00:00This time on Maroons, I'm stranded in one of Europe's last true wildernesses.
00:07I battle against the bitter cold.
00:14And extreme hunger drives me to extreme measures.
00:21I'm Ed Stafford. I've walked the length of the Amazon
00:28and survived on a desert island with only a camera to film my adventure.
00:34Now, I've set myself a new challenge to prove I can make it
00:39in some of the world's toughest environments.
00:42Oh, my God.
00:44Using only what I find around me.
00:46Well, you had a kidney and a bit of liver.
00:49I'll be left completely alone for ten days with nothing.
00:52Words cannot describe how I feel right now.
00:55No film crew, no food, no water.
00:59The sun is directly overhead. It's boiling hot.
01:01Not even a knife.
01:03Right, come on then. Go and move on.
01:05This time, it's about more than survival.
01:08I want to see if I can thrive anywhere.
01:11The adrenaline is building and building and building and building now.
01:20I just want to get in there.
01:21Get on that helicopter. Get dropped off. Get stuck in.
01:23It's kicking off.
01:25This time, I'm in Romania.
01:29In the remote Carpathian Mountains.
01:32I'm flying deep into an isolated part of ancient forest.
01:38These mountains are incredible.
01:42This is the hunting ground of thousands of ferocious brown bears.
01:46An encounter with one could be deadly.
01:49It will be a challenge filled with danger and extremes of weather.
01:55I'll be battling near freezing temperatures.
01:58To offer at least some protection against the bitter cold,
02:02I've been advised to wear shorts.
02:04I want to see if I can thrive here.
02:10Just like our Stone Age ancestors.
02:15For the next ten days, I'll be completely alone.
02:18Filming everything myself.
02:22Just hear the last drones of the motor disappearing.
02:26And then suddenly, I can hear the insects around me.
02:38As much as this environment is familiar,
02:44I've got nothing to help me survive.
02:46I've got no knife. I've got no food.
02:48I've got no equipment.
02:50All I've got in my bag is the camera kit I need,
02:53as well as a satellite phone and a medical pack,
02:56which I'll only use in an extreme emergency.
03:01Survival priorities. Water is the key one.
03:05I'm up high in the mountains,
03:06and I don't know where there's a reliable source of water.
03:10Even one day without water will impair my judgment
03:12and leave me exhausted.
03:14Just three days without would kill me.
03:17I'm not liking the clouds rolling in at all.
03:21In the space of half an hour,
03:22it's gone from glorious sunshine
03:24to really quite dark clouds forming overhead.
03:39It's not exactly the noise I wanted to hear,
03:41I have to admit, on day one,
03:43when I can feel the spots of rain,
03:45and I haven't even started to build a shelter.
03:47Right, come on then, get a move on.
03:50Okay, I need to get the rain cover zone for the camera.
03:53Oh, crikey.
03:55I'll have to abandon my search for water,
03:58and prioritise shelter.
04:00The temperature here will plummet after sunset,
04:03and I need to be out of the rain.
04:05There's a clear bough, and I just need to pile green spruce boughs on top of it
04:12to try and keep the worst of the rain off,
04:14and I'm just going to snuggle under that
04:16and try and keep warm in the wet.
04:19Luckily, the spruce snaps quite easily,
04:24so it can slide in a thick, thick, thick over the top.
04:27And it's not going to be bomb-proof,
04:29but it is going to keep the worst of the elements off me.
04:32My biggest concern is the cold.
04:37I can preserve valuable body heat
04:40if I can raise myself off the damp forest floor.
04:44Beneath my feet is a sphagnum moss, and a sphagnum moss.
04:49It's extraordinarily squidgy and comfy,
04:52but it's also very, very absorbent.
04:54It is wet, but so is the forest floor.
04:57And hopefully I should be able to lift this in quite big carpets.
05:04That's a beautiful, soft layer.
05:08It'll be dark in a matter of hours.
05:11There isn't much time for this to dry.
05:14It would be nice to have a dry bed, wouldn't it?
05:17Clean to bed on a wet bed is an uncomfortable thought.
05:22I've prioritized shelter above everything else.
05:26And I feel seriously dehydrated.
05:30Haven't yet located any water.
