00:00:00The garage doors down on the 95 Aston Martin, just about nine minutes into the race in the first couple of laps.
00:00:08Alan Simonson driving that car at a tremendously high-speed accident at Terre du Rouge.
00:00:14And despite all the efforts of medical staff who are on the scene very quickly indeed, unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries.
00:00:21The first fatality here at Le Mans since Joe Gartner back in 1987.
00:00:26Doesn't make it any easier on Alan's wife and baby daughter, all the rest of his family and friends, least of all his team and teammates.
00:00:35But our greatest sympathies go to all of them.
00:00:39It is occasionally a very, very tough sport.
00:00:56Well, if it weren't for the corner workers, for the marshals, for the medical crews, all of whom are volunteers, this sport wouldn't continue.
00:01:05And if it weren't for tank tape, Jeremy, 75% of all racing cars would not have finished 75% of all the races they've finished.
00:01:13It is the engineers.
00:01:14After a five-pound club hammer, the engineers' best friend.
00:01:17Yeah, indeed.
00:01:17And look at the front shot of that number 53 SRT Viper in the pit lane.
00:01:22They look like the epic air horns there on the hood.
00:01:26They weren't air horns, actually.
00:01:27That should be.
00:01:28That'd be cool.
00:01:29The air restrictors through which the air flows before it gets to the engine.
00:01:33So if you thought there were air horns, sorry to disappoint you.
00:01:36However, I think we should consider that for the other sport.
00:01:39Coffee light, box this time.
00:01:41Box this time.
00:01:43Fuel light on, box this time for the number two Audi of Neuropa.
00:01:47Yeah, we should have horns on the cars that go Aruga.
00:01:50Yeah, and forget flashing lights.
00:01:52Who needs that if you've got two air horns built in?
00:01:55They've got a nice air freshener there on the board as well.
00:01:59Yeah.
00:02:00Oh, jeez.
00:02:01Oh, my goodness.
00:02:01I've just been attacked by the TV screen.
00:02:03Page one of the timing screen has just attacked Liz.
00:02:05Wow.
00:02:06I'm going to have to gaffer it back up.
00:02:08So talk amongst yourselves, ladies.
00:02:09That was exciting.
00:02:10See, gaffer tape, if it wasn't for gaffer tape, 75% of our commentary booths wouldn't be held together either.
00:02:18So that's just filled all of you with confidence that you've just seen the number 53 Viper gaffer tape to bits,
00:02:23and our bit of gaffer tape on only a TV screen has just failed.
00:02:27That's encouraging, isn't it?
00:02:28So only 10 laps then, this stint, for Loicke Duval.
00:02:34Yeah, 10 laps is not much at all, and they must be pitted.
00:02:37I think they're pitting normally.
00:02:39They've been doing 11 laps generally on their stints.
00:02:41But was that when it was a bit more damp?
00:02:43No.
00:02:43Because now we're fully dry.
00:02:44They may not quite make it.
00:02:46It's a long lap around Le Mans.
00:02:47Yeah, yeah.
00:02:49Conceivably, they're certainly going a little bit quicker now, and that's apparently the difference.
00:02:53He was able to radio into the team that the fuel light came on,
00:02:56and so immediately instructed to bring that car onto pit lane for regular service.
00:03:02And actually, the team probably even knew that he needed to pit.
00:03:04There's so much technology now in pit lane that I'm sure they were able to say,
00:03:08look, we're not going to make it for a full lap.
00:03:10We're going to have to pit in now.
00:03:11So that's certainly going to make things more exciting as this race goes on.
00:03:16We're going to go to a quick commercial break.
00:03:18Stay with us here at the Le Mans 24 Hours on Eurosport.
00:03:21We're going to have to go to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
00:03:25We're going to have to go to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
00:03:27We're going to have to go to the Le Mans 24 Hours.

00:03:34We're going to have to go to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
00:03:36We're going to have to go to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
00:03:37We're going to have to go to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
00:08:38Ah, he's been shown as red, which shows he's behind the barriers.
00:08:42Red, the background to their numbers shows as stopped.
00:08:46But they might be pulling him out, but they might be pulling him out, though.
00:08:49It looks like he just went off.
00:08:49Yes, they pulled him out, because he was in a dangerous position, and again, he might be having
00:08:54to get the Hoover out of his own ground, so he's going to get the Hoover out of his own ground.
00:08:59He's a Hoover, a Hoover, a Hoover, a Hoover, a Hoover, a Hoover, a Hoover, a Hooverer.
00:09:00Meanwhile, a Hooverer.
00:09:01Meanwhile, 51.
00:09:02This is the lead car.
00:09:04This is last year's, two-thirds of last year's winning team for AF Corsa in the GTE Pro class.
00:09:09Coming back out of the garage.
00:09:11Notice, down the driver's right of the windscreen, a long strip of LED lights, different colour
00:09:17for each of their cars.
00:09:18Get it up, get it up, get it down, get it down.
00:09:20And out goes the 51 car.
00:09:24Made a lot more noise than movement there, just for a moment, so that'll smell nicely
00:09:27of clutch any moment now.
00:09:29Yes, a lengthy stop there.
00:09:32And they are now down in...
00:09:34No words, Bill at all, yeah.
00:09:36...I think it is, in GT, and that would be a couple of laps behind the leading Aston Martins
00:09:43of Fred McEvecki in colour number 99, and then number 97 of Stefan Mooker.
00:09:48And do we know why that car dropped down the order?
00:09:51No.
00:09:52No.
00:09:53Unfortunately.
00:09:54I'll tell you something, though.
00:09:55It's now got Giancarlo Fisichella in it, and Jonathan Bomarito in the Viper is the next
00:10:00car behind him on the road, so I want to see that battle shape up.
00:10:04I want to see Bomarito, first-time boy, against the Formula 1, Honda, Ferrari, last year's
00:10:09winner, yeah.
00:10:10I want to see that battle.
00:10:10I'm pretty sure who's going to win.
00:10:12No downfall on Bomarito, but I would definitely put my money on Fisichella.
00:10:17Olly Jarvis back in.
