00:00:00that that mistake has no respect for the quality either of the vehicle or indeed of the drivers
00:00:06a number have indeed found the gravel but most safely through it good to know so the 98 car
00:00:14has come in Pedro Lamy is on board is he staying there let's have a look it's just bottles by the
00:00:21looks of things no driver change unless we join it late though there we are a great battle between
00:00:30himself and Ollie Gavin out front as also the 95 Corvette is being attended to as you can see the
00:00:4374 I beg your pardon that is Ollie Gavin has also come in looks like it's for a new set of slicks
00:00:50yeah line of stern he's confident enough to stay with those tires I imagine he picked up quite a bit
00:00:55of debris when he went off just a few moments ago had to take an entire lap because it was
00:01:00just as he headed towards the Dunlop bridge and away he goes happy enough leaves a big slick stripe
00:01:06as he exits but yeah it's as you were between these two
00:01:11back on track and just over 20 or just under 21 and a half hours remaining
00:01:20Corvette swapping places and where we catch up with the Viper not quite had the pace that we'd thought
00:01:26Jeremy the Viper or hope for us well you know I think they're playing it fairly conservatively for
00:01:32the first time here they didn't really expect to be running up at the front but I don't think that
00:01:37would be a fair uh you know expectation to be running up at the front but you know that they want to
00:01:44they want to get through the 24 hours that's their main goal uh out of here you know they're not going for the
00:01:48championship they're just here to learn pick up pick up data pick up as much information as they can to come back
00:01:52stronger next year I mean they've done made amazing progress it was only what I think less than a year ago this
00:01:58car ran for the first time uh they ran uh two or three uh American Le Mans series races last year did a
00:02:04huge amount of work over the winter and then came back at Sebring and you know after qualifying Sebring
00:02:09they weren't you know they'd made some gains but they they weren't right up at the front of the field
00:02:13until race day and then they were at the front of the field they're running absolutely magnificently
00:02:17then Dominic Farnbach could put the car on the pole at Long Beach so perhaps oh no problem for number
00:02:23seven car it is uh don't know if it's an incident or whether it's just ground or just ground or hold I
00:02:28think well there we are that's not what we want to see running so well as well Nico Lapierre on
00:02:33board well they had some problems during the first hour of the race and now they've got another
00:02:38problem as well it would seem well it looks like he's trying to get it restarted uh lights keep flashing
00:02:43sector a bit better
00:02:52he has no engine i've lost the engine he says and silence is the response what a shame because
00:02:59that car was going so well Nico Lapierre beats at the side he's managed to restart it i don't know
00:03:05whether it is an electrical issue it's anyone's guess but we think that it's something management
00:03:11yeah clearly an electrical issue of some sort because he's clearly got power now uh and it
00:03:16looked like he had more than electric power too so let's have a look here with a replay as he comes
00:03:22into the chicane behind one of the deputy del pierro cars and coming out of the corner no drive
00:03:33yeah it sounds like some sort of an electrical issue you can hear the engine still turning
00:03:37still spinning there and obviously um here he is back at speed again so he's obviously been told to
00:03:42shut it off and probably to reboot or reset the system and the ecu and turn it back on again but
00:03:48that doesn't bode well does it for the next uh 21 and a half hours very unfortunate sadly not because
00:03:54they've been running so quick and uh indeed uh doing the stints that we had hoped uh 12 laps is what
00:04:00they've been managing alan mcnish meanwhile brings the number two car onto pit lane
00:04:05just watching the eight uh toyota as well sail by uh looking tidy no problems here comes the two car
00:04:14right now alan very feistily combative even with his own teammates at the beginning of the race
00:04:21um no surprise there i don't think but uh things seem to have quietened down especially as it's
00:04:27saudi's one two and three and indeed uh matching their numbers position on the track as we speak
00:04:32um yeah i think the the uh maybe some of the pressure is already off audi looks like they had
00:04:38a real battle on their hands those first couple of laps of the race but this time uh you know the the
00:04:43lap 34 this is for car number two so imagine 11 laps on this on this stint uh i think that would
00:04:51reflect the fact that he was running a good bit slower than andre lotterer trying to hear the radio
00:04:58communication there unfortunately we have no okay ag6 you catch that ag6 we don't yeah right yeah okay
00:05:08there'll be a code for the drivers to uh reset something on the steering wheel a lot of the sort
00:05:13of programming options they have on the steering wheel of these cars damien fortner yeah of course
00:05:17they've got lots of buttons i mean it's it's really probably akin to a formula one steering wheel if not
00:05:22more um but you can see he stayed out of the pits so obviously they're confident that the ecu or
00:05:27whatever electrical component has reset itself and it's uh back functioning doing what it's supposed
00:05:33to do and they'll probably they might actually even look at something or maybe look at exchanging
00:05:38something perhaps even the steering wheel because they're going to be due a pit stop on the next what
00:05:43three four laps well we've had a couple of ecu issues incidentally um the first of them was with
00:05:49a murphy prototype uh when it came in uh the 48 car um and that was a misreading ecu which
00:05:56was actually flagging up that they had a problem so i think it was an oil pump problem it said
00:06:00and there was no problem with the oil pump yeah it was just uh the reader so um yeah unfortunately
00:06:06um they were tricked by their own trick machinery i think it's like taking a kid to the doctor in
00:06:11those circumstances isn't it they're yeah they get better and then or if they're not better they
00:06:15don't know what's wrong with them and they're very very very difficult to detect a problem like that
00:06:19very wise for a man who's got no children i hope that's not a pendant carlton kirby
00:06:27know that i'm married for a month get on with it here we are now plenty of time for those guys
00:06:33uh the voice of uh damian faulkner who has uh joined us of course with uh liz halliday as our resident
00:06:39drivers liz is uh in pit lane she'll be having a chat with uh the great and the good and in fact
00:06:44they're not so good uh throughout the evening uh we are on twitter don't forget as we ride on board
00:06:50with this uh seven toyota he looks fine now and you you're happy that you've got a question
00:06:56yeah my um 700 plus followers are um
00:07:01growing and someone just owen noonan has asked if i will be here at le mans next year hopefully um
00:07:07maybe even in the booth about doing a good job i've decided we're going to invite him back if his
00:07:10teammate is as good as he says here we go lotter is in uh 11 laps on this stint for andre lotter so
00:07:17even the fact that he was uh pulling away at a prodigious race at the front of the field able to
00:07:22complete uh 11 laps on this stop uh the uh the reason for that is that the first stint of this race of
00:07:29course difficult to get proper fuel numbers because of that extended yellow flag period so they would have
00:07:35played it conservatively then and then for the second stint once again they'll take it a little
00:07:39bit easy particularly since they could see they were pulling away from toyota's at that stage uh and
00:07:44so now uh they they realize they can run in the 11 lap stint and that is very very good news for audi sport
00:07:53just wondering with some of these hybrid cars whether it would allow them uh to attack this second
00:07:58half if you like or the last uh sector of the of the track uh to bring bring them home on emergency if
00:08:04they were really trying to extend their fuel range and just push it to the absolute limit
00:08:08um yeah you don't really push and do anything to limit at this stage in a race too long too far to
