00:00:00Rear portion of the bumper has just dislocated itself.
00:00:04It's going to be very tight now for the number two car to get to the end of this race with just one more pit stop.
00:00:11Having said that, I think it's going to be the same situation for the second place car.
00:00:17I think the third place car is probably going to have to make two pit stops before the end of the race.
00:00:22Ant-Date, the two Toyotas, it's going to be very marginal whether they can get to the end of this race on just one more stop.
00:00:31So that's why Ulrich told Oliver Jarvis and the number three guys,
00:00:36you've got to go flat out because they've probably got to spend a little bit more time on pit lane, possibly, than the Toyotas.
00:00:42Still lapping a second quicker than the Aston Martin is the Porsche of Richard Leeds.
00:00:48He's doing a great job.
00:00:49He's underneath the minute mark, gapped to the P2 class, but lapping at 3.56 is my goodness.
00:01:01That was incredible.
00:01:02You know what?
00:01:03Don't count your chickens.
00:01:05That's the car that's battling for third place in P2.
00:01:10That's John Martin aboard that car.
00:01:12I think he was unsighted because there was a car between them.
00:01:14That's exactly right.
00:01:15In fairness to him, that was very close.
00:01:18He saw the car on his inside and he wouldn't have seen Ann Davidson and the Toyota coming up around the outside as well.
00:01:24So, yeah, that was a very scary move because you could see there the...
00:01:29Wow.
00:01:31It's scary.
00:01:32The onboard does that justice, doesn't it?
00:01:34When you know what's happening.
00:01:36Oh, goodness me.
00:01:36Heads up, heads up, though.
00:01:37I mean, you know, John pretty much did nothing wrong.
00:01:40He's just taking the race line out of that corner.
00:01:42Absolutely.
00:01:42He's having...
00:01:43And Ann Davidson here.
00:01:45He's looking for the opportunity to get past.
00:01:46He doesn't want to lose any time at all.
00:01:48But, you know, Ant in the past might have just gone for that in any case.
00:01:53And, you know, that could have caused a wreck.
00:01:54So, heads up to him, particularly this far into the race, to have that presence of mind,
00:01:58to realise that, wait a minute, you know, maybe he's going to come across here
00:02:02because that's the kind of the logical thing to do.
00:02:05And he planned for that.
00:02:06Well, I don't know if he planned for it, but he was prepared for that.
00:02:08Yeah, well, he was able to get out of it.
00:02:10Oh, God.
00:02:10Unfortunately, he gets more traffic here.
00:02:12It's a Ferrari corner.
00:02:13And it's at Mulsanne.
00:02:14My God.
00:02:14Memories.
00:02:15Oh, and he's gone.
00:02:16He was too busy looking in his mirrors.
00:02:17Well, no, I think he was too busy trying to carry as much speed into there as he possibly could
00:02:21to get out of the way.
00:02:22Oh, no, he's buried in the gravel.
00:02:23There he has.
00:02:24Well, there you are.
00:02:25He was no contact, but...
00:02:28Tony V-lander.
00:02:29Pretty much the same.
00:02:30Away he goes.
00:02:31Let's have a look at that, shall we?
00:02:33This was the moment.
00:02:34A big wake-up call.
00:02:36Momentary lacks a conversation.
00:02:37Concentration, perhaps.
00:02:39Not even close, was it?
00:02:40No, not at all.
00:02:41That was almost like there was something on the track, like oil or something.
00:02:44I think he just didn't want to hold up.
00:02:46Very, very...
00:02:46And Davidson, I really do.
00:02:48And he just sort of got distracted for certain.
00:02:51Exactly.
00:02:51And left his braking too late.
00:02:54But that's a very strange mistake for somebody, the experience that Tony V-lander has in this
00:02:58sort of a car.
00:02:59Big buddies with Kimi Räikkönen is Tony V-lander, fellow Finns, of course.
00:03:04He'll be livid about that.
00:03:05Yeah, he won't be very happy.
00:03:06Because, I mean, that number 71 car, they were unlucky at the very beginning of the race
00:03:10to be caught out, like so many other GTE cars, by that safety car.
00:03:14But they've made various mistakes as well during the race.
00:03:18There was a pit stop penalty, at least one, if not even two.
00:03:21And another near miss in the pits.
00:03:23I think they revolved another incident actually this morning in the pit lane.
00:03:28So, yeah, it's been a dramatic race for that number 71 Ferrari.
00:03:31And they're still running in fourth place in the class.
00:03:34But I'm sure they're thinking, woulda, coulda, shoulda.
00:03:36They're three laps behind, though, now.
00:03:38Meanwhile, I need six more followers to get to my target of 1,000 followers this weekend.
00:03:43At Damien Faulkner, please.
00:03:46Yes, tweet, tweet, tweet.
00:03:48Oh, not.
00:03:48Yes, Christensen is our leader, our glorious leader.
00:03:53And it will be glorious for Audi as well.
00:03:54They have not had things all their own way.
00:03:57I think that's the crucial point about the challenge from Toyota.
00:04:00We're going to take ourselves a commercial break.
00:04:02Don't forget, you can indeed find us on Twitter.
00:04:05That's Jeremy Shaw Racer or Carlton Kirby.
00:04:08Or, indeed, Liz Halliday.
00:04:10Somebody else as well has got a Twitter account.
00:04:11I'm not quite sure it is.
00:04:13And somebody hasn't.
00:04:13It's Damien Faulkner.
00:04:17F-A-U-L-K-N-E-R with an E in the Damien.
00:04:22There you go.
00:04:23I've done it for you.
00:04:23That should crack it.
00:04:26Thank you, Carlton.
00:04:26There's various other Damien Faulkners show up here as well.
00:04:28There's a dozen of them.
00:04:29It's the one with the funky logo then.
00:04:31Oh, my goodness.
00:04:32I didn't think that anybody else existed in the world called Damien Faulkner.
00:04:35I thought one was bad enough.
00:04:37There's an old raft of you.
00:04:40Raft of the Medusa.
00:04:41Yes, it was a torturous journey.
00:04:44And so it was proved.
00:04:46Look up the picture.
00:04:47You'll see what I mean.
00:04:48We'll take that commercial break.
00:04:50And we will back with a little less levity and a little more focus.
00:04:55And I'll tell you something.
00:04:56This is going to be dramatic.
00:04:58It's going to be traumatic.
