Transcript
00:00It's gone straight through the red line.
00:04You've got damage, you've got damage.
00:06Don't do that! Stay still!
00:08Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:10It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:15Turn over! You're under arrest.
00:17Intent supply class.
00:18You're drug.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25You've got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the UK's most dangerous roads.
00:30Oh, nobody's been killed out of this. I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast we're going?
00:35It's scary when stuff like this happens.
00:37In life and death situations.
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be tased!
00:41We've got runners.
00:43Face down!
00:46Yes, yes, successful sting.
00:49Around every corner.
00:51Great acting, mate.
00:54There's a new challenge.
00:56For the traffic cops.
00:57They've got a vehicle now!
01:01I'm going home.
01:02Stop grabbing me, like, up!
01:07It's crash, crash, crash!
01:09I've got it.
01:10Coming up.
01:11Open the door! Open the door now!
01:12Banned van drivers.
01:15Vehicle stopped.
01:17Put your arms around, I've seen, mate.
01:19Thieves on the run.
01:20It's got what looks like all this stolen gear inside.
01:23And repeat offenders.
01:25The licence.
01:27And genuinely, all my kids' lives didn't realise I was back or I would never have drove my vehicle.
01:31That is gospel.
01:32Caught red-handed.
01:34Have you got a drive in, Ashley?
01:35I'm not telling you.
01:36I'm not telling you.
01:37It is cops and robbers to them.
01:38Put your arms down.
01:39Whoa!
01:40He is intoxicating.
01:41He should be driving.
01:42Back up!
01:432-4-6.
01:44Any standing by?
01:45Yeah, go ahead.
01:46Head past 5-4.
01:47Just to let you know, we've had a look at the Shardlow services.
01:48That's clear.
01:49We're just coming to the Wellington services now.
01:50We'll have a look at that and update you.
01:51Yeah, that's received.
01:53A police helicopter and Derbyshire's traffic cops are looking for a stolen transit.
02:14Stolen from outside the owner's address without the keys.
02:19It's a white transit van with yellow chevrons on the back.
02:25Keyless thefts are quite common at the moment.
02:29Sergeant Scott Riley's leading the search.
02:32We're seeing gangs that are working together, travelling across the borders, coming from Sheffield,
02:40coming from West Yorkshire, coming from the bigger cities onto Derbyshire.
02:45We're just trying to do an area search at the minute to try and find the van.
02:52It won't have gone far.
02:54PC Alex Head is two miles in front.
02:57Alex, receiving.
02:59Hello?
03:00I've not got lots on.
03:01How many units have they got assigned to it?
03:03I think we've got four, three to four units.
03:06Sir Scott, three armed and the one making.
03:09Yes, yes, I'm happy that you go with them.
03:12They hit a few minutes ago now, five minutes ago, heading west down.
03:18No further hits or sightings.
03:2010 passengers for information and I'm receiving your downlink.
03:23I'll tell you.
03:24A transit van can be doing only between 70 and 100.
03:29We're pushing up to it all the time.
03:34How do you tango, sir?
03:36Go ahead.
03:38Whereabouts in the country was it stolen from?
03:41Is this a natural route back to that location at all?
03:45Stolen from.
03:47The van was stolen over 12 hours ago in Nottinghamshire
03:51and could have cloned plates to avoid detection.
03:55Alex, that's around the informant lane one.
04:05Shep, shep, shep, shep.
04:06Mates, got shep, shep, shep.
04:07Mates, got shep, shep, shep, shep, shep, shep.
04:08Mates, got shep, shep, shep, shep, shep, shep, shep, shep, shep.
04:09Half an hour behind you.
04:10If it changes the identity of van or swaps the number plates for a different van, then you're looking at something totally different.
04:17And quite often, you're looking at something which isn't what's been described to you.
04:23Ahead of Scott.
04:27Officers are tailing a suspect van, but it doesn't have any markings.
04:34They've got highway maintenance written on the back.
04:36I'm just obviously constantly changing plates.
04:38There can be a lot of red herons.
04:40After 20 minutes searching, there's still no sign of the transit.
04:54When you're looking for something, you really don't rule anything out until you're satisfied in your own mind that that's not what you're looking for.
05:02I'm very surprised we've not caught it by now.
05:05Another transit ahead, like I looked at Alex.
05:10Yeah, clear.
05:13Give the near side indication.
05:16It just come off. I can't see what it is.
05:21I'm off just to shake that one.
05:24Got no chevrons on the background.
05:27No chevrons on it, but I've got it. It's slowing.
05:30Wait for Mpass to get with me.
05:32It pulled up briefly. It's now moving off.
05:39We always crew on our own.
05:42And because I know that they're wanted for a crime, their desire to get away makes them more dangerous for me to deal with.
05:49And you have to know where your backup's coming from.
05:51You're under arrest on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. You do not have to say anything with my arm.
05:57I'm the first time I'm going to try a question. Some two inches later, a line in court.