00:08:12go but yeah like i say they'll be fairly conservative on the first and as usual number three car comes
00:08:17right in on the same lap as the number one so all three out is running to the same schedule the number
00:08:23one and number three car coming in one lap after the number two carbon all of them managing 11 laps
00:08:29on this stint of fuel well pretty evenly matched and uh just for the time being at least uh the
00:08:37timing screens as well show that uh they're not that far apart um one and a half seconds is what
00:08:43audi need to find they reckon throughout the full distance of the race with uh fuel advantage to uh the
00:08:50petrol driven um toyota uh are they getting it they're getting a lot more than that right now
00:08:56uh and furthermore they've managed to stretch their tanks to 11 laps rather than the 10 that most
00:09:02people thought that they might be able to run to um so uh yeah no advantage very much audi now and
00:09:08you know it's it's uh that was a brilliant early opening stint by the by uh both anthony davidson and
00:09:14nicola lapierre but nicola clearly had some problems uh both in his first and this last one as well
00:09:20when we saw him stopped out there on the mall sunday he hasn't been able to get that car going
00:09:24he lost about a minute and his last flying lap the first line up after the cast ground to a halt
00:09:31was a three minutes 42 which is about six seconds slower than he was going before that yeah um just
00:09:39look at his comparison class leader here excuse me star leader in p2 onto pitlane olivier pla uh handing over
00:09:47that car to uh alex brundle yeah we're saying that uh anti davidson and lotter uh separated by exactly
00:09:55a second um both flying at that point so not quite the second and a half that are you're looking for
00:10:00but uh uh not quite sure whether conditions are indeed just settling into the uh uh the fact that
00:10:06they are in a comfortable position already at the moment albeit uh one three and four because of stops
00:10:12um still to make a third stop and to the davidson and the eight car i doubt it'll be long uh the
00:10:19morgan nissen back out this is that's who yeah yeah you might say this is a sister car in actual fact
00:10:24so they were one two 24 car came in and the sister sister car number 35 car we're looking at right now
00:10:30here is a 24 car car the only way to tell those two apart if you look at the rollover hoops above the
00:10:35driver's head they're pink on more car they're black on the number 35 car but they were running
00:10:42one two before this round of pits off so a fabulous opening a couple of hours or so on this for this
00:10:49race for oak racing that's incredibly detailed information jeremy well research yeah exactly he's
00:10:56a color spotter yeah our friends at uh radio le mans incidentally also here and you can see the wind
00:11:03blowing up a little bit of a gale at that part of the circuit and then well here quite benign uh so
00:11:09yeah there's uh all kinds of different weather in different parts of the course thankfully it's just
00:11:14drying up ever so slightly and the teams are continuing to select slicks at their stops
00:11:22yeah i'd love to know though why the uh toyotas in particular have been uh cutting their pace lately
00:11:28they're running to 3 42s last time around i guess it's you know perhaps out on the back side of
00:11:33the track it's it's a bit more a bit more sprinkly with rain than it is right here in the fortune can
00:11:39where we are sprinkly yes uh we were talking about the fact that the irish have got uh 30 different
00:11:45words for uh rain but so far damon's cut up with the one which is rain three minutes 47 that time
00:11:51for anthony davidson who car number eight is in second place uh about 15 seconds behind andre lotter
00:11:57but andre lotter has already made uh an extra pit stop than the number eight toyota uh we have ollie
00:12:04gavin coming up in just a moment's time i believe liz has found him and uh you're getting a brief look
00:12:10at the fans that make this event what it is phenomenal resilience uh here's ollie gavin
00:12:16oliver gavin you've just gotten out of the number uh sorry 74 74 my goodness what is happening to me
00:12:24the number 74 car uh corvette racing you've had a difficult time in qualifying and practice i think
00:12:30everybody has how are you faring out there now in these difficult conditions well it has been very
00:12:34tough very challenging you know but um it's uh corvette racing has been keeping me informed of all the
00:12:40changes on the track and right our crew chief's been spotting well so we've kind of lost the keeping
00:12:46on top of it i had one moment just before i came in the pits where i nearly ran at the back of pedro
00:12:50lammy in the aston martin i had to take to the gravel uh to miss him um but no contact between the
00:12:56two cars but uh you know toby's down in it and he's having to deal with some very tricky conditions
00:13:01again you know it's raining now here on the front straight uh but it's uh quite nasty to see alan
00:13:06simerson having a nasty accident directly in front of me right at the start of the race he came out
00:13:11of tetra rouge and he just dropped a wheel on the curb of the exit it started to go slightly sideways
00:13:16and he just snapped sharp left straight into the barrier and i knew as soon as he went off and the
00:13:21way that the car was going it was going to be a huge accident and it's really really tough you never
00:13:26want to see anything like that there was a ferrari that was also spinning just in front of the pair
00:13:30of us further up and that may have just distracted him slightly i don't know but it was a very very
00:13:36nasty accident do you feel that was just based on the general conditions because i know a lot of cars
00:13:41some cars went out on slicks some on inter someone wet so um do you think that was just a conditional
00:13:46accident yes it had it had been sprinkling with rain and it was very tricky just coming up through
00:13:51uh you know dunlop chicane down through the essays and we came through tetra rouge and i thought okay
00:13:58it's just a little greasy but it's not too bad but i think that thing that got him was that he got
00:14:02out on the curb there and on the paint and that just got the car sideways enough going to the right
00:14:08but it then snapped back left and he went over to the barrier on the left hand side and i think that
00:14:12the trees are very close there and he might have actually got into the barrier then maybe even into
00:14:17a tree there was i saw as i drove by one time there was quite a lot of marks on one of the trees behind
00:14:23the barrier so i don't know whether that's happened or not but i just hope i hope it's not too bad and
00:14:29it gets well soon well we're still waiting on some information from that team but we'll be sure to
00:14:33let you know as soon as we know something thank you very much uh an absolute nightmare has just occurred
00:14:39jeremy in the gt class four cars involved three on one side of the track one on the other yeah i think
00:14:45as we were talking to oliver gavin there the number 74 car driven now by tommy milner ran off again
00:14:51right there up at the dunlock curve and the two other guys followed him off damien easy to do
00:14:54that isn't it yeah it is very easy to do but i mean obviously it's very greasy there as we've got
00:14:59a a shot of dr ulrich um obviously explaining the um the situation to someone else and having a good
00:15:05old chuckle uh when it's not his cars yeah this is really difficult out there the uh the leaders now
00:15:10lapping uh it's three minutes 47 so you know they're 20 seconds off the times they were running
00:15:16earlier on in this race yeah it's really difficult one of those cars as well uh came back on there and
00:15:22and tagged one of the ones who actually made the uh the dunlap s there but uh very exciting indeed
00:15:29well i'm wondering whether we're going to start getting a a view change in terms of selection of
00:15:34tires uh so far everyone's been taking slicks or trick slicks the uh near slicks that we've been
00:15:40talking about a little bit earlier on uh whether that will change if this rain does become more heavy
00:15:44it's very light as we speak we'll take a break and we'll be back with uh the damien faulkner
00:15:49weather update as to what this rain actually is
00:16:14so
00:16:19so
00:16:21so
00:16:23so
00:16:27so
00:18:33And I don't know whether they're running for wets here, Jeremy.
