00:00It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25You've got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the U.K.'s most dangerous roads.
00:30Oh, nobody's been killed out of this. I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast we're going?
00:35It's scary when stuff like this happens.
00:37In life-and-death situations...
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be tainted!
00:41We've got runners.
00:43Face down.
00:46Yes, yes, successful stick.
00:49Around every corner...
00:51You've got great acting, mate.
00:54There's a new challenge...
00:56...for the traffic cops.
00:58They're part of the vehicle now!
01:01I'm going home.
01:03Stop grabbing me like that!
01:06Stay there!
01:08Coming up, it's a busy bank holiday weekend.
01:11On the floor now!
01:12As officers hunt down a gang of suspected thieves.
01:15Alright, come!
01:17Police!
01:21Deal with young drivers.
01:23All it is, I had a bit of room and it stinks a bit.
01:27If you're smoking in the evening, you will still be under influence the next day.
01:31Good.
01:32Yes.
01:34And a lorry crash locks down one of the county's busiest roads.
01:37What's happened?
01:38Leaving officers searching for answers.
01:40Nothing's happened.
01:41Well, something's happened.
01:42Something's happened.
01:43Yeah, the Yankee Tango D-03.
01:45What do you know about?
01:46Just stay home.
01:47Near the M1.
01:48From an A to all units monitoring this channel, we've just had an ANPR hit for a vehicle. Stand by for details.
02:08Traffic cop John Terry is looking for a suspicious van using cloned registration plates.
02:15All mobile units, be aware.
02:18This vehicle is known for several thefts from lorries in the area on different counties as well as ourselves.
02:22It's a Sprinter, mate. Look at the images.
02:27Plain white Sprinter.
02:30Theft from heavy goods vehicles is one of the UK's fastest growing crimes, with millions of pounds of goods stolen every year.
02:39Historically, I know that these guys, they're travelling down from, you know, the Leeds side.
02:44They'll have like a spotter vehicle that will come down the motorway.
02:48And they're always looking for where the police are.
02:51They bring down a clone lorry or a clone van if they're ill-gotten games.
02:55Are we just waiting for the van? We're not going to bother with the spotter?
03:02Are we just going to have a look at the van, mate, in case it's the removal van that's the dodgy one?
03:09It should be in convoy with that car, hasn't it?
03:12Yeah, Ford Fusion. The issue it might be the spotter vehicle.
03:16It's thought the van is travelling in convoy with a spotter car, full of suspected thieves looking for targets.
03:24Yeah, this Sprinter van's a clone, guys.
03:28Should be a removal that's been displayed on a white Sprinter.
03:36Drop me in car.
03:38It's possibly what we could do in a block, couldn't we, if it stays on the motorway?
03:41With fellow traffic cop Mark White and colleagues further up the motorway, John tails the suspect van.
03:54Have you got the van in view?
03:59I have, mate, yeah.
04:00John pulls in front of the van.
04:12Right, stopped on the slip road.
04:21I go up to the lorry and the passenger door's wide open, the engine's still running.
04:26Tango's three there, I've got runners, slip road, into the woods, mate, the side of the slip road. Exit, slip.
04:35How many runners, John?
04:37Three there, I only saw one male in the cab.
04:40He's exited out of the passenger door, into the wooded area.
04:45I'm quite sure, mate, just one from what I saw in the rear view mirror.
04:49Initially wasn't going to follow me, as none.
04:51Stopped on my heart's shoulder and then decamped out the door.
04:5624, I'm on the road that runs adjacent.
05:01As Mark and colleagues search for the runner.
05:04He's gone straight down the embankment, you can see where he's treaded down the grass.
05:08John sticks with the van.
05:14Yes, yes, got an ETA for the dog?
05:15Alright, pal!
05:24It's the police!
05:27I've got a mail with me in the back of the van.
05:30Come here!
05:31You have a taser on you.
05:33Come towards me.
05:35Walk towards me.
05:36Walk towards me.
05:37Sit on your backside.
05:39Arms in front of you.
05:46OK, mate, you're under arrest this minute in time.
05:48Suspicion of theft of those items in the back of that van.
05:50Can have a local unit to me, please, I know.
05:54Vehicle's fully laden with goods in boxes.
06:01And in the back of this van, we've got CCTV cameras, electric scooters, watches, etc.
06:09While John takes stock of the goods in the van.
