00:00While many in the automotive industry have already written off the fuel cell, Honda is
00:05consistently pursuing a different path.
00:09Although research into hydrogen technology began at the same time as that into battery
00:13electric drives, the potential of hydrogen has not yet been fully realized.
00:19Nevertheless, some manufacturers, especially in Japan, remain committed to this alternative
00:24form of propulsion.
00:26Honda is one of the few automakers that not only conducts research but also offers a
00:30hydrogen-powered vehicle for the masses, the CR-VE FCV.
00:37This model is not a pure hydrogen car, but combines the advantages of the fuel cell with the option
00:43of additionally charging the battery via a plug-in connection.
00:47With the fuel cell module alone, the car has a range of around 386 km.
00:53The battery adds an additional 47 km.
00:57The system currently in use is called the Honda Fuel Module and was developed over the last
01:0210 years in collaboration with the American manufacturer GM.
01:08Honda has now further developed this technology and presented the next generation of fuel cell,
01:13the next generation Honda Fuel Module, in February 2025.
01:17This new version is scheduled to go into series production in 2027.
01:22The new module achieves an output of up to 150 kW with an efficiency of almost 60%.
01:31Honda states that manufacturing costs will be roughly half that of the current model.
01:38At the same time, the service life is expected to double and the power density per volume to triple.
01:44Furthermore, the new design is more flexible in its integration into various vehicle concepts.
01:50A preview of this technology was already provided at the ADCIT Expo 2024, when Honda first presented
01:57a converted Peterbilt truck with a fuel cell drive.
02:02Since then, the vehicle has been tested under real-world conditions, such as transporting
02:06cars and cargo trailers.
02:08The hydrogen truck is equipped with three fuel cell modules that deliver a combined output
02:13of 240 kW.
02:17This gives the truck a top speed of around 113 km per hour and a range of approximately 164 km.
02:27Honda is returning to this year's ACT Expo and, in addition to the hydrogen truck, is bringing
02:32the new fuel cell module and a scalable power generator.
02:38This generator is still based on the old system and can provide outputs between 250 kW and 3 MW.
02:45The aim of the trade fair appearance is to find potential customers for these technologies.
02:51Series production of the generator is already scheduled for 2026.
02:56That of the new fuel cell system will follow a year later.
02:59But Honda is thinking even further.
03:02In April, it was announced that the company is working on a closed-loop regenerative fuel
03:06cell system for space travel.
03:10This system could be used on the Moon in the long term.
03:14It is based on a water electrolysis process that uses solar energy from solar panels to
03:19produce oxygen and hydrogen.
03:24During the long lunar nights, the system could then use these gases to generate electricity
03:28for human and robotic activities.
03:32A first test on the International Space Station is imminent.