00:18:35It just doesn't seem that, it doesn't seem wet enough, but Martin Haven was alluding
00:18:41earlier on to the fact that down some of the long straights that we've got here, tyres
00:18:47can just fail to maintain their temperature and it gets even more skittery.
00:18:52In the first sign of rain, usually they're diving into the pits for wets.
00:18:55Yeah, it is very slippery out there.
00:18:57And you're talking there about number 33 car, Ryan Briscoe, who is up into fifth place in
00:19:03P2 and certainly running very well there for Level 5 Motorsports.
00:19:07They've been down, somewhat down the order during practice and qualifying here.
00:19:11But I spoke to Geoff Brown, the engineer, the lead engineer for Level 5 Motorsports, an hour
00:19:16before the start of the race.
00:19:17He said, you know, we don't really know where we are because we've had very little running
00:19:21since we got here.
00:19:22The cars, of course, as we see, number eight car coming onto pit lane, the second place
00:19:26car.
00:19:27Level 5 Motorsports, they've not done much testing with this low downforce package for Le Mans,
00:19:32but they were pretty confident and they're particularly confident in their Michelin tyres
00:19:36as we see the number eight car, Anthony Davidson, making his third pit stop of the day.
00:19:42Well, it doesn't look like he's going anywhere.
00:19:43No, it doesn't.
00:19:44No.
00:19:44Yeah, absolutely.
00:19:46Staying in, Anthony Davidson.
00:19:48Yes, he was quite dismayed by the early running of the car, but, yeah, it settled down.
00:19:53And, in fact, if the intermittent problem, well, it'll have to happen again, for Lapierre,
00:19:59there, reveals itself, then all hope will rest with the likes of Anthony Davidson in this
00:20:05eight car.
00:20:06So, Anthony Davidson, he will say on the same set of tyres there, Anthony Davidson, once
00:20:10again, 12 laps on this stint for the Toyota, so just one more lap than the Audi. That's
00:20:16not going to be enough to make any kind of a significant difference, I believe, as this
00:20:20race unfolds.
00:20:21Yeah, well, they spoke about the Audi having to be at 1.5 seconds per lap faster, I think,
00:20:28if they were able to do, I think it was two laps longer. But, of course, they're not able
00:20:34to do that, as you say. And they're more than 1.5 seconds quicker per lap in any case.
00:20:40By the way, you just talked about the number 71 car having that spin, Kumiko Biachi. He
00:20:46was running, and actually still is running, fifth place in GT. So, the GT car still led by
00:20:52Darren Turner in kind of a 97. Rob Bell in number 99. Aston Martin has got past the third
00:21:00place car of Romain Dumas now. He is driving that car. We're hearing reports of heavy rain
00:21:06out on the Mulsanne Strait.
00:21:09Well, if that's where it is, it's going to scare the pants off them when they get to the
00:21:13bottom of it. A couple of shikains to deal with as well. I'm just wondering whether we're
00:21:17going to see a whole raft of changes fairly shortly. It's going to be a question of who
00:21:20dives first, I suspect. You may need your flippers as well if this carries on.
00:21:25Well, that depends what sort of rain it is. Is it wet rain? Is it dry rain?
00:21:31Misty rain? Irish rain?
00:21:32It's Lotto, McNish, and de Grazie. One, two, and three at the moment. Lapierre and Davidson
00:21:37has just made his stop. In fact, Davidson has three stops, so he's the nearest to the
00:21:41Audi's at the moment. Lapierre at the end of his run and will be coming in fairly shortly.
00:21:47We're just hooking up with Lotto in the one car as we speak.
00:21:53Well, it's been clean running, thank goodness, for some time now, and it's on as even, it seems.
00:22:00I'm also starting to look and see that the Corvettes and the Vipers still having their
00:22:05troubles. This car, the 67 car, has an issue, starting to delaminate at the back, and that
00:22:12does not look nice. Is he going to be able to get all the way, or is he going to start
00:22:16damaging the vehicle?
00:22:17Well, I think it looks like he's in the Porsche curves there, so it looks like he's
00:22:22nearly home anyway, but he wants to get, oh, and there it goes, completely delaminated.
00:22:27So that's probably not bad, actually, because, you know, the risk is that you'll damage a
00:22:34lot of the car, a lot of the bodywork, even the suspension, brake lines and stuff like
00:22:39that. So it is imperative, actually, that he goes slowly enough that he doesn't do that
00:22:45damage, but obviously keeps the pace until he gets back. You see him squirming all over
00:22:50the place. It's really difficult. There's only three wheels on his wagon, so he does
00:22:54want to be careful. He's just very, very close now to the, to the pit entrance.