06:14Jim, I'm just coming up. How far have you got?
06:16Nearby, Mark and other officers are tailing the spotter car.
06:25Yeah, coming to you.
06:29I think I've got you in sight, Jim. I'm just at the roundabout now.
06:31Get on the straight, Jim. I'll try and get in front. Do you want me to take his front?
06:42Yeah. All I'll do.
06:55Take the ignition off, pal. Take the ignition off for me.
06:57Three, five. Vehicle's stopped. Five occupants. We need some other units, please, so we can get these mails searched.
07:03They've been detained.
07:05Right, at the minute, you're all under arrest. OK? Suspicion of theft from vehicle.
07:09Where are you all from?
07:13Right, thanky-dokey.
07:15OK.
07:17Don't be in arrest for the suspicion of theft from a vehicle.
07:20You've been in convoy with a van that we've just stopped. It's full of stolen gear.
07:23Listen, all we need is suspicion, OK? And at the minute, I've got suspicion that you're connected with that sprinter van that we've just stopped. It's full of stolen gear.
07:32All right.
07:34Well, you know, that's what for us to prove, isn't it?
07:37That's fine. Yeah. But you're just round here for a jolly, aren't you, this time of night?
07:41I'll wait for some more units. We'll just put a pop in, aren't you? All right.
07:44Let's give you that down first.
07:45OK, all right.
07:46Open your pockets, no sharps, Rowan.
07:50There's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no, there's no.
07:56OK, just step over here for me, pal.
08:00OK, but I'm going to search you to start with, OK.
08:04Look there, for me.
08:06You got anything on you at all you shouldn't have?
08:09Have we seen there's another boat in the boot?
08:11There's someone else in the boot?
08:12There's someone else in the boot.
08:15Right, yeah. Well, he's pretending to be asleep.
08:18There are seven men linked to the suspected stolen goods, plus the man who escaped from the clone van.
08:27Stay there!
08:29And now one of them's on the run.
08:31Mate, stay there!
08:46Stay there or you're getting gassed.
08:48Stay there, turn around!
08:50On the floor!
08:51On the floor now!
08:56Stay there.
08:57Down!
08:58On your chest!
09:00On your chest!
09:02Turn around!
09:06Yeah, I've got that runner detained.
09:10Why are you running?
09:12Yeah, mate, I've got him.
09:14I just want to go to bed, mate.
09:16That's why I went.
09:18You want her to go to bed, Stephen? Right.
09:20Right.
09:21Come on!
09:23I'll have to walk all the way round now.
09:25That wasn't worth it, were it?
09:27Back on the motorway, a dog handler arrives to help search for the runaway van driver.
09:33The dog unit's going into this wooded area for the driver of the van.
09:38That's where he's gone, mate, anyway.
09:40I've not heard nothing, to be fair, other than going there.
09:43As the dog searches...
09:45Adam's going in with the dog.
09:47Traffic cop Nick Rice is on scene with a drone.
09:50So, to your 12 o'clock now.
10:03Right in front of you.
10:05Right, stop there.
10:07Head back towards the slip road.
10:09And whatever the heat source is, it's right in front of you.
10:12I've got you, dog.
10:13It's more or less in front of you now.
10:15It's south in front of you.
10:16There, you're on it now.
10:21It's literally standing on it.
10:25Minutes later, John spots something.
10:30Stand up!
10:32What for?
10:34I'm a police officer.
10:35You're stood at the side of the motorway.
10:36Stand up!
10:38Yes, sir.
10:40Show me your hands.
10:44This one.
10:46What for?
10:47Jump over here.
10:48Jump over here.
10:49I will.
10:50Get over.
10:53I'm going to take a seat in my car.
10:56You're from Leeds, are you?
10:57Hey, you're under arrest on suspicion of theft.
10:59What?
11:01The items in the back of that van that's just left.
11:03Do you have to say anything I'm supposed to mention?
11:05Trying to court it.
11:06Do you see my evidence?
11:08With eight suspected gang members under arrest,
11:11the cloned van and the spotter car are impounded.
11:14I'm sure we've jumped out of the car and legged it.
11:28Coming up, Operation Limit.
11:31He's had a split apparently this afternoon.
11:33Oh dear.
11:34It's the first bank holiday campaign against drink and drug driving.
11:38Have you had any complaints about my car?
11:39Yeah, about your driving.
