In Norway (Season 2, Episode 6), Ed Stafford faces his first major cold-region challenge. He’s dropped on a snow-covered mountain in the western fjords, close to the Arctic Circle. With no tools, no knife, no food, nothing except his camera (and emergency gear), he must build fire on soggy ground, construct shelter capable of keeping out cold and wind, and guard against hypothermia. On top of that, rising spring tides threaten his shelter. This episode tests Ed’s resilience in freezing cold, damp conditions, unstable terrain, and relentless environmental stress.

00:00this time it's all change as I head north towards the Arctic Circle this is very different to
00:10anything I've ever done before my survival skills are pushed to the limit when I'm plunged into
00:16freezing temperatures your spine starts shivering it chills you to your very core hunger forces me
00:24to eat anything I can find it's got sand in it and my shelter against the icy cold brings nothing but
00:33trouble I'm Ed Stafford I've walked the length of the Amazon and survived on a desert island with
00:41only a camera to film my adventure now I've set myself a new challenge to prove I can make it
00:50in some of the world's toughest environments oh my god using only what I find around me
00:57already had a kidney and a bit of liver I'll be left completely alone for just over a week with
01:03nothing words cannot describe how I feel right now no film crew no food no water the sun is directly
01:11overhead it's boiling hot not even a knife right come on Ed go move on this time it's about more
01:18than survival I want to see if I can thrive yes anywhere I'm in Norway and it's the first time ever
01:35marooned has come to a truly cold climate the Scandinavian winter can be a killer and I'm way out of my comfort
01:44zone for the first time I'm being allowed to wear a full set of clothes because without them I just
01:50wouldn't survive it but I've got nothing else to help me not even a knife let's go I'm on Norway's
02:01rugged west coast my destination is a remote mountainous area in Nordland approximately 100
02:08kilometers south of the Arctic Circle this is the land of snow and ice where freshwater lakes freeze
02:18and stunning fjords give way to massive mountains
02:23I'm being dropped at one of the highest points in this inhospitable landscape
02:30from now on it's just me my camera equipment and my emergency kit
02:41okay that's the last time I'm gonna see anybody for well over a week
02:47right this is different this is very different to anything that I've ever done before
02:59um there's a little panic going on in my brain right now
03:03I'm a tropical guy I'm at home in the jungle and I'm on top of a mountain
03:08as ever the aim here isn't just to survive it's to thrive um
03:16why are you laughing Ed oh my god right
03:21in order to attempt to survive let alone thrive the survival priorities remain the same water food fire
03:31shelter I need to get down off this mountain before evening kicks in before the winds come
03:38before the weather changes I need to get into the tree line I need to look for the materials to make
03:44myself fire this is gonna be some sort of challenge it really is at this time of year nighttime temperatures
03:52can drop as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius even with clothes I'm still at serious risk of hypothermia and
03:59could get frostbite and physical exertion means dehydration is a real threat fire is absolutely vital but
04:10there's no chance of making it up here it sounds weird but one thing I have to be
04:16slightly careful of is not to overheat if I start sweating in this environment and my