05:33Starting to get that sort of slight little headache.
05:39Almost dizziness.
05:40Not dizzy, but starting to feel the effects
05:43of not having drank any water since this morning.
05:49It's raining again.
05:51I can't go much longer without fluids.
05:53But with no tools, I can't even gather rainwater.
05:58Right now, it's pretty chilly, I have to say.
06:01It really is chilly.
06:03The temperature here can fall as low as five degrees centigrade.
06:08I need to keep moving to stay warm.
06:11I've been walking around my shelter,
06:13not really wanting to get in at the moment.
06:16Not really wanting to stop and lie still.
06:19But I'm going to have to do so.
06:21And try and get to sleep.
06:23And hopefully warm up in one position.
06:26But it really...
06:27The temperature really is time to drop now.
06:33I might have to switch into night vision.
06:39It's a very, very weird concept.
06:42To go to shelter and not want to get in it
06:44because you're too cold and you want to walk around.
06:47But I can't just walk around all night.
06:51Hopefully, my shelter will provide me with some warmth.
06:57The moising floor is...
07:00Damp and cold.
07:03Really damp and cold.
07:05I'm really hoping that tiredness just overtakes me.
07:13And that this shelter reflects enough of my own body heat
07:18to keep me warm tonight.
07:20And I've got a headache across this side of my head.
07:23Which I think is from dehydration.
07:30Uncontrollable shivering is a sign of hypothermia.
07:33If my body temperature falls below 28,
07:36there's probably no way back.
07:39Night one.
07:41Very, very cold.
07:46I battle with the cold.
07:49Just need my body temperature to warm up.
07:51As all my efforts to get warm fail.
07:54Not again!
07:55I don't even want to speak about last night.
08:05I'm glad it was so cold.
08:10Right, I'm gonna get up now and walk around.
08:12Walk around, walk around, walk around, walk around.
08:14It's just all night battling with the cold.
08:22All night just...
08:24It's cold, it's cold.
08:26I can't see it, it's cold.
08:28I've just survived my first night completely alone in the Romanian mountains.
08:34With nothing.
08:35No tools.
08:37No food.
08:38No water.
08:40Today.
08:42Survival priorities.
08:43Drop down.
08:45Find a little stream.
08:46Build a camp.
08:47Make a fire.
08:49If you turn all that by the end of the day,
08:51then day two will be the ultimate success.
08:54I've got no map or compass,
09:01but my best chance of finding water will be lower down the mountain.
09:07As I'm walking, I've got to keep my eyes open for everything that could be useful to me.
09:12And that's a really good find.
09:15These little fruit here are blueberries.
09:17And, um...
09:24That's proper food, isn't it?
09:26Blueberries is proper food.
09:28And look, the bushes are everywhere.
09:30There's not abundant blueberries on them.
09:32But there's enough.
09:36The further I descend, the warmer I should be.
09:43Can you hear that?
09:44Apart from the tweeting of the birds.
09:48There's running water down there.
09:50Can definitely hear a trickle of water.
09:56Oh, a nice stream as well. Look at that.
09:59Perfect.
10:03First drink of water in about 24 hours.
10:14Ah!
10:18That is delicious.
10:22The stream is a great find.
10:24Now I've got a source of water, I can focus on other priorities.
10:29Shelter, obviously close enough to the water, that I can collect water readily.
10:35Let's have a little look around.
10:37The forest has opened up into this.
10:40Huge expanse.
10:41You can see how it's changed into deciduous.
10:45All these leaves above us.
10:49With no tools, I'll have to rely on my bare hands to build a simple shelter using logs and leaf litter.
10:55I've got my structure in place, I just need to now lay wood all the way along that, so that the leaves will sit on it.
11:09If we get a downfall, we need proper thick, thick, thick, thick leaf litter in order to make this completely weathertight.
11:15Beach leaves will provide me with great insulation.
11:18Going on actually surprisingly quickly.
11:21It's quite labour intensive.
11:23It's not heavy work.
11:24I've got, erm, most of the sod still to do.
11:29A couple more loads of leaves.
11:36One monster leaf litter at the shelter.
11:41Mission accomplished.
11:43My shelter should keep me dry, but another cold night without a fire could be dangerous.