11:41I've not been driving at all.
11:42Seriously.
11:43What, as in you've not driven down here?
11:44I've not driven down here at all, mate.
11:45I'm not from around here.
11:46OK.
12:02Start the bank holiday weekend.
12:04I'm guessing there'll be quite a few people heading out for an extra day of drinking
12:09and celebrating and letting their hair down.
12:12Traffic cop Matt Cork is part of Operation Limit,
12:16a bank holiday weekend campaign against drink and drug driving.
12:21And with any luck, both people will make the adult choice of arranging transport homes.
12:28But we shall see.
12:30Weatherman says it's going to be pretty good at the end of this week into the weekend
12:33and that long weekend is going to be good.
12:35You're instantly thinking it's going to be busy.
12:38I can guarantee that on a bank holiday weekend, our drink and drug drive statistics rise.
12:45Around 10,000 people are killed or injured by drink and drug drivers every year.
12:51It causes heartbreak to families.
12:52Unfortunately, it continues to grow.
12:54It keeps us busy day in, day out.
12:59Were you involved in the RPC or have you just seen it?
13:02Yeah.
13:05Within an hour on patrol, Matt and colleagues receive a call about a car crash.
13:13And on this collision happening, two have jumped out of the car and legged it.
13:18So we're just making our way to assist with an area search
13:21and try and ascertain why they've decided to run.
13:25It's Friday night.
13:27I wouldn't be surprised if intoxicants were involved.
13:38As Matt arrives, the runaway suspects have been rounded up.
13:41Both mates in both cars driving with each other.
13:45Oh dear.
13:46The HTV apparently has popped out.
13:47I know where the red car has ruined the blue one.
13:50Right.
13:51We've got a driver of red car that we're doing at the moment.
13:53Yeah.
13:54And he is our main man for the blue car.
13:56Right, okay.
13:57He's had a split apparently this afternoon.
13:58Okay, round.
13:59Do you want to come and have a seat in my car with me, mate?
14:01Yeah.
14:02Super.
14:03Seat in there, youth.
14:04While officers check on the other suspect, Matt deals with the driver.
14:11Obviously, you've told me colleague you've had a spliff.
14:16Yeah.
14:17You smell cannabis.
14:18You've been involved in a road traffic collision.
14:19So therefore, I'm going to make a requirement of you to provide me with a sample of saliva
14:23thought analysis.
14:24All right.
14:25I have to warn you that failed to do so may render you liable to prosecution.
14:27Okay.
14:28Are you happy to give me a sample?
14:29Yeah, that's fine, mate.
14:30Excellent.
14:31When was the last time you smoked cannabis then?
14:32A couple of hours ago, mate.
14:33I'm not going to lie to you.
14:34I have one every time after I work.
14:35Right.
14:36And what do you do for work?
14:37I drive for a living.
14:38Right, okay.
14:39You realise the risks associated with that, mate?
14:41What do you mean by that?
14:42Yeah.
14:43Yeah.
14:44Yeah.
14:45Yeah.
14:46If you're smoking in the evening, you will still be under the influence the next day.
14:47Really?
14:48Yes.
14:49I thought it lasted two hours.
14:50No.
14:51That's what I thought.
14:52No.
14:53It potentially lasted days.
14:54Really?
14:55Yes.
14:56I actually didn't know that.
14:57Yeah.
14:58It lost my nerve every day, actually.
14:59Yeah.
15:00I seem to get a lot of certainly younger people that have got absolutely no idea or claim
15:15to have no idea that cannabis can be in your system for days.
15:20Yeah.
15:21Um, how long have you been driving?
15:23Me?
15:24Nearly three years, Natalie.
15:25Right, okay.
15:26Um, was this the first closing you've had?
15:28Uh, yeah.
15:29Right, right.
15:30Literally.
15:31Okay.
15:32I don't understand how somebody can be so stupid as to think, having used cannabis three
15:38hours ago, that they are now safe to drive.
15:40Um, I'm gonna wipe this swab on your tongue and both sides of your mouth, alright?
15:45Just lean forward for us, mate.
15:46Sound.
15:47In on the cheek.
15:48On the other cheek.
15:49The results of the drug swipe will take around five minutes.
15:58Who's ended up running off then?
15:59No one.
16:00They ran into the bush because the car looked like it was going on fire, to be honest with
16:08you all.
