:53you will invite
24:54Jesus Christ
24:55into your life
24:56and you will become
24:56a Christian.

25:54The promise of heaven
25:55is a great comfort to us
25:56as we go through this life.
25:59But the fact is,
26:01there is only one way
26:02to gain entrance
26:03We can't get to heaven
26:05by being nice people.
26:07We can't get there
26:08by doing more good
26:10than bad.
26:11We can't get there
26:12by rites or rituals.
26:14You see,
