00:04When Allie and I first started doing this radio show together, you guys were opening up or playing the opening stage of Live 105 San Francisco.
00:12Now here we are, K-Rock LA.
00:15Somehow we're still working on the radio.
00:17You guys are continuing to explode, not only as a band, but as family men now.
00:22So it's an honor to be able to spend some time with our friends in 21 Pilots.

00:3121 Pilots has been a friend of K-Rock for a long time.

01:10You guys have been doing a lot of, obviously, big stadiums.
01:14I mean, big, big, big venues for a while now.
01:17Does the preparation process change at all going back to kind of a smaller venue?
01:20Does the performance change?
01:22I mean, it has to, right?
01:24Yeah, definitely.
01:25There's a few logistic things that change.
01:28But at the same time, I think that when Josh and I first started, we thought that what's the secret sauce that allows you to play these giant shows in these huge arenas?
01:39And I think if there's anything that we've learned, it's that there's no secret to it.
01:43You play your show.
01:45And so as much as, yeah, we're changing up a few things to fit the venue a little better, it's pretty incredible.
01:52I think the more impressive thing is just how well our show can fit.
01:55It can scale down to that size because that's kind of really, it's really where we cut our teeth.
02:00And we love playing venues like that.
02:02So we're pumped.
02:03It's funny how we look at it like a small show because there's 1,500 people.
02:06But when you guys started, you were playing in that gymnasium for four people.
02:09So really, this is still a pretty massive show compared to where it all began for 21 Pilots.
02:14Yeah.
02:15I mean, there was a venue in our hometown of Columbus that was kind of the, you know, the Shangri-La.
02:21You know, it's like if you could play there, then you've made it.
02:23And it was about 1,500 people.
02:24So, you know, it'll bring us back to where that was our main goal was, is there any way
02:29we can possibly fill, you know, 1,000 plus people into a venue?
02:33And so, you know, it's cool 15 years later actually being able to do it.
02:38So it's going to be exciting.
02:40Well, anytime we give away tickets to a show, whether it's big or small, when it's being
02:44played by you guys, everybody is ravenous for these tickets.
02:46I was just curious because the surprise that we hear from people and the shock and the screams
02:51when they win is not something that can be replicated.
02:54Have you ever won anything?

02:57I never, you know, I don't think, I think that I just, in my mind, I never called in because
03:01I was just like, there's no way that that's a possibility.
03:05Now being on the other side and seeing that other people can win, I probably should have
03:09called in when I was younger.
03:11Like, you really blew the opportunity.
03:14Yeah, I did.
03:15I didn't want to get that back.
03:17But because of my, I think my feeling of never, probably never being able to win something,
03:25if I did, I'd probably have the same reaction as a lot of the people that you hear.
03:29I think everyone feels like a caller number eight, if you know what I mean?
03:32Like, they're like, I'm probably the one that's going to usher the next person in.
03:36Yeah.
03:36But no, someone's got to make it happen.
03:39I have no tattoos, but if I ever get one, I'll say caller 19.
03:42I feel like I'm always just that one away from the big prize, but that will all change
03:46and we will pack the place.
03:47All K-Rock listeners for 21 Pilots, of course, many people have tickets already to see you
03:51October 25th and 26th at the BMO Stadium shows.
03:55And what I love so much, and I know you're used to people kissing your ass and saying how
03:58great you are and how good your songs are.
03:59But what I love above all of that is that it feels like you guys have made an effort
04:03from the beginning to constantly rethink the way that fans experience your music.
04:07You've done it by doing the big and small shows.
04:09You did the small, then the medium, then the large venue shows.
04:12You always, it feels like you think about ways to rethink the concert-going experience.
04:18And I have been a big fan of bands starting with the encore, calling it the before core.
04:23They do it before, and then they do it again at the end.
04:26Because if it's a great song, everyone's going to want it twice anyway.
04:29That way, the people that have got to get home early to have young kids, you can relate
04:32with some of that.
04:33They can still catch the good stuff.
04:35What do you think of the before core?
04:36Do you want to be the first band to launch the before core?
04:38I think maybe we open with Heathens.
04:41We close the first set with Heathens.
04:43We'll open up the encore with Heathens, and maybe we'll let them drive their way home to
04:48Heathens as well.

05:43then you can unload all of the crap that's been piling up in your garage on them.

05:52kids?

05:59We actually been, we text about, he's got some questions about like baby monitors and

06:04I feel like I could like run a seminar on the best baby monitors, whether or not you want
06:08it, you know, connected to Wi-Fi or just a module that works through IR.
06:13And like, I mean, there's just a, you learn so much and Josh knows that I like to, you
06:19know, pass down the wisdom.
06:21So I'm sure that we have a lot more conversations to have when it comes to things we've learned.

