In Botswana (S2E1), Ed tackles the Okavango Delta, facing floods, shifting water, and dangerous wildlife. During the rainy season, his camp is threatened by rising water. Trusting his instincts, Ed must negotiate survival with hippos, crocodiles, and other predators while securing food, water, and a safe refuge.

Watch Ed’s tactical moves in wetland survival: adapting to flooding, fishing in tricky terrain, and maintaining camp under pressure.

00:00This time on Marooned, I'm entering a true lost world.
00:05It's like I've been dropped in the middle of Jurassic Park.
00:08Oh my God.
00:11These are the mysterious Tupuy Mountains of Venezuela,
00:14and there are hidden dangers everywhere.
00:17There's a big animal around here.
00:20But the worst enemies here are the wet and the cold.
00:24I can't take a bit of experience where I've been caught up more.
00:30I'm Ed Stafford.
00:33I've walked the length of the Amazon and survived on a desert island
00:36with only a camera to film my adventure.
00:40Now, I've set myself a new challenge
00:43to prove I can make it in some of the world's toughest environments.
00:48Oh my God.
00:50Using only what I find around me.
00:52What do you have a kidney in the middle?
00:54I'll be left completely alone for ten days with nothing.
00:58Words cannot describe how I feel right now.
01:01No film crew, no food, no water.
01:05The sun is directly overhead. It's boiling hot.
01:07Not even a knife.
01:09Right, come on, Ed. Go and move on.
01:11This time, it's about more than survival.
01:14I want to see if I can thrive...
01:15Yes!
01:16...anywhere.
01:17My nerves are building now.
01:28I really want to get on with it.
01:34I'm in Venezuela,
01:36in a remote upland region of the vast Grand Sabana.
01:39My drop zone is the Batari Tapui,
01:43a flat-top mountain 2,400 metres high.
01:48These mountains are some of the oldest in the world
01:51and look like something from a fantasy film.
01:55But the dangers here are very real.
01:59Poisonous creatures,
02:01venomous snakes,
02:01and unforgiving weather.
02:06From now on,
02:07I'm completely alone,
02:09with nothing apart from a camera kit.
02:17There it goes.
02:19Hey, that's the last I'm going to see of anyone
02:21for ten days.
02:24Oh, boy.
02:25Ten days should be enough to prove
02:30I can learn how to live long-term
02:32in this hostile environment,
02:34using only what's around me.
02:37I'm completely on my own.
02:39Completely and utterly on my own.
02:43The nearest village
02:45is almost a 12-hour hike.
02:48I've got no film crew
02:49and no food or water.
02:52The only thing I have got
02:53is the filming equipment in this bay.
02:55I've got two cameras,
02:57point of view cameras to go over my head.
02:59I've got an emergency medical kit.
03:00I've got an emergency satellite phone.
03:04I'm right up in the clouds.
03:07You can see how fast this weather is moving.
03:11It is eerie.
03:13It feels prehistoric.
03:14It really does.
03:15It's like I've been dropped
03:16in the middle of Jurassic Park.
03:20I'm at 1,700 metres.
03:23It's cold.
03:23Around 9 degrees Celsius.
03:26But at night, it can drop much lower.
03:29Okay, survival priorities.
03:31Let's get this working.
03:33Water, first one.
03:35For night one, shelter.
03:38Fire.
03:39Obviously, I'm up high.
03:40Cold is going to be a massive issue here.
03:42And then the least of all my worries, food.
03:45There are just a few hours of daylight left,
03:48so I'm getting off this exposed outcrop.
03:51I want to make camp lower down,
03:53where experience tells me it should be warmer.
03:55It's just thick, thick, thick, thick bushes.
04:04And it's just slimy and wet underneath.
04:06This is some sort of, it's like a tropical cloud forest.
04:13This place is just so moist, so damp.
04:18It's hard going, but I've got to push on down
04:21to where I hope to find water and a place to make camp.
04:25A coral snake just wiggled straight across where I was walking.
04:36I need to be really careful.
04:39My feet were about that far away from a coral snake.
04:43A coral snake's a highly, highly venomous.
04:45I'm walking around here in bare feet.
04:47That's death very quickly.
04:49The venom from one coral snake bite could kill me.
04:56Even if I used my emergency sat phone,
04:59there's a good chance help would arrive too late.