00:10:18Now, remember we heard Toyota, Calvin Fish there, calling it for speed in the background,
00:10:23steps well out of the way, and wisely so.
00:10:25Remember how we heard Toyota telling their driver he would be exiting the pits right in
00:10:29front?
00:10:30How right...
00:10:31Ooh!
00:10:32Is that Toyota going through there?
00:10:33No.
00:10:35That's him coming down to the end of the S's and into the 4th chicane.
00:10:39Yeah, that's him coming right in front of us here at the 4th chicane.
00:10:41Now, he's hot.
00:10:42He's on lower fuel, and he's on hot tires.
00:10:45So how far behind?
00:10:4710, 11, 12, 13, quite a long way behind.
00:10:53He's going to have to go some to catch him.
00:10:55Yeah.
00:10:55And he's due a pit stop.
00:10:56It's been a little while yet before Sebastian Buomi brings the number 8 car back onto pit
00:11:00lane.
00:11:00But Oliver Jarvis, interestingly there, was able to do 11 laps on his stint of fuel, whereas
00:11:06the numbers 1 and 2 Audis only did 10 laps on that last stint.
00:11:10And Olly was turning some pretty good laps, wasn't it, Olly Jarvis?
00:11:12Well, Buomi's last lap as well, 329.2.
00:11:15He's got the afterburners lid, hasn't he?
00:11:17He knows he's got a chase.
00:11:19Well, yeah.
00:11:20Toyota in general know they've got a chase because they've made one less pit stop than
00:11:24everybody else, and they're still behind the Audis as well.
00:11:27I think they'll be making it clear to them from the team.
00:11:30They'll be saying what they've got to do at the time, you know.
00:11:32I think when they have a safe position, they'll tell them to just make sure they're safe but
00:11:37still fast, and when they've got to push, they can push.
00:11:39Look at the dive plane shimmy and the mirror shimmy on the Toyota as it touches down.
00:11:44And that's the onboard view as the husband of journalist, of authoress Julia Wurtz, puts
00:11:50his car across the gravel trap.
00:11:51Well, I'm going to have to leave soon and go back to the pits, but before I do, I'm going
00:11:55to give a big up to Michael Crumb because I've been sitting here watching him do fastest
00:11:59lap time after fastest lap time after fastest lap time, and he's just put in another fast
00:12:04sector time, and he's moved up a place since he's been going in the number 42 car.
00:12:08He's now in 17th place overall, but pushing up the order of L and P2, and I just think
00:12:14that's quite impressive.
00:12:15I thought he deserved to mention for that.
00:12:17Well done.
00:12:17He's been charging along very nicely, indeed, as he did as a top two in that class, because
00:12:21they both turned two excellent laps there, 343.1 for David Einemar Hansen.
00:12:27Boy, that's impressive.
00:12:28That's a big lap.
00:12:28I mean, he's only started proper racing last year, really, in the American Le Mans series
00:12:33in the P2 category.
00:12:34Did a couple of years of sort of club racing in Porsche Caymans before that.
00:12:38Did a lot of miles in a radical sports car over in Europe.
00:12:42David Einemar Hansen, he's originally from Denmark, lives now, or is based now in Chicago.
00:12:46He's the developer of the 37 Signals internet technology firm.
00:12:51Very bright guy.
00:12:53Super, super character.
00:12:54He's a tremendous enthusiast for the sport, and boy, a heck of a driver as well.
00:12:59143.1 for David Einemar Hansen.
00:13:01Ruzinov, too.
00:13:02Ruzinov, yeah.
00:13:02In second place, turning almost identical lap times.
00:13:05Off a so, so single-seater career.
00:13:0739.
00:13:07Here we have.
00:13:08That's the...
00:13:08Number 39.
00:13:10DKR one, isn't it?
00:13:11That's had a few trips off already.
00:13:13That's the car with a lot of rookies involved, too, or maybe just finding Le Mans a little
00:13:19bit more challenging than they thought.
00:13:21More hits than Elvis, that one, I'm afraid.
00:13:23And that looks like...
00:13:24Was that Arnaje corner?
00:13:26Yeah.
00:13:26That does bite, Arnaje does.
00:13:28And I think sometimes it's so easy.
00:13:30You heard Alan McNish saying he hates that corner.
00:13:33It's his least favourite.
00:13:34I think that's for most of us, really, because you come in so hot after Indianapolis, and
00:13:38it's a very, very slippery surface.
00:13:40It's so easy to overshoot it and get a little bit too cocky and lock it up.
00:13:43I think that's Roman Brandler's third off in this stint, so he's really...
00:13:48Who did you just say?
00:13:49Roman Brundle?
00:13:50Brandler.
00:13:50Brandler.
00:13:51He stops with the Brundle nonsense.
00:13:53No.
00:13:53I was thinking, who is he creating now?
00:13:56Well, at least I can tell Jeremy Shaw doesn't sound like Jeremy Clarkson.
00:13:59That's true.
00:13:59We'll give you that.
00:14:00We'll give you that.
00:14:00Right.
00:14:00I'm going to go back down to the pits.
00:14:02All right, then.
00:14:02See you boys in a while.
00:14:04Try and behave yourselves.
00:14:05Be careful out there.
00:14:05Thanks, Liz.
00:14:06I will.
00:14:07Yeah, Roman Bradley, he's one of the few drivers I can find nothing about, actually.
00:14:11I think he did some Ferrari challenge racing, perhaps, but certainly not a name that's particularly
00:14:16well known.
00:14:17Certainly challenged by the LMP car that he's driving at the moment.
00:14:20But, I mean, again, you know, especially for rookies.
00:14:2341 rookies, incidentally, in the field of 65 cars is an enormous number.
00:14:28I don't know.
00:14:29It's about average, to be honest.
00:14:31So, it's been, I think we had 42 last year and 40 the year before.
00:14:34Well, in which case, what are we doing with them all?
00:14:36Well.
00:14:37Where do they all go to?
00:14:38It's on the bucket.
00:14:39Le Mans 24-Hour is on the people's bucket list.
00:14:42This is what they want to do.
00:14:43It's mainly the gentlemen that come and go.
00:14:45I was talking to Tommy Kendall about it.