04:20underlayer gets wet once I stop that could easily freeze to my body then I'm in real trouble
04:27this is the season for avalanches so I have to tread carefully
04:33actually quite steep
04:39just kicking steps into the snow
04:42the climb down is taking much longer than I hoped forever wanting to conserve energy I'm just going to
04:59experiment with the glissading or sliding down on my bum basically let's have a go
05:06not going terribly fast just here oh nice
05:18save a bit of energy
05:30starting to get to the edge of the snow now
05:38I don't like letting apprehension get the better of me but I'm starting to get a little bit agitated
05:47water is essential I could eat snow but it would lower my core temperature and my body would use up vital calories melting
06:05this moss
06:12this moss holds a huge amount of water
06:14which is actually a very good drink
06:21first survival priority
06:24sorted
06:25oh thank you thank you thank you thank you now I really need to think ahead to tonight I have to focus on making a fire or I might freeze
06:37I hadn't realized how dehydrated I was I think just coming down that mountain I've sweated quite a lot I can feel the sweat that's on my body starting to chill
06:49as usual in my bag I've got my spare camera but nothing to help me survive unless my life is in real danger
06:58I've got an emergency medical kit I've got emergency communications
07:02the other thing I've got is a self-heating blizzard blanket
07:07essentially when this is exposed to the air has the ability to heat my whole body up if I start going into hypothermia
07:14but I'm determined not to use any of it unless it really is an emergency
07:21so I need fire before it gets colder tonight
07:25immediately I'm finding things like this
07:30this is old man's beard
07:32I want to make an amazing little tender bundle
07:34and help me getting a fire going
07:36which is my absolute priority right now
07:39it's dangerous and close to getting dark now
07:51maybe an hour and a half left of light
07:55all I've got is old man's beard so far
07:59this here is silver birch
08:10the layer underneath the bark is really flammable
08:15it's got a very flammable resin in it
08:17so I can use this as tinder as well
08:19what I really want for my tinder bundle is grass
08:25dry grass
08:27but round here it's all soaking wet
08:30it's been under the snow all winter
08:34it's absolutely saturated
08:37I'm not going to get a fire going tonight
08:40I just know it
08:41but I'm going to pick some
08:44and I'm going to stick it down my trousers
08:47and I'm going to use the heat of my body
08:50tonight
08:51to dry the grass
08:53okay
08:56and I have grass down my pants
09:00at the moment I'm hot
09:12so all my thermals are damp
09:15and I'm about to have to
09:16spend the night without fire
09:18very close to the arctic circle
09:23and there's snow everywhere
09:25I've burnt a huge amount of calories
09:29getting down from the mountain
09:30I'm going to use a lot more tonight
09:33staying warm without a fire
09:35my reserves are already sapping
09:38I don't really want to descend anymore
09:40I need to find a place
09:42to stop
09:44let me put this into night vision mode
09:49I found a little dry patch of moss
09:53in the underneath the trees over there
09:55I'm just going to tuck myself there for the night
09:57I'm very exposed
09:59I'm very out on a limb
10:00the temperature's dropping
10:03and I'm going to be sleeping
10:05on a cold floor
10:06clearly my main fear is just temperature tonight
10:15I've never spent a night
10:17very close to the arctic circle
10:20without a fire
10:22or a sleeping bag
10:23with some means of staying warm
10:25aside from the clothes I'm wearing
