00:00:00and has gone to the hospital for further scans and further check-up and we'll
00:00:03continue to update you when we know some more. So that brings you up to speed now
00:00:08hopefully within the next six or seven minutes we'll go back racing here at
00:00:11Le Mans
00:00:22here's your chance to win a very special Corvette Grand Sport top it off with a
00:00:26trip to next year's 24 hours of Le Mans just go to racetowincorvette.com for
00:00:31more details on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity can I sign up for that no
00:00:36you can't I don't know why you can't drive one right yeah there might be two
00:00:47different makes of cars in his driveway and I'm sure that Chevrolet is not one
00:00:50of them see the Michelin tire engineers looking over the tires down in the
00:00:54Peugeot camp understand that there is a potential issue with the number seven
00:00:58driven by Marc Genet right now being shown in second place. Bruno Femin the man in
00:01:03the middle there technical director for Peugeot Sport he gave us a look around
00:01:08the 908. And you got to believe that after the explosion and it's the only way
00:01:14to describe it of Mike Rockenfeller's Audi R18 there is so much carbon out on
00:01:20that racetrack right now that those little shards we talked about the rocks
00:01:23earlier you think those are sharp the little shards of carbon fiber out there
00:01:27that all that traffic has run through repeatedly I'm surprised we haven't seen
00:01:32tire issues before now and guaranteed when it's time to go back to green
00:01:35everybody's going to come and go for fresh rubber. If you if you're smart you
00:01:39will and you got to remember these tires are hot too so they will pick up
00:01:41everything that they can find. I mean a little bit different to the McNish accident he
00:01:46was way off the racetrack that really didn't shower the debris back onto the
00:01:49track whereas Rocky's totally different deal everyone's been driving through that
00:01:52area even though the marshals who do a tremendous job here have really cleaned up
00:01:57the scene pretty well. Well we talked about potential problems in the Peugeot camp
00:02:02and certainly Andrew Marriott will have ferreted those out if they exist. Andrew
00:02:06what's going on at Peugeot?
00:02:09It's a bit strange actually because they fired the car up with Alexander Virts in it and they
00:02:16shut it off and waited for about 15 seconds they fired it up again but I rather
00:02:20suspect it was more a tactical thing something to do with the pace car. I'm
00:02:23just hoping to get Marc Janais here I'm just going to move in and see if I can grab a word
00:02:27just been told by the Peugeot PR guy I must say it's been very helpful this year
00:02:31we got we got the French television going in first which we can understand
00:02:36and but she's prettier than you are Andrew. Yeah Greg go to you Greg and I'll come back to me.
00:02:47It's like I said she's prettier. Okay Andrew yeah just sort of a final update on the on the Audi
00:02:51scenario first of all after talking to Dr. Ulrich I talked to Eva Marie one more time and I said is
00:02:58there any consideration to pulling the number two after what's happened she said unequivocally
00:03:03absolutely absolutely not she said these were accidents it wasn't a technical issue with the
00:03:07car aerodynamic issue a la mercedes in 1999 she said that is not the case we are continuing with
00:03:14the two we will be racing I then went and talked to Brad Kettler and said and I basically asked him
00:03:20I said has there been as a result of what's happened any change in strategy instruction to the drivers
00:03:26about being more cautious not making these these very brave fast moves and he said no he said we've had
00:03:33nothing to that at this point and he said we really can't because that means we're just conceding the
00:03:38race and that's not what we're about so the two car is going to continue to race and race hard here's a
00:03:44great here's a great piece of news but I'm going to hold on on that because I guess Andrew is ready
00:03:49now with March and a mark Andrew I mean mark she's prettier than I am isn't she that interviewer yeah
00:03:58she is how difficult was it to keep your concentration there mark very because I had other problems not
00:04:06the accident from the Audi you know we had some problems at the end of the first thing which can I
00:04:11cannot go into detail and that cost me a lot of time so at the first thing that was even even get maybe
00:04:16getting closer with the Audi we're fighting for the first and then I just started losing a lot of
00:04:21time and I hope we fix it now now after you got out of the car Alex first in the car and then he
00:04:27switched the car off again was that just a tactical thing yeah I think it's the problem that I encountered
00:04:33and I think we're trying to fix it I didn't see but I'm sure we because we have something to fix
00:04:38and we need to fix it because otherwise it's going to cost us dearly okay thank you very much mark thank you
00:04:43thank you Greg
00:04:49well Andrew she may be prettier but you're a good looking man my friend anyway I just wanted
00:04:55to give you one final update I talked to one of the many uh Radio Le Mans pit reporters and one of
00:05:00them had scooted off gone back and found the tub of the number one car when it came in and he said it
00:05:07had been virtually cleaned every corner was gone everything was peeled off it but the tub he said it
00:05:12looked like the fuselage of an airplane the tub looked to be completely intact there was a small
00:05:17hole in the front of it where it had gone in but he said the footwell the rest all of it looked to be
00:05:23completely intact so I think that's one of the best pieces of news that we may have have heard yet so
00:05:28things are good as a matter of fact we're looking at a potential pit stop for the number two Audi
00:05:33and by the way Brad Kettler told me he said one of the things this is doing is they're getting their
00:05:37head back into the actual race said it's wreaking havoc with driver times in the two car and probably
00:05:42with the Peugeots as well because these diesels he said on a half a tank of fuel we can run almost
00:05:47three hours and he said of course that puts us now banging up against uh the driving time limit for
00:05:52each driver and he said we may have to stop with plenty of fuel and tire just to avoid going over the
00:05:57time limit so they are really crunching numbers in that pit stall number two and just to reiterate
00:06:03what the drive time maximum is it's any four hours in six so you're only allowed to do four hours maximum
00:06:11in a six hour run and 14 hours total for the same driver in this 24 hour race so we talked about
00:06:17justin talked earlier about maybe doing five stints and maybe jutting up against that four hour maximum
00:06:22so uh really keeps the engineers on their toes it's really easy to uh not pay attention on something
00:06:28like that nobody expects these things to happen nobody is really expecting these long yellows i mean
00:06:33typically there's an incident they cleaned it up they head on their way again not these where they're
00:06:37tearing up the barrier tearing up the racetrack where they happen to come in and have hour hour and
00:06:41a half long yellows i mean we talked a little touched on this a little bit at the earlier uh at the
00:06:46earlier side of the program where all this heat from the Audis is down in the center of the valley
00:06:51where they have the turbos up on top potentially they said this could be a problem for them so
00:06:56we'll have to wait and see how this unfolds as well well i don't know about you guys but it's uh 1220
00:07:02in france and uh greg and andrew have been away from home for a while and i've got andrew speaking
00:07:07french to or greg speaking french to andrew and uh now which one of these reporters would you rather
00:07:12get your valentine card from i mean andrew doesn't look you know particularly pleased that uh the pretty
00:07:17french girl has gotten marc janet and he is not heather's at home watching so i take the one on
