In Thailand (S2E6), Ed is dropped into mountainous jungle territory in the Golden Triangle during the monsoon’s tail end. He’s exposed and vulnerable — climbing, foraging, and improvising constantly. The rains blur boundaries between survival and disaster. Ed leans hard on resourcefulness and past mistakes to push through.
Expect climbing terrain, slippery slopes, unpredictable water, and dense jungle navigation along with classic survival tactics.

00:00This time on Marooned, I'm heading into Bandit Country.
00:04This is somewhere that is legendary for drugs trafficking.
00:08This is the Golden Triangle in Thailand, a place of extremes.
00:16Home to blood-sucking creatures.
00:18It really is Leech City today.
00:20Right, you're gonna die now.
00:23And one of the toughest places I've ever been.
00:25My feet are now extraordinarily sore.
00:28This one's going to hurt.
00:31I'm Ed Stafford.
00:33I've walked the length of the Amazon and survived on a desert island
00:37with only a camera to film my adventure.
00:41Now, I've set myself a new challenge
00:43to prove I can make it in some of the world's toughest environments.
00:49Using only what I find around me.
00:52I already had a kidney and a bit of dinner.
00:54I'll be left completely alone for ten days with nothing.
00:58Words cannot describe how I feel right now.
01:01No film crew, no food, no water.
01:05The sun is directly overhead. It's boiling hot.
01:07Not even a knife.
01:09Right, come on, Ed. Go and move on.
01:11This time, it's about more than survival.
01:13I want to see if I can thrive.
01:15Yes.
01:16Anywhere.
01:17This is my ride, helicopter coming in.
01:37I'm in Northern Thailand, in a remote region called the Golden Triangle.
01:41This area was once center of the opium trade.
01:47And it's said to be one of the most lawless places in the world.
01:53Even today, there could be smugglers in the forests.
01:56And that's not all.
01:58Poisonous snakes with hemotoxic venom.
02:02Wild pigs roaming free.
02:04And a painful number of creatures out to get me.
02:12From here on, I've got nothing to help me.
02:15No knife.
02:16No matches.
02:17Not even clothes.
02:19Take it again.
02:20Take it again.
02:21Oh, boy.
02:23And the motor fades away.
02:24I wish I could do justice to the feeling when you get dropped off in a remote environment.
02:38Completely alone.
02:39I don't think I will ever be able to fully explain quite how overwhelming that is.
02:46First thing I need to do is set myself up filming wise.
02:49I've got a bag full of camera recording equipment.
02:54I've got to set up my second camera.
02:56Plug in the microphone.
02:58And then I'll be up and running.
03:00This program is all about honesty.
03:02I'm out here on my own.
03:03There is no camera crew to step in.
03:05I have an emergency satellite phone.
03:07I have an emergency medical kit.
03:09But clearly, I'm in an environment that I've never been to before.
03:12The immediate survival priorities are water, shelter, fire, food.
03:19Water is always top of the list.
03:21But where to find it?
03:24I know the mountain in the distance is called Chiang Dao.
03:27But that's where my local knowledge ends.
03:31I can see valleys radiating out from the peak I'm on.
03:35The question is, which one offers the best chance of water?
03:38The problem is, ground drops down this side.
03:43Ground drops down to that side.
03:46Ground drops down towards the mountain.
03:49To avoid getting lost, I'll search a little way down each valley.
03:54If there's no water, I'll come back then try the next valley round.
03:57I'm just going to leave my bag at the base of that tree there and drop down and try and find some water.
04:04My gut instinct, which is never a bad thing to rely on, is saying, go down that way.
04:09I'm heading towards Chiang Dao mountain.
04:13As I descend, I find a worrying scene.
04:15At some point, a fire has come through here.
04:19The earth is very scorched.
04:21This place is dry.
04:23And fires can just sweep through the mountain.
04:25This tree in front of me, looks like it's been struck by lightning.