05:02I need to stay alert to stay alive.
05:12It's starting to rain.
05:14But that's not a good sign.
05:16OK, but this tree is a good sign.
05:19The fibrous layer under the bark of this tree
05:21makes strong cordage.
05:23I'm going to save some for later
05:25and very quickly make something to wear.
05:30Clothes will help keep the mozzies off
05:32and always give me a psychological boost.
05:41OK, one growl skirt.
05:43Done.
05:44Finding the cordage tree was lucky.
05:46And that's not all this mountainside has to offer.
05:51This here is a piece of red jasper.
05:54Property-wise, it's almost like flint.
05:58I can hopefully get a few cutting tools out of this.
06:01I'm literally, I'm in the middle of the clouds now.
06:11The temperature has dropped massively.
06:14I'm starting to get a little bit concerned about...
06:16about my temperature to tonight.
06:21This weather changes fast.
06:23I don't think I stand a chance at this altitude.
06:25I'm going to carry on heading down.
06:34The jungle levels out far below to the south.
06:38And that's where I need to make camp before dark.
06:43As I descend, I make another useful discovery.
06:47There's bees here.
06:52There's a bee's nest, actually.
06:55The bees seem extremely dormant.
06:58It's just perfect.
06:58Probably too cold.
07:00I should be able to get
07:01handfuls of honey out of them.
07:05I know that many bees in South America are stingless.
07:07I hope these aren't the exception.
07:17But it looks like these are the least of my worries.
07:22There's two snakes in here.
07:26And there's a scorpion here as well.
07:31This scorpion's covered in babies,
07:33so I can't tell what type it is.
07:35I'm keeping well clear.
07:41Two snakes and a scorpion
07:43in the middle of a bee's nest.
07:48Sticky gooey.
07:53I mean...
07:57Mm.
07:58Each mouthful contains around 100 calories.
08:01A quick feed on this
08:02should keep me going until tomorrow.
08:05That...
08:06is incredible.
08:12Right, head down the mountain.
08:13Head down the mountain.
08:22I'm around 300 metres lower now,
08:25and the forest has changed.
08:27Still very damp,
08:29but the trees are a lot bigger.
08:30Horse flies.
08:31And...
08:31horse flies.
08:36Time's against me.
08:38I must find a clear area
08:39to make camp before nightfall.
08:43You hear that?
08:45It sounds like
08:46water going over rapids.
08:48There is in front of me
08:54a big river.
08:55That is brilliant news.
08:58Now that's what I call a water supply.
09:02Good.
09:03Right.
09:04Find yourself a campsite,
09:05and let's look to build
09:07a little shelter
09:07to keep the rain off.
09:08I'm heading downriver,
09:15away from the rapids,
09:16to where I hope
09:17the water's calmer.
09:22At this point on the river,
09:24this feels good.
09:26This is where
09:26I'm going to build my house.
09:28This is a great spot
09:30to make camp.
09:31I've got good access to water,
09:33and the forest
09:34will provide material
09:35for my shelter.
09:36Right, let's get cracking.
09:41I'm in a hurry
09:42to get this done,
09:43but it's the tail end
09:45of the rainy season,
09:46so I want to build
09:47something serious
09:48to keep me dry.
09:50For extra strength,
09:52I'm using vines
09:53and tree bark
09:53to lash the poles together.
09:56It's not easy
09:57with just your bare hands,
09:59no knife.
10:00It just takes
10:02so much longer.
10:03And I have to,
10:04have to,
10:05get this thing thatched.
10:09That sunshine
10:10that was coming
10:10through the trees
10:11is no longer here.
10:18I wish I'd gone
10:20with a less complicated design.
10:23Look out there
10:24on the water.
10:25It's hammering it down.
10:26The rain's getting heavier
10:30by the minute.
10:31In these conditions,
10:33I'm not going to be finished
10:34before dark.
10:36The temperature's dropping,
10:38and I'm in serious trouble.
10:40I'm soaking wet.
10:57That means I'm losing heat
10:5925 times faster
11:00than if I was dry.
11:01It is very cold.
11:04Very, very, very, very cold.
11:07Very, very, very, very cold.
11:10I'm shivering uncontrollably
11:12and getting confused,
11:14both signs of hypothermia.
11:16If my core temperature
11:18drops below 28,
11:19there's probably no way back.
11:21This is how I let myself
11:24get into this situation.