10:27and it's daunting beyond anything
10:30that I've done on this show before
10:31it's not going to be a pleasant first night
10:35is it?
10:43I must have been lying down
10:45for at least an hour
10:45and I'm now really really cold
10:48so press up time
10:50I'm Ed Stafford
10:54it's my first night
10:55out in the open
10:56in Norway
10:57the temperature is below freezing
11:00I've got no shelter
11:02no food
11:03and more importantly
11:04no fire
11:05I'm fully clothed
11:09but that won't stop me getting hypothermia
11:12down on a little night walk
11:15which I don't normally do actually
11:17I'm keeping myself warm
11:20and it is working
11:21my mission is to thrive here
11:24but right now
11:26my focus is on pure survival
11:28night one over
11:29thank goodness
11:32I've never been more relieved
11:35to see daylight
11:36after a night
11:41exposed to the elements
11:42my main priority
11:43is still
11:44to make fire
11:45I can't stay here
11:49for another night
11:50because I haven't got
11:51the materials
11:53that I need to let the fire with
11:54so I need to push on
11:56the stream
12:01to my left
12:02I'm just following it down
12:04the stream
12:07the stream will lead me
12:07to lower ground
12:08I'm hoping
12:09there will be less snow
12:11and more firewood
12:12I can hear the sound
12:16of a small waterfall
12:19ahead
12:19there's a little chasm
12:26opening up
12:27opening up
12:27in front of me
12:29look at that
12:36it widens up
12:42into a proper fiore
12:43there's a very thin layer
12:49of ice
12:50on the surface
12:51of the water
12:51it was definitely
12:54below freezing
12:55last night
12:56to escape
12:59the worst of the snow
13:00I've come down
13:01off the mountain
13:02into the tree line
13:03and I've now arrived
13:04at the upper reaches
13:05of a tidal fjord
13:07to make the most
13:10of what little sun
13:11there is
13:11I'll set up camp
13:13on the south facing
13:14bank
13:14well above
13:15the high tide line
13:16fresh water here
13:23heather under my feet
13:26trees to build
13:28shelter with
13:28and elevation
13:30to keep me out
13:31of the high tide
13:33I think this is perfect
13:36now I really do need
13:42to make a fire
13:43the grass that I collected
13:46yesterday
13:46you can hear it
13:48it's crispy
13:49that has dried
13:52amazingly next to my body
13:53right I'm gonna put it
13:55back there
13:55until I need it
13:57I've got to find
14:01something to light it with
14:02I don't rate my chances
14:05of rubbing sticks together
14:06in this damp environment
14:07but I see some rocks
14:11that might just
14:12hold the answer
14:13that is a decent bit
14:17of red rock
14:18that has iron oxide
14:20in it
14:21but the rocks
14:24on their own
14:24aren't enough
14:25okay
14:38I don't know what that is
14:41literally just
14:44pulled this out of the beach
14:46but that's metal
14:48this is a fire kit
14:50it may not be conventional
14:52it's not a
14:53fire by friction
14:54fire kit
14:55this is much more simple
14:56if I can get it to work
14:57this is literally
14:59striking one against the other
15:00creating a spark
15:01if I can get a spark
15:03and I can catch that spark
15:06on a dry bit of fungus
15:07that's it
15:08you got an ember
15:09I know this method
15:16of striking metal
15:17against rock works
15:18but I've never had to do it
15:20when it really matters
15:21the sparks are almost
15:30too small to see
15:31and one has to land
15:33on the fungus
15:34for this to work
15:35when the sun goes down
15:46the temperature's gonna drop
15:48I can't stay awake again
15:50I'm trying to keep warm
15:52even if this takes
15:53all afternoon
15:54I have to get a fire
15:56before tonight
