00:00:58The car is now on the road
00:01:03It was a few hours ago
00:01:05The cars of the course
00:01:07will be on the road
00:01:08in the next few moments
00:01:10The car is still on the road
00:01:13and the gas is still on the road
00:01:16You can't see it
00:01:17You can see it
00:01:28I don't know.
00:01:58I don't know.
00:02:28I don't know.
00:02:30I don't know.
00:02:32I don't know.
00:02:34I don't know.
00:02:36I don't know.
00:02:38So the car is a total write-off.
00:02:39Shinya Nakano is in the pits in the number 25 G-Drive Oracle Nissan, backed into the garage with, again, what seems like an electrical issue, because men are in the cockpit rather than anywhere else on the car.
00:02:50And the 81, eight-star Ferrari we saw, they have done a driver change.
00:02:56Roy Aguas started, Vincenzo Potolicio has got in, and Miguel Rodriguez has just left the pits in the 70 Aston Martin, started by Philippe Dumas.
00:03:04Well, it seems Alan Simonson was conversing with the doctors at the scene of the accident of the 95 car.
00:03:18I have to say, I'm not surprised they took so long.
00:03:21If he was complaining of any aches or pains at all, they will have, Liz Halliday, been very, very careful about his extraction, because it would be so easy to exacerbate an injury by moving a driver in the wrong direction.
00:03:32Oh, no, absolutely, and the rule is, especially if he's complaining of any head pain, neck or back, they will absolutely not even consider having him get out on his own accord.
00:03:41They would have asked him to get on the backboard regardless.
00:03:43So we will try and keep you all posted of his progress and how he's doing as soon as we have more information.
00:03:48Liz, can we just ask you about the safety cars, three safety cars at Le Mans.
00:03:52So how does this help you?
00:03:54If you're having a fight with someone and the safety car splits you, what happens then?
00:03:58Well, it doesn't usually help.
00:03:59I think most of us drivers are a bit grumbly about the three safety cars, just quickly looking there as they try and repair the arm code.
00:04:06That's a huge amount of damage.
00:04:07But, yeah, it is always a topic of debate at Le Mans, is three safety cars.
00:04:12Quite often you could split a group that are having a really good fight.
00:04:15You could actually win or lose an entire 24-hour race for a team by just picking them up in the wrong place with the safety car.
00:04:22So it is difficult.
00:04:23They then get released in different locations.
00:04:25I don't know.
00:04:26I understand the theory of it because it's a very, very big circuit.
00:04:30So it would take a long time to catch everyone up behind one.
00:04:32It's a big, long crocodile of cars.
00:04:34But at the same time, I think they should make more of an effort to pick up the right people.
00:04:38And I just think it makes a mess of things, personally.
00:04:40Now, the question is, because the field was all still in one stream and the leaders hadn't lapped anybody, have you seen a second safety car?
00:04:47I've only seen the one in front of the leaders.
00:04:49So it may be, again, our race director, Eduardo Freitas, thinks on his feet a lot.
00:04:55He may well have said, I just want safety car A out.
00:04:58It's just one long queue of cars at the moment.
00:05:00Let's keep the race as a race.
00:05:02Now, we are seeing more driver changes, I think, and topping off with fuel.
00:05:06In comes the Alpine.
00:05:08It is a core box change on Brendan Hartley's Murphy's prototype number 48 car.
00:05:15Whatever the heck a core box is, I'm guessing it's a big black thing that everything plugs into.
00:05:20Nelson Pansutici comes in for topping up.
00:05:24Who else came in?
00:05:25John Martin came in in the 26 ADR Delta car.
00:05:30That was second in class.
00:05:32So he's conceded track position for that.
00:05:34And an engine inspection for Shinji Nakano's car, that G-Drive Orica Nissan.
00:05:41So that's not sounding too good, especially since it went in backwards this morning.
00:05:45Well, yes, I was about to say, I think that, well, that is the car that had the accident this morning.
00:05:49So with Tor Graves on board.
00:05:52So I don't think he's going to be feeling very happy about that.
00:05:54It's the last thing you ever want to have happen is an accident in the morning warm-up of the race,
00:06:00especially going backwards in one of those cars.
00:06:02It will have done some damage they don't know about.
00:06:03And as we speak, there he goes, it's heading out.
00:06:07I think perhaps there's a misfire they've been feeling or something going on.
00:06:11And they took the opportunity under safety car to get it in and have a look.
00:06:13If it was going a little softer, a little woofley, then yes, absolutely right.
00:06:17So Shinji Nakano, I think, stays in the car.
00:06:19At least that's what the data screens are telling us.
00:06:21So a couple of driver changes, a little bit of topping up.
00:06:24John Martin still in pit road.
00:06:26But red light is on now until the safety car queue goes by.
00:06:30Nothing outside my window, Mr. Red Light Man.
00:06:32And that appears to be the safety car queue on the Mulsanne Strait.
00:06:36So not quite sure why the pits would still be closed.
00:06:40Well, they may have just been finishing going past.
00:06:42I don't know.
00:06:43With where they were, they may have just been going by.
00:06:45I'm not sure.
00:06:46Although not on our cameras, obviously.
00:06:47So the invisible safety car queue.
00:06:50Jan Mardenberg, the on-board camera there, you can see.
00:06:52The young man from Cardiff area of South Wales.
00:06:56Two years ago, he was the Nissan GT Academy winner.
00:06:59Raced in British GT last year very successfully.
00:07:02In with a chance of the championship until the very final race.
00:07:05And a winner in, by the hair of a breath, a breadth of a hair even, at Brands Hatch last year.
00:07:14Now racing in Formula 3 European.
00:07:16That's a Silverstone hair at Brands Hatch.
00:07:17Green at Arnage, and you have to wait until you've crossed the line and got the green flag at Arnage before overtaking.
00:07:27Okay, I think that says to us there are more than one safety car out.
00:07:31Because as we've heard from them, they're letting the green go at Arnage.
00:07:34And that would be one of the positions where the safety car would exit the circuit.
00:07:38That was Lena Gade copying as well, just so she got the message.
00:07:41But, Liz, it's not going to be a while yet.
00:07:43We saw the state of the barriers at Tertrourouge, and not a quick job.
00:07:47At least they know where it's going to be, I suppose.
00:07:49So lights are going out at the first chicane, and they'll get the green at Arnage?
00:07:55Well, green flag means racing.
00:07:57Yeah, because the three safety cars pull off at different points around the circuit.
00:08:02Ah, now we've just got a second queue of cars coming by.
00:08:05Yeah, we've got more safety cars out.
00:08:07This is outside our window, and it all goes quiet for about three minutes,
00:08:12and then another huge queue comes by.
00:08:13So this is essentially the GT car train.
00:08:15Yeah, there is your GT-class second-placed car of Mark Lieb.
00:08:21Darren Turner is not behind that safety car.
00:08:25He's just been handed about half a lap.
00:08:30Hmm.
00:08:31That's not Lieb in the Porsche in second place, unless it's the other Porsche.
00:08:35Well, normally, early on in the race would be the easiest time for them
00:08:38to pick up the right rows of cars.
00:08:40But then these are, yeah, this is the trouble.
00:08:42Those cars have gotten stuck waiting for the different crocodiles to go by.
00:08:45I'm not sure when they're going to let them off.
00:08:47Because the safety car was miles away.
00:08:49They've been sat there for three or four minutes.
00:08:52Afraid that's, I have to say, that's probably not quite the right understanding of the rules
00:08:57by the man with the red lights.
00:08:58I think we're just confused.
00:08:58What we're getting at right now is we don't really know what's going on.