00:05:15BIRDS CHIRP

00:07:54Welcome back to Le Mans, one hour and 21 minutes to go in this 24 hour race of 81st running
00:08:10of the Le Mans 24 hours, the 90th anniversary of the first ever race here, Jeremy Shaw alongside
00:08:15Carlton Kirby and Damien Faulkner, haven't missed a thing, our Audi's Tom Christensen,
00:08:21the Calibre 2 still leads by a lap over at Davidson in Calibre 8 who is just coming in I think for a scheduled pit stop.
00:08:28Look at this for an urgency. In the meantime, the battle for GTE rage is onward guys.
00:08:34Unbelievable, looking at Leitz, it's what, 1.6 seconds between the pair of them and an absolutely monster lap,
00:08:42while the tyres have come to him, 3.55 posted by Mukher, there he is in the art car with the twin lights dinky
00:08:49in the middle of the radiator, there he is, that's the car we're watching and in fact I think that,
00:08:56well if you're into poetry, surely a poetic ending has to be that car taking victory, it's got the
00:09:02none too small matter of having to get past Leitz there.
00:09:05Yeah, he's just on his fastest lap of the race at 3.55.791, I don't know where that came from but he was,
00:09:12I think, six seconds behind a couple of laps ago before the break, so that's come down big time.
00:09:18And you can actually see it, is it Richard Leitz?
00:09:20Yeah.
00:09:21Has he got a vibration?
00:09:22Yeah, it looked like it, didn't it?
00:09:23Has he maybe locked the tyre?
00:09:25I don't know, let's see as he speeds up here what happens.
00:09:28You can see that spun, wasn't it, earlier on, what, 40 minutes or so ago.
00:09:34Yeah, they've taken new tyres since, no they haven't, have they?
00:09:37No, no, no, no.
00:09:38These tyres were okay back then.
00:09:39Yeah.
00:09:40It looks like from the onboard shot there under braking anyway, but maybe it was just the undulations on the road.
00:09:46There is the art car just being passed by one of the P2s, that's the vehicle we're concerned about.
00:09:53And at the moment, it's in the hands of Mucha, and it's looking terrific.
00:10:00Well, we wanted a grandstand finish to at least one of the classes, and I just feel that this 90th edition of the Le Mans 24 hours
00:10:10could well just prove to be an amazing finish to what has been an extraordinarily troubled 90th anniversary.
00:10:19Yeah, it has.
00:10:20You know, I was in, I was in the pit, in the Porsche pit earlier on when Fred Makareki crashed the leading number 99 Aston Martin.
00:10:33And that was the moment that enabled Porsche to move into the lead of the race in GT.
00:10:39But, um, it was quite emotional because I was watching the Porsche guys and, you know, not a flicker of recognition
00:10:46that they'd just taken the, you know, the lead in the biggest race in the world.
00:10:50That was, that was pretty classy, I thought, from those guys.
00:10:53Yeah.
00:10:54Unbelievable.
00:10:55Yes.
00:10:56Now, let's have a look what's going on.
00:10:58Uh, wets.
00:10:59Intermediates.
00:11:00Let's have a look.
00:11:01Do you know the, uh, white band?
00:11:02No, it looks like slicks.
00:11:03It looks like slicks.
00:11:04Same old.
00:11:05Let's have a look.
00:11:06Oh, do you know?
00:11:07So quick.
00:11:08A few spots of rain here as well.
00:11:09And the clouds are looking pretty, pretty, pretty heavy.
00:11:12Oh.
00:11:13And here it comes.
00:11:14To our right, yeah.
00:11:15Here it comes.
00:11:16It's starting to rain heavy now on pit road.
00:11:18I, I, I think it's that end of the racetrack, you know, the, the Dunlop Esses, the Forestesses,
00:11:22Tertrouge and the Montsand that the race, that the, the rain is going to hit if it comes.
00:11:27But we've seen this constantly, regularly throughout this 24 hours, guys, haven't we?
00:11:32Time and time again.
00:11:33And here is your battle for position.
00:11:35And this is the fight for the lead.
00:11:36And they scream past, uh, the pit entry.
00:11:39And they're looking very skittery as they, uh, cut that little final turn.
00:11:44The pair of them with inside of each other.
00:11:46It is market in the Aston Martin there.
00:11:48The, uh, almost a trickle, a night and day art car.
00:11:51There it is.
00:11:52And he's having a look at Richard Leitz ahead of him.
00:11:54And there is the hair with the hound on his tail.
00:11:57And of course, yeah, this is going to be much more difficult for Richard Leitz,
00:12:00because he's, he's got to feel the, uh, grip first or the lack of grip first.
00:12:04And then Stefan Mucha will have a fantastic, uh, reference from him in front.
00:12:09So, um, yeah, so this is, this is, this is going to be a good test of Richard Leitz here.
00:12:15It is.
00:12:16So then the, uh, number two car and the number eight car.
00:12:20Uh, pitted at pretty much the same time there.
00:12:22I think we, we, we saw that.
00:12:24Oh!
00:12:25What the time is!
00:12:29I bet that's the number.
00:12:33Wow.
00:12:34That's buried.
00:12:35Oh my goodness.
00:12:36And he's, uh, he's lucky.
00:12:37You know, that is buried.
00:12:39Absolutely.
00:12:40And it's the seven car.
00:12:41Uh, so, uh, Audi's one and three at the moment.
00:12:44Lapierre exits.
00:12:45He's okay.
00:12:46The car very second hand.
00:12:47Let's get back to that GT battle out front.
00:12:49Because, uh, believe me, Mucha is all over the back of his man.
00:12:53Let's have a look at it, Jerry.
00:12:54This is where it happened.
00:12:55Whoa!
00:12:56Yeah.
00:12:57You can see it slippery there.
00:12:58It's raining.
00:12:59It's wow.
00:13:00It's really treacherous.
00:13:02Goodness gracious me.
00:13:04Is that the forestesses?
00:13:06I think that's going into the Porsche.
00:13:07Yeah, I think it is.
00:13:08That's where it is.
00:13:09Yeah.
00:13:10Well, I'd love to get back to this GT battle.
00:13:11Uh, we will, uh, get it as soon as we can.
00:13:13Slippery surface.
00:13:14Yeah.
00:13:15You're absolutely right, Damien.
00:13:16It's the entrance through the Porsche.
00:13:17You've got to look at Lapierre.
00:13:18Uh, just, uh, devastated there.