00:23:00Certainly is, and he's made it. He's limping in. Just look at the back end, chattering, slewing
00:23:05all over the place. The tyres holding on, and so is he. It's a handful in very, very tricky
00:23:14conditions. Joining us in the books, it's guest time. It's Darren Cox from Nissan. He's been
00:23:22a busy boy of late.
00:23:23The global motorsports director for Nissan Motorsports, and Darren Cox, boy, some exciting
00:23:31times for you. We'll come back to you in a minute. First of all, we see the number 67
00:23:36car with a punctured left rear tyre, and you can see Damien Faulkner has caused a little
00:23:41damage to the rear corner as well.
00:23:45Yeah, it just looks like it doesn't look like significant damage, but there's certainly
00:23:49some damage just there on the left rear.
00:23:51Let's get back down to, to the pit lane.
00:23:54Neil Jani from the number 12 Rebellion car. I understand you're waiting at the moment
00:23:58to just decide what tyres are going to go on and when you're going to get into the car,
00:24:02based on these tricky conditions.
00:24:04Yeah, exactly, because we don't know if it will still rain or dry out. Apparently, it
00:24:08seems like there are still some showers coming, and Nick is out on the intermediates, so we'll
00:24:13leave him out, so that hopefully when we do a driver change, we can also go back onto
00:24:17the slicks.
00:24:18Well, so far, it looks like the Rebellion cars are very strong
00:24:21against the fight with Audi and Toyota in these conditions. Are you confident that you
00:24:26can keep pushing them all the way?
00:24:28Well, we just want to be close enough to benefit if something happens, and that's our aim.
00:24:32We know on outright pace, we won't beat them, but just stay close enough to benefit if something
00:24:38happens.
00:24:38Great. We wish you luck. Thank you.
00:24:40Thanks for this holiday with Neil Jani there, as we see the number seven car onto pit lane, 38 laps
00:24:49completed, 39 laps completed. So once again, that is a 12-lap stint for the Toyota. So we see the Audi's
00:24:59making 11-lap stints now, rather than the 10 that we thought and we saw in the first all-green stint in this race.
00:25:06So just one lap difference between those two. Here comes Neil Jani's car.
00:25:10Nick Heidfeld aboard it, coming to make his pit stop, and he is already, well, he's still on the lead lap.
00:25:18He's a couple of minutes behind the overall race leader, Andre Lotterer, who has 51 seconds in hand over
00:25:24Alan McNish in the second of the Audi's car number two. Well, that pit stopping is going on down there
00:25:29at the Rebellion pit. Once again, Darren Cox is with us, the global motorsports director for Nissan.
00:25:34And Darren, very exciting times for you. You are leading the B2 class and looking very strong in that
00:25:44wonderfully competitive category.
00:25:46It's a great category. You know, a few years ago, people were saying Alan B2 wouldn't survive.
00:25:50Look at it now, 22 cars, a great mixture of chassis, 15 of our engines. But the most exciting thing for me
00:25:57is the backgrounds of the drivers you've got out there. You know, you go through a Mike Conway,
00:26:01a Lucas Leur, you know, very different backgrounds to some of the others, a Manassian.
00:26:07You know, it's fantastic to see the driver lineups that you've got there, different backgrounds
00:26:11coming and racing against each other in this fantastic category.
00:26:14Yeah, it is great. And more good, more news from you. Yesterday, you announced your project,
00:26:21the Garage 56 project. Last year, of course, it was the Nissan Delta Wing that took that spot,
00:26:28the 56 garage here at Le Mans for exciting new technologies. This year, it's supposed to be the
00:26:33green GT. That didn't make it. But next year, we know we're going to have another proper
00:26:38Garage 56 entrant.
00:26:40Yeah, I mean, Garage 56 is another example of what this race means. You know, the spirit of Le Mans and
00:26:45the innovation of the ACO, inviting manufacturers and independents to come along and bring a car that's
00:26:51outside of the rules. And of course, this is a time when rules in motorsport becoming more and more
00:26:56restrictive and more and more irrelevant to road car technology. So, you know, we see out there
00:27:01today, whether it be diesel engines, hybrids, V8s, you know, all sorts of configurations of
00:27:07drivetrains, etc. And, you know, really, it's great to see that the spirit of innovation is out
00:27:14there. And Garage 56 is the ultimate spirit of innovation. You can build a car that's completely
00:27:20outside of the rules. And the Carford, tell us a little bit about the Carford XJ. It's going to
00:27:26be designed once again by Ben Bowlby, who's done a lot of exciting designs over the years for various
00:27:31different projects. He, of course, was the instigator of the Delta Wing. And certainly, there's going to
00:27:36be more than a few passing similarities to the initial Delta Wing project.
00:27:41Yeah, Ben's a really great guy. He's got a very similar mindset to our engineers at Nissan. And it was
00:27:47probably, you know, not a surprise that he, in the end, comes to work with us. And he's working
00:27:54on various different projects for us. Because, you know, we are about innovative road cars and
00:27:58race cars. So, it's great to have him on board as part of the engineering team at Nissan.
00:28:03Yeah, we're going to come back to Darren Cox in just a minute. We're getting ready for a break here
00:28:07on Eurosport. We see there the number one car, Andre Lotterer, a handy lead. Three minutes, 36 last
00:28:12time around. We see these changeable conditions, the lap times ebbing and flying as the rain comes.
00:28:17And goes, what, about five minutes ago, we heard about some heavy rain on the Morsand Strait. Well,
00:28:22that seems to have cleared away again now. These are really, really difficult conditions. But,
00:28:26by and large, drivers doing a super job. Glad you're with us here on Eurosport. Don't go away.
00:28:33We're back very shortly.
00:28:47So, thank you.
00:29:06I don't know.
00:29:36I don't know.
00:30:06I don't know.
00:30:36I don't know.
00:31:06Andre Lotter still leads by now, 46 seconds over Alan McNish in car number two, so numbers
00:31:10one, two, and three, the three Audis out at the front of the field.
00:31:14Lucas de Grassi driving car number three.
00:31:16He's about three and a half seconds behind Alan McNish and actually closing, closed last
00:31:20time by almost three seconds.
00:31:22In P2, it's Alex Brundle that leads in the Oak race in car number 24, the Orica Nissan chassis.
00:31:29In second place, teammate Ricardo Gonzalez now at the wheel of the number 35 car.
00:31:33In GT, it is Darren Turner who leads for Aston Martin number 97 over the sister car, the
00:31:40number 99 car with Rob Bell at the wheel in a GTE Am class.