11:53I don't have matches or a lighter, so I'll have to make fire by friction.
11:58That will take at least two hours of preparation.
12:01Everything's green at the moment, but I'm having to lift up grass and get the dead grass from underneath it, and that's sort of working.
12:13Sometimes, you look on the ground, and actually, the thing you're after.
12:20Look at that, a bear's nest.
12:23Very dry, tender.
12:27Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
12:31It's beautiful up here, but in hours, this forest will be dark and cold.
12:37I thought I'd left enough time for this this afternoon,
12:41but what with collecting tinder, time is running out today.
12:45Time is really running out today.
12:48I've made fire by friction using a hand drill like this many times before,
12:53but it's always more difficult in the wet.
12:56Should do.
12:58The more friction I create, the better my chances of success.
13:03This here is what I'm after.
13:05It makes it sticky.
13:09What's that?
13:12If you add resin to your hands, it makes them stickier.
13:15If they're stickier, you can put more downward pressure on the hand drill.
13:19If you put downward pressure on the hand drill, you should get an ember.
13:22I need this to work.
13:28I can't bear another cold night.
13:35They have an ember.
13:37No.
13:47It's slightly too damp.
13:49Okay.
13:50Do it again.
13:51No.
13:52Not again!
13:53The tinder must be too wet.
13:54Am I wasting my energy now?
13:56Does this tinder under need to sit?
13:57No.
13:58No.
13:59No.
14:00No.
14:01No.
14:02No.
14:03No.
14:04No.
14:05No.
14:06No.
14:07No.
14:08No.
14:09No.
14:10No.
14:11No.
14:13No.
14:14No.
14:15No.
14:16No.
14:17No.
14:18No.
14:19No.
14:20No.
14:21No.
14:22No.
14:23No.
14:24No.
14:25No.
14:26No.
14:27Come on.
14:28No.
14:29I'm not going to give up.
14:30One last go.
14:32Come on.
14:33No.
14:34No.
14:35Come on, come on, come on.
14:49I had flames.
15:19I gave that my all
15:24Get an ember
15:26You should have fired
15:28I've only got myself to blame
15:33It's preparation
15:34You know
15:38I knew this morning
15:39Before I built the shelter
15:41I should have had the tinder
15:43In the sun drying out
15:45I should have collected it
15:48So that I had more
15:50And it should have been bone, bone dry
15:52It hasn't rained all day
15:54It could be bone dry
15:56If I'd prepared it
15:58I can't believe
16:00I've got another night
16:02Of shivering
16:04I said when I came here
16:11This isn't about survival
16:12This is about thriving
16:13Are you thriving as much
16:17As you thought you should Stafford?
16:18It's not a lack of skill
16:26You've just misprioritized again
16:30You've misprioritized
16:32After another cold night
16:47I'm more determined than ever
16:48To get a fire started
16:50If I'm going to thrive here
16:52I need to prioritize
16:53Morning, it's day three
16:58Come up again into the clearings
17:02Because I'm going to collect
17:05Tender
17:06Tender's been on my mind all night
17:09Not surprisingly
17:11And I've collected a whole hay bale
17:15Fingers crossed
17:18By this afternoon
17:19This will be dry enough
17:20To have another attempt
17:21At fire lighting
17:21Making fire is exhausting
17:26And I need all the energy
17:28I can get
17:28It just doesn't
17:33Contain much calorific value
17:36But I'm really not eating much
17:38At the moment
17:38I just need to put carbohydrates on me
17:46I've seen a plant in the meadow
17:49I can eat
17:50But it's a last resort
17:51Doc's not an ideal route
17:54But if you eat too much of it
17:57You can get
17:58You can get stomachache
18:00But
18:02Is it anything I've identified
18:05Here
18:07Which potentially
18:09Has a significant amount of carbohydrate in it
18:16Okay, here you eat
18:17Like a carrot that's been in the fridge
18:21Too long
18:23Has gone a little bit soft
18:24That you'd throw away
18:27Okay, really bitter
18:31If only I could cook the roots
18:35They'd be more palatable
18:36Just going to climb
18:38And have a look at my
18:41Tender
18:42Probably an hour of sunlight
18:48This grass is dry enough now
18:54Time to go
18:56And try and get a fire going in
18:59Yes
19:13We've got fire
19:19Good stuff
19:25Proper fire
19:27You don't need much to make you happy in life, do you?
