00:00:00Tony Burgess, goodness me, that looked really nasty, just seeing the state of the vehicle.
00:00:06Well, you know, as Neville and I were discussing, you know, it was one of those accidents,
00:00:11or certainly it has appeared to be that all the energy, or a lot of the energy,
00:00:15was dissipated by parts breaking off the car, which Neville quite rightly pointed out it's designed to do.
00:00:22Yes.
00:00:23And it was, you know, that's fortunate for the driver,
00:00:27because it looks like that was...
00:00:34Oh, Lola.
00:00:35That's to Ali Jarvis on the number three hourly, being called in.
00:00:40Now, Lola built a very good, very strong car, they always did,
00:00:46and if you go back right to the days very broadly,
00:00:50he, and I will say this sort of carefully, was not known to make compromises.
00:00:57Yeah.
00:01:00So there it is, the 30 car, it is all over for the HMV status GP,
00:01:05and Tony Burgess, we understand, is OK.
00:01:10Let's hope so, it's deep, deep breath time, I've got to say, at Le Mans.
00:01:14And as you know, we lost Alan Simonson earlier on in this event,
00:01:18and Aston Martin race on, and indeed, so do we.
00:01:22Here we are, the eight car coming to the box right now.
00:01:27Standard stop for them, one presumes.
00:01:30No change of driver, is it?
00:01:31I think it's just drink spotters, he wants a talk, that's for sure.
00:01:35Talk to somebody about it.
00:01:36No, he wants this armrest here that they were fixing earlier on with duct tape has come loose again.
00:01:42Yeah, it certainly has.
00:01:43Good call.
00:01:44And he wants more duct tape.
00:01:47Yeah.
00:01:48Blue, preferably.
00:01:49Yes, not being sartorily aware, but yes, he just needs to feel comfortable in the vehicle.
00:01:57And little things like that count for an awful lot in terms of concentration, don't they?
00:02:00Well, absolutely, because if that came loose...
00:02:03Well, you move your arm and you bang your elbow, and you might hurt, but it does.
00:02:07I think it looks like, it actually looks like, yeah, I don't know if it's an elbow or head protecting what it is there.
00:02:16It might go green this time.
00:02:18It might go green, we're not sure.
00:02:20Just keep your brake temperatures up.
00:02:22We are going green in just a few moments time, by the looks of things.
00:02:28Well, it's just suggested.
00:02:32But the danger is, if one of those parts comes loose within the car, then it's like a stone in a washing machine.
00:02:39There we are.
00:02:40We're hearing that the safety car may well be called off in just a few moments time.
00:02:44And I'm failing to see what we're actually looking at here.
00:02:47That is the 30th Lola Coupe.
00:02:49That is the Lola Coupe.
00:02:50Yes.
00:02:50And thank goodness that Tony Burgess got out of there okay.
00:02:54There is a safety cell.
00:02:56You see that.
00:02:56It's the sort of remaining solid part after the vehicle has taken several hits.
00:03:02It looked extraordinarily dramatic.
00:03:04We're going to take a short commercial break and then we will be back for the restart here.
00:03:12Can you believe it?
00:03:13We're not even at the halfway mark of this year's Le Mans.
00:03:18The 90th running of the great race.
00:03:20They're holding them up, waiting for the safety cars to come around.
00:03:23Still illuminated, I've got to say.
00:03:26But I expect, and the teams expect, that we'll be racing again fairly shortly.
00:03:30We'll keep an eye on it just in case we get the restart while we're on the break.
00:03:34Just for the time being, 12 hours and 26 minutes and more remaining of this year's Le Mans.
00:03:44So they're releasing them behind the safety car, which is still on course, all three of them.
00:03:49We will take that break and we'll be back in just a few moments time.
00:03:52Stay with us.
00:04:00We'll be back in just a few moments.
00:04:30We'll be back in just a few moments.
00:05:00We'll be back in just a few moments.
00:05:30We'll be back in just a few moments.
00:06:00We'll be back in just a few moments.
00:06:02We'll be back in just a few moments.