00:09:01Can I imagine this happened last year, and they did give a lap back to two or three teams
00:09:06after this happened.
00:09:07That's right.
00:09:07Again, if we're saying, I think they should have been released, then maybe they ought to
00:09:13be training the guys at the end of the pit lane better.
00:09:16Let's hear from Kamui Kobayashi down in the Toyota pit while we wait for the repairs, the
00:09:22barriers.
00:09:22This could be, this could eat up at least the first fuel stint for these cars.
00:09:27They could be pitting under yellow.
00:09:28Let's get down.
00:09:29Let's get down.
00:09:30Kamui Kobayashi, a rookie here in Le Mans.
00:09:37How do you experience the beginning of this race?
00:09:40First of all, I'm very happy to hear.
00:09:43I'm still looking.
00:09:44Well, I mean, first time in Le Mans, it's great, you know, everything I think different
00:09:51than what I used to.
00:09:52And I think very interesting things, so good spectator here.
00:09:57Everybody is so excited about this racing, and I'm very happy to be here.
00:10:02Well, I mean, 24 hours, which is a completely different sprint race, so we have to change
00:10:07completely mind to adapt what we need to do, what I need to do in the moment, in the right
00:10:13moment.
00:10:14Of course, I think it's our goal where we are in the after the checkup track, so, you know,
00:10:19try to focus on the after the checkup track.
00:10:21Don't waste too much time in the beginning, and I think this is our goal.
00:10:25I see you are in race wear, when is your turn?
00:10:29Oh, it's going to be, I think, next time, yeah.
00:10:32Okay.
00:10:33Thank you very much.
00:10:35Well, now, the question is, are they going to do single stints, double stints, triple
00:10:37stints?
00:10:38I mean, with the way that the barriers were still seeming to be coming apart last time
00:10:42we saw, Mark, normally kind of around the 50-minute mark for maybe a lap shy, so maybe
00:10:50around 45 minutes, we might expect to see one or more of the front-running teams pulling
00:10:55off in the P-Class, but they may well end up, I mean, we're now 40 minutes in, they may
00:11:00well end up doing a fuel stop under yellow.
00:11:03Are they then going to put dry weather tires on, or, I mean, you know, there's all sorts
00:11:09of possibilities coming up now before we get to the end of the first hour.
00:11:13Now, fuel strategy, of course, has gone completely out of the window for the first hour.
00:11:17We were looking at 10 laps possibly.
00:11:18Well, they've now, they've now done, how many laps, where are we, six laps?
00:11:23Yeah.
00:11:24Um, Toyota, 11 laps, but thinking about even trying 12 if they could be economic enough and
00:11:31try and claw back some of their lost speed advantage on Audi.
00:11:34But, Liz, we've suddenly seen, haven't we, they have a speed advantage.
00:11:37Andre, do you see any more rain around the track?
00:11:38No more rain around the track.
00:11:39No more rain.
00:11:40Thanks.
00:11:41Lena Gade just giving up message to the driver.
00:11:43Well, we can just see him frantically trying to warm up his tires.
00:11:46Safety car speed has increased to 130 kilometers per hour, we've just seen, so that says to
00:11:52me that they're giving a chance for the drivers to get their tires warmed up again.
00:11:56I think that's what we're looking at there, is we're trying to keep it safe.
00:11:59They must have gotten the accident under control enough that they can speed up safely.
00:12:04But I think, at the moment, we're going to see a mixture of what driver changes are doing.
00:12:10I think in the, in the front running cars, we'll see them stay in.
00:12:13Maybe some of the slower cars, they might be trying to cycle their drivers through fairly quickly.
00:12:18Currently leading in our GT Pro class, Darren Turner in the 97 Aston Martin from the Porsche
00:12:24of Mark Leib, the Aston Martin of Bob Bell, incidentally, get well soon to Chris Phillips,
00:12:28were there for one of their tire changes.
00:12:31The car was dropped on his leg this morning.
00:12:33He's got a broken leg or broken foot.
00:12:35So very best wishes to Chris, the first casualty of their race.
00:12:38And the fourth place car, 91 Porsche, Jörg Bergmeister is currently at the wheel.
00:12:43Porsche's brand new 911 racer.
00:12:46And we understand that it might only ever race this once.
00:12:49There might be another new iteration of the car coming next year.
00:12:52We're going to try and get down to the 91 garage.
00:12:55Let's hear from them.
00:12:57Timo, the conditions on track are very tricky now.
00:13:00It's between rain and dry.
00:13:01What do you think about the start of this race?
00:13:03Well, the start is very thrilling.
00:13:05So in every class there were nice fights on LMP1, which we can see.
00:13:08And also on the GT Pro field, it's been very good fights.
00:13:10So far we were running fourth, but yeah, I'm a little bit, let's say, surprised that they cut the GT Pro field in two parts.
00:13:18So we are running fourth currently with Jörg, but we are on the second safety car in the third place position.
00:13:24Aston Martin is running in the safety car ahead of us.
00:13:27So we just lost two minutes.
00:13:28And I think this was not necessary to separate the GT Pro field because it's also bad for the fans.
00:13:34And because they like to see, I guess, a nice fight in the class.
00:13:38So the strategy also will be very important because in the testing session we saw a lot of yellow flags, even red flags.
00:13:45So what do you think?
00:13:47Yes, for sure.
00:13:48We have very limited time on track so far because it was a lot of accidents because I think it's a lot of new drivers as well this year.
00:13:54And they had very limited time because of also limited weather conditions and changing weather conditions in the pretest already.
00:14:00And this year it's very, very tricky with the weather.
00:14:03So I think we have a difficult race ahead of us.
00:14:06But as you see, the competition, all the classes is very, very thin.
00:14:10So you have to push all the way through.
00:14:12So it will be an exciting race, I guess.
00:14:14Especially in the GT category, there is several manufacturers which are very, very close.
00:14:19Will you be next on the car?
00:14:20No, no.
00:14:21Jörg will do another stint afterwards and then it will be Patrick Pillay.
00:14:25And I'm running third.
00:14:26And no, but I'm looking forward.
00:14:28It's a great race, a great atmosphere.
00:14:30And for me, it's very good to be back because last year I was at home after my seeping crash and I had to look, had to watch on TV.
00:14:37So it was a little bit unfortunate, but now I'm glad to be back and I'm fully fit.
00:14:43So it's good to hear from Timo Bernhardt and saves me having a safety car rant.
00:14:47So the drivers don't like it.
00:14:50The teams don't like it.
00:14:51The fans don't like it.
00:14:52We don't like it.
00:14:53Hindhoff doesn't like it.
00:14:54Nobody likes it.
00:14:55Apparently the ACO love it, but it is a rule that always ruins races.
00:15:00And, you know, it is a long track, but you're talking about the best drivers in the world.
00:15:05They can slow down.
00:15:06And we've got the modern technology now that if they don't slow down, you just give them a drive-through at the end of the lap.
00:15:11It's as simple as that.
00:15:12It's irrevocable.
00:15:13You give them a delta time for whatever sector the yellow flag is in, and if they exceed it, straight into the pits, stop and go.
00:15:19Easy peasy.
00:15:20Right.
00:15:21Well, I'm going to love you and leave you all because I have to get ready to head down to pit lane.
00:15:25You see that now.
00:15:26So sorry, everybody.
00:15:27We know exactly where you're going.
00:15:29We just saw Pat down to the on-screen.
00:15:31We know where we're.
00:15:32I know he's not in the car.
00:15:34I'm out of here.
00:15:35There you go.
00:15:36Right.
00:15:37We'll get rid of Liz, and we'll get rid of another commercial break in a couple of moments.
00:15:40And then we will return.