06:02All right.
06:03Wait, you just angled me.
06:04My arm.
06:05My arm is in the air.
06:06Yeah, all right. Stay there.
06:07Stay calm. This car's reported or stolen, mate.
06:08This car's reported or stolen, mate.
06:10This car's reported or stolen.
06:11No, it's not me.
06:12No, it's been reported or stolen.
06:13No, it's not me.
06:14No, it's been reported or stolen, all right.
06:15Have you got to drive in, actually, buddy?
06:16I'm not telling you.
06:17Are you going to tell me your name?
06:18No, I'm not.
06:19Arrest, mate.
06:20I have arrested you.
06:21Go on.
06:22Get my arm out of here.
06:23Get me in that car, then.
06:24I'll do when somebody else comes.
06:25Yeah, hurry up, then.
06:26What do you need anyone else for?
06:27Eh?
06:28What do you need anyone else for?
06:29Of course I don't want to fight with the M2, right?
06:30You don't need to fight.
06:31I've got a heart problem, bro.
06:32I understand heart surgery.
06:33What's the rate of the **** for me?
06:34If you've got a heart problem, then, calm down.
06:35If you've got a heart problem, then calm down.
06:36I'm not, mate.
06:37I'm not.
06:38I'm not.
06:39I'm not.
06:40I'm not.
06:41I'm not.
06:42I'm not.
06:43I'm not.
06:44I'm not.
06:45I'm not.
06:46I'm not.
06:47I'm not.
06:48I'm not.
06:49I'm not.
06:50I'm not.
06:51I'm not.
06:52I'm not.
06:53If you've got a heart problem, then calm down.
06:54Get outside for me.
06:55Please, Swifty.
06:56While Scott deals with the driver, Andy arrives to assist.
07:01What's that for?
07:04It's for you.
07:06Head pass.
07:07We're overhead.
07:12What have you got in your pockets, um?
07:16Just one minute.
07:17Can you keep on with me?
07:18Yeah, yeah.
07:19No, it's going to hurt me.
07:20No.
07:21No shots, needles, knives, guns.
07:23I've got my sweet.
07:24Oh, no.
07:25What sweet has he gone for?
07:26I like a million.
07:27It is quite well known, Knox are telling me.
07:30Is there anything close?
07:32You got a talk?
07:33I know.
07:34Come in.
07:35Come in.
07:36I've got the last four of the Venus.
07:38Is that the one we're looking for, please?
07:39Anything in it, Tristan?
07:40Can't get it.
07:41No.
07:42Stolen this morning.
07:43Stolen from Mansfield.
07:44Keys not taken.
07:46And if recovered, preserved footprints.
07:49We've checked the VIN plate on the van and that van was stolen in Mansfield this morning,
07:53which is in Nottinghamshire.
07:55Um, it's not as described, it's not got the chevrons on it, but I think that's because
08:00it's on clone plates and I think that the genuine vehicle's probably got chevrons.
08:04We've got chevrons that's sent us slightly awry, but we've just caught it in time.
08:08Good job, that.
08:09Good.
08:10Good teamwork.
08:11It's estimated a thousand vans are stolen in the UK every month.
08:16The chap that I've got in the back of my car is a disqualified driver, quite well known
08:20to the police.
08:21The passenger's also been arrested, because we don't know at this stage whether he was
08:24or wasn't involved in the theft.
08:26This cops and robbers to them.
08:28As long as I've been a policeman, they've probably been stealing vans.
08:34Lovely mate.
08:35Have you got any jewellery on?
08:36No.
08:37Excellent.
08:38You didn't need that last time.
08:39What I did?
08:40No, not you.
08:41Oh, the police?
08:42Yeah.
08:43That one that was at the car earlier on.
08:44Oh, the Notts lad?
08:45Yeah.
08:46Yes, it did seem that he knew you.
08:48Yeah, he knows me very well.
08:49He said he knew you well.
08:51Yeah, he knows me very well.
08:52Just turn around for us, buddy.
08:54You get a certain type of offender that likes to steal vans and all they've ever done
08:59is steal vans.
09:00They know how to steal vans.
09:02It's their bag.
09:03They've got the contacts to move the vans on very quickly.
09:07That one.
09:08That one.
09:09South 12.
09:10No, it says it'll bail up.
09:12When an offender has got a pattern that they like and it's lucrative for them,
09:16there's nothing really to deter them.
09:19And they brought you on the sergeant.
09:21The chap's been arrested for theft of that motor vehicle from the offence this morning
09:25and disqualified driving.
09:27Unbelievably, he's got four days left to go on his van.
09:29So it's completely messed that one up.
09:32There you go.
09:33What are you doing here?
09:34He's now going to be banned for at least another 18 months even if he's not found you up to
09:37the staff.
09:38They'll bring you to me, hurry.
09:39Coming up.
09:40Back in the car.
09:41More thieves in vans on the run.
09:46It's got what looks like all this stolen gear inside.