00:06:04It doesn't really look like it looked like at the start of today, I've got to tell you.
00:06:08A very, very heavy impact and Tony Burgess out of the car helmet off bodes well for the Canadian star of the LMS.
00:06:18Johnny Mollum took himself a trip earlier in the car was fighting back up through the order, but yes, Johnny Mollum getting a late call for that vehicle.
00:06:29But yes, late in the night we are now.
00:06:31We are now 23 minutes.
00:06:33Sorry, 12 hours, 23 minutes remaining on the count down.
00:06:39It is 02.36 in the morning and I can tell you the Ferris wheel is still going.
00:06:45The funfair is still pumping out beat music and yes, almost dancing to a rhythm are the lights on the safety car as we speak.
00:06:53And we are waiting for those lights to be extinguished so we can go racing again.
00:06:57We've had a bit too much of this this year now.
00:07:00Yeah.
00:07:01We are 20 minutes away, incidentally, from the first 12 hours.
00:07:05So if you think that was good, we've got another 12 hours to go.
00:07:10It's quite remarkable, isn't it?
00:07:12Yeah.
00:07:13I always find that the first five hours kind of skip away and then you kind of go into slow motion.
00:07:17Night time I think passes, but the problem is when you get dawn and then you look at your watch and you've got eight hours to go.
00:07:24That's always a bit scary.
00:07:26And indeed, well, it comes earlier than that, doesn't it?
00:07:29Well, dawn around 05.30, something like that, just about.
00:07:32So that leaves us with nine and a half hours before the race is actually concluded.
00:07:37Remarkable.
00:07:38Yeah, it's interesting that in this particular race, there has not been a situation at any time where the excitement has eased up.
00:07:51Because for various reasons, as we know, we've had interruptions with pace cars and everything else is all going on.
00:07:58We've had the problems which the weather all on its own caused.
00:08:02And we now actually know now why the Toyotas were quicker and it was a nice clear indication that the conditions were favouring them at the time.
00:08:15The question is now, if there's any more rain, will it favour them again?
00:08:19Well, we were told that they were on a different tyre.
00:08:23Yeah.
00:08:24And the conditions were, well, the conditions were up and down, but I think we had those conditions again a while after that, after the start.
00:08:34Yeah.
00:08:35But they weren't able to replicate that.
00:08:37Those first two laps for the Toyotas were fantastic and they were really, really strong.
00:08:42However, we were probably hoping that that was going to be a race long battle.
00:08:49And as we near the halfway mark, we now know that Audi has definitely got the upper hand in terms of pace.
00:09:01But they've had problems.
00:09:02They have.
00:09:03One car is the number one car, actually, of the Andrea Loiter.
00:09:07It's up to 10th place.
00:09:08It's up to 10th.
00:09:09Yeah.
00:09:10They were going for their third outright victory and are arguably probably one of the, if not the fastest, grouping within Audi.
00:09:23But they've had problems.
00:09:24Hello.
00:09:25And that looks like a fire.
00:09:26And the Marshall's in no hurry to extinguish it at all.
00:09:31It's getting more and more expensive as we look at it.
00:09:34And I hope there's nobody on board.
00:09:37That's a minor explosion.
00:09:39Why these guys aren't there with their extinguishers, goodness only knows.
00:09:43Well, Marino Franchitti actually, obviously, is fond of porridge.
00:09:50And that car's made a bit of a porridge of its cooling department, I would say.
00:09:57Well, I don't know whether its own on board fire extinguishers have just gone off or what.
00:10:02Or maybe not.
00:10:05Maybe even not.
00:10:06Let's have a look.
00:10:07That could have been.
00:10:08That could have been.
00:10:09It could have been anything.
00:10:10Just a bit of heat soap or something.
00:10:11It could have been.
00:10:12He's trying to keep the engine running.
00:10:14Yeah.
00:10:15It's clearly.
00:10:16It's clearly not concerned enough to exit.
00:10:17And, clearly, the Marshalls are aware as well, yeah.
00:10:24There we are.
00:10:25Well, it's all drama here.