00:31:45Marco Kiyoki leads in car number 61 for AF Corsa, the Ferrari, and Lorenzo Casse in a car number
00:31:5155, also for Ferrari in second place.
00:31:54Patrick Dempsey is at the wheel of the number 77 car, the Actor racer in third place.
00:32:00Darren Cox, the global motorsports director for Nissan, is here.
00:32:03Darren, you guys have made a big thing of doing all sorts of interesting things for the
00:32:11fans.
00:32:11They can really get involved in motor racing, get into the sport and learn more about it.
00:32:17Tell us a little bit about the Nismo fan zone that is down there in the karting centre right
00:32:22here at the track at Le Mans.
00:32:24Well, anyone that's been to Le Mans will tell you that half of the attraction of the race
00:32:29is actually off track, as well as the fantastic pictures you're getting on track here.
00:32:33And certainly when it gets dark, the place takes on an amazing atmosphere.
00:32:39And our brand is about being accessible to people.
00:32:42So what better than trying to give the fans that are here a better experience and some
00:32:46insight into what we're doing?
00:32:48So, yeah, the fan zone you mentioned is something new for this year.
00:32:51We have the Nismo Lab, which again is something new.
00:32:53And basically you can go, if you're at the track, come down and see if you've got what
00:32:58it takes to become a Nismo athlete.
00:32:59We now call our graduates from the GT Academy Nismo athletes.
00:33:03And we've got various tests down there, some of which I wouldn't want to do, to see if
00:33:09you're good enough to become a Nismo athlete.
00:33:11You know, so for example, a brainwave monitor to see how you can concentrate on, you know,
00:33:19how you're driving.
00:33:26And it's, you know, a very interesting opportunity to go down there and you can win things like
00:33:32having helicopter rides and everything else.
00:33:35Sorry, Darren, do they have the Batac machine?
00:33:38The Batac machine's down there.
00:33:40So it's all about having reaction times.
00:33:42It's having brainwaves.
00:33:44How do you react to certain things?
00:33:46And the winner of your group, so five of you go through in a group, the winner of your group
00:33:50gets to drive on the base performance simulator around this circuit, a full professional simulator.
00:33:55And, you know, as well as people winning the chance to go out on circuit tour, so to go
00:34:01around to the first chicane at the Mulsanne, really just to see other parts of the race.
00:34:05And that's what it's all about.
00:34:06You know, a lot of people here that are bored in, maybe aren't motor racing fans, go to the
00:34:10court for hospitality and they watch the race from afar.
00:34:12You miss out on everything about this race.
00:34:14It's so special to be able to go out to the Mulsanne and watch these cars doing what they
00:34:18do.
00:34:19So that's a brilliant initiative, I have to say.
00:34:21I wish I was younger.
00:34:24So do I.
00:34:25And, you know, but, you know, GT Academy, we've been running that for five years.
00:34:28And what we're very happy about is that, you know, the we had two years ago, a young man
00:34:36called Jan Mardenborough, who was here, you know, for the first time as a fan, we brought
00:34:41him here to show him what Le Mans was all about.
00:34:43And two years later, he's here racing the car.
00:34:47He started our car because he was the fastest out of our three drivers in qualifying.
00:34:52And he did a great job.
00:34:52You know, didn't put a wheel wrong.
00:34:54And we're tracking the leaders at the moment.
00:34:56We've got Lucas Ordonez, another winner of our GT Academy in the car.
00:35:00Darren Cox, thanks so much for joining us here.
00:35:02Thanks for all you guys do for the sport.
00:35:04And best of luck for the rest of this race.
00:35:08This is Jeremy Shaw.
00:35:09Damien Faulkner is alongside me.
00:35:11And also Carton Kirby.
00:35:12I think Mark Cole might be stepping in now.
00:35:14I hate to tell you this, but we just got some awful news through that Alan Stevenson has
00:35:21died as a result of that crash at Tetrouge in the early stages of this race.
00:35:26Alan Stevenson, 34 years old, originally from Denmark, has made most of his life in Australia
00:35:33for many, many years.
00:35:34Awful lot of success in all sorts of different categories.
00:35:37He's starting off in Formula 4 in the native of Denmark.
00:35:41He went on to win championships in Australia.
00:35:43He was the Australian GT Championship in 2007.
00:35:47He's had success here in the past.
00:35:49He's had two podium finishes at Le Mans.
00:35:53Just awful news that Alan Stevenson, who was driving the number 95 Aston Martin Garcic,
00:35:58with his countrymen Christopher Nygaard and Christian Paulsen, unfortunately, has died as a result
00:36:04of that accident earlier in this race.
00:36:06That's very, very sad news.
00:36:07You never want to, you know, as a fellow racer, you never want to see that.
00:36:13What can I say?
00:36:14Yeah, I've been around the sport for, you know, over 40 years now, effectively.
00:36:19And I've been incredibly fortunate.
00:36:22When I first started out, Mark Cole, and you were involved for a few years, certainly several
00:36:26years before me, back in those days, it was kind of commonplace that we'd hear awful
00:36:31news like this.
00:36:32And there's another off there.
00:36:33Was that at Mulsanne Corner?
00:36:35Yeah, the yellow flag's down there.
00:36:36I think that's Mulsanne.
00:36:38It's used to happen on a fairly regular basis.
00:36:40But nowadays, as we see the number 36 car, that is the Alpine car of the wheel of that
00:36:48car right now, is shown as Tristan Gomondy, actually, I'm surprised, one of the more
00:36:52experienced drivers in that car.
00:36:53He's put that car into the gravel.
00:36:55We used to have awful news like this on a regular basis back in the day.
00:36:57But there's been so many advances in safety to this sport over the last 40 years.
00:37:02Now it's very much of a rarity.
00:37:03And I've been involved in this sport for 40-odd years.
00:37:06And just in the last 15 years, it really only happened to me twice that I've had to experience
00:37:13this, actually on air when somebody has had a horrendous accident like this.
00:37:20My thoughts go back now to Jeff Krosnoff in the Champ cars and Gonzalo Rodriguez and Greg
00:37:27Moore, of course.
00:37:27But it happens so rarely these days.
00:37:29It's all the more shocking.
00:37:30Yeah.
00:37:31Joe Gartner was the standout one.
00:37:33He's killed in the Kramer Porsche on the Mulsanne straight.