04:31Which is probably the cause of a lot of these fires out here.
04:34One hundred percent.
04:36That's a lightning strike.
04:38Keep going.
04:39Getting caught by a forest fire is a real worry.
04:43With no shoes, I can't run.
04:46An escape might be impossible.
04:48Keep going down.
04:50Water.
04:52Water.
04:54My mouth is starting to already get very dry.
04:59I have to admit I expected to find water earlier.
05:04I've been descending for an hour, and I'm getting concerned.
05:07Maybe this wasn't the right direction to come.
05:13There's some very thin bamboo.
05:15Bamboo would definitely help me with construction.
05:19And bamboo isn't the only useful resource I can see.
05:23Ha-ha.
05:25Right.
05:27That there, in the very big distance you drop down, are banana leaves.
05:32And banana leaves, for me, are a very good sign.
05:37Banana plants mean food, fluid, and clothes.
05:41Standing at the base.
05:42One of these wonderful banana trees.
05:44Look there.
05:46And a clump of what looks like black bananas.
05:51Ow!
05:52Quite a lot of spiky things around.
05:54I've got nothing to help me get to those bananas, apart from brute force.
06:00Luckily, banana plant stems are soft.
06:04And I know locals use the pulp inside the stem as a water source.
06:08Oh!
06:09You can see the moisture content in that.
06:13Huh?
06:15Calm yourself, Stafford.
06:17It's only fluid.
06:19But that is gorgeous.
06:20It worked.
06:21That is a whole load of bananas.
06:38Uh-oh.
06:40Crunch is never actually a sound that you want to hear.
06:42When you're getting into a banana.
06:46That is disgusting.
06:48How is it possible for a banana to be full of stones?
06:52That's not edible.
06:54Young wild bananas are okay to eat.
06:58Maybe these ones are too old.
06:59A bit gutting, actually.
07:00As much as I make light of it.
07:03A bit gutting.
07:10I don't know whether you could hear that.
07:13But that was the distant rumble of thunder.
07:18Never that reassuring a sound.
07:25When you haven't got a shelter.
07:27You haven't got a shelter.
07:31It's thunder.
07:32And the wind's picked up.
07:34That has just suddenly upped the ante massively.
07:38A big storm on night one and I am exposed.
07:44It's a long hike back up to my kit.
07:47So I won't get a shelter made before dark.
07:52But this banana bark will make good clothing.
07:55It's actually quite good.
07:59It's coming off a big, long chunks.
08:01This will keep me warmer than if I was naked.
08:05Temperatures at night can fall below 15 degrees Celsius.
08:11Got myself a banana tunic.
08:14That's a really good covering.
08:17Okay.
08:19I still haven't found water.
08:22So I'm taking some banana stem as a fluid supply.
08:25And heading back to my camera kit.
08:27I've got nothing and no one to help me.
08:30So I've got to find somewhere protected to ride out the coming storm.
08:33The sky.
08:36We're going to scare each other.
08:38We need to get up and out of here.
08:40Trying to remember my way back at the hill.
08:44Thunder going up around me like fireworks.
08:47I'm sure it was despair.
08:49You can see the lightning retreat.
08:51Thank God.
08:52The wind now is strong.
08:56Bloody hell.
08:58Keep going.
09:00The thunder keeps on threatening.
09:02Daylight is beginning to become an issue.
09:05It's an hour or two from sunset and I'm running out of time to build a shelter.
09:11Come on.
09:13Breaking out of the trees now.
09:17And there's my kit.
09:19I'd be foolish if I didn't think I was going to get hit by quite a big storm.
09:24I'm going to quickly rehydrate from my banana stem.
09:28Then work out where to spend the night.
09:31It is now raining.
09:33It certainly is now raining.
09:38Bloody hell.
09:41That tree just made a distinct crack as if it was about to fall.
09:45It's too exposed up here.
09:47And there are no materials to build even a basic shelter.
09:50I need somewhere more protected.