09:51And a banned driver.
09:52He's intoxicated and shouldn't be driving.
09:53Shut up, Warner.
09:54Yes, you are.
09:55Testing the limits.
09:56You failed the roadside breath test.
09:57Oh, mate.
09:58You failed the roadside breath test.
09:59Oh, mate.
10:00You failed the roadside breath test.
10:01You failed the roadside breath test.
10:02Oh, mate.
10:03All that's about to be.
10:04OK, let's go.
10:05Go again with a full regs, please.
10:06And a, er, 0-4.
10:07We've just monitored on the local channel that there has been a domestic.
10:10The male's driven off and is intoxicated.
10:25Erm, she's described that he's driving a blue van.
10:30After capturing two suspected van thieves,
10:33Sergeant Scott Riley's back on patrol.
10:36Looking at the records as well,
10:38there's some suggestion that there's a disqualified driver,
10:41and he might be coming back towards the address.
10:43They could have another argument,
10:45so it's really important that we intercept him as soon as we can.
10:49The public expects the police to take action,
10:52so we take that duty very seriously
10:54and we will really up the ante to stop that person driving.
11:00So, we're just...
11:02Oh, what's this one?
11:12What's that?
11:19An A74.
11:22Going ahead?
11:24Yeah, I'm behind that vehicle.
11:2624, are you going to try and put a stop on it,
11:30or are you waiting to back up?
11:33Where does he live?
11:36Standby.
11:37The suspect's less than a mile away
11:39from where the alleged domestic took place.
11:42Yeah, 24, I'm going to put a stop in then,
11:44so he doesn't get into that address.
11:4724.
11:48Just confirm he's a disqualified driver.
11:51Yes, yes, he's a disqualified driver.
11:53Yes, yes, sir.
11:55Just going to put a stop in.
11:5724, mate, you're not on the log.
12:00271 travelling towards us.
12:03And a Tango 04.
12:05I know that potentially...
12:07Go ahead.
12:08..he's going to be quite violent.
12:10Yeah, the illuminated vehicle lights and sirens on.
12:12We're at low speed,
12:14but the vehicle is failing to stop at this time.
12:16Because I've been told he's drunk.
12:18OK.
12:22It may be that if he's intoxicated,
12:24he's not aware of me presence at this time,
12:26is driving still normal?
12:27He's probably trying to get to a certain place
12:29where he will have a certain amount of protection.
12:34Yeah, he's seen me now.
12:35He's put his address on.
12:37Still not stopping, though.
12:38I never know what I'm ultimately going into.
12:44Is this his home address?
12:48Erm...
12:50Goodbye.
12:51Goodbye.
12:58Put your arm down.
12:59Alright, mate.
13:00Alright, I'll be alright with you.
13:01Yep.
13:02Sorry, I was just pulled up here.
13:03Yeah, alright.
13:04Let go of me dog.
13:05Alright.
13:06Woah.
13:07Let go of me dog.
13:08I'm not taking the cheese.
13:09It's just...
13:10It's just a dramatic...
13:11It's a misunderstanding.
13:12But I need to speak to him.
13:13All I want is my phone.
13:14Alright.
13:15Give me my phone.
13:16Give me my phone.
13:17You come with me.
13:18Nobody's having anything at the minute.
13:19I'm intoxicated.
13:20Nobody.
13:21Back off.
13:22Back off dog.
13:23Can you back off, please?
13:24Yeah.
13:25You just stay there.
13:26Alright.
13:27Come this, come this.
13:28We'll put you in my car.
13:29We'll put you in my car.
13:30He's intoxicated.
13:31He should be driving.
13:32Shut up woman.
13:33Yes, you are.
13:34It's about to have you owned up to your actions, mate.
13:40So he's pinched on me and I'll...
13:42Safe and well, no.
13:43Yes, you did.
13:44You drove off with it and it's mine.
13:45Mate, which is your phone?
13:46Mate, that's mine, that's hers.
13:48Yes, you did.
13:49Is that your phone?
13:50Yes, that's mine.
13:51Yes, you did.
13:52Yes, you did.
13:53Domestic incidents are really difficult to deal with because there's two sides to every
13:57story and we know that.
13:59And if you're there on your own, you get two people screaming at you, telling you different
14:04versions of events at the same time.
14:07And they almost start fighting again because they're trying to get one over on the other,
14:11trying to tell you the information.
14:14Right.
14:15Yes.
14:16You're detained at this time because I believe you're a disqualified driver.
14:21What?
14:22Are you a disqualified driver?
14:23No, no, no.
14:24Oh, okay.
14:25Well, I can smell alcohol in your breath.
14:26Yep.
14:27You've obviously been driving that motor vehicle.
14:28Yep.
14:29So I'm going to require you to find me a special minute of breath for the purpose of analysis.
14:33Yep.
14:34If you know what I want you to do, form your ceiling around the end of the tube while
14:36I'll continue to breath until I say stop.
