00:39Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:41National Guard troops armed and in uniform now walking the streets of the nation's capital.
00:47President Trump says it's about crime.
00:49Critics call it a power play.
00:51On Monday, the president announced he's activating 800 Guard members and temporarily taking control of D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department.
01:00Army officials say the Guard will assist law enforcement with 100 to 200 troops on duty at any given time.
01:07Their role? Administrative support, logistics, and a visible presence.
01:12Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the deployment will look much like the National Guard in Los Angeles.
01:18When troops were sent in during protests over the Trump administration's immigration policies.
01:23The president has activated the National Guard under Title 32, which means they do have arrest powers.
01:29But defense officials say for now, the mission is strictly to support police.
01:34The White House says it has now settled on a location for Friday's historic Trump-Putin summit.
01:40Anchorage, Alaska.
01:41After days of scrambling and running into peak tourist season, officials decided the only spot that would work is Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
01:49They hoped to avoid the optics of hosting Russia's leader on a U.S. military base, but it was the only option that met security and logistics needs, according to CNN.
02:00Before he sits down with Putin, President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance will hold a virtual meeting today with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European allies.
02:09That's according to ABC News.
02:11Zelensky says he's heard signals Russia may be open to a ceasefire, but warned there's no sign Putin is preparing for peace.
02:19It will be the first meeting between President Trump and Vladimir Putin in six years.
02:24The White House is calling it a listening session.
02:27The president says he wants to look the Russian leader in the eye and size him up.
02:31The summit comes amid high stakes and high scrutiny over the two men's past one-on-one meetings.
02:37Call it a reverse deportation.
02:40Mexico has sent more than two dozen high-ranking drug kingpins to the United States to face justice.
02:46CNN reports they were flown to the U.S. on Tuesday.
02:49Part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal drugs at the border.
02:53Among them, a figure tied to the Jalisco New Generation cartel and a man accused in a 2008 killing of a Los Angeles sheriff's jeopardy.
03:01The only condition for the transfer, they cannot face the death penalty in the United States.
03:07Back in February, Mexico sent nearly 30 other cartel figures wanted for drug smuggling, murder, and other crimes.
03:14The latest moves are believed to be linked to trade talks, with President Trump agreeing to pause a 30 percent tariff on Mexico while negotiations continue.
03:22This morning, the White House is taking a hard look at the Smithsonian.
03:27A new letter obtained by CBS News is ordering an internal review of some of the nation's most popular museums,
03:34aimed at, quote, celebrating American exceptionalism and removing what the president calls divisive language.
03:41The first round targets eight museums, including the African-American History Museum, Air and Space, and the National Portrait Gallery.
03:49Museums have 30 days to hand over information and 120 days to start making, quote, content corrections.
03:56The Smithsonian says it's reviewing the letter and remains committed to factual, accurate history.
04:02The review stems from a March executive order directing Vice President J.D. Vance, a Smithsonian regent, to root out what the White House calls improper ideology.
04:13Texas House Democrats say they've accomplished what they set out to do, kill the first special session and bring national attention to mid-decade redistricting.
04:23Multiple sources tell ABC News they're now preparing to head back to Texas, possibly as early as this weekend.
04:29But they warn plans could change if Republicans go back on their word about ending the session on Friday.
04:35Governor Greg Abbott says if Democrats do not return by then, he'll call another special session immediately with the same redistricting plan and possibly more.
04:45Democrats call the session corrupt.
04:47Republicans say they'll keep calling sessions until the map passes.
04:52Finally this morning, Space Force has liftoff.
04:55United Launch Alliance sent two military satellites into orbit.
05:01Five, four, three, we have ignition, one, and liftoff.
05:11Wow, that is cool. Great video.
05:13ULA's Vulcan rocket took off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in Florida just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.
05:19Listen to this.
05:20It's 202 feet tall, 1.74 million pounds, and all business.
05:25It's ULA's most powerful ride yet, hauling the U.S. military's first experimental navigation satellite in 50 years.
05:34Think test drive for next-gen tech, only at 17,000 miles per hour.
05:39And a big box checked for ULA.
05:42Vulcan is now Space Force certified to carry the pricey stuff.
05:45National security payloads, spy sats, the whole classified carry-on.
05:50Bottom line, new rocket, new badge, same old gravity, brushed off.
05:56It actually sounds like I'm reading the Star Trek 2025 owner's manual, right?
06:01Okay, beam me up, director.
06:03Here's what we're tracking today.
06:04Vice President J.D. Vance is in the U.K.
06:07visiting Royal Air Force Fairford, where American troops are stationed.
06:10He's expected to give remarks later this morning.
06:12In Washington, at 11.15, President Trump will visit the Kennedy Center, where he says this year's Kennedy Center honorees will be announced.
06:21In Baltimore, around noon, a judge will hear arguments in the administration's lawsuit against all 15 federal judges in Maryland.
06:29At issue, a court order blocking the immediate deportation of migrants challenging their removal.
06:34And at 3 o'clock, the president will sign a series of executive orders, though the White House has not said what they will cover.
06:40Wake up informed, maybe even impress your coworkers.
