In Gobi (Season 2, Episode 1), Ed Stafford is dropped into the vast, arid expanses of the Gobi Desert. With blistering daytime heat, freezing nights, very little water, and minimal plant or animal life, Ed’s survival skills are pushed to their limits. He must find or create shade to escape the sun, conserve water, avoid predators, find whatever edible resources exist, and endure the extremes of desert life without tools, food, or rescue. This episode is a fierce study in endurance, resourcefulness, and the human will to survive under ruthless isolation.

00:00This time on Marooned, I tackle an epic mountain climb as I do battle with Mongolia's Gobi Desert.
00:07It's literally sucking all the moisture off my body.
00:11I go five days before my first proper meal.
00:14Out of this world.
00:16Build my home alongside one of the planet's most endangered mammals.
00:20There's tracks here. You see, that changes the whole game.
00:23And call upon my primal instincts in a bid to make it in one of the most isolated spots on Earth.
00:32I feel like a wanton vandal doing this.
00:37I'm Ed Stafford.
00:39I've walked the length of the Amazon and survived on a desert island with only a camera to film my adventure.
00:46Now, I've set myself a new challenge to prove I can make it in some of the world's toughest environments.
00:54Oh, my God.
00:56Using only what I find around me.
00:58I've already had a kidney and a bit of liver.
01:00I'll be left completely alone for ten days with nothing.
01:05Words cannot describe how I feel right now.
01:07No film crew, no food, no water.
01:11The sun is directly overhead. It's boiling hot.
01:14Not even a knife.
01:15Right, come on, Ed. Go and move on.
01:17This time, it's about more than just survival.
01:20I want to see if I can thrive anywhere.
01:23This is probably the most remote location I've ever been sent to on an episode of Maroon.
01:36I'm right in the heart of the Asian landmass.
01:45Making my way towards the border between Mongolia and China.
01:49I've travelled overland non-stop for two days from Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar.
01:57At dawn on day three, after almost 2,000 kilometres of driving, I'm entering the Gobi Desert.
02:08One of the biggest deserts on Earth.
02:17It feels to me like the most barren place on the planet.
02:21It feels to me like the most barren place on the planet.
02:22It feels to me like the most barren place on the planet.
02:25It feels to me like the most barren place on the planet.
02:27OK, thank you, mate.
02:28Thanks, bye-bye.
02:33that's the last i'm gonna see of anyone um for quite some time i don't know why i'm laughing
03:01i always laugh when i'm nervous the sheer expanse of the goby desert out in front of me
03:07is extraordinary utterly daunting i'm in the middle of the goby desert i have no food i have
03:12no water i have no equipment to survive i have no knife i have with me a pair of shorts and i have
03:17with me all the camera equipment that i need to survive um i've got two cameras the one i'm filming
03:23on and also a spare one here got tripods small point of view cameras got an emergency first aid kit
03:35and i've also got a satellite phone to call for help in a major disaster but that's it my mission
03:42as ridiculous it might sound isn't just to survive here in the goby desert it's to thrive
03:49although that does seem somewhat optimistic right now known as the land of eternal blue skies
03:58because it sees so little average rainfall daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees
04:04desert dust storms blast through the open plains at up to 100 kilometers an hour
04:10the wind and heat dry your sweat super quickly massively increasing the risk of dehydration
04:17and although rare both bears and wolves call this desert home so i need to be on my guard
04:25all other survival priorities go out the window right now this is the desert there's one thing
04:32and one thing alone that i need and that's water my feet are on fire ow
04:38that direction just thinking through the absolute basics that direction is a nightmare
04:45i can see for kilometers and kilometers and there's nothing
04:49mountains are the best bet so that's the way i'm gonna go
04:55i'm unlikely to find water on the desert plain but mountains can create rain and if enough falls
05:12sometimes a desert oasis develops
05:14without doubt the overriding aim of today is to get off this plane out of this expanse of
05:24heat
05:25but also because i need to get into those mountains to increase my chances of finding some sort of water
05:36the wind is howling and it's like my lips are feeling chapter ready it's literally sucking all the moisture off my body
06:02and the mountains will hopefully provide some protection from that
06:08i have to use every trick in the book here