14:38Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
14:41And stop, stop.
14:43Ah, lovely.
14:47That is all.
14:49Hmm, 37?
14:50What?
14:51Okay, mate, you failed the roadside breath test with the result of 37.
14:55Yep.
14:56So I'm arresting you for driving whilst over the prescribed limit.
14:59Yep, of course.
15:00You do not have to say anything but it may harm me to certainly not make sure I'm in
15:02a question, something which later I only caught.
15:04Yeah, do you know what?
15:05If I knew I was overlooked, my dad died when I was five between driving.
15:07Oh, God.
15:08I've literally had two of the some uncomforting lemonades from the pet station.
15:12Are you sure you're not a disqualified driver?
15:15No.
15:16I believe you're a disqualified driver.
15:17No.
15:18But I will just check.
15:19Not yet, but...
15:20You are disqualified until...
15:22No.
15:23You are disqualified until the 26th of the 4th, 2024.
15:27Yep.
15:28So, sorry, lad.
15:29What?
15:30So, I'm further arresting you for driving a motor vehicle whilst disqualified.
15:34What?
15:35Um, the caution remains the same.
15:37The necessity test remains the same.
15:39Um...
15:40Also, what's going to happen is, I'm going to ask my colleague to seize your van under
15:43165 of the Road Traffic Act.
15:44Oh, I'm joking.
15:45Which means that we'll be taking the van from you to prevent you from using it whilst
15:49you're...
15:50100%.
15:51...not a licence holder.
15:52All right.
15:53Oh, mate.
15:54Oh, do you know what?
15:55The dissent...
15:56You know because that van's registered to my old house?
15:58On, um...
15:59Well, what does that tell you?
16:01Oh, mate.
16:02Do you know what?
16:03I apologise so bad.
16:04Yeah, that was...
16:05You must...
16:06You must know that you've done something to get your disqualified.
16:07What have you been disqualified for?
16:08I do.
16:09Well, my kids' lives...
16:10I don't know.
16:11As much as they tell me a story of woe in the back of the car, it's in hard evidence
16:17on our police systems when and where and why they were disqualified.
16:22Mate, you two come running round that corner in my van.
16:24I was like, I'm sorry!
16:26Well, you didn't stop, did you?
16:28Well, because I was so close to my house, I thought, just keep going.
16:31Keep going.
16:32Dead slow.
16:33With my hazards on.
16:34Why?
16:35Because I didn't think I was over the limit or banned.
16:37I thought, if I park it up outside the house, everything will be fine.
16:40I genuinely, all my kids' lives didn't realise I was banned or I would never have drove
16:44my vehicle.
16:45That is gospel.
16:48Hello, I've got a drink driver.
16:50Tap.
16:51A few.
16:54This way.
16:55Yeah, just go and sit on that bench for us, please, buddy.
17:02As well as an evidential breath test.
17:04So we'll just wait for our turn in the queue and then we'll get you in.
17:07The man faces questions about the allegations made by his partner.
17:11Right, listen to what I'm going to say.
17:12I'm further arresting you for a domestic assault.
17:14You do not have to say anything, but we may harm him so I won't mention any questions.
17:17We'll switch later on in court.
17:18Anything you do say may be given evidence.
17:20We'll need to interview you.
17:21Get your side of the story, because there's two sides of every story in there.
17:24All right, and we'll get you booked in.
17:26Just stand there in front of this sergeant here, please, mate.
17:32The necessity for the rest has been to bring him to this police station to do the evidential
17:36breathalyser procedure, and later on to interview him about that domestic assault.
17:41Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, stop. Excellent. Grab a seat.
17:53Unsurprisingly, 27.
17:55The man's blown under the legal drink drive limit of 35.
17:5913, 27.
18:01Right, we'll get out of here, yeah.
18:03But still faces prosecution for driving without a licence.
18:09Do you know, we can't do that at all.
18:11Once they are disqualified, or once they've had the licence taken off them,
18:14they still don't follow the rules, and they still don't take any responsibility,
18:18because they continue to offend.
18:20And I find that really frustrating.
18:22Yes, of course you can. Two blankets. All right.
18:25Yeah, Ford Connect white van.
18:34There are nearly four and a half million vans on Britain's roads.
18:38We've got a suspicious vehicle parked outside, commercial premises.
18:42And works vehicles are often targeted by thieves.
18:46Attempt theft from a van. Possible clone.
18:49With a van in the UK getting broken into every 23 minutes.
18:55Yeah.
18:56Yeah.
18:58Yeah.
19:00Yeah.
19:01Yeah.
19:02Yeah.
19:03Yeah.
19:04Yeah.
19:05Yeah.
19:06Yeah.
19:07Yeah.
19:08Yeah.
19:09Yeah.
19:10Yeah.
19:11Yeah.
19:12Yeah.
19:13Yeah.
19:14Yeah.
19:15Yeah.
19:16Yeah.
