Church & Conversation: A Safe Space for Socially Anxious Adults?

00:00Can the church help build social skills for awkward adults? If you clicked on this video,

00:04obviously you did it because you feel like you're an awkward adult and you want to improve

00:08your social skills and your conversation skills. So if you're a churchgoer or you want to be a

00:11churchgoer, I'm going to talk about that as well as some other methods you can use to improve your

00:15social skills and feel more confident. Let's jump into it. Can the church help build social skills

00:23for awkward adults? So the short answer to this is yes, the church can help build your social skills

00:27as an awkward adult as long as you go there to engage in conversations. Basically any kind of

00:32group environment you can get yourself into where you're going to subject yourself to conversations

00:36is going to be good for you to build your confidence and build your conversation skills. Churches very

00:40often have other social get-togethers as well including bible study and other events where

00:45you're going to be able to get into conversations with people. Now one of my former clients as a

00:48dating coach was a regular churchgoer and he would very often go to the church youth group where he

00:54actually managed to get some dates and he was using the church youth events as well as the

00:59Sunday sermons to talk to women to get dates as well as talking to friends and making new friends

01:03and this worked very well for him. But one of the things you're going to want to avoid if you want

01:07to practice your conversation skills and stop being an awkward adult and build your confidence

01:11it's not just getting stuck with one little group in the church you don't want to be a part of one

01:15small circle and not talk to everyone else because it's easy to talk to people you're comfortable with and

01:20you're familiar with. So when you go to these church events every week even if you have friends there

01:25make sure you branch out every single time and talk to somebody you haven't talked to yet. This will

01:30add the pressure factor which is going to help you improve your confidence because you need to talk

01:34to as many strangers as possible to really do that. You're going to feel a little bit of pressure

01:38because you're talking to a stranger as opposed to talking to your in-group which you're really

01:42comfortable with and it's just you know it's easy just to connect with. That's what requires you to

01:46learn some social skills. Now here are some other things you can do to also build up your social

01:49skills and stop being so awkward by getting into more conversations. Now number one the best method

01:54of all is just being social in general just talking to everybody every time you go out talk to the cash

01:59registers talk to the barista the waitress just start conversations with everyone just make a comment

02:05on something simple something in an environment something relevant to them is best and it doesn't matter

02:09if the conversation is long it'll be 20 seconds with the cash register it doesn't matter or the cashier

02:14I mean don't talk to the cash register but this will give you lots of opportunities to practice

02:18these conversation skills. Another thing you can do every single day when you go when you leave your

02:22door and you walk past people just be friendly just say hi you're not going to actually get into

02:26conversation with these people as you're walking but say hi as you pass by maybe a friendly smile

02:31and keep going. Point is you need to get into as many conversations as possible so going to your

02:35church group or church events is going to be a great way to do that but also branch out outside