16:09Right.
16:10I'm not getting caught in that blaze.
16:11Yeah.
16:12There's no point of that.
16:13It's not a risky life or that.
16:14No, exactly.
16:15You ever been involved with police before?
16:17No.
16:18Good stuff.
16:19What sort of work do you want to get into, do you know?
16:21Driving me.
16:22Right.
16:23I'll tell you now, if you carry on smoking cannabis, you're not going to get there.
16:29You know what?
16:30I do it to help me.
16:31To be honest with you.
16:32Right.
16:33I know you, I bet you hear it every day.
16:34I bet you do.
16:35You're right, yeah.
16:36But it actually caused me down.
16:38It might feel like it at the time, but all it's doing is making your mental health worse.
16:43The impact of drug driving is massive.
16:46It can cause overconfidence.
16:48It can cause drowsiness, poor distance judgment.
16:53There's 101 different ways that it can affect your ability to drive negatively.
16:58The test shows a positive result for cannabis.
17:01Yeah.
17:02OK.
17:03So at 2240, you're under arrest on suspicion of driving that motor vehicle, whilst over the specified limits of a controlled substance, namely cannabis.
17:13OK.
17:15You should follow this gentleman.
17:16It's just a busy night tonight.
17:17Yeah.
17:18It's Friday night before a bank holiday weekend.
17:19It's Monday then.
17:20Yeah, yeah.
17:21But you're thinking folk aren't at work Monday.
17:35It means that they go extra hard Friday night thinking I've got Saturday, Sunday and Monday
17:40to recover.
17:41Yeah.
17:42Yeah.
17:43Right then.
17:44You ready?
17:45Yeah.
17:46I'm 18.
17:47A nurse takes a blood test from the driver.
17:50The sample will be sent off for forensic analysis and in the meantime, he will be bailed back
17:56to re-attend this police station in three months' time.
17:58At which point, we should have the results.
18:00Follow me.
18:01For now, the young man's free to get back on the road.
18:06Let me get your left home, mate.
18:08But a career driving trucks hangs in the balance.
18:13Why would you risk it?
18:14One, for your own health and safety.
18:17Two, for the safety of other people on the road.
18:20And three, why are you going to risk your licence?
18:22One, for your time, go to eight.
18:23Still monitoring radio.
18:24Half an hour later.
18:25Vehicle has been sighted.
18:26Throwing up Warwick Avenue.
18:27Believe to be on Burton Road heading towards Little Over.
18:28I think local units have potentially got a drink driver.
18:29The hard and fast rule is if you're driving, don't bother drinking.
18:30Simple as.
18:31Just on rồi, stick to Elf, hamsl.
18:39You've got eyes on that vehicle, I think.
18:40Standby.
18:48He's,カёт SCHALE.
18:50I see.
18:53Hello, am I talking to you for your 200 days that we've rode over the course of work?
18:59I'm salvation.
19:00Over here.
19:01So spin back round back and crash as ill kiddo and to where the roundabout is where you'd go to chain lane
19:07Vehicle stopped, stand by
19:11Hello Paul, how's it going sir?
19:13How are you?
19:14Good good, just come over to this side for us. Is it your car?
19:17Yes, my car
19:18Right, I'll tell you what, while we sort this, come and have a seat in my car mate
19:23From what I can gather, I think there's been some information received from the public that that chap's going to be drink driving in that vehicle
19:28He's come round the roundabout pretty quick. I'll be honest, I thought he was gonna go. I thought he was gonna fail to stop. However, he has pulled up
19:37How come you pulled me over, sir?
19:41How come you stopped me? Have you had any complaints about my car?
19:44Yeah, about your driving.
19:45I've not been driving at all. I've only jumped into the car.
19:49Right.
19:51What as in you've not driven down here?
19:53I've not even driven down here at all mate, I'm not from around here.
19:55Okay.
19:56Have you had a drink tonight?
19:58I've had two shots.
19:59Okay.
20:00Honestly, I've not even driven the car, about 10-15 minutes ago.
20:03I've only had like two shots earlier on in the night.
20:06Okay.
20:07Friday night.
20:08But I don't drink behind the wheel.
20:09No, good, excellent. So, because of the manner you're driving, as described to me by other officers, and I can smell intoxication out of your breath now, and obviously you've said you've had two drinks.
20:18Okay.