19:17Yeah.
19:18Yeah.
19:19Yeah.
19:20Yeah.
19:21Yeah.
19:22Yeah.
19:23So we just had a report of a ram raid coming in and we're just trying to figure out now
19:27what route offenders might take away from the scene so we can try and intercept them on their
19:32way out of the area. Generally the ram raiding is done by organised criminals. They'll steal the
19:39vehicle, change the plates on it or they'll very quickly just use that vehicle that they've stolen
19:45earlier that night to do the ram raid and then get away again quickly.
19:53On the other side of Derby, PC Nick Rice is also on the lookout.
20:05It is really annoying when you're searching around. There's just no sign of them. It's
20:15like they just vanish into thin air or they've got an invisible cloak on or something.
20:233.6, I'm at the exit on the A38 Stinger set up.
20:35Paddy covers a possible escape route with a Stinger.
20:38We've got vehicles behind it at the moment. We're just trying to work out whether to do,
20:44try and push it off on a certain exit for a Stinger.
20:50When you hear a job coming in like a ram raid or a pursuit,
20:53your heart rate just goes up that little bit more.
20:58Back in, back in. Criminals that are caught in the act of driving and getting away from
21:04a crime scene can often be the most dangerous we deal with.
21:12It's come off on a roundabout, but I couldn't hear which one.
21:14Other units are now behind the white transit.
21:17I'm approaching the roundabout, at the roundabout, on the roundabout, and it's the first person
21:25for the service of someone. Into the, uh, effective safety.
21:30Yeah, I've got to be back here.
21:36There comes that one.
21:37Slide up it.
21:38Open the door! Open the door now!
21:40Open the door now!
21:46One driver.
21:47As officers move in for an arrest...
21:50Vehicle's stopped. It's looking like it's on false plates.
21:52Paddy's playing catch-up.
21:54Yeah, receive what's here. Pop the reg, please.
21:56So we're just running the VIN to work out what the correct
22:00reg plate is and find out the true identity of the vehicle.
22:03Yeah, that's the area.
22:05This might have been telling you an arrest on suspicion of burglary.
22:12The reason for that is there's been a report of a burglary at premises in Derby
22:17with the vehicle mentioned, and we suspect that this vehicle and you were involved in that.
22:21I'm going to search you. Have you got anything on your, anything like sharp or anything like that?
22:23I don't know what it is.
22:25While Paddy searches the suspect, Nick checks the van.
22:29Numerous sets of plates in here. So he's obviously planning on either doing more jobs or
22:36trying to evade us by putting different plates on.
22:38It's on clearing plates. We've got that van back and there's every likelihood that we have
22:43disrupted some other crime happening tonight.
22:48Yeah, from Tango 39, there's electric tools and chains in the back as well, consistent with the report.
22:54Power tools. Oh, there's your chains.
22:57Fans pulled some doors off a storage container by the signs of it with these chains,
23:02and it's got what looks like all this stolen gear inside.
23:08Might be something in there, but nothing dangerous.
23:10Yeah, the wallet and stuff like that.
23:13Oh, that would be good.
23:16Very small amount of what was suspected to be cannabis.
23:20Are you further under arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance,
23:23namely cannabis?
23:24He's already failed to stop for police. We know he's been involved with this burglary.
23:29We start searching him and we find cannabis as well. You know, he's stacking up offences here.
23:34Yes, received. Thank you.
23:36Are you also further under arrest for driving a motor vehicle whilst he's qualified and without insurance?
23:40Caution still applies.
23:41He's just committing offences left, right and centre.
23:44You've been found in possession of cannabis and you've been driving that motor vehicle.
23:48So I suspect you could be driving that motor vehicle whilst all by the specified limit.
23:52Okay.
23:53I'm going to ask you to provide a sample of saliva.
23:55Failure to do so is an offence which you could be arrested for.
23:57Do you consent to provide a sample of saliva for me?
23:58Yes.
23:59I'll get you to stick your tongue out and then I'll swipe this on your tongue.
24:03Stick your tongue out. One, two, three, four, five, six.
24:08Driving under the influence of drugs, you are impaired in a similar way to drink driving.
24:14And then this takes eight minutes for the procedure to do it.
24:17Your reaction time that you can react to anything is massively reduced.
24:23We're going to go.
24:23All right.
24:24All right.
24:24I'll see you in a bit.
24:26All right.
24:26See you in a bit.
24:26See you in a bit.
24:27Obviously, with some of the drugs, you can get a confidence boost
24:31and you will try and drive beyond your capabilities.
24:35Right.
24:36Your drug rights come back positive for cocaine.
24:39So you're further under arrest on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle
24:43whilst over the specified limit for cocaine.
24:46And you're further under arrest as well on suspicion of driving that motor vehicle,
24:49which is suspected to be stolen.
24:51It's been a good job.
24:52Got the stolen van back, stolen property back.
24:54Got a male detained.
24:57Obviously, it's been disqualified previously by a court.
