00:00happens exactly 30 minutes to go martin right here we go we talked about the daytona 500 400 miles
00:07to get into position 100 miles to party on and try and win the race we've spent 23 and a half
00:13hours jockeying for position and now we have a 30 minute sprint to the finish whatever else
00:20happens and weather may play a part the field is so jumbled up it's going to take us at least a
00:27lap to figure out who is where safety cars are off track is wet dry and soaking in different parts
00:34this holiday i'm glad i'm sitting in the drive watching because i don't like the look of this
00:39what iota as a driver no this is really difficult and like i said earlier it's easier to have all
00:45wet or all drive but the mixture is just a disaster it's greasy it's tricky you're having this gamble
00:51with tires like we've seen but i think the wet was a smart decision there's a half an hour left
00:55binning the car into the wall is not how you finish well at le mans and especially in a prototype car
01:01it's a really big risk to be on slicks in proper wet conditions i mean you've already seen the number
01:06seven car have an accident definitely down to the wet weather on slick tires yeah and you can still
01:10look out the wet patches liz they're going to stay there under the trees aren't they oh yeah you can
01:14look those out even if it's a dry line absolutely it's not damp it's wet so the problem is if you're
01:19behind one other car it's not where the dry bits have got some wet in it's where there's any grip
01:25in the really wet stuff because if you're following anyone you can't even see the side of the road
01:30never mind the corner and can you imagine that on slick tires you're trying to overtake someone in
01:34the spray we've just seen you couldn't even see anything the headlights break in the wrong place
01:39and you're off the circuit and that's your le mans over a half an hour from the end
01:42i agree with the decision for wet personally here are our battles prototype one tom christensen leads
01:48from sebastian buemi ollie jarvis audi toyota audi done it again lmp2 bertram baguette despite spinning
01:56off is leading his class ahead of teammate olivier pla and john morgan john martin no change there
02:02jan martin was still fourth the change came in the gte pro class richard leeds and patrie pilay
02:07one two for porsche stefan mucca in third place for aston martin having just come out of the pits
02:12again and in the pro in the am class john carl verney still leads for porsche ahead of renzo
02:20casey marco chochi and pat long ferrari fried porsche no change in positions there but the gaps
02:26between them again we're going to need another lap to find out now in bright sunshine around this part of
02:31the circuit going through porsche curbs and everything to play for
02:35mcnici looking at his watch then uh obviously not going to do the final session although he has
02:46got his overalls on uh there's no point is there unless they've got to have a splash and dash but
02:51has that been negated by the safety car if he's expecting to go on the podium he's not going to do
02:55it in jeans and a jumper is he well no no i mean they must obviously be hopeful to be on the podium
03:00i would have thought they would leave tom in though
03:02thank you answer the question for us so initially heading for his third win
03:09tom christensen for his ninth audi confirming they still believe more rain is on the way so
03:16the sticking back onto wet of the aston martin may well be the thing that gets them to the end
03:23and the skies are again dark in english out of our window yeah black clouds and and the wind is still
03:29very very strong out on pit lane and i think that's why we've had such immensely changeable
03:34weather this afternoon is that the wind is just blowing in storms much quicker than any of the
03:39weather forecasts could have predicted ollie gavin carving his way through back markers the car he will
03:45have ahead of him uh will be tony villander that's the next one the ferrari which is running currently
03:50fifth in the pro class and then it'll be his teammate jordan taylor ahead of him so uh ollie
03:57really really pushing now he's enjoying this isn't he loves these conditions he does well some of them
04:02i bet he loves these conditions mind you these are worse because you know wet weather tire as soon as
04:06he hits the brakes it's going to feel like he's hit slime and the tire will be squirming all over the
04:11road actually for the tire better in the wet for the driver better visibility in the dry you know
04:16but damned if you do damned if you don't liz oh no these are like i've said many times these are
04:21the worst conditions because what can you do you're either going to be great on the dry and sliding
04:26around like crazy in the wet or you're going to risk degrading the tire on the dry but be safer in
04:31the wet and clearly that's a wet track i mean look at that you don't want to be on anything but wets in
04:36there first and second running together they're a lap apart but uh sebastian boyam is just going to enjoy
04:41this final half hour he's right on this the coattails of tom christensen well we heard who
04:46do shanak saying a silver medal will be a great result for us we wanted the target was to get
04:52both cars to finish
04:53because of course liz you won't necessarily know will you who's who is driving the car ahead of you
05:04absolutely yeah that makes sense yeah now listen this here's a question for you
05:07play devil's advocate 15 minutes from the end we're expecting another downpour what is the
05:14mileage of being stuck behind the audi then you've got to get in front of him now and hope to take
05:19some advantage you if you're boemi in second you have got to try and pass him now before it goes to
05:25hell in the handcart for the 477th time in this race yeah no i agree i think he's gonna have to and
05:31also i think they've told them to say feel free to give him a bit of hassle because he's currently
05:35leading the race and if something went a bit wrong guess who would win it would be toyota so i think
05:40that was that was part of the tactical plan of saying it is the leader you're following and um
05:44please drive really hard and ride up his backside because you never know yeah tom christensen the
05:50great tom christensen can make mistakes very rare as it happens it could well that's what toyota's