19:34Roof above your head
19:35Hot fire
19:37Perhaps the love of a good woman
19:41Luckily, I've got that
19:43Not here
19:45I hasten to act
19:46I can't tell you what this fire does for my morale
19:53I'm just sitting here so content now
19:55I really do feel like
19:57From this moment
19:58I can now start to thrive
20:00My first hot meal of roasted dock roots
20:06Is a step towards being able to live here long term
20:09Still incredibly better
20:13Just
20:15Tasting edible
20:17If I didn't know
20:18The dock root was edible
20:20I wouldn't have eaten it
20:21If you eat too much
20:22You can get a bad stomach
20:24Well
20:25But I haven't got any options at the moment
20:29That
20:30Is my carbohydrate
20:31And that's here to stay
20:33But in no time
20:37I'm in a bad way
20:38I had to dush over there
20:41And have diarrhoea
20:42And then
20:43I went that way to the river
20:44And before I had a chance to wash
20:47I
20:48Had
20:50Dush
20:51I had diarrhoea again
20:52And I've just had it a third time
20:54Collecting firewood
20:55Dole headache
21:00Lethargy
21:01And diarrhoea three times
21:02The diarrhoea has come directly after eating the dock root
21:07It's quite disconcerting
21:08I'm half a day's walk from any help
21:11An illness could spell disaster
21:13Unless I find a different food source
21:16My mission might be in jeopardy
21:18Good morning
21:24It's day four
21:27I felt awful
21:28Like
21:29Really ill
21:30I've barely slept
21:32And my stomach's churning
21:34And I just wonder whether
21:36My stomach is just
21:38Really refusing the dock root
21:40I've given myself
21:42I've given myself ten days
21:42To see if I can thrive here
21:44Using just what I can find in the forest
21:46But I feel weak
21:49And I'm at risk of serious illness
21:51If I can't find another food source
21:53But that could be the least of my worries
21:57It's definitely bear poop
22:00It looks fresh
22:04It really does look fresh
22:05That means there is a bear here
22:09They're sharing the same forest as I am
22:12There are as many as 6,000 bears in these mountains
22:16They stand tall at 2 metres
22:18And weigh up to 300 kilos
22:20That's four times my weight
22:23If I come up against one
22:25I won't stand a chance
22:27I do need to keep my senses about me
22:29I really do need to keep my senses about me
22:32I did
22:42Came down this side of the valley
22:44Went up that side of the valley
22:46I thought it was a dog at first
22:52But it's a deer
22:55It's definitely deer
22:59If I caught a deer
23:01I'd be well on my way
23:03To proving I could live here
23:04Long term
23:05Hunting I think is unrealistic
23:07Quite frankly
23:08Here
23:09To make a bow and arrow
23:11To get accurate enough with it
23:12To get close enough
23:13For things like deer
23:15But trapping is a feasibility
23:17The first thing to decide
23:20Is where to set my trap
23:21I'm searching for obvious signs
23:24Such as deer tracks or droppings
23:26That is deer scat
23:32First couple of hours
23:34I'm obviously
23:34Soaking up all the different bits of information
23:38That's going to potentially help me
23:40It almost looks like a footpath
23:42But there's no humans around here
23:44Along this path here
23:46And down that direction
23:48There's definitely an area where large animals come
23:51And they've made a very distinct path
23:54I'm setting a primitive snare
23:57Strong enough to hold a large animal
23:59It works using a pressure plate made out of twigs
24:05If an animal steps on the spruce root snare
24:09It's triggered
24:09And I've got dinner
24:11Well it works
24:15But I didn't mean to set it off
24:17It's got a few fine leaves
24:20Over the niche
24:23So what the niche is as disguised as possible
24:26Trap set
24:28I can't bank on the trap being successful
24:33I'm hungry
24:34And I need to eat now
24:35So I'm going up hill
24:38And I'm coming out
24:42Into the upland meadow
