00:00Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro announced the precautionary suspension of the energy and gas agreement signed with Trinidad and Tobago,
00:18after the nation's prime minister reported joint military drills with the U.S., aimed at destabilizing the Caribbean.
00:25Authorities in Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic ordered the immediate evacuation of thousands of people ahead of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.
00:41In Sudan, over 26,000 citizens have left the town of Al-Fashir due to increasing violence, according to reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
00:55Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Sofia Fernández from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:04Venezuela denounced the government of Trinidad and Tobago for orchestrating a military provocation plan aimed at destabilizing the Caribbean, in alliance with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
01:15This strategy, as outlined in the executive report, appears to be a deliberate attempt to create a justification for military aggression against Venezuela.
01:24This would represent a violent violation of the Caribbean people's sovereignty and peace.
01:29In this context, the Venezuelan authorities urged the international community to maintain a firm stance against the interventionist actions of the United States against the countries of the region,
01:39which, under the excuse of combating drug trafficking, have attacked fishing boats from various Caribbean countries.
01:46The denunciation emphasizes Venezuela's willingness to defend its territorial integrity and its right to self-determination, in the face of a new U.S. interventionist maneuver.
01:56In this sense, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced a precautionary suspension of the Energy and Gas Agreement signed with Trinidad and Tobago, and called it a rest to regional security.
02:12The announcement was made during the inauguration of the inauguration of San Carlos Fortress in Caracas, where President Maduro said his decision was in response to the oil company PDVSA.
02:26The Venezuelan President said he will submit the decision to the Council of State, the Supreme Court of Justice, and the National Assembly for recommendations to take more in-depth measures on the decision very soon.
02:38President Maduro also said the suspension of the agreement was only an alternative left before Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister's decision to turn her country into a U.S. aircraft carrier against Venezuela and South America.
02:51Faced with the threat from the Prime Minister to turn Trinidad and Tobago into the aircraft carrier of the U.S. Empire against Venezuela and South America, there is only one alternative.
03:10I have read this report.
03:17I have approved the precautionary measure of immediate suspension of all effects of the Energy Agreement and all agreements related to this matter.
03:27It is a precautionary measure to which I have authority as President and I have approved and signed it. Everything is suspended.
03:42And I am submitting the constitutional question to the Council of State, the Supreme Court of Justice, and the National Assembly to receive recommendations as head of state and take structural action very soon in this matter.
03:56In other news, the Mexican government announced an extension of the deadline for the implementation of tariffs on Mexican exports imposed by the United States.
04:09The extension was agreed during a telephone conversation between President Claudia Sheinbaum and her U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, and was announced by Sheinbaum during her morning-day press conference on Monday.
04:20The Mexican head of state explained that both governments had set a three-month deadline, ending November 1, to resolve the tariff issues, so they conversed to extend the dialogue for a few more weeks, during which they will discuss trade issues and seal negotiations on the 54 pending non-tariff barriers, which, according to the Mexican president, are already quite advanced.
04:43Also in Mexico, the government provided economic support for approximately $1,000 to more than 70,000 head of households as part of the response strategy following the heavy rainfall caused by tropical disturbance.
05:03During the regular meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum, Warfare Secretary Adriana Montiel reported on the progress of the census to support those affected, which covered 103,245 houses in 119 municipalities in the affected areas.
05:18The extraordinary rains, which were recorded between October 7 and 11, severely impacted the state of Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo, Querétaro, and San Luis de Potosí.
05:28In addition to the 80 confirmed deaths, authorities are still searching for 19 people reported missing.
05:41And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Dallas for English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
05:48We'll be right back, stay with us!
05:58Welcome back to From the South.
06:07The Caribbean is on alert due to the Hurricane Melissa, which has now reached Category 5.
06:13The authorities in Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic order the immediate evacuation of thousands of people to safe locations in anticipation of heavy rains, flooding and the risks of storm surges and landslides.
06:25As it approaches Jamaica, the weather system is recording winds of up to 260 km per hour.