00:07:23my lap good stuff now let's go to what marc janet was talking about cycling the car on and off does
00:07:31that sound like an ecu related issue well i mean you could make that argument but they come in and shut
00:07:35the car off on every stop anything regardless you know they come in you have to shut the car off when
00:07:40it when it goes to work now there has been times absolutely when when you come in and you'll leave
00:07:46certain systems on and shut other things off just to kill the engine power so it shuts it off
00:07:52uh so there has been times we'll cycle everything i mean we'll shut everything down cycle it wait for
00:07:59you know a few seconds and then turn it all back on trying to recycle trying to cycle through those uh
00:08:04those ecu's i remember verts when he jumped out after the opening stint said he had a real handling
00:08:09issue at the beginning of this race so i'm not sure if there's anything you know that they're trying
00:08:14to work on electronically that is affecting the car's handling uh this seems to be a problem outside
00:08:19of that parameter in terms of affecting just the performance the engine performance or something
00:08:23that mark would say would kill them over the distance of this race interesting that starting
00:08:27it up and then shutting it back down was a strategic move that would save an issue that would then save
00:08:32their race so andrew what else do you have from peugeot i know that you want it back in
00:08:36well i think you're reading absolutely right i think it's an issue something to do with the ecu
00:08:44or something like that when the car was sitting there and of course it was there for quite a while
00:08:49because they changed the tires as well no one was sort of looking underneath it or the only place they
00:08:54were really looking in was the cockpit and you know it's some electronic thing i'm sure because they
00:09:00just they weren't doing anything to the car at all and it was just strange they shut it down and then
00:09:06as i said about 20 seconds later they started up again it's a bit of a mystery but it's obviously a
00:09:10major worry for them just about just about that girl he did come to me you know in the end
00:09:19reluctantly reluctantly that's right that's right i don't know are the front tires wider than the rears
00:09:24he wasn't reluctant he likes me yeah we talked about the uh increase in front contact patches
00:09:32about seven percent more rubber on the road this year and they're within a couple of mil the fronts
00:09:36are marginally smaller than the rear but they're almost identical and there you see them getting
00:09:40ready looks like the two car is going to be in andre lauder are currently behind the wheel and
00:09:46they'll be looking at a driver change as well i think what's interesting if you're a fan of the
00:09:49american le mans series you'll remember the hvd acura that ran in the lmp1 category all four tires
00:09:56were the same size but all four tires were exactly the same that is not true on the audi we'll get to
00:10:00more on that right after greg tells us about the stop well already andre lauder is out of the car ben
00:10:09water the pole sitter has climbed aboard obviously fuel going in they are doing again a very aggressive
00:10:16clean of the windscreen and the headlights as well now the car up on the jacks that right front corner
00:10:21comes off and this uh choreographed ballet begins on getting everything done they do it a bit
00:10:26differently here right front then left rear you remember when we talked about the corvettes how
00:10:31their pattern was now they go to the left front and the guy comes over you can only have two people
00:10:36across one with a gun one as a helper and as the minute they cross that white line you see the next
00:10:40group move over and get it done it is uh practiced and choreographed it is unbelievable how they do it
00:10:46all the tires are done fuel is in driver change is in oh a little bit of a problem at the front
00:10:52something looks like it's stuck up and underneath the car this is a bit of a delay now they say it
00:10:58is ready to go and trullier is on his way i think greg what they may have been doing there is maybe just
00:11:04cleaning out those grills there's a lot of pickup a lot of marbles and stuff and they have these little
00:11:08grills in there and if it gets really bad they also have a filter system we saw it first on the
00:11:12peugeot a few years ago when we had that wet weather race and the radiators just get full of gunge and
00:11:18grime and they do have a filter but it's not planned on changing it talking to the team this week and
00:11:22don't forget you've had that massive crash and all that all that debris on the racetrack that could
00:11:27easily have filled up any part of that intake system trullier waits at pit out uh he's being held
00:11:34there waiting for the next safety car the crew continuing to work on the armco guardrail system
00:11:40on that run to indianapolis after mike rockenfeller's crash we'll take this opportunity to take a quick
00:11:45break and then we'll be back to the 79th running of the 24 hours of le mans plenty of excitement so far
00:11:52throughout the race and we still have 14 plus hours yet to go make sure you catch all of the action
00:11:58right here on speed and speed.com
00:12:06back at the 24 hours of le mans now if you're a fan of speed which you obviously are on thursday night
00:12:12you may have seen dave despain on assignment in his interview with carol shelby it also aired right
00:12:17before our program here well if you missed it let us show you an excerpt from it
00:12:21he was all about winning he didn't care who he's primarily the greatest salesman i think i've ever
00:12:30met you simply have to say he's a larger than life guy he's the chicken farmer who became champion of the
00:12:37road racing world he's been a test pilot a racing power broker a big game hunter he's the mastermind
00:12:45behind behind some of america's coolest cars he's a man worth getting to know better my name's carol shelby
00:12:53and performance is my business action a fascinating guy a fun guy to be around a great storyteller
00:13:02and maybe the best part is getting to drive the cold it's been a fun show to do i think it'll be a fun
00:13:09show to watch this is a war story we have trouble we have trouble out at mason block he's going to do
00:13:19it he's done it the field general is a tough texan whose name is synonymous with horsepower he ran the
00:13:27ferraris into the ground
00:13:29his name is carol shelby and his story is a racing legend
00:13:43well if you missed it you certainly don't want to miss it when it re-airs and that's on sunday
00:13:47at noon and then make sure you don't miss dave despain on the wind tunnel 9 p.m on sunday and all
00:13:52sports car show ricky taylor will be on with dave and we'll talk sports cars all night long
00:13:59he'll tell us some more secrets about his dad good thing wayne's not intense that's a good thing
00:14:08still under caution we're hearing 45 after uh the safety car period will be over and we'll bet
00:14:14be ready to go back to green we were talking about the tires on the peugeot and on the audi not being
00:14:20exactly the same size like they were on the accurate the other thing that's different the acura ran the
00:14:24same tire on all four corners my understanding the audi and the peugeot's actually have a dedicated
00:14:29steering tire yeah and obviously you're asking the front tire to do a totally different workload to
00:14:33the rear tire scott so i think the concept from nick worth and hpd when they brought out the acura
00:14:39with the big front tires to get that mechanical grip which was allowed within the rules certainly
00:14:44audi peugeot and others have now followed suit but michelin have now developed a tire specifically
00:14:49for that what you need from a front tire yeah and doing a lot of development on tires over the
00:14:54years i can tell you there is a significant difference between a traction tire and a turning
00:14:58tire and what acura did was they just used what was available to them you know they just said let's just
