00:00DBJ is the radio analyst for the Hurricanes football broadcast here on 104.3 FM WQAM.
00:07Our coverage tomorrow night starts at 3 p.m. with Hurricanes game day.
00:12Means we will be on only for an hour tomorrow, 2 till 3.
00:15And then Hurricanes pregame show begins at 3.
00:19And then Joe Zagacki and DBJ will bring you the call of the game,
00:23which kicks off at 7 p.m. from Hard Rock Stadium.
00:27Hello, DBJ.
00:28How are you?
00:30I've missed you, man.
00:31It's been a couple weeks.
00:35Yeah, we miss you during the bye weeks.
00:38It's always a little bit sad when you're not around on a Thursday.
00:41So Canes are two touchdown favorites, essentially, 13.5, I think,
00:46over an unranked Louisville team.
00:49Friday night, prime time.
00:50What, if anything, makes you nervous about tomorrow night?
00:54Well, the facts are that this Louisville team over the last two years and a half has a better record than the University of Miami.
01:05Factual.
01:06This Louisville team beat Miami in 23, and we beat them in 24.
01:14So they've been very evenly matched.
01:18And, you know, this is conference football.
01:21Then what happens in conference football is they all seem to be very close games.
01:26And no matter who you talk to, Hawk, about Louisville, their head coach calls the plays, and everybody in the country says the same thing,
01:36that he's one of the best play callers in America.
01:40Could be that he played for Coach Schnellenberger.
01:42That might have had something to do with it.
01:43But the guy is a phenomenal play caller and creates issues.
01:48So I think that in college, and also when you look at them, they're an overtime field goal away from this being two 5-0 teams kicking off tomorrow night.
02:02So I see a lot of positive on their side.
02:04I think that they've got some – I think that they are not where they want to be, but they've had an off week.
02:10I think their running backs are going to be the healthiest that they've been this season.
02:14And I think that that's what has held them back from really being undefeated is their running game.
02:21And, DBJ, usually after bye weeks, you know, you always have that question of the self-scout.
02:25What were they trying to address in this, you know, extra time off?
02:29Bro, actually, only thing I think of is just he's just walking in and yelling, stay healthy.
02:34Because I think if they stay healthy, they're in the national championship game.
02:37I don't see many weaknesses.
02:38If they did work on something, a little extra during these extra time off, what did they work on?
02:45You know, Channing, what Coach Cristobal does is he is really what football is.
02:51He is very, very, very routine.
02:54And his Monday is the same every Monday.
02:57His Tuesday is the same.
02:59His Wednesday is the same.
03:00His Thursday is the same.
03:01And I think what they immediately did in the bye week is attack the mistakes.
03:06And what were the mistakes that have come out of the Florida State game?
03:08The mistakes were penalties.
03:10I'm positive that they worked on that.
03:13I'm positive that they discussed it.
03:15They asked them why it happened, whether it was pre-snap or post-snap.
03:19And that was one of the big focal points.
03:22The other thing is in the off week is to get well.
03:24You know, the guys that, I will tell you, when we were loading the buses after the Florida State game, there was not much left in the tank from anybody that was a Miami Hurricane.
03:36That group of players were exhausted.
03:42And I mean, they really played extremely hard, and you had to.
03:45And, you know, the other thing is to focus on the fourth quarter.
03:49And the fourth quarter being what?
03:51That it's not the type of scoring that they've had in the first three quarters.
03:55And Coach Cristobal realizes that if Miami is going to continue down this path of winning the ACC and getting into the postseason, you've got to get better every single week.
04:07So it's a big list of things, but I think some of those things that I mentioned are the main topic.
04:12Is it true that Ruben Bain jogged home from Tallahassee?
04:15Is it true what?
04:18Ruben Bain jogged home.
04:21You said everybody was tired.
04:23Ruben Bain doesn't get tired, DBJ.
04:26Well, I'm telling you this.
04:28I had him in a postgame locker room, and I was worried I was going to have to resuscitate him.
04:35He gave every single ounce.
04:40And you're right.
04:41He's never, ever tired.
04:43I, he was, he was worn out now.
04:46He, he had, he put forth all the effort that he could.
04:51And, and he showed, cause he, listen, he was chasing that quarterback around all night.
04:55That guy wasn't, wasn't a statue of liberty back there.
04:58He was a hard to catch.