15:57it's got one
16:07right
16:12tinder bundle
16:13it's very small
16:26for the moment
16:27just letting the ember grow
16:29yes
16:39fire
16:43fire fire
16:45that took a long time
16:50that took much longer
16:53than I thought it would
16:53to keep this fire burning
17:00I need lots of wood
17:02I don't have an axe
17:05and I can't find
17:06any suitable stone
17:07to make one
17:08having a little bit
17:11of a deliberation
17:11about my fire
17:12everyone who advised me
17:14before they heard
17:15that I was doing
17:15my first cold weather
17:16marooned
17:18said you need to make
17:19a full length
17:20body fire
17:22i.e. the full length
17:24of your body
17:24lots of logs
17:25stacked up
17:26one on top
17:27of each other
17:28and literally
17:28the full length
17:29of the log
17:29is burning
17:30this is a classic
17:32survival fire
17:33for freezing conditions
17:34it kicks out
17:36loads of heat
17:37but uses
17:37a lot of wood
17:39usually
17:41I make a star fire
17:42where logs
17:43are fed
17:44into the centre
17:44it's efficient
17:45and uses
17:46minimal fuel
17:47if I had an axe
17:52I totally agree
17:53I'd make a big
17:54long fire
17:54and I'd burn logs
17:55one on top
17:55of the other
17:56however
17:59I don't have an axe
18:00so I'm going to
18:01break convention
18:02even though
18:02I'm in a cold
18:03weather environment
18:04I'm going to
18:04stick to a star fire
18:05because I just
18:06haven't got the wood
18:07to do otherwise
18:07really
18:08at least I've got
18:10a steady source
18:11of heat
18:12even if it's not
18:13as big
18:14as a
18:14as a full body fire
18:16if I can build
18:20a shelter
18:21and get off the ground
18:22I might just be
18:23warm enough tonight
18:24but again
18:25without an axe
18:26everything takes
18:27forever
18:28this whole shelter
18:31is going to be
18:32built out of
18:32dead wood
18:33and it's just
18:33a case of
18:34going and
18:34finding it
18:35and dragging
18:35it by
18:36I wish
18:38I had
18:39an axe
18:39this front pole
18:45in here
18:45is obviously
18:46far too long
18:47so I'm just
18:48going to put it
18:49on the fire
18:49and burn it
18:50through
18:50that's the only
18:51way I've got
18:51of cutting big
18:52logs
18:52is to literally
18:54put them on the fire
18:55and burn straight
18:55through them
18:56there's no way
19:02I'm going to finish
19:03this shelter today
19:04but I definitely
19:05can't sleep
19:06on the ice cold
19:07floor again
19:08okay I'm trying
19:12to use the remaining
19:12light to make
19:13the basics
19:14of a raised bed
19:15I raised both ends
19:17with big rocks
19:19and there's going
19:20to be logs
19:20making the platform
19:21of the bed
19:22then I'm going
19:23to put spruce
19:24on it
19:25then heather
19:26and it should
19:26bake a nice
19:28comfy mattress
19:29the juniper
19:33that I've just
19:35been using
19:36to make my
19:37mattress out of
19:37has little
19:39berries on it
19:40wow they're like
19:43berries that
19:44taste of
19:45Christmas trees
19:45but it's well
19:47into day two
19:48and this is the
19:49first food I've
19:50come across
19:51so I'm grateful
19:52juniper
19:54bedding
19:55and a meal
19:57in one handy
19:57plant
19:58time
20:00to give it a go
20:01oh yeah
20:08I'm off the ground
20:11isn't it nice
20:15when your face
20:16glows orange
20:16at night
20:17I've got a fire
20:19going
20:19I've got a bed
20:21I'm off the floor
20:22and I've got a
20:22mattress
20:23what more
20:24could I want
20:24a roof
20:27it's been cloudy
20:30all day
20:31if it rains
20:32I am in a bit
20:33of trouble
20:33do you know
20:49what
20:49that was one
20:51of the best
20:51night's sleep
20:52I think I can
20:54ever remember
20:54having