00:15:03try this on the front it worked it got better and they developed a car around that where in this set
00:15:07of circumstances with audi and peugeot michelin stepped up and said you know what let us develop
00:15:12a tire with you to do that steering instead of taking this rear tire and trying to accommodate it and
00:15:18isn't it interesting that this year independently peugeot and audi both came up with a design that
00:15:23utilized essentially the same size tire on the front and rear and the rebellion team they actually
00:15:28changed their car prior to the le mans test going to the wider front different suspension different
00:15:33body work and they feel that's a big advantage for them as well right now cars still behind the pace
00:15:39car and the safety period as we heard will last a few more minutes until about 45 after we'll take this
00:15:44opportunity to take a quick break and on the other side of the break krista vota at speed center she'll
00:15:49bring you up to speed on all the happenings in the motorsport world today so make sure you stick around we'll be back
00:16:03speed's coverage of the 24 hours of le mans is brought to you by just for men hair color live forward
00:16:09and if you want to make sure you don't miss a minute of the 24 hours of le mans this year the 79th
00:16:17running coverage continues on speed.com with uninterrupted live streaming of the race presented
00:16:22by chevrolet corvette so go to speed.com corvette to stream and you won't miss a minute of it 8 pm
00:16:30we'll be moving to speed.com otherwise you can stay here and watch the arca race from pocono but
00:16:34i'm thinking hey i'm switching over right yeah right in gte pro it's corvette that sandwiches the top
00:16:42five the 74 car in first the 73 in fifth more from the corvette camp let's head back down to greg kramer
00:16:52well thanks very much we've certainly seen our share of high speed incidents but even under caution
00:16:56things can happen danny we saw your car come in and it seemed to be a bit out of sequence what happened
00:17:01yeah we were a little out of sequence there olivier said that he uh was getting some fumes behind the
00:17:06safety car there we'd been under safety car for so long the fumes were going in the window
00:17:11when you're going fast the cars are spread out enough i think the air is okay but when you're
00:17:15going slow like that he just got a a bunch of fumes and didn't feel very hot so we decided to get him
00:17:20out um they're down in the uh with the doctors getting some oxygen i think it'll be okay tommy milner
00:17:26but now behind the wheel yep right now tommy's behind the wheel we uh let some more air in the cockpit
00:17:30uh hopefully uh eliminate any problems and we'll see how it goes all right and by the way that's
00:17:34a good look for you sir all right thanks by the way and i got to do this i got to give a bit of a
00:17:39we're not worthy here because this is andrew marriott by andrew what we're reckoning it's about your 40th
00:17:46lamar is that it yeah this is my 40th lamar and i have to tell you i am now the same weight as i was
00:17:55when i did it 40 years ago which you can more can say for greg kramer because he wasn't the same
00:18:01weight then as he is now yeah but andrew you're now that in kilos and you were pounds so well i guess
00:18:10i guess that's fair enough guys for sure but by the way danny you just had a son that graduated high
00:18:16school and how's he enjoying that uh that graduation ceremony back in the states yeah actually he's here
00:18:21his graduation of the ceremony was about seven or eight hours ago in brighton michigan and he missed
00:18:26it to come here and uh you know we're just a racing family and uh i gave him a choice and here he is
00:18:33well france over high school graduation i guess what are you going to do it is lamar after all thanks
00:18:37danny good luck for the rest of the race my friend you know guys corvette has been a leader in cooling
00:18:42systems inside the cockpit really trying to take care of the drivers they've got a seat an air
00:18:47conditioning unit and they've got a carbon monoxide meter in each one of those corvettes so it's
00:18:52interesting that beretta felt ill before something on the meter alerted the team that said hey there's
00:18:58there fumes inside the car that that's really interesting you know when i drove for corvette we
00:19:03weren't monitoring as much as they are now and they were still on top of it in those days
00:19:07and i can't imagine how far they've come over the past gosh it was 10 years ago now right and uh it's
00:19:12it's interesting for me that they were able to pull in that many fumes at this speed that would
00:19:17make a driver maybe not feel so good that i don't i know something absolutely is happening and that's
00:19:23and that's the good part a driver is smart enough going you know what yeah i don't need to be a hero
00:19:27here let me get out i'll you know do what i need to do to get myself back up to 100 that's the right
00:19:33thing to do now it's up to the team because maybe it's leading towards something else going on
00:19:37that could be a problem later yeah i think that's really where the experience kicks in if you had a
00:19:42young gun in there would be saying yeah i'm cool i'm good to go i'm good to go and then he's uh
00:19:46you know kind of dizzy so olivier made the call to get out of the race car and uh certainly the
00:19:51quality of air is such a fact that we see these helmet blowers and stuff and sometimes not just
00:19:56to cool the helmets actually get good quality air that the driver the drivers then digesting
00:20:03talk about being comfortable in the car the air conditioning units and and such that they have put
00:20:07in the car obviously the race car very different from the street car but still maintain
00:20:11some of the same type systems it is a production based car after all justin bell earlier this
00:20:16week had a chance to compare the corvette street car and the corvette race car
00:20:24at le mans the gt class cars are all based on production cars cars that you see on the street
00:20:30but how close are the race cars to the actual street legal versions well road and track recently compared the
00:20:37top le mans gt cars from porsche bmw ferrari jaguar and chevrolet to the street legal versions and do
00:20:43you know that no two cars were closer to each other than the chevrolet corvette c6r and its road going
00:20:51alter ego the zr1 let me show you some of the common components the c6r starts off with the zr1's
00:20:58aluminum chassis now while both cars make liberal use of carbon fiber you can see it here and on the
00:21:04seals down here the c6r has a more flared front end in order to accommodate the wider race tires now a
00:21:12great example of the collaboration between the race engineers and the road going program are on details
00:21:18such as the aero package the front splitter the rear wing and then on really important cooling
00:21:24details such as the inlets and outlets all over the body work which are designed for maximum aero
00:21:29efficiency and also to cool the engine and the brakes now this is where it gets really interesting
00:21:34they actually had to detune the incredible 638 horsepower of the road car to 470 horsepower on the
00:21:42race car in order to conform to the le mans regulations this is how chevrolet are bringing
00:21:47the race program to the street check out more on youtube.com forward slash chevrolet
00:21:55you guys was there something wrong with the aspect ratio of that picture because justin looked
00:21:59very very thin and i know that television adds at least 10 pounds what's the deal yeah he's another
00:22:05one who's annoying me lately these young drivers and justin chris neville we got more from the corvette camp
00:22:14and andrew yeah it's just a video it's only a quick one a bit 20 30 seconds max
00:22:21okay i think uh andrew's talking to the production truck over in le mans
00:22:34there's a lot going on with these broadcasts no andrew uh we call him the ferret and yeah he'll
00:22:39he'll ferret out anything yeah and i tell you what he is my hero because um to have the experience level
