00:00Hello! Hello everybody!
00:03Good evening!
00:05You are so welcome to this show.
00:07Yes, Autumn is here in like a misty September morning.
00:10I'm back.
00:11Cool, grey and just a little bit damp.
00:14Anyway, we've got a great line-up for our first show of the season.
00:17Look over there, singing for us later, it's the fabulous Ray!
00:23Love Ray!
00:24She'll be performing her new single, Where Is My Husband?
00:27But more to the point, where are my guests?
00:30Let's get them on!
00:31First off, we love them as the France Offing Ditter in Grantchester
00:35and we love to hate them as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley.
00:38Now he brings us the epic succession drama, House of Guinness.
00:41It's our good friend, James Norton!
00:47There he is!
00:49Hello, so many. Nice to meet you.
00:52There he is!
00:53Jamie Norton!
00:54This Oscar-winning actor and writer swaggered into our screens
00:58in Days of Confused, won our hearts in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
01:02and was out of this world in Interstellar.
01:05His latest book, Poems and Prayers, is already a Sunday Times bestseller,
01:08while he returns to our screens in a heroic true story, The Lost Bus.
01:13It is a warm welcome back to Matthew McConaughey!
01:19Oh! Here he comes!
01:21Hello, Sonny.
01:23Really good to see you.
01:24There you go!
01:25Yeah!
01:26That's Matthew McConaughey!
01:28Yeah!
01:29And we've got two stars from the new sports drama, The Smashing Machine.
01:35She made her mark in The Devil Wears Prada, thrilled us in A Quiet Place,
01:39and was Oscar-nominated for a performance in the global hit Oppenheimer.
01:43It's Emily Blunt, everybody!
01:45Oh!
01:46So shiny!
01:47So shimmery!
01:48Show business!
01:49So nice to see you!
01:50And as The Rock, he conquered the wrestling world before turning action movie star with
02:03roles in it's like Jumanji, Moana, and the Fast and Furious franchise.
02:07Now, earning rave reviews for his performance as champion wrestler Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine,
02:12it's the mighty Dwayne Johnson!
02:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:18Come here, buddy.
02:19Hello, how are you doing?
02:20How are you doing?
02:21I'm great.
02:22Lovely to see you.
02:23I'm great.
02:24Lovely to see you.
02:25Oh!
02:28Hey!
02:29Welcome along.
02:30What a couch.
02:31Sit down, sit down, sit down.
02:32Lovely.
02:34Welcome along.
02:35Thank you very much for being here.
02:36Lovely to see you all.
02:37Cheers!
02:38Cheers!
02:39For a show back.
02:40Cheers!
02:41Cheers!
02:42Cheers!
02:43Cheers!
02:44Cheers!
02:45Yeah.
02:46If you're wondering, tequila!
02:48Now, some of you know it...
02:50James, I've got to ask, are you alright because you injured yourself?
02:53Are you alright because you don't know anyone?
02:55Well...
02:56I feel like I know you.
02:59I know you.
03:00Yeah.
03:01And you've met the others backstage.
03:02I have.
03:03We had a lovely time, we've discussed tequila and other things.
03:05This is the thing that's on now King and Conqueror which is on BBC one on Sunday nights. Yes. I fell off a horse
03:16Yeah, I fell off horse and I broke my collarbone now in Iceland
03:20Now I was thinking oh that must be terrible to fall off a horse quite a distance
03:24And then I saw a picture of you with the horse and you are taller than yes
03:30Surely a pony
03:32Okay, yeah, yeah, so Iceland have a protective order on their horses
03:36You cannot import a horse because they have this kind of gene pool and it doesn't it can't be polluted
03:40And so we we having committed to shoot the whole thing and I said I was a producer on the show as well
03:44So I we were tasked with finding the biggest Icelandic ponies we could find and they were that was the biggest we could find
03:51Even though it was it was that small. I still broke my collarbone from falling from that great height. So yeah
03:57It happened at the very beginning of all the stunt sequences. That's fun. Yeah start still
04:02So if you have one of those scenes where you might get injured
04:04It's a good thing to schedule those at the end of the show
04:07Yeah, right
04:09Yeah, yeah
04:11Yeah, well producers producers will do that
04:14They'll put the big stand
04:15Wait, but he's producing
04:16He is the producer
04:17I learn a lot
04:19I learn a lot
04:20But also looking at that I'm thinking Dwayne never do an historical epic in Iceland because that pony would not survive
04:31Does a regular horse make a noise when you get on it?
04:34Like does it just go
04:36Oh
04:38Yeah, why?
04:39Because there's a lot of muscle mass there
04:41I know, I mean that
04:43A horse would be going, oh Jesus, look at this
04:45Oh my god
04:46It groans, it groans, yeah
04:47Many things groan when I get on it
04:49Yes, yes, yes
04:50I'm writing that down
04:52I'm writing that down
04:54I'm writing that down
04:56Thank you
04:58All right
05:00Let's get on with our first film tonight
05:04Dwayne and Emily are together in The Smashing Machine
05:07It's in cinemas from the 3rd of October
05:09And here's just a little taste of what to expect
05:12Yeah, Don, can you take this picture for us?
05:14Yeah
05:15What are you thinking at the beginning of the fight?
05:17It's simple
05:19Am I going to hurt him before he hurts me?
05:21If there was a lie
05:26I will show you how
05:29This is Grand Prix to crown the greatest fighter in the world
05:36He has come back from the brink
05:39Let's see if he can pull out a victory over Mark Coleman
05:45Have you spoken to either about finding such a good friend
05:47For a life-changing amount of money?