05:55hoping anyway feel free to push as hard as you can yeah well they're pretty secure on wets aren't
06:00they at the moment it's uh unless you get absolute monsoon conditions both these guys plenty of grip
06:06at the moment ollie jarvis in third place he is two minutes past well done good move
06:11but uh look at this beautiful sunshine now it's a perfect june summer's day here but not on the
06:30other side of the circuit no no it's crazy and it is cold today it really is cold it might look warm
06:36and lovely here in lamar but it is very cold day for for this time of year listen that battle we saw
06:41with ollie gavin is the fourth place jordan taylor his teammate is fourth tony wielander fifth ollie gavin
06:47six they're covered by eight seconds and the battle for the lead another twist how many more as the
06:53toyota does unlap itself the alley lets him go because he's still a lap in front and if there's a deluge in
07:00a safety car it's unlikely they'll get a lap as a very nervous looking there's a move completed yeah
07:07quite a long time alongside wasn't he and that's what davis had his head in his hands for yep and
07:14rain still forecast for the final 15 minutes please don't drag this out much more and we've got a mega
07:20black cloud right in front of our studio here it's coming coming towards us that's a really evil
07:25looking one too isn't it mark this is one of the remaining dry parts of the circuit yeah for long
07:30though i wouldn't want to be on that ferris wheel right now either it's coming straight for that
07:34especially if there's lightning lightning in there oh dear and of course what comes to us will sweep
07:38right across and vanish out the far side of the track which is where the cars are now which is
07:43starting to dry up a little but we'll get wetter again if that rain does eventually i mean look at it
07:50you know in 10 minutes it's got bone dry here but again like we saw in practice and early in the race
07:55white lines outside the racing line areas they're going to be absolutely lethal well i think a lot
08:01of the teams have had to go with what their direct competitor is going to be on because either way
08:06they're going to be probably at a disadvantage one way or the other whereas if you're both on the same
08:11tire then there's some equal racing and i think that's what everybody's ultimately decided to do yeah
08:16and certainly i think if i think slicks would be the slowest well i know it would be the slowest option
08:21right now and it's risky so it would be crazy despite the dry bits the fastest parts of the
08:26entire circuit are currently wet so it would be crazy and mark we touched upon why it would be
08:32suicide because you have to finish the final lap inside six minutes and you must take the check in
08:38fact you'd be 20 laps ahead now if you crash you don't count this is quite different to american racing
08:44of course where it's just counted back we were just watching bertram baguette just before this shot
08:50you'll notice that they are leading in p2 still in the morgan nissan the oak racing car and bertrand
08:56together with ricardo gonzalez and britain's martin plowman looking for it this is what we're seeing from
09:01and that cloud looks very grim and ominous i have to say i'll tell you what when that hits the circuit
09:15it's going to be torrential okay your face is okay there might be another shower at an arch in five
09:21minutes in five minutes a shower at an arch take care there you go
09:26and look car's still sliding around liz and going off track as well it's not you
09:34you could be taken out by somebody else's accident exactly and i think these guys have all just got
09:39to be on the lookout and ultra careful the last thing you ever want to do is bin it on the last
09:45half an hour of the race and then it's saying that shower is coming through our nudge corner well
09:50our nudge in the dry is notoriously the most slippery surface corner on the hull circuit
09:55so isn't that going to be lovely it's just asking for someone to lock up and slide off the end and if
10:00it's going to get wet at our nudge 200 meters back up the road is the braking zone for indianapolis or
10:06500 meters yeah it's going to get wet there too lovely slowest and fastest parts of the corner
10:12we've got a sign of debris on track i wonder if somebody has hit something or someone at the top
10:18of the hill so coming up to what might be a yellow flag zone look at the water the bright sun and then
10:23the shadows scudding overhead stunning views of le mans in bright sunshine and still nobody daring
10:31to breathe and with 20 minutes to go and certainly another roll of the dice perhaps just to say thank
10:37you to all the marshals all the workers all the security staff the people on the campsites and
10:42everybody who make this such an enormous event run smoothly because they've been out in all of this
10:47for a week
10:48protect your tires protect your tires the rain might be coming again rain might be coming again
10:55how's he going to check his tires no no he said protect your tires which means that he's going to
11:00be looking for wet now if everyone watches the onboard you'll see he will start searching for the wet
11:05portions of the circuit to protect and keep those wet tires cool so that he doesn't degrade them
11:10because if we get the big shower again and he's scrubbed the tires too much he'll have no traction
11:15at all it's basically like being on a flat spotted slick essentially the same well not with the
11:20vibration but it'd be the same feeling and he'd have no grip at all and then that's their chances done
11:25so he's going to be moving around the circuit looking for the wet line now and and try not to
11:29muller them too much under braking under acceleration as well because that'll just rip the tread blocks off
11:34i tell you what i guarantee if you put a camera on the audi garage now volkang ulrich is pacing up as
11:39many kilometers as these guys are racing up it will be going backwards and forwards like a duck in a
11:45shooting gallery although i can say when i was speaking to brad keller oh i don't think i've ever
11:49seen brad look so nervous he's just practically shaking he's so nervous so i think it's uh it's tense
11:56for everyone and look at anthony davidson there he's looks like he's praying to anyone that's listening
12:00really yeah the other looking just further down pro-am we haven't really mentioned much in the