00:22:45and still have that passion scott at his age i mean uh hopefully i can still be doing this gig
00:22:51and uh be loving it like andrew does because uh he is the man we love having him on our team for le mans
00:22:57well in july you'll be andrew's age all right we've got andrew over in the corvette camp andrew what do you
00:23:02know well i'm just hearing now that this um co2 poisoning that olivier barretta has sustained is
00:23:12is quite serious and he may not be able to get back in the car for the rest of the 24 hours which
00:23:17will really put some pressure on tommy milner and antonio garcia so that's bad news indeed for
00:23:23for the multi-winner here and such bad luck for olivier barretta i wonder if they've done a blood
00:23:28test and measured the co2 levels in his bloodstream to make that determination or if they're just relying
00:23:33on how it is that he feels not only will it be hard on them physically the team is going to have to
00:23:38strategize on how to get that done and we've got a prototype that is spun under the pace car situation
00:23:45yeah that's the hope racing number five i believe it's the hybrid car just had some problems throughout
00:23:51the course of this event they've been determined to see the checkered flag but right now casper elgard
00:23:56on board don't really know how that happened is it at the exit of the porsche curves
00:24:03not to say now that is one brave corner worker obviously the cars are behind the pace car
00:24:07yeah but still there's three pace cars so every third of a lap there's a pace car coming so you
00:24:14don't have a lot of time to deal with take another look here it's like he just jumped on the gas and
00:24:19the thing just jumped right away from him he's on track it's pretty bizarre that looks like maybe
00:24:26coming out of the porsche curves maybe down towards the but and of course the thing that's interesting is
00:24:32casper elgard a very experienced driver he's got an lmp victory here an lmp1 victory in 2009 with
00:24:40collard and christian polsen so you wouldn't expect a driver of his caliber to have a situation like that
00:24:46now it is very cool over there but you know you can you can blame it on cold tires if you will but i've
00:24:52heard many people say in the past wait a minute they're all on cold tires cold spinning on cold tires
00:24:57is not an excuse yeah but he has hybrid power i'd say that's not an excuse either from what we've
00:25:03seen earlier today getting back to the corvette guys absolutely they'll check their blood i mean
00:25:08that's the best way to do it and these guys are on top of things as i touched on a little earlier
00:25:13i just hope it's not something inside the car not outside the card so they could be able to deal with
00:25:17it or look at it or certainly uh you know start looking at something because i just can't imagine that
00:25:23much coming up behind the pace car in front of you well i've never experienced anything like that
00:25:28before even when we were talking about cooling in the audi we we mentioned getting air inside the
00:25:34cockpit is one thing what's imperative is that you get that air out and especially if you've got some
00:25:40type of an exhaust leak obviously in a front engine gt type car that could be a concern that's a very big
00:25:46concern remember the regulations now in the old days you could switch drivers from the other car to help
00:25:51that you can no longer do that has to be one of the designated three that you have listed so it's
00:25:56not like westbrook or ollie gavin or whoever could jump over and do a quick stint to help those boys out
00:26:02they still got a lot of racing left 14 hours worth remember that andre lauderer had a similar
00:26:08situation where he and a co-driver had to share duties after losing one of their co-drivers at the very
00:26:13beginning corvettes are in
00:26:14number 74 is in ali is out it looks like richard westbrook getting on board and uh they are
00:26:23otherwise at this point as we've said many times when you're free fueling all you can do is wind
00:26:28screen and driver change and they are working feverishly at both looks like that driver change
00:26:33almost done fueling is done now the tire change starts and again they do this a little bit differently
00:26:38as we said they do one side of the car and then the other uh they've gotten this down to about 18
00:26:44seconds at their fastest they feel 20 seconds is a target it makes them feel more secure that
00:26:51all the wheels are on snugged up properly no issues it looks like this one is absolutely going to
00:26:57perfection that last set of tires and people are done cars down this time it fires up without any
00:27:04problems and westbrook is away so came in in the lead and obviously at this point the red light is
00:27:10on down at pit out and they're going to get held there meanwhile the uh second place right now in
00:27:16the am division of course the crone ferrari is in nick jansen is going to be getting out and the gentleman
00:27:22who qualified the car michael rugelow has hopped on board that a very quick stop they are underway
00:27:28they're going to be stuck as well and just to get back to that corvette pit stop the reason they
00:27:35do the right sides is allows the driver change on the left side to go smoothly you're not sort of
00:27:39like wrapping yourself in hoses so get the right side down by that time with the fueling and then
00:27:44the right sides being done the driver change should be complete allows the mechanics to go to work on
00:27:49the left i'll tell you the other team that is spectacular with pit stops and they go head to head
00:27:53in pit stop competitions in the american le mans series flying lizard and it's really corvette and flying
00:27:58lizards that are the best in the business at that yeah they are pretty awesome and uh again we spoke
00:28:02about earlier in the show charlie lamb from schnitzer who's uh with the bmw squad of course pitted right
00:28:08alongside uh corvette and pit lane and he just said wow those guys are amazing our best is like 23
00:28:13they're doing 18 19 20 is the norm that's a big factor over 24 hours pit stops happening here with
00:28:20some of the gt cars we'll be back to more action from the 79th running of the 24 hours of le mans
00:28:27circuit de la sun in le mans trans
00:28:36more live coverage of the 24 hours of le mans continues right here on speed as you know
00:28:41winning this epic race takes more than skill you've got to have strategy endurance and some luck and
00:28:46we've already seen competitors run out of luck today live coverage 24 hours of le mans continues
00:28:51tonight 11 p.m eastern on speed and continues straight through to the checkered flag so make
00:28:56sure you don't miss it and while we're away from the network speed.com and catch all the action right there
00:29:05understand that about five more minutes they were a little bit off on their first estimate than
00:29:09when they said a quarter till as far as the safety repairs to the guardrail after mike rockenfeller's
00:29:15horrific crash and so about five more minutes from now we're looking to go back to green but there's
00:29:20been plenty of excitement and stories even under the caution the uh situation with olivia beretta
00:29:27and the carbon monoxide issue is very interesting indeed and we'll have to wait to see if that is a
00:29:32situation with the car or the pace car itself we've already talked about that now the other thing is
00:29:38think about these drivers a lot of these cars we talked about it will come to the pits to make sure that
00:29:42they changed tires after running through all the debris that was out on the racetrack but it's been
00:29:46a long time since these drivers have been back up to speed do you leave this guy in if you do you may
00:29:52bump against that four hour mark we've already two hours since the crash um or do you put a fresh driver
00:29:58in either way you're going to be putting somebody in who has not been up to speed in the last couple
00:30:02hours yeah well benoit trillier has got it back in the car of course he did that blinding opening
00:30:06stint there which was uh about three hours 30 plus i think and uh before he had his first