00:14:47He said he did a race about five, six years ago, and it was a sort of undercover, you know,
00:14:53go out and find out what it's like thing when SRT were looking at coming back to racing.
00:14:57And his previous one was in the 90s.
00:15:00So, he said, this is my first time.
00:15:02Again, third first-time race, effectively.
00:15:05He said, everything I knew the previous two times, it just doesn't count.
00:15:09I don't know it anymore.
00:15:10So, he's having another first-time race.
00:15:12But, yeah, Roman Brandler having a torrid time.
00:15:16One of two rookies in that car.
00:15:18Stéphane Raffin is the other one in that 39 car.
00:15:21Yeah.
00:15:21And Olivier Porter, the third driver.
00:15:23But he's made a couple of starts here, but ten years ago, 2003 and 2004 in WMs.
00:15:30So, he's...
00:15:33So, not actually real racing cars at all, then.
00:15:36Listen, the 50...
00:15:37I know, harsh.
00:15:38There's another part of the country I can't go to.
00:15:40So, the 51 car that we just saw coming out after a long pit stop that, well, what was hoped to be lead AF Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia.
00:15:51It's just been warned to sort out its headlights.
00:15:53You must have lights on front and rear at every moment in this race, not just during official darkness hours at all times, as you can see clearly.
00:16:03And it's because these unguided...
00:16:05Well, these guided missiles, like the prototypes here, coming up behind everybody else, it's to just alert the driver to the fact that there is something coming, whistling up behind.
00:16:15Well, a man who was on pole position in the LMP2 class is down in the pits.
00:16:20Let's hear from Olivier Pla.
00:16:21With some dry truck, rainy truck, how tricky are the conditions out there?
00:16:29Could you tell us the feedback from the guys?
00:16:32Well, when I was in the car earlier, in the afternoon, it was a really tricky condition.
00:16:39There was a few showers in a different place of the truck, so it was really hard to manage and, well, especially to keep in the truck.
00:16:49But, yeah, I decided to keep in the... to keep the sick tires.
00:16:54And I think, finally, it was a good choice because I could pull away a little bit.
00:17:00But we are still a long way to go, so everything is still possible.
00:17:05Yeah, but you have a very good position. And I think the guys are preparing for a pit stop.
00:17:10What are you thinking about? They will change the tires?
00:17:15Well, no, David is just... he's on his first since, so he's gonna... he's gonna be only refueling.
00:17:22OK, and what about your opposition?
00:17:26Well, I think, you know, at the moment, it's a very close fight, you know, so a lot of cars are very close and so we have to keep going like that and we will see later.
00:17:39Yeah. Thank you.
00:17:41Oh, dear, problems getting the G-Drive car going again. There we go, that's the number 25, not the one of Roman Rusinov, which is in second place, but the car that is in, ooh, umpteenth in the LMP2 class.
00:17:54Yes, ah! Now, here is our orange moment, the 60-year-old orange that was in the winning car in Le Mans in 1953 with Duncan Hamilton in the C-Type Jaguar Curiacos car.
00:18:06Jaguar's first win at Le Mans, scored by a Curiacos and Duncan Hamilton in 1953.
00:18:12And an orange that was in the car with him, which went in every other race he ever raced in, has been handed on down to his grandson.
00:18:19Adrian Hamilton handed it on, who was Duncan's son, to Archie Hamilton, who is making his first appearance here at Le Mans.
00:18:27So there's a 60-year-old link between the winning car and the winning driver, not just in name, Jeremy, but in a petrified little black orange in the driver's pocket.
00:18:37Yeah, it's a great story that, isn't it? Archie Hamilton just taking over that number 25 car, lost a couple of laps early, very early in the race, during the initial safety car period.
00:18:47They had a gear shift problem on that car, they were able to get that fixed.
00:18:51The good news for them, it was under caution, so they only lost two laps, which is pretty remarkable.
00:18:56And that car since then has been charging along. Archie Hamilton sharing that number 25 car with Tor Graves, who had a crash this morning in the warm-up, and Cinchy Nakano.
00:19:05Yeah, it was Tor who parked it backwards in the barriers, and that seems to have had a little bit of a knock-on legacy, but hopefully Alan Docking has given it a very stiff talking to, and it is a little bit tremulous of coming back into the garage for too long.
00:19:18So our race still being led by Audi's Benoit Trellier in the number one car, Audi number two, Lloyd Duval second, Audi number three, Oli Jarvis, lies in third.
00:19:28Oli Jarvis, lies in third.
00:19:29Oli Jarvis, lies in third.
00:19:30Oli Jarvis, lies in third.
00:19:35we're on because of their race and in third.
00:19:38Oli Jarvis, lies in third.
00:19:40That's a localidan and side-wing, won't be in third.
00:19:41The car is in fourth.
00:19:42No one to play a nice charge on the road, up to the drive in the right to Nosso, in third.
00:19:45The car is not yet.
00:19:46it's impossible for a stop.
00:19:49We've kindly got to getanie H scoored, late lady's dead!
00:19:53To be mindful of it, and that's a good time.
00:19:56The car is the only private Jesuit, lying in third.
00:20:01Now the car is to happen during the cafe,
00:20:04What's up there?
00:20:06It's normal.
00:20:08It's normal.
00:20:10It's normal.
00:20:12It's normal.
00:20:34...
00:20:46...
00:20:52...
00:20:56...
00:20:58Here we go.
00:21:28So, let's go.
00:21:58Welcome back to the Le Mans 24 Hours, live on Eurosport.
00:22:04Wherever you're watching around the world, welcome to our coverage of the 90th anniversary race here at Le Mans.
00:22:11The 81st race and another spin for the DKR engineering car.
00:22:17That is now the fourth for Romain Brandelat in this stint.
00:22:20I really think he ought to go and get either the brakes or the tyres looked at, Jeremy Shaw,
00:22:24because something's not going right with him there.
00:22:26Maybe that's another stat I need to start checking out.
00:22:31He's got a rival actually in Rodeo New Nessie, I'm afraid.
00:22:34Looking here at the battle between Frankie Cheng and Johnny Kane,
00:22:38and this position has swapped and changed left and right.