12:04last half hour but the 76 car that's the uh intermatmo team with jean-carl vernet on board
12:10at the moment has a one lap lead still in that class and they've had that really i think probably
12:15since the middle of the night haven't they certainly when we came in just uh just before dawn
12:19they were leading sterling effort from the from them and porsche really has turned out to be almost
12:25dominating the gt classes and i really wouldn't have called that with so many aston martin entries
12:32they were so strong and a part of me really wanted aston to win after the the tragedy and
12:37the hardship we've had today i did i mean i'm very happy for the porsches to be going so well
12:41but part of me wanted that to happen and we i'm with ferrari's history here we are 18 minutes from
12:49the end of the race we don't take any risk but we want it we want it don't worry they are getting
12:57really really wound up aren't they toyota they've got a second place secure rain yeah he's coming
13:03into it already deep grooved wet weather tires going on to the srt presumably because the previous
13:10ones were starting to feel a bit worn out yes or he's not going on to a slick he is not going he is
13:18going on to a slick this holiday are you sure it's not an inter i don't care it's not enough
13:24cruise for what's coming yeah well i'm sure it i would have thought it would be an intermediate
13:29tire probably but i could be wrong yeah it could be a bit of a modesty panel being spat up in the
13:36air there out goes the srt into this all right it is a slightly tinted windscreen but hello it's pitch
13:45black this is your race leader this is what he's seeing rain clearly coming down from the crowds in
13:56front if that's more than 15 minutes away we will have dodged a bullet and we're going to get soaked
14:01at the podium instead no too late it's already pouring here this is the run from mulsanne down to
14:07indianapolis well it's already wetter than it was a lap ago and it's starting to rain there yeah i
14:21personally would want to be on wet tires right now i don't know about these other drivers but
14:24i'd be feeling pretty happy that that was the decision the team had made at this point
14:29damien faulkner tells us it's raining heavily at the station in the centre of le mans it will be
14:33coming this way
14:34i didn't even get to say goodbye he's gone already he has gone speedy
14:40yeah didn't notice
14:42he's got train to make rain on track corners 76 which is mulsanne corner to 96 which is indianapolis
14:52and there's our lmp am leader sorry gte am leader there it is the 76 car that john carvenet on board
15:01at the moment a le mans rookie unlike his team owner raymond narak who has won this gt this race in gt2
15:09before that was back in 96 spits and spots on our commentary box window at the ford chicane
15:14not heavy but spotting with rain and vernee's got a good lead i mean they are
15:19getting on for a lap in front of renzo casa and marco chochi and the two ferraris and
15:25those guys are two minutes apart so of all the classes actually vernee is the only one that's
15:32sort of feeling a little comfortable but look at the wind blowing up the mulsanne
15:36goodness if rain doesn't follow that within the next couple of minutes then
15:41my name's heng fan hemring the dutchman hey
15:46it's an old gag i think we're better change this to the mistral not the mulsanne yes yeah really
15:50really that's just this great blast of wind before the storm isn't it liz it's uh you feel it coming
15:56pat dempsey look just so glad i think he's not having to sit in the car i was just thinking about
16:00i think he's thinking to himself gee i'm glad i'm not in there yeah i don't blame him
16:05pulled the play fake and handed it over to pat long to take on the whole offense
16:20our gte am class leader jonkel vernee and a very pensive audi garage the number one audi
16:28currently lies in fifth place will develop around most of the circuit and will be there until the
16:35end of the race it will be there until the end of the race oh nice for the podium ceremony yeah and
16:42i'm thinking perhaps that viper team right now is wishing they hadn't gone away from the wet tire
16:48unless they had a problem with the tire it's possible i don't know but i don't know if i'd want to be on
16:53intermediate so there's going to be rain across the whole circuit why is corvette coming in i know
16:57ollie gavs 74 car what roll of the dice is this what more perverse twists and turns can there be
17:0412 minutes 57 to go yeah i think you're probably right no tires out there yeah
17:12just as we go to a final pit stop we look at close-ups of heads final 13 minutes of the 2013
17:20le mans race are already underway and we believe the weather may have more to play i think everybody
17:26will be ultra cautious starting to look now as though the frantic last hour that was lining up for
17:33us may turn out to be a little less frantic than we had hoped for
17:40yeah i think the director is thinking here's one we made earlier i better show it for the end of the
17:44the race yeah frantically throw it in there otherwise the evs guys can get really ticked and won't give
17:50you a play out at the end so tom christensen leads from sebastian bwemi there on the same lap but bwemi the
17:57better part of a lap behind here is your gte pro class leader and again courtesy of pit stops and
18:04strategy he is in front of his teammate patrick pilay in the 91 at mante racing porsche and stefan
18:11mucca's aston martin in the third position in the class ahead of uh the two corvettes with tony
18:19vlanders ferrari in between them best place ferrari is fifth rain here yes looks like it
18:27in the gtm class john carverney comfortable ahead of ronzo kaze marco chochi pat long julian canal and
18:33jamie campbell walter what's looking interesting to me is that although we've had a lot of accidents
18:41a huge number of safety cars really variable weather probably some of the least amount of
18:47retirements that i can ever remember at le mans isn't that interesting and with all the insanity
18:52yeah all the insanity we've been subjected to you're right gavin's car still in the pit lane what's the
18:58problem you remember about five years ago corvette did a park and wash and then decide to go out later
19:02after they cleaned the cars because they were so far ahead of everything everyone booed them for that
19:07although they did win but why is this one parked up now he's obviously got a problem that he thinks
