00:00:00Every orifice up on the car so that no air could get inside the radiators.
00:00:05They knew they were going to blow the car to bits, but they wanted that record, and they've got it to this day.
00:00:10I think Peter Dumbrake holds a record for the highest flight.
00:00:14Yeah, highest flight, yes.
00:00:16So fastest down the Mulsanne was the WR Volta car, the highest down the Mulsanne was Peter Dumbrake.
00:00:22Oh, of course, Mark Webber did the same thing, didn't he?
00:00:25Twice.
00:00:25I said I'd never come back to Le Mans.
00:00:27Here's your duel, and Sebastien Borde has dropped straight into the middle of this battle.
00:00:32You better make sure your outlap's quick, because everything else is measured almost against it.
00:00:37And when you've got somebody on your tail, you need to take care.
00:00:41Yeah, absolutely.
00:00:43Well, this is teammates battling against each other.
00:00:45Sebastien Borde with Scully Dixon.
00:00:47They have history, of course, pleasant, indeed, but nobody like beating more than your own teammate.
00:00:53And this will be bragging rights within the same team.
00:00:55The 68 car versus 69 at the moment.
00:00:59Let's look at the wider picture of that at the moment.
00:01:02We've had now six hours racing, and those three Fords are six seconds apart.
00:01:07That's remarkable.
00:01:08That's quite, quite extraordinary.
00:01:09I'm sure Jeremy will have something to say about that when he comes back on air in a short time.
00:01:13Well, you know, they may well have been hobbled, but it seems that they are coping with it beautifully.
00:01:19Likewise, Malicelli, his Ferrari, likewise, had some performance dialed down, extra weight, etc.
00:01:27The flashing lights still going on.
00:01:29This is not to pass Borde just for the time being.
00:01:32I don't believe, anyway.
00:01:33Let's have a look.
00:01:34But that's the battle for second place.
00:01:36The Ferrari is still leading just for now.
00:01:39We're just waiting for it to circulate through with its next series of changes.
00:01:42They've all taken six stops, that is, the lead five in GT Pro.
00:01:47So there are the two that are together.
00:01:49That's Borde and Dixon, and then just behind them, about five seconds behind Billy Johnson.
00:01:56They are running, just to confirm, in second, third, and fourth places.
00:02:00But the point I'm making after six hours of racing, to have those cars covered by just six seconds,
00:02:07that shows just how equal their performance is in the drivers.
00:02:10Time for a bit of 69 on board here.
00:02:13We have Malicelli out front.
00:02:17In fact, he took the lead of this class in the pit stops.
00:02:22So I don't know whether it's more tardy for the Fords,
00:02:25but nonetheless, it's Ferrari out front in this class.
00:02:27Well, of course, and the difference between these two Fords as well
00:02:30is that Scott Dixon has been on board now for a couple of stints, I think.
00:02:34He may well have used tires on there.
00:02:37Borde, as he's a new driver getting in,
00:02:39will definitely have a new set, I would imagine.
00:02:42There's the lead.
00:02:43Yeah, and yeah, that's the leader in the Ferrari.
00:02:46So Borde should be able to stay in front of Dixon.
00:02:50And I think, I do believe it's pulling away a little bit, isn't it?
00:02:53Four and a half seconds is the deficit, just for the time of reading,
00:02:56for the lead Ford in the hands of Sebastian Borde.
00:02:58And we've got a super slow-mo art shop and a series of them for you.
00:03:02Take any of these and put them on your wall.
00:03:04I thought I saw Fonzie in the back of that Corvette.
00:03:08Really?
00:03:10Take it out, Jordan Taylor's dog.
00:03:12Oh, right, okay.
00:03:12Well, there was a weight penalty,
00:03:14and we're reliably informed by Mount Cole that the average Spaniel weighs...
00:03:1915 kilos?
00:03:1920 kilos.
00:03:2020.
00:03:21There we are.
00:03:22The average Cocker Spaniel, called Teddy, weighs 20 kilos.
00:03:26You're feeding him too much.
00:03:28Here we go.
00:03:29Excuse me.
00:03:3193 laps.
00:03:32I don't think we're going to get anywhere near the lap record here,
00:03:35but hey, you never know.
00:03:37The clouds that have bedeviled us seem to have absolutely dissipated.
00:03:41It's turning into rather a clear sky.
00:03:44Because of the lack of heat throughout the day,
00:03:46apparently we're expecting a very, very chilly night.
00:03:4814 Celsius as a maximum, possibly going down to as low as 9 Celsius.
00:03:54So if you're here and listening in,
00:03:57don't know how you're managing it, but well done if you are,
00:03:59then you need to wrap up tonight.
00:04:01Possibly a little bit of respite from the rain for the poor souls
00:04:05who are in the campsites, which are a little bit muddy.
00:04:09Yeah, let's hear it for them.
00:04:10Most of them have been there three or four days.
00:04:12They've had the worst of the rain, of course,
00:04:14and just when we thought it was all over,
00:04:16it appeared again, didn't it, at 2 o'clock today,
00:04:19and we had this wet start to the race.
00:04:21We're still trying to think if there ever was a start
00:04:24behind the safety car at Le Mans.
00:04:26Audi and Porsche have wrapped their collective brains,
00:04:28and they can't remember it, so I certainly can't
00:04:30in the 35 years I've been coming here.
00:04:33Well, there's been an awful lot of toings and froings here.
00:04:38Possibly the most complex one was Jeremy Shaw trying to get
00:04:43into the racetrack itself.