00:15:41In fact, Dr Dreamy's car comes down pit road.
00:15:44Liz, we'll see you back here at 6 o'clock.
00:15:46Well, we'll hear you back here at 6 o'clock, but we'll see you on the screen before then.
00:15:49Driver change as out gets Paolo Roberti and in gets, I was going to say, Mark Lee.
00:15:54Then it's not Mark Lee.
00:15:55So, oh, it's, it's Joe Foster.
00:15:59Change of driver in the Velvo Iron Proton.
00:16:16Just an update on the weather.
00:16:17Looks like it should be dry for the next couple of hours.
00:16:24So, yeah.
00:16:25Yeah.
00:16:26Good luck.
00:16:27So, what's the thing you did?
00:16:28Wow.
00:16:29Yeah.
00:16:30We'll try it a lot.
00:16:31Wow.
00:18:33And unfortunately, he is out.
00:18:35Shinya Nakano with ignition problems.
00:18:38Christian Reid took over the 88 car.
00:18:40The Felbermaier Proton Porsche just now and a driver change and top off.
00:18:44It wasn't the 77 car.
00:18:45Patrick Dempsey, Miguel Rodriguez has taken over the 70 Corvette.
00:18:48And Vittorio or Enzo, depending.
00:18:52Poteliccio has taken over the 81 Ferrari.
00:18:54Brendan Hartley came in with an ignition problem on his 48 Murphys prototype.
00:18:59He's now down in 51st place.
00:19:02And they are cutting up the damage barriers before they can replace them.
00:19:06So, again, this is going to take a long while.
00:19:09The safety car's been out since just before, well, just over half an hour now.
00:19:14And you can see that there could easily be another half an hour.
00:19:16The grandstands are packed.
00:19:18The spectator banks are packed.
00:19:19And everybody is putting down their umbrellas and starting to think about taking off their waterproofs.
00:19:24It's not exactly warm outside, but it has at least stopped drizzling.
00:19:28In the early laps of the race, the Audi 123 at the start was upset.
00:19:33The car that won last year, number one, and the year before,
00:19:36took the lead in the Dunlop Curve from pole sitter Alan McNish in the very first corner of the race.
00:19:42Audi 123 was very soon upset.
00:19:44Mark Cole as Toyota shot through.
00:19:46Nicola Lapierre currently lies second.
00:19:48Anthony Davidson third in the Toyotas that were supposed to be the tortoises to Audi's hair.
00:19:54We're still not quite sure what happened to that theoretical plan.
00:19:58Still a lot of conspiracy theories flying around.
00:20:00Were they sandbagging? Were they just holding back?
00:20:02Did they just want the bragging rights in the warm-up this morning?
00:20:05Although, quite honestly, the world isn't watching the warm-up as much as it is qualifying.
00:20:09But they are one too, as you quite rightly say, Martin.
00:20:12Danny Watts is almost back with his friends in P1.
00:20:15He's only two cars off getting back into the red pack, the LMP1 pack,
00:20:19and then he can start racing.
00:20:21And Danny has actually been flying before that.
00:20:23But he's almost as quick as the Rebellion cars.
00:20:26Well, now, the question is, what's the gap between him and the rest?
00:20:29Is he in the same safety car queue?
00:20:31Yes, he is, isn't he?
00:20:32I think so, yeah.
00:20:33Yeah, I think he is.
00:20:34The big gap is, I think, after Darren Turner, Mark Lieb and Rob Bell,
00:20:39the first three in the GT car, so we've got 28, the first 28 cars behind the first safety car.
00:20:45Car 91 here, this is fourth in the GTE Pro-Class, and that is Jörg Bergmeister's Porsche.
00:20:53But he is now a good third of a lap behind.
00:20:56OK, at Silverstone, that's not much.
00:20:58Here, that's two, three miles behind the car immediately in front of him, which is his class rival.
00:21:05Well, and as Liz said, that can cost you a 24-hour race.
00:21:07Easily.
00:21:08Something like that.
00:21:08That's the big problem.
00:21:09So it's still trying to get heat back in.
00:21:11But as you saw, as we came back on there, the pictures of those barriers at Tertre Rouge, not good.
00:21:16Still a lot of work to do.
00:21:17And, Martin, this is a problem.
00:21:19This is a world-class event.
00:21:20It's live television around the globe.
00:21:22I mean, you know, we're not just in Europe.
00:21:24We're in Asia-Pacific as well.
00:21:26We're all around the world, and people are having to watch this long, long safety car period.
00:21:30What can an ASIO do about it?
00:21:32I agree, but once the barriers are damaged, they would rather watch barrier repairs than watch the marshals trying to cut somebody out of a car in a much worse state.
00:21:42You have got to keep the safety standards up, and it's unfortunate, but it is the way it is.
00:21:46There are our lead GTE cars.
00:21:50Darren Turner in that unique Aston Martin.
00:21:53A fan designed that livery.
00:21:56It was chosen by Aston Martin Racing as their art car livery.
00:21:59And the idea of the dark to light blue, that's the day to night and back again theme of Le Mans.
00:22:05There is the very sad sight of the 95 car.
00:22:09One of the crew with it there.
00:22:11It will not go back to the garage.
00:22:12It will be in Parc Ferme until all the rest of the field join it at various stages, and then finally after 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
00:22:20So I'm afraid that's the end of that car.
00:22:23All we can hope for is that Alan Simonson gets out of it completely unscathed.
00:22:28We heard he was talking to the doctors.
00:22:29So fingers crossed for him.
00:22:32Let me just update you.
00:22:33We have an FI bulletin saying that he is fully conscious, and as you said, talking to the doctors earlier, he's fully conscious, but he is on his way to hospital in Le Mans.
00:22:42Right.
00:22:42Let's hear now from Aston Martin's Fred Macchiavici.
00:22:46He was the man who sat on pole for Ferrari last year.
00:22:49Fred Macchiavici, you're racing.
00:22:50You're running in three at the moment in P3, but the GT field is split up.
00:22:54Does that have any changes for your strategy?
00:22:58Yes, yes.
00:22:59But we have now a big gap to compare the first car, because with the safety car, the three first cars are really on the front.
00:23:06We are really disappointed for the car number 98, because we are a big family, Aston Martin Racing, and we have no information for this moment for Alan, but we hope so that everything is okay.
00:23:16How do you guys, how does, sorry, Bell is coping with the conditions at the moment?
00:23:23The strategy was to be really safe at the beginning, because we saw that it was dumped on some part of the track, and it was to be safe and to wait a little bit.
00:23:32When we will have a really stable condition, at this moment, we will try to push really.
00:23:36When do you go into the car?
00:23:38In second drive, that's why probably around, if we arrive to the triple steam, probably around 6 o'clock.
00:23:44Okay, thank you very much.
00:23:45Of course, Mark Cole, the triple stint will last much longer than expected, because they will be saving so much fuel, running at only 130 rather than 330 km an hour behind the safety car, so everybody will be in parsimonious fuel saving mode.
00:24:04Well, delighted to say that our Eurosport crew is joined again this year by GT Ace Damien, Faulkner Damien.
00:24:10They switched from the onboard to showing you when you went through Tech Rouge. What did it look like?
00:24:17It looks like they jumped climb. I don't know what they're doing. The bottom part of the rail is messed up, so it doesn't look like they changed that one yet. I don't know if they want to keep that peace or not.
00:24:30Copy, understood.
00:24:31Lina, you ought to watch the pictures, not on Audi TV, which is only focusing on the Audis, but on the world feed. We can clearly see still a lot of work to be done, and Andre Lotja there relating that to Lina Gage.