19:12he won't get to the end so save it for the last last thing you know what it is his problem
19:16the pace off a little bit we can do it in three laps
19:25well gav's gav's problem can't be tires because they could have fixed that
19:30it can't be fuel because they can fix that they can top him up instead of park him so it must be
19:36something that's not fixable but limp roundable on the final lappable so that sounds like transmission
19:42or engine fairly major malady now we're going to hear now from uh aston martin racing boss dave
19:48richards really it's been a terrible weekend for us all you know it started off with a bad accident and
19:53we all know the situation there and of course you know the whole team pushed then because they wanted
19:58to get the win for alan to as a tribute to him but um series of small incidents like in motor racing
20:06small accidents small mistakes and uh we don't quite achieve it this weekend not our best weekend i'm
20:12afraid thank you very much david very little i'm afraid that anyone can say really about the tragedy
20:22that befell us in the first few minutes of this race a very sad loss of alan simonson when his uh aston
20:31martin got away from him crashed at high speed at tetra rouge and it's really cast a pall over the
20:36whole race and there'll be very little jubilation i think at the end of what has been one of the
20:42craziest races of any type i can remember mark cole inside the final 10 minutes and still nobody can
20:50afford to even think of relaxing yeah and final 10 minutes and we still don't know for sure who's going
20:55to win each class we know that the lead out is pretty safe now he even if he gets a puncher he's
21:01probably going to go get cool around in the last 10 minutes but p2 is still up open and so is gt pro
21:08the only man who looks really safe is uh the raymond nurac jean carven a crystal christophe bourret car
21:15that's the imsa matmut porsche leading lm gtm well really i don't think anybody's technically safe
21:23because as you've said before mark that at le mans you must cross the checkered flag
21:28within a certain set amount of time of the overall winner finishing it is not the winner in your class
21:33it is the time is based on the overall winner and so really that means nobody's safe because if
21:38somebody blows an engine on the last lap that's it game over so the rain's not quite as heavy as we
21:44thought it was going to be we thought we're going to be in for another deluge like the one we had about
21:48an hour ago but it's just not happening at the moment no it isn't which is surprising and probably
21:52comes down to the heavy wind that we've had it's maybe just pushed the storm through quicker than
21:57anybody thought however i think there's enough water on the circuit just to keep the wet tires
22:02under control as long as everybody's a little bit careful i think we're going to have an onboard
22:08radio here i know that's not happened in the end
22:10just can see the wet here on the circuit again really mixed throughout the track
22:32well with an hour to go we were shaping up some absolutely titanic battles in
22:36almost every class only the gtm class really looked as though it might end up being settled
22:43but weather and safety cars have conspired against us yet again and have taken the sting out
22:49the number two audi driven by tom christensen in these final laps and with his teammates
22:56alan mcnish and loik duval looking now set fair to take victory for audi and in some way although
23:06maybe aston martin are not going to get the victory that they wanted for alan simonson
23:11there'll be an awful lot of people who will be very very emotional to see a danish driver the
23:17danish sports car driver if he makes it onto the top step of the podium
23:21and i think that uh we're very confident here and in the audi camp that tom christensen will be
23:34trying very hard to win this race for his friend alan simonson they were very close friends i'm sure
23:39this has been a very difficult race for him as it has been for every driver that's here and really for all
23:45of us here it's uh not not a race we all remember fondly i'm afraid no it's uh it will set all sorts
23:53of records longest period ever under safety car conditions most number of safety cars in a race
24:00and actually fewest retirements i think so far as well unless anything dramatic changes in the last few
24:07minutes so bizarre you know with the bizarre weather and twists and turns and all the accidents still
24:13these cars now have such an astonishing standard and quality they keep coming back for more final
24:20moments for bertrand baguette oh and it takes a splash of fuel yes isn't that wonderful what a feeling
24:25that must be oh gosh that is the worst feeling especially because in in some race championships
24:30you are allowed to bump start the cars at le mans you must must must start on your own accord as the
24:36driver the team cannot help you so a failed starter motor right now martin what have you seen rain on our
24:41window again this is damon's rain from the station it is raining in the pits area it is raining again
24:48it looks even wetter now again and again ukdushonak desperately hoping for this two four finish for
24:54toyota to get both cars to the finish still can't breathe five minutes to go martin he's desperately
25:01hoping the audi doesn't finish he's desperately hoping his two cars you know and liz this is the lottery
25:07with rain there's no guarantees none at all if you're on your own on the track then it's in your
25:12own hands when you're on the track with 40 other people it's not yeah anything can happen despite
25:17being on wet tires it's still wet it's still tricky it's different conditions the circuit is really really
25:24greasy now it's full of debris it's a difficult time to be on the track at le mans anyway even in the dry
25:31so i think everybody's going to be reining it in a little bit and just looking after the cars
25:37so the number two car christensen just ahead of the number one car of trellier the difference is
25:43one is first place the others in fifth place and now toyota's joined in the back little group and we're
25:48now getting to the stage martin when nobody wants to do another lap do they then they have to yeah
25:53because it it may be the wet lap that puts you in the barriers and out of the race and to come 24