00:10:27You join us in a crucial part of the race, of course, as we approach the halfway mark in a little while.
00:10:34We're going to be joined by Chris Parsons, who knows all about the history of this place.
00:10:40In fact, if you've got any questions for Chris, or indeed Neville, or myself, then please feel free to share them with us on Twitter, Carlton Kirby, C-A-R-L-T-O-N-K-I-R-B-Y.
00:10:51Damien Faulkner has still got 17 minutes of his time left with us before he goes and has a kip.
00:10:57Yeah.
00:10:58Any special requests?
00:10:59I know it was a burger earlier on.
00:11:00Are you still hungry?
00:11:01He wants to sing, I'm told.
00:11:03He didn't bring me anything.
00:11:04No, I know.
00:11:05He offered you something, didn't he?
00:11:07I went to Audi Hospitality.
00:11:08In a cup.
00:11:09And they offered me, it was Irish stew, which they make up at night, but more on that in a little while.
00:11:15We're racing again, gentlemen.
00:11:16Here we are.
00:11:17And the one car, well, this has played into its hands.
00:11:20Slight compression of the field.
00:11:22And it is running in 10th place, having been as low as 23rd.
00:11:27This is a great fight back.
00:11:29Lotta, Fasla and Trullier.
00:11:31This was supposed to be the car that was going to win here, but it's the old boys.
00:11:36And with long of tooth and long of experience as well.
00:11:40I'm with Nish, Tom Christensen vehicle number two, which is actually leading.
00:11:44But the one car is battling back and don't count them out.
00:11:49Still 12 hours to go.
00:11:51And everyone has to ride their old fortune.
00:11:53Ollie Jarvis is in the three car running in fourth place behind the two Toyotas of Lapierre and Andy Davidson.
00:11:58They are positions two and three as we speak.
00:12:02But a lap behind Alan McNish in the Audi number two car.
00:12:07And I'm just wondering where they are indeed on course.
00:12:12And that looks like he's going to try and unlap himself here right now.
00:12:16There you go.
00:12:18It's a long old haul back, boys.
00:12:21Yeah, it's never ideal, is it?
00:12:25You know, they just have nothing to lose now.
00:12:28So they can just be as aggressive as they may.
00:12:33I think we're going around.
00:12:34Oh.
00:12:35Oh, we're going around there.
00:12:36That's not what we're doing.
00:12:37It actually is driving.
00:12:39And is that all three?
00:12:40Down the grass.
00:12:41I think the Audis are together on track actually.
00:12:44They were trying to help out, I think, but just hasn't got quite got the pace at the moment.
00:12:48Eleven laps in areas.
00:12:51That was just out of Iron Age, wasn't it?
00:12:53Yeah.
00:12:54Oh.
00:12:55It's a fantastic view, isn't it?
00:12:58Or most of them.
00:12:59These pen cams providing such detailed photography, as you can see.
00:13:04Goodness me, the pace into these curves is phenomenal.
00:13:07Yeah, into Indianapolis where it's banked, really.
00:13:11It's banked on the right and it's heavily banked on the left so they can carry monster speeds.
00:13:16That is one of the Toyotas just ahead of the Audi number one, as we see right now.
00:13:22The Toyotas are sitting, what, 12 laps clear of this number one car.
00:13:31It's on 164 laps completed and the lead Toyota has completed 174.
00:13:37So, yes, 10 laps between them.
00:13:3910.
00:13:40There we go.
00:13:41That's what it's like for much of the time.
00:13:44You have to be absolutely on it, though, when you are called to station.
00:13:48You can't afford to kind of over relax or be off your guard, despite what they look like.
00:13:54Well, everything is sort of military prepared.
00:13:58These teams do many exercises and they do, they actually do, they practice 24 hours, don't they?
00:14:09They do.
00:14:10Simulations.
00:14:11That is Alan McNish, incidentally, trying to get another lap on the Toyota in front of him.
00:14:17And he's on an absolute mission.
00:14:19Alan McNish never takes any prisoners.
00:14:21This is on board with the one car of Lotterer.
00:14:25I think we're looking at an issue is chasing the Toyota.