20:55of course
20:58I had to get up
20:58to tend the fire
20:59but this
21:00is a comfy bed
21:01when the shelter
21:03is complete
21:03this is going
21:04to be a perfect
21:05little spot
21:06although I still
21:09need to finish
21:10my shelter
21:11it'll have to
21:12wait
21:12it's day three
21:14and I'm hungry
21:15a lot of the
21:18snow around here
21:19has turned to
21:20ice now
21:21so it's very
21:22difficult to
21:23walk over
21:24without sliding
21:25I haven't seen
21:29any sign of
21:30animals near my
21:30camp
21:31so I'm going
21:32to explore the
21:32area to see
21:33if I can find
21:34something else
21:34to eat
21:35I have to admit
21:47I was quite excited
21:49for a little while
21:50then
21:50I thought I was
21:53filming tadpoles
21:54below the ice
21:55but it's just
22:01water droplets
22:01there's no
22:03tadpoles at all
22:03that would have
22:07been food
22:07but it was an
22:09optical illusion
22:10probably caused
22:11by my lack of
22:12food
22:13and my
22:14hoping for
22:16tadpoles
22:16that little
22:33crevice there
22:34there's some
22:36ferns
22:37and I'm pretty
22:38sure that the
22:39only fern around
22:39here has got an
22:41edible root
22:42and at the
22:45moment I'm
22:45quite low
22:46on carbs
22:46sometimes you
22:48just need
22:48simple
22:49straightforward
22:50energy
22:50taste of
23:03licorice sticks
23:04it's quite
23:08plentiful
23:09which means I
23:10should be able
23:10to get
23:10quite a lot
23:12of carbs
23:12inside me
23:13that was a
23:14good find
23:14it'll have to
23:19do for today
23:20I've got to
23:21finish my shelter
23:22before dark
23:22but when I get
23:25back
23:25I'm in for a
23:26shot
23:27an unexpected
23:28spring tide
23:29that is a
23:33very very
23:34very high tide
23:35what was a
23:38little
23:38meandering stream
23:40that you could
23:40just hop across
23:41no way
23:43I'm kind of
23:46praying that
23:47that's not going
23:47to get any higher
23:48because if it
23:49gets any higher
23:49I'm going to be
23:50flooded
23:51I'm in Norway
24:01this is the
24:02first time I've
24:03ever tried to
24:04thrive let alone
24:05survive in a
24:06truly cold climate
24:07and I've just
24:09had a very
24:10close shave
24:11I'm only just
24:14above the
24:15high high tide
24:15I'm quite
24:17pleased I
24:18decided to
24:19build my
24:20camp where I
24:21did
24:21I was very
24:23close to be
24:23building it
24:24on the dry
24:25grass which
24:26is now
24:26underwater
24:26that's pretty
24:31impressive actually
24:32I have to say
24:32look at that
24:34expanse of
24:35water
24:35pretty magical
24:38so far
24:43I've found
24:44water and
24:45built half
24:46a shelter
24:46but I'm
24:48worried the
24:48fire I've
24:49made isn't
24:49going to
24:49keep me
24:49warm
24:50it's not
24:51burning nearly
24:52as efficiently
24:52as I'm
24:53used to
24:53the wood's
24:56dry enough
24:56but the
24:57problem is
24:58the ground
25:00around here
25:01is absolutely
25:02sodden
25:02and I think
25:03the moisture
25:03is just being
25:04soaked up by
25:04the fire and
25:05just killing
25:05any inherent
25:06heat
25:07I need to
25:09find a way
25:10to make
25:11this work
25:11see this
25:17see this is
25:18right underneath
25:19where the fire
25:19was and
25:21it's wet
25:21it's actually
25:22it's not just
25:23damp
25:24that's ridiculous
25:26I need to get
25:27rid of all of
25:28this moss
25:28you know
25:35you know when you
25:35have a little
25:36niggle at the
25:36back of your
25:37mind but you
25:37ignore it
25:38and it
25:39causes to be
25:40slightly unsettled
25:41the fire
25:42had been one of
25:44those
25:44I can use that
25:46for my shelter
25:47by spending
25:51half an hour
25:51stripping away
25:52all the really