00:04:46He had a couple of goes at it.
00:04:48It could have been even more serious, to be honest,
00:04:51because without our muscle power,
00:04:54he would have actually had the vehicle stranded
00:04:56in the aforementioned mud.
00:04:58We're looking at the leader right now.
00:05:00More on Jeremy Shaw and his attempts to get into the stadium
00:05:02a little bit later on.
00:05:04Cumboy actually leads then ahead of Bernhard.
00:05:07Anthony Davidson's Toyota making a Toyota 1 and 3 at the moment,
00:05:11so the filling in the sandwich is Bernhard running
00:05:15in the number one Porsche as we speak,
00:05:18with Gianni's Porsche in fourth place,
00:05:22and the Audi of De Grazie,
00:05:23and Fastler's Audi, the number seven,
00:05:25is up to seventh place now.
00:05:28Absolutely outstanding.
00:05:29Great piece of retrieval, only two laps down.
00:05:32Do not count them out.
00:05:44Just under 18 hours remaining then.
00:05:48Just doing a brief mental tally.
00:05:50You can probably hear my brain fizzing, to be honest.
00:05:52It's four laps from the second place,
00:05:56five laps from the top for the Rebellion.
00:06:01On 87 laps, the lead is on 94,
00:06:05so a brief bit of maths.
00:06:06Seven laps behind is the Fastler car.
00:06:09But he is hauling in that Rebellion.
00:06:10That's a good point.
00:06:11That's the two-lap gap that you mentioned
00:06:13from the Rebellion is ahead.
00:06:15The number 13 Reb,
00:06:16which is one that hasn't had the problems,
00:06:18Mathieu Touche, the youngest driver in the race,
00:06:2119 years old.
00:06:22And as we keep reminding everyone,
00:06:23second overall in the World Drivers' Championship,
00:06:26thanks to those two podiums at Silverstone and Spa.
00:06:30There we are.
00:06:31We will be having a change of personnel fairly soon,
00:06:35but don't forget we'll be here for the entire 24 hours.
00:06:37I can have a sigh of collected relief from our audience.
00:06:40Yes, I'll be going to a darkened room
00:06:44where they just feed me cognac-covered sultanas.
00:06:48I don't know, that's a wood bunting, isn't it?
00:06:51Anyway, that's another recipe.
00:06:53Pizza, pizza.
00:06:55Just remember, guys, keep those tweets coming.
00:06:58Plenty to go, plenty of long time to go,
00:07:00and we've got 18 hours of racing ahead of us yet.
00:07:04As Toyota continues the portion Toyota and Porsche.
00:07:08Where's Audi, you're saying, if you're just joining us?
00:07:10Well, Audi, if it wasn't for problems,
00:07:12wouldn't have any luck at all, would it?
00:07:15If it wasn't for bad luck,
00:07:16we'd have no luck at all.
00:07:17Is it awesome?
00:07:18Yeah, and of course, they're down to two cars,
00:07:20as is Porsche this year,
00:07:22so they don't have another one to call upon, do they?
00:07:25They're running fifth and seventh at the moment.
00:07:28Tom Christensen, when he came and joined us for a while,
00:07:30said that doesn't mean you give up.
00:07:32He said the second car may not be in contention now,
00:07:35but the amount of data you can collect from that car
00:07:37and help the other one out.
00:07:39You can try tyres out you're not sure about.
00:07:41You can try all sorts of things.
00:07:43Well, of course, they'll never give up,
00:07:45and at the very worst,
00:07:46they'll use this as an extended test session
00:07:48for the number seven,
00:07:50but I wouldn't definitely not really even that out
00:07:53because there's, what, just under 18 hours left,
00:07:56and anything can happen.
00:07:58And it's getting to the point of the evening
00:08:00where the sun is really low that we spoke about earlier,
00:08:04and it makes it difficult because it just pierces the driver's eyes,
00:08:10and it's really difficult to focus,
00:08:12really difficult to see the limits and the ages of the track.
00:08:15It was almost poetic, the way you described that.
00:08:21Hardly.
00:08:23But these pictures are certainly living artists,
00:08:26I can't have been saying earlier.
00:08:27Here's a Kami-ai Kobayashi-san, Japanese driver.
00:08:32This is his second participation here.
00:08:35He's had a fifth place here.
00:08:36Let's just look quickly, while we're looking at that,
00:08:38we hope to this fifth generation.
00:08:40Oh, no, no, that's a shame.
00:08:43That's the Pegasus car.
00:08:45This is the only surviving Morgan, maybe.
00:08:48Well, I don't know.
00:08:48I think they're doing their level best.
00:08:50Yes, yes, yes, tatting of the Champagne family.
00:08:53So she's gone straight on at Mulsanne Corner
00:08:56and buried the car in the tire wall.
00:08:59Well, I'm not sure whether it took a spin
00:09:00before it actually got to that point.
00:09:02We're just, of course, hoping that she is okay.
00:09:05Let's have a look at it.
00:09:07Still can't see, to be honest.
00:09:09No, she just outbraked herself, Carlton.
00:09:11One of the few open cars, as you can see.
00:09:14So if you have to be in the grandstand,
00:09:16you'll probably see some blushes there.
00:09:18It's been a handful throughout.
00:09:19Yeah, so Damien, what happens?
00:09:21She's in the wall.
00:09:22What do you do now?
00:09:23Stay in the car.
00:09:24There is a rule, of course,
00:09:26that if you get out of the car and walk away,
00:09:29I think it's a few meters, it is, something like that.