06:11and urine can be an early warning sign for dehydration
06:15i usually consume at least three liters of water a day
06:21this heat will dehydrate me quickly which could start to affect my decision making
06:27my urine is still quite um pale it's not too dark which means that's a good sign
06:33i'm not too dehydrated yet
06:35it's hard going underfoot and my progress is slow
06:40but this valley i've entered could offer me a lifeline
06:44this here is a good sign this is a really good sign
06:49um this is a plant that local mongolia's called wild astrink
06:57if i break a bit off
06:59you can see it's got these um big paddy leaves
07:03and um although they're not edible
07:07if you squeeze them
07:09i should be able to get
07:10should be able to get some moisture out of this
07:16yeah
07:23oh it's quite sour but that's fluids
07:28that is definitely fluids yes
07:34mongolians have used this plant to survive when lost in the goby
07:43and it will get me through my first few hours
07:46but i need to find a proper source of water if i'm really going to thrive here
07:50my feet are taking a real battering and not just from the rock and the heat
07:59there's these little sharp bears which are little thorns that are absolutely everywhere
08:06once two or three of my feet i have to stop and take them out so um i decided i need to try and make
08:14myself a pair of shoes there's little vegetation and no animal materials to work with
08:20so i've come to a hard decision i'm going to use my camera bag straps to make some shoes
08:27nomads would traditionally make theirs from processed animal skins
08:31but with no herd of my own this is my only option
08:35all right that might seem ridiculous but um i'm walking absolutely freely over
08:45burrs stones in a survival situation when you haven't got any materials you just have to make do
08:53it's a small triumph but i'm still no closer to finding water
09:04climbing to about 300 meters should give me a better chance of surveying my surroundings
09:18it's all slightly edgy until i've got water it's very very difficult to relax
09:30these mountains are just so brown that's the problem it's just brown hill after brown hill after
09:36brown hill and as i'm coming up and over all of these different ridge lines it's just the same old view
09:42brown brown brown it needs to change
09:56you can see the elevation that i've come up since the plane still absolutely no sign of
10:16any vegetation that might indicate water it's just this green scrubby stuff which is the same
10:22stuff that was out on the plane i'm very very thirsty right now
10:32my mouth is now absolutely parched
10:40it's nearly sunset and i'm shattered i can't climb in the dark and have no choice but to sleep
10:46completely exposed it's far from ideal just a case of roughing it tonight it is just a roughing it
10:54absolutely no materials to light fire and even if it did have the ability to light fire there's no
11:00wood here to burn there's literally nothing to make fire so i'm a little bit out of the wind but bare skin
11:08once you get wind blowing over it gets cold very quickly so i suspect i'm gonna have a little bit of a
11:13chilly night
11:27just need to find myself some water and some food and some shelter and probably make a fire as well
11:36that'll be good good good morning it's uh about seven in the morning 6 55 actually
11:58and i want to get up and get moving i want to make good progress before the heat of the sun arrives
12:09i'm ed stafford and i've just survived my first night in the gobi desert in mongolia
12:15i've yet to find shelter food or make a fire three of my four key survival priorities but it's the four
12:22that's really worrying me more than anything more than any other thing i need to get some water
12:32i might have made the wrong decision to come so high
12:34if i don't find water soon the searing mongolian sun could send my core temperature rocketing
12:54and that is a sight for sore eyes
13:04oh my god look right over there on the far side this far lip is much darker that is my best chance
13:20of water and it has not come a moment too soon i can tell you so i need to get down this not insignificant
13:28mounds inside and um being careful not to slip in my little flip-flops and um get over to the other
13:36side that valley
13:37that is a game changer that changes absolutely everything with this valley and those trees
13:47and the vegetation that massively increases my chance of finding water
13:56there has to be water here
13:57the greenery means water and yet this place is still littered with the remains of animals
14:08that should be able to survive
14:15that's the pelvis pelvic bone of a camel
14:20just shows doesn't it how harsh this environment is
14:22but finds like this can be useful
14:30i can see immediately that this could be good for digging with