00:13:19That car is buried.
00:13:20That's not going to go anywhere after that.
00:13:21He's, that car is out of the race.
00:13:22And that will be our, well, that'll be our 12th retirement, I suppose.
00:13:23Maybe the—
00:13:35Uh, he is indeed.
00:13:38Uh, Sebastian Bohemi.
00:13:40Going crazy now.
00:13:42We're just waiting for this battle to come within sight of our commentary position because
00:13:46it seems we've been abandoned.
00:13:48waiting for this battle to come within sight of our commentary position because it seems we've
00:13:52been abandoned by our director of pictures here unfortunately we take what we are supplied with
00:13:59and the rain is well and truly here look at this you know what that last stop maybe they should
00:14:04have gone for wets or at least it to me it's an hour and 15 to go i suppose if they think they
00:14:08can ride this one out but it's heavy and it's causing all kinds of issues here some very very
00:14:14good drivers getting him very wrong and here's your battle for gt that is mocha harrying in the
00:14:20aston martin behind the porsche of leitz at the moment and they look like they're in a dry part
00:14:24of the track it's not going to be like that for long boy it isn't it it's just tremendous this
00:14:30battle it's been raging all the way through the west look at mocha closes they go through indianapolis
00:14:35down into the inside no that is covered by regard leads fabulous right this is going to be a drag
00:14:44race who's got the best grip right now well the aston is the one but the rain's coming down and this
00:14:49is where oh look at the spray getting kicked up unbelievable so they're coming up now to the
00:14:54point to where these yellow flags are out so we can hear yes no overtaking and take it easy boys
00:15:00take it very very easy do do respect those yellow flags for goodness sake nothing to be gained by trying
00:15:06to be brave here at all there we are and they do respect them they'll trundle through like on a
00:15:12sunday afternoon uh oh i'll tell you what they're on what are they thinking now damien uh they're
00:15:19thinking of whether they should go into the pits and take on websites number two car is in they're
00:15:25getting very close the race leader is into the pit lane well here's your call it's going to be the
00:15:29porsche first maybe this will suit uh mocha just to sit on the back of leaks and see what his decision
00:15:34is going to be round they come in to a view of our next camera leaks it is that leads this is the
00:15:43battle for the lead right now porsche versus aston it's a mocha versus going on to pit lane now who's
00:15:49coming in who's coming in is the porsche going to make it oh my goodness where's the picture
00:15:55no the porsche stayed out and the aston is and the aston is wow there's a gamble for you
00:16:01absolutely it was a bit of fair sheneligance going on and the aston has come in uh the porsche
00:16:06blitz is out there well he believes that he's going to carry on raining and i'm looking over into
00:16:11the middle distance and i've got to tell you it is raining just about everywhere here it may well
00:16:15be a good call they're all going for weds the race is on right now yeah i think there's the the
00:16:21yeah that audi what audi's in both no the it's christiansson is in he's going on to
00:16:27cars in yet so it's about to bring me in also i think this is a good call by aston martin i
00:16:31really do well uh it had better be i'll tell you that much because it's grisly out there an
00:16:37extremely wet looking mark carl has just walked in we'll ring him out i mean we'll be with you in a
00:16:41moment there's a stream of about 15 cars ahead of those two gt cars all of them came onto pit lane
00:16:47four wet weather tires well it was a big roll of the dice by elites wasn't it he's gone out he's
00:16:52gone another lap on slicks now he's they've got to hope that there is a safety car deployment at
00:16:58the wrong time for some of these guys oh it's grisly those who went up on the funfair and paid
00:17:03their tickets wish they hadn't it does it's a huge tempest that's blown oh man look at that that's
00:17:09treacherous we've got two cars off as we look deep in here p3 no no it's a body and it's bad
00:17:19and you know what we're saying about safety cars yeah look you can't even yeah you can't even
00:17:24control the cars on the street oh goodness me slicks you've had it you're literally sunk do you
00:17:31know what aston martin made a great call here safety car yeah safety car deployed two cars in the barriers
00:17:37what's the implication of this safety cars uh call jeremy sure well the implication is where
00:17:44does the is the aston martin going to be held up caught by the second safety car not the first one
00:17:50that's the implication of this safety car coming out right now well i don't know whether that was
00:17:55in the thoughts of porsche uh but uh it was likely we were going to have an accident at this point and
00:18:00look how benign this looks until the strike uh this is a drive-by here did anyone get tagged no
00:18:07goodness me yeah in the 11th caution of the day look at the damage there to the number 46 car what a
00:18:13shame for that they've had a strong run all day long they were running in uh six position race
00:18:19before that incident and a little bit bad at the wheel of that car but there were several other guys
00:18:26off the road as well do you know i just don't know one of the great things about this i suppose in a
00:18:33certain way is that we still we still don't know what else is this race going to throw at us though
00:18:40it's absolutely remarkable oliver jarvis came in there's a long stop by number three car
00:18:45the the question is where are the number two and number and the number eight were they held at the
00:18:52end of the pit lane so we'll have to wait and see until we see a picture of that whether they're
00:18:55able to get out before the pit exit was closed well i understand this is replay pictures and the
00:19:03aston did get clear i have no view of the pit lane i'm afraid to tell you uh the exit uh from it
00:19:10uh but i believe this is recorded pictures from a little while ago and uh we'll wait for some of
00:19:15the onboards with this is a uh trullier's car i think oh look at that for a view how's about that
00:19:22wow ah and uh complete 360 and continue passing the um number one odi with a 360 you know what that
00:19:29mammoth car has been shedding body work for some time and i'm uh whether that is uh repaired and
00:19:35these are recorded pictures uh forgive me there you go we're on replay broadleys are out
00:19:40and uh there is a very very sad looking lap yeah number seven guys but i'm surprised he managed to
00:19:46get it back well yeah i'd have thought he'd have gone farther away from the case he was walking away
00:19:49from the car wasn't he three meters isn't it 30 meters i think it is maybe he left his radio
00:19:55attached uh stretches doesn't goodness me well there you are um there is a zonal limit to how far you can
00:20:04go from the car so here's one safety car there is safety car b damien faulkner is keeping safety car
00:20:11watch for us and this is how they stack up right now mark cole reckons it's five meters that is all you
00:20:18can go away from the car if you go more than five minutes away from the car you can't get back in it
00:20:23exactly he was more than five meters away from that car how did he measure that well yeah really
00:20:27you know if he goes five and a half to be honest i thought it was three but anyway there you go i