06:32As a precautionary measure, the Jamaican government set up 881 shelters, closed all airports and evacuated the capital, Kingston, and other cities.
06:42For its part, the Cuban government will evacuate more than 250,000 people and has declared maximum alert in four provinces of the island.
06:50Hurricane Melissa has killed three people in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic so far.
06:55Both countries have ordered the evacuation of nearly half a million people.
06:59As Category 5, Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaican territory, communications officers for Jamaica Red Cross, Esther Pinnock, offer statements about the meteorological situation in the country before the imminent impact of Hurricane Melissa.
07:21We are experiencing currently intermittent rainfall. It's overcast and it's looking quite eerie on the outside.
07:31And every once in a while we have some gusty winds. But the system is creeping in and there are areas to the southeast of the island that have already experienced fallen trees.
07:44fallen trees and, you know, a few incidents of land slippage.
07:49This is a cause for concern because of the nature, the slow nature of Melissa.
07:55I mean, we are waiting and some persons are not experiencing anything and, of course, that is intensifying the anxiety.
08:05But not only is she the most intense that may cross the island, but she's slow and she's wide.
08:15So all areas of the island are expected to feel some impact.
08:20Meanwhile, the eastern part of Cuba has entered a hurricane alarm phase after Storm Melissa turned into Category 5 hurricane.
08:28The Cuban Civil Defense General Staff reported on the measures applied to the eastern provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Olguín, Granma, Las Tunas and Camagüey.
08:37On the other hand, Ciego de Ávila and Santi Espíritus are in the cyclone alert phase after the imminent impact on the country of this tropical phenomenon in the next hours.
08:46In this sense, the Cuban authorities urge the population to stay informed about the advances and development of the hurricane and to comply with the instructions given by official social networks and national media.
08:58The hurricane is expected to heat Cuban soil between Tuesday and Wednesday.
09:10For his part, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez called authorities to carry that immediate people evacuation in the most vulnerable places, as well as protect their properties ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Melissa at the eastern part of the country.
09:23As stated here by some of the presidents of the defense councils, the priority is the protection of the population, and that protection is guaranteed if there is an adequate evacuation.
09:38All flooded zones, low areas from dams, micro dams, all of these must be protected, and that must be done in a timely manner.
09:47It is very important to protect the population, but also to protect the property of the population.
09:53We have to find places to safeguard mattresses, appliances, and people's property. We must act quick and do it.
10:01In other news, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Turquía on Monday. Press reports indicated that some buildings were damaged, but no casualties have been reported so far.
10:15The earthquake had its epicenter in the city of Sindirgi, in the province of Velikesir, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, AFAD.
10:24It occurred at 10.48 pm local time, at a depth of 5.99 km. It was felt in Istanbul and in nearby provinces of Bursa, Manirsa, and Izmir.
10:35Sindirgi was also affected by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in August this year, that left one person dead and dozens injured.
10:43Since then, the region around Vali Sekesir has been affected by minor tremors.
10:49Turquía is located on major geological faults, and earthquakes are frequent.
11:01Moving on to Brazil.
11:02The defense team for former president Jair Bolsonaro filed an appeal on Monday against the 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 elections.
11:12Found guilty in September of attempting to prevent the inauguration of President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro seeks to correct ambiguities, omissions, contradictions, and oversaturities in the Supreme Court's decision.
11:25Bolsonaro was convicted of five crimes.
11:27Attemptive coup d'etat, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, membership in a criminal organization, damage to public property, and damage to protected property.
11:38In the sentence, Judge Moraes emphasized that Bolsonaro sought the perpetuation of his political group in power, regardless of democratic and republican norms.

13:59Let's recall that the Red Cross is acting as a neutral intermediary to facilitate the recovery process inside areas of the Palestinian enclave, still under Israeli control.
14:09For its part, under the ceasefire agreement reached on October 10, the Tel Aviv regime agreed to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each national return, while Gazans have denounced many of the corpses received, as unrecognizable and displaying signs of torture and mutilation.

14:47Villa, 92 years old and in power since 1982, leads the People's Democratic Movement of Cameroon.