00:22:42Look at the front of both of these cars.
00:22:44In fact, most of these cars, as they come towards you,
00:22:46you'll see some of the prototypes with bright lights around the air intakes or other parts of the car.
00:22:51You'll see lights in the windscreen strips of some of the closed cars.
00:22:55And a lot of people have said, you know, what's that all about?
00:22:57Well, for multi-car teams, it's often used to identify which of your cars is coming either past the pits at night or down pit road at night.
00:23:06And for single teams like Strakas there, they use a different shape of light pattern to anyone else's open car
00:23:14to try and make sure that they can instantly identify their own car, either on a TV monitor picture or as it comes towards them.
00:23:21The idea is just for identification in murky and or dark conditions.
00:23:26So that's what those are all about.
00:23:28And it's a legacy from many years ago when cars were much harder to identify even than they are now.
00:23:35A little dive by under braking from Johnny Kane.
00:23:39Good move there from the Ulstermen.
00:23:42And we've been joined by another man from the Emerald Isle.
00:23:46Damon Faulkner has meandered into the booth.
00:23:48You never know.
00:23:49We might even press him to use a microphone in a moment or two.
00:23:51So Toyota's still chasing Audi after four, oh, 19, five hours now.
00:23:58We're into the fifth hour of the race.
00:23:59Excellent.
00:24:00Five hours down.
00:24:00Only 19 still to go in six minutes.
00:24:03For those of you, and again, another replay.
00:24:05They like this replay of the number seven car.
00:24:06See how much height he can get.
00:24:08Now, what they need is a rallying style thing to go and measure how much height there is.
00:24:13Look at the flex in the rear body.
00:24:15That's not suspension movement.
00:24:16That is rear body flex.
00:24:18It's incredible, isn't it?
00:24:19Yeah.
00:24:19Fantastic pictures.
00:24:21Absolutely fantastic.
00:24:21Look at the illuminated lights on the side of this car.
00:24:24Blue means we're looking at a car in the LMP2 class.
00:24:27One light means you're the leader.
00:24:29Two lights means you're second.
00:24:31Three lights means you're third.
00:24:32And that's something that was developed by Don Paynos and the guys in the American Le Mans series.
00:24:35So at a glance, instantly, you can see if a car going by, it's in the top three of its class.
00:24:40And I still think it's just a really great little addition.
00:24:44And, you know, somebody came up with this bright idea and everybody slapped their forehead and went,
00:24:48oh, how have we never thought of that before?
00:24:50Yeah, it is a great system.
00:24:52And it's unfortunately slipped away, actually, in the LMS the last couple of years.
00:24:56But I was told recently that it will be back fairly soon, and that'll be a great addition, I think, for, once again, for the American Le Mans series groundbreakers there.
00:25:03But it'll be good to see that system back in use.
00:25:06Let me look at the note here.
00:25:08There's a release came out just now from Aston Martin to say they will continue in the 24 hours of Le Mans.
00:25:14You know, when there's an awful instance such as we had earlier today with the loss of life of Alan Sermonson,
00:25:19and, you know, some people always say, well, you know, why are you carrying on in a race?
00:25:23How can you carry on in those sort of conditions?
00:25:24But I think this might explain it for you.
00:25:27It's, you know, if you're not involved in motor racing all the time, then it might be difficult.
00:25:30But for those who are involved in motor racing, they will understand.
00:25:32And here's what the statement read.
00:25:34Following the ACOs, that's the Autumn Rebuild Club de l'Ouest, the organising body here at the 24 hours of Le Mans,
00:25:41after their immediate statement concerning the tragic death of Aston Martin racing driver Alan Sermonson,
00:25:45and at the specific request of his family, the team will continue to participate in the 24 hours of Le Mans in tribute to Alan.
00:25:56And I understand as well, there are very mixed emotions on this,
00:26:00and some people say, well, the team must pull out, surely, because, you know, just as a mark of respect.
00:26:06And there's other people as well, you know, certainly fans on Twitter, saying,
00:26:10come on, Aston, go and win this for Alan.
00:26:12And Damien, you raced with him, you raced against him in Formula Palmer Audi, you know,
00:26:17when you were both in junior single-seaters, and he was an enormously gifted driver in anything he turned his hand to.
00:26:25And, you know, for the people that know him, it's a really tough decision to make.
00:26:29Yeah, you just have to look at all the comments on Twitter to know the following,
00:26:35to realise the following that he had.
00:26:37Alan was a, yeah, very gifted driver, and someone that I raced against,
00:26:41I think, probably in the year 2000, I think, in Formula Palmer Audi.
00:26:47But, and again, more recently at Daytona.
00:26:51But, yeah, and I've just been speaking to some of his colleagues up there,
00:26:55and, you know, they're distraught and it's difficult to carry on.
00:26:58And, you know, there's, you know, a lot of sadness and a lot of emotions are running high, you know.
00:27:04But, you know, it's, you know what, it would be a fitting tribute, wouldn't it, for them to win this class this weekend.
00:27:13Yeah, exactly.
00:27:13And nobody's going to be jubilant on the podium if they manage to get there,
00:27:17but they will feel that they at least have honoured a colleague and friend.
00:27:21The track is not very dry, it's not very wet, it's always a mix.
00:27:26How are things going on for you?
00:27:28I mean, yeah, it's complicated, but I think now the weather is more or less supposed to stay dry.
00:27:33We had a really good start to the race.
00:27:36Unfortunately, we had a small contact, but it didn't cost us too much time, about two minutes.
00:27:41So now we're back on track, we're leading our category, so it's okay.
00:27:45It could have been better, but we're still leading.
00:27:48The battle between the Toyotas and Audi is very, very strong.
00:27:52What is your expectation just behind?
00:27:54Well, I mean, our goal is to win the category of LMP1 privateer.
00:28:00So that's our main goal.
00:28:01And then we have to wait on the others and see what they do.
00:28:04Maybe in the scratch finish we can finish on the podium.
00:28:08But the others have to make mistakes for us to do that.
00:28:11We know we can't fight them on the track.
00:28:13For you, what is the plan now?