25:53sodden moss
25:55back to Bear Rock
25:56I can see the
25:58fire is happier
25:59that was time
26:05well spent
26:05with just
26:09three hours
26:10to sundown
26:11I need to
26:12finish my
26:13shelter
26:13this couldn't
26:15be more urgent
26:16I really need
26:17to get a roof
26:17above my head
26:18I suspect
26:19late this evening
26:21if not tonight
26:21we're going to
26:21get a heavy
26:22downpour
26:22the plan
26:24is to give
26:25it a really
26:25steep roof
26:26it needs to
26:27be 60 degrees
26:29from the floor
26:29this will shed
26:31rain and snow
26:32and reflect heat
26:33back onto me
26:34when I'm lying
26:34on my bed
26:35for the roof
26:40I'm using the
26:41moss I pulled
26:42up from beneath
26:43the fire
26:43it's heavy
26:45but should
26:46keep me dry
26:47it really is
26:49looking good
26:50and my only
26:53concern is that
26:54that bow
26:55is bending
26:57somewhat now
26:57okay this is
27:00nonsense
27:00I was going to
27:02put a strut in
27:02to support it
27:03there and then
27:03I thought
27:04oh no that
27:04won't look as
27:05good
27:05this isn't
27:06aesthetics is it
27:07this is not
27:08aesthetics
27:08if that breaks
27:09a full day's work
27:11is down the drain
27:12I'm going to put
27:17the support in
27:17just to make sure
27:18that that doesn't
27:19doesn't break
27:20ta-da
27:26look at that
27:27bad boy
27:28a raised bed
27:29a fire
27:30and a log cabin
27:31with a turf roof
27:32when in Norway
27:34and all that
27:35I'm quite happy
27:37with that
27:37almost four days
27:41in and I've got
27:42water shelter
27:43and fire
27:44but I've used a lot
27:46of energy
27:46and hardly eaten
27:47anything
27:48I'm not thriving
27:50I always go for
27:53a few days
27:54where I can use
27:55all the food
27:56inside my system
27:57and start burning
27:58body fat
27:59but I need to eat
28:00now
28:00tomorrow
28:03search for food
28:04because I'm hungry
28:08next morning
28:18I get a rude
28:19awakening
28:20ow
28:22ow
28:24ow
28:26oh
28:29shit
28:32shit
28:32shit
28:33I've just had
28:35a complete disaster
28:36the shelter's
28:38collapsed
28:39and it landed
28:40on my leg
28:41that's not good news
28:46that is not
28:47a good start
28:47to the day
28:48it's still sleeting
28:52I just need
28:53to get this
28:54shelter rebuilt
28:55as quickly
28:55as possible
28:56crikey
28:58do you know what
29:03I like a bit
29:04of a crisis
29:04I think I actually
29:06operate better
29:07when there's something
29:08that you need
29:09to deal with
29:09urgently
29:10otherwise
29:11things will go
29:12drastically wrong
29:13that's when I
29:14fire into action
29:15that's actually
29:17the moments
29:18of my life
29:18that I
29:19thrive
29:20look at that
29:26shelter
29:27that's better
29:29than it was
29:30before
29:30shelter rebuilt
29:32fire
29:34surviving just
29:36I can breathe
29:39again
29:39I can breathe
29:40I've never been
29:45to such a cold
29:46and damp
29:47country
29:48it chills you
29:49to your very core
29:50and your spine
29:52starts shivering
29:53I need to get
29:56back on track
29:56and search
29:57for more food
29:58I've just come
30:06down to the
30:07water's edge
30:07there's lots
30:09of shells
30:09around
30:09and if there's
30:11shells
30:11there's probably
30:12it probably
30:13means that
30:14there's seafood
30:14oh yeah
30:24well that
30:27in my hand
30:27is a sand flea
30:29it's food
30:31on a micro level
30:33it's food
30:34he always got away
30:41but he's
30:43retaining my teeth
30:43I know why
30:52they're called
30:52sand fleas
30:53they taste
30:54of sand
30:55there's little
31:02shells
31:04snails
31:07for supper
31:07I just found
31:17the two
31:17weirdest looking
31:18clams
31:19nice little