05:51I just need you to let me in
05:54Always about you
05:55Everything is about you
06:01Let's fucking go
06:09Extra man
06:11I love you
06:16So good
06:17Thank you man
06:18Thank you
06:19Thank you
06:20Thank you brother
06:22It is phenomenal
06:24It's a true story
06:25Mark Kerr
06:26He was sort of the first star to come out of the MMA UFC world
06:30He was, yeah
06:31For a lot of you who don't know him
06:32And a lot of people don't know him
06:33Mark Kerr was the first
06:34He was one of the pioneers of
06:36There he is right there
06:37Of MMA
06:38And he was
06:39At one time
06:40He was the greatest fighter on the planet
06:42Heavyweight fighter
06:43And at that time
06:44There were no rules
06:45No regulations
06:46And
06:47MMA was different
06:48And there was no infrastructure around it
06:50There was no financial planning
06:52There was just fighters
06:54And
06:55Mark fought his way to the top
06:57And
06:58He
06:59And he struggled
07:00And he struggled like a lot of fighters do
07:02Unfortunately though
07:03He struggled under pressure
07:04And
07:05The pressure in many ways got to him
07:06There was addiction involved
07:07And he wound up overdosing twice
07:09And he's lucky to be alive
07:10But he's here today
07:11And
07:12Not here in the audience
07:13But he is alive
07:14Ladies and gentlemen
07:15But he is with us today
07:18And he had this
07:19Unbelievable life
07:20And
07:21He had this
07:22Volcanic relationship
07:23With his
07:24Girlfriend
07:25Who eventually became his wife
07:26And they have a beautiful son named Bryce
07:28So
07:29It was
07:30It was really the role of a lifetime
07:31And
07:32So Emily tell us about Dawn
07:33Yeah
07:34I mean she's an extraordinary person
07:36You know
07:37And I
07:38I found her
07:39When I spoke to her
07:40Sort of simultaneously heartbreaking
07:41And fierce
07:42And
07:43I think it is a very
07:45Complex
07:46Relationship
07:47To be in
07:48When you're
07:49Um
07:50With a very dedicated athlete
07:52Whose life is on the line constantly
07:54Yeah
07:55Through his own addiction
07:56Through actually being in the ring
07:57And they did have this rather hazardous
08:00Relationship
08:01But
08:02I think the movie is less about
08:04You know
08:05It's set to the backdrop of this
08:07Nineties machismo
08:08But it's so about vulnerability
08:10And the brokenness
08:11And like how you never really know
08:12What's going on in someone's life
08:13You know
08:14Yeah
08:15And the image of invincibility
08:16Is not really the truth
08:17You know
08:18And we've got to talk about
08:19The Venice Film Festival
08:20Because you took
08:21Actual Mark Kerr with you
08:22Yeah
08:23So I mean
08:24Obviously emotional to watch it
08:25But to watch it with him
08:26There he is
08:27To watch it with him
08:28That was the first time he'd seen it right?
08:30It was the first time he'd seen it with an audience
08:32So we get to the Venice Film Festival
08:34Which we're there for competition
08:35And we're sitting there
08:36And watching it
08:37I sat next to Mark
08:38Mark's a big guy
08:39And I could feel him
08:41And he's shaking
08:42He's shaking the entire movie
08:44Especially the fight scenes
08:45With him and his girlfriend
08:46Who eventually became his wife Dawn
08:48He's shaking
08:49Every once in a while
08:50I reach over and grab his knee
08:51And towards the end of the movie
08:53Where we have the big scene
08:55Yeah
08:56With Emily and I
08:57Don't ruin it
08:58I won't ruin it
08:59Don't over pitch
09:00So anyway
09:04You'll never guess what happens
09:06And then
09:08He is really shaking
09:10And crying
09:11And then I look over
09:12And Benny Safdie's holding his hand
09:14And
09:15You know
09:16In Venice Film Festival
09:17It's very ceremonial
09:18Right?
09:19As we know
09:20And it means a lot
09:21Films mean a lot
09:22To people in Venice
09:23And at the Venice Film Festival
09:24And before the credits came up
09:28The audience erupts
09:29And they give us a 15 and a half minute standing ovation
09:33And Mark Kerr
09:35Is sobbing
09:37Which makes us all cry
09:38Yeah
09:39Benny as well
09:40And it was just beautiful
09:41We've got a little bit of footage of the ovation
09:44And I say
09:45It goes
09:46I mean it's incredible
09:47Look at me
09:48By the way
09:49Yes
09:50Let's wait till this is over
09:51So I could embarrass you
09:52Because this is
09:53I know
09:54Look at your face
09:55Beside yourself
09:56Yes
09:57And Mark Kerr's beside me
09:58That's Mark
09:59So there I am
10:00Right?
10:01I'm
10:02Very emotional
10:03House lights come on
10:04Before they're expected
10:05I'm crying
10:06And I'm trying to wipe my tears away
10:07To try and still stay cool
10:09And this one is like
10:10Can you believe
10:11Can you believe
10:12That we did that thing
10:13Whatever the fucking joke was
10:14You can see
10:15Hey what are you talking about
10:16You can see in the clip
10:17That he's crying
10:18And I went
10:19Do you remember on Jungle Cruise
10:20When you said you never cried?
