00:00Overnight flights at Leeds Bradford Airport are back in the spotlight as airport bosses are looking into the possibility of amending perimeters,
00:08although they have stressed that the latest document they have submitted to Leeds City Council does not represent finalised proposals.
00:16The early stage plans are looking to replace existing restrictions.
00:20Leeds Bradford has been in a long-standing dispute with airport campaigners who say overnight flights are damaging the environment and disturbing people living nearby.
00:30The Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport, or GALBA, said an existing cap on night flights could be replaced with an annual noise quota count.
00:39The period officially classed as night time when restrictions apply could be reduced by 90 minutes to 11.30pm to 6am.
00:46LBA previously appealed against a council decision to restrict some aircraft from flying after 11pm.
00:53A public enquiry dismissed two of three planning appeals lodged by the airport in a decision published in July.
01:00The airport have said a possible Section 73 planning application would encourage the use of cleaner and quieter planes.
01:08The briefing note said that the restrictions are over 30 years old and are therefore significantly outdated,
01:13presenting no incentive for airlines to modernise their aircraft fleets.
01:17A spokesperson said amending conditions on the existing planning permission would bring it in line with Civil Aviation Authority guidelines.
01:25The council confirmed it has received the briefing note but said it was inappropriate to comment on a future planning application.
01:32They added that the council are aware of the issues which have been raised by GALBA
01:36and say that it should be noted that existing planning permits the airport to operate on a 24-hour basis with carefully defined limits.