31:23addition
31:24to supper
31:24look at that
31:35the feast
31:37this is a bit
31:41weird
31:42this is
31:43definitely a bit
31:45weird
31:46this has come
31:47this has come
31:47out of the
31:47clam
31:49okay it's got
31:58sand in it
31:58I could tell
32:00I could tell
32:00that wasn't
32:01edible
32:01the moment
32:02we went through
32:03it
32:03that's just
32:06a bag of
32:07sand
32:07that however
32:12is sort of
32:14a bit like
32:16tripe
32:16isn't it
32:17I've got two
32:33of those
32:34to eat
32:34first
32:46first snail
32:46mmm
32:49tastes like seafood
32:56really good
32:58actually
32:5818 snails
32:59for supper
33:00actually
33:04surprisingly
33:04tasty
33:06it's actually
33:20snowing
33:21not raining
33:22today
33:22I sort
33:23of sleep
33:24who wants
33:27to get up
33:27in this
33:27sort of
33:28weather
33:28but if I
33:33want to
33:33thrive
33:33I can't
33:34just lie
33:35here
33:35I won't
33:36eat
33:36my fire
33:37will go
33:38out
33:38and I'll
33:39risk
33:39hypothermia
33:40okay
33:41I've got to
33:42do something
33:42about this
33:43fire
33:43at the
33:43moment
33:44partly
33:45because of
33:45the rain
33:46partly
33:46because of
33:46the cold
33:47partly
33:47because
33:47all the
33:47wood
33:48is
33:48damp
33:48the
33:49star
33:49fire
33:49method
33:50is
33:50just
33:50not
33:50it
33:51just
33:51I've
33:51got to
33:52acknowledge
33:52it
33:52just
33:52doesn't
33:52work
33:53so
33:54I'm
33:55going
33:55to
33:55try
33:55and
33:55make
33:55myself
33:56a full
33:56body
33:56length
33:57fire
33:58having
33:58said
33:59that
33:59I've
33:59never
33:59done
34:00it
34:00before
34:00okay
34:08I've
34:08got
34:08one
34:09two
34:09three
34:09four
34:10five
34:10six
34:10massive
34:11logs
34:12now
34:12all
34:13I
34:14need
34:14to
34:14do
34:14is
34:15lie
34:16two
34:16of
34:16them
34:16down
34:16on
34:17the
34:17floor
34:17remake
34:18the
34:18fire
34:18and
34:19fingers
34:20crossed
34:21we
34:21should
34:21have
34:21a
34:21more
34:21efficient
34:22system
34:22now
34:31I feel
34:32properly
34:33warm
34:33I
34:39came in
34:39here
34:40thinking
34:40I know
34:41fires
34:42a star
34:43fire
34:43suits
34:43every
34:44occasion
34:44and yet
34:45every bit
34:46of advice
34:46I told
34:46me
34:47before
34:47you need
34:47to make
34:47a longitudinal
34:48fire
34:48and I
34:49thought
34:49you know
34:49what
34:49that's
34:50not
34:50really
34:50necessary
34:50it
34:51just
34:51burn
34:51too
34:51much
34:52wood
34:52too
34:52quickly
34:52and it
34:54doesn't
34:55when it's
34:57really cold
34:57and damp
34:58this type
34:59of fire
34:59works
35:01and it's
35:03really cool
35:04to be humbled
35:05enough
35:06to learn
35:06something new
35:07it's really
35:08making me
35:09smile
35:09tomorrow
35:13I'm exploring
35:14and finding
35:15food
35:16anything that
35:17could help
35:17me
35:17not just
35:18survive
35:19here
35:19but end
35:19up thriving
35:20if I can
35:21end up
35:21thriving
35:22after my
35:23time here
35:24in Norway
35:24I'll be a
35:26happy man
35:26but the night
35:29brings an
35:29unwelcome
35:30surprise
35:31shit
35:35might have
35:49put a little
35:49bit
35:50too many logs
35:52on
35:52the fire
35:53normally
35:55I'd be really
35:56worried about
35:56that if my
35:57shells would
35:57caught on fire
35:58because it
35:58would go
35:58woof
35:59but um
36:01in this
36:03instance
36:03that sod
36:06and moss
36:06and it's been
36:07raining all
36:08night long
36:08it's never
36:09gonna go
36:10woof
36:11drama over
36:12drama over
36:14I've been
36:19in this freezing
36:20landscape for
36:21over a week
36:22I have fire
36:23shelter
36:24water
36:24and enough
36:26food to
36:26survive
36:27now I can
36:29afford to
36:29up my game