10:21I'm in a moment
10:23I'm in a moment
10:25I'm in a moment
10:26It's like the British thing
10:28No I think it's the British thing
10:29Like where
10:30It's like
10:31It's a long time
10:32For people to be clapping
10:33And I started to get embarrassed
10:34Yeah
10:35So I started making jokes
10:36Because I was like
10:37Oh God
10:38This is so much
10:39Yes
10:40To remain kind of humble and grateful
10:41For 15 minutes
10:42Is quite hard
10:43Yeah it's hard
10:44Yes
10:45Thank you so much
10:46And here's the thing
10:47You know just watching
10:48The trailer there
10:49You know that idea
10:50Of Dwayne Johnson
10:51Disappearing into any role
10:53You kind of think
10:54How can you transform
10:55But you do
10:56What
10:57What
10:58And it's not just
10:59The physical thing
11:00Because it's obviously this hair
11:01But other things went on
11:02It was
11:03About 22 prosthetics
11:04We had Kazuhiro
11:05Who's our Oscar winning
11:06Prosthetic artist
11:08And he helped me transform
11:09There was also
11:10Vocal transformation too
11:11But
11:12The idea I think
11:13Of transforming for me
11:15Was something that
11:16You know
11:17I didn't know that
11:18I was
11:19I didn't know that
11:20That was for me
11:21And I wanted to do that
11:22Because a lot of times
11:23In the movies that I've made
11:24In the past
11:25The bigger movies
11:26They're big and they're fun
11:27And I've liked them
11:28From Jumanji to Moana
11:30And I'll go back to those
11:32But there was something
11:33About this opportunity
11:34Where there was a little
11:36There was a voice
11:37Behind my rib cage
11:38That was just telling me
11:39Right?
11:40So like
11:41It's like
11:42And I'd share this with Emily
11:43For years
11:44Like it's just
11:45It's gnawing at my gut
11:46To do more
11:47And challenge myself
11:48And grow
11:49And do something
11:50Where I'm not
11:51Chasing box office
11:53But I'm doing it for me
11:54Yeah
11:55And it wound up being
11:56The most greatest
11:57Most gratifying thing
11:58And I've said this before
12:00And I mean it
12:01Smash the Machine
12:02Changed my life
12:03Well you so pulled it off
12:04Thank you very much
12:05You really did
12:06It really is phenomenal
12:07And Matthew
12:08I'm interested because
12:09You had a kind of
12:10Similar career pivot
12:11To what Dwayne's doing now
12:13Where you had this
12:14Incredibly successful career
12:15With rom-coms
12:16And you went
12:17No I'm gonna search out
12:19Different sorts of parts
12:20More meaningful parts
12:21How hard was it
12:22To turn your back
12:23On that
12:24So
12:25Similar to what Dwayne said
12:26I had that
12:274 a.m.
12:28In my solitude
12:29On my own
12:30Truth that hit me
12:31That lands like a butterfly
12:33And strikes like a lightning bolt
12:34At the same time
12:35That truth that you go
12:36Okay
12:37Tomorrow when the sun comes up
12:38And I'm back in the masses
12:39And all the world's coming at me
12:40And all those offers
12:41I need to remember this truth
12:42Now
12:43I've been trying to get dramas
12:45And was even offering
12:46Huge pay cuts
12:47And they're like
12:48No stay in your lane McConaughey
12:49You're the rom-com guy
12:50You got that down
12:51Mind you I enjoyed him
12:52But I was wanting to do
12:53Something different
12:54Because I couldn't do
12:55What I wanted to do
12:56I said no more
12:57No more rom-coms
12:58Called the agent
12:59Said let the town know
13:00It's not going to happen
13:01I went to Texas
13:02Camilla's pregnant
13:03On the ranch
13:04Quiet down there
13:05Camilla says to me
13:06Look you don't know how long
13:07It's going to be dry
13:08How long you're going to
13:09Not go with work
13:10This could go on
13:11But this is non-negotiable
13:12We're not going back
13:13I was like not going back
13:14Now
13:15A year goes by
13:16Nothing
13:17Nothing
13:18Nothing
13:19I call my agent
13:20He goes Matthew
13:21I haven't even heard your name
13:22In six months
13:23I just wrote myself
13:24A one way ticket out of Hollywood
13:25I start to think about
13:26Other vocations
13:27School teacher
13:28Wildlife guide
13:29Maybe I'll go back
13:30To law school
13:31Alright
13:32Eighteen months go by
13:33I really think I've done it
13:35I'm out
13:36I get this romantic action comedy
13:39It comes with an eight million dollar offer
13:41I read it
13:42I pass
13:43I say no thank you
13:44Comes back with a ten million dollar offer
13:45I said no thank you
13:46Comes back with a twelve million dollar offer
13:48I said no thank you
13:49It comes back with a fourteen point five million dollar offer
13:52I said
13:53Let me read that thing
13:55Yay
13:57Same words as the eight million dollar offer
13:59But it was better
14:00It was funnier
14:01I could see myself
14:02This could work
14:03Right
14:04But I ultimately said no
14:05That must be so hard to say no
14:07It was
14:08But
14:09Saying no to it
14:10I think
14:11Sent
14:12A little invisible message to Hollywood
14:14Oh McConaughey's not bluffing
14:15We were talking about not flinching
14:16Yes
14:18Oh he's playing offense
14:19He's not just doing nothing
14:20He's playing
14:21He's
14:22He's
14:23He's on to something
14:24And
14:25Twenty months
14:26Two months after I turned that down
14:28The offers came in
14:29That I was looking for
14:30And they came in in droves
14:32It went Killer Joe
14:33Mud
14:34The True Detective
14:35Dallas Buyers
14:36Magic Mike
14:37They came in
14:38Everything I was looking for
14:39And I would not have
14:40They would not have come in
14:41If I wouldn't have unbranded
14:42For that twenty months
14:43Yes
14:44Alright
14:45You didn't have to unbrand
14:46You had enough steam going
14:47I can make whatever choice I want
14:49And I'm going to make this happen over here
14:51That was a time for me
14:52Where I had to unbrand
14:53And it took twenty months
14:54But
14:55Then I was doing
14:56And all of a sudden my work was challenging
14:57The vitality I liked