00:28:15For me, I think Neil will do another two stints, and then I will get in and start the night.
00:28:20And we'll try to do quadruple stints on the tyres.
00:28:25Thank you very much.
00:28:26So news there from Nico Pross.
00:28:28And, of course, when he says leading our class, what he actually means is we're leading
00:28:32the privateer cars in the LMP1 category, which is basically them and the Straka HPD, because
00:28:40the other cars, the other five cars, are all factory prototypes.
00:28:44So looking here at Marino Franchitti's car, what looks like a major fire, in fact, is just
00:28:49unburnt fuel in the exhaust.
00:28:51Radio Le Mans, Nick Damon there, taunting life and limb.
00:28:54But that's the kind of guy he is, standing well back and chatting about it as a pit reporter.
00:29:01I actually accused him of being you earlier on this afternoon, sir.
00:29:03Oh, deep joy.
00:29:05He'll love that.
00:29:06We were on the pit lane together and I accused him of being you.
00:29:08It's bad enough he has to sleep with me.
00:29:10And then you called accusing him of being me.
00:29:13Changing the LMP2 class, by the way, Martin Plowman.
00:29:16Plowey is now at the top, at Plowey.
00:29:18You can follow him on Twitter like everybody else.
00:29:20Ahead of David Heinemar Hansen.
00:29:21And the interesting thing there is that Martin Plowman and David Heinemar Hansen last year
00:29:26shared a car, actually a Morgan Nissan, just like this, for Conquest Endurance in the United
00:29:31States now, again, still driving for the same team for Oak Racing, but in different cars
00:29:36this year.
00:29:37Charles Morgan, at Charles Morgan, will be delighted, obviously, and to answer questions
00:29:42that are bound to come in.
00:29:44We were asked earlier in the week, what part of a Morgan is the Oak Racing Morgan Nissan?
00:29:48And I said the name.
00:29:49Yeah, the badge.
00:29:50And in fact, the badge, I'm not even sure it has got the winged badge on the front,
00:29:54but it's, yeah.
00:29:56And we did, you know, Mark Cole suggested Oak, Ash-framed Morgans, you know, somewhere
00:30:00in there, woodiness.
00:30:01Yeah, not really.
00:30:03After, where are we now, five hours in, Audi 123, the battle with Toyota rages on.
00:30:11They're all still on the lead lap.
00:30:13The battle in the privateer class, the number 12 Lola Rebellion Coupe ahead of the HPD
00:30:18of Johnny Cain and the number 13 Lola Rebellion Coupe behind.
00:30:22LMP2 leaders just changed with pit stops in the last couple of minutes.
00:30:2626, and in fact, no, the two Oak Racing Morgans, 35 and 24, are now ahead, but 26 was the leader
00:30:33at the five-hour mark.
00:30:35And a large LMP2 field, of which we have lost very little at all so far.
00:30:40A couple have had delays.
00:30:42We have lost two cars.
00:30:43But the GTE Pro leader is the 99 Aston Martin that started from pole position.
00:30:50Fred Makovicki ahead of the 97 car, driven by Stefan Mukher and Porsche in third place
00:30:54with Roman Dumas, and fourth place with Patrick Pille.
00:30:57So it is Aston versus Porsche.
00:30:59Ferrari have flagged down to fifth place their best-placed car, the damaged car of Livier
00:31:04Beretta, their expected front-runner of Giancarlo Fisichella, and Archie Hamilton, both as being
00:31:10shown as stocked out on track somewhere.
00:31:13Archie Hamilton in position 31 in the 25 car.
00:31:18Not sure what's up with that.
00:31:19Livier Beretta also showed this being stocked.
00:31:21No, there's a whole bunch of cars there.
00:31:22I don't know if there's that many.
00:31:23Yeah, loads of them are.
00:31:23All right, I think this has got to be a glitch.
00:31:25A glitch.
00:31:2654 is in the gravel trap, though, and you don't know where he is.
00:31:31No, he's way back.
00:31:32That guy, Howard Blank, shown at the wheel right now, is the oldest driver in a race.
00:31:37And, in fact, that is the last running car, the number 54 car, because the 31 car's being
00:31:42towed behind a garage.
00:31:44The 95 car has been retired, or was retired, and into the pit lane comes the number 8 Toyota.
00:31:51So that is a stop that Sebastian Bermier has owed us for a couple of laps.
00:31:55There's the number 12 rebellion car of Neil Yarny, one of very few cars now actually shown
00:32:00as on track.
00:32:01So the timing screen is going absolutely haywire at the moment.
00:32:06Neil Yarny lying in sixth position, and really that's about as much as those privateer teams
00:32:12can expect, unless there are dramatic problems for the factory cars.
00:32:17Yeah, we've said brief offs, haven't we, for both the number 12 and the number 13.
00:32:21And that has enabled the 21 car, the Strakka Racing, HBD.
00:32:25Johnny Cain at the wheel of that car now to move into seventh place, splitting the two
00:32:30rebellion Toyotas.
00:32:32And Johnny Cain actually, he's only about 34 seconds behind Neil Yarny, and he's about
00:32:3614 seconds ahead of Frankie Cheng at the wheel of car number 13.
00:32:41Well, there you can see in the number seven Toyota, Alexander Wurtz, going to take the place
00:32:45back, and has, as the number eight stops.
00:32:48Tracy Trones, Tracy Crones, Tracy Trones, Tracy Crones Ferrari back out of the gravel traps
00:32:54and continues to run round.
00:32:56I shall swap Murray Walker's teeth during this break.
00:32:58Oh, there you have to go.
00:32:59Kevin, thank you.
00:32:59Jeff.
00:33:03We will be seeing you again next week.
00:33:13You.
00:33:17, I need to go.
00:33:20Oh, my God.
00:33:50Oh, my God.
00:34:20Oh, my God.
00:34:50Oh, my God.
00:34:52Oh, my God.
00:34:54Oh, my God.
00:34:56Oh, my God.
00:34:58Oh, my God.
00:35:00Oh, my God.
00:35:02Oh, my God.
00:35:04Oh, my God.
00:35:06Oh, my God.
00:35:08Oh, my God.