25:00And obviously, he's driving under the influence of controlled drugs.
25:03So he's a high risk road user who's off the road.
25:05So I feel good about that.
25:07He's done this before.
25:09So it's definitely a good one to have locked up.
25:11And we'll be able to just check each plate,
25:12see if he can tell us any more information about where that van's been.
25:15Tidy little job, really.
25:20Coming up.
25:21One running.
25:21The van.
25:22Suspected transit thieves on the run.
25:25Officer, we're detained there!
25:26Stealing to order.
25:28Stolen somebody's van, ripped it apart,
25:30and using it for whatever they want.
25:32And a banned van driver.
25:34We'll take a seat in my car.
25:35Refusing to learn his lesson.
25:37You only went to court two weeks ago,
25:38and now you're driving again.
25:39In the Midlands, a stolen white transit van's caught on CCTV.
25:46It's being used to burgle thousands of pounds worth of cable drums from a telecoms depot.
26:13The thieves split up and make off in a second vehicle.
26:27I'm assuming it's site security,
26:31then alarm monitor and CCTV monitor, but they're not on site.
26:34It's a part of the rest.
26:38Derbyshire's control updates units on alert for the suspect van.
26:42White van, two down to the roof, three cable drums, three offenders,
26:46no mention of weapons, damaging corners to get in.
26:50Tons of burning the convoy at the end of the year.
26:52We'll just go north and have a look round.
26:57PC Rebecca Callan is among the traffic cops keeping a lookout.
27:01You can hide a lot in the back of a van.
27:03If they want to go out and steal something,
27:05they've got quite a lot of space in the back of the van,
27:07haven't they, compared to a car?
27:12Minutes later, there's news of a possible sighting.
27:16There's been two vehicles hitting northbound within seconds of each other.
27:23We've got markers on from last night.
27:26It's morning involved in a burglary and cable fest.
27:29I don't know if anyone's in that direction.
27:32I'm going to start heading towards the M1.
27:34Obviously, it's likely stolen from somewhere.
27:37Further up the motorway, Paddy Shambrook joins Bex
27:40on the hunt for the suspect van and a black BMW.
27:44From 1-1, I'm at 29 now.
27:47Where are you, Paddy?
27:54They're right in front of us on the motorway.
27:57They look like they're still travelling together.
27:59They're amongst other members of the public.
28:02So how are we going to safely bring these to a stop?
28:05I'll join you now, Paddy.
28:15Committed committed M1 northbound between the slips at the moment.
28:18And in front of that is the BMWs.
28:22It's very difficult to stop two vehicles at the same time.
28:35Really, you have to decide which one you're going to go for.
28:38We're in lane three.
28:40Speed is 66.
28:41Yes, if we say we're knitting up front, though, could we?
28:44I'm on to a stop or not.
28:46Bex and Paddy prepare to box the van to a stop.
28:49OK, it's Stinger.
28:51Northbound opposite.
28:52It's 31.
28:53While other units cover motorway exits.
28:56Paddy, do you want to try and put a follow me on
28:59and I can stay behind them if they don't?
29:03Yeah, two points.
29:05It's got lots of cable inside.
29:07It's going to be really heavy, which sort of changes tactics.
29:10Put the follow me on.
29:13Got the BMW directly behind me.
29:15There's no reaction at the moment.
29:17Bex, have you got the vows in front of you?
29:20Yes, yes.
29:23Is there anything in between us?
29:27Negative.
29:28Yeah, two points.
29:30There are speed pilots here.
29:35I'm indicating lane two, I've got a follow.
29:38Indicating lane one, I've got a follow.
29:41Van's coming past you, Paddy.
29:44I'll get a follow and me in front of the van.
29:48The danger is that either the van fails to stop
29:52or the BMW fails to stop and causes carnage.
29:57Van's just come to a stop on the M1.
30:01Yeah, he's running.
30:03Yeah, you're at 8, 8, 1 running.
30:05Come back.
30:07Officer with a taser!
30:09Run after him, drawing my taser.
30:12What's happening, Paddy?
30:14I've got a driver for van.
30:19I don't know where BMW's gone.
30:21So the BMW's not with you?
30:23No, negative.
30:24I've gone after this driver I've got here, a taser.
30:28So I put my foot down, go and try and find it.
30:33As Beck searches for the BMW...
30:39Feet, hands up!
30:40Feet!
30:41Have you got anything on you?
30:44No, I've got anything on you.
30:45Back up arrives for Paddy.
30:47Right, just open your hands up like that so I can see them.
30:50You going to be alright with me mate?
30:52Yeah, yeah.
30:53Right, turn around mate, put your hands on your head.
30:56Mate, we're going to put some handcuffs on, you'll be alright?
30:58See you back.
30:59Have a seat in there for me.
31:01Yeah.
31:05Alright.
31:06While the van driver faces questions about the cable theft at the police station,
31:10Bex is looking for accomplices.