26:01hours and and possibly actually over the 24-hour limit if you cross the line before the leader gets
26:07there after three o'clock you'll have to continue around another eight miles and if you run into
26:13standing water and clatter into the barriers you might do the entire 24 hours and still not finish and
26:20how tough would that be yeah the only thing broimi can do now he's in the third car on this group of
26:26prototypes if he can unlap himself at least he would finish on the lead lap which there is some honor in
26:31that liz yeah no there definitely is i'm not sure if that's going to be their their goal at the moment i
26:36think based on what happened to the number seven car and the current conditions they're just going to be
26:40looking after the car this is the final lap we're on and this is such as oh it's such an awful feeling
26:47being there you're just gripping the steering wheel praying for the checkered flag to come
26:51keeping the cars in one piece oh a little bit of a hairy pass there did we not see boemi go by
26:59i believe he's following these two outies yeah but we saw him go by the leader and unlap himself how
27:04has he dropped back off the lead lap all the way back up for some reason he uh no for some reason it
27:10didn't didn't register so maybe it's two laps behind and the monitors weren't showing really but uh
27:15ollie gav leaves the pit lane in the 74 corvette out of the podium position both corvettes unfortunately
27:22yeah i think very i think you were right on that martin i think there was a problem where they
27:26thought let's just hold it in pit lane till the last lap yeah so we can limp it around tag behind
27:30the leader and let's see if it'll make it all the way around without going kabang
27:35well races are being won with cars mark cole that shouldn't have done another lap haven't they
27:40oh yes oh yes rothman's porsche 1983 it was dying every the engine was seizing up and they
27:46managed just to get that last lap even stopped at one point they got it going on the starter motor
27:51again and al holbert brought it home to victory and this is this will be familiar to all old car
27:57owners or people who started off in naked old cars as he came past the start finish straight he heard the
28:02he smelled the unmistakable smell of the radiator radiator vacating the remnants of his water that
28:09horrible horrible smell of coolant just whooshed back in towards him and he knew he had eight and
28:15a half miles to go and the car was dry and it was not an air-cooled flat six it was a water-cooled flat six
28:22and they built them tough in bisac somehow it made it round and they won and that gave verne schoop and
28:27also of course his uh his only victory at le mans verne has it verne has that car it's at home in
28:33australia teams may go to the pit wall they will go to the pit ball they've now been given permission
28:40across the pit road as the cars come back down the mulsanne straight for the final time and the
28:46engineers on the pit wall will be joined by many many team members as soon as they see that and get the
28:52okay from their team bosses and yes the rush begins and moments later after the cars cross
28:59the line the rush onto the track to be below the podium at le mans will begin as well whatever the
29:04weather we've put up with a lot of this in the last 24 hours fans have been wet and dry as often as the
29:11teams liz but this moment of celebration this moment of jubilation at the end of this enormous achievement
29:18is always to be celebrated yeah and i think especially this race with with everything we've
29:23been faced with with the tragedy the hard thought racing the difficult conditions everything i think
29:29the teams are going to be more exhausted than they ever have been before and it's just it's just a
29:35different le mans no it's it's not going to finish the way we always do we're not it hasn't flowed
29:40has it no it hasn't it's it's not like i say it's not a le mans to remember fondly i don't think
29:44good call from uh gary paravani he says the number eight slowed down to let the leaders go by him so
29:51he didn't have to do another lap and very good point of course yes well spotted yeah that that
29:58well spotted you martin because you said you thought that no he absolutely passed him for the lead and
30:02then they we said you know look after your tires case it rains again and uh okay he dropped back when
30:09liz was talking pay attention i can't watch the screen when liz is talking because i'm magnetically
30:13attracted to listen to her so christensen leading the last lap bertram baguette leading p2 on the last
30:20lap richard leitz for porsche a porsche one two and what a return to le mans after 14 years with no
30:27factory team here and of course porsche victory also in the privateer category the gt am for raymond
30:34marac's uh high performance uh it's a performance matmuk team from rouen so that's a win for the 23rd
30:41porsche fantastic from them a really great effort well no puncture this time no dramatic sideways
30:48moments caught by the onboard camera but it will be a fourth second place finish at le mans for toyota
30:55thinking of ukio katiyama's dramatic late race late race charge to try and catch the winning audi that
31:01was defeated by debris and a puncture that was then this is now audi's tom christensen alan mcnisch and
31:10luke duval the man who claimed pole will win for audi they started first they finished first in the
31:182013 le mans 24 hours and if that is all you ever hear about this race there is so much more that we
31:28couldn't possibly fit in nine wins now for mr le mans and tears in his eyes too i am very glad to say
31:38thank you very much
31:45alan your third victory here how much does that mean to you fantastic it is uh for everybody at audi
31:52sport it was a tremendously difficult race there's no question about it for tom loik and i and our
31:58engineer grew we've had a fantastic start to the season and it's just so beautiful three is a much
32:03nicer number than two especially when it's wins at le mans thank you very much
32:11of course that car started this race at one point ahead in the world championship double points
32:15for the win yeah to add to silverstone and we just saw our gte pro winner finishing as well
32:22porsche one two in the gte pro class oak racing one two and a nissan engine one two three four
32:31in lmp two as dr ulrich does a center stroke mansell and hitches the ride and in the gte am class it will