00:35:10Oh, my God.
00:35:12Oh, my God.
00:35:14Oh, my God.
00:35:16Oh, my God.
00:35:18Oh, my God.
00:35:20Oh, my God.
00:35:22Oh, my God.
00:35:24Oh, my God.
00:35:26Oh, my God.
00:35:28Oh, my God.
00:35:30Oh, my God.
00:35:32still about it is dry though as you can see from the track it's dry in the paddock it's pretty wet
00:35:37in the bars and the bars are absolutely full huge crowds here i mean people are a bit concerned the
00:35:43weather during the week would put people off but no and you know they're looking at over 250 000
00:35:47again this weekend and uh that's le mans it's a huge pool that's fantastic isn't it i just saw an
00:35:53overhead shot i didn't know there was a stadium inside of uh yeah yeah absolutely that's the mma
00:35:58arena like a wemley yeah yeah absolutely mm arena the mutual mensuel which is the local uh insurance
00:36:06company so that's their big sports arena in there and on board yeah i know everything oh i'm a daddy
00:36:12this will come to you when you're a dad you're allowed to know everything also you must embarrass
00:36:17your children at every possible opportunity that's the law on the pit road is sebastian bwemi we just
00:36:23saw the positions change with pit stops he got ahead of alexander wurtz as wurtz stopped
00:36:28uh beg your pardon uh bwemi has got ahead of bwemi oh and somebody has shed a lot of carnage
00:36:34that is uh 36 so that's the alpine that's the alpine yeah that is the alpine that's blown a rear
00:36:41tire and blown out as it hasn't blown any bodywork well he's taking his rear panels off isn't it i
00:36:46think no it hasn't he's looking around going where where is it where did that come from it's a left
00:36:51rear puncture now you see over the wheels on all the prototypes there is no longer solid bodywork
00:36:57there's a big hole to allow air to escape from the wheel arches when the car gets sideways
00:37:01and and they've got fences around the inside of that to sort of channel air around the rear wing
00:37:06he's pulled off on the side of the track do you know what sunbeam you've got about another five and
00:37:11a half miles to go you're going to have to go very very slowly but you're going to have to do it
00:37:16safety car is out and that will make his life very much easier because mark he had only just got
00:37:22out of tertia rouge onto the mulsanne yeah i think you will find that rear panel's gone and it's uh the
00:37:27debris from that all the carbon fiber shards are spread around where we're just about to go through
00:37:31now through tertia rouge um yeah safety car out for the second time in this race seven red flags just
00:37:38to remind you in uh qualifying and practice and in the warm-up this morning and here we are again
00:37:43second safety car of this race how disjointed is that well it it you know it happens these things
00:37:50happen uh and hopefully we just uh hope that nobody goes through too much debris and picks up
00:37:55punctures themselves onto pit road comes the number two car again very heads-up engineering from h
00:38:01howden haynes to get this number two car onto pit road loik duval shares with alan magnish and tom
00:38:06christensen uh loik duval with 10 le mans wins between his two teammates they would love to add
00:38:13another one to make it a three for nishi and nine for tom christensen mr le mans and of course a
00:38:21first one for loik duval so if he gets a chance to be part of that winning crew i'm sure he'd like
00:38:27to well there is the modesty panel uh behind the rear wheels there are enclosure panels for
00:38:32aerodynamic purposes which must be in place and as mark correctly said the flailing rear tire has spat
00:38:38bits of debris all over the road so the marshals will have to get out and recover that but not before
00:38:43the entire field is behind the two safety cars and going slowly enough to allow them to do it
00:38:49get your home mode damon very important it is yeah but i i mean now that these yellows um i think you
00:38:56should probably stay out from that grass or stay out a little bit because he's going to pick up another
00:39:00puncture if not well the problem is on the way in problem is of course the cars run very low anyway
00:39:04and without air in any tire even lower of course and actually what he doesn't want to do is have his
00:39:09wheels dangling over a hole in the grass and the flat bottom of the car beached on the edge of the
00:39:13track safety car is out so the pit lane exit is shut until the next safety car queue goes by so you can
00:39:20lose a lot of time by trying to being a bit too smart and getting in or by coming in anyway needing
00:39:26to come in for fuel because they don't come in for the heck of it he must have needed to come in and
00:39:31unfortunately he's been caught out by the safety car so number two car that was on pole is now going to
00:39:35drop down the order maybe to third fourth who knows that's cooper mcneill actually in the weather
00:39:40tech car um an old rival of mine from american le mans series yeah um i raced with him uh to
00:39:46together uh uh daytona recently see now no no disrespect obviously but there is a driver a proper size
00:39:54yeah he's a he's a sensible size yeah i interviewed him yesterday at dinner looked him straight in the
00:40:01eye with having to without having to bend my neck down so that's it must be the only one yeah he's
00:40:06he's he's huge and a good driver i have yes absolutely he's doing very well so his father
00:40:11is a personal sponsor of mine with weather so so excited to be here you can't believe how of course
00:40:17you can believe how excited he wants to be here but yeah i and we talked about this for one of the
00:40:22great things about rookie drivers is just seeing the idiot grin the glee on their faces this is just
00:40:28you know he rang me about 10 days ago and he said are you a le mans no it's a bit there
00:40:33he's been here for a while unfortunately we don't get to spend the entire month here
00:40:39much of the teams do now looking here at the overall standings already the nmp2 leader is up to
00:40:45sixth place overall oh that's the michelin green eggs challenge that's the overall standing i was
00:40:48going to say david hanemar hansen leads in the number 24 oak racing morgan roman rusen off
00:40:55second in the uh orica nissan in the p2 class and martin ploughman in third place
00:41:03still have not caught up with martin ploughman been conversing with him about le mans for many
00:41:07weeks on twitter and they've still not said hello to ploughy so that's something i absolutely have to
00:41:12do martin if i could just mention there's some lovely messages coming in on twitter there's one
00:41:17question here why is there no uh mercedes-benz or bmw usa um or audi s
00:41:23audis audis uh in the gte okay rule one about answering questions on twitter is to say thank
00:41:30you to andy andy collins reed for your question okay let's touch on why there are yeah there you go
00:41:35see he's a bit of a rookie boys and girls so um why are there certain cars that we don't see well
00:41:42the reason is that the le mans rules for gt racing are different from gt3 which is a