36:30and venture
36:30further afield
36:31I want to
36:33thrive
36:33ho ho ho
36:43there is a
36:45massive
36:45fjord
36:46look at
36:49how can I
36:51get down to
36:51it
36:52my fjord
37:01dries out
37:01twice a day
37:02so there
37:03isn't much
37:03seafood
37:04but this
37:05is a proper
37:06coastline
37:06and should be
37:07teeming with
37:08shellfish
37:08I've never
37:15seen so many
37:18mussels
37:19look at these
37:22these are not
37:31bad
37:31better than
37:33tiny little
37:34snails
37:34we can have a
37:42feast
37:42an absolute
37:44feast
37:45ok
37:48little addition
37:50to my final
37:51supper of
37:51mussels
37:51is a side
37:52salad
37:53this stuff
37:54is very
37:55edible
37:55and really
37:56really good
37:56for you
37:57sea lettuce
37:58seaweed
37:59and mussels
38:01at long
38:03at long last
38:03it's time
38:04to eat
38:04at long last
38:06it's time to eat
38:08I think a bit like
38:11potatoes
38:12seaweed needs to go on
38:13first
38:14because that needs a
38:14it's a bit of a
38:16roasting I think
38:17nice birch bark
38:20plates to put it all on
38:21hold myself a little
38:33kneel by this fire
38:34and open up
38:38the most
38:40fantastic
38:42looking
38:43mussels
38:45it just looks like
38:47proper food
38:48the amount of
38:50fat and protein
38:51in one of these
38:52mussels
38:52oh
38:56it is actually
38:58wonderful
38:59that is
39:01amazing
39:02they say that
39:04hunger is the best
39:05sauce
39:06crikey
39:07that is one of the
39:08best mussels
39:09I've ever had
39:10and my side salad
39:12is
39:14a Japanese
39:15speciality
39:16sea lettuce
39:20not bad
39:25ow
39:28flaming seaweed
39:33sounds like
39:36something
39:36batman would say
39:37it's been a pretty
39:44good
39:45and successful
39:46journey
39:46as far as
39:47fruits can
39:47said
39:47to have
39:49such a
39:51quantity
39:51of mussels
39:52and sea lettuce
39:53I could eat
39:54I could eat this
39:55until the cows
39:57come home
39:57it means that
40:01we could sustainably
40:03be here
40:04through all seasons
40:07lovely final supper
40:10I think part of thriving
40:18part of not just
40:19surviving
40:19is relaxing
40:20is being able
40:22to feel so secure
40:24in your state of play
40:25that you can do things
40:26that aren't
40:27actually essential
40:28you think it's time
40:30on this nice dry day
40:33to add a mattress
40:35topper
40:35to my spruce mattress
40:36this stuff here
40:41is so squidgy
40:42you can just put
40:43your face in it
40:43it feels like a big
40:44sponge
40:45or
40:46I don't know
40:47something that you'd
40:47wash yourself
40:48in the bathroom
40:48it's still a bit
40:52damp
40:52to the touch
40:53but
40:54I reckon
40:55by the fire
40:56it's gonna dry out
40:58and make a really
40:58really comfy bed
40:59I have a mattress
41:06topper
41:06toasty warm fire
41:08soft fluffy mattress
41:11morning
41:24it's my last day
41:28in Norway
41:29my fire
41:31kept me
41:32relatively warm
41:33but
41:35the whole
41:36of the beach
41:36is frozen
41:37I'm being picked
41:42up by boat
41:43and
41:43in order for the boat
41:44to know where I am
41:45I need to make
41:46a signal fire
41:47so
41:47I'm making myself
41:48a little ember carrier
41:50so that I can
41:51take my fire
41:52with me
41:52and when I get there
41:53I can light a signal fire
41:54this grass
41:57has been growing
41:57on the fire
41:58overnight
41:58and I'm just gonna
41:59twist it
41:59and make it
42:00really really tight
42:01so that it'll hold
42:02an ember
42:03simple tube
42:10made out of
42:10birch bark
42:11bend this bit
42:14and I just keep
42:15waving it around
42:16and keep it lit
42:17I'm going home
42:30I am going home
42:30life would be rubbish
42:40wouldn't it