14:58I was like there we go
14:59Yeah
15:00So cool
15:01Absolutely
15:02And
15:03And
15:04And
15:05And
15:06And
15:07There's one thing that they
15:08Every actor that wants to be successful
15:09But then you don't want to be typecast
15:10And
15:11James
15:12You know you were
15:13So good
15:14As
15:15Tommy Lee Royce
15:16In Happy Valley
15:17You had that kind of psychotic
15:19Baddest
15:20There you go
15:21Thank you
15:22Thank you
15:23Thank you
15:24Thank you
15:25Like
15:26Were you just offered lots of
15:27Psycho villains after that
15:28Or
15:29Or
15:30Yeah
15:31Yeah
15:32I seem to get offered roles
15:33Where they present as nice
15:35And kind of civil
15:36And then underneath they have a heart of stone
15:38And I don't know what that says about me
15:39But
15:40Yeah
15:41I mean I haven't
15:42I haven't had to rebrand
15:43Which is lovely
15:44I've you know
15:45Been lucky
15:46I've been able to kind of twist and turns
15:47And I think that's the way you keep learning
15:48And keep it fresh
15:49That's what every actor wants
15:50And
15:51Yeah
15:52I mean the villains are also really interesting
15:54Like the one I'm playing right now
15:55Is a beast
15:56Yes
15:57So you know
15:58I get to play
15:59And yeah
16:00But I have to say
16:01I've cited you as someone
16:02Who has done it
16:03And you know
16:04Now you as well Duane
16:05Like someone who has done it
16:06So elegantly
16:07You managed to go against the grain
16:08Because the producers
16:09They want their job to be done easily
16:10You know
16:11You don't want your actor
16:12To have to go on these massive
16:13Transformative journeys
16:14Because it costs money
16:15And you have to get dialect coaches
16:16And everything else
16:17You want the actor to walk in
16:18As the character
16:19And actually what we want to do
16:20Is go on those journeys
16:21Which you guys have just described
16:22So beautifully
16:23So yeah
16:24It's a tough
16:25Kind of struggle
16:26Yeah
16:27And if you're going to a role
16:28We've seen a lot of paparazzi pictures
16:30Of Ms. Emily Blunt recently
16:32Because you
16:33Are you still filming
16:34The Devil Wears Prada 2?
16:36Yes
16:37Yes
16:40It must be lovely
16:41To be making something
16:42That people are so happy about
16:43They are so excited about it
16:45It is incredibly sweet
16:47I mean we're trying to keep
16:48As much of it under wraps
16:49As we can
16:50But it's not just the paparazzi
16:51It's the fans outside
16:52I've never experienced this
16:53Where it's just thousands of people
16:55Waiting outside the sets
16:56And I think when we made the first one
16:58Like we thought it was funny
17:00We were like
17:01It's really funny
17:02And then it comes out
17:03And I was a kid
17:04You know when it came out
17:05I mean it's 20 years ago
17:06And I remember my agent calling me
17:07Going you know this
17:08This is the opening weekend
17:09I was like
17:10Is that good?
17:11Like I didn't know
17:12What success was
17:13And so it had this meteoric life
17:14And it's amazing
17:15To come back to it
17:16And because to make the second one
17:17Obviously they needed the four of you
17:18You, Stanley, Anne and Merrill
17:19So did the four of you
17:20Have a lot of say
17:21In what the story was going to be
17:22We did
17:23I mean I think they were
17:24Very collaborative on it
17:25And you know
17:26They wanted everyone to be
17:27Happy
17:28They wanted us in cahoots
17:29With them
17:30Yeah
17:31So it was it was really
17:32Very collaborative on it
17:33And you know
17:34They wanted everyone to be
17:35Happy
17:36They wanted us in cahoots
17:37With them
17:38So it was it was really
17:39Really cool
17:40Well we look forward to that
17:41But before then
17:43Do I urge you
17:44Go see Emily and Dwayne
17:45Give extraordinary performances
17:46In The Smashing Machine
17:48In cinemas
17:49From October the 3rd
17:50Very good
17:51Thank you
17:52Good day
17:53Thank you
17:54OK
17:56Next up
17:57Matthew McConaughey
17:58He brings us
17:59The latest offering
18:00From director Paul Greengrass
18:02It's called
18:03The Lost Bus
18:04And it's out now
18:05In selected cinemas
18:06Then on Apple TV Plus
18:07From the 3rd of October
18:09Before we talk about it
18:10Here's some of the trail
18:12At approximately 6.30am this morning
18:14A fire entered
18:15The town of paradise
18:16Where do you need to get to?
18:21My son's a paradise grandma
18:24It's too late
18:25I'm too late as a father
18:35It's not too late
18:39It's not too late
18:40It's not too late
18:41It's not too late
18:42It's not too late
18:51Wowza
18:52And again
18:53This is another extraordinary true story
19:03Yeah
19:04These awful, awful California wildfires in 2018
19:07And this kind of reluctant hero
19:09Tell us about Adam McKay
19:11Kevin McKay
19:12Kevin McKay
19:13Sorry
19:14In our story
19:15He's come home
19:16Because his father died
19:17And he's there to take care of his widowed mother
19:20And reconcile our relationship with his son
19:22From an earlier divorce in his life
19:24He's got a part-time job as a school bus driver
19:27On this particular day
19:29Took the kids school, dropped them off
19:31Was out and about
19:32And fires were coming across the canyon
19:34They did it
19:35It happened all the time
19:36No one even got alarmed
19:37The first responders head up there and put them out
19:39But on this day
19:41The winds came and the fires jumped the canyon
19:43So the first responders were stuck
19:45And while they were stuck
19:47They called it a mandatory evacuation
19:49Out of the town of Paradise
19:51When that happens
19:53Kevin McKay has just made the decision
19:55I'm going to go back and get my mom
19:57And my son who cannot drive
19:59I'm going to save them and evacuate them
20:01Not two minutes later
20:03It comes through dispatch
20:05I've got 23 kids stranded on the east side of town
20:07Does anyone on that side of town have an empty bus?