00:09:32So she's on to the team.
00:09:33Of course, she's on to the team.
00:09:34The team will be telling her to stay in the car,
00:09:36stay buckled up, and wait for help, of course.
00:09:40She's not going to get out of the gravel traps.
00:09:41She's going to get beached.
00:09:42So someone will come.
00:09:43There'll be a yellow flag.
00:09:44There'll be a slow zone,
00:09:46and we're just seeing that yellow at zone 20,
00:09:50just a yellow at the moment.
00:09:51The only good thing in her favor,
00:09:53she's in a dangerous position.
00:09:55If she stays in the car,
00:09:56they can pull her out of the gravel onto the hard standing,
00:09:58and hopefully she can get the car fired up
00:10:01and get it back to the pits.
00:10:02Oh, that's the idea.
00:10:03Yeah, it's a lucky place, to be honest.
00:10:05If she wasn't in a dangerous position,
00:10:07she'd be left to it.
00:10:07That's the point.
00:10:08That's when the exclusion zone,
00:10:09I think it's two meters,
00:10:10so six feet away from the car.
00:10:12So you can't really stand too far back
00:10:13to appreciate or assess the damage, to be honest.
00:10:18Somebody asking about LED lights.
00:10:20You'll see one, two, or three down the side of the leading three cars.
00:10:25We're going to take ourselves a break.
00:10:27Some of you will be enjoying the 24-minute magazine after this.

00:14:42race you've had nothing but blue sky since that first hour of rain yeah it was a lot of downpour
00:14:49now they got into the rhythm the second and even the third drivers have been through we just saw
00:14:55before that the return now lotterer just jumped in the outing number seven so through their
00:15:02problems they've had a big setback um everyone is starting through the second round second
00:15:08one in the cars pretty soon as the sun irritating get into your eyes out of the forest down towards
00:15:15indianapolis it's now soon the night will be there so they're getting a little bit sunstruck
00:15:21as they come to the low sun and also today leman has been a little bit starstruck because there's
00:15:26been a very handsome collection of hollywood stars here let's have a look at who we were visited by
00:15:31today
00:15:41well alexander verts took brad pitt around the circuit super g olympic gold medallist and
00:15:47multiple alpine world cup champion actual and schwindar was on the grid together with actors
00:15:52brad pitt jackie chan and jason statham pierre philand the aco chairman and the fia president
00:15:59john todd were also here
00:16:11this is one of the most thrilling honorable motorsport experiences i've ever had
00:16:16so of course great to see brad pitt jason statham keanu reeves patrick dempsey jackie chan but it's
00:16:44great because they're not all just here to show their faces they all have a deep love and a
00:16:47connection with motorsport yeah they don't know most certainly i mean they are here all of them for
00:16:54the first time and it's nice to see them being being impressed of all the fantastic acting they have
00:17:01they have done on so many great movies so it's great to see them here and they're all they're very
00:17:06inspired i mean i had the pleasure of also now spending time with jason statham taking him into
00:17:12a few corners and he really loves it too of course he's famous for the fast and furious franchise jackie
00:17:18chan who owns one of the teams here kcmg was in cannonball run uh keanu reeves has a motorbike
00:17:25company and brad pitt got a ride with alex vert so it's a brilliant day out for these hollywood stars now
00:17:29down to the important business lmp1 has been very exciting so far the lead keeps changing just your
00:17:35overall impressions ah great three horse race and toyota's showing the incredibly strong pace
00:17:41kobayashi making the fastest lap not long time ago and it's very exciting porsche seems to have
00:17:48the upper hand in control but i'm not quite sure when i just passed by there the concentration and the
00:17:54determination is is there listening on the radio calls it's uh it's all you know there's tension
00:18:02how do you have the little setback or big setback with seven car eight they uh hopefully will go well
00:18:08when they get into the tire compound which might can go more than three stints what they are and what
00:18:14they have been doing at this so far well we're just where we're just standing only minutes ago we saw
00:18:20myself faster get out and andre lotter get in uh but if you haven't been following the race so far
00:18:25here's what's been happening lmp1 up to this point
00:18:3384th edition of the 24 hours of le mans starts behind the safety car
00:18:40well brad pitt waved off the field with the trigger law due to the monsoon that hits the pre-grid
00:18:49the cars were waved off under the safety car and the field actually followed the safety car for
00:18:57eight laps and 52 minutes before they went green and it wasn't long before the number six toyota of
00:19:04mike conway hit the front and started to set the pace overtaking loik deval the number eight audi team at
00:19:12bernhard in the number one porsche and neil yarni in the number two porsche to take the lead after the hour
00:19:19in the sister car the number five toyota swiss driver sebastian bohemi was also on the move
00:19:32and the toyotas were soon one two after the first pit stops though it was brendan hartley in the one
00:19:39porsche the kiwi that took the lead
00:19:44and surprisingly the number seven audi running so strongly early on hit trouble and it wasn't until
00:19:51six laps later that benoit trullier was wheeled back out of the garage we had to change the turbocharger
00:20:03quite surprisingly i can't remember the last time we had a problem with the turbo but it happened and
00:20:07the boys did a really good job by changing it in 20 minutes it's very particular of course but for
00:20:12the race it's unacceptable one car was in trouble the sister car the number eight audi of loik deval
00:20:22took the lead and brendan hartley in the number one unperturbed took that back going into one of the
00:20:30the chicanes on the moulin as the toyota's marched on the number six of sebastian bohemi almost forced into
00:20:47a mistake by one of the lmp2 cars there and after the second pit stop mike conway it was that was out
