00:00The MG5 has made significant progress in terms of vehicle safety, achieving a 3-star rating from the Independent Australasian Safety Authority, ANCAP.
00:22This step forward is the result of several key improvements implemented on vehicles produced from November 2024 onwards.
00:30When the MG5 was originally launched in August 2023, it received a 0-star safety rating, as significant shortcomings were identified in both crash protection and active safety features.
00:52The original version of the MG5 did not feature seatbelt pretensioners, lane departure warning systems or angle monitoring.
01:00The automatic emergency braking system was also underwhelming.
01:05It was clear that there was a lot of catching up to do here.
01:09Thankfully, MG has responded to the criticism.
01:12The revised version of the MG5 now features seatbelt pretensioners on both the front and outer rear seats, as well as a full range of collision avoidance technologies and seatbelt reminders for every seat.
01:25These included frontal crash tests, whiplash evaluations, pedestrian protection tests and practical tests for collision avoidance on the test track.
01:42These advances are particularly significant in the area of frontal impact, where the vehicle now offers good protection in key areas such as the driver's chest and neck.
02:10Despite these positive developments, there is still room for improvement.
02:16For example, a central airbag is still missing, which could offer additional protection, especially in the event of a side impact.
02:23The performance of the emergency lane departure warning system can also still be rated as only moderate.
02:31Although MG has made significant progress with the revised MG5, it still lags behind in terms of overall safety when compared directly with some competitors.