32:39be jean-carl vernet who takes victory because loronzo case in second has already crossed the line
32:46and let's go around again to finish marco chochi will complete the podium ahead of a valiant a really
32:52really strong run from the dempsey del pierro entry they claim fourth in the amateur class
33:04him samatma porsche's first and second nose to tail but it is the 76 car that wins
33:12it's gte am class raymond narak christophe bourré and their sub for the weekend jean-carl vernet he's done
33:20a sterling job along with both drivers and from eduardo freighters and we echo this i think liz a
33:27huge thank you to everyone for your work on this event just above and beyond the call of duty probably
33:33doesn't quite cover it no it really doesn't i mean this race wouldn't happen without the help from
33:38the marshals and all the support and the volunteers who put all of their time their energy and a lot of
33:43their life into it and we we do thank you all for everything that you do absolutely we did it
33:48nice one congratulations congratulations such a great moment after yeah last year it's incredible
33:56yeah i mean this time last year i was laying on my back in uh the lamar hospital uh but yeah totally
34:04different outcome this year and uh i felt like i needed a bit of luck this time this race has been so
34:09cruel to me so many times but the team just done an amazing job we did the best we could every call
34:16with the tires uh in any any situation we we extracted the most we could from the car
34:22and ourselves as drivers as well so i'm very proud of the job we've done audi are on a different level
34:27together from the moment we arrived here and uh no i'm just really proud to uh finally end up on the
34:34podium at this race and obviously i have to say um about alan simonson uh i've known him since 1996
34:45was the first time i raced with him in go-karts and uh i only heard the news after my first quadruple
34:52stint it's very hard especially with what happened to me last year to fight my demon my own demons and
34:59carry on driving and yeah it's sad sad news and it puts everything into perspective and my thoughts
35:06go out to his family and and the team as well and i'm sure he would have wanted everyone to carry on
35:11racing and yeah it's uh for sure thank you enjoy for him as well thanks all we can do is echo
35:19out to these sentiments i mean you know it was a dreadful dreadful tragedy for his family for his wife
35:25for his baby daughter and for all his friends and his teammates just heartbreaking and uh and an
35:31awful way to start a wonderful motor racing event it just reminds us motorsport is dangerous so
35:38patrick you hand up so close to the podium but i think this tonight and yesterday and today you
35:44impress a lot of people so close um we made it we got here uh it's been a great experience uh
35:59i felt we improved as the race went on and uh we finished the race which is what we want to do we
36:05wanted to get on the podium and we were so close patrick did a fantastic job so did joe the team's been
36:10great to work with and it's been a great ride and it's a it's a shame for it all to come to an end
36:15right now you know it's uh it's very emotional and we'll probably release a lot drink a lot tonight
36:20but uh thank you it's been fun to be with uh eurosport on this and to share this journey you guys made it
36:27very special you made us look very good and i can't thank you enough everybody eurosport and all the
36:32fans who've supported us along the way i i wish we had a better result for you but hey we'll come back
36:37next year hopefully thank you for your kind words uh you're a fantastic team and you did all the very
36:42good job we feel a lot of emotion oh yeah it's it's an amazing experience we're all very tired very
36:48numb in some ways it seems like 10 years since we started this project even though it's only been a
36:53few years uh just amazing and now we definitely
37:04well those of you who caught the long shot of the podium not only are there lots of danish flags
37:12in the crowd but as we pull back you will see that since last night the danish flag has been flown at
37:19half mast above the leman podium as a mark of respect for alan simonson and now perhaps it will be raised
37:26all the way up again for our danish winner and i'm sure that we'll have a very very emotional tom christensen
37:34mark cole of all his whims this perhaps will mean the most to him here today yeah out is 12th victory
37:56is
38:05uh
38:09You can see, it's a job, man, incredibly long, 9th victory here.
38:13It's amazing, for you, man.
39:09I don't think so, but I don't think so.
39:39Thank you very much.
40:09And we are down here at the podium, where the podium ceremony will start soon, behind
40:22us the drivers, the winners, the winning car, and Justine, she talked already to Luc Duval.
40:30Loic, such an emotional day.
40:34Yeah, I mean, 24 hours or more, it's always the same.
40:39You know, I always used to cry at the end, you know, in the past, because the race was
40:45not what I wanted today because we won.
40:50It was a tough one from the second lap of the race with the news we had.
40:56It was a hard race, but at the end, it's good.
41:00So, you know, it's the ninth win for Tom, so I'm a little bit part of the legend.
41:05Alan got two difficult years, and now he's back on the top, so that's a nice answer to
41:11some people who used to do some criticism, and it's my first podium here with a win,
41:17so it's fantastic.
41:18You did such an amazing job since the beginning you are now in this team, and since the beginning
41:24of the week.
41:25I think they can, your two teammates can really be grateful to have you in the team.
41:32I mean, I'm trying to do my best, I mean, I remember last year, exactly at the same time
41:38we were at the park for me, and Tom told me it should be good to be teammates, and one year
41:43after we win Le Mans, so for sure it's something big, it's a big team effort, the whole crew,
41:50engineers, mechanics, all those people, my family, it's big.
41:56Sean.
41:57Sean.
41:58Sean.
41:59Sean.
42:00Sean.
42:01Sean.
42:26It reminds us that automobile racing is a dangerous sport.
42:35It reminds us that the automobile sport is a dangerous sport.
42:42Adam Simonsen assumed it with passion.
42:47I would like to think of his family, his parents, sisters, brothers, family and friends.
43:08I ask you a formidable ovation.