04:59Well, he's probably going to be tired after the Louisville game, because I was reading DBJ, eighth worst power four conference up front for Louisville, protecting the quarterback, their pass rush, or excuse me, their offensive line just hasn't been able to do it well this year.
05:14So I, I'm guessing we're expecting a lot, a lot of pressure, not just from Ruben Bain, but from Mesidor and the rest of the, the big guys up front from the Canes.
05:24Yes.
05:26Yes.
05:26And trust me, the quarterback for Louisville is a lot easier to catch than the quarterback from Florida state.
05:34It's not, it's not even close.
05:35So if Miami can generate a type of pass rush that they have all season long, I think they'll make it, uh, difficult on the Louisville quarterback.
05:45So everybody knows Don Bailey jr.
05:47His father, Don Bailey senior is, uh, famous in South Florida for being on the, uh, the Don Bailey.
05:55Uh, it was, it was Don Bailey carpets back then, right?
05:58It's Don Bailey flooring.
05:59Now was it Don Bailey carpets back then?
06:02And it's, and it's at its beginning.
06:05Yes, it was Don Bailey carpets and it has, it has morphed into Don Bailey flooring as styles and tastes have changed.
06:13But the style that it is associated with is your dad, uh, laying on the carpet nude on billboards, uh, back in the seventies and eighties.
06:26And he's a, he's a legend.
06:27It's a, it's a legendary company.
06:30It's a legendary billboard and your dad is turning 92 Tuesday.
06:36Is that what you told me?
06:38That's correct.
06:39Can you believe it?
06:39How about that?
06:40How's he doing at 92?
06:41How's he doing?
06:43Still laying around naked.
06:45He's still doing it.
06:48He's doing great, man.
06:50I mean, you know, listen, he's, he comes around once a week or so.
06:54And, uh, he's as good as he can be that's as good as any 92 year old can be when he walks into the old Don Bailey flooring place.
07:03Is he still the King?
07:05Everybody's very respectful.
07:07Yes.
07:07Because he comes in to sign check.
07:09So that's one way to keep everybody in line.
07:12You know what I mean?
07:13Good way to get respect.
07:14Well, we're going to give, uh, we're going to give you a couple of lines to work into tomorrow night's broadcast here.
07:19And one of them is in honor of your dad's birthday, but I'll save that till last.
07:24Okay.
07:25So we're going to give you three lines, three lines, and we'll, we'll cap it off with, uh, with one from your dad's era from the fifties.
07:33All right.
07:34First one that we want to give you.
07:37Have you ever heard of the band Papa Roach?
07:41Papa Roach?
07:42No, I've never heard of that.
07:43I have a feeling you're going to have heard of the beginning of this song.
07:47I happened to be at a Panthers game.
07:49They played last resort.
07:50And I said to myself, this is a perfect line for DBJ.
07:54And I texted Solana immediately.
07:57And so we're giving it to you here.
07:59This is a Papa Roach.
08:00First couple of lines from last resort.
08:03Cut my life into pieces.
08:06This is my last resort.
08:08Bang.
08:09And then it goes into it.
08:10Cut my life into pieces.
08:12This is my last resort.
08:14That's that is a great line for me to work into a game.
08:18I'll take a suggestion on when you would like me to work it in a, a, a scenario, but I like that line, man.
08:24That's a good scenario there.
08:27Oh, late game.
08:30Had last resort.
08:31Late game.
08:32Hmm.
08:33Jimmy's holding up the floor.
08:34Maybe, maybe the beginning of the fourth quarter.
08:37Sure.
08:38Why not?
08:38That works.
08:39Play the line one more time for him, Jimmy.
08:41So he can really get the feel for it here.
08:43The way that Papa Roach does it.
08:45Cut my life into pieces.
08:48This is my last resort.
08:51That'll be a good one.
08:52I like that one.
08:53That's going to be a great one.
08:54That's a great one.
08:55I like that one.
08:56Then the other day we were playing the song on this show.
09:00Dr.
09:01Dre.
09:02Y'all know me.
09:03Still the same OG.
09:04You know that song.
09:05Well, play the line for him that we pulled.
09:09Y'all know me.
09:10Still the same OG.
09:11But I've been low key.
09:13I think that's from an Eminem song, right?
09:15Am I correct?
09:15Well, it's, it's Dr. Dre and Eminem.