20:19I'm going to make a requirement, go ahead, of you to provide me with a sample of breath for analysis.
20:24I have to warn you that failed to do so, may render you liable to prosecution, alright?
20:28Chain late.
20:29I had a few shots about three hours ago after.
20:31Are you happy to give me a sample of breath?
20:33I'll give you a sample, but it's been about three hours.
20:35That's fine.
20:36All it is, I had a bit of rum, and it's a bit, you know, it stinks a bit.
20:39Yeah.
20:40So that's all it is, if you can smell it off me, whatever, whatever, but I'm not the type of guy who does anything like that behind the wheel.
20:44Okay.
20:45You'll often get those little signs, before they've even provided a sample, that they're going to be over, when they're going, oh no, I'm sure I'll be fine.
20:53We had two pints.
20:54You can smell the beer on them, you know, the way that their eyelids are sort of almost starting to droop.
20:59You know that they're going to blow over straight away.
21:01Deep breath in, see your lips, keep blowing until I tell you to stop.
21:07So, legal limit is 35.
21:10A quarter of a million breath tests are carried out every year, and young males fail the most.
21:16It was about three hours, I've only had three shots in total.
21:20All it is, I had a bit of rum, it's really, really smelly, and, you know.
21:25Okay.
21:26You've provided a sample of 61, mate, so at the minute you're under arrest and suspicion of driving that motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed limit.
21:33Local officers arrive to take the man to the police station.
21:38You know, just pop your hands in front.
21:40Excellent.
21:41This one.
21:42Excellent.
21:43Anything on you that's going to hit me?
21:44No.
21:45No super, mate.
21:46I'm going to give you a quick pat down, alright.
21:47Typical Friday night, to be honest.
21:48You know, not unlike any other Friday night, really, with people thinking they can get away with driving what's under the influence.
22:05We've been probably out of custody for about 40, 45 minutes, straight back in there for a couple more hours, I would imagine.
22:12But, yeah, it's what we're here for.
22:16Obviously, that's the second job tonight that's involved drivers being under the influence of intoxicants.
22:24Surprisingly enough, both of them need their licenses for their chosen sort of careers.
22:30The first lad being a delivery driver, with hopes of going on to be a HCV driver.
22:36A chap just now driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, and lo and behold, he's a mechanic.
22:43So, two people that you would expect, really, would know better, and would hold their licenses in higher regard than they have done.
22:53Coming up.
22:57A driver suspected of cloning cars.
23:00He may make an appearance very shortly.
23:03Puts the traffic cops on high alert.
23:05There's potential for something to crack off.
23:08And a bank holiday lorry crash closes one of Derbyshire's busiest roads.
23:13What's happened?
23:14Nothing happened.
23:15Well, something's happened.
23:16Something happened, but I can't remember.
23:36Slank colony.
23:37So, hopefully, as will be the case, it'll be nice, smooth sailing, and we'll have no dramas.
23:43But, probably one or two ways, I guess.
23:47On the outskirts of Derby, traffic cop Nick Rice is halfway through a 12-hour shift.
23:52In an ideal world, it would be that everybody behaves themselves, and nobody gets in to bother, and nobody has an accident or anything.
24:04But, we shall have to see.
24:06Let's see.
24:16No one's hidden away.
24:17What's that doing?
24:18Nick spots a suspicious parked car.
24:23Fair enough.
24:24There was somebody that I used to, still does, clone vehicles and drive around without a license or insurance or anything.
24:34And I've had numerous pursuits with him, and he's rammed me before.
24:37And, in fact, he drives Toronto, isn't there?
24:41There's a Toronto there.
24:42Let's have a look at that one.
24:44He used to hide stolen vehicles in that corner, which is why I've just been checking that one out.
24:59That's not right.
25:02That is not right.
25:03Why is there two policies on that?
25:06There's insurance.
25:07In fact, there's two vehicles for that plate.
25:10The chap, who I believe, has clothed in this vehicle.
25:13I've had pursuits with him before.
25:15Chris Ryan's had a pursuit with him before.
25:17On the pursuit with Chris Ryan, he went off-road, and he slammed through gates,
25:22and the top of the gate nearly came through Chris's windscreen, and he rammed Chris on that one as well.
25:29Footage of the pursuit shows the suspect being followed down a country lane by PC Ryan.
25:38He reverse rams him.
25:39He tried for a second time.
