03:01And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:04Tough-Minded About Heaven.
03:05In his second letter,
03:10Peter ended his letter with a question.
03:13After describing the renovation of the world
03:16at the end of the age, he said,
03:18Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved,
03:23what manner of persons ought you to be?
03:27That question is at the heart of our study today.
03:31Now that we know what the Bible teaches about heaven,
03:34now that we know that God's future
03:36has wonderful plans for his children,
03:40the question then is, how should we now live?
03:43Because of what we know is coming,
03:46how should our life be changed?
03:48So, in the verses that follow,
03:50Peter tells us the answer to that question,
03:53and I want to share them with you today.
03:56In 1 Peter 1.13, the apostle uses a term
04:00that is the biblical equivalent of tough-mindedness.
04:03Here's what he wrote.
04:05Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind.
04:10Now, that's not a term we would use today.
04:12We don't use the word gird, loins of our minds.
04:14I've never said that in any normal conversation.
04:17But Peter is using an ancient expression
04:20which described the gathering up around the waist
04:24of the long eastern robes
04:26that would impede one's progress in running.
04:29They would gird these robes up around them
04:31and tie them in a knot
04:32so that when they ran,
04:33the robes didn't get in their way.
04:35In other words, Peter is telling his readers
04:38to put out of their minds
04:40all of the things that can cause them to stumble,
04:43the things that will get in their way
04:45of thinking God's thoughts after him.
04:47He's saying,
04:48gird up the loins of your mind.
04:51Tough-mindedness means saying no
04:53to the mental junk of the world.
04:57These distractions get in the way
04:58of what the Holy Spirit wants to do in our minds,
05:01and they keep us from focusing on what matters to God.
05:06Here from 2 Peter are five things
05:09that demand our tough-mindedness.
05:11These are five things that are true
05:13because Jesus is coming back.
05:15Five things that are true
05:17because there is a heaven and a hell.
05:18Five things that are true
05:20because if we take them seriously,
05:23we know where we're headed.
05:25You can't know about heaven
05:27and believe in heaven,
05:29be confident that you're going to heaven
05:30without it changing the things
05:33that you do on the earth
05:34in anticipation of it.
05:36First of all, Peter said,
05:39because we're going to heaven,
05:40we should be tough-minded about purity.
05:432 Peter 3.11 reads like this,
05:45Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved,
05:48what manner of persons ought you to be
05:51in holy conduct and godliness.
05:56In this one verse,
05:57Peter describes the lifestyle of a Christ follower
06:00who understands the future plan of God.
06:03Notice, first of all, he says,
06:04we ought to be people of holy conduct.
06:08That doesn't mean we walk around with halos on our head.
06:11It means we live righteously.
06:12The word holy means to be set apart
06:15for the service of God.
06:16Peter addressed this same thing in his first letter.
06:20Listen to these words.
06:22Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind,
06:24be sober, rest your hope fully upon grace
06:27that is to be brought to you
06:28at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
06:31As obedient children,
06:32not conforming yourselves to the former lusts,
06:35as in your ignorance,
06:37but as he who has called you is holy,
06:39you also be holy in all your conduct,
06:42because it is written,
06:43be holy, for I am holy.
06:46Peter tells us that we're to be tough-minded
06:48about godliness.
06:49This illustrates the importance of our inward attitude.
06:53The word godliness means to have a God-word attitude,
06:57that God is included in our thought process.
07:00He is the leader in the way we think.
07:02He doesn't just have a seat at the table.
07:04He is the originator and leader
07:06and director of our thought process.
07:08We do things that are well-pleasing to him.
07:11Tough-minded about purity.
07:13There's never been a time
07:14when more people's lives were at stake
07:16at this issue than there is today,
07:18because there's never been a time
07:20when seduction has been more intense
07:22in every aspect of life
07:24than it is in this very hour.
07:27So, here's what the Bible says.
07:28Gird up the loins of your mind.
07:31Get tough-minded about this.
07:33You take control,
07:34and don't let that take control of you.
