00:00I'm Garrett and in this series I'm exploring Italy for 10 days with my wife Lauren.
00:05After a great start to our trip in Venice, we hopped on a train and made our way down
00:09to Florence. We spent our first evening in Florence exploring the San Lorenzo Market
00:14and the Central Market where we tasted a whole bunch of local Florentine cuisine
00:19which pretty much catches you up to this morning.
00:21I'm trying to afford not to spill or drop Gary's coffee.
00:28Happy birthday!
00:32That's my birthday boy!
00:34Cheers!
00:38I love this little balcony for morning coffee.
00:52Our first stop of the day is the Uffizi Gallery.
00:54So apparently the Medici family back in like the 15th century of Florence, they were really
01:00wealthy and they loved art but not just for the bible or for worship kings and things like that.
01:06They just liked art. There's a lot of art in this one museum.
01:10I was waiting in the ticket line and my eyes were getting so bad.
01:13Lauren was waving me on but all I saw was some short lady waving.
01:16I couldn't see if it was her or not so I was like I'm not gonna move because if I get out
01:19of this line she gonna kill me.
01:20He's not wrong. I probably would've.
01:22But Lauren found our tickets so we're about to walk into the museum which we're really excited
01:26about so let's go check out some cool art.
01:28So you can pre-book your tickets online but you still have to pick them up here.
01:32So there's a door all the way at the end of this gallery where you go pick up your tickets
01:36and then you can enter into that door where no one's at. So we're ready to go.
01:44So we just left the Uffizi pool.
01:46We just left the Uffizi museum and it was it was awesome.
01:51My favorite part was just seeing how well the paintings progressed in just a short amount of
01:56time like 50 to 100 years. Like the first rooms you walk in everything is just like golden altar
02:03pieces. Yeah and then you walk in a few other rooms and you get to where Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo
02:09started painting and everything was just 3D and beautiful. It was it was out of this world.
02:15We listened to Rick Steves podcast to give us some cool learning material on the paintings
02:20and it was about what an hour a little less. We did it times two speed.
02:24So we spent about 45 minutes in there. We definitely didn't hit everything but we have
02:29a jam-packed day today. So we got to keep moving but this guy gets a birthday smoothie bowl.
02:36So that's where we're headed next.
02:40High school students had a class project and their objective was to explain this the history of
02:45this building to us. So we were like yeah sure go ahead. But it had to be an Italian for some reason.
02:51It's pretty hilarious because we had no idea of one word they said.
03:01My legs are straddling the table.
03:03Avocado toast on a sweet potato.
03:12That was exactly what I needed that smoothie bowl was so creamy and sweet with the bananas and then the
03:18oranges added a nice little citrus flavor to it. It was like the perfect morning wake up.
03:23Of course hanging out with my beautiful wife and a cup of coffee was great.
03:27But now we are headed to the academia to see the statue of David.
03:35So we walked by the Duomo on the way to the academia museum and we thought about just popping
03:40in there real quick. We're like hey might as well because we really want to see it. The queue was
03:44insanely long so we don't have time to wait at this moment. So we're still headed to the academia and
03:50then we're going to try and hit the Duomo afterwards. But that line was just like wow. It was crazy.
03:56It just was opening and the line was already wrapped all the way around the building.
04:01The line for everyone that didn't reserve their tickets ahead of time to the academia museum is
04:05saying we reserve their tickets ahead of time. Only one in line.
04:16All right we just completed the academia gallery. We saw David from every angle. It was really cool.
04:23As usual we had our main man Rick Steves talking into our ear while we were in there. We had some
04:28really cool insights. I think we spent like 40 minutes in there. You know taking it all in. I think one of my
04:34favorite things was when they talked about the different ways that you can see David's expression
04:38depending on where you're standing. So if you're looking at him straight on he looks very confident
04:42like ready to take on Goliath. And then when you look at him from you know kind of the clock angle
04:47he looks more concerned, a little more apprehensive about what he's about to take on. There's some debate
04:52of whether or not it's supposed to be him before or after he slays to Goliath. But Rick says it before and I
04:59can't argue with Rick. And the level of detail and the sculpting is unbelievable. I bet you
05:05Michelangelo was a beast back in the day. She won't be. And now we're headed towards the Duomo. There's
05:09no reservations so we're going to have to go wait in line. We'll see how long it is but we're really
05:14excited to see it and we'd be pretty upset if we didn't get to see it while we're here.
05:17We've officially completed the Yufusi, the Academia Gallery as well as the Duomo all before noon
05:39and we are hungry. So we're going to go get some sandwiches and we're going to take you along.
05:47This sandwich shop has three lines. That's how popular it is. We're in line one. Line two is over there.
05:57And line three is right behind me. I guess everything worth eating is worth waiting.
06:09Let's eat. Hold it up next to your head. It's massive.
06:13Trying to get a thumbnail.
06:20Definitely tastes like Italian meat.
06:25Pretty good, ma'am. And now Garrett already took a bite of my sandwich but I'm going to take
06:30my first bite of my sandwich.
06:35The fococious is really crispy. The prosciutto is good. It's fatty but not too fatty.
06:41I didn't get any of the mozzarella or the tomato in that bite but really excited to get into that.