00:37:36I can't quite recall the year at the moment about looking up around 86, 87.
00:37:40But the only fatality since then was on the test day, Sebastian Engelras, who was driving
00:37:46one of those one-piece WMs.
00:37:49Tragically, a young guy who died down at the Porsche Curves.
00:37:53And his father, who was at that time director of Citroen's rally programme, was actually
00:37:59on the Tour de Course.
00:38:00And they had to break the news to him that his son had been killed here.
00:38:04So our thoughts are certainly with everybody at Aston Martin, with the Simonson family
00:38:08and all his friends and fans.
00:38:10Very, very sad day.
00:38:12Yeah, literally all around the world.
00:38:14Because, like I say, he was born here in plenty of early years in Denmark.
00:38:18Still has very strong Danish connections, but also many strong roots in Australia as well.
00:38:23And a really good guy.
00:38:25And I was speaking to young David Ledson's son, who's working on that car.
00:38:31What's David Ledson's son's name?
00:38:32Graham, isn't it?
00:38:33It's Graham.
00:38:33He was working on that car.
00:38:35I saw Graham this morning, and he was saying how much fun it was being working with those
00:38:39guys on that car.
00:38:41You know, the mechanics, the team worked so hard to get these cars ready.
00:38:45And young Graham is a fabulous character.
00:38:47And he was just, he'll be heartbroken, I know, of course.
00:38:51But our thoughts, as you say, Mark, go out to that family and indeed to the entire Aston
00:38:56Martin racing team.
00:38:58They've got four other cars in this race.
00:39:01They're running 1-2 in the pro category at the moment, with Darren Turner ahead of Robert
00:39:07Bell.
00:39:08And the best thing they can do, I think, Damon, is continue, win the race, and dedicate it
00:39:13to him.
00:39:14Yeah, I think so, absolutely.
00:39:15You know, as we see the number 36 there, waddling around, has he got a loose wheel or
00:39:21something?
00:39:21No, he's fine.
00:39:22Yeah, you know, we all know the dangers.
00:39:26And I think we've all sort of seen it before.
00:39:28But as Jeremy has alluded to, you know, it's just, it's thankfully so rare these days.
00:39:34The safety of these cars is phenomenal.
00:39:38But, you know, unfortunately, these things do happen.
00:39:43And yeah, absolutely.
00:39:43You know, our thoughts go to everybody involved.
00:39:45Yeah, we don't know what happened, though.
00:39:46It must have been something freaky.
00:39:47Because, yes, it was a heavy impact.
00:39:49Tetrauge, it was on the, it's kind of a double apex corner nowadays.
00:39:52And in between those two apexes, the car slide out wide.
00:39:55And we've heard and we've seen that Simonson's car got out wide and got a little bit on the
00:40:00outside, on the dirt, on the outside.
00:40:01He lost it there.
00:40:02And a heavy impact on the left-hand side of the wall.
00:40:06Now, we're just hearing there's a stop-and-go penalty for car 71.
00:40:08This goes back about an hour.
00:40:09Tony Verlander was released from the pits right in front of a Porsche.
00:40:13Put the Porsche almost into the wall.
00:40:15And he's just been given a stop-and-go penalty in the number 71 car.
00:40:19Now, how's that going to affect that car?
00:40:20That is running in fifth place at the moment in GT Pro.
00:40:26Kobayashi's on board that car at the moment.
00:40:29So that's going to spoil their race for a while.
00:40:31I'm amazed it's only a stop-and-go, quite frankly, because there's no excuse for waving
00:40:35out a car in front of another one in the pit lane.
00:40:37We saw, I was in the Toyota pit early on in a race when both cars actually had to be held.
00:40:41But, you know, they weren't released until they had clear external pits.
00:40:46Here's a replay of what happened.
00:40:47It was the number 91 car, Jörg Bergmeier.
00:40:50It wasn't Jörg Bergmeier still driving that, was it?
00:40:51It was Mark Lieb at that time.
00:40:53Yeah, Mark Lieb at that time, absolutely.
00:40:54And you can see there that the Ferrari just drove straight out.
00:40:58Porsche, he's on his rev limiter going down the pit lane.
00:41:01Well, he is, yeah, and I think by the looks of that replay, I mean, I spoke about it earlier
00:41:05because I imagined Mark, whoever was driving the Porsche, would have seen him.
00:41:10But I think he probably thought he was going to stay in the second lane.
00:41:13Sure, that's where he should have done.
00:41:14Yeah, so obviously he's paid the price for that.
00:41:18It's not a wide pit lane here at Le Mans, of course.
00:41:20It's not as wide as many other tracks we go to.
00:41:22But still, you know, it's up to his responsibility of the guy leaving the pit lane
00:41:28to clear the cars that are already on the pit lane.
00:41:31And the team, yes, to release him, of course.
00:41:58And then, of course, I think for theες that are already on the pit lane,
00:42:05I think if it's underline license, there's no newミalized Paradise,
00:42:07but still the manger can be done that.
00:42:08But still, it doesn't Entoncesか over it is the only way,
00:42:10that's the best, like, in front of our Brotherhood.
00:42:13Yeah.
00:42:15Oh, my doctor, I really graduated.
00:42:26Ooh, my daughter, I mean, she's a bit like thing.
00:45:02Obviously, he didn't have any drive, but the engine was still going.
00:45:06As we just see, out of pit box here, the number two Audi pitting of McNish,
00:45:11pitting for the, what is this, the fourth time?
00:45:14Fourth stop, yeah, he's done four stints, so presumably we're going to get a driver change now.
00:45:18Alan, box this time. Box this time, full service.
00:45:22Full service.
00:45:23Full service.
00:45:25I assume that's the message to McNish, the fact he's already in the pit lane,
00:45:29and they're saying box this time probably shows there's a slight delay,
00:45:32so they can't tip off the other teams, doesn't it?
00:45:35Yeah, and I'm not even sure if they're running what's called a repeater.
00:45:39I'm not sure what sort of radios they have, but I think there's a delay.
00:45:42Certainly, if there's a track this big, they have to have another or a more stronger signal.
00:45:48I'm not sure if they use what's called a repeater system anyway in the US.
00:45:53Some of the teams use it there for some of the longer or more undulating circuits
00:45:57like, you know, Road America or Laguna Seca or whatever,
00:46:00but there is a delay, so I'm not sure if that's what they use.