00:20:32thought it was about three years i think it might be as gray as the scale it's to allow you to work
00:20:36on it and put a tire behind you and all that kind of thing um but he clearly didn't do that
00:20:41he's got too much in any case because he's a lot yeah really yeah there's a fair bit of damage there
00:20:46that's not a that's not a two minute repair job uh no he's not just coming in for wets and there's
00:20:51still more than an hour to go there's the number one car in well you know what um this race throws
00:20:57just about everything at you uh it is an emotional roller coaster you never never know how this will
00:21:03pan out uh right now leitz is on slicks and he's on track uh i've got to tell you that uh stefan
00:21:09mocha and the acid is still these listed as in the pits yeah because uh he they would have been uh
00:21:17held there at uh at pit exit yeah until the safety car has gone past but the safety car b just went
00:21:25past there 60 seconds ago well that case he'd have been let out now well maybe uh let's hope that's a
00:21:34crazy long time because that is a crazy long time well and this is crazy long raining
00:21:39weather that was lovely english wasn't it that's the heaviest that's the heaviest rain actually
00:21:43we've seen in a whole racing league isn't it that was properly there was there was some rain
00:21:49about uh what four o'clock in the morning perhaps which i which is a little bit of the race i missed
00:21:52well we're going on about we're banging on about how fantastic they are look at this uh traffic jam
00:21:57at the end of the pit lane that's truly uh held up there uh and incidentally uh the number one car
00:22:05is not listed as being held in the pits whereas uh mocha is so i still don't know until we get a
00:22:12long shot unfortunately there is that refueling probe that goes deep into the corvette my god
00:22:17it does it does safe yeah for safety reasons just get it it used to be horizontal down the sort of
00:22:23ground level didn't it yeah they're trying to get the fuel as low as they can and away from any sort
00:22:28any danger basically i think if the rear end of the car gets crushed then they don't want the fuel tank
00:22:34to be compromised so here is safety car c with the weather tech number 70 and i think that's the only
00:22:41car behind that yeah yeah and here comes a couple and this is uh which borsche is this 90 here's the 92 so
00:22:49he's staying out oh my god he stayed out yeah no no that's the 91. that's a 92 with the yeah they're
00:22:55both together there yep were they wow the 92's you're absolutely right unbelievable well uh maybe
00:23:03they're hoping it's gonna clear there's a little bit of blue sky around the place and and just look
00:23:07what we're looking at now the rain has abated well we did say there was a pregnant looking cloud and if
00:23:12it popped on a certain part of the circuit if i'm not mistaken and now that's exactly what happened
00:23:17there's certainly no point in bringing the porsche in now under the safety car you might as well
00:23:21say i mean if if there's damage to the barriers if there's whatever if it goes full court torture
00:23:26all the way to the end of the race yeah you don't want to give up that track position now you want
00:23:30to wait it wait as long as you possibly can before you bring that car in generally speaking if when
00:23:35the when the pace car comes out if you've got to do a full service change drivers tires full tank of
00:23:41fuel and everything then it might be worth coming in to make a stop under the safety car
00:23:47because the whole stop will take about a minute and a half you will lose about a minute and a half
00:23:52when they get back to green flag conditions by going from one safety car to the second safety car there
00:23:57are three safety cars employed around the eight and a half mile track here at the circuit de la sarte
00:24:03at le mans and so when you when you come in to make a pit stop you cannot go out of the pits and just
00:24:09join the tail of the cars that you were with before you have to wait until the next safety car comes
00:24:15around so it's a one and a half minute pit stop and that's when they go back to green that is
00:24:20about the time differential between the two pace cars safety cars when they go back to green flat
00:24:25racing it's very complicated this but if you just need fuel or just need a splash or a very quick stop
00:24:31then you need to wait until the end because by making that stop it'll only cost you about a minute
00:24:37so if you wait until they go back to green then you make the pit stop when they go back to green
00:24:42rather than make that pit stop under yellow you were that way you would only lose a minute
00:24:46if you'd made it under yellow you'd effectively lost a minute and a half do you catch me on that one
00:24:51i do and jeremy jeremy will be sending a tweet with all that information in just a few moments
00:24:55there'll be a bunch of tweets i must admit how many characters so forget that one
00:24:59so i hope you're listening no well there's no point there's no point in the porsche
00:25:03uh coming in because you know to make a hasty decision in these changing conditions they might as well
00:25:08wait on my goodness we've just had an enormous downpour here everything seems to be happening
00:25:13accidents everywhere richard leeds is okay at the moment i understand but things have all changed
00:25:18with the aston martin well yes uh was a big surprise i mean with the rain suddenly uh richard did not pit
00:25:26and uh we were all thinking what's going on you know but at the same time happens a big accident
00:25:31i guess the pit were closed or for sure not open a lot of car were pitting like also the aston martin
00:25:37and at the end of the day uh we're still on slick towers on the rain following a safety car but the
00:25:42aston lost i think one lap on a waiting at the house the red light so it's a little bit uh yeah
00:25:49crazy you know we went from uh we were sure so for uh not so good decision to to gain nearly a lap so
00:25:57wait and see so it's a big surprise for everybody right so it's right now just hanging out and seeing
00:26:03what happens surely he'll come in for wet tires in this weather yes i think so possible also now
00:26:08we are a little bit more safe in terms of competition so possibly it's our luck i don't
00:26:12know wait and see well we look forward to that thank you very much and that was roman dumas they're
00:26:18talking to liz halliday uh and he's talking about yes the porsche will probably come in but as
00:26:22explaining before that what that they will not make that pit stop yet and the the the the weird thing is
00:26:29why the aston lost a complete lap it should have only lost one one safety car length which under
00:26:37yellow flag conditions is about three and a half minutes but when they get back to green flag racing
00:26:42is only going to be about a minute and a half so but why it lost a complete lap i don't understand
00:26:46that because i think they made them someone's made a mistake here and it isn't really aston martin
00:26:51because it was about it's been five minutes since we've seen the porsche
00:26:55if i had to say i think the light man at the end of the pit lane has got it wrong
00:27:09so
00:27:11so
00:27:21so
00:27:23so
00:27:29so
00:28:03What did Nico say? What did he say?
00:28:09Nico went off, mate. Nico went off.
00:28:12Is he off the race? Is he off the race?
00:28:15He managed to bring the car back to the garage, but we're repairing it at the moment.