43:15Jeff Yates asking for a huge ovation for the memory of Alan Simonsen,
43:21who died doing what he loved for his friends, for his family, for his mother, his wife, his baby daughter.
43:29It's going to be with a heavy heart.
43:55I think that everybody in all four classes comes out onto the podium today.
44:05David Richards, I think echoing what we all really think that if somebody had to win it,
44:13I'm glad that it's a Dane who knew him so well, who can really appreciate what it means to his family.
44:22Certainly a day of mixed emotions, no question for everybody.
44:26So Audi, as we say, 12 victories.
44:28Toyota, it's the fourth time they finished second in this great race.
44:33And in 1992, Kinoshita was the engineer.
44:37But this is their new program. This is the prototype program.
44:40Tom Walkinshaw always said it takes three years to win Le Mans with a new type of car.
44:44And so maybe next year will be Toyota's year.
44:47Well, also winning the GTE Pro and AM classes, the 99th and 100th class wins at Le Mans for Porsche
44:57in the 50th year of the 911, which was commemorated on the cars.
45:02Mr. Le Mans Ancien and Mr. Le Mans concurrent.
45:06The former Mr. Le Mans and the current Mr. Le Mans.
45:08Jackie Hicks, one of the legends of the sport.
45:11And Tom Christensen, the current legend of the sport.
45:16I think Audi we expected, but Porsche always never saw that coming, did we?
45:22No, we didn't. I think at the start of this race, we all felt that Aston Martin would take it.
45:28Definitely there were so many entries.
45:30I think there was some heavy cloud over Aston Martin today in more ways than one.
45:37And, yeah, I just feel like Audi can say nothing other than they won this today for Alan Simonson and for his family and his friends.
45:46And for everyone who knew him and respected him as a racing driver.
45:49I think every team here will agree with you.
45:52Every team, every man, woman and child is, oh yes, no question at all about that.
45:57And it'll come as no sympathy at all to his friends or family.
46:11It is the first time since 1987 that we have lost a driver in this race.
46:17The ACO work continually on the safety of this track, as do all track owners.
46:24We want excitement, we want close racing, but we want our drivers safe.
47:07Bye.
47:38Every year, I'm not even going to say largely, almost exclusively because of the influence of one man who has now claimed his ninth Le Mans victory.
47:49Tom Christensen, without question, has introduced his countrymen to a love of a sport of which they probably had all but no knowledge before.
48:00Even the great Dane John Nielsen, who won before Tom Christensen's era, was never the big star that Christensen has become.
48:10And there are thousands upon thousands of Danish fans here every year as a result.
48:15And for them, what started as a week of fun and festivities took a very sour turn yesterday.
48:23And I'm sure this is at least something to cherish in.
48:27Finally, Liz Halliday, a bit of blooming sunshine.
48:31Where's this come from?
48:32And we see Tom Christensen smiling up at the sky and pointing undoubtedly to the sun that's now shining on us and to his friend, Alan.
48:42So it is 2005, but Tom Christensen accepted the crown from Jackie Eakes for the most wins.
48:51Jackie had won six victories, his last in 82.
48:54Tom took his seventh in 2005, followed up with another one in 2008.
48:59But it's taken him another five years to get back onto that top step of the podium.
49:04Such has been the competition from young drivers and from, of course, at the time, Persia.
49:10Has it been that long, my goodness?
49:11Yes.
49:11Wow.
49:13I had no idea.
49:14It's been that long since he won, it seems like, a couple years ago.
49:16Yeah.
49:17Well, that's since he's been on the top step, of course.
49:19He's not been totally absent from the podium.
49:21So, again, you know, you see that smile, that little shy schoolboy smile that he still has, and you forget that he may not necessarily have been on the top step.
49:37I'm sure he'll never forget his first.
49:42I'm sure he'll remember all of them.
49:44And for Loic Duval, he'll remember this first for all sorts of emotional reasons as well.
49:48The car started with 10 wins on board, and finished with 13 Le Mans wins on board.
49:56It's wonderful.
49:58What a dream.
50:05Congratulations.
50:06Great job.
50:10Jack Eakes, one of the most genial people in motorsport, a great ambassador, and he is Mr. Le Mans, even though Tom's Christmas.
50:18Hanson has passed his total.
50:21And again, I think, actually, he summed it up.
50:23You know, you won it for us.
50:24Yeah.
50:25That's what we wanted.
50:26That's what we all wanted from 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
50:37Some of these guys are going to need seriously long arms, aren't they, for all the watches they've got.
50:44A wonderful Le Mans winners Rolex.
50:47I'm sure Loic Duval will be winning proudly before he even gets back to Audi hospitality.
50:55I mean, we have the Rolex Daytona.
50:57Is there a Rolex Le Mans yet?
50:59Have they created one?
51:00As a mark?
51:01I'm not sure they have.
51:02No, it's probably a perpetual oyster or something.
51:05It must be engraved on the back, surely.
51:08Oh, I'm sure it is.
51:09But there is an actual Rolex Daytona.
51:12There isn't, as far as I'm aware, a Rolex Le Mans.
51:15But again, you know, with this association with the greatest endurance race in the world,
51:20as certainly we sit from our side of the Atlantic, there's no disrespect,
51:24then I wouldn't be at all surprised.
51:26I wouldn't be at all surprised.
51:28It's always a good thing to introduce a new waddle for a launch manufacturer.