00:30:13break of the day and uh he was really up to the task scott i mean last year this number two car was
00:30:18really looked at as just being there as like a safety net for audi but this year they are really
00:30:23getting the job done they're getting a job done and you can put any of those guys in the car and
00:30:27just plug them in and go there is no issue with a guy that's been in the car out of the car at this
00:30:31point in time at this level of of driver ability you can talk about a rookie that's a whole different
00:30:37set of circumstances talk about these guys you can plug any one of these guys in and go and and
00:30:41know you'll be right at speed see the first safety car has entered pit lane now does that mean they
00:30:49have turned the field i mean if they have we got a problem we said earlier there is really no protocol
00:30:55to this someone just said maybe he ran out of gas that's that's a good point he's been out there so
00:31:01much but talking to brad kettler from audi who's uh really running the two cars not engineering it but
00:31:05he's certainly running the car this year he told me last year he said they could suddenly just say
00:31:10they're going and they don't tell anyone there's no communication with the crew so
00:31:14keeps you on your toes and uh everyone's ready to go there's no wave around in terms of we're on board
00:31:19uh with one of the peugeots here but we saw the two car was further back in the pack
00:31:23and it's not necessarily the lead group even we talked about three pace cars circulating this
00:31:28racetrack you don't have to be the lead group on the start finish line when they suddenly say go
00:31:32you could be over in tetrouge or in malsan corner when suddenly you are released and the whole
00:31:37racetrack suddenly turns green just to reiterate three pace cars think of the circa as a clock
00:31:42there's a pace car at 12 o'clock one at four o'clock one at eight o'clock to separate this massive field
00:31:47you know we were talking about the drivers of the two car lauder fuzzler and
00:31:50trellier and we also talked about the fact that unofficially they're kind of like the third car on
00:31:56that program scott when you're in that position and you know it does it make you dig a little bit
00:32:02deeper do you have something to prove no no and what i mean by that is when you're each team each car
00:32:11has its order and they're easily could be run in different ways i mean that's the way we did it at
00:32:16ganasi we run two cars we run three cars we run them differently and we want the drivers to run
00:32:21them differently so based on that you're hired to do that job and that's what they hire if you're
00:32:28looking to get rehired again you probably want to do what they tell you to do because anything can
00:32:33happen just like we saw last year the peugeot's went out audi comes to finish just like what we saw
00:32:38at sebring which was a huge surprise for everyone and they were just doing what they needed to do
00:32:45yeah interesting to talk to mike rockenfeller earlier in the week and he said you know look
00:32:49we understand that the three car with christensen and dendo and allen is really the number one car
00:32:55here we understand that we understand where we fit in the hierarchy so just interesting to think about
00:32:59the two those three drivers have been kind of buried off to the side and yet they were the fastest here
00:33:04this week right one thing i did learn from lucas lure a couple of years ago he said the one thing you
00:33:08don't want to be is running a little bit off the pace third of the three cars because you then become
00:33:14the guinea pig if it's like raining should we go to our intermediates they're going to do it to you
00:33:19first and get a read so exactly you suddenly become the test bed for the other two cars so he said you
00:33:24want to keep at the sharp end at the beginning of these runs 52 degrees right now in le mans we understand
00:33:30the temperature will dip down into the high 40s tonight so when you do leave the pits on fresh
00:33:37rubber driver gets in you're going to want to make sure you have temperature in those tires however they
00:33:41do have the heating system that they use and i think that will be a big factor between the audi and
00:33:45persia when you're running a car that is light on downforce i think finding that premium the right
00:33:50tire compound scott is going to be really critical and it's going to be tougher i think it's not going to
00:33:54have the largest sweet spot like the audi potentially at night the good thing is you're absolutely right
00:33:59calvin and the other piece to this to remember is peugeot has a lot of experience running these
00:34:04cars in different conditions and working with with michelin as long as they have i think they have a
00:34:09very good understanding of you know when to go to what tire and that's the i think the exciting piece
00:34:15to all this is you do have that opportunity to go from medium to hard to soft ultra soft intermediates
00:34:21if it starts raining full range if you go into range and that really helps to maintain a faster speed
00:34:28and also these cars up underneath these guys the whole time alex freemont in the lmp2 leading
00:34:34car on pit road and you know what we talk about the tires is it looks like a routine stop are they
00:34:41adding some oil and andrew are you there can you add yeah there's nothing to say
00:34:48nothing man of bad words yeah thank you and nothing to say look like they're adding a little bit of oil and
00:34:54they've got time on this stop once again because of the safety car but the other thing to mention
00:34:58is it may be even more of a challenge cold tires quote if there is another safety car the tires that
00:35:04go on the cars here are actually quite warm yeah they say that tire warm was a ban but these massive
00:35:09ovens at the back of the garage everyone does it you know i mean it's like oh no we don't see that we
00:35:14don't see they don't have the heated blankets but it was talk of those being banned for next year but
00:35:18talking to teams down there this year they said now we think it's going to be the same way moving
00:35:22forward and andrew now does have something to say handy i certainly do cow because this car still
00:35:31with permanent has got a problem down on the left-hand side of the cockpit but they have just
00:35:38goes away from us so just a little bit of a hold up but they're having a terrific drama raker with that
00:35:44garage and you know that basically is the same chassis as the what we used to call the acura the hpd it's
00:35:51the chassis is very very similar and the hpd chassis is actually manufactured by garage so
00:35:56similar cars i think we just got the green boys pace cars in some people came in with him we talked
00:36:02about the strategy they're waiting because then you've basically got the other pace cars way down
00:36:07the road if you pit under yellow you've got to wait for that next segment i think is a big and a good call
00:36:12by some of these teams there's the leader the number two benoit trullier whoa look at that so
00:36:18close now he's a narrow ankle entry to that corner so easy it can go wrong and brad kettler said no
00:36:24this does not change our strategy that the other two outies are out we will go if we hold back and
00:36:29scott you and i talked about this earlier if you get off your game you're more likely to make mistakes
00:36:34and right now trillier is out there pushing that's true and i really like the thought of coming in putting
00:36:39tires on and fuel in right when you're going green like this two things happen one you're going to
00:36:43top up everything two you're putting on hot tires yeah hot tires that is really key and good clean
00:36:48tires none have got debris or anything like that that may have been picked up during this heavy
00:36:52portion period be interesting to see over the next 15 minutes or this half stint if we see any punctures
00:36:58how well the racetrack has indeed been clean there at the site of the accident mike rockenfeller had had