00:28:33He managed to bring the car back to the garage.
00:29:50Huge step downpour, which has changed the shape of the race for several people.
00:29:54It's one lap down from the leader.
00:29:57We are on the same lap as P2.
00:30:00And the gap is showing 4 minutes 17 seconds, but that's obviously for this safety car lap.
00:30:07Same lap as P2.
00:30:08So, face of the race changed by that storm to a certain extent, but now sun's out again, Jeremy.
00:30:16How bizarre is this?
00:30:18Yeah, and the number 92 car just came into the pit lane.
00:30:22So, they have been given this one lap advantage somehow.
00:30:27Martin Haven perhaps can explain that to us momentarily.
00:30:29And that being the case, it makes sense now for the Porsche to bring that car in.
00:30:37They're just going to go back one safety car, so they're still going to have a huge advantage over the Aston Martin.
00:30:41But how do the Aston Martin lose the complete lap?
00:30:44Except one safety car might be the difference between them being on the same lap and not at that particular point.
00:30:49Yeah, there's still going to be three-quarters of a lap.
00:30:50So, the Aston Martin came in and they took its slicks off and they put wets on, but then they spent a minute or two examining the front end, looking around the front end, suspension, wishbone, something there.
00:31:04Then off came the wets and he thought, right, back in the garage.
00:31:07No, on went slicks.
00:31:09It went out on slicks.
00:31:10Now, that Porsche, the 92, I think, just put wets on and didn't see properly.
00:31:19The 91 definitely has wets on.
00:31:22So, before, Porsche had a split strategy, one on slicks, one on wets.
00:31:27Aston had to decide which to cover.
00:31:30And this is a big, big escape we're seeing on the screen now for our leader as a car spins right across his bowels.
00:31:38There's a full 360 select second gear and motors on.
00:31:41So many moments.
00:31:43I mean, the leader of the LMP2 class spinning on the same patch of water as another car and only coming to a halt by the barriers.
00:31:50The No. 7 Toyota looked out of the race and then suddenly Nico Lapierre is back in it and driving it back to the pits without its nose on.
00:31:59Yeah, but he walked away from the car when he was out there, got out of the car.
00:32:03Do you know what?
00:32:03Having gone off on an aquaplaning moment, I'd have walked away from the car as well.
00:32:08And I'm not entirely sure that anybody is going to genuinely be able to disqualify him for that.
00:32:13He climbed on top of the pit wall.
00:32:15I don't think the 10 metre rule includes vertical height.
00:32:17Is it 10 or 5?
00:32:19Can you just confirm for viewers?
00:32:20Well, I don't know.
00:32:21You know, if you're in a gravel trap and you've aquaplaned off in a thunderstorm or a downpour,
00:32:25I'm walking over the tyre wall exactly right.
00:32:28Yeah, I think 5 metres normally, but force majeure, of course.
00:32:31And there's the Dempsey car.
00:32:33That's a pro-speed Porsche.
00:32:34The Dempsey car is still running.
00:32:36Yeah, we just saw Dempsey pits.
00:32:38A quick mention before we get back to business.
00:32:40Roxy is listening.
00:32:41She's my 4-year-old granddaughter.
00:32:42So, Roxy, hi from Grand Pops at Le Mans and enjoy the rest of the race.
00:32:46And I can't believe she texted me.
00:32:48How's that?
00:32:49Excellent.
00:32:49Inside the final hour at Le Mans and even less in the know of what might happen.
00:32:58Let's have a listen.
00:32:58OK, Tom, just to give you an update, there's one hour remaining.
00:33:01One hour remaining.
00:33:03Car 8 is in the same safety car as us, but they are one lap down behind you.
00:33:08One lap down.
00:33:09Same safety car.
00:33:10Well, there's all sorts of possibilities for emotional stories.
00:33:19Slightly bit trackled, Liz Halliday has just come back in from the pit lane.
00:33:22Not a pleasant place.
00:33:23Flicking water around.
00:33:25Not a pleasant place to be.
00:33:26Remember, just as the storm really hit, the team got on the radio to Sebastian Burme.
00:33:31He said, take it easy.
00:33:33Take it easy.
00:33:34I.e., keep the car on the track.
00:33:38You can't win it if you're in the tyre wall, as Nico Lapierre proved.
00:33:43Joe Foster and Patrick Dempsey, watch on.
00:33:45Their 77 car is still in contention in the AM class.
00:33:50Fourth place.
00:33:51Trying to figure out where the pro class cars are.
00:33:58Which safety car queues the two Porsches and the Aston Martin are in.
00:34:03We might need the director's help for this.
00:34:05I'll tell you what, I mean, virtually everybody is behind the safety car C, which is just coming
00:34:11into Mulsanne corner now.
00:34:12There's hardly any cars behind the other two.
00:34:15In which case, pull them out of the way and let's get them all together.
00:34:18Well, you know, that's not a bad way of dealing with either, is it?
00:34:21Unfortunately.
00:34:22Oh, 92 has just broken free from safety car A, down the Mulsanne straight, rushing towards
00:34:29the chicane.
00:34:31And that is Richard Leitz out of the pits.
00:34:35Now, how is it that he's gone by on our little indicator of who's where?
00:34:40Gone by safety car A?
00:34:41Or is the computer just playing games with us as it occasionally does?
00:34:45I think it may be playing games with us.
00:34:46I can't imagine something.
00:34:47Richard Leitz's experience is not going to pass a safety car under any conditions.
00:34:53It is a bit slow, the timing screen and getting itself right.
00:34:56It keeps showing us there's a lap difference and then suddenly you find, no, it's not.
00:34:59It's only nine seconds.
00:35:00Well, that's only when they come past the timing lines.
00:35:03Or, yeah, on the sectors.
00:35:04So, the deal is, the Aston can't make it on fuel.
00:35:12To what?
00:35:12The Aston can't make it on fuel unless this safety car goes on for maybe another 10 or 15 minutes.
00:35:18The lead Porsche definitely can't make it on fuel unless this goes on for another 10 or 15 minutes.
00:35:25And the second place Porsche might be a bit of a question mark as well.
00:35:32So, we might yet have another pit call to throw into this for fuel and or tyres.
00:35:38It's not going to get any simpler.
00:35:39It's not going to get any simpler.
00:36:09It's not going to get any simpler.
00:36:39It's not going to get any simpler.
00:36:40It's not going to get any simpler.