07:36Then, tough-minded about promises.
07:39In verse 12, he says,
07:40looking for and hastening
07:42the coming of the day of God.
07:45According to Peter,
07:46it's easy to become indifferent
07:48to the future and to what it means.
07:51In fact, in 2 Peter,
07:53he says that in the end times,
07:56scoffers will come,
07:58walking according to their own lusts
08:00and saying,
08:01where is the promise of his coming?
08:02They will poo-poo the coming of Christ.
08:07They will say,
08:08it's just in your mind,
08:09or I know you guys need to believe that,
08:11and if that's what you need to believe,
08:13and they're scoffers.
08:15Their mockery stems from
08:16a short-sighted view of life.
08:18They think because Jesus hasn't come
08:20since he announced he was coming
08:22that he won't come,
08:23and they believe that God's working
08:25on their time schedule.
08:27The Bible says,
08:28one day with the Lord
08:28is like a thousand years.
08:30A thousand years is one day.
08:32What does that mean?
08:33It means that God never looks at his watch
08:35because God's timing is perfect.
08:39I believe it's soon, don't you?
08:42We see the things happening around us today
08:45that remind us that,
08:46while we can't tell you for sure
08:48when the Lord is coming,
08:49we can sure identify the season of his coming.
08:53And more things are on the plate right now
08:55than ever have been before
08:56than I can remember,
08:57even the nations coming together
08:59in certain patterns
09:00and things that are happening around the world.
09:03One thing we know for sure,
09:04our redemption is nearer now
09:06than when we first believed.
09:08His coming will be soon.
09:09And because of that,
09:11we need to be tough-minded about our profession.
09:15Don't let people push you in a corner
09:17about your faith in the return of Christ.
09:20Our citizenship is in heaven,
09:22and the Bible says,
09:23as we eagerly wait for the Savior,
09:25the Lord Jesus Christ.
09:28One writer captured this perspective with these words,
09:32a habitual contemplation of the truth
09:35that all we see is soon to pass away
09:38would produce a most solemn effect on our minds.
09:42It would make us serious.
09:43It would lead us not to desire
09:45to accumulate what must soon be destroyed.
09:48It would prompt us to lay up treasures in heaven.
09:51It would cause us to ask with deep earnestness
09:53whether we are prepared for these amazing scenes
09:57should they suddenly burst upon us.
10:00In other words,
10:01what if we knew for certain,
10:03if it was absolutely without possibility of not happening,
10:07if we knew for certain two weeks from now
10:09Jesus would come,
10:10and we'd be ushered into heaven,
10:12spend our eternity there,
10:13how would that change the way
10:15we spend these next two weeks?
10:17We would make a whole lot of different kinds of decisions
10:20would we know that.
10:21But, ladies and gentlemen, we know that.
10:24We know he's coming soon.
10:27We know it could happen at any moment in our lifetime.
10:31How then, says the Scripture, should we live?
10:34That's the question.
10:35How is heaven,
10:36and knowing that we're going to spend eternity there,
10:39making a difference in how we live today?
10:42Thirdly, tough-minded about our purpose.
10:44Second Peter 3.14 says,
10:47Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things,
10:51be diligent to be found by him in peace
10:55without spot and blameness.
10:58Here's the thing I think is really hard
10:59for people to understand.
11:02Holiness is hard.
11:04Say that with me.
11:06Holiness is hard.
11:08We don't just become holy
11:09because we put a Bible under our pillow at night
11:11and sleep on it.
11:12We're not holy because we come to church.
11:15We don't become holy
11:16because we know a few Scriptures
11:17or sing a few songs.
11:19Holiness is the daily diligent pursuit
11:22of righteousness in our life.
11:24And it's interesting
11:25that Peter uses the word diligent.
11:29To be diligent means to do your best,
11:32to make haste, to take care.
11:33Our modern Merriam-Webster dictionary says,
11:36diligence is steady, earnest, energetic effort.
11:42The original author of that dictionary
11:44was Noah Webster,
11:46who was himself a dedicated Christian.