14:34um even finding a fire i'm gonna take this with me this is a tool that i could use for many things
14:41if this oasis does harbor water then it's the right kind of habitat for the goby bear
14:53these weeds are exactly where bears could could um hide if they're around here and so i need to be a bit
15:00cautious about going in here very cautious in fact
15:03the goby bear is thought to be the most endangered on the planet some estimates suggest there are fewer
15:10than 50 left they belong to the same species as brown or grizzly bears they're omnivorous and will eat
15:18whatever they can but being so rare i'm risking entering the reeds to look for water as my body's crying out for fluids
15:33i need to be careful with bears but i'm not going to be paranoid i've not seen any evidence of bears but
15:44banging my camel bone should keep any bears away
15:47i can feel that the ground is a bit more moist below my feet look at that look at that
16:06that is water that is water
16:27some things in life are beyond words finding water in the goby desert is beyond words oh my
16:36god
16:50that's better than fire
16:55oh my god that is good
16:58they look like they've been excavated that wasn't a human who excavated that that would be a bear
17:11so i need to make a lot of noise and actually as much as possible i think i need to stay out of this
17:17grass and up on the open rocky areas
17:20and the wet earth from this bear scrape offers another essential survival solution
17:28my very own factor 15. oh amazing water and sunscreen probably actually two of the most important things in the desert
17:39i need this at least in the first few days before i get a basic covering
17:47there's um
17:59bloody hell
18:00there's tracks here and they're not just that is bear scout that is definitely bear scout
18:14it's as if the bear has actually put its foot in the same footprints each time i'm sitting right on a bear track
18:26but you see that changes the whole game i'm not even i'm not even sure whether i would have gone
18:34through that long grass had i known that there was a bear and especially a bear that's inhabiting so
18:39close to here
18:42if there is a bear in that vegetation i need to stay out of it or on the very very edges of it
18:49to collect water that's actually that's actually quite scary
18:58i've got water now and there's firewood from fallen trees here but i can't camp so close to the bears
19:05the mud offers me some protection from the sun but i really need to find somewhere safe to shelter
19:11i was thinking if i literally climb up a bit a little bit into the
19:18into these mountains um i can see an area which is shaded and that's gonna be a big one i'm on hot days
19:25this will work definitely oh that's so much cooler
19:38that is a room with a view perfect
19:42i've got water i've got shelter of sorts now for something to keep me warm in the surprisingly
19:57chilly desert nights what i need to do now is gather all the different materials that i need in order to
20:02make a fire need a hand drill i need a hearth board i need firewood i need some tinder and i need a tiny
20:10fine little tinder bundle as well so i'm gonna gather all these things over the next hour or two hours
20:15come back here and um fingers crossed
20:28okay okay i've got an ember
20:45fire fire
20:47fire
20:55fire fire fire
21:00thank goodness
21:04from here life can start to get more comfortable
21:17my fire will keep me warm this evening
21:20but this is the second night in a row
21:22that I'm going to bed on an empty stomach.
21:37Good morning.
21:39Sun's just coming up over the mountains.
21:41I'm going to go for a bit of a walk while it's still cool.
21:52I'm just going to keep my eyes peeled.
21:55Just walking slowly and scouring the ground
21:59for any insects or...
22:05..evidence of small rodents or anything like that.
22:09It's got a nice little burrow down there.
22:13It must be kind of a very small rodent,
22:15like a ground squirrel, I think.
22:20But one, two, three...
22:24It's actually got an interconnected path on the surface, too.
22:29These holes are definitely occupied with the same animals.
22:32They're interconnected, without a shadow of doubt.
22:35I reckon smoking them, I reckon smoking them
22:38is how to get whatever lives in these holes out.
22:43I'm blocking most of the holes in this colony,
22:46then making a fire over the remaining hole.
22:49The smoke from the fire should be drawn through the burrows
22:52and hopefully asphyxiate whatever's inside.
22:56After about an hour, I'll dig into the burrows
22:59and, fingers crossed,
23:00should bag myself the ingredients for a rodent roast.
23:04I want there to be lunch behind one of those burrows.
23:07I really do.
23:08Good night.
23:24Okay.
23:26I've excavated every hole.