31:15There you go.
31:16Oh, he's going to have gone that way, isn't he?
31:20The BMW was registered to Doncaster.
31:24So I knew it would be going up the M1 and the M18.
31:29Nowhere to be seen now.
31:30It's...
31:31I don't think it's come along here.
31:33Although it had a couple of minutes head start, so...
31:36But never saw it again.
31:37Hey, can you let it start the auction now?
31:40We've lost the BMW.
31:41They did have some units.
31:45Bex joins Paddy to search the suspect van.
31:48Oh, wow.
31:49Paddy, there's still an address.
31:50Look at this.
31:51Still an address in the sat-nav.
31:52Right.
31:53It's still turned up, there's still an address.
31:54What's the address on?
31:55Can we just watch it while we're at?
31:56The sat-nav has still got its destination programmed in, so there's an inquiry there to
32:01make about the destination address in terms of its links to crime.
32:06And why are these people going back there?
32:07There's a cable that belongs to BT, so it'll mean that the van's overweight as well.
32:12And, yeah, high value stuff in there that they've stolen.
32:16These weigh half a tonne each, it says on there.
32:23Yeah, so it'll mean that the van's overweight as well.
32:26And, yeah, high value stuff in there that they've stolen.
32:31These weigh half a tonne each, it says on there.
32:33Yep, so they're not.
32:35The driver of this vehicle is already wanted for...
32:37..fail to appear for weaponry.
32:39The driver of this vehicle is already wanted for fail to appear, for weapon offences and disqualified driver as well.
32:52This is how they turn it on, with the screwdriver. That's basically the ignition on it.
32:59Stolen somebody's van, ripped it apart and using it for whatever they want.
33:05He's committing crime and attacking people's premises, so I was really, really pleased to get him caught and off the road and the opportunity to be put in front of a court and to be dealt with for those offences.
33:21It feels really good. That's why we come to work, is to try and catch these people.
33:26Coming up, a repeat offender.
33:31He's absolutely brick in it. If you look at his hands, he's so nervous.
33:35Maybe heading back to prison.
33:37We've not even got to the eight minutes yet and it's still, it's showing positive for cocaine.
33:57We're back to you, Jack.
34:00Some estimates suggest van drivers are less likely to have a clean licence compared to other motorists.
34:07I'll go the other side. I should be able to pick him off.
34:11Receive, thank you.
34:12There's a bloke who's got a revoked driving licence or a disqualified driving licence.
34:27Just pass me the reds again, please, on what vehicle I'm looking for.
34:33A little white combo van.
34:35It's just where it's hit me for, it's making me think, there's got to be around here somewhere.
34:43You do find a high portion of van drivers in vans because, A, they can be hidden a bit more because they're higher and, B, that it's their day-to-day work.
34:57They need to drive the van to earn a living.
35:01See if you can position yourself.
35:03Maybe up at them shops a bit further up.
35:05Yeah.
35:06Sometimes I think they just get a bit cocky that, oh, they're in a van, they're not going to get stopped.
35:12It's just like any person in a van going to work.
35:14So, they just carry on.
35:20Wait is on.
35:25Should have come by now, I'd have thought.
35:29Just with the information we've got this time, he's obviously a disqualified driver.
35:34He's got a number of driving convictions.
35:38And he's a little bit anti-police with his violent markers towards us.
35:42So, lack of respect for authorities.
35:44So, I'm not expecting him to do a compliant stop.
35:52There we go.
35:56Contact, contact.
36:01Vehicle's two up.
36:03We've got one vehicle for cover.
36:05Heading towards the roundabout.
36:06Stand by.
36:07So, first of first.
36:18And then left, left, left.
36:20Stand by.
36:29I'll take front end off, Jack.
36:30Nick will stop, no damage.
36:40David, someone's driving this car, mate.
36:42You've got a license.
36:44Mate, be honest with me.
36:46You've got a license?
36:47No.
36:47Good, mate.
36:48We'll take a seat in my car.
36:49Mate, I'm going to take hold of you.
36:50You're not going to cuff you out like that.
36:51We'll just go and get it sorted.
36:52Disqualified drivers continue to drive is annoying for me.
37:01My insurance goes up every year.
37:04And that's because these drivers just don't care.
37:07We suspect that you're a disqualified driver.
37:09You just confirmed.
37:10Let's do some checks, mate.
37:12Who's car is it?
37:16My brother's.
37:17Your brother's.
37:17Does he know you've got it?
37:19Yeah.
37:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:22Are you sure?
37:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:24Just check how many disqualified he's had.
37:26If it's strike three, then we'll have to take him in.
37:30So, let's have a look at your driving history, then.
37:342017.
37:36You've got 12 months disqualified.
37:38You've got four weeks imprisonment in 2020.
37:44Then you've got 2021, you've got disqualified for 12 months.
37:49Then you've got disqualified again in 2023.
37:53He's not learning this lesson.