00:20:56behind brendan hartley after two and a half hours it was porsche toyota and audi separated by less than
00:21:04three seconds mike conway close to the back of brendan hartley setting the fastest lap on the way
00:21:16i was pretty pretty cautious in the first two stints it's the longest that we've been on tires so far
00:21:21because we've had lack of testing and you know qualifying in the in the wet conditions we didn't
00:21:25know how long we could make the tires last just keep it on track and long long way to go but it's nice
00:21:30to be leading early on with kiwi brendan hartley out of the car already it was the turn of mike conway to
00:21:37jump out of the sixth toyota after an outstanding quadruple stint kamai kobayashi took the wheel seems to be
00:21:44getting better as the stints go on so uh we just lost a little bit of time to porsche on the third
00:21:50stint then we seem to catch a little bit towards the end again so i think we always get that with
00:21:55the first set of tires you're trying to go three stints with so i think it will get better for us as
00:21:59the first day goes on well whilst anthony davidson had a problem with a puncture in the five toyota
00:22:10the number one porsche continue to lead mark weber at the wheel of that followed by kamu kubayashi
00:22:16at the wheel of the number six toyota kuma kariashi with the fastest lap of the race so far
00:22:22and he leads mark lieb in the two porsche so that's the story so far just to bring you bang up to date
00:22:27the number six toyota is leading by 14 seconds from the porsche number one from porsche number two uh
00:22:32toyota number five and then audi number eight now tom and i have been joined by dr ulrich it's
00:22:37excellent to see you here outside the number eight pit garage um how do you see how this first
00:22:43section of the race the first six hours has gone for your team so far i mean it started very exciting
00:22:49because with the heavy rain we had it was a very special beginning i think it was the very first
00:22:55time in the history of the 24 hours of lemon that the race was started behind the base car if it dried down
00:23:03then we've been the first ones to change to slick tires and this was a good move so we went with
00:23:11the car number seven in the lead unfortunately we've been catching a technical problem a completely
00:23:18unexpected one we had a problem with the turbocharger and had to change the turbocharger
00:23:23the guys did a tremendous job and changed it in 20 minutes
00:23:26uh but for sure it was not what we hope that we have to do uh the race was then bouncing back and
00:23:34forward the car number seven is now six laps back the car number eight was always keeping in the lap
00:23:42with the leaders we are now depending from how the pit stop runs in about uh 20 to 40 minutes behind the car
00:23:52that is on second and third position so we keep on fighting there and we just saw andre lotterer
00:23:57getting in the car were there any special instructions for this stint for him what do you want to see
00:24:03from andre to make up some places yeah i know i know that i mean andre was very strong at the beginning
00:24:10of the race i know he's going to be strong again but i have to say that we have really two nearly
00:24:17identical strong squats with the six cars we have and i'm happy that we have these drivers excellent
00:24:23now um tom it's pretty impressive that the team managed to change the turbo in 20 minutes but 20
00:24:29minutes is still a long time in a 24-hour race it is and particularly it's hard when it's in the in
00:24:34the beginning of the race it's absolutely very challenging and it's a setback to keep driving back
00:24:41and they have to do it there's a world championship fighting on as well you have to remember
00:24:46so the boys there's no doubt they will do it and they can take a little bit more risk in trying
00:24:51to get back but normally without problems on the other cars the the win is out of the hands of number
00:24:58seven but you can only win with one car and that's the whole grid is thinking that but of course the
00:25:04three horse race is still on with toyota leading porsche is now comfortable second and with car number
00:25:11eight still very much in the hot fire because this race the night is very very important
00:25:16for the pace what you can carry through the night and that's still very open uh what do you think
00:25:22of tom's doing his new job as a presenter for us i'm quite sure he's doing it great as he did a great
00:25:28job with us for many years he certainly did thank you very much dr ulrich thanks tom uh we're just
00:25:33hearing that car number one the porsche is under investigation and it is in the pits
00:25:39that halfway down the pit lane so we'll find out more about that after this break
00:25:43so much of that we also have a short event of the pit lane so we'll find out more about that
00:25:56for a long time in the very short event through the road for the city 5 feet of the pit
00:28:30So, welcome back to Le Mans 24 minutes.
00:28:35We are live in the pit lane.
00:28:36It's pretty frantic around here.
00:28:38The sun is setting behind the grandstands.
00:28:40We still have Tom Christensen alongside me.
00:28:42So, we don't quite know yet what's happening with the number one Porsche team, but there's clearly something going on.
00:28:46The Toyotas are still leading, and I think Liz managed to catch up with Kamui Kobayashi quite recently.
00:28:55Kamui, we've passed the six-hour mark, or near enough, 1,000-kilometer race.
00:29:03The fight at the front, especially between Toyota and Porsche, is very, very strong.
00:29:07Yeah, I think looking, I think, very tight for each other, but looking pretty good for ourselves.
00:29:14I think we had one more lap, longer stint, which is an advantage for us.
00:29:19So, you know, now we know our pace, and I think we can manage.
00:29:22Without travel, I think this is the most important thing.
00:29:24So, take it not too over pressure, and just be quiet, and hopefully, I think we have to bring the car without any trouble.
00:29:32And we're just coming into the nighttime now.
00:29:35Is the plan to do four stints for each driver?
00:29:39Well, I think if we could manage, I think we could, but, yeah, I think it depends how we can do.