25:42Before crashing through a gate.
25:45Reverse ram.
25:47And then turning around and driving straight at PC Ryan.
25:52He has rammed head on.
25:55Now reversing back down the road.
26:02The man got away that night.
26:05He's now off-road again, through a field, turned his lights off.
26:08But was later tracked down through CCTV and was arrested.
26:14Nick believes he's up to his old tricks.
26:17Knowing who I think it is that's going to be driving it, I would be happy taking that off the streets and negating the risk of him driving it.
26:26Because if we get behind him, and he's in a clone vehicle, he rams police vehicles, he doesn't stop.
26:32He goes the wrong way on dual carriageways and motorways.
26:34And I wholly, like, negate that.
26:40I'm going to go and have a look at it.
26:42Nick calls for backup.
26:44I've stumbled across an Nissan X trail, which is his choice for cloning.
26:49Just pop up here, mate, just in case anything cracks off.
26:51There's no VIN number on it.
26:52Yeah, it's a clone.
26:57There's two different plates on it.
26:58Genuine, it's got roof bars across the top of it.
27:00It's a totally different plate as well.
27:01Yeah, it's a clone.
27:02Oh, let's have that away.
27:03When I saw it, I thought, hmmm, if you look at the images, the ones on the actual one, that's a clone.
27:23Okay, let's have that away.
27:26when i saw it i thought if you look at the images the ones around here have got them
27:34screws on the top right hand corner of the plates the ones down south have the screws
27:42through the middle and also that's a plain plate and that one has got writing uh underneath
27:49from previous knowledge i know that his go-to vehicle to clone vehicles plates is a nissan x
27:56trail so i'm doing a bit of investigation and digging it turns out that this one in front is
28:02confirmed to be cloned to stop anything else happening we'll uh we'll have it away
28:07and it is a common problem um around people copying other people's number plates
28:13to use them for criminality so yeah it is quite a big issue
28:16i checked because i'm not actually no it's not definitely cloned that
28:24100 the genuine car is registered 150 miles away and nick wants to get this clone recovered before
28:36the suspect turns up the guy who thinks cloned this vehicle he may make an appearance very shortly i
28:43don't know yay can we uh can we get this moving sharp as there's potential for something to crack
28:52off so we'd rather get this done and out of the way so we can uh clear the area
28:56we'll just don't know come to work for trouble but rather not have it so uh sooner we get out of here the better i guess
29:08yeah yeah yeah cool so i'm definitely happy with the result that being on the back of that truck
29:18like that is a lot better than being on the back of a truck when we've been involved in a pursuit
29:23but for the time being the roads are safe so yeah it's a good result uh getting that thing off the
29:29streets happy days
29:31from an 8 oscar tango mobile units have i got any units free please to start making the way towards
29:40the a38 yes take five 15 minutes later nick receives a call about an accident on one of the
29:48county's busiest roads the roads around derbyshire on a bank holiday you can see an increase in traffic
29:55broken down vehicles accidents happen as well and obviously if there's more traffic on the roads
29:59there's more risk of a collision occurring so we're just on the way to an hour to report of an
30:04rtc on the a38 northbound uh report that a lorry driver has had a seizure and has come off the road
30:13and gone up an embankment and hit a tree i believe any accident can be bad but when it's hgv
30:21obviously obviously the risks are higher those they're a bigger vehicle they're harder to stop
30:27uh depending on what they're carrying as well got a lot of fuel on board and if they hit something
30:32a lot smaller then i can quite easily wipe them out when we get to the scene we've got to help the
30:40people that need the help but also consider the traffic flow as well and trying to keep everybody
30:45out still moving but there also are times when if it's serious enough and we'll have to shut the
30:50whole road and that can just bring chaos to the roads but unfortunately it's a necessary evil
30:55sometimes traffic is already slowing tanker 38 soon to be state six just with a backlog of traffic
31:04i'm pulling up and i'm seeing a hgv up the embankment just leaning against a tree
31:17i think the driver's out
31:23hello driver the driver of the hgv is sat up and talking and it's a massive relief to think that
31:40there aren't any serious injuries they live to fight another day
31:44how are you yeah what's happened nothing happened well something's happened
31:49you don't know no this hgv driver doesn't appear to be showing any kind of reaction to
31:58the collision that he's had there aren't any emotions he seems quite vacant you think he had
32:06a seizure there was an eye witness and as he approached him he was violently jerking and shaking
32:11and then as he got to him he was still doing it oh okay so it wasn't a result of the van coming up
32:16the embankment or anything when he got to him he was still doing it there's a passing doctor on scene