23:27it's a hot morning's work to no avail i think it was my methodology i think i need more wind in
23:37order to to draw the smoke into the holes and i think that's how they're going to get flushed out
23:43and i think i need to be able to see smoke coming out of the other hole but um quite a lot of work
23:48for uh absolutely no payoff i'm in mongolia's gobi desert and although i found shelter lit fire
24:01and have limitless water from a desert oasis i haven't eaten for two days and i'm already losing
24:07weight i failed in my efforts to smoke out ground squirrels and haven't found any edible plants yet
24:14somewhat desperate times call for slightly different desperate measures but um in terms of
24:23immediate food and i do need calories inside me um the only thing i've seen so far is this uh
24:31camel skeleton if i smash into the big weight-bearing bone that should have bone marrow inside
24:41no joy sadly these are dried up and empty
24:51i haven't actually eaten anything and i can feel it i can really feel it
24:59i'm risking heading back into the reeds again where there could be bears in the hunt for edible plants
25:08this plant here with the slightly wavy leaves it's called a sugar plant and um if i can get at the root
25:18with this then um it's got a sugar root which is a bit like licorice
25:23that's licorice that's strong
25:38like the old-fashioned liquid sticks you used to get
25:46that is good
25:49that is properly like eating
25:53let's get some more
25:55the root's natural sugars give me a few calories and act as a mild appetite suppressant
26:01it's really tasty
26:03okay it's all starting starting to come together now but it's good
26:11look at that
26:24has it got any holes in it
26:28needs a wash but um that's a cooking pot
26:36this is just the boost i need
26:43and it's not my only lucky find
26:46after all good things often come in threes
26:49these are what the bear's eating
26:55there's loads of them
26:58absolutely loads of them
27:01having not reacted to the first few
27:05i make the call that they're safe to eat
27:07food
27:13that's called food that is
27:16they're sweet
27:27they're juicy
27:28i'm not surprised the bears eat them
27:32they are amazing
27:34today's good
27:40i'm liking today
27:42can't really eat any more berries
27:46i think now the best thing to do is to head back to the cave
27:48the sun is pretty much
27:49at its um
27:51maximum height
27:52and it's hot hot hot
27:53so i'm gonna get back into my shady bit
28:03and with my licorice root
28:04i'm gonna have a cup of tea
28:06combining the sugar root
28:09and the berries
28:10should make an amazing cup of tea
28:12and give me a real boost
28:13sometimes i think i have the best job in the world
28:26to come to the middle of the gobi desert
28:28and make a cup of tea
28:30which is licorice and blackcurrant flavor
28:32that tastes extraordinary
28:38just amazing
28:40buoyed by this success
28:48i'm making a bold decision
28:50in this exposed environment
28:53where summers are sweltering
28:55and winters bitterly cold
28:57i need a shelter that's more than just a scrape
29:00on a mountainside
29:01so i'm building myself a rock gare
29:04my version of a traditional mongolian dwelling
29:07i'm exhausted
29:21and with the amount of calories i've heard today
29:23i would say i'm in calorie deficit by
29:25i don't know
29:27four thousand something stupid like that
29:31knock it on the head
29:35good day's work
29:37i've just built half a house
29:43on a couple of cups of berries
29:45and i'm really feeling the need for protein
29:49basically
29:50i need to get some meat inside me
29:52i really do
29:53the relative call of the morning
30:10could be my best time
30:12to scavenge
30:12a cold-blooded breakfast
30:14that's a lizard
30:27these reptiles don't really get moving
30:30until they've warmed themselves up in the sun
30:32making them surprisingly easy prey
30:35that's a lizard and a half
30:37that is
30:37number three
30:48got him
30:53lizard number four
30:57a four lizard kebab
31:04i suspect that this meal barely broke one hundred
31:34calories
31:35and i usually take in at least three thousand calories a day
31:38but any nutrients passing through my system
31:41is better than none
31:43no way
31:46i just noticed the movement underneath this rock
31:51there's a hedgehog that was um
31:54i don't know if you can see him
31:57oh he's hitting at me
31:58never killed a hedgehog before
32:03but that's food
32:06that's the first proper food isn't it
32:09i haven't cooked a hedgehog before
32:19and i'm not quite sure what to do with it
32:22the best way i can think of cooking this is to
32:25make a little underground oven
32:27a tiny little underground oven
32:28that's only big enough for a hedgehog
32:30put him in and then slow cook that meat
32:32if i make a little bed of rocks
32:35make a fire on it
32:39superheat the rocks
32:40and then pop the hedgehog in
32:47put some of that wild ass drink plant
32:49which is um
32:50you know got loads of water in it
32:52to keep it moist inside
32:53and then put rocks on top
32:54and cover it in earth
32:55and that
32:56will be a perfect
32:58way of
32:59slow cooking this meat
33:00i'm actually really excited
33:09right the moment of truth
33:12the spine seems to fall out very easily
33:24the meat is rich
33:41and soft
33:42the fats are
33:45extraordinarily
33:47decadent
33:50wow
33:51that is amazing
33:56the spine
33:58look at that
33:59the spine just pulled straight out of the meat
34:00the spine
34:02amazing
34:09kidneys
34:10amazing
34:11out of this world
34:15a feast
34:19a perfectly cooked
34:21veritable feast
34:25plate clean