00:29:44For the moment, I think it depends how it goes.
00:29:47For the moment, I don't know.
00:29:49Okay, thank you.
00:29:50So, Tom, Kamui Kobayashi is doing a really good job in there.
00:29:57There are 16 drivers here currently at this race this year with Formula One Heritage.
00:30:02Firstly, does that discipline lend itself naturally to endurance racing?
00:30:07Yeah, from the driving technique, for sure, and the commitment of the driver and of its expertise.
00:30:14But you need here really much to gel with other drivers,
00:30:18and it seems very good personalities in other ways has to suit each other
00:30:23and get a good flow in terms of communication, be honest, be open.
00:30:30All the things which you tend to see a little bit from the one, it's very narrow-minded,
00:30:35a lot of pressure, particularly from the media every 14 days.
00:30:39With the WEC, it's a bit less.
00:30:40People enjoy it here, but particularly at Le Mans, it really shows if there is some friction.
00:30:46And Kobayashi has been very relaxed, like the attitude he came in with.
00:30:51He was relaxed for the race.
00:30:52So, it seems like he was able to bring that comfortable onto his first stints in the race in the LMP1 car.
00:31:01And talking a little bit about Toyota, obviously they're leading the race now.
00:31:05The weight of history is upon them because they haven't won here at Le Mans.
00:31:08What will be going through the team's mind, the driver's mind, with a quarter of the race gone already and they're leading?
00:31:15The whole Japan is really crossing fingers for them because they have tried so many times.
00:31:21And the only Japanese manufacturer who has won here is the screaming rotary engine with Mazda.
00:31:25So, there's no doubt that Toyota really, really aims high at trying to win.
00:31:30We know last year they were nowhere and they have made a very good job coming back and already showing the pace they show now.
00:31:36There's no doubt the pressure is on everyone.
00:31:40But I'm very impressed with the race so far.
00:31:44It's probable to be your best one.
00:31:46We just saw a pit stop there for the number 61 Ferrari.
00:31:50I think we should have Simon Kupfer as an interview.
00:31:54Do we have Simon Kupfer with Brendan Hartley?
00:32:01It seems things are running perfectly well for you guys at the moment.
00:32:06The race is really close.
00:32:07Give us a little insight of how much risk is the driver taking in a moment like this, in this stage of the race.
00:32:15Yeah, we're just, I mean, we're trying to keep it obviously on the road.
00:32:19That's the most important thing here in Le Mans.
00:32:20But unfortunately, we just lost 40 seconds to the Toyota.
00:32:27They missed the slow zone.
00:32:28So, yeah, they were able to pit while the slow zone was going on.
00:32:32So, yeah, a bit disappointing.
00:32:34We've just lost the lead of the race.
00:32:36But a long way to go.
00:32:39Just got to keep doing what we're doing.
00:32:41We had a good start to the race.
00:32:42And the strategy guys are doing a good job.
00:32:44Mechanics are doing a good job.
00:32:45Engineers.
00:32:45So, yeah, just keep it on the track and keep doing what we're doing.
00:32:48Thank you very much.
00:32:49Well, that's very interesting.
00:32:54Thanks, Simon, from Brendan Hartley.
00:32:56It looks like they're getting ready for a pit stop here at Porsche.
00:32:59So, we're trying to stay as much out of the way as possible.
00:33:01So, talk to us a little bit about Porsche.
00:33:03Big win last year.
00:33:05They're fighting at the front now for a win.
00:33:07What's the strategy for them, do you think?
00:33:09The strategy is always to go as fast as possible without taking any necessary risk.
00:33:18But you have to take a lot of risk to do the pace you're already doing.
00:33:22Otherwise, you're never going to make it.
00:33:24So, it's to be comfortable.
00:33:26And I think they have shown pace.
00:33:28But it's irritating if they lose a little bit of time.
00:33:31Like if other, which have a strategy, some miss the slows or not, which gives the setback.
00:33:37And obviously, you can hear.
00:33:38It's a bit irritating.
00:33:39And that nerves.
00:33:40And that gets on the tension when you are potentially in the car.
00:33:43So, it's getting tough.
00:33:45And they also feel the pressure of not retaining the crown again, like anyone would do it.
00:33:51And it's unusual this year because, of course, Nico Halkenberg isn't here to retain the title.
00:33:57But you can tell in that crew, particularly Mark Webber's crew, they really want to win.
00:34:01They came close last year.
00:34:02They really want this.
00:34:04Of course.
00:34:05Everyone really want this.
00:34:06But you have to think the moment.
00:34:07And they're doing that.
00:34:08And you can hear on the radio communication the way that they are.
00:34:13They are comfortable.
00:34:15But for sure, a few sets back, a little bit mistakes in terms of strategy.
00:34:20The heat is very much on.
00:34:22And the pace Toyota has shown, I think it's very good in the changeable condition.
00:34:26And in the night is changeable condition already with lower temperatures.
00:34:31So.
00:34:31So, it looks like we have to be very careful now because the number one Porsche is about
00:34:38to swing it.
00:34:40Porsche 1 is coming through the Porsche curves, appropriately named.
00:34:43And it's on its way into the pit lane to see us.
00:34:45Now, as we wait for that to happen, of course, there are plenty of Porsches represented in GTE
00:34:50Pro.
00:34:50In a minute, we're going to have a look at the highlights of GTE Pro.
00:34:53But we've got the two winners from last year in LMP1 in GTE Pro.
00:34:58How much of a downsize is that for them?
00:35:00Yeah.
