00:00If you missed our previous video, we landed in Antigua, Guatemala, explored the city, drank way too much coffee.
00:06Drink too much coffee and I'm jittering.
00:09But today is the big day. We are hiking Acatenango Volcano and couldn't be more excited.
00:15And maybe just a little bit nervous.
00:17That's how I feel, I guess.
00:20Good morning. It is about 7.30 in the morning.
00:23We are about to get picked up by our tour guide and today we are hiking Acatenango Volcano here in Antigua or nearby Antigua.
00:32So it is a pretty intense hike.
00:33It is three miles straight uphill and the total elevation gain is about 5,000 feet.
00:39Packing up all of our gear and we're going to head out.
00:42Wish us luck.
00:43Fuel, carbs, hopefully it helps.
00:47Mmm, it's like a french fry.
00:50It's here.
00:50How are you my friends?
00:53Good.
00:54Good morning.
00:54Good morning.
00:55Buddy, watch your head please.
01:01Camera is a lot to carry so switching over to the GoPro for the hike.
01:05Okay.
01:06Calm down there girl.
01:09The highest point at Acatenango Peak.
01:12We're on the hike.
01:14Six hours uphill with the best guide ever.
01:18First hour and a half is in farmland.
01:25It's busy.
01:28Take your water.
01:30Don't let this clip deter you.
01:32The start of the hike could be very busy because it's one way up and one way down.
01:36But as we moved along the trail it was much less crowded.
01:39How do you feel?
01:42Tired?
01:43I feel like this bag's all on my hips.
01:45We are transitioning out of the farmland and headed into the rainforest.
01:49We're about to go through the official entrance.
01:51So I think that was just like the warm up.
01:52The lungs are breathing.
01:55Feeling good.
01:56Every time I'll get you to realize that you're not out of breath.
01:59It just reminds me.
02:00How much you love me.
02:01Got to register and pay and then we can enter.
02:05My heart is in my throat.
02:07The hike is pretty intense so fair warning.
02:10We have officially entered the cloud forest.
02:12It's pretty cool how the scenery just changes as you go up in elevation.
02:16Make sure you drink water.
02:17Pack some sunscreen.
02:18Eat some food.
02:20One step at a time.
02:21So the camera doesn't really do this trail justice I don't think.
02:24It is literally straight uphill.
02:26So we started off at 8,000 feet.
02:28We're going all the way to 12,000 feet tonight where we'll camp.
02:31And then tomorrow morning we will summit the volcano.
02:34I'm out of breath.
02:3630 more minutes and then lunch.
02:38I make this homemade hummus.
02:41Quick siesta after lunch.
02:48I don't know.
02:4830 minutes to camp.
02:49Who knows?
02:50Everything's on.
02:51Guatemalan miles in time.
02:52But this is Guatemalan flat.
02:56So not flat flat.
02:57But definitely much more doable than what we were doing before lunch.
03:02We're smiling and talking.
03:03Which is very different than how it was before.
03:06And it's cold.
03:07It's getting colder.
03:08Which feels nice.
03:09Made it!
03:11We made it to camp at 12,000 feet.
03:14Home sweet home.
03:15It's a little bit snugger than the other tents we've stayed in.
03:19But that's good because I was worried about being cold.
03:22So now Garrett can just sleep on top of me.
03:24And I'll be fine.
03:25So just sitting in the tent.
03:27Listening to the rain.
03:29I'm still asleep.
03:30Yeah.
03:31Me too.
03:32I just described the hike.
03:34In one word.
03:36I'm going to be.
03:37Adventure.
03:37That's kind of a lame one.
03:39Pick another one.
03:42Perseverance.
03:43Mm-mm.
03:44That's probably not going to be good.
03:49That's great.
03:52So normally we'd be able to see fuego from our campsite.
03:55However, it is a little bit cloudy.
03:56We are hoping that it clears up soon.
03:59There's fuego.
04:00It gets really cold up here at night.
04:03So you have to bring a lot of layers.
04:05You know, when you start hiking, you're sweating.
04:07And it's probably like in the 70s, 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
04:11When you get up here, as you can see, we are in the clouds right now.
04:16Which is upsetting because we haven't seen fuego erupt yet.
04:19And it's kind of starting to get dark.
04:21But it gets really cold.
04:22I think it gets down to zero degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
04:25So make sure you have plenty of layers.
04:27And bring some gloves and some beanie or something.
04:38We saw a little bit of a volcanic eruption through a phone.
04:42Our eyes couldn't really see it.
04:43We could see it a little bit.
04:44But now we just got into our tent.
04:46We're going to rest up.
04:47And tomorrow we're going to summon it if it's good weather.
04:50So we're going to get some rest.
04:52But we'll see you bright and early at 345.
04:55Buenos noches.
04:56Buenos noches.
04:57All right.
04:58It's about 415, 430 in the morning.
05:01We woke up at 345.
05:02We were supposed to summit to the top this morning to see sunrise.
05:06However, the weather is still pretty bad.
05:08It's kind of still rainy and really foggy.
05:10We're like in the middle of a cloud.
05:11Our tour guide and our local guide said you most likely won't see a sunrise.
05:15And you really couldn't see but like five feet in front of your face.
05:17So we all made a judgment call just to forego and hang out in the tent.
05:20So we're just going to hang out here for a couple more hours.
05:22A few more hours of sleep.
05:24Maybe get a few more hours of sleep.
05:26And if we can see the sunrise, we'll see it from the tent.
05:30But right now it's pretty cloudy.
05:31So if not, we'll just head back down and go enjoy our last day in Antigua.
05:34Headed back down.
05:44Going down on the volcanic ash is actually kind of fun.
05:47You just kind of like ski down.
05:49I don't know.
05:49It's like the sand dunes that we did in Jordan.
05:52Kind of just like catch us.
05:53You dig your heels in and you go.
05:55We got back to the hotel around 10, 10.30 this morning.
06:08And we literally could not form a sentence.
06:11This is how I feel like this.
06:15For real.
06:17Can we go eat dinner?
06:18Like probably their lunch time.
06:20Yeah.
06:21And got a delicious lunch at a cafe that Garrett found.
06:25Coffee.
06:26We're feeling really energized.
06:27And most importantly, we took a shower, which felt fantastic.
06:31Overall, it was such an awesome experience.
06:34Even though it was mostly cloudy, the glimpses that we got were definitely making it all worth it.
06:39There are a lot of things you should know if you want to have a good time on this hike
06:42in order to be prepared.
06:44Make sure it's an enjoyable experience.
06:46We're going to share those with you guys.
06:47As soon as we get home, we have an early morning flight tomorrow.
06:50But tonight, we're going to go enjoy Antigua.
06:52And then we'll film all of that and let you know we'll be packed and everything you need
06:56to know to have a great experience.
06:57So, adios for now.
06:58Hasta pronto.
07:00Hasta luego.
07:00There we go.
07:02All right.
07:02This is how we got.