32:20uh who is off duty and really nice of her to stop and help out when i got to him he was just staring
32:28like i mean he's not from experience and going to traffic collisions and stuff like that he doesn't
32:34appear to be somebody that has had a collision probably they're quite panicked upset shaken
32:40yeah there's none of that very a witness has seen the lorry going up the embankment
32:46and they said that they've seen him almost fitting at the wheel
32:50unfortunately i can't speak to the witness because they're no longer there and i don't know
33:09who they are and i've got no way of contacting them which is annoying in a way because i'd like
33:16to have spoken to them to find out how this has happened hey tanga 38 driver as uh as has been
33:24passed is suspected to have uh some sort of medical episode it's been seen by a member of the public
33:30apparently convulsing at the wheel before crashing he's conscious and breathing here he's out the cab he
33:35has no recollection of what's happened and to look at him you won't think that anything had happened
33:40with the eyewitness gone nick searches for other evidence it looks like he's come off right at the
33:47the apex taking out numerous trees along the way but then it looks like he's been either steered or
33:55pushed back up the embankment to the final tree that's caught him amazing i think if that tree hadn't
34:02been there he would probably have toppled over so he's a lucky boy a recovery van arrives and the
34:12clear-up operation begins i was thinking that maybe he's been using his phone or something but
34:18if you're using your phone you're going to react aren't you if you're drifting off you're going to
34:22come back he is literally so he's going to you can see a consistent yeah line up there
34:28so there's something amiss here there's no sign of any drug use there's no smell of alcohol or anything
34:35i can't smell anything but it's not always the case you can't always smell alcohol on people that
34:41have had a drink believe it or not keep going keep going keep going keep going that's it mate thank
34:48you that's it happy days nothing all right right so we're just waiting for the ambulance to arrive
34:54check you out and find out why this might have happened all right um you might need to go to
34:59hospital um so they can run some checks and stuff so obviously somebody said they've seen you
35:04having a fit do you recall that at all no you remember all of this i can't remember this but i
35:13remember road i was driving nothing happened i'm really surprised to see that what's the last thing
35:19you do remember do you remember coming under the bridges further up where the big junction is
35:24you don't remember that it's plausible that if he did have a seizure that he will have a bit of
35:29unusual at all it's like and he was quite instead of transferring examining him like his pupils up
35:35there quite constricted but he doesn't seem to be kind of twitching like they're suggesting that
35:40he's had drugs or anything no i'm not suspecting drugs no with the questions over an ambulance arrives
35:48to take the driver to hospital of course if you want to get yourself on there
35:52yeah
35:53yeah
35:55hello
35:57hello tango 38
35:58as you may be aware uh this chap is off to hospital it appears very blasé almost as if
36:06nothing's really nothing's happened it's going to be checked out of hospital and uh we'll get some
36:12results from that hopefully despite the long queues of bank holiday traffic forming
36:17nick's forced to keep the road closed we are going to have to put a closure on between uh
36:23the junctions the on and the off slip uh whilst we get recovery done
36:31gonna shut up on the slip road yeah and restrain it yeah got another truck coming back he's gonna
36:36pull him pull it back the vehicle's being strapped up to pull it out of the bushes back into the
36:42carriageway it may or may not topple over but yeah we're just looking at getting it recovered
36:50now and then getting the road cleared up and reopened there could have been utter carnage here
36:55cars plowing into the lorry if it cut back across the carriageway if it would have tipped over and then
37:01rolled back onto the carriageway there could have been any number of outcomes which could have been a lot
37:05worse than what we're actually dealing with i mean he still hit that tree yeah
37:17that's his dash cam isn't it yeah that's been moved hasn't it
37:23i've got hold of the footage and it does show the vehicle just traveling a normal route
37:29up the a38 and then all of a sudden it veers off up the embankment and just
37:37carries on there's no sign of the driver trying to correct his path or
37:43breaking or anything and it just carries on up the embankment smashing through trees
37:47and comes to rest where it comes to rest on the embankment
37:53with the lorry taken away to be repaired nick can finally reopen the road
37:58coming up you're gonna have to pop your passenger window a call for help from a trapped young
38:05driver i actually can't believe you're breaking that window forces the officers to take action
38:24two eight i'm back on local now what do you need traffic cop matt cork is near the end of derbyshire's