11:28Stafford, the idiot.
11:34I'm Ed Stafford,
11:36and I'm in deep trouble
11:37in the Venezuelan jungle.
11:38I'm soaked,
11:41and my core temperature
11:42is dropping dangerously low.
11:45Hypothermia is a serious risk.
11:48I can't take a good experience
11:50where I've been caught out more.
11:53To do these trips
11:54completely alone,
11:55I have to carry a medical kit.
11:58I never open it
11:59unless my life is in danger.
12:02And in this situation,
12:04I've got no choice.
12:06I must use my emergency
12:08survival blanket.
12:25A ridiculous night.
12:30That was a horrific experience.
12:33I'm doing this to prove to myself
12:35I could live here long term
12:37and right now,
12:38I'm failing.
12:41If I'm going to thrive here,
12:44it's time to get busy.
12:45Right, let's get cracking.
12:49I'm hungry and cold,
12:51but my absolute priority
12:53is to finish this shelter.
12:55I can't spend another hellish night
12:57out in the rain.
12:59These are the leaves I'm going to use.
13:00They're big and waxy.
13:03Just trying to create
13:04a little hook like that.
13:05The thatching takes three hard hours.
13:11Just one more row to do.
13:13And then I've got myself
13:14at least a rudimentary shelter.
13:18Actually, that looks military-style
13:21bomb-proof.
13:25Next up, fire.
13:27I've got no matches or lighter,
13:29but I'm well-practiced at using
13:32whatever's available.
13:34The trouble here
13:35is that nothing is dry.
13:38Everything is damp.
13:39Everything is humid.
13:40And I can't light fire like that.
13:43I need to keep looking.
13:45That sound.
13:52Sounds like a waterfall.
13:57Definitely a waterfall,
13:59it has to be.
14:00Nothing else could make that noise.
14:03That is loud.
14:06I'm cruddy, actually.
14:07Yeah, I think I can see it.
14:13Oh my God.
14:16That whole wall,
14:17that whole white area you can see
14:18is water.
14:23That is extraordinary.
14:29Ow!
14:30There's a bit of a washed-up body
14:48in the river.
14:53Maybe.
14:54That.
14:56Actually, that might not be old.
14:58I think this large rodent
15:01might be an agouti.
15:05Is that edible?
15:07I think the only way to know
15:08is to cut it open,
15:10so I'm going to smash a bit of
15:12red jaffer and try and get
15:14the blade off it.
15:19That meat is fresh.
15:21I can eat that.
15:25Now I've opened this thing up,
15:26it'll go off fast.
15:28I need to cook it soon.
15:31This is going to be
15:32the ultimate pressure
15:35to get a fire lit
15:36that there ever was.
15:40Right, come on.
15:42Dry wood.
15:46On my way down yesterday,
15:47I saw some open grassland.
15:51The wood there should be dry.
15:53This is what I'm after.
15:59Brilliant.
16:01Next, I need cordage
16:03to make a bow drill,
16:04but there's no time
16:05to gather more bark,
16:06so I'm using my skirt.
16:10I've never been in such a rush
16:12to make a fire.
16:13I really don't want
16:15the meat to go bad.
16:16This has got to work.
16:18I've done this many times now.
16:27It's always difficult,
16:29frustrating,
16:29and exhausting.
16:30But after 40 minutes
16:34of hard graft,
16:36I'm finally getting somewhere.
16:39Yes!
16:40Yes, yes, yes!
16:42Oh, my God, that's good.
16:44We've got fire.
16:46We've got warmth at night.
16:47We've got cooked large rodent.
16:51Yes!
16:54And relax.
16:57Hanging the meat over the fire
16:58will keep the flies off
17:00and smoke it,
17:02making it last longer.
17:09Whoo-hoo-hoo!
17:10That was close.
17:13Be careful.
17:14run fires
17:17when you wear a grass skirt.
17:19Ahem.
17:23So we've got kidney,
17:25breast meat,
17:26bit of thigh,
17:27lung.
17:29Nice little giant rodent kebab.
17:32The kidney meat,
17:34in particular,
17:35is packed with vitamins
17:36and minerals,
17:37which my body
17:38is crying out for.
17:39What a difference
17:40a day makes.
17:42I've built a shelter.
17:44I've made a fire.
17:46I've scavenged
17:48a large rodent.