24:45It's so nice to have
24:47Oh full sun on my back
24:50I can just feel that heat
24:52That is gorgeous
24:56That is absolutely gorgeous
24:59I haven't had a substantial meal for days
25:04So I can't be fussy
25:05Grasshoppers can contain as much protein as beef
25:17And almost three times as much calcium
25:19One
25:23Two
25:26Three
25:28Look at him
25:29He's going on a stick
25:31That's for sure
25:32He's almost worth a kebab on his own
25:34He's been eating kebabs
25:35Oh they look good
25:42They're hot and tasty
25:48It's got a slightly crispy shell
25:50And a smooth inside
25:54And it explodes in a really smooth nice taste in your mouth
25:59And it's just nice and warm
26:01And you've got yourself grasshopper kebabs
26:05I'd love a cup of tea to wash the grasshoppers down
26:09But I don't have any containers to boil water in
26:12The bark of the spruce tree is waterproof
26:16I'm going to experiment and try and make a bowl with it
26:20To stop it leaking
26:23I've made glue from pine resin and charcoal
26:26One bowl
26:29Might not seem like much
26:30But I haven't had anything
26:31To be able to collect liquids
26:33And I've been drinking directly out of the river
26:35And I haven't been able to boil water
26:38Which is quite important
26:39Especially when you're quite partial to a cup of tea
26:42The first exercise is that
26:49I have water
26:51Away from the river
26:53Now we're going to try and boil water
26:56It won't withstand heat from the fire
27:00But with a little bit of lateral thinking
27:02This should work
27:03Ow
27:04You've got hot water
27:07Easy
27:08Right let's take these out
27:10I'm just going to do nettle tip tea
27:15Let it brew a little bit
27:17Tea's on
27:20Oh I can taste the nettles
27:28I'm having my first cup of tea
27:31Little things in life eh
27:36Having a cup of tea
27:39Very important
27:41Very nice
27:45I've been living here
27:51Completely alone for five days
27:53And I'm beginning to feel comfortable
27:55I'm going to go down and have a wash
27:57A bit of charcoal
28:01And grind it up
28:04And then the fibres
28:07Will help get
28:09Into all the teeth
28:11After food
28:20And a decent night's sleep
28:21I feel as good as new
28:23And I've got the energy
28:24And I've got the energy
28:24To check on my trap
28:25No way
28:35No way
28:38That is extraordinary
28:42There's a deer in the trap
28:46Right
28:46I can't believe that
28:50He needs to get in there
28:53Yeah
29:11Yeah
29:15It's dead
29:17I've got a deer
29:21I've got a deer
29:22Yes
29:23My hands are shaking
29:30My hands are shaking
29:32I can't believe
29:33I've got a deer
29:35I've got a deer
29:35That's fantastic
29:37But out here alone
29:45With no weapons to protect myself
29:47I'm nervous about butchering this animal
29:50I'm having a bit of a
29:52A mind spin at the moment
29:54As to what to do first
29:55It's just this bear threat
29:57I'd normally butcher it
29:58In my camp
29:58But
29:59It doesn't
30:00I don't think I'm being over the top
30:03I've seen
30:04Evidence of relatively fresh bear scat
30:08I need to move away
30:11Don't I
30:12Okay
30:12I'm going to be far enough away
30:17From my camp
30:17That the bear won't come to it
30:23I've got a deer on my shoulders
30:26The food
30:28The food
30:29I don't have a knife
30:37But making a crude cutting tool
30:39Shouldn't be too difficult
30:40This is most definitely caught
30:42That
30:44If I shatter with a bit of luck
30:47I might be able to get a cutting tool out
30:48This is one enormous adult male
31:00With a huge amount of meat
31:03Fat
31:04And bone
31:04And a valuable hide
31:08That
31:09Is really cool
31:10And quite the opposite
31:12Really warm
31:14There must be at least 30 kilograms of meat here for me
31:20Heart
31:21Liver
31:22And fine venison joints
31:24That's a leg of meat
31:26That is my first joint
31:31Whole rib and neck
31:33Looking I can eat that?
