00:00An astonishing range of objects is now being stored at the Leeds Discovery Centre after they were discovered during work on the East Leeds Orbital Route,
00:08the biggest infrastructure project undertaken by Leeds City Council in 50 years.
00:13A team of experts from Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to carry out detailed archaeological surveys and digs along the route,
00:21meticulously searching for evidence of sites of historic significance and ensuring any important artefacts were collected and assessed.
00:30My name's Kat Baxter, I'm the Archaeology Curator for Leeds Museums and Galleries and I've got in front of me here some objects from an excavation in Leeds,
00:38the East Leeds Orbital Route, which is an excavation that covered a seven kilometre route of a modern road.
00:46Basically, some of the objects we have from this archive cover lots of different time periods of people living in Leeds.
00:53We have an early Neolithic leaf-shaped arrowhead, for example, and we also have a Bronze Age axe head,
01:01a medieval buckle, some wonderful nutcrackers from the 1700s and also a bit of clay pipe from the 1800s
01:13with a lovely image of Britannia on the bull.
01:17So we receive archaeological archives from excavations that take place within Leeds Metropolitan District
01:22and it's a really important record of the heritage of Leeds and we look after it here at Leeds Discovery Centre.