00:36:41It's not going to get any simpler.
00:36:42And now, it's been great.
00:36:44It's also a good one.
00:36:44So, the WrestleMania is going to be a 55th 4.
00:36:45It's not going to get any more longer.
00:36:47So, it's a good one.
00:36:49It's the 90th anniversary of your self, you're great.
00:36:54We are in the last race.
00:36:59After having to get back to the different categories,
00:37:04we have 44 players who are still here.
00:37:10We are in the last race.
00:37:17We are in the last race.
00:37:20We are in the last race.
00:37:25We are in the last race.
00:37:41We are in the last race.
00:37:46We are in the last race.
00:37:51We are in the last race.
00:38:09Welcome back to the final hour of a tortuous 24 hours of Le Mans 2013.
00:38:16And again, the weather has, Mark Cole, put just an enormous pressure on the teams
00:38:24and thrown a huge spanner in everybody's works.
00:38:27Yeah, they've been working on strategy all afternoon, getting everything ready for this final hour,
00:38:31and then bang, the weather gods decide they're going to take over from the strategists.
00:38:37And this is what happens.
00:38:39Look at the mess.
00:38:40If you're just joining us, we've had a number of offs.
00:38:43Most notably, the number seven Toyota, which has made its way back to the pits.
00:38:51It has.
00:38:52It's been in 17, 18 minutes now.
00:38:54No, but it's still there.
00:38:55And this is going to move Benoit Trullier and Johnny Kane in this track at HPD.
00:38:59Not for a while.
00:39:00No.
00:39:01They're five laps behind.
00:39:02It will if the Toyota doesn't leave, but they are working on it very hard indeed.
00:39:08Yeah.
00:39:09And five laps at sort of seven minutes a lap, which is what they're doing under the, behind
00:39:14the safety car, that's 35 minutes.
00:39:16Gets us halfway to the checker.
00:39:17Yeah.
00:39:18Plus.
00:39:19Yeah.
00:39:20Two thirds of the way to the checker.
00:39:21We've got 50 minutes remaining.
00:39:24Wow.
00:39:25I mean, you know, right from the beginning of this race where we had what we expected was
00:39:31Audi's running away from the Toyota's rabbit versus hare.
00:39:35Toyota all over the back of the alley.
00:39:37We're fighting them to lead.
00:39:38We're taking the lead of the race against everything we expected.
00:39:41And right from the beginning, it seems to the very end of this race, we are going to
00:39:46have more twists and turns.
00:39:48Past us now goes the 92 Porsche, our GTE Pro leader.
00:39:53Right.
00:39:54Richard Leeds has changed onto wet tires.
00:39:56So now all the front runners, pretty much the entire field are on wet weather tires,
00:40:00except the Aston Martin, which is on slicks.
00:40:02Yeah.
00:40:03And in a different safety car queue.
00:40:04Yeah.
00:40:05I think it's two safety cars behind, unfortunately.
00:40:08So, yeah.
00:40:09On the whole side or?
00:40:10No, I think it's probably going through the, coming up to the four assessors now,
00:40:13because it's shown as, what's the time differential?
00:40:16Four minutes odd, wasn't it?
00:40:17Well, he's completed sector one, which means he is on the Mulsanne.
00:40:21So he's behind.
00:40:22So they're half a lap apart, not half a second apart.
00:40:25There we are.
00:40:26That's the one coming down into the second chitone.
00:40:29Yeah.
00:40:30That's the safety car B queue.
00:40:31And there are A, B and C safety cars.
00:40:34Safety car B will pull off at Arnage.
00:40:37So that's where the Aston will be released.
00:40:39And our leader is in safety car A, which will pull off at the exit of the pit.
00:40:45The exit of the pit lane.
00:40:46So, yeah.
00:40:47That's going to be, or the 40k, the beginning of the pit lane.
00:40:51That's a long distance.
00:40:53Yeah.
00:40:54That's a couple of miles.
00:40:55Another train coming past us now.
00:40:57I'm looking at the number 12 rebellion coupe as Mark and Jeremy squint out the window to try and figure out where the third place GTE Pro car is as well.
00:41:08Yeah.
00:41:09Because that Porsche might come in.
00:41:10They're together.
00:41:11I think the second and third place cars are together on the GTE Pro.
00:41:15Could be.
00:41:16And that was one safety car behind the leader in GTE Pro.
00:41:20They weren't there.
00:41:21So, yeah.
00:41:22They are indeed, you know, two thirds of a lap down.
00:41:25Seeing a race leader there coming down into and out of shot.
00:41:29This is the 91 car.
00:41:30Let's listen.
00:41:31The track is getting dry pretty quickly.
00:41:34Yeah.
00:41:35We're waiting for the next shower in 10 minutes.
00:41:38Copy.
00:41:39But I just have to take care about the tire on the drive path just to be sure we can finish this.
00:41:46Copy.
00:41:47We're waiting for the rain shower in 10 minutes.
00:41:50Yeah, look at the roll.
00:41:53Of course, Manti Porsche.
00:41:54I don't want to be a strategist now.
00:41:55Manti Porsche bringing Porsche as a factory back to Le Mans for the first time in 14 years.
00:41:59Did all their testing on these cars at the Nordschleife.
00:42:03And does it ever rain at the Nordschleife?
00:42:05No, never.
00:42:06No.
00:42:07Or anything.
00:42:08Never mind being a strategist.
00:42:10They've only got to worry about two cars.
00:42:12We've got to figure out who's wearing four glasses.
00:42:15We've got 30, 40 cars still running.
00:42:17We're going to try and jiggery-pokery around and second guess.
00:42:20How about then?
00:42:21Yeah, about an hour and a half ago, I was in the pit lane and I chatted to Olaf Manti and I said,
00:42:26would you mind coming on air with me?
00:42:29I was on the regular more on that stage and he said,
00:42:32I'd love to, but no, if you don't mind, I'm too nervous.
00:42:36So I thought, hey, look, you've done a really, really good job.
00:42:39I'll give you that by now and I'll just pass on your thoughts.
00:42:42But yeah, he was biting his nails down there.
00:42:44That was then.
00:42:45And this is a lot more, there's a lot more at stake now or it's even, you know,
00:42:48it's even more precariously balanced.
00:42:50Well, they are now one, two in that GTE Pro class.
00:42:54And in the AM class, Jean-Karl Vernet still in front of two Ferraris
00:42:59and then the Dempsey Racing Porsche, which is in fourth position.
