AccuWeather's Anna Azallion breaks down the conditions that led to significant flash flooding in New York City just in time for the evening commute on Oct. 30.
Transcript
00:00Whether you are driving, you're taking the bus, you're trying to get on the subway,
00:04or you're heading to the airport, there's been some kind of impact all across the board. So
00:09where do things stand right now? Well, we're looking at a loop over the last hour, and I
00:13wanted to start out a little bit zoomed out to give you that better picture of, yes, there's
00:18a break in the rain right now. You didn't see active rainfall on that camera. You don't see
00:21it on radar, especially when I zoom in, but more rain is on the way, especially into the Philadelphia
00:28area. Another round of rain headed your way right now. Let's go ahead and zoom further
00:32into New York, though, since that's where our highest impact rainfall has been today. You're
00:37seeing just more images of the flash flooding on the right-hand side of your screen, and
00:40the bottom right video. The wind is a factor here as well, blowing the rain, and unfortunately
00:46that's going to get even worse as time goes on here. All right, so pausing the loop, give
00:50you an idea of where things stand right now. You can see there is more rain that's starting
00:55to pop up very scattered, but as things move east-northeast, more rain is going to be on
01:01the way. However, we're not talking about anything as high impact as what you just dealt with.
01:05For example, JFK reported an inch and a half of rain in the last three hours, well, as of
01:125 p.m., so three hours before that. What you're going to add on for the next couple of hours
01:18once the rain starts again, a tenth of an inch or two. Very minimal. However, I know any rainfall
01:23at this point is just adding insult to injury. Let's take a better look at those rainfall
01:27totals. What we've seen, I'll zoom in even just a little bit more here, especially since
01:33New York has been our focus for the worst of the impacts. Now, these are 24-hour rainfall
01:38totals. However, the majority of what you're seeing has been in just the last couple of
01:42hours. A lot of these reporting close to two inches of rain because they all got that band
01:47of the heaviest rainfall. I want to bring up our storm reports as well. I'll zoom out a little
01:51bit here because we're just continuing to get more and more of these storm reports showing
01:56up. We're talking about flooded roadways, getting to the bottoms of cars, and we do have that
02:01water rescue. This coming in 3.50 p.m. This was at Smith 9th Street in Brooklyn, FDNY carrying
02:08out that water rescue. So a reminder, even if it looks like it's not that much water you
02:12can get through it, just take six inches to cause a dangerous situation, and you just
02:16do not want to risk driving or even walking through a flooded roadway.