00:24:41And Damien, all the build-up. A lot of these crews have been here for three weeks, test weekend, and then through scrutineering, practice, qualifying, getting into the race.
00:24:50They barely even got started, and somebody's tied their shoelaces together. What's the frustration about sitting in a long safety car queue like this?
00:24:59Well, thanks, Martin, for the introduction. It's great to be back. I missed out last year because I had a test in the USA at around this time, so it's great to be back in the booth. Thank you.
00:25:08Yeah, well, you know, it's all sort of tension before the start, and then, of course, we had a fantastic couple of laps, and now I think they're just eager to get racing, you know.
00:25:18You know, yellow flags are just part of endurance racing, unfortunately, with incidents. We hope Alan Simonson is okay.
00:25:28What about the adrenaline element? You've got the adrenaline at the start. Suddenly, boom!
00:25:32You sit in there. How do you get it back again?
00:25:35I don't know when. I don't really know. I've never really felt adrenaline, to be honest.
00:25:40I think adrenaline is something that you may experience when you're out of control, but I think when you're in control, you may laugh, but I think as we get another shot of that Aston Martin.
00:25:51God, that was a heavy one.
00:25:52That is an adrenaline moment.
00:25:54Yeah, well, yeah.
00:25:55That's where the adrenaline suddenly sinks, but, I mean, the adrenaline is what allows you to focus so intensely
00:26:02on what you're doing, which that's what allows you to drive these cars.
00:26:06It enhances your reaction.
00:26:08It enhances your sensitivity to allow you to feel that the car is going to do something before it actually happens.
00:26:14That's, it just makes you so alive, and that's what everybody gets when they're driving these cars.
00:26:19It's not frantic excitement, but it's that intensity, that intense focus that you've got to have to survive in these things.
00:26:28Well, you know, we're trained to do this. I mean, that's what we practice at, and certainly your mind wants to be one step ahead of where your body is.
00:26:39Or at least with a two.
00:26:40Well, yeah, you know, but your focus has always got to be ahead, and you've got to focus on the apexes,
00:26:46and so by the time you sort of, you physically get there in the machine you're driving,
00:26:52all of your limb movements are much more fluid, and they're doing it automatically rather than sort of, you know.
00:26:58Damien, I think one of the other first things, just to congratulate you, hold your hand up.
00:27:03He's got the ring on.
00:27:03Yay.
00:27:04Ladies, you're too late. You married Lauren a month ago.
00:27:07I've been snared.
00:27:09Well done. She's in Dublin watching this afternoon, I hope.
00:27:12And I think, I'm not sure if she's watching now, but she's going out, she's been invited out for a nice dinner tonight.
00:27:17I imagine she probably watched the Lions squeak home narrowly against Australia, and then went to the hairdressers.
00:27:22That would seem like a proper wife's morning out.
00:27:25Well, when I went to, I said I'd text you with the time that I'm on, she said, I'm out tonight.
00:27:29So, all right, I'm not even going to watch them.
00:27:31Don't bother. I don't need to do that anymore, I've got you.
00:27:34I've got my little finger here, by the looks of it.
00:27:36Just tell us about your own racing at the moment, what's happening.
00:27:39Yeah, Mark, it's all going very well.
00:27:43I just spoke to Kevin Buckler this morning, actually.
00:27:45He's here in Le Mans, Kevin Buckler of TRG, a racing that I race for in the American Le Mans series.
00:27:51We're racing in the GTC category in a Porsche, together with Ben Keating from the Port Lavaca Auto Group.
00:27:58Ben is a fantastic amateur, one of the more, speaking of being focused, he's fantastic.
00:28:06Really, really well-focused, and a fantastic driver, and a great teammate.
00:28:11So, we're having a bit of a tough start to the year.
00:28:15You're probably liking it to McLaren, I guess, I suppose.
00:28:18And so, we're hoping to, we're back on track in two weeks' time at Lyme Rock.
00:28:22So, TRG, the racers group, the only Porsche GT team to ever have won Daytona 24 hours outright.
00:28:29That was something, wasn't it?
00:28:30You can never take that away from them.
00:28:32You're in a perfect position, of course, to tell us what's going to happen next year with United Sports Car Racing.
00:28:36Yeah, well, I think, you know, I've been speaking to a few people up and down the pit lane this morning from, you know,
00:28:45Europeans that want to participate in the category, both as teams and drivers, and Americans, obviously, as well.
00:28:53So, yeah, it's a little bit up in the air as to sort of the clarifications regarding rules and stuff like that.
00:29:00But it sounds really exciting, and I hope that I'm part of it, that's for sure.
00:29:04Well, Scott Atherton and Scott Elkins, who are respectively in charge of IMSA, LMS, and Grandam,
00:29:11are both here for the manufacturers' meetings.
00:29:14There's meetings this morning.
00:29:15There's also big meetings Tuesday and Wednesday to try and come up with a closer identification of the rules.
00:29:20I mean, essentially, when you meld two series with different sets of rules, Damien,
00:29:24each of them has got a lot of investment, a lot of teams with a lot of kit, you know,
00:29:29and loyalty to the two different series.
00:29:32And there's only one rule with this, disenfranchise as few people as possible.
00:29:37You've got lots of loyal customers.
00:29:38Try and keep them.
00:29:40Try and make sure that whatever rules you get are as close to each set somewhere in the middle.
00:29:45You know, with your Venn diagram, make as much of an overlap circle in the middle as you can,
00:29:50and don't count everybody out, because sports car racing can't afford to lose friends,
00:29:55and we need every car we can get.
00:29:56Yeah, no, I agree, but, you know, what's happening is very exciting,
00:30:02because you've got, you know, essentially the France family,
00:30:05who's going to, you know, have, obviously, involved in the merger,
00:30:08and the connections they have with, obviously, they own NASCAR,
00:30:12and they basically own, they have a lot of pull on TV in America,
00:30:16so it'll be very exciting, I think, for the future.
00:30:19I think probably the TV will even be more enhanced,
00:30:21so I think you're going to get a lot of teams that are actually going to want to be part of it in any guise, you know.
00:30:27No need to whisper, Mark, we're on television.
00:30:29Yeah, the one hour, Mark, Martin, we just hit one hour, looking at the standings.
00:30:33And we're only 23 hours to go.
00:30:34Yeah, only 23 to go, and we're just getting the message up.
00:30:37We've broken the back of it already.
00:30:38We're getting the message up on screen, we're on the last lap of the safety car,
00:30:42so we're about to go racing again.
00:30:44Yes, we are, and unfortunately, especially in the GTE Pro battle,
00:30:48the safety car brake is behind the third-place car in the GTE Pro,
00:30:53so 27th place, yes, of Bob Bell.
00:30:57Jürgen Bergmeister further back, leading the Am-Class,
00:31:00the 77 Felbermeyer Proton Porsche.
00:31:03No, that's the Dempsey Del Piero Proton Porsche.
00:31:07Pat Long in the wheel there, in the wheel, behind the wheel there,
00:31:12ahead of Wolf Hensler, so two very pro factory-based drivers,
00:31:17leading for Porsche, Marco Cioci's Ferrari in third in the Am-Class.
00:31:20So, yeah, we have had an hour already of the 24 hours.
00:31:24We've had 15 minutes of racing, and boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen,
00:31:28mums and dads, that's kind of the way it's gone
00:31:31a lot of the preceding days of track action.
00:31:34We should have had 10 hours of track action on Wednesday and Thursday,
00:31:38at least, at the very most conservative estimate,
00:31:41three hours of that were lost to red flags and cancellations of sessions,
00:31:45at least.
00:31:46So, we won't get a red flag in the race,
00:31:49but we may get prolonged safety cars.