20:09Well, guess who's got an empty bus?
20:11Do you pick that up and say yes?
20:15Or do you go get your mom and your son?
20:19He picked it up
20:21And he said, I got them
20:23He picks them up
20:24There's a teacher with a Mary Lugwig
20:25Who's played by America Ferreira
20:27And this is the story about the next six, seven, eight hours
20:30Of what happens
20:31Wow
20:32And you mentioned the personal side of the idea of being attacked
20:34Yeah
20:35And of course, that's incredibly present in this film
20:39Because it is a family affair
20:41Yes, it is
20:42Check this out
20:43Ha ha ha
20:45I go home and pitch the script to my family
20:48As I always do
20:49Here's what it's about
20:50You know
20:51And if it's too R-rated
20:52You got to kind of do it in a parable form
20:54Kids were old enough
20:56I told them that this one was about straight
20:58I get to the part about my son
21:00Son
21:01And my son, Levi
21:02Who's 15 at the time
21:03Goes, is that part cast yet?
21:04I said, no
21:05He goes, you think I can read for it?
21:06Oh, my God
21:07And I just kind of look at him
21:08Huh
21:09Had he ever read
21:10Have you ever read for anything before?
21:11No
21:12So this surprises me
21:13But I kind of just give him a shoulder
21:14And like, yeah, right
21:15He comes back
21:16Next day
21:17The next day he badgers me four times
21:18I said, okay
21:19All right
21:20First off, sit down
21:21We're going to talk about what this acting gig is
21:23I said, this ain't modeling
21:25This ain't no attitude
21:27All right
21:28This is a freaking rodeo
21:29And you got to go with soul
21:31And no bullshit in your bone
21:33So he goes, well, I already got a scene
21:34Worked out
21:35I want to shoot
21:36So I pulled out my camera shot
21:37And I was like, first take
21:38I was like, okay
21:39Kids got present
21:40He was able to behave honestly
21:42In front of the camera
21:43I was like, that's for starters
21:44You need that
21:45Did two takes
21:46I sent it to the casting director
21:47With a note saying
21:48I think this is good enough for a call back
21:51She writes back
21:52And says, I think it's good enough
21:53To send to the director, Paul Greengrass
21:54I said, great
21:56And it dawned on me
21:57Wait a minute
21:58Do me a favor
21:59Can you pull his last name?
22:01If he gets it
22:03Is he going to have an inkling
22:05That the last name helped him?
22:06Oh, I don't want that happening
22:08So she pulled the last name
22:09Goes in his sleeve
22:10Paul sees it
22:11Director
22:12Looks like this
22:13This is the kid
22:14She said, well, you know
22:15It's actually Matthew's son in real life
22:16He goes, even better
22:17So cool
22:18And then, so it's lovely
22:19Your son's in it
22:20Your mom's in it
22:21My mom's in it
22:22My mom's in it
22:23Tell them who she plays
22:25Tell them who she plays
22:26No, she plays
22:27My mother
22:29There she is
22:31Kate McConaughey
22:3293 years young
22:33Oh my god, she's gorgeous
22:34Isn't it
22:35Right?
22:36No, but look at your son as well
22:37Wow
22:38So
22:40What we're going through
22:42Paul and I would get together
22:43Every week
22:44And kind of just go over
22:45The last week
22:46How are we doing?
22:47Are we missing anything?
22:48Is there anything we want to do?
22:49Anything special?
22:50And the news was always good
22:51We were always happy
22:52With everything that was going
22:53But he said
22:54About four weeks in
22:55He goes, I got one problem
22:56He goes, I think I miscast the mother
22:57And I either misdirected it
22:58Or we got to rewrite the scene
22:59Do you know
23:00Do you have anybody idea
23:01Who can play your mother?
23:02I said, let me think about it
23:03Next day he goes, what about your mom?
23:05Wow
23:06They're making this family affair
23:07Paul said, hang on a second
23:08He goes, let's just cast her
23:09I said, hang on
23:10Hang on
23:11Before we just cast her
23:12Let me get her in front of you
23:13And I said, mom
23:14Can you send me a minute video
23:17On your phone
23:18Of why you love being a mom?
23:19She sends me an eight minute video
23:21Of why she loves being a mom
23:22I show that to Paul
23:23He's like, yes
23:24That's her
23:25What was that conversation like
23:27When you told your mom?
23:28She was already into like
23:31Let me check with my agent
23:32Which she doesn't have
23:33She was already like
23:37Well, let me think about it
23:39This is all sounding very familiar to
23:44James Norton
23:45Because your dad
23:46Has he been in every single thing you've done?
23:49Dad? Has he?
23:50My dad has been in nearly everything I've ever done
23:53I'm terrified of him watching this
23:54Because I know I'm going to get a text saying
23:56Why can't I play your dad?
23:57I want to
23:58I want to, you know
23:59I've got my notes ready
24:00He mostly does kind of supporting background work
24:02Yeah, yeah
24:03He does a day as an essay on everything I do
24:05So here he is in the House of Guinness
24:07This is your current project
24:09Oh, God
24:10There he is
24:11But we have found footage of him
24:13From War and Peace
24:14This is, it's over
24:15Is it ten years ago?
24:16More than ten
24:17At least
24:18He flew himself out to Lithuania
24:19To shoot this
24:20He flies across the world
24:21I did wonder
24:22How the hell he ended up in Lithuania
24:24To be in this
24:25So he flew himself
24:26He grabs it
24:27Yeah, yeah
24:28Okay
24:29He gets a free haircut
24:30He kind of struts around the set like a peacock
24:31Gets, you know
24:32To flirt
24:33You're not in this scene
24:35But keep an eye out
24:36I'll show you
24:38James' dad here
24:39I mean blink and you might miss him
24:40But here we go
24:41A warm piece
24:42It's all going very well
24:44Lovely
24:45Very dramatic
24:46Who's that in the moustache
24:47Oh my God
24:48Hi
24:49There you go
24:50Did he keep the moustache?