17:51Life couldn't get much better,
17:52really, could it?
17:56Oh.
17:57My.
17:58God.
18:05Tastes like kebab.
18:06That's really good.
18:13Oh, golly,
18:13that's good.
18:15Lung.
18:17Ooh.
18:19Tastes a little bit
18:20like kidney, actually.
18:24Ooh, not cooked in the middle.
18:26A bit bloody.
18:29Kidney.
18:31Ooh, that needs
18:32a bit more as well.
18:33What an amazing day.
18:50I've to admit,
18:51I woke up depressed.
18:53Very cold night.
18:55Lots of rain.
18:56Hadn't built my shelter.
18:57It is always
19:00slightly disconcerting
19:02at first,
19:02until you've got
19:03a roof above your head,
19:04a fire by your side,
19:06some meat hanging above it,
19:08and a plentiful source
19:09of fresh water.
19:11So,
19:12yeah,
19:13it's just a...
19:15breakfast of champions.
19:38This meat is delicious
19:39and a very rare find.
19:42There must be
19:436,000 calories here,
19:45enough for a couple of days.
19:47When it runs out,
19:49I'll need to find
19:50a longer-term food supply.
19:52But right now,
19:53all this energy means
19:54I can think beyond
19:55just surviving.
19:59First up,
20:00I'm going to extend
20:01my tiny shelter,
20:03a must for long-term living
20:05in a place
20:06with this much rain.
20:08Happy days.
20:09Well done.
20:12Next,
20:12I build a drying rack
20:14for wood,
20:15essential to keep
20:16the fire going.
20:18I'm ready to job
20:19with that.
20:19And finally,
20:21the ultimate luxury,
20:23a bed.
20:24Every bit of effort
20:25is going to be worth it
20:26when I'm raised
20:27off the floor
20:27and not lying
20:29in the damp mud.
20:30This will keep me warm
20:32and safe from snakes.
20:34The bed alone
20:36has taken five hours.
20:39I've never worked so hard
20:40just to have a lie down.
20:45My bed is finished.
20:49It's so comfy.
20:50I can't tell you
20:51how comfy that bed is.
20:55It is luxury, isn't it?
20:57I'm off the floor.
20:58I'm not living like an animal.
21:00It's that step
21:01from just primitively surviving
21:03to being comfortable,
21:07starting to thrive.
21:08But in the jungle,
21:12you can never totally relax.
21:20I've been working
21:21for two days
21:22and it's rained
21:23almost constantly.
21:25It is amazing
21:26how much the water level
21:28is risen.
21:28I'm down at the water level now
21:31and you can see
21:31that there's my camp behind me.
21:36The river is in such
21:37a state of flood.
21:41I'm really regretting
21:42building my shelter
21:43this close to the river.
21:45If there's more rain
21:46and the water
21:47gets any higher,
21:49all of my hard work
21:50could be washed away.
21:52I'm Ed Stafford.
22:01I've given myself
22:02ten days
22:02to prove
22:03I can thrive
22:04in the Venezuelan jungle
22:05with nothing
22:06and no one
22:07to help me.
22:11Overnight,
22:12yet more rain
22:12has drained
22:13into the river
22:14by my camp.
22:16It's, um,
22:17extraordinary.
22:19It's about
22:19another foot higher.
22:20I've got my foot
22:23where it was dry.
22:25This river is
22:26rising and rising.
22:27Probably about
22:28a metre now
22:29between the
22:29high water level
22:31and my camp.
22:33The floodwaters
22:34aren't my only problem.
22:39I've got no energy
22:40this morning.
22:44That meat
22:44ran out yesterday
22:45and, um,
22:48I'm walking
22:49at a snail's pace today.
22:50After eating
22:53so well
22:53for days,
22:54I'm out of meat.
22:56So the priority now
22:57is to build
22:58a fish trap
22:59and for that
23:00I need
23:01a tall palm.
23:04This is what
23:05I'm looking for.
23:06That
23:07is the sort of palm
23:09I'm after.
23:10But it's a big one.
23:12I can use
23:13the stems
23:14of this tree's leaves
23:15to build
23:15my fish trap.
23:17The trouble is
23:18they're at the top
23:19and I haven't got
23:20the energy
23:21to climb up.
23:22There's not a chance
23:23in hell
23:23I could, um,
23:25snap that.