00:43:03So actually Porsche looking really as though the cars may have fallen.
00:43:09But it's still 45 minutes.
00:43:11It is 45 minutes again.
00:43:12We still can't say that.
00:43:13There's these spots of rain because, you know, you could sort of sort of the last few pictures.
00:43:17It seemed to be very dry, very little spray coming up from the cars here.
00:43:20It's relatively dry down here where we are at the Porsche Cayenne.
00:43:25And as you say, it's still 46 minutes to go.
00:43:27We've not yet got the signal that we're going to go back to green.
00:43:30But hey, look at that. There you go.
00:43:32This is the Porsche Cayenne.
00:43:33The one place you want it to be dry.
00:43:36Yeah, exactly.
00:43:37And the last to dry because it's much newer tarmac.
00:43:40It's not public road.
00:43:41It's not big grains like a normal road is.
00:43:46Still working on the number seven Toyota, which was five.
00:43:50Will now be four laps ahead of the number one Audi of last year and 2011's winners.
00:43:59Well, they look casual.
00:44:00They look relaxed.
00:44:01Tell you what they're working like.
00:44:03Yeah, it's below the surface, aren't they?
00:44:05Focused and they're organized, aren't they?
00:44:06No question.
00:44:07So running across the ticket, top of your screen is the order at the moment, but without the gaps.
00:44:16The gaps are a lap.
00:44:18First to second.
00:44:19Three and a half minutes.
00:44:20Second to third.
00:44:22A lap to fourth.
00:44:24Two laps.
00:44:25Six laps.
00:44:26Four laps now from Jarvis to Lapierre.
00:44:28Oh, probably, yeah.
00:44:29And Lapierre five laps ahead of Trellway.
00:44:35Liz Halladay and her coffee join us.
00:44:37I think I may have to go and lie down in a dark room in a moment to interrupt Liz in the middle of her pickies so she can have a quick word with us.
00:44:45Right.
00:44:46Commercial break time.
00:44:47Let's all have a deep think and see if we can come up with an answer.
00:44:52Five and four tables.
00:44:53Five and half minutes.
00:44:54Five and half minutes.
00:44:55Five.
00:44:56Five.
00:44:57Five.
00:44:58Five as if it's filled in the water in turn.
00:44:59But after this I travel with Pair
00:45:13Four at levels gewesen.
00:45:15We could go ahead and see how it's going on.
00:45:16To be continued...
00:47:31all i can say just all of a sudden went mental down in the pit lane everyone was freaking out
00:47:37and running around and pouring with rain and you know suddenly there's three or four cars crashing
00:47:43and then porsche's going what's going on we don't know but the aston's just messed up and it's good
00:47:48but we don't know what we're doing and it's just crazy now from what martin told us he believes
00:47:53that the aston came in changed onto wets but then changed back onto slicks and then got held up at
00:47:59the red light in the pit lane exit well i don't know i mean certainly roman dumas thought they
00:48:04changed to wets and then got held up at the pit exit and then they said well they were going to
00:48:09come in because i was in the pit and the whole team was going okay he's coming in he's coming in
00:48:14and then he didn't come in and they went he's coming in but then he didn't come in and roman was going
00:48:19i don't actually know what our car is doing at all i'm just hanging out going what next so it's all a
00:48:25crazy some pieces of the toyota but must collect that'll be expensive ebay material i'll tell you
00:48:30what um but he let's go down the pit lane here from alex brundle who's one of the drivers in the
00:48:38currently second place p2 car the weather is uh changing a lot and it will maybe decide a lot of
00:48:44things at the end of this race yeah as for the whole week really the the weather is is ever changing
00:48:49we've just had a big dump of rain so uh yeah it's going to make the the finish exciting for everyone
00:48:54uh not least olivier who's in our car at the moment it's going to take a lot for us uh to catch the to
00:49:00catch the sister car now in front of us uh we're about two minutes behind with with 45 minutes of the
00:49:06race to go um but you know anything's possible and they just had a spin under the safety car actually
00:49:11so um you know a little bit maybe of uh a little bit of an opportunity to uh to push for the win
00:49:18the team overall did a very very good race uh how do you manage to be in a strong competition with
00:49:24your sister car yeah i mean it's uh we had to split split the garages halfway through the race because
00:49:30uh obviously you know both both teams want to win and both teams have a different opinion about who
00:49:35should uh who should be in in front at the end of the race so uh we have our own separate engineers
00:49:41and and do our own separate thing for sure uh through practice and qualifying we share data but
00:49:46when we go racing we race each other and there's no team orders here thank you
00:49:50so young uh alex bundle from kingslin and of course first leman last year finished 15th overall
00:49:58eighth in lmp2 driving in the zytec greaves now made the switch to jacques nicolais morgan nissan
00:50:05team but a great future ahead of this young man as a number of young drivers we've seen in this
00:50:09race and the standout surely has been uh jan marden bruchless and he's currently on board right now
00:50:15running in fourth place in the lmp2 category and 10th overall really a fantastic race from him and i
00:50:20was watching his times from pit lane as well and wow is all i can say i'm i'm overly impressed and
00:50:26i'm definitely he's my driver for this race if we were going to pick the eurosport driver
00:50:30of the race he's he's my pick i'm afraid my pick is the aston martin group to be perfectly honest
00:50:37all all the aston martin drivers would be my pick but i mean there's there's a bunch of deserving um
00:50:42candidates here
00:50:44there's the number eight car number seven car i should say they're putting putting wheels back on
00:50:52yeah bolting your new nose on the car putting the wheels on as well so looks like that car will be able
00:50:56to get back out again it's currently shown us four laps behind i'll shoot soon change to three laps
00:51:01only ahead i should say of benoit trillier in the number one car
00:51:08on board the 73 chevrolet corvette this is uh jordan taylor his father wayne taylor made 13 starts
00:51:15here and he as well as winning the daytona 24 hours outright and uh liz number seven car back in pit lane
00:51:22what a speedy fix that was i was down there in pit lane uh just before i came up i thought i'd have
00:51:27a little look at the car and the whole front of the car was off basically um when there was a mass
00:51:34of people there was hoovering out gravel by some guy and everybody else was just thrown on top of
00:51:38this car that's an incredible fix in such a short space of time for all that damage but as quick as
00:51:43that was they're going to get held at the end of the pit lane of course until uh the next safety car
00:51:47train's gone by and this must be so frustrating to a driver oh yeah it's horrible and it's difficult
00:51:54here at le mans with the three safety cars salt he stalled it he got the green but he didn't go
00:51:59now he's now he's got it right oh that was close yeah he will he'll easily catch the train obviously