11:49He published his dictionary in 1806.
11:54He was known for his diligence.
11:56He worked day and night for many years
11:59to produce his world-famous work
12:01in which he defined 70,000 words
12:04and helped shape the American language.
12:07His original definition of the word diligence
12:09is one of the best I've ever read.
12:11Here's what he says,
12:13constant in effort or exertion
12:15to accomplish what is undertaken,
12:17industrious, not idle, or negligent.
12:22Peter says,
12:23when it comes to your walk with the Lord,
12:24be diligent.
12:25Don't be haphazard.
12:27Don't be lazy.
12:28Don't be passive.
12:30Go after it with all you have.
12:32Find out the things that you know
12:34that make you grow in Christ
12:35and help you to be a better Christian
12:37and concentrate on them.
12:39Don't miss church
12:41because you want to do something.
12:42Whatever it is that you want to do
12:44that causes you to miss church,
12:45most of it's not worth that choice.
12:48And in our culture today,
12:49they've programmed everything on Sunday
12:51as if to concentrate on people not going to church,
12:55and you have to be diligent
12:56to not let that happen to you.
12:58You have to stand up and say,
13:00no, church is a critical, important issue in my life,
13:04and I'm not going to let you take that away from me.
13:07Those are illustrations that help me understand
13:10what it means to be diligent.
13:12Take your goal, put it out in front of you,
13:15and don't let anybody dissuade you from it.
13:18And if you do that,
13:19you will learn how to be tough-minded about your purpose.
13:22So Peter's given us this incredible list,
13:26tough-minded about our purity,
13:27our promises, our purpose,
13:30tough-minded about our profession.
13:31He says,
13:32therefore, beloved,
13:33since you know this beforehand,
13:35beware lest you fall from your own steadfastness,
13:39being led away with the error of the wicked.
13:42Peter says,
13:43if you know you're going to heaven,
13:44don't get lazy-minded.
13:46Don't just sit around and think,
13:48this is cool, I'm going to heaven, everything's fine,
13:50because the enemy will come after you.
13:52The Bible says he goes about as a roaring lion,
13:56seeking whom he may destroy.
13:59The enemy is out to dissuade you from your holy righteousness.
14:03I don't believe Peter was saying we can fall from our salvation.
14:07He was exhorting us to be strong in our profession of faith,
14:10to know what we believe,
14:12and let nothing keep us from believing it.
14:16We are responsible before God to stay rooted and grounded in faith,
14:19to rightly divide the word of truth.
14:22Do you know that when Peter, Paul, and James were doing their job,
14:27they were inundated by false teachers?
14:30We have a lot of false teachers today.
14:32They're more seductive.
14:35They're more kind of in the background.
14:36They just sort of sneak their way in.
14:38They get their little false teaching,
14:40and they surround it with biblical truth as if it were from God.
14:44But in Paul's day, it was just blatant false teaching,
14:47and they were constantly exposed to it.
14:50And I want to tell you,
14:51the devil still has his agents who ask,
14:54did God really say that?
14:56That's how Satan works.
14:57He makes us doubt his word.
14:59And then the next thing we know,
15:01we become a victim of his craft.
15:05Finally, Peter says,
15:07be tough-minded about your progress.
15:09This is my favorite point in the whole list.
15:11He says,
15:13but grow in the grace and knowledge
15:15of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
15:18To him be the glory both now and forever.
15:20Amen.
15:20You know why that's important?
15:22That's the last thing Peter ever said
15:24that's recorded in the Bible.
15:25He said,
15:26grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord.
15:28And the question then comes to all of us,
15:30am I growing in grace?
15:32Am I growing as a Christian?
15:34This is one of Peter's exhortations in this chapter.
15:37He says we're to grow in grace
15:39and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
15:42And the best way to overcome those who are coming after you
15:45is keep growing.
15:47You're going so fast they can't catch you.
15:49You're becoming a Christian of such magnitude
15:52that they don't know where to get at you.