38:34bank holiday weekend drink and drug driving campaign vehicle as decided yeah just confirm vehicle
38:42red for me please
38:46three five states matt and colleagues attend a report of a stranded driver
38:55one of the car's tires is down to the rim and the doors are locked the driver claims that the keys have
39:01dropped out of the ignition and he can't find them all right i'm just going to grab my gloves
39:05and pop the passenger window from coming
39:13what i want you to do because i'm going to have to pop your passenger window okay
39:17well you can't reach your keys can you yeah so we haven't we haven't got another option we've tried
39:22that so cover your eyes now and then put your head as close to this window and i'm going to break the
39:27other window your safest place is if you cover your eyes with your hands so that no glass spills out
39:32into the car i i actually can't believe if you're breaking that window the safest place for me is
39:40he's here looking at me you find it's not going to shatter it's going to break so just look at me
39:45just look at me and cover your eyes that's it there you go
39:48you're not going to get slammed on the floor as long as you follow instructions which you have done
40:04so thank goodness you have just trying to make this as safe as possible you are no i'm not you're coming
40:12this way mate no you're joking no no you need to come out pal so we don't want to take you out
40:19through the window yourself it's easy if you come out isn't it stick your hands on there for balance
40:24so that that area's clean okay right and i'm just going to put hands on to help you so you don't fall
40:30feather all right there we go i'm not resisting no no no no i'm going to put a pair of these on there
40:36yeah that's fine this one there you go this can't put them too tight though anything on your
40:46floor you shouldn't have fella three past eleven you're going to be arrested on that fishing and
40:50driving while being unfit great than you go and have a seat in my seat where are your keys are the
40:54under your seat the yeah right side super i have a seat in there man done the bag leaving in there
41:02i'm going to move it i'm happy enough with that right it's all right i'm just going to roll that
41:07chair forward matt suspects the young man is over the limit i'm going to keep holding the device take
41:13a deep breath in so let's keep going until i tell you to stop keep going keep going keep going keep going
41:19excellent yeah just put on the log i've managed to retrieve the keys for this car
41:30legal limits 35 uh you have failed you've provided a sample of 87 okay so you're further under arrest
41:40on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle was over the prescribed limit of alcohol same caution and necessity
41:47applies all right nearly three times over the limit the young man is taken into custody and his car is
41:53recovered drink and drug driving at the moment it's a massive massive issue and i can't understand for
42:00the life of me why these people choose to take that decision and get behind the wheel we are dealing with
42:05drinking drug drivers every single shift perhaps two or three incidents in a 12-hour period we are dealing
42:12with them day in and day out and the issue doesn't seem to be going away across this bank holiday
42:20weekend the police in derbyshire dealt with hundreds of reports of drink and drug driving two tons of metal
42:28with a drink driver behind the wheel of it it's a recipe for disaster unfortunately families around the
42:34country every day experience the pain and the anguish of incidents involving drink drivers
42:43in this episode on the floor now the eight suspects linked to the stolen goods in the lorry
42:50all right pal it's the police have all been released on bail whilst the investigation continues
42:56the trainee truck driver who crashed into a friend and tested positive for cannabis at the roadside
43:10remains under investigation whilst the police await the results of his blood test
43:17if it's proved he was over the limit he faces a minimum one year driving ban
43:21all it is i had a bit of room and it's a bit you know it stinks a bit the young mechanic who admitted
43:28smelling of rum failed to appear in court for drink driving and was later re-arrested i've had two
43:34shots okay honestly i've not even jumped the car he was banned from driving for 12 months and received a 120
43:41pound fine i definitely cloned that 100 percent the cloned car was recovered but with no proof linking the
43:49suspect to the car no further action was taken remember all of this i can't remember this but i
43:58remember wrong i was driving nothing happened i'm really surprised to see that the lorry driver who
44:04crashed on the a38 was released from hospital later that day he appears very blase almost as if nothing's
44:10happened no action was taken against him but a few weeks later the man was disqualified from the roads
44:17in connection with a separate incident of drink driving
44:22and the young man found locked inside his car i'm not resisting was disqualified from driving
44:29for 20 months and given a 300 pound fine