00:46:03But anyway, out goes McNish and in climbs.
00:46:11That will be just identifying the helmet, whether it's Duval or Christensen.
00:46:17I think it looks like Duval.
00:46:18Yeah, well, up Duval, of course, the man who has been the fastest man at Le Mans for the last three years.
00:46:26Two fastest laps, 2011, 2012, and then the pole this year.
00:46:31Another slow car.
00:46:32Is it a puncher on the right front?
00:46:36And it's Duval, well spotted.
00:46:38It's not a puncher.
00:46:42This is the 41 car.
00:46:43This is Tom Kimber-Smith on board.
00:46:44And this is the Katerham-Greaves car.
00:46:47Yeah, it's the Katerham-Greaves.
00:46:50It's at the Zytec.
00:46:51It said Tom Kimber-Smith, but they're showing Alexander Rossi on board that Zytec at the moment.
00:46:56Yes, because I think it's his outlap, actually.
00:46:59I think Alexander's just taken over from Tom Kimber-Smith, perhaps.
00:47:03It's shown as the outlap, and that's a show, because that car was running in the top ten in P2.
00:47:10Class still led by the two oak racing cars.
00:47:13Number 24, Alex Brungle, at the wheel of that car that was started so, so impressively by Olivier Pla.
00:47:19Ricardo Gonzalez has taken over the number 35 car, doing a super job there in second place.
00:47:24And in third place now is Ryan Briscoe in that level 5 HPD.
00:47:28Boy, Ryan Briscoe is coming on strong.
00:47:31And also kind of in his toe as well is Mike Conway aboard the number 26 car, the G-Drive car, for a Delta ADR racing.
00:47:39Well, it's just going past that crawling Zytec.
00:47:43And no white flags, Damien.
00:47:45Normally got a white flag for the slow car.
00:47:48Yeah, I don't know.
00:47:49I was just amazed by the incredible speed of that Audi that was coming up, overtaking everything there.
00:47:56Closing speeds are just phenomenal.
00:47:58In comes Andre Lotterer, full service as well, of course.
00:48:01Mark Fischlack, Mark Fischlack, full service.
00:48:03Oh, we beat Lena to it, didn't we?
00:48:05Full service.
00:48:06We did.
00:48:07So we're fast, Laura.
00:48:08We've predicted it.
00:48:09And I bet you the number three will be in this lap as well.
00:48:12Yeah.
00:48:12Well, they've all triple stinted and four stinted.
00:48:15They've all four stinted, in fact.
00:48:16So very, very impressive.
00:48:20So we're what, Jeremy, two hours, 40 minutes into the race.
00:48:25Okay, 40 minutes of that time was under safety cars.
00:48:28But even so, it just shows the longevity of tyres nowadays, doesn't it?
00:48:32And of drivers.
00:48:33Yeah, absolutely right.
00:48:34And we'll see now whether the, I think everybody's going to make them full service this time.
00:48:38I presume the Toyotas as well.
00:48:40The Toyotas have only made three pit stops.
00:48:44But there goes, here comes now the number three car.
00:48:48So they're still on the same scooter as they have been since the beginning of the race.
00:48:52Lap 46, this is for numbers three and number one.
00:48:56The last time they came on to pit lane was lap 35.
00:48:58So for the second stint in a row, 11 laps completed by the Audi R18 e-tron Quattro Trio.
00:49:06All three cars, 11 laps for this stint.
00:49:09We can expect the Toyotas to make their stops.
00:49:12What, not for another, a couple of laps, possibly three.
00:49:16They came in last time on laps 34 and 5, I think it was.
00:49:22Yeah.
00:49:22That's what, exactly what's expected.
00:49:26Damien, while I was away, what was Anthony Davidson's lapage after his first stop?
00:49:30Do you remember the second stop?
00:49:32They were getting, I think we counted 12 laps.
00:49:3512 laps, yeah.
00:49:35Yeah.
00:49:3615 to 27.
00:49:37They're just getting one lap more than the Audi.
00:49:39Yeah, that's what we reckon, 12, didn't it?
00:49:41Carlton said there was a hint they might be able to get 13 if they tried hard enough and stretched it out.
00:49:47Anyway, Michelin Green Challenge, just mentioned that.
00:49:49The top three cars in that, that is the economy run part of the Le Mans 24 hours, if you like.
00:49:54Car number eight is topping that at the moment, Anthony Davidson, that's miles covered for fuel.
00:49:59So it does show Toyota has a fuel edge at the moment.
00:50:02The number three car of Degrassi second and the number one car of Trillier in third place.
00:50:07So Toyota best on fuel, Jeremy.
00:50:08Yeah, well, yeah, because I don't know whether that's, is that real time?
00:50:12Does that take into account what they, because they've made one less pit stop so far.
00:50:17So, you know, it'll be interesting to see how that, whether those numbers equalize after the round of pit stops when they've all done the same number of stops.
00:50:24But you're right that, you know, they are certainly getting better fuel consumption at this stage.
00:50:28And back in the GTM, you've got Marco Ciorci.
00:50:31He's retaken that lead after presumably Wolf Henzer has done his pit stop.
00:50:36Yeah, so ebbs and flows there.
00:50:40I think we saw the Ferraris running first and second.
00:50:46In third place, actually, it was Patrick Dempsey.
00:50:49So actually, Wolf Henzer has moved up to third place ahead of Patrick Dempsey for third place.
00:50:54Third and fourth places in GTM.
00:50:56We think there is a risk of drizzle soon, then keep going, keep going.
00:51:06Is radio communication, sorry, about debris?
00:51:09That was, no, it was about rain to the number seven.
00:51:12Rain, rain.
00:51:12Not toy Oda of Nicklaus Lapierre.
00:51:15So he was told there was a risk of rain very soon, so keep going.
00:51:19It's on our window in the commentary box at the four chicanes, which is at the final corners.
00:51:23So it's coming again.
00:51:24Spots of rain we've had all the way through this race, on and off, sometimes a bit more heavier than others.
00:51:29Never enough to get the track fully wet, but still makes things very, very tricky for the drivers.
00:51:36Has anyone actually put wet tyres on yet in this race?
00:51:38I don't believe so.
00:51:39They've all managed to get through on slick, haven't they?
00:51:41Certainly another leading contender.
00:51:42I'm not sure whether the number 30 HVM status car might have done.
00:51:46I don't know.
00:51:47That's conjecture.