00:41:47as widely accepted a rules package gt3 for instance controls as we see lots of cars coming
00:41:54onto pit road now controls uh or rules are used in things like the blonde pan endurance series which
00:42:01was at silverstone a couple of weeks ago with a 60 car field the cars are predominantly the same a
00:42:06gt3 aston looks just the same to the naked eye as that gte aston but there are subtle differences
00:42:13in whether or not you can things like whether or not you can use abs or carbon brakes or what tires
00:42:18you can use what suspension you know various different air restrictors and various other
00:42:22things in fact we were talking earlier on in the race and it's worth going over the ground again
00:42:26spoke to andrew kakodi from mclaren earlier on and saying okay somebody asked me why are there no
00:42:31mclarens andrew why are there no mclarens and the answer is they've built a gt3 car because the
00:42:37rules were stable they have not built a gte car but they have designed one and i imagine that for
00:42:44audi's r8 lms this is possibly the same for mercedes possibly the same but you can build it and andrew
00:42:52kakodi's got 10 customers wanting to buy one and run one and write checks to mclaren for them
00:42:57but you can only run it here or in other aco events and predominantly that means american
00:43:02lemon series which is becoming united sports car racing next year which will be a convergence
00:43:07of american lemon aco rules and something different that is running grand dam and until that convergence
00:43:14package in gt is sorted and we see where gte goes at lemon as a result because there will be some
00:43:22changing of the lemon rules mclaren are not going to press the build button on a gt3 spec car and i
00:43:30imagine again because gt3 mercedes and audi lms r8 lms's exist but not in gte form they too are waiting
00:43:41until there is a stable rules package and scott elkins and scott atherton are both here this weekend
00:43:46they're from grand dam and alms with the aco they'll meet on tuesday and wednesday to try and thrash this out
00:43:51so they can hopefully publish some rules before next season gets underway and that's the long
00:43:57answer of why we haven't got all of the gt cars that we would like to see and let me just bring
00:44:04you right up today john wickham is here from bentley yes i met him in the paddock this morning and they
00:44:09will announce the bentley gt3 car program in three weeks time and damien's just longing to get his
00:44:17hands on that so he's telling him the brakes will be cool isn't he just warning brake make sure you
00:44:31brake early when you get going again wow so he said he was he was talking about the handling of the car
00:44:36there and he said there was a bit of oversteer on entry and so he's having to release the brakes
00:44:40so the front will come up again and cause a little bit of understeer that is almost like formula one
00:44:46where you get the engineers going jensen you might want to try going a little bit quicker now
00:44:50really that you know how did that not occur to me or lewis hamilton i can't drive any slower yeah
00:44:57would you believe would you believe i was talking to jan martin on the grid today and his engineer
00:45:02butted in and said he's he was fastest in this car because he tells us he can't drive any slower
00:45:08more from lewis hamilton in just a moment
00:45:14more from le mans in just a moment
00:45:14uh

00:48:15earlier on that's the murphy yeah that's the murphy's prototype and they got too much green on
00:48:19the back yikes didn't see that happening was that under yellow flags or there's just a replay of
00:48:24various uh incidents and accidents from earlier in the race it's just replays of various different
00:48:29stuff from earlier on safety car will come in this lap uh so just a quick thing now we've talked a
00:48:36little bit about tires and slicks and intermediates and so on so on question from maria ray a while
00:48:41ago and then maybe got a chance to answer this how come formula one tires don't use lemon formula
00:48:45teams don't use lemon tires then they could go flat out with no pit stops well pirelli were asked to
00:48:51make tires that did wear out and and meant that fast cars went slowly and they'd have to do a bit of
00:48:57thinking and hopefully produce overtaking the great thing about lemon is we've got such long straight
00:49:02such mixed conditions and such long races that overtaking happens anyway but isn't it great that
00:49:09in um in this race and endurance race in these days even with the the duration of the race being
00:49:1624 hours it's still a sprint race it's regarded as a sprint race and that's thanks to the to the
00:49:21reliability of the cars these days look at all the stuff that's been happening because the sprinkles of
00:49:26rain and all that kind of stuff and that's what happens when you race for a whole day and a whole
00:49:29night is is the weather changes and things happen and it's not an hour and a half whizzing around in a
00:49:34tiny little area it's 24 hours whizzing around in a very much larger area and so stuff happens and
00:49:39mark with 56 cars stuff happens to you that you're not expecting yeah and you pick up the wrong cars
00:49:45in the safety car train that number on audi way behind the gt cars no wave hit by here like they're
00:49:51having formula one or indeed in american racing and then damien you've got this problem in the pit lane
00:49:55where you have to wait for whichever one of the three safety cars trains happens to be coming by
00:50:00and you need a bundle of time yeah and i mean yeah i mean obviously they can predict that knowing where
00:50:06the safety car is because that light is always red right um until until such time as they uh decide to
00:50:13release it but under safety car conditions it's always red um but yeah so it's uh do they have to
00:50:20switch the cars off switch the lights off on the safety car yeah the lights will go off at the
00:50:25end of the timing sector when when they're sitting there at the end of pit road or will they have
00:50:29an idea of well you can i wouldn't want to guarantee that the battery will restart it you have to restart
00:50:35no no no you sit there ready to race safety car lights will go out now please and here we are ready
00:50:41to restart there is the number one car in the middle of the train now why do they not pick up the race
00:50:45leader martin well they did but he went into the pits come on give them a break you know i know i
00:50:51love a safety car rant but he went into the pits behind the safety car they did pick him up they were
00:50:57looking at my notes no i was looking at my telly then how then how did he come out in the middle of
00:51:02the train he why didn't he have to wait till the train had gone by he wasn't the first car in the
00:51:06pits he came in he was in the middle of the train and he came in as the safety car queue came down
00:51:11and the pit exit was already shut so there was a queue of cars in front of him i was just testing