06:46All right so we took our sandwiches to the Arno river to eat with a view. Lauren show them the view.
06:55And both of these massive sandwiches were 12 euros so the first one the La Favalosa is basically like
07:02salami with some eggplants I think and some sort of cheese spread. I literally think there's a pound of
07:07salami there. It's kind of crazy. The second one is La Summer which is basically prosciutto,
07:12tomato, and mozzarella on fococious bread. They're both delicious. I think I prefer the one Lauren got
07:17which is the La Summer. But it's pretty cool. You walk in there and these guys are just like bringing
07:23in bread, freshly cutting this fococious bread. It's like a assembly line of sandwiches and they're
07:27just cranking them out. So if you're ever in Florence definitely check it out because it's a great
07:32cheap on-the-go lunch spot. Even the birds are a big fan of the sandwiches. Now I need some steps to
07:38work off that big sandwich so we're going to climb to the top of a hill to get a great view of the city.
07:43Time to cross the river.
07:45There's no roses in the rose garden.
08:02I'm living trees. Oh my gosh. Did you know baby lemons? They're not quite lemons yet.
08:09Can you see it? And we're going to do a big bowl of lemons and orange lemons. Are those oranges?
08:18Feels quite plump.
08:23There might not be a lot of actual roses in this rose garden right now, but there sure are a lot
08:28of really good views of the city and plenty of benches to sit on and take a rest while you do so.
08:32We made it to the top of Florence.
08:45Okay, we're headed back down the hill. We're going to cross Ponte Vecchio. That's the last
08:49tourist site for the day. Then maybe some gelato and back to the hotel for a nap before we have our
08:55steak dinner. Peep all those people in line at the Uffizi Museum. Listen to us. Listen to Rick
09:01Steve's. Get your tickets in advance. Try to go as early in the morning as possible. It really
09:06wasn't crowded at all while we were there, especially when you compare that to the Academia Gallery. So
09:11don't be those people. Okay, so this is the view of the Ponte Vecchio or the main bridge that's right
09:19in front of us from Ultra Arno or the other side of the Arno River. You can see that the bridge that
09:25is now the Ponte Vecchio has a walkway, right? Let's see if I can show you. There's a walkway
09:30at the top, a second story walkway that goes and connects to the Uffizi Museum. So the Uffizi Museum
09:38occupies what used to be the offices of the Medici family. Uffizi actually translates directly into
09:45offices. That second story was actually a private walkway for the Medici family. It was donned with
09:50all of their favorite art pieces and it was basically a way for them to walk between their
09:54living quarters and the offices without having to go through the crowded pedestrian bridges.
10:05Just came back to the hotel, got some coffees from the lounge area and we're gonna hang out. We did
10:11a lot this morning. I feel like we like walked all over the city and then back again
10:16multiple times. So we're gonna rest, maybe put the feet up, hang out for a little bit. And then we
10:22have a very special dinner planned tonight because it's Garrett's 28th birthday. So we're gonna go get
10:31the Florentine steak, like the big, you know, kilogram, two and a half pounds of meat steak served,
10:39you know, kind of crispy on the outside, rare on the inside. Big steak and veggies night as a big
10:44celebration of another trip around the sun for this guy. So me turning 28, that means we're about
10:50one year into this vlog now. And when we originally set it up, we were on a goal to hit about 30 new
10:55places that we've never been to together by the time we turn 30 years old. So Florence, where we're
11:01at now, is location 10 out of 30. So we're about a third of the way there, one year in. So we're tracking
11:07pretty well, I would say. We have quite a few places to go, but we're really just trying to
11:12enjoy the moment and we're excited for whatever comes our way. The hotel has given us these cute
11:19yellow umbrellas. It is raining officially. We're going to go get an aperitivo and then go to our dinner.
11:23I'm wondering why Garrett and I have separate umbrellas instead of sitting here cuddling under
11:39one umbrella like a cute couple on their honeymoon. It's because we have a foot and two inch height
11:45difference. And whenever Garrett holds the umbrella, I'm soaking wet. And whenever I hold the umbrella,
11:50I'm hitting it in the head. So the hotel graciously let us borrow two umbrellas so we each have our
11:57own form of rain protection today. Look at this grazing nice juicy plum tomato with a healthy dose of
12:11bufalada mozzarella. And a little bit of basil and pesto just for good measure.
12:20This is 1.3 kilograms of steak and it passes the three to four finger test.
12:42So I think we got a good cut. Four of my fingers and I got small hands.
12:48So we're just leaving dinner as you can see with our nice little yellow umbrellas. It is still raining
12:53here, which is unfortunate, but dinner was really good. We did get the traditional
12:59steak or the Florentine beef tenderloin. What was it called?
13:05The stucca alla Florentini. It was a very massive steak. It was basically a T-bone. So you got the
13:12ribeye and the filet and it was exquisite. I mean like we got it rare and the meat was so tender
13:19and it was actually really good. I was a little skeptical at first. Then we got some mixed vegetables
13:23with some truffle fries and overall everything was really good. The truffle fries, my hot take is
13:29their freezer french fries with a very good truffle on top. That was okay. But now we are headed back
13:34to our hotel and then we have a bright and early wake-up call tomorrow, which we're really excited
13:41to share tomorrow. So we will see you then. Good night.