09:54I'm heading a little way back down the hill where I saw some cover earlier.
09:59This is about as thick as the forest gets here.
10:02This little patch of ground is where I'm going to sleep tonight.
10:05There's lots of leaves.
10:07I'm just going to bury myself in the leaves.
10:08A layer of leaves will trap air and help to insulate me.
10:13Plus, it's quick.
10:17But I'm 1,500 metres up and cold.
10:20If it rains, I'm at serious risk of exposure.
10:23All I can do is tough it out.
10:27I really hope it doesn't rain.
10:29I feel vulnerable after a man.
10:33Not having a roof above my head, I do not like.
10:36Tomorrow, downhill, find water, make a camp, build a shelter.
10:41Right now, I feel vulnerable.
10:45And I don't like it.
10:46I'm Ed Stafford.
10:47I've just spent my first night in the Golden Triangle in Thailand.
10:50Good morning.
10:51It's day two.
10:52It didn't rain.
10:53But that was cold.
10:54That was very cold.
10:55I haven't eaten properly for 24 hours.
10:56And I'm very hungry.
10:57Now, I've got to take whatever I can get.
11:00Round here, that means insects.
11:06I haven't eaten properly for 24 hours.
11:08And I'm very hungry.
11:09Now, I've got to take whatever I can get.
11:13Round here, that means insects.
11:15eaten properly for 24 hours and I'm very hungry now I've got to take whatever I
11:21can get round here that means insects
11:33spit the wings out
11:36breakfast of champions like everything with a big abdomen it tastes creamy aim for the day
11:47water and shelter yesterday's valley was dry today I'm heading a different way to search
12:01for water in the next valley round this time I'm taking my camera kit there's no way I'm coming
12:09back to this exposed hillside for a second cold night the camera equipment is not light
12:20it's now much deeper I'm looking around for anything useful this valley's greener than
12:28yesterday's I hope that means water could be near there are certainly more plants and potential
12:34food I've just bought some Indian gooseberries oh a bit tart oh but refreshing
12:48no warning no trickle trickle a silent little stream look at that and it's flowing
13:05that's gorgeous
13:10I'm just gonna follow this stream downhill until I find an area which is open enough
13:17to use as a campsite this is lush this is wet and moist and green
13:25ah yes space for a camp this is perfect the big expanse of flat area pack off
13:35hindsight of course is telling me why didn't I come down this way yesterday this is great this is
13:44better than I could have imagined got myself a campsite and water thank goodness
13:52but it's not all good news I am just covered in these in sweat bees there's also ants all over my feet
14:04there's one
14:08two
14:14two fat boy leeches
14:17leeches are unpleasant and weird creatures
14:22they bite into flesh and suck the blood of their hosts
14:27eight or nine leeches
14:31it's only just gone breakfast time
14:33now I found my campsite I can build a shelter the only tool I need is a knife
14:41after a lot of searching
14:45I found a small piece of slate like rock in the stream
14:50that really is
14:51a fairly good blade
14:53that I like
14:57got myself a knife
15:00I'm gonna build the framework of my shelter out of one of nature's most versatile materials
15:08bamboo
15:09bamboo
15:10that is exactly what I've been looking for
15:13this is a gold mine
15:15this is a bamboo gold mine
15:20used in the right way
15:22bamboo can be as strong as steel and is a wonder material for making a camp in the jungle
15:27but with only a stone blade it's difficult to cut
15:33bamboo is so tough
15:35it's still used for scaffolding throughout the far east
15:38two hours of soaring and snapping
15:43finally I've got enough stems
15:45now to drag them back to camp
15:49it's only half a kilometer
15:56but going backwards and forwards again and again takes five whole hours of hard graft
16:01my feet are now extraordinarily sore
16:04due to distances covered and due to
16:07due to the spikiness under underfoot
16:09I want to make the most of this amazing material so I'm going large with my shelter
16:16it's quite a grand design for a survival situation Ed but nevermind
16:20frames complete I've got a serious amount of thatching to do as well so it's a big job
16:28slightly running on empty now
16:30my big bamboo should be made
16:33I'm going to go in and end
16:35there's no way
16:35look at that
16:36look at that
16:37that is almost perfect
16:39I want to make the most of this amazing material
16:42so I'm going large with my shelter
16:44it's quite a grand design for a survival situation Ed but nevermind
16:45the frame's complete
16:46I've got a serious amount of thatching to do as well so it's a big job
16:49The Big Bamboo Shelter is not far off finished, it'll keep me dry for tonight, but it's taken a lot of energy, and I'm in pieces.