37:54He's just continuing to offend, get another disqualification.
37:58So, end of the day, we're sick of it.
38:00Yeah, we're safe, thank you.
38:01We're going to start arresting people and they can have the day in court the next day
38:04and lose a license quicker or go to prison.
38:06He's absolutely bricking it.
38:09If you look at his hands, they are all over the place.
38:13So nervous.
38:14As a repeat offender, the banned driver may be facing another custodial sentence.
38:20You only went to court two weeks ago and now you're driving again.
38:23First of all, I didn't know what I did.
38:24And what did they give you at court, you say?
38:26A fervor disqualification and...?
38:28180 hours of community service and a fine.
38:31180 hours of community service.
38:33Yeah.
38:34You're going to end up going to prison, mate, for it.
38:35Have you drug-swiped him?
38:37I've not drug-swiped him, I've breathalyzed him.
38:39Yeah, I've got one.
38:39Do you use drugs, mate?
38:41Yeah.
38:41Right, fair enough.
38:43Lean forward for us.
38:44Stick your tongue out.
38:45Oh, lovely.
38:46Oh, sorry, mate.
38:47What drugs do you use, mate?
38:50Cocaine.
38:50When was the last time you used it?
38:51Yeah.
38:53Okay.
38:54It's obviously been hard working and doing bits.
38:57Bloody hell, do you work with this?
38:58Bit of a painter and decorator.
39:03Oh, my God.
39:05I hope he's not halfway through a job.
39:09Sorry, Mrs. Miggins.
39:12Want to get someone else to do your painting.
39:13Mate, we've not even got to the eight minutes yet and it's still showing positive for cocaine.
39:21So you're under arrest for providing a positive roadside test for saliva for cocaine, okay?
39:27So section 5A drug driving.
39:29He's got intoxicants in his body that are affecting how he's thinking, so his stopping distances aren't going to be the same.
39:36He just poses a massive risk, whether it's to other road users or people just walking down the street.
39:42I'll go back down to the police station now where he'll get processed.
39:46We'll take bloods from him, send them off for analysis and hopefully he's got a further length event.
39:52If not, it's a little bit more prison time until he'll just come out.
39:54So one for a man, I would imagine, due to his history.
39:57So, yeah, good job. Very good job.
40:07So, charge with the diswall and the...
40:10Diswalling.
40:10And bail for the drugs.
40:12Diswalling with no insurance.
40:13No insurance, yes.
40:15I think he thinks he's getting out, but...
40:17He's provided his blood sample with the nurse to get tested to see what level he's over the prescribed limit.
40:25Mate, I'm quite straight talking, OK?
40:28We've obviously discussed about, obviously, you're on, you're suspended, you're on that.
40:32You're going to be kept for the driving offences, mate.
40:34I'm not going to bullshit you because there's no point, is there?
40:36So you'll be kept for them two offences and you'll be bailed for the drug driving.
40:40So you go to court in the morning, mate.
40:41Right, OK.
40:41I'll get your decision, won't you?
40:43Where's Derby play?
40:44I play tonight, don't they?
40:47I'm sure if you ask, they'll tell you to score.
40:51Nobody wants to watch Derby anyway.
40:54Saved you some heartbreak.
40:56Sometimes you try to have a bit of banter with them, try and relax the situation, but
41:00he's not liking the Derby jokes one bit.
41:04This way, mate.
41:05So the gentleman's been remanded for court in the morning, got a offending history, which
41:10puts other road users at risk.
41:12So we kept for the morning court where a district judge will decide his punishment and see if
41:17he'll be allowed back out.
41:18Yes, please, mate.
41:19I'll get you some flip-flops if you want some.
41:21When someone's got multiple disqualifications on the driving licence, it just shows a clear
41:26disrespect to the courts.
41:28If they carry on doing it, they just deserve to go to prison.
41:30Take care, mate.
41:40There are more vans on Britain's roads than ever before.
41:44For the traffic cops, stopping criminals and offenders from using works vehicles is a continuous
41:49challenge.
41:51We all like to think that we're going out and making a difference every day.
41:55We're there to do a job.
41:56We don't make things personal.
41:57It's not personal to us.
41:58It's our job to go out there and find these people and gather the evidence and put them
42:02before the courts.
42:04And it's all in the interest of keeping our roads safe and getting criminals off the roads.
42:09It's really frustrating seeing people using the roads every day whilst they're disqualified
42:17from driving.
42:19And it is quite often that we're catching disqualified drivers again and again and again.
42:26And it's only until the courts step in and we're getting them remanded and we're getting them
42:30a custodial sentence that they'll stop.
42:33There's lots of transit vans on the road.
42:37When they go into wherever they're stealing these cables from, they're in and out so quickly.
42:43The people that are involved in these sort of crimes are career criminals.
42:47This is what they do.
42:48This is the job.
42:49They're good at it.
42:49And our job on roads policing is to disrupt that as much as possible.
42:56In this episode...