00:31:51The safety cars will come in.
00:31:53So, as soon as these cars come out of Porsche curves,
00:31:56through the Ford chicane and across the line,
00:31:58I guess we're racing again, Martin,
00:32:00and then the other two safety cars around the track,
00:32:03they will pull off at their respective posts.
00:32:04One will be the exit from our Nage,
00:32:06and I believe the other one will be at the second chicane,
00:32:10and those safety cars will then park up there and release their fields.
00:32:13Safety cars are ready in the Porsche curves,
00:32:15and the lights aren't off yet.
00:32:16What's up with that?
00:32:17So, they come into the pit lane with the lights on?
00:32:21In this lap.
00:32:22Medical crews are scrambling to be ready in their cars,
00:32:25outside of our window.
00:32:26No, not in this lap.
00:32:28Not in this lap, the safety car,
00:32:30unless he peels off in the old pit lane exit,
00:32:34and he does at the end of the Ford chicane.
00:32:36No, he's leading them round again.
00:32:38Now, we get the yellow flag saying safety car's in this lap.
00:32:42Well, so that was not the last lap of safety cars,
00:32:44and the lights are not off on the safety car,
00:32:46and it leads the leaders round again.
00:32:49So, this is the last lap of safety cars.
00:32:52Eduardo, I'm afraid it is very good with the screen messages to the teams,
00:32:56but I think that was very confused.
00:32:59Yeah, just one thing, Martin.
00:33:00That safety car that we're looking at at the moment,
00:33:03leading all the Audis,
00:33:04may, of course, be pulling off at one of the chicanes.
00:33:07Well, where did it pick him up?
00:33:09We don't know.
00:33:09But if he's saying we're bringing the safety cars in
00:33:11and it comes to the next safety car in point,
00:33:14that's where it comes in.
00:33:15That's no sense if he'd started at Arnage
00:33:17and they go around another three quarters of a lap.
00:33:20They're either in or they're not.
00:33:21And the question is, all we've seen is the leader's safety car,
00:33:24where are the other two?
00:33:25Have they pulled off?
00:33:26Are the rest of the field racing?
00:33:28Damien's keeping well out of this one.
00:33:29Yeah.
00:33:30Sorry.
00:33:31It drives me to distraction.
00:33:34It is so unnecessarily confusing.
00:33:36And now, now the safety cars are coming in.
00:33:39We've been told they were coming in.
00:33:41Cars are pitting.
00:33:42What's going on with that?
00:33:42So would Eduardo Freitas please come to the Erosport commentary box immediately?
00:33:46No, don't.
00:33:47I love Eduardo.
00:33:48No, it's OK.
00:33:50You will restart after turn 11.
00:33:53After turn 11.
00:33:54There we go.
00:33:55That's confirmation.
00:33:55OK.
00:33:56That is insanity.
00:33:57Turn 11 is...
00:33:58Making the safety cars go back to where they started is rubbish.
00:34:02The leader was picked up at the Dunlop curve.
00:34:04Yeah.
00:34:05And turn 11 is, of course, Porsche curves.
00:34:08So the leader was picked up by that safety car,
00:34:12which came out of the exit of the pit road.
00:34:14Why has that not gone back into the pit road?
00:34:16Why is he going meandering off around the countryside?
00:34:18It's not his benefit.
00:34:20Come on.
00:34:21Tire change for the Oak Racing number 45, their art car.
00:34:26And that keeps its driver on board.
00:34:28Jacques Nicolette did...
00:34:29Jacques Nicolette, can he start that?
00:34:32Yeah, he did.
00:34:33Well, he owns the team.
00:34:35Fair enough, I suppose.
00:34:36Can't argue with that, really.
00:34:38And who else is in front of my ear?
00:34:40In the other Morgan, the 43 car.
00:34:47So they topped off and changed tyres.
00:34:50So they're good to go maybe for a double stint now.
00:34:52Ugdi Shonag, the boss of Orica.
00:34:54And the man who is responsible for the operational side
00:34:58of the Toyota team, at least, let's say.
00:35:00I.e., it's his men who are getting grubby.
00:35:03Damien's going for all sorts of exciting bits and pieces now.
00:35:06He's hacked in pieces of Toyota.
00:35:10There you go.
00:35:10Here's the six men that manage Toyota.
00:35:12Indeed.
00:35:12They're Dutch.
00:35:12So, the race being led by Andre Lotterer.
00:35:17We have so far ten laps in the books in one hour and six minutes.
00:35:23And we're on lap 11 now and getting ready to go green
00:35:27at some portion of lap 11.
00:35:31Safety car lights and boards are still out.
00:35:33Marshalls standing on the outside of the barrier.
00:35:35A bit worrying that, Martin.
00:35:37I spotted that too.
00:35:38Well, he is by a gap and it is to make the flags more evident
00:35:41and he knows the safety car lights, at least, he believes or prays
00:35:45or hopes that the safety car lights haven't gone out.
00:35:47Well, I tell you what, if they were coming towards him doing 170,
00:35:49I can guarantee he would not be stood out there.
00:35:52I don't care how enthusiastic he is.
00:35:54Let's just sort of shout for the marshals.
00:35:55There's 2,000 marshals here this weekend.
00:35:582,000, Damien.
00:35:59That's a crazy number.
00:36:00I mean, can you imagine?
00:36:01I was sat home in Dublin, actually, listening to you, Mark.
00:36:03You mentioned that the other day.
00:36:05And it's a phenomenal amount of marshals.
00:36:08And something like 150 or 130 posts.
00:36:11And from all nations.
00:36:13Lots, obviously, from France, but they come across the channel
00:36:15from the UK, from Germany, from all over Europe.
00:36:17They come from America.
00:36:19They come from Australia and New Zealand.
00:36:20So, without whom, none of us would be doing any of this.
00:36:24Because without marshals, who volunteer and do it for free,
00:36:29then there would be no motor racing anywhere.
00:36:31So, whether you're here, whether you're at Croft,
00:36:33watching British touring cars, or wherever else you are,
00:36:35a sprint, a hill climb, Goodwood Festival of Speed,
00:36:37whatever you like, it is all because guys in orange volunteer.
00:36:41Yeah, and just so...
00:36:43We're just about to get Damien divorced,
00:36:45because Mrs. Faulkner, good afternoon, Mrs. Faulkner.
00:36:48Oh, she was watching.
00:36:49Good, she was watching.
00:36:51Put the kettle on, I need a cup of tea.
00:36:52Yeah, just going back to the marshals for a moment.
00:36:54On yesterday, Friday, they had the marshals...
00:36:56He's in such trouble.
00:36:57They had the marshals briefing,
00:36:59and they had a minute's silence there in memory of Mark Robinson,
00:37:02who was the marshals killed at the Canadian Grand Prix
00:37:05just two weekends ago, so...
00:37:06And one of our friends who is down at post 106,
00:37:11Steve, at Legless Marshall,
00:37:13he was involved in another marshalling accident at Goodwood,
00:37:17was hit by a Formula One car, he lost a leg,
00:37:18and is still marshalling,
00:37:20and still one of the keenest motorsport fans you will ever see.
00:37:24And lights are off.
00:37:25Lights are off on the safety car on the run down to Indianapolis,
00:37:28so he's going to pull off into the escape area, Arnage,
00:37:31get out of the way,
00:37:33and now Andre Lotterer.
00:37:35He's got two monitors showing him the road in front,
00:37:38only one showing him the road behind.
00:37:40And he's going to have a Toyota in either mirror.
00:37:44Nico Lapierre in second place,
00:37:47and Anthony Davidson in third.