16:58It will be worth it. It will be worth it.
17:02I really need a drink. I really need a wash as well.
17:07I just want to try to get the sweat and salt and grime off my skin as well, because the sweat beads are driving me mad.
17:15It gets to me. I've got that layer of grimy scum on my skin. I hate it. I hate it.
17:35Plunge in there. Wash all the woes away. That was so good. That was so nice.
17:44I'm gonna hit my sack now. I'm exhausted. Absolutely shattered. Oh my goodness me.
18:02Last night, I had my first proper sleep, and with my shelter mostly complete, today I'm turning to my next survival priority.
18:11Let's get a fire going. Yeah.
18:14I'm scraping some dry bamboo.
18:18That's lovely soft tender. And bone dry as well.
18:23This is gonna be a fire saw. It's an ideal technique for starting fire in the jungle. All you need is bamboo.
18:31Okay. There's a little hole in there. Tiny, tiny little hole. And that is where the ember is gonna come up and through.
18:40There's a smoke. That's good.
18:47Okay. What an end of it.
19:02What an end of it.
19:03What an end of it.
19:04Yes.
19:05Fire.
19:06Oh lovely.
19:07Lovely.
19:08Lovely.
19:09Lovely.
19:10Lovely.
19:11Lovely.
19:12Lovely.
19:13Lovely, lovely, lovely, lovely.
19:14Happy days.
19:15happy days
19:26now I've got fire
19:30I fancy a cup of tea
19:31but first
19:34I need to make a bamboo kettle
19:36this type of
19:44bamboo has closed chambers inside
19:47so it's perfect for holding water
19:50and I'm going to go and fill that up from the river
19:55the water inside stops the bamboo from catching fire
19:59at least for a while
20:01I'm making tea with some ginger root that I found earlier
20:07a hot cup of tea
20:17and the world is right again
20:24I've been here four days now
20:28and I've still not found any edible bananas
20:32I've gathered enough food just by foraging
20:36but the next stage on the journey towards thriving
20:39is to start setting traps
20:41I'm heading to a clearing a little way from my camp
20:46it should be a good area for rodents and birds
20:50so nice just emerging out of the trees
20:56I'm having sun on my face
20:58oh that is so nice
21:00there's lots of little rocks all over the floor
21:07I'm just going to make a simple rock fall trap
21:10in this type of trap
21:13a rock is held up by a small stick
21:15which has been half broken
21:17bait is attached to a chute coming out of the stick
21:20and when something tries to take it
21:22the stick snaps completely
21:23and the rock falls
21:25out
21:28found a little cricket hopping around
21:30so I'm going to stick him on the bait
21:32and that is surely tempting
21:34I'd be very surprised if that little bad boy
21:38did not provide a mouse for me
21:42first bow bronchus is hailing
21:47that is a hailstone
21:49the golden triangle throws everything it's got at me
21:55I'm Ed Stafford
21:59and I'm four days into my mission
22:01to survive on my own
22:03in the Thai jungle
22:04with nothing to help me
22:05got to fire
22:07got to shelter
22:08so far
22:11I've eaten insects and plants
22:12but now I'm craving meat
22:14I saw tadpoles in the pool
22:18where I washed earlier
22:19so I'm going to investigate further
22:22oh yeah
22:41ha ha
22:43in seconds
22:45I got myself a frog for supper
22:51hello mate
22:52cool
22:54alright
22:56okay he's dead now
23:01I'm down
23:03it's gone
23:14I can't believe that
23:15right
23:15next time
23:17I'm not going to be so humane
23:18thank goodness for that
23:40first one's gone
23:42but he's a big boy
23:44right
23:45right
23:45you're going to die now