00:37:04we talk about mike there we do keep track of the leman.org website and there was a message on there
00:37:12it said that mike had called his parents so while that is not official we don't know that for sure
00:37:17it is posted on their website and if that is the case that is indeed good news you can see just how
00:37:22dark it is right now you know we saw sundown earlier but there was a little bit of light when mike had his
00:37:29incident two hours ago but now it is in the middle of the night and uh you can't describe this as
00:37:34anything other than dark and that's the darkness and that's the exciting part about what audi has
00:37:41done with the headlights up front you really get that opportunity to see a bit more and they are able
00:37:46to also flash these lights most all these cars have the provision to flash the lights to let them know
00:37:51the slower cars hey i'm coming by i want to make this move i want to come through and also don't forget
00:37:57there is a different set of circumstances you look at the prototypes they have clear or white light
00:38:03you look at the gt cars they are yellow lights there's a significant difference and guys need to
00:38:08know the difference trillier out in front but on these restarts it always gets a little bit close on
00:38:13board for that let's see oh there's the ford gt in front a little swing to the outside everybody's
00:38:21congested together you saw the other two gt cars part around the ford gt there and
00:38:27all of a sudden it sits in front of the corvette you got to make that aggressive move around the
00:38:32outside a lot of guys down in pit lane you just kind of got a flash of that as the eight number
00:38:38eight peugeot flipped by the pits guys coming in making that stop just as you go green frank
00:38:43montany behind the wheel they're just over two minutes behind benoit trillier who leads for audi
00:38:48and they were obviously caught in the other segment of the three pace cars there so that was the gap
00:38:54created by that caution period montany trying to close down the gap australia out in front we talk
00:39:00about the lights on the audi the first prototype to ever run a full led light system and if you've
00:39:06paid attention to the current audi marks on the street you'll notice led technology in the headlights
00:39:11there and the drivers really rave about the lighting that it projects for them and the ability to see
00:39:18not only straight ahead but off to the sides as well and the system is very very sophisticated
00:39:24and unlike the street cars they're able to run it at such a high level and not have to worry about
00:39:29the heat too terribly much they've figured out a way to cool them which is a problem with the led system
00:39:33but the light and lighting is just fantastic over the years we've in all the different race cars and
00:39:39i've been around for a couple years you continually are trying to find new technologies out there for
00:39:45brighter lights i mean some of the stuff that we've run in years gone by was absolutely horrible and i'd
00:39:50say within the last 10 years it's made massive moves forward because you're able to run lights that are
00:39:56incredibly bright bright like we see right there and they aren't using up all the energy where the
00:40:02where the alternators continually because you got a lot of electronics you're trying to keep on going the
00:40:07whole time and we talk about fatigue you know from a driver's respect we talk about heat in the cockpit
00:40:12and all of those factors but when you can't see very well just the mental exhaustion that you're
00:40:16having to utilize to get around the racetrack at these sort of speeds and you're always taking chances
00:40:20right that's the other piece i mean you don't really know where you're at and whether you're in
00:40:25the rain or whether you're at darkness like this there are times when it is a little bit of a guess
00:40:31tommy milner behind the wheel of the 73 right now down the mall song
00:40:41i think our audio is i was going to say hey it sounds like diesel corvette and he's flat through
00:40:46the chicane i thought that's pretty impressive you know i mean i know they're not carrying as much
00:40:51top speed as they would like but to be able to turn in for the chicane flat was pretty impressive
00:40:56wow that's a fast car right there tommy's young and brave he's on rails
00:41:02a bit of fight going on here talk about the caution bringing everybody back together that is a ferrari 458
00:41:07i can't see the number there on the outside the 59 and then a porsche in front and when you look
00:41:13back through the order it's magnuson leading the gte pro field right now that mark loosens and a porsche
00:41:19and uh fisichella in a ferrari so three different marks up front chevy porsche and ferrari and then
00:41:27the ferrari of jenny mellow runs right now in fourth and you got to go all the way back to fifth
00:41:32before you get to the second of the forces but good to see mark loosens there yeah i mean mark is
00:41:36a great guy he's run with the pro speed team before and uh just a really really quick guy you've run
00:41:41against him in daytona prototypes and one of those guys who's kind of slipped through the net over here in
00:41:45the us because giving the car he will get the job done he's a tough competitor he's a great
00:41:50competitor and a very good friend of mine unfortunately last year going out and over
00:41:54there with jaguar i think they only made one lap which was a really tough day for jaguar for the whole
00:42:00team and for himself so it's good to see him back here and and running strong surprising a lot of
00:42:05people too i think absolutely top three right now in gte pro are all on the same lap you saw the 48 on
00:42:12pit road the lmp2 car of alex premont he has a lap over the competition so for olivier lombard about a
00:42:20lap down so they could take the time under that caution not only was it behind the safety car but
00:42:25with a lap up on second place in lmp2 team wanted to make sure that they made the necessary repairs
00:42:31added some oil it looked like to the 48 before they put fremont back on track
00:42:36trilliers still up front overall tommy milner working his way through the porsche curves we'll
00:42:44have the two chicanes and on to the front straight away tommy milner uh has really found a good home
00:42:51here at corvette racing they were looking for a young american to uh replace the i don't know if you can
00:42:56replace johnny o'connelly's success over the years with the corvette racing team i know johnny's probably
00:43:01watching at home and fairly disappointed not to be here but if anyone could fill his shoes i think
00:43:06tommy milner is a pretty good choice he's really settled in well with his team done an awesome job
00:43:11with the problems that audi has had it is still an audi out in front benoit trillier from the pole
00:43:18running in the lead right now the 79th running the 24 hours of le mans
00:43:23speed's coverage of the 24 hours of le mans is brought to you by chevrolet an america's premier
00:43:34sports car corvette well just before the break alex prima was on pit road looked like routine service
00:43:42a little work to the car maybe some oil going in a little work to the left side and then he went back
00:43:47on track but moments ago prima back on the pit road and they put the car up on the dollies and rolled
00:43:53it into the garage area so a little bit more drama no andrew marriott was there and andrew i see you
00:43:58what's going on yeah i just had a quick word with the huda show now he tells me it's an electrical
00:44:07problem and he said it's a small electrical problem and i think they're putting they took a cover off
00:44:13which has now got back gone back on so i think this car will be back on pit lane
00:44:18in uh certainly two or three minutes i don't think this is that serious and indeed they're
00:44:22just pushing it out now with alexandra premier still at the wheel and so this car will be back
00:44:28in the race hopefully they've got that electrical problem sorted out well they didn't get it back
00:44:33in time because the 41 has now taken the lead in the p2 category they were a lap down they've already
