00:32These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow News.
00:38Hello everyone, I'm Cara Rucker, in today for Craig Negrelli.
00:43President Trump is promising a clean-up and crackdown in the nation's capital.
00:48This morning, he'll hold a news conference regarding crime in Washington, D.C.
00:52In a string of Truth Social posts Sunday, the president called for removing homeless people immediately and moving them far from the city.
01:02Promising jail time for criminals and no more Mr. Nice Guy.
01:07This comes after he ordered hundreds more federal agents into D.C. over the weekend.
01:12Following the assault of a former Doge staffer during an attempted carjacking.
01:16Trump is even floating the idea of taking federal control of the city.
01:21Something that is possible to do, but something some legal experts say would be difficult without Congress.
01:28Washington, D.C. has one of the highest homicide rates among major cities in the U.S., the fourth highest in 2024.
01:36But statistics also show that violent crime is down 26 percent so far this year compared to last.
01:43And D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back this weekend on Trump's portrayal of the city.
01:49The priority is to show for us in an American city.
01:53We know he can do that here.
01:55But it won't be because there's a spike in crime.
01:59The president's news conference is set for 10 o'clock this morning from the White House.
02:03We'll keep an eye on it for new developments.
02:05A deadly strike in Gaza has killed four Al Jazeera journalists, including one of the network's most prominent voices, as Israel prepares to expand its offensive.
02:17Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, who spent nearly two years covering the war from inside Gaza, was targeted by Israeli forces while sheltering with other journalists near Al-Shifa Hospital.
02:30The Israeli military accuses him of leading a Hamas cell, allegations he had denied.
02:37Three other journalists were also killed.
02:39The network calls it a, quote, desperate attempt to silence voices ahead of Israel's expected ground push.
02:46That push was outlined Sunday by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who says Israel will expand operations beyond Gaza City into these central camps sheltering hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
03:01The move has drawn some international condemnation and fresh criticism from hostage families fearing for their loved ones.
03:08Contrary to false claims, this is the best way to end the war and the best way to end it speedily.
03:16We will do so by first enabling the civilian population to safely leave the combat areas to designated safe zones.
03:24In these safe zones, they'll be given ample food, water and medical care, as we've done before.
03:30Netanyahu says he spoke Sunday with President Trump, thanking him for his steadfast support, as the U.N. Security Council held an emergency session where the U.S. defended Israel, but other nations warned the plan will only bring more bloodshed.
03:46The war is now in its 22nd month, with more than 60,000 Palestinians killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry run by Hamas.
03:55And Hamas is still believed to have thousands of fighters.
04:00We're learning more about the man police say opened fire Friday at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campus, killing a police officer.
04:09Investigators identify him as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, who, according to law enforcement, claimed the COVID-19 vaccine made him sick and depressed.
04:19They haven't said if that was his motive, and the investigation continues.
04:24Police say White tried to get into CDC headquarters in Atlanta, but was stopped by guards.
04:30Minutes later, he drove to a pharmacy across the street and started shooting.
04:35It's still unclear if White died by suicide or was shot by officers.
04:39The officer killed, 33-year-old David Rose, was a Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan and just graduated from the police academy in March.
04:51Texas Governor Greg Abbott is turning up the pressure on Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to block his redistricting plan, threatening to keep them out for years.
05:02Abbott says if they step foot back in Texas, they'll be arrested and hauled to the Capitol, and he'll keep calling special sessions until Republicans get their way.
05:13Here he is on Fox News Sunday.
05:14This could literally last years, because in Texas, I'm authorized to call a special session every 30 days.
05:21It lasts 30 days.
05:22And as soon as this one is over, I'm going to call another one, then another one, then another one, then another one.
05:28If they show back up in the state of Texas, they will be arrested and taken to the Capitol.
05:33If they want to evade that arrest, they're going to have to stay outside of the state of Texas for literally years.
05:38The Democrats have been holed up in blue states like Illinois and Massachusetts, trying to run out the clock on Abbott's plan to redraw congressional maps in Republicans' favor.
05:50New York's governor, Kathy Hochul, ready to push back in her state, called Abbott's stance hypocritical.
05:56I want to call out the hypocrisy of the Republicans who are now whining about the fact that we're doing something in New York.
06:02Where was the outrage when Donald Trump told Texas to just go find, just go find five seats for him?
06:10Come on.
06:11People aren't going to buy this.
06:13At stake is control of the U.S. House in 2026.
06:17More than 10 million Midwest residents are under flood alerts this morning as heavy rains trigger record flooding in Wisconsin and washes out the final day of the state fair.
06:28In Wisconsin, so much rain fell between Saturday and Sunday, it could set a new state record.
06:35The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District reports more than 14 inches fell in just a 24-hour period.
06:43Mayor Cavalier Chevy Johnson says thousands in the city have been impacted.
06:48Meanwhile, most of southern Kansas, part of western Missouri, and northern Oklahoma are under a level 3 of 4 risk of flooding rain this morning.
06:57That's according to the Weather Prediction Center.
07:00A level 2 of 4 risk covers much of the Midwest, from southern Wisconsin to eastern Colorado.
07:07The system is the same one that brought 80-mile-per-hour wind gusts to Nebraska Saturday,
07:13killing one person and seriously injuring another when a tree fell on a car at Two Rivers State Park.
07:20Finally this morning, oh, Bowie.
07:24A promotional photo shoot for the Seattle Kraken hockey team turned into a wild close call
07:30when one of its players and the team mascot came face-to-face with a bear.
07:35The mascot, a sea troll named Bowie, and center John Hayden were fly-fishing Alaska's Katmai National Park
07:43when a brown bear suddenly charged them.
07:46On his ex-page, Bowie said, this is a good reminder to always respect wildlife in their natural habitat.
07:54I want to blame it on Bowie.
07:55They were pretty interested in his whole look, so we got out of it okay, but it was a close call.
08:04That last little sprint I was worried.
08:08All blame aside, it's not unusual to spot brown bears in the Brooks River at Katmai.
08:14The park is home to the beloved annual Fat Bear Week contest.