23:46I'm afraid
23:47it's twitching but it's dead
23:52kebab
23:53he's not running away now
23:54quite happy with that
23:56not a bad first day's hunting
23:57with all these flies around
24:00he's going to go off quickly
24:01so I'm going to
24:02just put him over the fire
24:03and roast him
24:03he looks pretty done now
24:05let's go for the legs first
24:08and that one looks pretty good
24:09wow
24:14oh that's proper meat on that
24:16it's cooked to perfection
24:19that's the first proper bit of protein
24:21and it's tasty
24:23bit of arm
24:24little funnel in
24:28little claw there
24:29that was good
24:33that was really good
24:34I'm halfway through my time here
24:39and I'm doing well
24:41but so far
24:43my rodent traps haven't worked
24:44so I want to try something
24:47a bit more ambitious
24:48I'm going to make a snare
24:51to catch birds
24:52this sapling here
24:55is nice and bendy enough
24:56for me to use
24:57as the spring lever
24:59for my bird trap
25:01very simple noose
25:02the sapling is attached
25:04to the noose
25:05which is spread
25:06around a ring of sticks
25:08perfect bait for birds
25:09a worm
25:10the bait is on a little trigger
25:13if that stick is tugged at
25:15the toggle will release
25:16and because of this little fence
25:19the bird is forced
25:20to put its head over
25:21and it will get
25:22its neck caught in the noose
25:24as the noose flies upwards
25:26that was bound to happen
25:30wasn't it
25:30I'm confident
25:32these bird traps
25:33are going to work
25:33they will work
25:35they will work
25:36they will work
25:36back to camp
25:39back to camp
25:40I got those traps set
25:47in the nick of time
25:48the storm
25:51that has been threatening
25:52since I arrived
25:53five days ago
25:54has finally come
25:55I have to make a call
25:58in the next minute or so
25:59whether to bring the fire
26:00inside and under the shelter
26:01and it's stronger
26:03and I have to come in
26:04yeah it's coming in
26:07absolutely pooping it down now
26:15it's going bonkers
26:19it's hailing
26:20that is a hailstone
26:21I'm in the tropics
26:25and it's hailing
26:26the hailstones are
26:27that big
26:28these hailstones
26:30could do a lot of damage
26:32I'm glad I built
26:34such a strong roof
26:35I tell you what
26:37I'm not moving out of this
26:38shelter
26:38that's for sure
26:39I am not moving an inch
26:41a tropical hailstone
26:43unbelievable
26:44eventually the hail stops
26:50that was a serious storm
26:53and I'm lucky to be in one piece
26:55it wasn't just hail
26:58that was falling
26:59there's a tree
27:01that's just come down
27:03massive tree
27:04that's just flitting that wind
27:05this branch
27:07came down
27:08spiky Riley
27:11that was just like
27:12it's like I was being mortared
27:15it was like I was under attack
27:16by the elements
27:17so it's cool eh
27:19really close call
27:20sometimes
27:22we think somebody's
27:24looking after me
27:25yeah it's quite cold
27:28after that storm
27:29still a bit of a breeze flame
27:31but it's dark
27:32and I haven't checked
27:34my traps tonight
27:35so I'm going to go
27:35and check them
27:36plus the adrenaline's
27:38pumping anyway
27:39so
27:39the last thing I want to do
27:41is go to sleep right now
27:43it's quite hard to see my way
27:51in the dark
27:52and the log trap
27:55is still set
27:56log trap number one
27:59no
28:00nothing
28:01oh
28:03oh my god
28:05let me open this up
28:11for the camera
28:11oh my god
28:15this is mad
28:17I cannot
28:17look at that
28:22we've got supper
28:25we've got supper
28:26after the storm