00:14:28It's, no, in fact, this is on a different part of the track here.
00:14:32That's just tracing his own teammate.
00:14:35There is the one car and I'm just trying to catch who it is in front of him at the moment.
00:14:40Yeah, Andre Larger has just passed the Toyota, as we saw there coming into Porsche curves and he's just about to pull the move on.
00:14:54Oh, we didn't even see who that was.
00:14:56I've got a feeling.
00:14:57That is the three Audi of Oli Jarvis who's letting him go because he's on an absolute flyer making up ground.
00:15:02He's trying to get his lap back, isn't he?
00:15:04Yeah, yeah.
00:15:05Exactly.
00:15:06But he's got a long way to go.
00:15:09Goodness me, look at this.
00:15:10That's a fantastic camera angle.
00:15:12It really is.
00:15:13It's like a like trains going by here.
00:15:16In fact, if you could get close enough, you feel the body shock that these guys, they produce a huge sound wave.
00:15:23Let's have a look.
00:15:25Now, this was the Audi running wide at Arnage earlier.
00:15:30And then the Audi goes past and I think the Toyota also.
00:15:34Yeah.
00:15:35Yeah.
00:15:36Yes, we saw that.
00:15:37We weren't sure if it wasn't a run wide.
00:15:40It's got to gather that back together again and all is well.
00:15:47And the Audi's got a unique when you, because it's diesel and it's low revving, it's very, very, very, very silent.
00:15:55So if you hear it going by at speed, it's like a low flying plane without the, without the jet engine.
00:16:01Oli Jarvis incidentally is two laps.
00:16:04It's a solitary lap, I should say, down on the two Toyotas who are on the same lap, 175.
00:16:10A lap further ahead is Alan McNish as we speak.
00:16:13And this is Oli Jarvis attempting to un-lap himself as regards these Toyotas.
00:16:20And he's up the inside of the seven car.
00:16:22Oh, goodness me.
00:16:24This, the speeds they're carrying at the moment around here are approaching 300 kilometers an hour.
00:16:30That's 200 miles an hour.
00:16:32And when you're busy battling, you can see just a brief lift and the gap just widens almost instantaneously.
00:16:40Listen to the squealing as well of the energy retrieval system here.
00:16:44Yeah, that was, that was slightly naughty by the Toyota there, because Oli had two wheels on the grass there.
00:16:49He just decided that he wasn't going by, didn't he?
00:16:52Yeah.
00:16:53Yeah.
00:16:54This is where the, the, the Audi is really, really strong.
00:16:56But of course, it's one of these energy release zones, isn't it?
00:16:59Here we go.
00:17:00Hits the 120 kilometers, uh, an hour barrier and, uh, goes by.
00:17:04And then you hear the squeal as it, uh, retrieves more energy into the curves, back up to speed,
00:17:10and then we'll deliver the boost as is required.
00:17:13Well, uh, that's a, uh, a lap, uh, got back on, uh, Davidson.
00:17:18Uh, Davidson, uh, Anthony Davidson in the, uh, eight car, or was it indeed the seven car?
00:17:23I think it was the seven car of Lapierre, so he's beat past both of them.
00:17:26Amazing.
00:17:27And, uh, lights ablaze as they come back to the start-finish straight right now.
00:17:32Goodness me.
00:17:35Fantastic performance.
00:17:37With the speed differential between not just passing the Toyota,
00:17:43but the next two cars that he lapped, which gave you, I think,
00:17:47if you were watching that impression of the difficulty,
00:17:50because he came upon those two cars very, very quickly indeed,
00:17:54and he's got to time it and get it absolutely just right, and he did.
00:17:58And this is, uh, we're watching Nicolas Lapierre in the number seven Toyota
00:18:02in for what looks like a scheduled pit stop.
00:18:06They're just cleaning the headlights because they don't have rip-offs, I don't think,
00:18:09or do they on the headlights?
00:18:11Uh, not on the headlights, I don't think, but, uh, it looks like they do.
00:18:14Look, it is a rip-off, yes, there is a rip-off.