00:51:15you both good look we've had a whole safety car period i haven't ranted yet don't tease one out
00:51:21of me i know i'm like a clock very easy to wind up but don't make it easier please so second safety
00:51:28car will peel in oh yeah of course he doesn't peel in here does he peels in somewhere else at the
00:51:33beginning oh no he's dived across the grass what kind of a safety car release is that he nearly had
00:51:39the blooming corvette off i guarantee he was not looking in his mirrors to make sure there was
00:51:44nobody beside him damien we got the rant you got the rant we did oh they had me the safety car had
00:51:51almost gone and it just beat me yeah that was bizarre it could have just i think did he get a
00:51:57last minute call or something no his lights were off so he knew he's coming in anyway maybe he didn't
00:52:01know where he was coming in number one card shown on our boards benoit trelier the man from
00:52:05alanson leading the race for molly jarvis and barack duval sebastian bramy fourth and alexander fifth
00:52:12in the two toyotas the next toy yota is matthew betch in the number 13 rebellion and johnny kane in
00:52:20the striker finally has managed to get himself into the top seven because he's ahead of one of the
00:52:26rebellions at the moment and they're on the same pit stop strategy as the oak racing car this is the 24
00:52:31car this is uh heinemeyer this is the lead car and he's spun it on his out lap after the safety car
00:52:37oh dear well we you know we talked about this how much tire temperatures drop off on the straights
00:52:43here anyway never mind behind the safety car when you're doing 130 kilometers an hour not
00:52:49330 kilometers an hour that was in the porsche curves as well that's amazing he's got a waver that's
00:52:55yeah just must have periwatted around yeah but that's david heinemeyer hanson and he's the course
00:52:59oh my goodness which audi was that oh god he touched the tires as well he's the bronze driver
00:53:07unfortunately the olivier flower and alex brundle his two uh do you know what teammates he was
00:53:12setting some epic lap times earlier on massive piece of debris in the middle of the road yellow
00:53:18flags are out at marshall's post 55 which is on the run between the two chicanes in fact that's
00:53:23right about it's just past the restaurant isn't it well who's that off uh i don't know that is an
00:53:29entire rear bodywork isn't it or is it zoom in it's uh lotus zoom in yeah i'd say it is well that
00:53:36narrows it down to the 32 car since the 31 doesn't exist anymore bodywork from the lotus oh and the 54
00:53:41kcmg car has gone around as well that's this is all this is cold tires down in isn't it after the
00:53:47thank you very much indeed for not having a red ferrari we love you yeah i think as well with the
00:53:54temperatures gone down you can see it's already starting to uh to get a little bit darker so the
00:54:01track temperature will have gone down but tire temp tire temp sinks like a stone and look look where he's
00:54:06going look what's out there as well loads of gravel loads of gravel that is a lotus it's a bit of a
00:54:13alertness of course which is as anyone from the 60s knows it's an acronym for lots of trouble
00:54:19usually serious thank you for the john heinz of impression they've now got the whole of
00:54:23sunderland against us having a little pool the other night so carry on martin
00:54:28so that debris as we can see is down at marshall's post 55 which is between the two chicanes be a brave
00:54:36marshall who gets out the 30 car now off as well we're all doing it that's the uh status lola of
00:54:42uh hvm tony burgess with the hvm i'm in yep hvm
00:54:46hvm status uh officially a canadian car this weekend although david kennedy is uh
00:54:54largely the team owner sponsored by visit florida
00:54:58yeah irish owner and of course keith wiggins is the hvm part of hvm status grand prix david kennedy and
00:55:06teddy yip were status grand prix they won uh a1 with team ireland and adam carroll
00:55:11now there's another driver that should be on this grid along with you damo we need to get adam
00:55:16carroll into proper sports car look at that he almost almost visits the the viper factory doing
00:55:21that as well as visiting florida who is in the 93 tommy kendall there's some ace reflexes from big
00:55:27tk well that's a man used to street racing isn't it so that that for him is just another incident i
00:55:32tell you what if you're in a fight and you have tommy kendall near you make sure you're stood behind
00:55:36him and that was the number two audi that knew that was duval who nearly picked up the
00:55:41now somebody asked me how come it looks like some of the rear lights are flickering safety
00:55:45car back out again you of course recover that uh body panel because because a lot of them are leds
00:55:51and i'm not sure whether the frequency at which an led flashes in some way is affected by the 26 frames
00:55:58per second of of cameras or not i don't know whether that works on hd cameras i don't think the
00:56:03lights actually flicker but i think you know that thing in westerns where stagecoach wheels
00:56:07start to roll backwards because they're out of sync with the anyway i don't i don't know is the
00:56:14answer i don't think they actually flicker but i think the strobing effect is part of the camera
00:56:19effect so tuesday night lotus wouldn't have been able to do this they didn't have enough spares
00:56:23at the circuit to do those they wouldn't have been able to throw steering wheels at the car but
00:56:28you know apart from michael schumacher in spain that's not often a problem is it if you're just
00:56:31joining us the lotus factory team the lotus factory team they did have a legal problem and
00:56:38some of their parts were taken by a french court they were given back the following day and they
00:56:43all remain sub judiciously now so we're not going to comment anymore on it as benoit trillier continues
00:56:48to lead the race which again has gone under the safety car so this group of cars damien they'll see
00:56:53the safety car signs as they come across uh the track but they have they were still racing until that
00:56:58moment yeah and i guess they're just going to be um you know concerned with tire temperatures i think
00:57:06now so be breaking and we're going to be taking a break and i'll be back to you in a few moments
00:57:12so
00:57:19so
00:59:25Three and a half hours still to go, Damon.
00:59:27Not going to work out how many Grand Prixs that is, but we certainly had Grand Prix pace,
00:59:31don't we, until we keep getting these interruptions.
00:59:33Third safety car of the race.
00:59:35We had seven red flags in practice and qualifying.
00:59:38A bit disjointed this year.
00:59:39Yeah, well, invariably that's what happens in this type of racing when you have multiple categories in cars at slower speeds,
00:59:50different speeds from each other and huge closing speeds and et cetera, et cetera.
00:59:54But we have, you know, 18 and a half hours of a sprint race left, really, because nowadays the whole race...