34:32this is just the kick i need
34:35to tackle my last days in the gobi
34:37to prove to myself that i'm really thriving
34:40i want to finish my house
34:41and master a traditional mongolian survival technique
34:45i've been in mongolia's gobi desert for over a week now
34:53i struggled to find water at first
34:55but eventually discovered an oasis
34:57i had no trouble making fire
35:01and after a slow start
35:03i'm now eating well
35:05my final survival requirement
35:08a shelter
35:09is almost complete
35:10it's not mobile
35:17like a traditional gear
35:18but this solid structure
35:20which has actually taken me
35:21almost four days to complete
35:23provides shelter from the sun and wind
35:25and
35:26if i was to stay longer
35:27would offer sanctuary
35:29from the fierce gobi winters
35:30okay
35:35entrance is up around the back
35:38got my little
35:40fire in here
35:42smoldering away
35:43i've got my window
35:45once the roof's on
35:48my gear will be perfect
35:49but something's still niggling me
35:52i'm eating well
35:53but i need a strategy
35:55to source a regular supply of meat
35:57to really thrive
35:58smoking out
36:00those
36:01rodents
36:02i think
36:03it's going to work
36:05it's windy today
36:06it's really windy
36:07and i think it's just going to be enough wind to draw the smoke down into the holes
36:15and into the burrows
36:18to asphyxiate the rodents
36:21i failed at this when i first arrived in the gobi
36:26but i want to give it one last go
36:29i'm targeting a different set of burrows
36:36this time i'm focusing on the bank of an old dried up river
36:40my strategy is the same as i deployed before
36:47but i've learned from my mistakes
36:50and i'm sure the geography of these burrows will help me out
36:53i'm making the fire at the lowest point of the colony
37:00the wind passing across the top of the bank should hopefully draw the smoke through
37:06it's right across the whole bank it's coming out all of the holes
37:15this is absolutely perfect
37:18while i'm waiting for the smoke to do its business
37:28i'm using my last dregs of energy to finish my house
37:32i love walking up the hill with big lumps of wood
37:38sounds a bit daft but it makes me feel like a man
37:43it makes me feel so male to be building my own house
37:47and dragging materials up a hill
37:49and i don't know
37:50it's just all of the things that make me satisfied
37:54and make me grin
37:55and i love it
37:57absolutely love it
37:58it's the difference between
38:13sheltering behind a stone wall
38:15and living in a house
38:17and now i'm living in a house
38:19very very very
38:21cool
38:22it feels so different with these
38:25pillars above my hair
38:28this is a proper sheltered
38:36shaded home now
38:37i'm very very happy with that
38:40now if my smoking's worked
38:43i'll be able to recoup some of the calories that i've used building
38:46hold on
39:01oh my god
39:07i've got one
39:11i've got one
39:13i've actually got one
39:15deep down i never thought this would work
39:20but it did
39:21look at that baby
39:23number two
39:34no there is one
39:36no way
39:37is it alive
39:39is it alive
39:40i'm sure that just twitched
39:42no it's nice day
39:43three
39:45it works
39:48it actually
39:49works
39:50one
39:53two
39:54three
39:56i think
39:58because that's such a bounty
39:59i'm gonna have another underground oven
40:02i'm gonna slow cook these
40:04the name goby desert is almost mystical it conjures up so much in terms of dry and barren and remote and if i'm honest with you i thought it was going to be impossible to actually thrive here i thought i would be able to survive
40:21at the end of the day for this period of time even if i ate nothing and just cowered under a rock for this period of time i could have survived but well beyond that by finding this oasis
40:33it's like finding the key to unlock the secret of the goby desert and this is how people survived it's not going out into the middle of the plane and scratching a living
40:45it's strategically picking oasis and traveling from oasis to oasis
40:51like the nomads used to do traditionally hundreds and thousands of years ago
40:55it's not by brute force and ignorance it's by wisdom experience and knowing where your oasis are
41:02and that is how you live in the goby desert
41:06there is a little bit of me that would like to be stuck here for longer
41:19it seems as though it is abundant enough for me to live comfortably here
41:24by adapting to my environment instead of fighting against it i've satisfied my four main survival priorities
41:33finding water making fire and shelter and catching food
41:39morning
41:42this is the final day
41:46and i'm going home
41:49goodbye
41:56goodbye
41:57goodbye
41:58goodbye
41:59goodbye house
42:05it's a very cool house
42:09that one
42:09one of my best
42:11i find this trip extraordinary because it stretches me it takes me outside my comfort zone
42:19in every single new location i have to learn new skills
42:23and i have to adapt my own knowledge to get by
42:27and i think
42:28that by doing that i'm staying alive basically i'm allowing myself to continue to grow and if i stayed at home
42:36where i got myself a job which didn't stretch me didn't stretch my abilities didn't push me outside
42:42my comfort zone to make me work hard then i wouldn't be growing would i i would just be stagnating
42:50but i'm not i'm here in the middle of the goby desert and i've put myself through fairly harsh
42:57few days and once come out the other side and prove to myself that i didn't just survive here
43:03i most definitely thrived
43:07how are you
43:15let's go