00:18:17They, they have about four or five rip-offs on the screen and on the lights,
00:18:21and they are loathe to use them too much.
00:18:25I think, but that, yeah, I think, though, you're absolutely right.
00:18:27Right. Because if you use them too much, you get a dirty windscreen.
00:18:29Uh, yes, exactly. Uh, and also, you kind of run out of chances.
00:18:33Uh, if you can clean them, then, uh, do so, uh, rather than ripping them off.
00:18:38Also, it protects the screen more if you have, um, if you do have a lot of debris hitting the screen,
00:18:42or if someone goes off and shoots some stones up.
00:18:45Um, it's always better to leave the rip-offs on as long as, uh, you can see through them,
00:18:49because they, they're very robust and they're very, um, tough, so they can be cleaned multiple times.
00:18:54It's the same, uh, incidentally, the, um, the, the kind of, uh, uh, plastics that they use
00:18:59are the same as, uh, fighter aircraft windscreens.
00:19:02Uh, so it's, uh, it's extraordinarily light and extraordinarily tough.
00:19:07Uh, so they are very robust and can take cleaning, uh, although not scouring.
00:19:13Uh, leave those at home, Cub Scouts.
00:19:15Uh, once, uh, some Cub Scouts came away, uh, uh, to my dad offered to clean his car,
00:19:22and, uh, they used a, uh, Bruno pad to get rid of the flies.
00:19:25Oh, dear. Uh, it wasn't good.
00:19:28They still got their, uh, two bob, but, uh, it was a bad job.
00:19:31Uh, there we are on board the three car right now and, uh, into traffic,
00:19:36and, uh, he is on a chase down here.
00:19:39This is a great little jewel.
00:19:41Yeah, you just got a glimpse there as well of the challenge that it is,
00:19:44not only for the, for, for these prototype drivers, but even for the GT drivers.
00:19:48Um, one Audi went one way and the, the other one had to go.
00:19:51The other one was forced to go the other way.
00:19:53Um, you know, and all this is in, in the dark at fantastic speeds.
00:19:58You see, just see the closing speeds.
00:20:00It really, really is a challenge.
00:20:02Um, and it's a mental challenge.
00:20:04It's gone down around the outside there at Indianapolis.
00:20:07That's brave.
00:20:09It's a lovely corner, Indianapolis.
00:20:11A lot of drivers, uh, say it's, uh, actually a pleasure to take
00:20:14because it's so high speed due to its banking.
00:20:17Uh, and you really get an impression of it at night, to be honest.
00:20:20Uh, these on board shots of which are making up most of our production through the night,
00:20:24uh, due to the fact that the, uh, trackside cameras have been shut down for the evening,
00:20:28save for on pit row.
00:20:30So, um, uh, I know an awful lot of you love this on board view.
00:20:35Uh, so should we, oh, I was just about to say, should we have another listen to that energy retrieval system squealing away?
00:20:41But, uh, as we do, we almost cut back.
00:20:43That looks like, uh, it's not Peter Dunbrecht, is it?
00:20:48It's certainly one of the Aston drivers, and I think it is.
00:20:51It looks like Peter Dunbrecht.
00:20:52Yeah, I think it's Peter Dunbrecht, yeah.
00:20:53There we are.
00:20:54Uh, Peter supplied his trade all over the world.
00:20:56I remember he used to fly in and out of Japan on a regular basis
00:20:59and just sleep, uh, presumably in business, in business class, uh, in and out every week.
00:21:05And, um, yeah, I said to him, why don't you just buy a place in Japan?
00:21:09No, that's Stefan Muck.
00:21:11There you go.
00:21:12I wasn't, I wasn't absolutely certain.
00:21:14He has a similar nose to Peter Dunbrecht.
00:21:17I know that's what you were looking at.
00:21:18That is absolutely right.
00:21:20Uh, but he didn't, he didn't, he didn't quite look as steamy-eyed, I've got to say, which is my, uh, which is my worry.
00:21:26Yeah.
00:21:27Peter Dunbrecht has a killer stare.
00:21:29He really does.