00:52:05yes they are under safety car but a lot of pressure on these teams everybody is so stressed i was down
00:52:12in the audi carriage and i spoke to brad kettler who's uh helping engineer the number two car and
00:52:18he said i'm just so stressed i'm just so tense i can't even sit still they're just they're very
00:52:23very nervous down there understandably so so nick lapier getting back up to speed as quickly as he can
00:52:30still got cycles of pit stops to get through haven't we even in the last uh yeah 40 minutes well talk
00:52:35about bringing up to speed just for anybody who's tuned in for the last hour of le mans we are under
00:52:40safety car because of rain not a bit of rain a very large amount of rain dumped very quickly on the
00:52:47circuit de la sarte left uh cars flying off the track everywhere and the race director eduardo freitas
00:52:54with no option but to scramble the safety car for the 12th time no 10th time 10th time aco telling us
00:53:0210th we thought it was 11th but i think what happened the safety car was about to come in when someone else
00:53:07crashed and we counted that as two safety cars but whatever as martin told us earlier they've now
00:53:12broken the record which was four minutes 53 they're now well over four hours 53 minutes five hours and uh
00:53:21how crazy is that so it's at the moment we're talking about the 19 hours of le mans yeah
00:53:38safety car remains out at le mans we see no barrier repairs we so see no damaged cars in
00:53:43dangerous places all cars have changed onto wet weather tires stroke had the opportunity to
00:53:49change onto wet weather tires cars are in line behind the safety car have been for five minutes
00:53:5510 minutes maybe more safety cars remain out and i have to say i'm completely at the loss as to why
00:54:03liz halliday from the driver's seat any clues i mean there are a couple of wet patches but it
00:54:11it looked like what we just passed could that have been some barrier damage maybe not
00:54:15it doesn't make sense to me at the moment i know we did have quite a few accidents although once the
00:54:20toyota went off safety cars will withdraw at the end of this lap oh there's our answer from race
00:54:27director edward afraid us yeah safety cars withdrawing at the end of this lap so that answers the questions
00:54:34that everybody's asking on twitter and that we ourselves were asking uh that safety car is now
00:54:39going i'm guessing they just took their time to make sure all the debris was gone as there were about
00:54:42three different accidents all at once on the circuit but we will go live racing here with a mixture of
00:54:50cars on wet tires cars on slick tires and a mostly wet circuit so oh god i hope they can keep it clean
00:54:56we're so close to the end we're going to have a very quick interview from the pit lane let's hope it is
00:55:01very quick we've got a lot of racing to get in in 34 minutes and 57 seconds
00:55:31what's it like in the team yeah the storm has uh really raised our rates nico got caught out
00:55:47completely he had a big crash a car almost completely destroyed to see him bring it back was just
00:55:55astonishing still shocked like everybody else here and then we were fighting against the clock
00:56:07obviously to try and get the car fixed our goal was to get both cars to the finish when we started
00:56:12yesterday and now we're hoping to try and get that done when nico got out of the car you managed to get him
00:56:22motivated to keep the car running sorry trying to listen to the toyota radio as well they said
00:56:49nico was very shocked by the crash and uh it took a while for him to just gather his thoughts and
00:56:54bring the car back but it's been a great story for the team we said we try and get both cars to the
00:57:00end and even though uh we're looking like we might take a silver medal for us that would still be a
00:57:06fantastic result there's still 30 minutes still to go so the rs4 safety car still leading the field round
00:57:12the lights haven't yet gone out uh having told us quite categorically they're coming in this lap oh i don't
00:57:18know really what's up in here dive right across the grass at the last moment but you're right
00:57:23it depends where the safety cars started from this is safety car c which goes back at the gap between
00:57:30the first and second chicanes on the mulsanne straight they go back to where they started from
00:57:35so these guys have got half a lap to get up to speed of course their teams now on the pit wall as
00:57:41their safety car goes by they have to spotted safety car c and then radio to their guys the information
00:57:47i've just given you that they will be released between the two chicanes and certainly the teams
00:57:54would be telling their drivers when it's green they'll be shouting green green green as soon as
00:57:58it is so that they know because it is very difficult when these safety cars go
00:58:02in all these different locations you're mixed in with a bunch of different cars
00:58:07mixed conditions right now oh my god i mean the restart could be an absolute disaster
00:58:11i really hope it won't be lights are off lights are off it's coming in not yet he's got to pull in
00:58:16and the 97 aston martin another roll of the dice there on pit road darren turner is uh is it darren
00:58:22turner stefan mucker has decided he's not like the slicks anymore he's getting wet are they going to
00:58:27fill him to the end does he need more fuel i expect he probably has taken some well it won't give him any
00:58:33more than he needs though liz ice and no definitely not and i suspect the gamble there is that he feels
00:58:39it's wet enough that he can make up more time than the porsche can on its tires is it has it pitted for
00:58:45wets it hasn't has it both porsches have pitted for wets i have now okay right so he basically would
00:58:51then lose a load of time if he wasn't on the wets but he will okay but willie look at this where's the
00:58:57spray from the safety car it's doing 130 kilometers an hour that's barely 70 miles an hour very very
00:59:03wet where it was wet though and i think and don't forget we've been warned more rain is coming yeah
00:59:09it's very dry it is quite warm still it's a big gamble it's all a big gap the whole thing the whole
00:59:15kit and boot caboodle is a 30-minute lottery for every position in every class and then it comes down
00:59:19to what sort of wets are they on are they very soft if they're very soft wets they could completely
00:59:23destroy them on half of a lap on the dry however if the compound's a little bit harder they would
00:59:28just last that bit longer and then cool off on the wet portions mark yeah and look how you can see
00:59:33it's totally dry here now in fact we heard sebastian braney on the radio a few minutes ago saying he was
00:59:38surprised how quickly it was drying out but that's only on certain parts of the circuit we've got other
00:59:43parts like this but it's still absolutely drenched huge amounts of spray here if you just came tuned in
00:59:48and looked at that you'd think the whole circuit was wet wouldn't you and that is what makes them all so
00:59:52unique it's a very very big circuit we're away green flag let's see what happens