15:55The least thing you can do is sit back and worry
15:58about people coming after you to destroy you,
16:00and you're not growing.
16:01Be a growing, aggressive Christian.
16:04And if you are that, according to Peter,
16:06you will be blessed.
16:08You say, Pastor, how do I grow?
16:10Well, you grow through the will of God.
16:13Philippians 1, 6, being confident of this very thing,
16:16that he who has begun a good work in you
16:18will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
16:21Did you know that God wants you to grow?
16:24He's the one who started the work in your heart,
16:26and when you first believed,
16:28and he's not going to quit on you,
16:29he doesn't leave things half finished.
16:32He wants you to grow and be mature.
16:34That's his purpose.
16:35That should be your purpose.
16:38Growth comes through the watchfulness of prayer,
16:411 Peter 4, 7,
16:42but the end of all things is at hand.
16:44Therefore, be serious and watchful in your prayers.
16:48The closer we come to Christ's return,
16:50the more we need prayer.
16:52I know it's not always easy,
16:54but praying creates a climate for spiritual growth.
16:57Praying Christians are growing Christians.
17:00And then, number three, growth comes through the Word of God.
17:05Revelation 22, 7 says,
17:07Behold, I am coming quickly.
17:09Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.
17:14And, ladies and gentlemen,
17:15that's what we're all about here in this church.
17:17When you come to this church every weekend,
17:19you should expect to be nourished up in the good Word of God.
17:22I don't have a motivational message for you.
17:25I don't have any travelogue I'm going to give you.
17:28I'm not a historian.
17:29I know how to do one thing,
17:31and that's nourish you up in the good Word of God.
17:33And the Bible says
17:34that the Word of God is the source of our growth.
17:37When you read the Word of God
17:39and study the Word of God
17:40and the Word of God gets in your heart,
17:41it causes you to grow.
17:43That's why it's called the milk
17:44that you drink when you're first a Christian.
17:47And then later on, it's called the meat of the Word.
17:51As newborn babes desire the pure milk of the Word
17:55that you may grow thereby, 1 Peter 2, 2.
18:00And then growth comes not only through the will of God
18:04and the watchfulness of prayer and the Word of God,
18:06growth comes through the work of the church.
18:09And I want to just explain all of this today the best I can.
18:14Hebrews 10 says,
18:16we're to consider one another
18:17in order to keep up love and good works,
18:20and we're to assemble together every week.
18:22We're to come together as God's people.
18:24Now, I know that's a strange thing.
18:26Many of you who are listening on the Internet,
18:27you're going to be upset by this,
18:28but I hope you do get upset and do something about it.
18:31Here's what I want to tell you.
18:32If you're able-bodied and you live near a church,
18:35you should be in church.
18:36You shouldn't be listening to me on the Internet.
18:38You should be in church.
18:39You say, well, Pastor,
18:40I'm going to just shut you off then from now on.
18:42God does some of his best work in the church.
18:46That's why he wants you to be there.
18:48He knows that you need to be there,
18:51and he knows the church needs you to be there
18:53because that's where you will grow.
18:55One man who embodied all of this
18:57was a man by the name of Dr. Charles McCoy.
19:00Dr. McCoy never married,
19:03but he devoted his life to pastoring a church
19:06in Oyster Bay, New York.
19:07During the time he was pastoring that church,
19:10he earned seven college degrees.
19:13And at 72, he retired,
19:16not certain what he was going to do for the future.
19:19Then he met a missionary who invited him to India.
19:22Though hesitant at first, he agreed,
19:24and when warned of the risks, McCoy simply said,
19:28it's just as close to heaven from India
19:30as it is from here.
19:33Soon after arriving in Bombay, he was robbed.
19:37He lost his passport,
19:38and then he discovered the missionary
19:41he'd planned to meet was gone.
19:43At a loss, he decided to visit the mayor's office.
19:48Dr. McCoy handed his business card to the receptionist
19:50who was told to return that afternoon,
19:52and when he did, he was surprised
19:54to find a reception in his honor.