00:21:30And, um, he does very much looks like an assassin.
00:21:33He speaks well of you.
00:21:34Bushy-tailed.
00:21:35Listen, I love Peter Dunbrecht.
00:21:36I think he's a fantastic driver, but he, he won't mind me saying that, um, he does look like a
00:21:41incredible.
00:21:42There we are.
00:21:43He may not even be listening.
00:21:44So we could say what he wants.
00:21:45And hope no one tells him.
00:21:47Yeah.
00:21:48He's a, he's a great lad.
00:21:49Phenomenal driver and fantastic pedigree.
00:21:51Um, I've known Peter since I raced in, in, uh, Formula Vauxhall Junior with Martin Donnelly when
00:21:57he raced in the senior team.
00:21:58Gosh, Martin.
00:21:59He'll tell him.
00:22:00I'll tell you something else.
00:22:02Chris Parsons won't tell him.
00:22:03Uh, yes, Peter Dunbrecht famously was the man who got airborne with, uh, Mercedes when
00:22:08they came back after a huge hiatus.
00:22:12Uh, was it, uh, 50 years?
00:22:15Um, in 2003, they, they decided to come back after the 1953 disaster.
00:22:20Uh, and, uh, unfortunately, uh, I think that was 19...
00:22:23...1959.
00:22:24No, no, no, no.
00:22:25Okay.
00:22:26Well, they decided, uh, yes, I think you're absolutely right.
00:22:29It was about to.
00:22:30Because Mark Webber flipped twice.
00:22:32Yes.
00:22:33And then had the mother of all crashes.
00:22:36I know.
00:22:37And was lucky enough to actually fall between felled trees.
00:22:39Yeah.
00:22:40Uh, recently cleared, because he would have been straight into Les Arbes.
00:22:43Well, and as it was, despite all the pirouettes landed perfectly on the base of the car, and
00:22:50although badly shaken...
00:22:51And bruised.
00:22:52Yes, and bruised.
00:22:53Was, uh, well, he suffered no serious injury.
00:22:57And, uh, it was, well, quite frankly, a miracle.
00:23:00No broken bones, I recall.
00:23:03No broken bones at all.
00:23:04No.
00:23:05Quite remarkable.
00:23:06And, uh, so Mercedes decided it was time to shut up shop.
00:23:09Uh, they'd been here once.
00:23:10Terrible disaster, as you well know, in the 1950s.
00:23:12And they thought, well, uh, we're not going to have history repeat itself.
00:23:16And, uh, they haven't been back.
00:23:22That is a lovely sound.
00:23:24Uh, unfortunately, it possibly isn't the sound of victory.
00:23:29Not for the number 770 WeatherTech car this weekend.
00:23:32I don't think they're, they're having, uh, they're having a challenging time here at Le Mans.
00:23:37We've seen that car off in the gravel.
00:23:39Tell you what, they're playing a very long game.
00:23:41Uh, they said that that was their intention.
00:23:44And, uh, you know, as the attrition rate goes up here, what are they running at the moment?
00:23:48They're running in position 6 and 7 in class.
00:23:51Uh, last time I looked, which wasn't very long ago, it was, uh, 10th, I think.
00:23:54Uh, but they're up there.
00:23:55Uh, but they're up there.
00:23:56The Viper's not having a, uh, pleasant time today either.
00:23:59Uh, there is the GTE AM, uh, classification.
00:24:03Um, AM represented amateur, uh, designed for gentlemen drivers who can, uh, of course, be assisted by, uh, those more proficient and, uh, possibly younger than themselves.
00:24:14Uh, it is, uh, the 76 Porsche that's leading this category.
00:24:20And it's a real battle between Porsche and Ferrari.
00:24:22In fact, uh, they're locking out the top five positions as we speak.
00:24:27Uh, the Aston in the hands of Stuart Hall, um, has, uh, is, uh, uh, just out of it at the moment, running in sixth place after an excursion by Jamie Campbell Walter into the gravel and beyond and, uh, other problems that they've had along the way.
00:24:44So the car we haven't seen back out for some considerable time is the Dumas, um, number 70 Chevrolet.