23:26So I just thought
23:27maybe I could,
23:28maybe I could
23:29either bend
23:30or snap the top off.
23:32If I make a lasso
23:35out of the vine
23:36around the trunk
23:37and then push it
23:38up to the trunk,
23:40then I should be able
23:43to heave
23:44the palm down.
23:47This might work,
23:49it might not.
23:52I'm hoping
23:53the increased leverage
23:54will do the trick.
23:55Oh, yes!
24:07Oh, nice one!
24:11It's these
24:12that I'm after
24:13in order to
24:14make my fish trap.
24:16I'm using
24:17my red jasper blade
24:18to cut through
24:19these tough stems.
24:21I'm going to strip
24:22all of the leaves.
24:25Like that.
24:29Perfect.
24:33I've collected
24:33enough now
24:34and there's
24:35an added bonus.
24:39This mushy pulp
24:40that just fell out
24:41the middle
24:41in a snap kit.
24:44It's heart of palm.
24:46Heart of palm
24:47is a reliable
24:48food here.
24:49It's an abundant
24:50source of calories
24:51and contains
24:52fibre and vitamins.
24:55This is OK
24:57for now
24:57but to feel
24:58like I'm thriving
24:59I need a balanced diet
25:01with enough carbs,
25:03fat
25:04and protein
25:05so I must
25:06catch fish.
25:08I'm heading back
25:09to start building
25:10my trap.
25:11what is this?
25:26This here
25:27is peccary here
25:28and peccary
25:28are the pigs,
25:30the wild pigs
25:31around here.
25:32This is obviously
25:33a kill site.
25:34There's like some
25:34teeth or some
25:36bones or something
25:37there.
25:37The only thing
25:40that could kill
25:41peccary around
25:41here would be
25:43a puma
25:43or jaguar.
25:46It needs to be
25:47a bit careful.
25:49Jaguars are the
25:50largest cat
25:51in this region.
25:52They have powerful
25:53jaws which can
25:54crush skulls
25:55and they may
25:56attack trespassers
25:58in their territory.
25:58That could include
26:02me.
26:04But I don't think
26:06big cats will
26:06come near the fire.
26:08I need to make
26:09sure it doesn't
26:10go out.
26:17Okay, to start
26:18off this fish trap
26:19I'm going to make
26:19a circle about
26:21this bee.
26:21And now I'm
26:25going to attach
26:26a load of
26:27prison cell
26:30bars I suppose.
26:31I'm making the
26:32jungle version
26:33of a classic
26:34bottle trap.
26:37It's a cone
26:38of split palm
26:39stems,
26:40sealed at one
26:40end and open
26:41at the other
26:42with a ring of
26:43inward facing
26:44leaves at the
26:45open end.
26:46A fish is
26:47attracted by
26:47bait inside,
26:49swims in
26:49through the hole
26:50and is then
26:51prevented from
26:52swimming out
26:53by the leaves.
26:55Okay, that's
26:56the startings
26:57of my trap.
26:59The theory of
27:01this trap is
27:01simple, but
27:03making it
27:03certainly isn't.
27:09I've been at
27:10it seven hours.
27:13It's still not
27:14finished and
27:15eventually I'm
27:16defeated by
27:17darkness.
27:20everything takes
27:22longer than you
27:22think around
27:22here.
27:25I could do
27:26with some
27:26fish.
27:27I could do
27:27with some
27:27fish now.
27:28That would be
27:28really good.
27:29good morning.
27:44Just making
27:44the finishing
27:45touches to the
27:46fish trap.
27:47nice one.
28:06I need to add
28:08some bait.
28:10Termites will
28:11do the job.
28:11the river has
28:21stopped rising,
28:22but it's still
28:23flowing fast.
28:25I don't think I
28:26could put my
28:26little fish trap
28:27on that.
28:28However, this
28:29little stream I
28:29think is perfect
28:30for little fish.
28:31And I'm going to
28:32put my fish trap
28:32pretty much at the
28:33entrance of this
28:34little stream.
28:35The great thing
28:37about traps like
28:38this is they
28:39carry on working
28:40while you're
28:40doing other
28:41things.
28:42Efficient and
28:43essential for
28:44long-term living
28:45in the jungle.
28:47One fish trap
28:48set.
28:50Excellent.
28:50Excellent.