31:36I think I could
31:37It could be today's meal
31:38Because I'm very hungry
31:40I'm worried that the raw meat will attract bears
31:44So I'm cooking it downwind of my camp
31:47In an underground oven
31:48The pit is now full of rocks
31:52I just need to transfer the fire up here
31:54So
31:54Happy days
31:56We should have a big roaring fire in no time
31:58I know a trick for moving fire
32:02And I've seen just the thing
32:04I need to do it
32:05This stuff here
32:10Is horse's hoof fungus
32:11And
32:12You break it off
32:15And you can use this to transfer fire
32:18And as you put it in the fire
32:20Get it smouldering
32:21And it will keep smouldering
32:22Until I want to make a fire again
32:24See how glowing hot that is
32:30What's quite cool is that
32:34You can hold it by the
32:35Tail of the hoof
32:36Still very much alike
32:40Smoke's coming
32:47The fire heats the stones in the pit below
32:57Creating the perfect oven to cook the venison
33:00All right
33:05Let's get you on
33:07Yeah
33:08Perfect
33:16Okay
33:20Now
33:22I relax
33:23And leave that for three and a half hours
33:25It's a slow cook
33:27An effort
33:31But that meat
33:32It's going to be so nicely cooked
33:34While I wait
33:39I can work on the deer hide
33:41This deer skin
33:43It's lovely
33:44Really lovely
33:45And I wish
33:47It's so soft
33:49I wish I could just wear it now
33:51Because it's cold
33:52But I need to stretch it first
33:55To stop it from shrinking
33:57It's looking really nice
34:03You know
34:03Really nice indeed
34:05It's funny
34:07It's funny isn't it
34:07It's a little thing like
34:08A deer which is a bit of a game changer
34:11I keep feeling like I'm evolving
34:14Making more of a life for myself
34:16Time to see what we've got here
34:28I have to say
34:31I'm so excited
34:32I'm just praying
34:35This is going to have worked
34:37Ow
34:39That is really good
34:54It's cooked well
35:01Yeah
35:02Oh
35:06It's so good
35:07This is better than
35:10Venison
35:11In the finest restaurant
35:13In Paris
35:14Wow
35:15Yes
35:19Just as I thought
35:21I'd got to grips
35:22With this place
35:23That's really good
35:25I've got to warm it up
35:26The weather
35:28Takes a turn
35:29For the worse
35:29Right
35:31Come on then
35:31Go move on
35:32It's worrying
35:34If I can't go out
35:37I've been surviving
35:43In the Romanian mountains
35:44For over a week
35:46The weather has been
35:47My constant enemy
35:48It's got very dark
35:50Very quickly
35:51And that's
35:52Just started to spit
35:53The rain as well
35:54I came here
35:55To prove to myself
35:56That I could thrive
35:57Completely alone
35:58For ten days
35:59I have food
36:01Shelter
36:01Shelter
36:01And water
36:02But if my fire
36:03Goes out now
36:04It'll feel like
36:05A backward step
36:06I'm just going to lay
36:07Bruce
36:08Parties over the top
36:10And then I'd put
36:11The covering for the fire
36:12The rain's coming
36:15So I'm going to have to move
36:16The camera inside
36:17The rain's coming in
36:24The rain's coming in
36:28There's the most basic
36:30Coverings over the fire
36:33It's worrying
36:43I have to say
36:44It's worrying
36:46With any fur of shorts
36:47To be up in the mountains
36:48The fire can't go out
36:50You know
36:52The fire goes out
36:53Because of too much rain
36:54And unless I've got
36:57A dry scrub
36:58Before the end of the day
36:59To try and do
37:00Fire blood friction again
37:01I'm wet and cold
37:04All night
37:05The only place
37:07I can be
37:08Is
37:08Hold it up
37:09In front of the fire
37:10And just spit it out
37:12That's all I can do
37:13This storm is the first
37:16Real test for my shelter
37:17And it's doing the job
37:20Fire's not getting touched
37:22Nor am I
37:22Nor is all my camera equipment
37:25I've done well
37:27I've done well
37:28I'm happy with my progress
37:38My hard work
37:40Is beginning to pay off
37:42This has been drying
37:44For a couple of days now
37:45And it's ready for me