00:37:49And there is your second safety car queue,
00:37:51which is from positions.
00:37:53Uh, now, uh...
00:37:58They're racing.
00:37:59Safety car's pulled off.
00:38:00So their safety car's pulled off,
00:38:01and the leader's safety car has pulled off as well.
00:38:05So yellow flag's still being shown.
00:38:07For why, Keats?
00:38:08For why.
00:38:09We were told there'd be green flags when they're allowed to race.
00:38:12So we're now being told there are green flags somewhere.
00:38:15Can't see a Marcel's post from where I am.
00:38:19Green flags there as they enter the Porsche curbs.
00:38:21But the cars were going flat chat long before,
00:38:24and Andre Lotterer really got the jump.
00:38:26Damien Fulger, that was vital, wasn't it?
00:38:28Because he wants to leave the Toyotas
00:38:29to deal with alum-ignition, the number two car,
00:38:31as he tries to make his escape.
00:38:33And look how the five hybrids have caught Rebellion napping.
00:38:36They've broken away from the petrol cars, Damien, already.
00:38:39Yeah, and you could just see before the Porsche curbs there,
00:38:41Andre Lotterer was just, uh,
00:38:42weaving to heat up his tyres before he went in.
00:38:46Well, in defence of the Rebellion car of Nick Heidfeld,
00:38:49I would point out that Toyota and the Audis in front
00:38:52have got an extra 200 or 300 horsepower.
00:38:55So, you know, fairly do's.
00:38:58It's not quite comparing, like,
00:38:59with, like, big slide over that wet AstroTurf.
00:39:02Magnet.
00:39:03Yeah.
00:39:05Pinch an inch here, and it'll pinch you back.
00:39:07We're on board in second place with Nico Lapierre.
00:39:09Well, he didn't get to lead on the first lap.
00:39:11He didn't get to lead at the end of the first hour.
00:39:13He won't care about any of that if they're in the lead in the 24th hour
00:39:18and take the chequered flag in front.
00:39:19But he's making a real race of this.
00:39:22I think he was just about to take the lead, actually, when the yellows came out.
00:39:25Yeah.
00:39:26It looked like he had all the chances to do so.
00:39:29This is our battle behind the GT leaders.
00:39:32So this is Jan Magnussen in the Corvette, Pedro Lamy in that Golf Aston,
00:39:38Tony Wielander, last year's winner, one of last year's winners,
00:39:42but in a different Ferrari.
00:39:44So this is the battle for fourth, fifth, and sixth,
00:39:47because the Porsche that was in fourth place,
00:39:51they got a bit miffed with being in that line
00:39:53and came in, and I think they topped off with fuel.
00:39:56Oh, and a pass.
00:39:58Yep, that's Wielander inside Pedro Lamy.
00:40:01That's a brave pass.
00:40:03Yep.
00:40:03Go ahead.
00:40:04It's the Porsche curves.
00:40:05Coming through the field, one of the prototypes,
00:40:08that was the Alpine of Nelson Panciatici.
00:40:10John Martin is also coming through the field right behind him.
00:40:14Those guys topped off early.
00:40:17So now we've got fast cars in among slow cars.
00:40:20The leaders have got lots of empty track in front.
00:40:22Oh, and behind the Aston, by the way, the first of the Vipers,
00:40:26and that is Mark Hussens making, I believe, his 13th start here at Le Mans
00:40:30and the most experienced of the Viper drivers.
00:40:35And he's just in front of Pat Long and Wolf Hensler,
00:40:38a Porsche 1-2 in the GTE M-Class,
00:40:40on board with the 8 Toyota,
00:40:42and that is Anthony Davidson in third place
00:40:44as they've got a battle on their hands, keeping Nish back.
00:40:49They swapped. Davidson's got ahead of Lapierre.
00:40:50Oh, has he?
00:40:51Yeah, just coming down into Mulsanne.
00:40:54Headlights flashing.
00:40:56Leader is coming into traffic.
00:40:57Who's that?
00:40:58An orange and black car.
00:41:00Oh, I know who that is.
00:41:01That's the Bouton-Gignon car.
00:41:05And McNish having a look.
00:41:07He's got him.
00:41:08He's got Lapierre.
00:41:08So what's happened to Nico Lapierre,
00:41:10who was looking to take the lead,
00:41:12and he's now sinking like a stone?
00:41:13Have his tyres not come up to tension, Damien?
00:41:16Is that part of the problem, maybe?
00:41:18It's difficult to know, really.
00:41:20As you see there, it just locked up.
00:41:22Davidson locks up the left rear and into Indianapolis.
00:41:26Now, listen, we...
00:41:27It's difficult to know.
00:41:27Maybe his temperatures weren't quite up to...
00:41:29We speculated right at the start,
00:41:31as they're now catching the 70 Corvette
00:41:33that changed drivers earlier on in the GTE M-Class.
00:41:36We speculated at the start,
00:41:37maybe they had gone on a slightly different tyre.
00:41:39Maybe the Audis were on pure slicks,
00:41:42and maybe the Toyotas were on the slick-immediate
00:41:45that Michelin would have introduced,
00:41:47and maybe they just had a better tyre
00:41:48for those nasty conditions,
00:41:51and maybe it's not quite as better this time.
00:41:53Well, the Audis are flying now, Damien.
00:41:55Look at that.
00:41:55Fastest sector one for Lotta,
00:41:57and fastest sector two for McNish.
00:42:00Well, I'm sorry, I didn't understand a word of that.
00:42:06I don't think it was scrambled.
00:42:08I think it was just...
00:42:09No, it was Nico Lapierre,
00:42:11and I think he was complaining about something.
00:42:14And so, in that battle at the beginning,
00:42:17when it was greasy,
00:42:19and the Audis weren't running away,
00:42:20and the Toyotas were all over them,
00:42:22was that a tyre deal?
00:42:23Did Audi go on a pure slick?
00:42:25Did Toyota go on Michelin's super soft,
00:42:28ungrooved intermediate?
00:42:29And is Lapierre now paying the penalty?
00:42:31I think Audi did definitely go on a...
00:42:34because we just heard from Trulier
00:42:36during the yellow just there on another broadcast.
00:42:40You can say Radio Le Mans.
00:42:42He said Radio Le Mans.
00:42:45And, yeah, he was definitely...
00:42:47As far as he knew,
00:42:48the three cars started on slick, so, yeah.
00:42:50Danny Watts is back with his friends in P1,
00:42:52so we've got the eight P1 cars in the top eight,
00:42:55Danny having started from 36th on the grid.
00:42:57All the red blocks together.
00:42:59Yeah, absolutely.
00:43:00Down pit road comes the 24 Oak Racing Morgan.
00:43:02And that car was in the lead in the P2 class.
00:43:08Olivier Pla comes in for hopefully just fuel
00:43:11and a top-up of water bottle going in.
00:43:14Lotra has just set the fastest lap of the race,
00:43:173.25.8.
00:43:19So that is a...
00:43:20Is that a 3.25 or a 3.28?
00:43:22It's so hard to read.
00:43:243.25.8, three seconds of pole lap.
00:43:29So the Audis have now got the tyre
00:43:32and the car for the conditions.
00:43:34The race is on again here at Le Mans.

00:46:05Carlton Kirby.
00:46:06Hello.
00:46:06Man on the mic.
00:46:08Oh, my goodness.
00:46:08Thank you, Martin Haven, for taking us through the first hour and a bit.
00:46:11Carlton, great to have you back.
00:46:13Two car just coming in to the pits right now.
00:46:16It's been a bit of an unusual one, I think you might say.