09:17Forgot about Dre.
09:18So the line is, y'all know me.
09:21I don't think it was Dr. J.
09:23Did you say Dr. J?
09:25No, I said Dr. Dre.
09:26All right.
09:27Just checking.
09:28I thought you said Dr. J.
09:30Julius.
09:32He said Dr. J.
09:33Oh, God.
09:35The line there is, y'all know me.
09:37Still the same OG.
09:39But I've been low key.
09:42I like that too.
09:43That's a good line.
09:44That could be after a big touchdown catch.
09:47Yep.
09:47Especially if somebody hasn't done something for a while.
09:51You go, listen, y'all know me.
09:52Still same OG.
09:54I've been low key.
09:57All our guys have been jumping off.
09:58Even when I'm tight in.
09:59I know.
10:00That's the thing.
10:00It's like there's nobody that's been low key.
10:02But that'll be good.
10:03I was thinking at the start of the broadcast when Josie brings you in,
10:08as soon as he says your name.
10:10Oh, that's the spot.
10:13That's the spot.
10:15And I'm here with DBJ.
10:17Y'all know me.
10:17Still same OG, but I've been low key.
10:20Because you've been off two of the last three weeks, DBJ.
10:24I mean, you guys have been kind of staying low key.
10:26But still the same OG.
10:28That's the spot.
10:29Okay.
10:31Now listen.
10:35First of all, I can't do that to Joe.
10:37I mean, he's very, he's highly focused, especially in the beginning of the game.
10:42And he's worried about getting in the spots.
10:45He's worried about the lineup.
10:46He's worried about everything.
10:49No, I, I, I mean, I, I think it's a great idea.
10:52I just, I just, I might, you know what?
10:56I still might do it.
10:57Even if all those things.
10:58You're saying essentially that would be like running a flea flicker on the first play of the game.
11:02It's just.
11:04Absolutely.
11:05That's exactly what that would be.
11:07I, I'd have to get two sign-offs.
11:09I'd have to get Vic and his approval on that.
11:12Because if I threw him off with that, it'd ruin him for the whole day.
11:15I think it would be great though.
11:16Like Crowder said, like, cause Josie's going to bring you into the broadcast and then you just kind of casually, you know, here's my broadcast partner, Don Bailey Jr.
11:25Y'all know me, still the same OG, but I'm in low key.
11:28I mean, just say it like it's not, that would be great, man.
11:35Well, you know, we do come back after each quarter also.
11:39So there, there's a lot.
11:41Think about it.
11:42And then now finally, because your dad is turning 92, you texted me, you said, Hey, how about something from the fifties?
11:48I pulled a little ditty from little Anthony and the Imperials, a little tears on my pillow.
11:54Fire this off, Jimmy.
11:56Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you.
12:15You could come up with some Elvis or a little something more manly.
12:21Something bad happens.
12:23Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you.
12:36You know what?
12:37I can get Joe to join me in the you.
12:40It'll be great.
12:41We gave you three good ones this week.
12:43So I think you'll have no problem working all of these in.
12:45And by the way, Mike Cugno from CBS four just texted me with a great suggestion.
12:50How about you drop the OG line when they toss it to you with Mario Cristobal at, uh, at the end of the game?
12:59Oh yeah, I can, I can see you.
13:03I can see that happening.
13:05I can see coach Cristobal looking at me like really, bro.
13:11That would be great.
13:12Cause Joe sends it down.
13:13All right.
13:13DBJ is downstairs with, uh, coach Cristobal right now.
13:16Uh, take it away, DBJ.
13:18And you say, thanks, Joe.
13:20I've got coach next to me.
13:21And of course, y'all know me still same OG, but I've been low key.
13:24Coach, tell us a little bit about what you saw up there tonight.
13:30I can tell you what I see in front of me is a lunatic.
13:35That's a great, great idea by Cugno.
13:39Put it in the arsenal, DBJ.
13:40Great idea.
13:42Great idea.
13:45Tell Cugno to use that and come to Mario's press conference and use that as a previous press conference.
13:50You'll hear him tomorrow on this radio station.
13:53And pregame begins at 3 p.m.
13:55Game starts at 7 p.m.
13:57You'll hear it all here on 104.3 FM WQAM.
14:00Tell your dad happy birthday on behalf of all of us, DBJ.