00:51:47It came in and did two pit stops fairly close together, whether it was a puncture or whether they changed tyres.
00:51:52I'm afraid I don't know.
00:51:55I've just been handed an official statement from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest.
00:52:00At 15.09, the number 95 Aston Martin Vantage GTE, driven by Alan Simonsson of Denmark,
00:52:06exited the track at high speed at the Tertruche corner on his fourth lap of the race.
00:52:10Drivers immediately attended on the sea by doctors from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest medical service.
00:52:16In a serious condition, Alan Simonsson was transferred immediately to the circuit medical centre, where he died soon after due to his injuries.
00:52:23Alan Simonsson's family has been informed immediately by David Richards, principal of the Aston Martin racing team.
00:52:29Alan Simonsson, experienced driver, aged 34, had taken part in seven vancatcherer du Moor.
00:52:35This was his seventh start in the Le Mans 24 hours.
00:52:37His teammates in number 95, Carwood's fellow countrymen, Christopher Nygaard and Christian Poulsen.
00:52:42The Aston Martin Vantage GTE wishes to express his great sadness following this incident
00:52:46and extend his deepest condolences to the family and those close to Alan Simonsson.
00:52:51The Aston Martin Vantage GTE will make no further statement, while the exact reasons for the accidents are still being wholly determined.
00:52:57We, of course, add our sympathies as well.
00:53:00A tragic day here at Le Mans.
00:53:04And, of course, we will make no conjecture on that either.
00:53:06I mean, we'll leave that to all the official investigations.
00:53:09Thank you very much for that, Jeremy.
00:53:1154 car we've just seen crawling back onto the track.
00:53:13One of the AF Course customer Ferraris.
00:53:16That's the all-rookie car of Yannick Malagol, Jean-Marc Bachelet and American Howard Blank.
00:53:22I don't know who's on board at the moment.
00:53:24They're just off our screens, aren't they, at 54?
00:53:2654 and 13th in class in GTM.
00:53:30The rain's back, as you can see.
00:53:32This is people watching at the Dunlop Curves and a look at it going under the Dunlop Bridge.
00:53:37Yeah, really tricky out there, Damien.
00:53:39I know you'd much rather be taking part in the race rather than being with us here in the Eurosport booth,
00:53:44but conditions like this?
00:53:45No, no, no. You guys are great.
00:53:47I have to say, no, I'm...
00:53:49Conditions like this, what do you think?
00:53:52Yeah, I mean, it's just something you have to go through, you know.
00:53:54It's part and parcel of what we do.
00:53:56But, you know, it is...
00:53:58It's difficult here.
00:53:59And just getting back to tyre wear there, with the long straights here, the tyres get a chance to cool down.
00:54:05So it's probably not overly excessive on tyre wear, which is why they quadrupled stint.
00:54:12Yeah, we're being told there's gravel all over the track at the exit from Mulsanne Corner.
00:54:17That's been dragged there by that AF course Ferrari.
00:54:21We're going to take a short break.
00:54:22We'll be back after these messages.
00:54:24Stay with us live here on Eurosport.
00:54:26We'll be back after these messages.
00:54:56We'll be back after these messages.
00:55:26We'll be back after these messages.
00:55:56We'll be back after these messages.
00:55:57We'll be back after these messages.
00:55:58Goodbye!
00:56:00Yeah!
00:56:01I don't know.
00:56:31I don't know.
00:57:01I don't know.
00:57:08Back with Eurosport, live at the Le Mans 24 hours.
00:57:11And as you can see, the rain clouds are starting to dump the most rain we've had probably this race this afternoon.
00:57:17The Toyota goes straight on at the Dunlop S's on board that car with, that was Davison.
00:57:25That's Davison, Davison, yeah, sorry, in second place at the moment as we scroll for the pit stops.
00:57:30Both of the Toyotas have both yet to make their fourth stop and get full services.
00:57:34But Anthony just couldn't turn in there.
00:57:35Just absolutely no front grip at all on slicks, Damien.
00:57:38Yeah, you could just see the front tire momentarily locking up as he tried to come off it before it would swap ends.
00:57:46And probably a good save there by Anthony.
00:57:48But yeah, just treacherous conditions up there.
00:57:50We've seen that since the beginning of the race.
00:57:53Lots of people going off approaching the Dunlop curve there.
00:57:56And we've got a number of flags out showing it's wet at various parts of the circuit.
00:58:01The other place is still dry.
00:58:03Yeah, but you know what?
00:58:04In fairness, when there's a few drops, they'll put those flags out to tell people that it's slippy or raining.
00:58:12But, you know, with the cars going at the speeds they're going, the tires at the temperature,
00:58:17it takes quite a bit of rain to make a difference.
00:58:19So just because you see a flag like that, you know, like I said before,
00:58:23it's sort of, it's an instinctive fee that each driver has.
00:58:27And that will tell them when to, when to slow down a bit or whatever.
00:58:32Yeah, that's right.
00:58:33Yeah, I mean, it really is tricky.
00:58:34I was just, last lap around, Mike Conway was super fast.
00:58:38I have just to prove my point.
00:58:40It's just an absolute nightmare to drive with these bloody tires in this condition.
00:58:45It's just so hard.
00:58:49Rain dry, rain dry.
00:58:51I was most impressed.
00:58:53Wow, that was a, that was Anthony Davidson there.
00:59:05Fantastic direct message there, wasn't it?
00:59:08A fantastic insight as to what he's thinking.
00:59:10And it took him so long to relay that message, but it was so crisp and clear.
00:59:14And it just gives you, you know, a fantastic perspective of, you know, where he's sitting and what he's feeling.
00:59:21So obviously he's on the slicks and he would like to have the intermediates because it's wet and dry.
00:59:25Well, he is due for service.
00:59:27And so too is the other car, Nick Lapierre.
00:59:31They're still only on three stops.
00:59:32All three outies have made four stops.
00:59:34So let's just see how that pans out.
00:59:37Here's the two Oak Morgans running together.
00:59:39Having a great afternoon, aren't they?
00:59:42Brundle and Gonzalez running together at the moment.
00:59:45One and two in class.
00:59:46And as Jeremy just pointed out, the Eureka Nissan of Mike Conway putting in a blinding lap a moment to go.
00:59:52Four seconds quicker than these two.
00:59:53That's the sixth place car.
00:59:56Nick Heidfeld has tweaked the left front.