24:52Yes
24:53He loved it
24:54Did he keep the moustache?
24:55He didn't keep the moustache
24:56No
24:57Oh, it's a new one in House of Guinness
24:58It's a new one in House of Guinness
24:59Yeah, in House of Guinness
25:00He had to throw a bottle at me
25:01And he's not the most coordinated
25:02And we
25:03It was in a stunt sequence
25:04And he had to throw the bottle multiple times
25:06But yeah, no, he loves it
25:07So when he comes out
25:08Is it specifically for one scene?
25:09Or does he just lurk around for many background scenes?
25:12No, no, no
25:13We make sure that he's only on for one scene
25:14I mean, he would
25:15He would if he had the choice
25:16Get an agent
25:17I mean, I'm terrified
25:18But has he never asked for a line?
25:20Has he never asked for a line?
25:21He had a line in one thing
25:22Oh, it's terrible
25:23He had a
25:24I'm sorry, Dad
25:25He had a line in Lady Chatley's Lover
25:28And I remember him
25:29It was
25:30The director said
25:31Q
25:32Let's give you a line
25:33And he improvised something
25:34About the state of the coal mine
25:36And he looks at me
25:37And he goes
25:38What the fuck?
25:39Like how do I
25:40And then it was
25:41I don't know about you
25:42But you obviously
25:43Your son and your mum
25:44Obviously clearly
25:45Much more talented than my dad
25:46Because he was terrible
25:47And I was standing there
25:48And I'm trying to stay in character
25:49And all I have is this man going
25:50The coal is not coming up the ground
25:54Terrible
25:55Really distracting
25:56When your dad is a terrible actor
25:59And Dwayne, your mum
26:01She didn't act
26:02But she has now done some acting
26:04She has
26:05We actually
26:06So I followed in Matthew's path
26:07And I put her in
26:09A caster
26:10In live action Moana
26:12So she's in that
26:13Yeah
26:14Does she have lines?
26:15No, thank God
26:16Okay
26:17You went the Norton route
26:19No, yes
26:20That's it
26:21You've talked about her before
26:22But I love the idea of your mother
26:23She enjoys your fame very much
26:25She loves it
26:26She does
26:27She does
26:28My mum's had a tough life
26:29And she
26:30So now she's living like
26:31There she is
26:32She's just living her best life
26:34And she does
26:35She's my biggest fan
26:36And she has this crazy room
26:38That's called the Smackdown room
26:41And in the Smackdown
26:42It's just all me
26:44Yes
26:45Everything that I mean
26:47Every little thing
26:48Anything you can think of
26:50She just shoves it in there
26:51And then
26:52Does your mum have something like that?
26:53My mum has the same room
26:54She does?
26:55Not of you
26:56But it's of all my stuff
26:57That would be weird
26:58That would be amazing
27:02So your mum is your biggest fan?
27:03Yes
27:04But she also
27:05She is my biggest fan
27:06But she also is very clear to take credit
27:09For all of
27:10Wow
27:11Every role I've ever played
27:13Here's what she comes up after
27:14She goes
27:15Man you did so good
27:17I can tell where you got it from
27:19Very proud
27:22But
27:23We
27:24We're fine now
27:25My ship's stable enough
27:26Where I'm like
27:27Mum say whatever you want
27:28Whatever you want
27:29Now that she's got a great agent
27:30She's good
27:31But also
27:32She published a book
27:33Yes
27:34Can you remember what the name of the book was?
27:35Oh yes
27:36Because
27:37She probably
27:38Has already put a sticker
27:39Of the title of the book
27:40On my truck
27:41It's called
27:42I Amaze Myself
27:45I feel like
27:46Every book
27:47Every book should be called
27:48I Amaze Myself
27:49She's a legend
27:50She's a legend
27:51That is amazing
27:52Chapter 26
27:53Guess what the title is
27:54Some people deserve to be pissed on
28:05What is Christmas like in your house?
28:07Oh
28:08It's wild
28:09Is it novel?
28:10Oh
28:11It's short stories
28:12Some people
28:13It's probably helped out some people
28:14She's very much
28:15She gets by on positive thinking
28:18And denial
28:19And it works
28:21And she's 93
28:22And not shallow
28:23And kicking ass
28:24So I love her
28:25Talking of books
28:26I must say
28:27After the success of your memoir
28:28Greenlights
28:29You now have a new book
28:30Poems and Prayers
28:31Yeah
28:32Number one in the New York Times
28:33We already know
28:34There's going to be
28:35The best seller list
28:36On Sunday time
28:37Thank you
28:38Thank you
28:39Thank you
28:40And
28:41From what I read
28:42So a lot of the material in here
28:44You've been working on
28:45Off and on for years
28:46Yes
28:47So this is something you've always done
28:49Yeah
28:50I've been writing poetry since 18
28:51Yeah
28:52Yeah
28:53And I think you're going to do one for us
28:55Maybe
28:56Yeah I'd love to read one
28:57Have you got the book with you yet?
28:58Actually your mum is here
28:59And she's here
29:00She's here in her two piece bikini
29:02Ready to read
29:03I wanted to set up
29:05Ready to pee on somebody
29:06Well you've got the book there
29:07Oh you've got the book there
29:08What this
29:09Why I wrote it
29:10And why I put it out now
29:11Seems to me belief is in short supply
29:14Look around
29:16Turn on the news
29:17You look around there
29:18Not much to believe in
29:20Or reasons to believe
29:22And
29:23That's
29:24Not going to work
29:25Because if doubt wins
29:26We're all going to lose
29:27Alright?