00:46:19Not terribly much racing, as you've already seen, but an amazing start, and, well, Toyota showing
00:46:25that they could take it to Audi.
00:46:27Lots of questions as to whether the Audis were actually running on intermediates.
00:46:31Apparently not.
00:46:32It was all slicks for everybody, but if that means that as the top of the race was graced
00:46:39with a little bit of moisture, that Toyota go much better in the wet, well, who knows?
00:46:44Yeah, we could be in for a hell of a race.
00:46:46Fuel only, double stinting the tyres.
00:46:48It might even triple stint after the long safety car period, Damien.
00:46:54Yeah, in fact, I was speaking to someone, I can't even remember who it was now, but I
00:46:59think it was from Audi, and they may even do more.
00:47:04They may, you know, do travel stints, yeah, obviously.
00:47:09On board at the moment with the seven car, got a tremendous amount of pace out there.
00:47:14Just some...
00:47:14Oh, sorry about that.
00:47:24I was just crossing over.
00:47:25There is the 70 Corvette.
00:47:27Now, I just want to hear where they had a problem exiting there.
00:47:31They've made some very, very early stops.
00:47:33Do you think it was a spin?
00:47:34It looked like a spin there, because it didn't seem to be carrying the appropriate speed
00:47:40that you would have for the Donop S.
00:47:42Yeah, there you go.
00:47:43Well spotted, Carlton.
00:47:44And this is the car, of course, that was heavily crashed this morning down at Walsang Corner.
00:47:50And one of the first to come in, I presume they kind of effectively used it as a shakedown
00:47:54and had a quick look at the car very, very early on.
00:47:56A lot of early changes to report, incidentally.
00:47:58The major one, the Delta ADR, had an engine inspection.
00:48:04So, of course, Shinji Nakano had all kinds of issues at the back end.
00:48:09Still not quite sure what the problem was.
00:48:12Murphy prototypes, they had a misreading on their ECU.
00:48:16They changed the central electrical loom, essentially.
00:48:23It's all contained within one box.
00:48:25But there was nothing wrong with it.
00:48:26And so they said it was a misreading by the ECU, which is a nightmare,
00:48:30because that's a more complicated item to actually get right.
00:48:33Right.
00:48:34Luna Gabe was just telling us, you're in next lap.
00:48:36So, wait for that number one Audi pit stop last year's and the previous year's winning car.
00:48:41Just look at the pace.
00:48:44It's absolutely magnificent through this section here.
00:48:46I love these curves and the way the Audis take them at pace.
00:48:50It's almost flat.
00:48:51Yeah, it's crazy.
00:48:52I mean, it's fighter jet stuff, isn't it, at this speed?
00:48:55Albeit it's on the ground.
00:48:56But, I mean, they just look like they're on rails.
00:48:58And it looks incredibly exciting from here.
00:49:02Well, and this is attacking the pits, as they say.
00:49:05You've got to shed your speed, of course, get down to the, get it on the limiter.
00:49:10And the box is ready for the one car.
00:49:14So, Mark, so far we haven't really had that.
00:49:17We've had plenty of lowlights, not too many highlights,
00:49:19apart from the first sort of 10, 12 minutes.
00:49:22It's been more than dramatic.
00:49:23This kind of throws strategy absolutely up into the air, doesn't it?
00:49:28Yeah, the fuel strategy has gone out the window now.
00:49:30They'll gradually claw it back over the next six hours or so
00:49:33and then get back on spec.
00:49:34But, of course, what they're doing,
00:49:35Audi making sure they don't stop all three cars at the same time.
00:49:38They've made that mistake, so have other teams in the past.
00:49:41Just get cars serviced one at a time as you can.
00:49:44This gives Toyota the lead.
00:49:45Ant Davidson now out front.
00:49:47But how long before they stop, Damien?
00:49:49Yeah, well, I mean, I was reading various reports
00:49:52that mean that they've been given three more litres of fuel.
00:49:55I know there was, I think, a report on, I think it was Autosport,
00:49:59I read it, or somewhere, forgive me if it wasn't,
00:50:02that they might get two more laps.
00:50:04But I heard someone saying, well, three litres won't even get you one lap.
00:50:08So I don't know why people were confused by that.
00:50:11But that's the million-dollar question,
00:50:13how far they can go more than Audi.
00:50:14And it's all the petrol cars have got three litres in LP1.
00:50:17We noticed Nick Heidfeld's also in the pits at the moment.
00:50:20So he's made the stop, too.
00:50:21That was a bit exciting.
00:50:22Trying to get around the outside of the Krone.
00:50:24Krone racing, yeah.
00:50:25Yeah, I don't know how much you've seen in the Krone so far,
00:50:28but it has a new livery.
00:50:30After Tracy Krone got it very, very wrong in opening practice,
00:50:34they had a new car delivered.
00:50:36Unfortunately, it came black.
00:50:37And the only body panels that were salvable were the lower section,
00:50:41so it has a black roof.
00:50:42So when you buy your Mini Champs,
00:50:44that's what it's going to look like, if it's correct.
00:50:45Toyota just playing its way through the traffic right now,
00:50:48and the eight car looking very, very good and sturdy
00:50:51in the hands of Anthony Davidson.
00:50:54He is a pocket rocket, and he's out there and doing a good job.
00:50:58It's one and two Toyota at the moment.
00:50:59We're talking about fuel.
00:51:01We're talking about longevity.
00:51:02They think they can go 13 laps.
00:51:04Well, we're on what, lap, what are we on, lap 14?
00:51:12Yeah, but forget that.
00:51:13Albeit we've had safety cars.
00:51:14Yeah, forget that.
00:51:15I mean, in racing conditions.
00:51:16Who are you saying, 13 laps?
00:51:18Toyota.
00:51:18No.
00:51:19Might be 11.
00:51:21Try and get 12.
00:51:22Audi 10, Toyota 11.
00:51:24They might squeeze 12.
00:51:26We've had this debate earlier.
00:51:28I think you read that report I was reading.
00:51:30No, no, no.
00:51:30I've actually heard it out of their minds.
00:51:32You're dropping it all in front.
00:51:33You're dropping us all in it.
00:51:35Well, there we are.
00:51:36They think, Mark, they can make 13.
00:51:39Anthony Davidson is on an absolute flyer, but he's got to be so, so careful.
00:51:43Remember last year, Pier Giuseppe Pellezina down at the first chicane and trying to pass
00:51:48one of those Ferraris tangled, and that ended his race.
00:51:51And Anthony's a racer, Damien, but he is really, really threading the needle, isn't he?
00:51:56Yeah, and, you know, just when he wants to put down some quick laps, when the car is, you
00:52:00know, obviously pretty light with fuel, he encounters a lot of traffic, and, you know,
00:52:05it's not ideal, but that's part of endurance racing.
00:52:07What he's caught up is the second safety car train that was principally GTs.
00:52:10Of course, yeah.
00:52:11There's nothing he can do about that, but as we just see the Toyota mechanics getting
00:52:14ready for a stop, so what does that tell us?
00:52:16Nick Lapierre will be coming in.
00:52:18Well, sorry to have ruined your fuel strategy story, but Toyota are being interviewed by
00:52:23our friends on Radio Le Mans and reckon that they can make 13 laps.
00:52:26So we will see.
00:52:28If it does pan out like that, and they've got this kind of pace, that bodes for some
00:52:32very, very close racing out there.
00:52:34And just look at the way they're carving through traffic here as they go by the
00:52:37Matmut, which also had its incidents in qualification, and in he comes, flying past our commentary
00:52:43position in just a few moments' time, a start-finish straight for others, and the
00:52:477 car attacks the speeding, the speed gun, and in he comes, sheds the speed beautifully.