00:44:38made up that lap olivier lombard behind the wheel right now of the zytec nissan for greaves motorsport
00:44:45so now the 41 back into the fray and it looks like fremont will go give chase they had that
00:44:50electrical problem i saw one of the uh one of the mechanics leaning over with a big roll of electrical
00:44:55tape so that took care of their problem perhaps a short or something like that these cars are so
00:45:03electronically controlled today we talk about a lot of ecu issues and such and right now
00:45:10a little electrical dribbling
00:45:12olivier lombard he's a rookie just 20 years of age he looks like he's about 15 when you see him and
00:45:18it's going to be a lot of pressure on that young man he doesn't have a lot of experience but
00:45:21being very impressive right in the radical series where he got the attention of tim greaves the
00:45:28uh team manager there andrew well he's an interesting guy olivier lombard because
00:45:39his family owns one of those big paris clubs you know where girls dance with lots of feathers on
00:45:45them the sort that justin likes and uh i believe some of the girls were here earlier today uh on the
00:45:51grid but somehow we missed them but uh his family's into the clubbing business so just the sort of
00:45:58person that justin should know yeah and andrew uh you're pretty good you got some dance moves i mean
00:46:03it's getting late in the going here we need a little entertainment for the folks at home maybe you could
00:46:07show us some of your moves mate buster groove i know you don't have your disco boots on this year but
00:46:12well fortunately i've just tied my laces so you have to my cameraman is going to have to show you
00:46:17my feet and then we do what we do with that how can we do this but what i have to tell you that's
00:46:22really painful because i fell down the steps of the audi hospitality about a couple of hours ago
00:46:27and my right pink toe is absolutely killing me so don't ask me to do it again please yeah that's what
00:46:32happens when you have three glasses of red wine at audi andrew is that three glasses
00:46:38oh my god i get those confused oh back to olivier lombard you know the other great thing is for his
00:46:43age which is only 20 years old he's got a great reputation for having a level head running clean
00:46:48and damage free and that bodes well a lot of these young guns come in and they want to prove their
00:46:53metal their speed and then the process end up getting in trouble and lombard seems to have
00:46:58that great combination of everything he's got the speed but he's got the maturity runs very clean and
00:47:02trouble free so uh perhaps a very good future ahead of him peugeot team looking on right now
00:47:09benoit trillier out in front in the audi and it's sebastian borde running in second in the number nine
00:47:16peugeot then alex vertz stefan sarrazin running fourth and right there in fifth albeit a couple of
00:47:23laps off the leaders is the number 10 oraka from huda shonax team that won at sebring and they're going to
00:47:29continue to lurk the entire time just as they did at sebring and of course you never know right now
00:47:35trillier a lap on board a
00:47:42on board with the peugeot and this really gives you a great perspective of how difficult it is to
00:47:46drive at night time here at lemar i mean daytona scott you talk about that that is so used to be a
00:47:51real problem through the infield but now it's so well lit and a great message there from peugeot we
00:47:57wish mike is okay and again we're waiting to hear official confirmation of to mike rockenfella's
00:48:02medical status we do understand through the le mans website that mike has called his parents to
00:48:08give them an update so everything sounds positive but we want to hear officially and we're we'd love
00:48:13to see both he and alan back at the track now these teams fight brutally on the racetrack but we've been
00:48:19there at the end of these events when both peugeot has won and audi has won and each team goes
00:48:25then over to the others hospitality area they celebrate the victory they celebrate the battle
00:48:30they trade team shirts back and forth and they are very very respectful of the battles that they wage
00:48:37out on the racetrack and i think it's great sportsmanship you see that on the peugeot rig down
00:48:42there in their garage area wishing mike rockenfella well it's the same thing i think in all forms of
00:48:48motorsports that i've been involved in whether it's been indycar or nascar uh and now with the grand
00:48:52am series you want to fight hard i mean you don't want these guys to give you anything you want to
00:48:57take and really go up head to head with these guys and at the end of the race if they beat you fair and
00:49:02square then you know what more power to them and and you celebrate uh with them and then you go back
00:49:08to work trying to figure out how to beat them jan cheruz in the number 49 oak racing lmp car with
00:49:12a problem he's on the pits saw the engine cover off and the corvette on pit road as well
00:49:18and this is a real worker i mean those rear wheels weigh about 40 odd pounds so to uh lug those on and
00:49:25off like those guys do there's a lot of time spent in the gym there's a real workout routine for all
00:49:29of the oval the war crew as we call them in terms of a being strong enough and then fit enough to run
00:49:34around for 24 hours doing these multiple pit stops that doesn't really make sense to me here we're just
00:49:38coming off a long yellow and they're changing brakes i don't know if that was happening was that
00:49:43happening live or was that a that's a good question that would uh you'd have to say as a
00:49:48mistaken strategy if you're going to do brake change you definitely want to do that on the yellow which
00:49:51we've had an enormous amount of looking at hug to shanak there he is the man at orica very passionate
00:50:00we saw him last year literally in tears when his car went out in really strong position really battling
00:50:07out with the audis and the perjoes one by one fell by the wayside ultimately lamby lost the car
00:50:13early with a pickup point pulled out of the tub but then subsequently the other two factory
00:50:18peugeots and this car that was entered last year by hug to shanak had a conrad failure and the man was
00:50:24literally in tears then we saw tears of joy this year of course at sebring when they won the 12-hour
00:50:28event back in march here in florida it was deshaunak's peugeot that was the last one standing last year he
00:50:34was peugeot's last hope and as you said a very emotional moment when it failed for the teams they work
00:50:40hard and you got to take these opportunities 35 minutes or so in between pit stops for the diesel
00:50:46powered cars to take a break what was interesting was talking to bruno for me and the technical
00:50:49director at peugeot about that conrad issue he said fortunately we had lamby's car that had the
00:50:54tub issue we had to retire we still had an engine in there that was still operating so they took the
00:50:58engine took it to the diner went through some symptoms were able to really analyze what the real
00:51:03problem was benoit trullier from the pole now leading and with a lap over number nine peugeot
00:51:10of sebastian bordet so the audi the one remaining audi remains very strong in the hands of benoit trullier
00:51:20problems for audi drama throughout we still have 13 hours to go trullier out in front and we are a long
00:51:28long way from the celebrations but well for andrew marriott already seeming to dance a jig down at pit
00:51:35lane we'll be back for more than half a century corvette has been racing at le mans but the company
00:51:44that race driver louis chevrolet co-founded turns 100 years old this fall to commemorate chevrolet's
00:51:50performance heritage and corvette's starring role in it chevrolet is coming out with the 2012 corvette
00:51:56centennial special edition the centennial edition package is available on all corvette models from
00:52:02the grand sport to the z06 and zr1 see how corvette brings the track to the street at youtube.com