29:28So this is me looking for belief
29:29Because I found my own self getting cynical
29:31I found my own self objectifying people
29:33And kind of thinking
29:34I guess that's just the way it is
29:36First that scared me
29:37Secondly thankfully
29:38It pissed me off
29:39And I said no no no no no
29:40I promise I'll never become a cynic
29:42At the early death
29:43If you do that
29:44So
29:45I wrote this
29:46To dive into my own belief
29:47I've also found a lot of people along the way going
29:49They feel kind of the same way
29:50They're looking for belief
29:51So poems and prayers
29:52Instead of looking to reality
29:53And the evidence for belief
29:54Let's look at our dreams
29:56And our aspirations
29:57And see if we can bring those back down to earth
29:59And that's why I wrote this book
30:00There's a bunch in there
30:02Why don't I read one that's kind of funny
30:03Okay
30:04Alright?
30:05And not that long
30:06How about that?
30:07Alright it's called More Time
30:08I think it was about 2am
30:10The band played the last tune
30:12And I said amen
30:13Went to pay my tab over at the bar
30:15When the main event started tuning their guitar
30:18So I ordered myself another bottle of wine
30:20God I love it when I got more time
30:22Thought it was the year 2010
30:25Not a worrying sight in the fast lane again
30:28Signed all my checks one year tardy
30:31Cause it was 09
30:32And I hadn't left the party
30:34So happy my balance wasn't in the red
30:36God I love it when I'm early instead
30:38Met a woman I liked and she became my friend
30:42We turned into lovers and thought we'd make it until the end
30:45But as soon as we lined up hand in hand in the queue
30:48My eyes started turning a lighter shade of blue
30:51Well sometimes love just loses its shine
30:55And sometimes leaving early
30:57Just gives you more time
30:59Thank you
31:00Thank you
31:01Very good
31:02Thank you
31:03Very good
31:04Thank you
31:05Very good
31:06Thank you
31:07Meanwhile in another part of the forest
31:12James Norton brings us a new epic historical drama
31:16House of Guinness on Netflix now
31:19And here's a taste delicious
31:21The death of your father has served to poke a stick in a hornet's nest
31:27Walk away next
31:29A gift from Mr. Guinness
31:31And you're gonna start a war
31:33From a representative of the Dublin poor
31:35Children Sir Benjamin leaves behind are weak and divided
31:41Now is the time to use that weakness
31:44Freedom!
31:45You think there'll be trouble today?
31:49The man's name is Guinness
31:54Of course there'll be fucking trouble
32:08Thank you
32:12There's no ponies in that
32:14No ponies, big horses
32:15No ponies, big horses
32:16Big horses
32:17And here's the thing
32:18Obviously the Guinness family
32:19Who are kind of fighting for control of the brewery
32:22They're real
32:23Who do you play
32:24And are you kind of an actual historical figure?
32:27So I'm not
32:28I'm made up
32:29The story is kind of
32:30The father Benjamin Guinness
32:32It's all true
32:33He died in the early 1860s
32:35And he left his power vacuum
32:37The kind of big dynasty show
32:38The four children
32:39Then take over the brewery
32:40I play there
32:42Fixer, caretaker
32:44He runs the show
32:45He's the boss
32:46He's called Sean Rafferty
32:47And he's a badass
32:49Yeah, he really is a badass
32:50So cool
32:51Yeah, and it's by the same guy who wrote Peaky Blinders, right?
32:55It's Stephen Knight, yeah
32:56Oh, I love Stephen Knight
32:57Yeah, yeah
32:58And he's firing on all cylinders
32:59He's in his element
33:00You can tell he had a lot of fun making it
33:03Yeah, it's a really
33:04It's a romp, you know
33:05It's an amazing period of history
33:06It's when this brand, Guinness
33:09Became this, you know
33:10The biggest beer brand in the world
33:11I didn't realise how famous Guinness was in the 1860s
33:13Yeah
33:14It was global already
33:15Well, it was just
33:16The story is the kind of
33:17The moment it exploded into North America
33:20And on the kind of coattails of the Industrial Revolution
33:23And but it's sort of
33:24It's smoky and sexy
33:25And it's irreverent
33:26And you know
33:27It's
33:28We have many names
33:29The crown with beer
33:30Sub-session it's been called
33:32Did they skip sub-session?
33:34Sub-session
33:35I mean, there's many people who have coined it
33:36But yeah, it's a lot of fun
33:37It's definitely a fun, fun romp
33:39And when I watch something like this
33:40And you know, you're in it
33:41And you're doing a really good Dublin accent
33:43Thank you
33:44When you said yes to it
33:45Did you just kind of think
33:46I'm sure I can do that accent
33:48Or did you know you could do a Dublin accent?
33:50No, I mean, I was terrified
33:52You know, the Irish are very
33:53Well, you know
33:54Well, you know, they're very proud people
33:56Rightly so
33:57They'll tell you
33:58They will tell me
33:59They do
34:00Have you done press in Ireland yet?
34:01I have
34:02You got away yet
34:03Terrifying honestly
34:04I sat on this couch with Jamie Dornan
34:06And he told us he got crucified by a journalist
34:08For his Irish accent
34:09Yes
34:10And he's Irish
34:11I was in that movie with him
34:12You were in that movie
34:13And we got destroyed
34:14Yeah, but he's Irish
34:15I mean
34:16I know he's
34:17But he's from Belfast
34:18Yeah, that's true
34:19And they told him his Irish accent was shit
34:21So it was like
34:22I don't know what
34:23I don't know
34:24Anyway, but no
34:25Listen, the accent was terrifying
34:26And I worked really hard at it
34:28Because, you know
34:29We all know actors who didn't get it right
34:31And they do get held to account
34:32And did you have any kind of like
34:34Were you given shortcuts into it?
