00:00the problem the snow but also freezing fog at some points i want to backtrack talk about what's
00:04happened and then we'll talk about now and moving forward so our top snow totals just updated with
00:11the latest numbers here all more than 33 inches of snow still in wisconsin and michigan but a
00:18major snow event even for these locations at this point in the year but snow also getting all the
00:23way down to northern alabama northern georgia yeah this has been uh maybe not what you would
00:29expect from a mid-march storm but it's what we have not just snow though ice too the light pink
00:35you're seeing along the border with louisiana mississippi that's sleet not great but i'm really
00:40concerned about the freezing rain that just leads to big problems on roadways from northern michigan
00:45to far northern maine pretty much on the border with canada there this is when you get that thin
00:50glaze of ice over the road and it doesn't take much to create very very slick dangerous conditions in
00:57places like north carolina there you're starting to see that switch over for some of us the rain to
01:03snow rain snow mix that's when you can get a little bit of the ice and it's all coming with
01:07that cold
01:08front jeff has been talking about and it's dropping our temperatures down right behind the front it allows
01:13for the snow i mean and you can tell why when we see temperatures drop in the last 24 hours
01:18by 41 degrees
01:20in cleveland 44 in indianapolis oh talk about weather whiplash i know we just did this last week
01:26and we have more of a roller coaster ahead though it's not quite as dramatic as this for most of
01:31us
01:31the rest of the week let's talk about right now though here's the last three hours that switch over
01:36happening for somewhere like pittsburgh i mean it's solidly snow we've even seen heavy snow at points
01:40which further impacts visibility some of us in places like chicago milwaukee you're done with the snow
01:47or about done but anything that's on the ground with the wind still continuing that can still lead
01:52to blowing snow and lead to problems take a look at where we have our alerts out some of the
01:57government
01:57alerts around chicago those winter weather advisories starting to be trimmed the blizzard warnings though
02:03these are the big concern and not necessarily because they're in largely populated areas but just
02:07because it's where we could still see a blizzard occur then we have the winter storm watches and warnings
02:13the point is there is snow on the ground and it is either actively causing problems or it's going to
02:18cause problems the visibility just part of it all right let's take a look at the latest here buffalo
02:23half a mile of visibility pittsburgh still at a quarter mile charleston west virginia at half a mile
02:28here too uh portland has improved to two miles of visibility you were at a quarter to half a mile
02:33earlier bangor maine though three quarters of a mile of visibility now like i mentioned we've seen some
02:39freezing fog mixing in it sometimes too and that is a big concern but even just the snow heavy at
02:44times
02:45blowing it's how we get these numbers the wind that's the big issue beyond just the snow right
02:51jeff was showing you so many wind damage reports and while 36 miles an hour as far as our wind
02:56gusts
02:57right now in chicago isn't necessarily going to cause a lot of damage it can still blow some snow around
03:01so that's why i'm focusing on kind of that aspect of it the wind though going to continue through the
03:05evening and even into tomorrow to be better tomorrow but it's not going to be gone the snow
03:10is going to stick it already has started in places like pittsburgh when all said and done you're looking
03:14at one to three up to three to six that active weather local storm acts of 14 inches that's most
03:19likely in northern michigan michigan and the up of michigan but still mid-march and we have snow
03:24sticking to the ground causing problems at airports too