00:52:54We stay on board with the 8 car as he heads up towards Dunlop, and in he comes.
00:52:58Now, this is going to be crucial.
00:53:01You'll start your counting now, full racing conditions.
00:53:04Let's see how much goes on and what changes are made.
00:53:07No driver change, double stinting, nice clean-up job, fuel goes in, everything else seems to
00:53:12be in a happy place, Mark.
00:53:14And it's important we make a note of this lap now, then we know what Toyota's doing
00:53:17at the end when they next come in.
00:53:19So this is on lap 15 of the race.
00:53:21Ant Davison carrying huge, huge speed as he's going through, but unfortunately his lap
00:53:27really, really blocked a 3.33 last time because of all that traffic he had to work through,
00:53:32all the GTs that had been in the other pace car train before they were released.
00:53:37In comes Danny Watts, right in front of him.
00:53:39Oh, and he can only just get out.
00:53:40It was so, so close.
00:53:42Well, shorter vehicle.
00:53:43They've got room to do it.
00:53:44The Audi's having to park at an angle when they come into their pit stops, and away he goes.
00:53:48Look at this, charging down a Corvette.
00:53:50We were talking about closing speeds earlier on, Damien.
00:53:53And it is almost frightening, particularly at night when you're in a GT car and you see
00:53:58one of these guys hoving into your wing mirrors view.
00:54:01Yeah, it is.
00:54:02And for the listeners, of course, who don't know, the GT cars and the LMP cars have different
00:54:07colours of headlights.
00:54:08With the LMP cars have white headlights or clear headlights, and then there's a yellow
00:54:12like tape over the GT cars to distinguish, to help distinguish the closing speeds, really.
00:54:20Closing speeds are just unbelievable.
00:54:21I've raced with these Audi's at Sebring, and they're just incredibly fast and so silent
00:54:27as well.
00:54:28And their headlights.
00:54:28Anthony Davison, absolutely stopped as he came down to that chicane.
00:54:33He can do nothing.
00:54:34He can do nothing.
00:54:34No, there's just nothing he can do.
00:54:36Only be patient, really.
00:54:40But the Audi's, you always know an Audi.
00:54:43I've never actually been in an event with these Toyotas, but the Audi's, the headlights,
00:54:48they're just incredible.
00:54:51So, so bright.
00:54:52They just light.
00:54:52They illuminate the hole inside of your car from like half a mile away.
00:54:56You know, so you have actually good warning that they're coming.
00:54:59Damien, you're Anthony Davison at this moment.
00:55:01What will you be feeling this traffic?
00:55:02I wish I was.
00:55:03Are you furious?
00:55:04Or do you just, do you have to be philosophical about it, except there's other traffic in the
00:55:08race?
00:55:08This is just part of it.
00:55:09There's really, you know, you can, you can sort of, yeah, there's nothing you can do.
00:55:16You just have to sort of thread your way through it and be really, really, really careful.
00:55:19Well, they're quick.
00:55:20As he knows from last year.
00:55:21They're quick.
00:55:22They're also good at stopping and threading their way through.
00:55:24And a great deal of respect being given to them by the GT cars here.
00:55:26This is where the power delivery and the escape happens.
00:55:30He's got himself a bit of a clear track right now.
00:55:32Still no hospital report, unfortunately, on our earlier incident.
00:55:37But I understand that the driver is OK.
00:55:41He's conscious.
00:55:42That's the FI position at the moment.
00:55:44Do we know what happened to Aston Martin?
00:55:46Still, still, still not clear as to whether it was a component failure which caused the
00:55:53incident or whether it was driver error.
00:55:55And I'll be just talking about that just for the time being.
00:55:58Perhaps even from another car?
00:55:59Yeah.
00:56:00Maybe he got a tap, you know?
00:56:01Well, so far, we've got no report of any contact.
00:56:04So we'll wait to see.
00:56:05Alan's a very accomplished driver.
00:56:06I was with him many years ago.
00:56:08Coming in, in he comes.
00:56:10I can give you another pit report as well.
00:56:11The 31 Lotus, one of the two Lotuses that had all the legal problems, has had a fire in
00:56:16the pits.
00:56:17So we'll just watch that at the moment.
00:56:19The leader is in.
00:56:20He approaches proper speed.
00:56:22It's Anthony Davidson.
00:56:24Pat on the back.
00:56:25Deserved for him.
00:56:27And Toyota have absolutely illuminated this.
00:56:29If anyone said they were sandbagging, well, plenty of people did.
00:56:32They said absolutely not.
00:56:34Something's happened here.
00:56:36These cars are an awful lot better than we suspected.
00:56:39They are taking it to Audi.
00:56:40And it is a joy to be able to report them.
00:56:44How do you explain the quickest time in the warm-up then, this morning, which was one
00:56:48of their fastest laps, if not their fastest laps?
00:56:50It was.
00:56:51It was.
00:56:51It was the Toyota lap of the week.
00:56:53Yeah.
00:56:53So how do they explain that, really?
00:56:55I don't know.
00:56:56Maybe they're just happy.
00:56:57They certainly were with a round of applause when they headed out there.
00:57:02And indeed took the lead.
00:57:03And look at this.
00:57:03There it is.
00:57:04It goes back then to a lotter up.
00:57:06Davidson's not out of the pits quick enough.
00:57:08He didn't take any tires on.
00:57:09Just fuel drivers stayed in, but Lotterer has got back past him.
00:57:12There we are.
00:57:13It's going to be like this throughout the night, we hope.
00:57:16A long way still to go, despite the fact it's leaden skies and overcast as we speak.
00:57:21They had, indeed, there was a worry that the wind would actually start to become an issue.
00:57:27In fact, they stopped the big Ferris wheel here, stopped selling tickets, because it was
00:57:31just too dangerous to send people up.
00:57:32I can report the Ferris wheel is running, and indeed so is the Audi of Lotterer in P1.
00:57:39And this has hurt Davidson badly when he was held up for those two laps.
00:57:42He's dropped to fourth place now, because de Grassi and McNish, who've also made their
00:57:46stops, both went past him before he could exit pit lane.
00:57:50Yeah, that was unfortunate for Davidson that time, but, you know, that'll probably be swings
00:57:56and roundabouts throughout the race.
00:57:57Well, do you know, I think when you're picking your flag as a marshal, the worst one you can
00:58:03pick is blue, especially at Le Mans.
00:58:05You better have a very powerful arm, because you're going to be waving it an awful lot to
00:58:09tell them that slower traffic is coming.
00:58:10Now, we've got huge changes in GT Pro, Carlton.
00:58:14Mark Lieb for Porsche, as we just look at a change of position there, well spotted between
00:58:18the two and three cars, de Grassi and McNish.
00:58:21Mark Lieb for Porsche, the Porsche factory car, has taken the pro lead from Darren Turner,
00:58:26and has, in fact, put three P2 cars between the two of them, and that happened while we
00:58:31were watching Davidson pit stop.
00:58:33Well, Alan McNish, you give him a chance and he'll take it, and he's quite prepared to
00:58:39race his teammates as well.
00:58:41Just before we came on air, Alan McNish was saying, when asked who his main rivals are,
00:58:47he says cars, he said cars are one, three, seven and eight, in that order.
00:58:54There you go, and proof positive.
00:58:56De Grassi has just taken position back again, because he had the inside line.
00:58:59First time ever here, Damien.
00:59:01Yeah.
00:59:02As we go to a break.
00:59:03Whoa.
00:59:18Whoa.
00:59:21Whoa.
00:59:23Whoa.
00:59:29Whoa.
00:59:29Hmm.
00:59:30Whoa.