37:49To really work on
37:50And use
37:50It needs a little bit
37:53Of cleaning up
37:53I'm just going to
37:55Scrape the surface
37:56Free it from
37:58Any little bits
37:59Of meat
38:01That are on it
38:01Our stone age ancestors
38:04Lived in these mountains
38:05Like them
38:07I've evolved here too
38:08Making the most
38:10Of the resources
38:10From the forest around me
38:12The one thing
38:14That man needed
38:15In order to
38:15Migrate up into Europe
38:18And in order to
38:19Deal with colder climates
38:20Was
38:21Skins of animals
38:23So suddenly
38:26With this
38:27Made into the most
38:29Rudimentary form of clothing
38:31My life can become comfortable
38:34Cut a head hole
38:37Along here
38:38That is so warm
38:46I really like that
38:50That's really
38:52Really
38:53Really good
38:54I've got a warm top
38:55Yes
38:56I was just sitting here
39:00Munching on my
39:02Renaissance leg
39:03Thinking
39:04You've made your life
39:07Comfortable but
39:08You're not terribly
39:10Refined at the moment
39:11Stafford are you
39:11So I've decided that
39:13Tonight I'm going to have
39:13A little dinner for myself
39:14Last night here
39:16And serve myself
39:17The best foods
39:18That I could
39:19I can possibly muster
39:20For my last home cooked meal
39:25In this camp
39:25I plan to celebrate
39:27In style
39:28I'm well beyond
39:32The survival stage
39:33And I have the time
39:35And energy
39:36To fully exploit
39:37The forest's riches
39:38Because that is quite
39:39An impressive bowl
39:40Of blueberry
39:41I have to say
39:42Wood soil
39:45It's amazing
39:47It's like
39:48The most refreshing
39:50Vegetable
39:51Into this
39:54Birch bark
39:56I'm going to put
39:58Resin
39:59The very finest
40:00Dryest
40:01Pine needles
40:03Oh yeah
40:14Look at that
40:16That
40:20Is a candle
40:22Isn't it
40:23Sun's just going down
40:28Over the hill
40:29Through the trees
40:31The expanse of forest
40:33In front of me
40:34Is breathtaking
40:35It's idyllic
40:38It is absolutely idyllic
40:39My dinner's all ready
40:45I'm going to go
40:46And have it now
40:46Settle down for supper
40:54Wow
40:59Look at this feast
41:02Let's start with
41:03A little finger buffet
41:04Of
41:05Wood soil
41:06With side salad
41:07Amazing
41:09Just as good
41:12As it is
41:13Straight out of the ground
41:13I'm going to
41:15Smear the whole piece
41:17Of venison
41:18In the
41:18Blueberry sauce
41:20The venison
41:26As it was
41:26Was okay
41:27And the blueberry sauce
41:29Are incredible
41:31It very much does
41:34Make you think
41:35What you can achieve
41:36If you come in here
41:38With nothing
41:38You're eating
41:41A three course meal
41:42And the pudding
41:48I've got blueberries
41:49As well
41:50That was a truly
41:57Fantastic meal
41:59I knew I could survive up here
42:05But I didn't know
42:07How comfortable
42:07I could make myself
42:08In the mountains
42:09And I'm so grateful
42:15For everything
42:16That this forest
42:18And these mountains
42:19Have given me
42:20Morning
42:28Time to go home
42:31Time to go home
42:34Goodbye to my little home
42:37Pretty cool home
42:41It was as well
42:42I wanted to prove to myself
42:44That I could thrive here
42:46Using only what I could find
42:47In the forest
42:48And in just ten days
42:50I've done that
42:51Now I'm leaving
42:53I'll head to lower ground
42:55And all being well
42:56I should meet up
42:57With a forest ranger
42:58I'm sure
43:00I could hear the sound
43:01Of a 4x4 motor
43:03Over there
43:03Hopefully it's the ranger
43:07Wow
43:09Hi
43:11Hi
43:12Hello
43:13I very nearly
43:15Didn't make it
43:15Through my first few nights
43:17In the Carpathian mountains
43:18But with determination
43:20I made fire
43:21My shelter
43:22Withstood the elements
43:23And my traps
43:24Provided me
43:25With a feast of venison
43:26It was a success
43:28Absolutely a success
43:30Quite looking forward
43:32To a hop off
43:33Proper cup of tea
43:35And some food