34:36Yes, I did
34:37I had an amazing dialect coach called Paul Mousselides
34:40Who basically
34:41Yeah, he gave me
34:43I don't know if you've ever done this for an accent
34:45But he gave me kind of the vowels broken down into eight sounds
34:48And then these little poems actually
34:50Funnily enough
34:51I could follow
34:52I could follow with one of the poems
34:53But they were kind of ridiculous
34:55And I would listen to them
34:56And look kind of crazy walking around
34:58Can you remember any of them?
34:59I remember
35:00Like the sound
35:02I mean I'm going to butcher it
35:03And the Irish people are going to come
35:05No, they're not
35:06They are
35:07No, I'm not on set
35:08It was a year and a half ago
35:09In my defence
35:10I found like wine, light, fine Ireland
35:13It was something like
35:15The prime height for umpours in Ireland is five foot nine
35:19I'm smiling now because of the fine white wine I'm drinking
35:22It makes me feel like I'm a lion flying over a toy
35:26Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
35:27You know what I mean?
35:28Did you do that earlier?
35:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
35:30You still got it
35:31You still got it
35:32That's one of
35:33That's cool
35:34You meant that, no?
35:35It was an accent
35:36It's very scientific
35:37You break the accent down into these types
35:39Have you ever done an accent, Matthew?
35:40Yes
35:41Yeah, Tim Monick is who I worked with
35:43Who's done the same things
35:44He's great
35:45Yeah, you give the little limericks
35:47And you just find the uh
35:49Actually the rhyme
35:50And then the vowel sounds
35:52Along the way
35:53And you start
35:54It sort of seeps in
35:55And uh, James Norton
35:56The
35:57This is a
35:58You know, it's a big action
35:59Uh
36:00Series
36:01Big action role for you
36:02And you know
36:03We've had fighting
36:04We've had fires
36:05You bring us explosions
36:07I do
36:08Have you ever had to do
36:09Walking away from an explosion before?
36:11I'm so pleased we can get to talk about this
36:13Yeah, so we have
36:14No
36:15You have
36:16I know you have
36:17Because there is a song
36:18So we were shooting this scene
36:19Um, in Liverpool
36:20And my
36:21And Sean Rafferty
36:22My role was made very easy
36:23Because all I had to do
36:24Was sort of strut
36:25And smoke cigarettes
36:26And look
36:27Kind of cool
36:28And so one of these scenes
36:29I was walking away from an explosion
36:30And my business partner
36:31And my dear dear best friend
36:32She texts me in the middle of this scene
36:34She said
36:35Have you seen
36:36Cool Guys Don't Look Back at Explosions?
36:37The Lonely Island guys
36:38Have you seen it?
36:39Yes
36:40The Andy Sandberg
36:41Which you were in
36:42It's a song and he's cut together
36:43It's so good
36:44He's cut together all the actors and actresses
36:46Over the time in Hollywood
36:47Who have walked away from an explosion
36:49And not turned back
36:50You can't turn back
36:51You can't turn back
36:52But you were my inspiration
36:53Oh cool
36:54This is
36:55This is
36:56Actually in the series
36:57This is Sean Rafferty
36:58Walking away from an explosion
36:59I'm not afraid of a bit of progress
37:04And wait for it
37:05Oh there you go
37:06But then I do look back
37:07Do I not?
37:08No you don't
37:09No!
37:10So cool
37:11So the rules bearing are
37:12You don't look back
37:13That's a rule
37:14You don't look back
37:15And I suppose the other thing would be
37:16You wouldn't look sort of
37:17Pleased with yourself
37:18For walking away from an explosion
37:19Oh no
37:20Don't look back
37:21Don't look pleased
37:22Don't look pleased
37:23Stone cold straight faces
37:24Stone cold straight faces
37:25Yeah like this is what I do
37:26Kind of thing
37:27But by the way
37:28You're a producer
37:29Make it happen
37:30I wasn't a producer
37:31But I don't know what you're
37:32Yeah
37:33So this is
37:34This is a slightly longer
37:35This is behind the scenes
37:37Of Sean Rafferty
37:39Walking away from an explosion
37:40Oh
37:41So here he goes
37:42So there's the explosion
37:44Not looking back
37:45Oh he looked back
37:46At least he hasn't looked pleased
37:48With himself at all
37:50Oh
37:52Oh
37:53Oh
37:55Oh
37:56Oh
37:57Oh cool
37:58Found out
37:59Alright it's time for music

43:47did yeah greg james i sang it i like it was a challenge to me like the rap portion because you
43:53know there's like a like a rhythm to it yes it was crazy yes i know i butchered it but it was terrible
44:03i'll tell her it was terrible i did so congratulations on everything oh my gosh i would

44:33of given myself a rough deadline i would like to say the first third of next year definitely the first
44:38half of next year okay so i okay this is not what i thought i thought it was kind of like done you were
44:47just doing a little polishing oh no no yeah maybe add some add some horns to that no not at all so are
44:54you writing it right now i am yeah so it's a beautiful process but it does take time and i yeah
45:04yeah i had it in where is my husband eight days before it come out do you know what i mean
45:08so i'm combing away at it chipping away no this could be better we should add this yeah when you're
45:13writing do you sleep or are you just always churning with it no you need rest being tired in the
45:18studio is the worst yeah yeah you need to be on you need to be present and i think it's kind of like
45:23imagining your guys crafts you know when your your heart starts beating and you just feel like
45:28this adrenaline goes and you're like i'm where i need to be right now i need to chase this feeling
45:32it's that feeling you know yeah being tired in the studio your songs are gonna suck
45:36and now in terms of finishing the album and tell me this does the album at least have a name um
45:44not really kind of kind of kind of what is it kind of called