19:57Attended by prominent officials of Bombay,
19:59his commanding presence, his white hair,
20:01his long-listed degrees made him appear
20:04like he was a U.S. dignity,
20:06so they all came out to welcome him.
20:09Dr. McCoy spoke for 30 minutes,
20:12giving his testimony about Jesus.
20:14Afterward, a military officer invited him
20:16to speak at India's equivalent of West Point,
20:19and more invitations followed.
20:22Soon he became a sought-after preacher
20:24across all of India,
20:25and for the next 16 years,
20:28he proclaimed Christ with power and purpose.
20:30Finally, at the age of 88,
20:34he arrived in what was then Calcutta,
20:37stopped at the front desk for his room key,
20:39stepped onto the elevator,
20:41and was whisked right up to heaven.
20:45That's another reason why heaven is transformational,
20:47because it's never very far away.
20:51It's only a breath away when you get down right to it.
20:54Wherever life takes us,
20:57our eternal home is secure,
20:59a city built by God, prepared by Jesus,
21:02and we have to live with joyful anticipation
21:05as we await the final journey,
21:08and it should change our lives every day,
21:11knowing that we're going to be with Jesus forever and ever.
21:15One of my favorite sports stories
21:17is about Florence Chadwick,
21:20who was no stranger to long-distance swimming.
21:22In fact, she was the first woman
21:25to swim the English Channel in both directions.
21:28But one of her most memorable swims
21:31didn't end in victory,
21:32and at least not at first.
21:35It was 1952,
21:37and she set out to swim the 26 miles
21:39from Catalina Island to the California coastline.
21:43The water was cold, and the fog was thick,
21:46and after swimming for 15 hours,
21:49she finally gave up.
21:50She was physically exhausted and emotionally spent.
21:54Here's the part of the story that stung.
21:57When she got back in the boat,
21:59she was less than a mile from the shore.
22:03Later, she told reporters,
22:05I'm not excusing myself,
22:07but if I could have seen the shore,
22:09I might have made it.
22:11Two months later, she tried again.
22:13Same distance, same cold water,
22:14same heavy fog.
22:15But this time, she finished.
22:18What made the difference?
22:20She said,
22:21I kept a mental image of the shoreline
22:22in my mind the entire time.
22:25Florence Chadwick succeeded the second time,
22:27not because the fog was gone,
22:29but because she kept the shoreline in mind.
22:33Just thinking about her destination
22:35gave her the strength to keep going.
22:37And that's what heaven can do for us.
22:40When life gets foggy,
22:41when the days feel long
22:43and the struggle wears us down,
22:44just knowing what's ahead
22:46can give us the courage to keep swimming.
22:48Heaven is our shoreline.
22:50It reminds us that this isn't the end of the story.
22:53God has something beautiful waiting for us.
22:55Keep your eyes on the shore.
22:57And then live your life
23:00the way you know God would be pleased
23:03if he should intervene in your life at any moment.
23:07I hope that God will use this to challenge us.
23:11Maybe some of us need to take a little inventory.
23:14It's so easy in a church like ours
23:16to just settle down into the comfort
23:18of biblical messages every week,
23:20good worship songs,
23:22maybe a class to go to,
23:23social life that's meaningful.
23:25But what are we doing for God?
23:27What are we really doing
23:28with the gifts he's given us?
23:30And you know what the Bible tells us?
23:32Every single one of us has a gift.
23:34God gives every one of us a gift
23:36when we become his followers.
23:38And if you're willing to be used of God,
23:41I want you to use this challenge
23:43to do something about it.
23:46You say, what am I gonna do?
23:47Be diligent.
23:49Go after it.
23:51Exercise yourself.
23:53Do something about it.
23:54You know, we can live in the comfort
23:59of what we think we'd like to do
24:00for a long time without ever doing it.
24:04Don't let that strategy get you.
24:06Sit down this week and make a list
24:08of the things you think God might be able to use
24:11from what you know how to do
24:13and what he's equipped you to do
24:14and find a way by the grace of God to do it.
24:17Amen.