00:24:53Um, he went in, you may recall, a while ago with, um, a few problems.
00:24:59And I think that car, which we thought had an electrical fire, I think it's still actually, they're struggling to rebuild certainly electrics on the car at the moment.
00:25:10So we haven't seen that.
00:25:11I see it's falling.
00:25:12I think that might have been, was that not the WeatherTech car with the windscreen out of it?
00:25:15Yes.
00:25:16Because I think that was Cooper McNeil that was, uh, weaved into the garage.
00:25:19Yeah.
00:25:20Uh, if I'm not mistaken.
00:25:21Yeah, and he hasn't been out, I don't think, since.
00:25:23Um, here's the nice day of an Aston.
00:25:26It's, uh, driver change about to happen right now.
00:25:29It's the art car.
00:25:30Uh, blue on one side, white on the other, representing day and night, apparently.
00:25:34Okay, so when does it change colour?
00:25:37In the morning.
00:25:38In the morning.
00:25:40With orange streaks to represent, uh, red sky at night, presumably.
00:25:45There we are.
00:25:47There we are.
00:25:48Tidily done.
00:25:49It's time at Le Mans, as you see.
00:25:50Do you know what?
00:25:51It looks absolutely spectacular suspended, such as that.
00:25:54I love the, uh, sharks vents, uh, cooling vents, uh, around the side exhaust there.
00:25:57Absolutely lovely.
00:25:59Good looking vehicle.
00:26:00Uh, no doubt about it.
00:26:01Just starting to think that the Aston's, and forgive me for this, but, uh, I know it's not
00:26:06Dura-Gur to say so.
00:26:07Just a bit long in the jet.
00:26:08Uh, no doubt about it.
00:26:09Uh, no doubt about it.
00:26:10Uh, no doubt about it.
00:26:11Just starting to think that the Aston's, and forgive me for this, but, uh, I know it's not Dura-Gur to say so.
00:26:21Just a bit long in the jet.
00:26:41I just think they need to find a, uh, somehow, uh, just an amendment to the design, which kind of moves it on ever so slightly.
00:26:48I know that's not a popular thing to say, but there you go, too.
00:26:58Answer everybody's questions, but they're coming in thick and heavy here.
00:27:01Uh.
00:27:02Very little.
00:27:03Very little is the answer.
00:27:04Very little.
00:27:05Yeah, absolutely.
00:27:06Um, I think people are just being a little bit more, uh, attentive, a little bit more careful with traffic.
00:27:11Um, but if they do get a free lap, then it's mightily fast, so there's very, very little, and the lights are such.
00:27:17Not on the track.
00:27:18Lotta ride.
00:27:19Lotta ride.
00:27:20Lotta.
00:27:21Vehicles themselves.
00:27:22Lotta's just on 325.
00:27:23There you go.
00:27:2449 cars.
00:27:2549 cars.
00:27:26Just exiting.
00:27:27Two seconds.
00:27:28Right now.
00:27:29Uh, 49, uh, running, uh, sixth in class at the moment.
00:27:33Seventh, in fact.
00:27:34The Morgan in the hands of Ploughman at the moment, 35 car, is running eighth overall,
00:27:39ahead of the Audi of Lotterer, which had that huge 50-minute break.
00:27:44But I think Ploughman's card is marked here by Lotterer,
00:27:50and the Audi will pass by on his way to make it an all-red top to the scoring boards yet again.
00:27:58I think that's the mission.
00:27:58And, yes, I was just saying he did a 3.25, which is only two seconds slower than the current fastest lap,
00:28:08which McNeish had in the 3.23, and here's another interesting one.
00:28:12Alex Brundle has just done a 3.41, which is that car's fastest lap.
00:28:18That's right.
00:28:19Comes up green, and the next one actually was pretty quick, 2.342,
00:28:24but that car obviously is one of those that is also profiting a little bit by the fact that it's cool.
00:28:31He has dropped back a couple of places, hasn't he?
00:28:34But he's not that far away from the...
00:28:41Sister car?
00:28:42Sister car.