28:50I've been here
29:05for eight days
29:06and it's rained
29:07for six of them.
29:10I've never known
29:11rain like it,
29:12honestly.
29:13I spent two and
29:14a half years in the
29:15Amazon.
29:15I have never
29:16known rain like
29:18this.
29:20The rain isn't
29:21warm.
29:22The rain is
29:22cold.
29:25I'm talking
29:25about the fire.
29:26That's all I can
29:26say.
29:27Well, and the
29:27shelter obviously
29:28but without the
29:29fire and the
29:29shelter I would
29:30be in trouble
29:31or I really
29:31would.
29:34My hard work
29:35is paying off.
29:36I've got enough
29:37wood to keep
29:38warm and my
29:39shelter's keeping
29:40me dry.
29:42But I'm still
29:43hungry and want
29:44something other
29:45than palm hearts.
29:48There's nothing
29:49in the fish trap
29:49yet so I'm
29:50going to try
29:51something radical.
30:05In the past,
30:07I've found crabs
30:08hiding in sunken
30:09logs.
30:10The current
30:11is quite strong.
30:13With the water
30:14moving so quickly,
30:16this is a very
30:17risky strategy.
30:20nothing.
30:37Nothing.
30:41Pitting cold.
30:43I'm going to have another hungry night.
30:50But that's something I'm used to.
30:57To live off the land, you've got to be adaptable,
31:01staying balanced in the face of challenging situations.
31:08You can battle against nature, can't you?
31:10Or you can smile and surrender to it.
31:16And the latter is so much easier.
31:19Because you can't change nature, you can't change the weather,
31:22you can't change anything.
31:26So if you just accept it,
31:29suddenly there isn't a problem anymore.
31:40It's sunny this morning.
31:48Fingers crossed it's going to stay that way today.
31:51I'm just going to go and check the fish traps
31:54and see if we've caught anything.
31:54We've got one.
32:19One tiny little fish.
32:21This tiddler won't replace the energy I used to build the trap.
32:30But he will make a tasty lunge.
32:35First, I need more firewood.
32:37Wow.
32:43That's a feeling I haven't felt in a long time.
32:48Oh, sunshine.
32:50Happy days.
32:51And look at the tapui.
32:54That is beautiful.
32:57This is the first sun there's been for days.
33:01And the wood in the clearing has dried nicely.
33:03This here, if I'm not mistaken, is, um...
33:19It looks like jaguar fizzies.
33:22It looks like jaguar scat.
33:27It's definitely a carnivore.
33:29It's got peccary hairs in it.
33:30That's jaguar, 100%.
33:33That is jaguar.
33:37I'm on my own.
33:39With no backup.
33:41I'm not going to hang around.
33:45I've learned in survival situations
33:47that you've got to stay alert
33:49and trust your senses.
33:52Right now,
33:53I know something's not right.
34:06There's a big animal around here.
34:10You know that smell you get at the zoo?
34:14Unmistakably animal.
34:15It's here.
34:24I don't know whether that'll be a jaguar.
34:27But there's a big,
34:28there's a big mammal here.
34:30Let me smell it.
34:30I'm Ed Stafford.
34:40I'm alone,
34:41miles from anywhere,
34:42and I'm worried
34:43there's a jaguar on my tail.
34:46I'm heading back to my camp
34:47as fast as I can.
34:49It's here.
34:50Let me smell it.
34:52Whatever's out there in the jungle
34:53stays in the shadows.
34:55But I've got an unsettling feeling
34:57I'm being watched.
35:06It's good to be back here.
35:08And now,
35:09I'm seriously looking forward
35:10to my fish lunch.
35:15Barbecued spread.
35:22Might be small.
35:24But that is delicious.
35:27Fish.
35:30Well,
35:30let's hope we get some more.
35:34I bet that was less than 20 calories.
35:37I'm still hungry.
35:40Keeping a wary eye out for jaguars,
35:43I'm collecting yet more palm hearts.
35:46But to feel like I've really thrived here,
35:48I must eat something more substantial.
35:51I'd hoped to avoid this.
36:00I left the guts of the giant rodent
36:02up by the waterfall a week ago.
36:07That's very minging.
36:11Oh, my God, that stinks.
36:13That's really, really.
36:16That says it's the fat boy's maggot.
36:18There's no way I'm eating the rotting guts.