00:35:01Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy did a fabulous job last year, both of them.
00:35:04Nick Tandy was superior through the night in his debut in the LMP1 car.
00:35:08So, that takes a beat for him.
00:35:11But nevertheless, people know what he can do.
00:35:13And he's still a young pedaller.
00:35:15And they will for sure, maybe be reunited in the future again with Nico Hülkenberg.
00:35:21That's for sure.
00:35:22It takes a beat.
00:35:23But they still have a good job.
00:35:25Well, let's see if this car is.
00:35:27So, let's hang on here and have a look and watch the car come in.
00:35:32And Tom, what would be great is if you can talk us through the process that's going on
00:35:36as the car comes in live here on LMP1 24 Minutes.
00:35:39So, the car is coming in.
00:35:41If you could take over and just tell us exactly what the procedure is.
00:35:46Here we go.
00:35:47And he has a good eye on the lollipop man.
00:35:50And he will stop in perfect.
00:35:52As now you can see, he will just touch the board and it will move a lot.
00:35:58They're on.
00:35:59It's cleaning the screens.
00:36:00Cleaning the taking off and tear off of the lights.
00:36:04Cleaning the front windscreen.
00:36:08Giving him another water bottle.
00:36:10The refueling is going on.
00:36:12So, you can only watch with a lamp the technician on the brakes.
00:36:16Watch the tires.
00:36:18And the refueling will come off in a second.
00:36:24And immediately the refueling goes off.
00:36:26The car will move.
00:36:28Incredible.
00:36:30Amazing.
00:36:30A well-executed stop.
00:36:32Well-orchestrated.
00:36:34And they have done this hundreds of times in practice.
00:36:37To make this inch and very good perfect.
00:36:40Thanks, Tom.
00:36:41Great job.
00:36:42So, now let's have a look at what's happened so far in GTE Pro.
00:36:45Well, the battle in GTE Pro started with Ford on pole, Ferrari following, and the Porsches as outsiders.
00:37:01Well, the Porsche 92 enjoyed the rain and led the race for the first two hours as problems hit the 51 Ferrari.
00:37:09The 91 Porsche of Nick Tandy and the 92 of Earl Bamba.
00:37:13The 2015 winners were fighting it out in GTE Pro.
00:37:17But it was Ford that hit the front with the 68 overtaking the 69.
00:37:22Problems for the 91 Porsche as overheating took its toll.
00:37:33And that was back in the garage.
00:37:36At around 7.30 local time, it was the 68 Ford, the 66 Ford, and the Ferrari 82 separated by less than a second.
00:37:44A big fight between those three.
00:37:47Just before the 9 hour mark, it was the 68 Ford, taking a margin of around 35.
00:38:06Wins, 66, 67, 68, 69.
00:38:10The numbers of the cars, and it looks like Ford possibly could be on to do it again.
00:38:14Oh yeah, it's early days, but they've shown what they did in qualifying under the changeable conditions.
00:38:20They're taking it into the race, they're through the first pit stop, and they are one, two, and four.
00:38:28And in that sense, Ferrari is for sure the pressure is on.
00:38:31Into the rhythm.
00:38:32In terms of the Ferraris and the Porsches, the Aston Martins, and the chance for Corvettes to win again like they did last year.
00:38:50It looks like it's all Ford at the moment.
00:38:52But have they got the technology to go through the night?
00:38:54We don't know.
00:38:57I would assume so.
00:38:58They made the debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and they were pretty fast.
00:39:05They had some issues, but they have done miles since.
00:39:07And good drivers on board as well.
00:39:10Good team, four cars.
00:39:11That shows the effort they have done to come back.
00:39:15But Ferrari don't underestimate them through the night.
00:39:18They have the experience.
00:39:19The setback is a little bit on both Porsche and Corvette.
00:39:23The BOP, it's how you spell it.
00:39:26And let's not talk about that.
00:39:28But that's always a fighting point within this great category.
00:39:32Well, at the moment, the balance of power is less than 10 seconds between the top three in GTE Pro.
00:39:37So both of the main categories here are racing incredibly closely.
00:39:42I think Liz Halliday should be at Ford right now with Oliver Blatt.
00:39:49Thank you, Neil.
00:39:50Yes, I'm here with Olivier.
00:39:52Ford is possibly on the brink of making history in their return since 1969.
00:39:57Did you expect the car to be so strong here at Le Mans before you came?
00:40:02Well, we were expecting something, but it was the first time for us here with this car at this track.
00:40:11But it's actually a very good surprise.
00:40:14I think the World 4 team have been working incredibly hard to prepare this car at its best.
00:40:21And now we are really happy at the moment.
00:40:23And of course now we're heading into the night.
00:40:25It's always a question of reliability.
00:40:27Do you have a plan for the stints through the night yet?
00:40:30The plan is to push hard.
00:40:34Fair enough.
00:40:34Thank you very much.
00:40:35Back to you, Neil.
00:40:38Well, I don't know if you saw that because quick as a flash.
00:40:41That Porsche just left.
00:40:42It took a little bit of fuel, splash and dash, and it's gone.
00:40:45But don't you go anywhere because we're right back after this break.
00:40:48But don't you go anywhere because we're in the way.
00:41:02Road to Sud.
00:41:035th inning.
00:41:04Dump.
00:43:34Welcome back to Le Mans, 24 minutes.
00:43:38Now, the sun is just properly setting behind the grandstand.
00:43:41Now, I know that you said it's hard for driver visibility, but for everyone else, it's absolutely beautiful.