00:52:10slash chevrolet back at le mans 125 a.m and so we've got a good four hours until the sky begins to
00:52:21lighten it all in four and a half and change before we see the sun begin to rise so in the
00:52:27darkness here that's the great thing about these endurance races you race when the sun is up when
00:52:31the sun is down and then at daybreak we yet again so the question is another poll question for the viewers
00:52:38at home what is your favorite time of day here at le mans the start dusk night dawn or the finish
00:52:47scott you had an answer duh it's like checkered flag when i'm leaving
00:52:54and there you go that's my favorite it's the stop for everyone else when they think they got a chance
00:52:59you think about racing here at le mans and it's a 24-hour race the sun sunrise is right at 6 a.m
00:53:05and you think in a lot of races you know oh if i could just see the sun
00:53:09i'm there you get to the sunrise here and you've got another what nine hours to go what's crazy to
00:53:15me is the same thing with daytona now they start at three just make it 12 to 12. i like that number
00:53:2112 12. it's easy twice around and it makes it nice it makes it nice when you see the sun come up
00:53:29let's head back down to the pits and andrew
00:53:30yeah i'm here with nick tandy who's a rookie at le mans currently he leads the porsche super cup
00:53:41running alongside grand prix he leads the german porsche carrera cup that's super competitive
00:53:47in the early part of the race nick you were running right with the ferraris and now i think you've got
00:53:51a major problem with the 88 car yeah we've had uh we've had a couple of uh issues during the race
00:54:00uh basically we just had a uh a right front tire problem which has caused a lot of bodywork damage
00:54:07it happened down one of the fastest straights from the mulsang corner and uh it it went with
00:54:14with quite a bang of quite speed but um it's always the way we drive around at you know 100ks for for
00:54:22an hour or so um and then do a couple of laps and get the problem but um i'm sure the guys will get it
00:54:30fixed and we'll get back out there soon nick what about coming to the mall right now you're the most
00:54:34successful driver in a porsche in this the super cup runs alongside grand prix but this is a very
00:54:41different sort of racing yeah it is absolutely for starters the races are a bit longer
00:54:48that's um i mean it's something i've always wanted to do this is the you know the biggest race in the
00:54:53world really and um to be here for my first time with porsche and the velver my approach on guys
00:54:59it's uh it's something you know that uh i've always really dreamt of but um yeah it's a little bit
00:55:06different to the sprint races we do in the in the porsche cups but um it's a different experience i
00:55:12enjoyed the first few laps when everybody was bunched up it was um there was some good hard fighting going
00:55:17on from out from people out there and you know we we got we got stuck in and and had a good good first
00:55:23couple of hours or so but um you know things don't always run your way and uh hopefully this will be
00:55:29our bad luck out of the way that's right well nick tandy is a man you've certainly got to watch for the
00:55:33future very fast porsche driver that's the part that i like i mean the cream always rises to the top
00:55:39i don't care if you're a rookie or if you're just going back there for your you know third or fourth
00:55:43time or your true veteran the cream is always going to rise to the top you see good talent
00:55:48it it's going to shine through no matter what yeah it really is and uh the boy's on his way he's uh
00:55:54managed by france conrad uh who's been a porsche infant for many many years and uh had a good run
00:56:00at daytona with claudio burton's team and as andrew said he's uh doing great things this year
00:56:07you talked about that earlier there's a good chance if you didn't pit right before he
00:56:13going back to green you could have picked up some debris on the track and i hope that's not the
00:56:17case with those guys but anything little like that yep that's the problem i don't you know but
00:56:2224 hours i mean why not why not be safe i mean because we see the potential damage from staying
00:56:28out there with any sort of debris or any cut down tire he said 100k for an hour is actually two hours
00:56:32and 28 minutes he was behind the safety car andrew you have more yeah well just don't add with nick you
00:56:42know there was terrible tragedy uh just a couple of years ago in his family because nick's brother joe
00:56:49was a great race engineer was killed in a road accident and nick has battled on as well as racing for
00:56:56porsche he also runs the uh family formula ford team as well which is very successful in the uk and
00:57:02they've all the tandy family have come from a short oval background writing racing little banger type
00:57:08cars on short oval so it's a very interesting story definitely a man to watch though you see the 68 the
00:57:15ford gt of robertson racing it's like they've done a driver change and they're doing their laps i think
00:57:21that would look like david murray's helmet yeah i think in the car andrea robertson done the stint
00:57:27before so doing a great job keeping the nose clean it's not easy around this place learning it for the
00:57:33first time and particularly at night scott it's uh there's a steep learning curve first time here at
00:57:37le mans there is a steep learning curve and you got to come there absolutely with respect and if you
00:57:43don't and you can also got me or touched on this a little earlier you also have to have the ability
00:57:49not only to drive a car but also be aware of what's going on around you with other cars
00:57:53and and the closing speeds and potentially unfortunately some of the incidents we've seen
00:57:58well nighttime this seems to be when the gremlins come out the 49 on pit road with some problems
00:58:03also understand the crone racing ferrari has had some issues as well jamie
00:58:11it certainly does we were hearing reports that he was stopped out on the track it's michaeli
00:58:16arugulo behind the wheel and i just spoke with the team and they said unfortunately they think that
00:58:21their day is done they believe they did lose the motor not allowed to change it even if they could it
00:58:25would take five hours so it wouldn't really be worth it but that team has worked so hard just to even
00:58:30be here at le mans they don't even have 15 team members you think about all of the big budgets and
00:58:35everything to go into running this race back those that group of hard hard workers do everything
00:58:41they possibly can even their team doctors vincenzo sean mcquin helping out everybody in the paddock
00:58:46right now the number two audi has come to a stop on pit lane they are not going to do a driver change
00:58:53just fuel looks like i don't see any tires out right now cleaning off the windshield cleaning off
00:58:59the headlights making sure everything is ready to go because it is getting very dark outside they do
00:59:05have tires out but it doesn't look like they're going to take them fuel still going in and he's
00:59:12going to fire it up and get back out on track and that is disappointing for tracy crone and his team
00:59:17you know jamie talking about a small group of people working very hard they won the gtm class at sebring
00:59:24and they were so excited about coming here with their own program this year disappointing and that ferrari
00:59:30430 has been basically bulletproof over the last couple of years so surprising to hear of an engine
00:59:35malady there and a big disappointment because they're currently second in the ilmc championship
00:59:41on the back of that win at sebring and a run at spa so that'll be a big disappointment to jeff hazel
00:59:46team manager david brown who engineers of course and uh all of the group particularly tracy's had so
00:59:51much success here over the years tracy crone and uh his regular partner nick and uh michaeli rugelow
00:59:58i know there's been times especially this year