51:34I mean, make some words out of that.
51:36And I still see this as the greatest motor race in the world, even though I'm from California,
51:39so I don't care what the other Americans think.
51:42For me, it's the best.
51:43You ask drivers, have you been to Daytona?
51:45Yeah.
51:45How do you do?
51:46I won the watch.
51:47That's all they need to tell you, you know.
51:49They just pull the sleeve up.
51:50Ryan DL did that to me yesterday, the other day, and I couldn't tell whether it was a Le Mans
51:57winner's watch or a Daytona winner's watch, because he's now got two of the latter and
52:03one of the former.
52:05And now the grand trophy, the perpetual trophy for the vainqueur des 24 heures du Mans.
52:13The winners of the Le Mans 24 hours for 2013, Audi, the number two car driven by Tom Christensen,
52:25Lloyd Duval and Alan Mudwish.
52:43Well, I congratulations to our winners, to our podium finishers, to everyone who finished
52:53this race.
52:54In the end, I think 41, maybe, cars actually made the distance, possibly even 42.
53:04But out of 56 starters, certainly the attrition rate in a topsy-turvy race was remarkably low
53:12until the very closing stages.
53:15To anybody who survives this race and gets to the finish.
53:18It was my father.
53:20He said in March, he died and he said that we will win this year.
53:29But this race, this victory was for my dad.
53:35He gave me all the motivation, determination in this sport.
53:40To do the best I can for the most wonderful team in the world, the Audi Sport team.
53:46He can wait for the next victory of mine.
53:52This victory today is, I dedicate to Alan Simonsen, a great fellow Dane.
53:58Tom Christensen.
54:01Tom Christensen.
54:02Bravo, Dr. Lois.
54:16Perfect choice of words and emotion, really, from Tom Christensen.
54:20I don't think he could have said it any better.
54:22His father passed away during the year.
54:30Great satisfaction for me.
54:32Thank you to Tom and Alan for all their help,
54:36for getting me to this top step of the podium.
54:39For everyone who's helped me, helped us.
54:43A really tough 24 hours here at Le Mans,
54:45and we're delighted to have won.
54:48As Tom said, this is for Alan Simonsen.
55:0515th time I've been here at Le Mans.
55:07It's the toughest race for the team,
55:15for the drivers,
55:16and for everybody
55:19who have decided to continue in this race.
55:24We've decided
55:25how to
55:27continue throughout
55:29the years,
55:31throughout this race.
55:33There was never a chance to relax.
55:35We had to be ready for everything.
55:38It was terribly intense.
55:49But we dedicate,
55:51the whole team dedicates
55:53our victory to
55:55the lost young Dane.
55:57I'm sure Anthony Levitson
55:58has something to say to the fans.
56:02Super result for Toyota on the podium.
56:05I just want to say a huge thanks
56:06to all the fans.
56:08Your dedication is amazing.
56:09My first time off here at Le Mans.
56:11I've been here six times.
56:13It's an incredible view.
56:14Thank you so much for all your support.
56:16I hope you enjoyed the race.
56:19Mixed emotions for me, really.
56:20The job that Toyota did
56:22and the guys standing alongside me.
56:23It was faultless.
56:25But obviously,
56:26a day that's shadowed
56:27by the sad news
56:30of Alan Timerson,
56:31the loss.
56:31I think we all share that sadness
56:33and a cruel reminder
56:35that our sport is dangerous.
56:38Our thoughts,
56:38all of us standing here
56:39are with him and his family
56:40at this time.
56:41Very mixed emotions
56:43for all of us.
56:44Thank you very much.
56:45Ladies and gentlemen,
56:46the Toyota have been here.
56:48Thank you very much.
56:53Confirmation of the final result then.
56:56Audi number two
56:57against all odds
56:58and perhaps against everybody's expectations
57:01claiming victory overall.
57:03The two Toyotas
57:04in second and fourth position
57:06with the number three Audi
57:08finishing off the podium spots.
57:10Great result
57:12for the Oak Racing Morgan Nissan's
57:14first and second in class.
57:17The dock car of John Martin
57:21and his crew,
57:22AVR Delta car,
57:24finishing third in the LMP2 class.
57:26One, two in the GTE Pro class
57:29for Porsche
57:30with the Aston Martin
57:31finishing in third place
57:33and in the Amp class.
57:34Victory for Porsche as well
57:36with Ferraris completing the podium.
57:42Well, in the end,
57:46it is a race
57:47that is going to be remembered
57:48probably for the loss
57:50of Alan Simonson.
57:52His tragic death
57:54early in the race
57:55in an accident
57:56has robbed us of
57:58a great friend
57:59to many drivers
58:00and a very great racing talent
58:02and of that,
58:03I'm afraid,
58:04there is very little more
58:06that we can add
58:07than the sentiments
58:07that have already been expressed.
58:09So,
58:10I think perhaps
58:11it's time to draw a veil
58:12over the 2013
58:13Le Mans 24 hours.
58:16The 90th anniversary
58:17of this great race
58:18has not given us
58:20a great reason
58:21or cause
58:22to celebrate.
58:23but
58:23we sincerely hope
58:25that you have
58:26enjoyed the coverage
58:27and that we've been able
58:29to make sense
58:30of what at times
58:31never mind at times
58:32all the way through
58:33almost right from the start
58:35has been mayhem
58:36and confusion.