00:43:45Yeah, for everyone else.
00:43:48It's also beautiful for most of the lab around, but basically it's out of the forest down to Indy.
00:43:55Very irritating.
00:43:57Now, we have started with 60 cars.
00:44:00We've already had a couple of cars still in trouble.
00:44:02Shame, real shame for this.
00:44:04The 89, the WeatherTech Proton.
00:44:07Cooper McNeil was struck sick.
00:44:09He had a fever.
00:44:10So he couldn't race.
00:44:12And the reserve driver wasn't allowed to drive because I think the ACO deemed that he hadn't done enough laps.
00:44:18Yeah, you need to do laps during practice.
00:44:20So you can't change driver normally after not taking part in practice.
00:44:25But this isn't something that we see very often.
00:44:27Talk a little bit about how the reserve driver works.
00:44:30That's the challenge of Le Mans.
00:44:32And you have to be ready to go...
00:44:45We're just being moved over this white line by the Marshal.
00:44:50Yeah, so...
00:44:51But I think it's 2009 when...
00:44:54No, for me, basically, to be two drivers, that's always a chance to shine.
00:44:59And at Le Mans, two drivers, it's incredibly tough.
00:45:02André Lotterer, for example, I think he showed me his promise.
00:45:06When he had one of his teammates, Katikeyan, unfortunately fell when he crawled the pit wall just before the start of the race.
00:45:16And had to sit out with, I think, with a broken collarbone.
00:45:19And Albers, I believe, and Lotterer did the entire race.
00:45:23And Lotterer, particularly at night, made a good introduction with a private Audi car.
00:45:28From the team collars.
00:45:30And the year after, he was signed by Dr. Ulrich and joined us.
00:45:34And have so far done it extremely well.
00:45:37So it pays off to get sort of one and a half time overtime to do that one race with two drivers.
00:45:42And I think a few doors down at Porsche, we have Simon Kutler with Mark Miller.
00:45:50Yes, Mark, this has clearly not been your day.
00:45:53First of all, you could only start with two drivers.
00:45:55And you were pretty good in the race.
00:45:57Tell us a little bit, what did you think?
00:45:59How was the situation for you guys until you crashed out?
00:46:02Well, it's unfortunate to not have a third driver.
00:46:05But, I mean, the way I look at Le Mans and growing up, seeing history from this race,
00:46:11it's always been two drivers before it became three.
00:46:14And those cars were much harder to drive back then than what we have now.
00:46:19So I thought we had a great opportunity.
00:46:22It's not necessarily the drive time that was going to be so difficult because that's not the hard part.
00:46:27It's the recovery time.
00:46:29And you need to make sure you get the right amount of recovery.
00:46:31And we thought we had a plan sort of to make that work.
00:46:36So, I mean, I thought we had a great opportunity, especially looking at the leaderboard
00:46:41and where we were sitting and the pace of both of our drivers, both Lee and myself.
00:46:44I thought we had a great chance to be, you know, in the hunt for the whole race.
00:46:49So, even words for these guys.
00:46:52Thanks very much, Mark, for joining us.
00:46:55Yeah, that is a real shame there.
00:46:57A real shame for that team, the Quiletic Proton team.
00:47:00But there you go.
00:47:01It's Le Mans.
00:47:01They'll be back next year, I'm sure.
00:47:03And they'll fight again, whether they've got two drivers, three drivers, or one driver.
00:47:07Now, this driver, his absolute legend next to me, showed us a little bit more about the intricacies
00:47:13and the difficulties of what the safety car involved, which was particularly relevant
00:47:17because this race, for the first time ever, started under the safety car.
00:47:21Have a look at this.
00:47:39OK, on fait partir le safety car avec Tom Christensen.
00:47:41So, let's take a lap at this magical track.
00:47:54Normally arriving here close to 300.
00:47:58It's time to Sega gear, the Dunlop chicane.
00:48:01Kiss the curb on the left.
00:48:03A little bit more on the right of this track.
00:48:07Unlikely top speed, depending on the wind, down towards the first chicane.
00:48:15Hard on the brakes in this official safety car.
00:48:18It's good to be home.
00:48:31Sixth gear.
00:48:35Seven gear.
00:48:38Up to the Michelin chicane.
00:48:40The sun is out.
00:48:46Fast in.
00:48:47But even faster out from the right-hander.
00:48:56Very important to keep the momentum on these straights to achieve good benefit.
00:49:05Into Mulsanne corner, we're told there's some oil from here.
00:49:12Oil from the track from here and all the way to the finish line.
00:49:17Beautiful section going down to Indianapolis.
00:49:25Beautiful section going down to Indianapolis.
00:49:33Very slippery.
00:49:35I can feel that.
00:49:36Indianapolis using the bank.
00:49:38A little bit of the curb.
00:49:39Accelerating up to the slowest part of the track.
00:49:44The Anarche corner.
00:49:53Beautiful section.
00:49:55Setting you up for the very demanding Porsche corners.
00:50:00Here they are up to 270, 280, the prototype through here.
00:50:21It's very blind, even at daytime.
00:50:24Maison Blanc, very fast.
00:50:26One gear down.
00:50:27Setting you up to karting where it can easily bite you.
00:50:31As the road drops off and the car really want to get out towards the curb.
00:50:39That was one lap at Le Mans.
00:50:41We just missed the Ford chicane where you need a good flow to set you up for a perfect lap.
00:50:46But personally, it was nice to be back and just to test the tracks for this year's edition.