28:27look at that
28:29it's a mouse
28:31it's also a rat
28:32it's a big old mouse
28:34if it's a mouse
28:35probably is a mouse
28:38not a rat
28:39right
28:41it's cold
28:42but it counts
28:43cook supper
28:44look at that bad boy
28:46he he he
28:47it's too dark
28:50to gut the mouse
28:52really
28:52so it's still got
28:53its intestines
28:55in it
28:55most indigenous tribes
28:57don't gut the animals
28:58that they eat anyway
28:58and I have to admit though
29:01I am eating around
29:02the innards
29:03I'm not going to eat them
29:04but um
29:05let's burn all the
29:07hairs off
29:07first of all
29:09second slap up
29:12dinner in two nights
29:13oh that's nice
29:20that tastes like
29:20liver
29:22could be its lungs
29:24I think
29:26at the end of the day
29:27you're going to have
29:28to crunch through
29:28the whole thing
29:28aren't you
29:29stuff
29:29otherwise I'm never
29:35going to get
29:36all the meat
29:36off it
29:36mmm
29:41yeah that's the way
29:43to do it
29:43tastes good actually
29:45this meat
29:47at the end of the day
29:48that was a sharp flavour
29:56mmm
29:59I think the head
30:01is still on a stick
30:02one sec
30:02one rat
30:09eaten whole
30:10I get rather hungry
30:15on these trips
30:15you know
30:16really is Leet City
30:21today
30:22over the next few days
30:28I settle into life
30:29in the jungle
30:30improving camp
30:32and pushing the
30:33boundaries of bamboo
30:34bushcraft
30:34first I make a water
30:38bottle
30:38cutting a section of
30:40bamboo that's sealed
30:41at both ends
30:42not bad
30:45cut myself
30:46a relatively neat
30:47tube
30:47now
30:48then
30:49I cut the top
30:50off that
30:50I think I might have to
30:53smash this
30:54thing again
30:55in order to
30:55get it sharp enough
30:57sharper edges now
31:03finally I shape the two
31:11pieces so they fit
31:13together perfectly
31:14so water bottle
31:16complete
31:17large aperture
31:22top
31:23it feels
31:24nice and quick
31:25and encouraged by my
31:29success
31:29I build a bamboo
31:31power shower
31:32pretty cool
31:41feel like
31:46I'm winning
31:47I do feel like I'm winning
31:48in a good day
31:51in a good day
31:52no more water bottles
31:54made a shower
31:55had a shower
31:57nice and refreshed
31:59it's not raining
32:00things aren't bad
32:01really I think
32:02things are pretty good
32:04it's day eight
32:07and I'm comfortable
32:08in my jungle camp
32:09but local tribes
32:11wouldn't have stayed
32:12put like this
32:13they were semi-nomadic
32:16moving around the area
32:17to avoid depleting
32:18resources in one place
32:20I think the ultimate
32:23test of whether you
32:25could really really
32:26survive long term
32:28in the mountains of the
32:29golden triangle
32:30is whether you can be
32:31truly nomadic
32:32so I'm going to leave
32:33camp tomorrow morning
32:34and I'm going to go
32:36nomadic
32:36I'm going to go walk about
32:38and test myself
32:44that I really have made it
32:46in this environment
32:46I've already made
32:49nearly everything I need
32:50to go mobile
32:51my water bottle
32:52my fire pit
32:54got my cooking pot
32:56there's just one thing I need
32:59before I can go
33:00a stone blade
33:02I napped the edge
33:05of the first one so much
33:07now it's too small to use
33:09I need a blade
33:11to prepare food
33:12and to cut bamboo
33:13today I need to find
33:16another
33:16one of these stones
33:18which are very very rare
33:19and the first place
33:22to find these rocks
33:23these dense rocks
33:24is in the stream
33:25so I'm just going to follow
33:27the course of the stream