07:03You know, I mean, I think, yeah, we, we, we kind of have to be strategic about like when
07:09to have kids in this kind of like career.
07:12So it's, it is kind of like, all right, when do we, when do we have time?
07:16Tyler and both have like asked our manager, like when, when are we having a kid?
07:20Like when can I do this?

07:22When am I allowed to have a kid?
07:23And so we had that conversation and, you know, figured out the best kind of window of time.

07:38So yeah, there will, there, I think it'll be a, during a little window of time where

07:47My first kid, she was born February of 2020.
07:50So we were forced to lock down and just stay home because of COVID.
07:55So I kind of, I lucked out and had a, had a good amount of time to, you know, make that
07:59first connection.
08:00Um, so I think, yeah, we'll, we'll take some time off to make sure that Josh gets that as
08:05well.
08:05Um, we're chatting with, uh, 21 pilots right now, uh, breach, of course, the album city
08:09walls, the new single, uh, that we're all enjoying.
08:11And, uh, was there any sort of a, I've heard you guys say before that breach in many ways
08:18was kind of like the conclusion of the story.
08:21What, what exactly do you mean?
08:23Because your previous album was going to be the conclusion of the story.
08:26And then breach became, I guess, a more fitting one, uh, for people that are freaking
08:30out now.
08:30Does that mean a new story begins or are you guys, uh, saying, well, that's going to be
08:34the end of it for us.
08:34We're going to part ways now and go live the dad life.
08:37Yeah.
08:37I think maybe we're just going to get fat and, you know, get into real estate.
08:42Oh, that sounds so nice.

08:45It's an exciting story.

08:48That's the, that's been the dream since we were like, it's really, this whole thing is
08:52just to springboard us off into our real passion.

09:04Can't quite answer it, um, fully, but you know, it is exciting to think that there's
09:10going to be kind of a new chapter in our creative, uh, journey of being able to create without
09:15not that it was like being constricted or confined, um, by the story, but there was a sense
09:20of like, here are the rules.
09:23Um, and so in a sense, whatever's next is going to have less rules to it.
09:27So we'll see what that turns out to be.
09:29Um, and yeah, you're not going to stop us from writing songs.
09:33We love it.
09:35You've got a few days off now, which is, I feel like rare for you guys.
09:38Is there anything like, what's a typical day off for you guys or what are you, something
09:42that you have to do, uh, besides being forced to talk to us?
09:47Well, we, uh, we will have a couple of days off.
09:49We're playing a show in a couple hours.
09:51Um, a day off though.
09:55I don't know.
09:55It depends.
09:56Some days I'm, some days I'm like, I want to go do everything in this city.
09:59And some days I'm like, I don't want to leave the room.
10:02Let's be very clear here.
10:03Our days off are very different currently because I'm traveling with my family.
10:09I have three kids.
10:10That's true.
10:10I'm wiping buttholes all day on my days off.
10:15That's what I'm doing.

10:16Josh is going, he's jogging, he's getting some ramen or whatever he's going to do.
10:22And I'm over here being like, are you sure you don't have to poop?
10:26This is, no, that's true.
10:27This is kind of like my farewell tour to like doing whatever I want on a day off.
10:34And so I am kind of like not taking, trying to not to take it for granted.
10:39Uh, you know, my wife and I were like on a walk the other day.
10:42We're like, this is the last time we'll be in this city without a kid.
10:45So, you know, you know, yeah, we're, we're, it's, I don't know.
10:48Yeah.
10:49Just exploring, having fun.
10:51Um, and yeah.
10:53And then, and then a kid will come and ruin everything.
10:56Do you like or hate all of the advice people give you?
10:59Because that's the one annoying thing about joining the parent group is that everyone
11:02thinks because they had a kid before you, they're some sort of an expert when a lot
11:05of them are not.
11:06So there's a lot of advice that goes your way and they'll say things like, oh, the days
11:09are long, but the years are short or, uh, whatever you're, you know, enjoy being sticky.
11:14Uh, is it, uh, what, what is the worst bit of advice you believe you've received so far?
11:19Well, I, yeah, I, I appreciate all of it.
11:21Cause I'll just take, you know, everyone's, like you said, everyone's journeys their own and
11:26everyone's journey is different and, um, I'll take it all and kind of like assume the
11:32worst, expect the worst.
11:34And hopefully, uh, I'm in for somewhat of a pleasant surprise.
11:39Um, but, but you know, yeah, I'll take everything sort of grain of salt.
11:44And, um, cause you see some people who are on one side and they're like, it's the best
11:47thing that's ever happened.
11:48And they like, never, never will say a negative thing about it, but you could tell they're,
11:51they're miserable.
11:52And then the other side, it's like, this is the, your life will change for the worst
11:57forever.
11:58And, um, you know, I think it's probably somewhere in the middle, but I don't know.
12:03I'm looking forward to, I think it'll be, what's more fun, making a baby or making an
12:06album?