36:24But these maggots are rich in protein,
36:27so I've got a tough decision to make.
36:29Do I use them for bait or dinner?
36:32I've been debating about these maggots.
36:42I was thinking,
36:43right, if I put maggots in a fish trap,
36:48they're just going to get washed away.
36:49And if they're wrapped up in the leaves,
36:51nothing's going to see them or find them.
36:53So I thought, well,
36:54I've got them now.
36:55Why not try roasting the maggots?
37:04While the maggots are cooking,
37:06I'll have a palm heart starter.
37:09It's hot.
37:11I've never roasted them before.
37:16Moment of truth.
37:20Delicious.
37:21Oh, it really is tasty.
37:28That's like, um...
37:31Vaguely like a soft cheese.
37:36That works.
37:38Now for the main course,
37:41the protein-rich, fire-steamed maggots.
37:48Oh, they pop in your mouth.
37:51Pretty good.
38:02Quite creamy.
38:05A little bit sweet.
38:07Perfect pudding.
38:08A bit like rice pudding, really.
38:10A bit like rice pudding if it was...
38:16in a little snack form.
38:18I've been in the Venezuelan jungle for nine days.
38:31And this is my last night here.
38:36Could you live out here permanently?
38:39I think you could.
38:40But it would be a tough life.
38:46I mean, there's all the dangers here.
38:48There's jaguars.
38:48There's venomous snakes.
38:50But also, probably one of the biggest ones here
38:53was hypothermia.
38:56It has been hard.
38:58But, um...
38:59What would be the point
39:01if it wasn't outside my comfort zone?
39:03What would be the point
39:04if it wasn't testing me
39:06beyond what I've already experienced?
39:12Starting to spit with rain again.
39:15It would have been wrong for it not to, I think.
39:20Just to remind me where I am.
39:22Good morning.
39:40It's day ten.
39:45It's day ten.
39:47Ten days in the wettest, coldest, dampest
39:53environment so far.
39:58And you've done it.
40:00I've got to, um,
40:02pack the camera kit up.
40:04Check the, um...
40:06Check the fish draft one last time.
40:09See if I've got a breakfast.
40:10Hang on.
40:20There's something in here.
40:32Yes!
40:36Got a catfish.
40:38Got a catfish.
40:39Oh, and there's another one in there as well.
40:50That's incredible.
40:51I've got two fish.
40:53Great fish!
40:55These fish are the proof
40:57that this method really works.
41:00With more time,
41:01I'd have more traps
41:02and all the fish I need.
41:05A balanced diet
41:05is the key to thriving here long term.
41:09After all this time,
41:11my luck has come right at the end.
41:13How incredible.
41:15Catfish for breakfast.
41:16Oh, it's delicious.
41:21Oh, it's delicious.
41:23Absolutely delicious.
41:25When you eat something
41:27which has clearly got
41:28omega oils in it
41:30and protein in it,
41:32you can feel
41:33wearing back into action
41:35and starting to come alive.
41:37Oh, that makes me so happy.
41:42That makes me so happy.
41:48All it's taken is a couple of fish
41:50and everything has changed
41:52for the better.
41:52I feel comfortable here.
41:55I feel like this is my home.
41:56I feel safe.
41:58I feel in control.
41:59I feel well fed.
42:01I feel dry and warm.
42:05It feels like home.
42:06It does.
42:07It has started to feel like home.
42:09But just as I start
42:14to reach a state
42:15of complete happiness,
42:17I hear the noise
42:19that means
42:20this amazing experience
42:21is about to end.
42:25I can feel that vibration
42:27through the trees.
42:28That is the sound
42:29of the helicopter arriving.
42:31I need to get out of the trees
42:32and make myself present
42:33right now.
42:34Goodbye, little shelter.
42:36You've done me so well.
42:40Taxi.
42:45Helicopters are circling overhead.
42:52Yeah, they see me.
42:53I'm going home.
42:55I am going home.
43:02Hello, mate.
43:16This has been one
43:17of the toughest trips I've had.
43:21But after a shaky start,
43:23I'd found water,
43:25built a strong shelter,
43:27made fire,
43:29and with time
43:30to build more fish traps,
43:31I'd have a sustainable,
43:33balanced diet.
43:35I believe I could
43:37thrive here long term,
43:39but feel lucky
43:40to have had even 10 days
43:41in such an extraordinary place.