33:28chalky
33:41crumbly
33:41no good
33:43searched the hole
33:44of this river
33:45by my camp
33:46found nothing
33:48I've been at this
33:51for hours
33:51and all I've come up
33:54with is a pile of
33:55soft useless rock
33:56time for a new approach
33:59indigenous people
34:01instinctively know
34:03where to find things
34:04and it's all too easy
34:06to think
34:06that's because
34:08they're from here
34:08and
34:09they spend their whole life
34:11growing up here
34:12and therefore
34:12they would know
34:13wouldn't they
34:14and how can you expect
34:15to know the worst
34:15to know
34:16but we were all
34:17indigenous at one stage
34:18I've been here
34:20for eight days now
34:22sleeping on the floor
34:24living next to this jungle
34:26I'm not emailing
34:28I'm not chatting on the phone
34:30I'm not texting
34:31I am actually in tune
34:33with this forest
34:35it might sound weird
34:37but I'm going to attempt
34:39a form of ancient dowsing
34:41trying to use the energy
34:42of the forest
34:43to find the stone
34:44I need
34:45this technique
34:46isn't logical
34:47but it's worked in the past
34:49when I've been looking
34:50for water
34:51the way this works
34:53is you're just feeling
34:54the pull
34:55of whatever it is
34:57you want to find
34:57I am being pulled
35:00that way
35:00strongly
35:01it's an energetic pull
35:04it can actually sway
35:06physically sway
35:06your body
35:07not even just
35:08an internal feeling
35:09it's this way
35:10it can actually
35:11physically pull
35:12your body
35:13it's a fork in the bath now
35:18that way
35:21100% that way
35:24undeniably
35:25that way
35:27ok I've got the stream
35:29in front of me here
35:30how this works
35:32I do not understand
35:33it's in that area
35:35of stream
35:36and you heard that
35:53as I dragged it
35:53across the road
35:54hear that
35:56that's not dull
35:59that
36:03is
36:04exactly
36:06the material
36:06I need
36:07to make myself
36:08another cutting blade
36:09sorry
36:11I can't even get my words out
36:12I'm utterly blown away
36:14by that
36:14that actually worked
36:17that worked
36:19not only have I found
36:30the type of stone
36:31I'm after
36:31but it's huge
36:33instead of a knife
36:36I'm going to make
36:37an axe
36:38it's an axe
36:44but not as we know it
36:46it'll speed up
36:49shelter building
36:49when I'm on the move
36:50and make me feel
36:52a little more secure
36:53out here
36:53on my own
36:54Ed and his
36:58caveman axe
37:00yeah that would be
37:02damage
37:03that really would do
37:04damage
37:05I use everything
37:09I've learned here
37:10to take jungle living
37:11to the next level
37:12that is utterly
37:15extravagant
37:15Thai curry
37:16chicken
37:18morning
37:24day nine
37:26preparing to go mobile
37:27I feel slightly apprehensive
37:29because I'm leaving my base
37:31and I'm
37:31I'm going nomadic
37:33before I set off
37:36into the unknown
37:37I'm going to check my traps
37:38I need to gather
37:40as much food as I can
37:42if I can live
37:44like indigenous tribes
37:45would have done
37:46by continually moving
37:48to new hunting
37:48and farming grounds
37:49then it'll be the final proof
37:52that I really could
37:53survive here long term
37:54one has gone off
38:00and it's got a bird in it
38:01oh happy days
38:04they've got one
38:08some sort of
38:09wild fowl
38:11essentially it's a wild chicken
38:12isn't it
38:13it just shows that
38:15the longer you wait
38:16the more these traps work
38:17they sort of settle in
38:18and they lose the human scent
38:20it just takes a while