00:50:51That's a fascinating insight there, Tom Christensen.
00:51:04While we were watching that, we saw what I think is the number 67 Ford has gone into the gravel,
00:51:09which is a real shame that's one of those cars down.
00:51:12When you are driving the safety car, not that you've necessarily done it as a job,
00:51:17what are the skills that are essential to keep the cars behind,
00:51:21the LMB1 cars who are raring to go?
00:51:25Yeah, obviously I had the opportunity last year to lead the field around.
00:51:29And you simply are...
00:51:32This year we didn't get that start, obviously, but you're really driving the lap.
00:51:38So you start exactly on the point, 15-0-0.
00:51:42So you are leading up and in the end you are going down from 110 to 80 to 60.
00:51:49And when you are out of karting and you are approaching the last chicane
00:51:53and you hear the field, you hear the...
00:51:55Sensation of this year at the start.
00:52:09But the safety car driver at the start is on a time plan.
00:52:15So he has to drive very, very good in that.
00:52:19And he has a guy next to him to tell him to slow down.
00:52:21And I had that as well.
00:52:22And it was slowing down quite a lot.
00:52:25Who tells Tom Christensen to slow down?
00:52:27Nobody.
00:52:28If you look carefully over social media over the next 24 hours,
00:52:31you should be able to see a 3D virtual reality version of that as well appearing online.
00:52:36Well, the pink fluffy clouds, the sun's going down, we're about to move into the night.
00:52:41And driving at night, as this man knows, is a very special set of skills.
00:52:45Allow Tom Christensen to explain.
00:53:06The night at Le Mans is very special.
00:53:21Let's talk about driving at night.
00:53:23You can't get further away from the pit area than here.
00:53:32In a year, you are arriving flat out into this heavy braking zone,
00:53:38pulling more than 4 Gs in trying to reach the perfect apex here at Mulsanne Corner.
00:53:44Driving at night a few years ago was dark all around the track,
00:53:48except around the pit area, which create a little bit of irritation and the eyes to adjust.
00:53:53And then you're left and you're out in the dark again.
00:53:56Now, specific places has brilliant floodlight.
00:53:59The floodlight creates this stadium atmosphere.
00:54:02And the fans love it because they can identify the cars or the favorite cars or driver better than before, even at night.
00:54:09And driving at night also means that the cooler air temperatures help the aerodynamics.
00:54:14It's better for the engine and ideally also better for tires, maybe softer on brakes.
00:54:19But it has to be that you hit the targets.
00:54:21So basically, when you leave the pit area, you immediately have to create temperatures and keep it on the limit.
00:54:27Try to look into that zone where you can perform the best as possible.
00:54:32It's a difficult disability.
00:54:33Sometimes you really don't see where you are, but you have to feel it.
00:54:37You have to feel it inside you when you are hitting these targets all around the circuit.
00:54:44The driver who takes it into the night, takes it through the dusk,
00:54:48and then in the night gives it to the next driver who will be completely into the night
00:54:54through his stint of about three hours on average,
00:54:57giving it to the third driver who will then have the benefit of initially the dark night,
00:55:03but then he comes out and takes a little bit of the early light from the morning
00:55:08and getting into the sunrise.
00:55:09We call it the happy hour.
00:55:11It's a perfect time to be in the car.
00:55:13And when you perform well there, it's brilliant.
00:55:16And then there's only about nine hours to the end of the race.
00:55:33Tom, that was an extraordinary, and I can't quite imagine what it must feel like to drive
00:55:40around here at low speeds at night.
00:55:42I'm watching you now, watching the cars.
00:55:43I can see in your eyes that you'd quite like to be driving it again.
00:55:47Honestly?
00:55:47Oh, yeah, obviously.
00:55:49I envy them, but that's not mine.
00:55:52I'm a rookie.
00:55:53I'm learning, and that's what I'm doing now is being here with you.
00:55:56But the night is magical, mythical, and it's coming in the next hour,
00:56:03so you get into the dark zone, and the drivers are just wanting to find that very much.
00:56:09Coming out, really hitting the target immediately.
00:56:12There's nothing better with that habit.
00:56:15If not, it can be the opposite, and it can be a terrible feeling.
00:56:19So night is very special.
00:56:21And just before we finish today's show and carry on with the race,
00:56:26how do you think the next few hours are going to go as it goes into the dark?
00:56:30It's so open.
00:56:31It's so open.
00:56:32Now they're analyzing teams to maybe try four stints on the tires in LMP1 cars.
00:56:39At the same time, the temperature goes down.
00:56:40That means the switch to the softer compound, which I know they have in the back, all of the teams.
00:56:47When they do that, it's to go four stints or swap to the softer compounds.
00:56:51That's something that's really going through the mind.
00:56:54And so it will be at least another two or three hours before we see who has the upper hand at the start at the beginning of night.
00:57:02Fantastic, Tom.
00:57:03Thank you very much from all of the team here.
00:57:05Keep watching the race, obviously.
00:57:07But we're standing right outside the box of the Toyota that is leading the race with Stefan Sarazan behind the wheel.
00:57:13Will he still be doing that when we come back in the morning?
00:57:15There's only 17 hours racing still to go.
00:57:18We'll see you in the morning, but keep watching the Le Mans 24 hours.
00:57:21Porsche представляет гонку 24 часа Лимана на каналах Евроспорт.
00:57:42We'll see you in the morning.
00:58:12Come here and visit my world.
00:58:15Here are streets shining stars.