38:23for traps to work
38:24and these bird traps
38:26do work
38:27I'll take this wild chicken
38:33with me
38:34along with a smouldering log
38:36from the fire
38:37I'm set
38:40I've cleared the camp
38:44put the fire out
38:45and it's time to go
38:46I'm heading upwards
38:52if I had more time
38:54I'd keep going
38:55until I found another
38:56resource rich area
38:57but as tomorrow's
38:59my last day
39:00I'll see how far
39:01I can get before dark
39:03as I travel
39:06I'm gathering food
39:07just like indigenous tribes
39:10would have done
39:11there's ginger
39:13oh that's beautiful
39:17nice to see a view
39:19got an eye in a hair man
39:21the kit is heavy
39:33this is as high
39:34as I'm going to get
39:35it's quite exposed
39:37but it looks like
39:38it's going to be
39:38a calm night
39:39this has been worth it
39:41hasn't it
39:41you know
39:43to come up here
39:43mobile
39:44with my water bottle
39:45with my axe
39:47my cooking pot
39:48my chicken
39:49my food
39:50look at me then
39:51I reckon I've got
39:58the ingredients
39:59for a Thai curry
40:00chicken
40:01wild ginger
40:02Indian gooseberries
40:04and bamboo grass
40:05one foot chicken
40:08good amount of meat
40:10that isn't it
40:10I mean it's scrawny
40:11for a chicken
40:12but um
40:12for one of my meals
40:14that is utterly
40:16extravagant
40:17I like that
40:19it's amazing
40:23putting real meat
40:24in this cooking pot
40:25Thai curry
40:28chicken
40:29I don't think
40:31it's doing
40:32tonight
40:32actually
40:32don't
40:33leave it in the fire
40:35any longer
40:36because
40:36fear that it's
40:38going to burn through
40:39this is a feast
40:43it's so good
40:51the wild ginger
40:53just means that
40:54it's
40:55it's like proper food
40:56oh that's a wing
41:00absolutely wonderful
41:01the brains always
41:03taste so good
41:04and the eyeballs
41:07what an amazing
41:09thing to be doing
41:11eating chicken Thai curry
41:14on a hill
41:17in the golden triangle
41:18after ten days
41:19that was quite wonderful
41:22just lying here by the fire
41:27on the last night
41:29thinking
41:29I wouldn't trade
41:31all the hardship
41:32all the elation
41:35all the elation
41:35everything
41:38everything
41:38that this
41:38sort of
41:40escapade
41:41entails
41:42for anything
41:43in the world
41:43and I have
41:47feel like
41:47the luckiest
41:48man alive
41:48I really do
41:50this time
41:51I really do
41:53feel like
41:53I have thrived
41:55absolutely
41:59thrived
42:00I loved it
42:03morning
42:12it's day ten
42:13it's almost
42:16time to go
42:17but in a way
42:19I don't want
42:20to leave this place
42:21I feel like
42:22I'm in harmony
42:23with it now
42:23and it feels good
42:26this is living
42:28to the absolute
42:29extreme
42:30it's nothing
42:32to do with
42:33having to prove
42:35yourself
42:35it's nothing
42:36to do with
42:37having to combat
42:39anything
42:39or beat anything
42:40this is just
42:42life
42:44in Technicolor
42:46life in glorious
42:49Technicolor
42:49but all too soon
42:56the moment
42:57is gone
42:58as the modern
43:01world comes
43:02flying in
43:03that is the sound
43:05of a helicopter
43:06time to go home
43:18time to go home
43:20put some clothes on
43:22Saturday
43:22this has been my most
43:28successful trip yet
43:30I don't just feel
43:32like I've thrived
43:33here
43:33I've actually bonded
43:36with these hills
43:36and valleys
43:37becoming part of the
43:39jungle
43:40and I'll remember my
43:41time here for as long
43:43as I live
43:43I'll see you next time
43:46I'll see you next time
43:48I'll see you next time