00:28:43Martin Plumman?
00:28:44Yeah.
00:28:45But it says P2, place two.
00:28:47Now, somebody's got that wrong.
00:28:49No, it's the class two, isn't it?
00:28:51That's what it is.
00:28:51Of course.
00:28:52It's all right, yeah.
00:28:54It's just how you write it down.
00:28:59Just in a few moments' time, a couple of minutes, we'll be taking our commercial break,
00:29:04and then we'll be welcoming Chris Parsons into the hot seat.
00:29:08Steve Farndale says,
00:29:10Why do they turn off the cameras at night, deep into the track?
00:29:15You can't have everybody working all of the time.
00:29:18Just a cost issue, it has been historically.
00:29:20In fact, having pictures right the way through the night, moving pictures, as you can see right now,
00:29:26by that we mean manned cameras, albeit only out the pit lane, has been a relatively recent thing.
00:29:34I think we used to just have, well, one locked-off security camera looking down the Mulsanne Strait,
00:29:38and that was about it.
00:29:40So, yes, you're lucky to have us.
00:29:45Or maybe not.
00:29:46Now, there is a proper Le Mans fan.
00:29:48Look at that.
00:29:48In his dressing gown, slippers on.
00:29:51There we are.
00:29:51Cup of tea.
00:29:52One, eight.
00:29:52Yes, absolutely.
00:29:53You have to be dedicated to sit up all night and watch it, but you know what?
00:29:59They are.
00:30:00And 60,000 fans can't be wrong if you just want to come along and enjoy their company,
00:30:05and indeed the glorious sound.
00:30:08That looks a bit secondhand.
00:30:10There you go.
00:30:11There's a bottle of Bushmills that I'm going to get my hands on.
00:30:14You're on the wrong side of the track, mate.
00:30:15I tell you, I think that was the Murphy car supporters,
00:30:19and they've even brought their own ass.
00:30:21And there he is.
00:30:27Some wonderful pictures.
00:30:28I just saw a picture of a friend of mine, Lee Aubert from Greaves Motorsport there.
00:30:33Oh, my goodness.
00:30:33I'd like to say hello to Lee and Gavin as well, who works there down in Greaves.
00:30:37There you go.
00:30:37Just after 3 o'clock in the morning, you see the clock ticking down.
00:30:43We have 12 hours to go.
00:30:45It's the halfway point.
00:30:47There is the number two Audi that leads the classification at the moment.
00:30:50Two Toyotas in the P1 class right there.
00:30:54The number three Audi is running in fourth place, and I've got to tell you that Lotra is up to ninth in the, well, hobbled, I think you might say, a little bit earlier on.
00:31:05A 50-minute break for the number one car.
00:31:08There's your overall classification continues to roll here.
00:31:11P2 is being led by Plowman, incidentally, in the Morgan badge vehicle.
00:31:14And further down the order, the Aston of Makiveki is, the 99 car is leading their class, ahead of the Porsche of Dumas, and Stefan Mooker's Aston.
00:31:27So Aston's one and three in the GT Pro.
00:31:30The amateurs are being led by Bure just for now.
00:31:34It's Porsche, Ferrari, Ferrari, Porsche, Porsche.
00:31:37Can it sound really familiar, does it not?
00:31:40But Stuart Hall's Aston Martin is, for the time being, running in sixth place, and then comes the Chevy Corvette.
00:31:47Andre Lotra has just done a 3.22, 7.45, which is the new fastest lap of the race on lap 170.
00:31:55In the dark.
00:31:56There you go.
00:31:57In the dark.
00:31:58He's on a charge.
00:31:59He's got everything he wants at the moment, except for position.
00:32:03He's climbing.
00:32:05We'll take a break, and we'll keep an eye on it for you.
00:32:07Back in a moment.
00:32:08MUSIC PLAYS
00:32:34We have a car in the barrier.
00:32:54The 54 car has taken a trip.
00:32:57Movement inside the vehicle, and none too serious by the looks of things, but the car is at a halt.
00:33:03And in the gravel, unfortunately, so not looking too happy.
00:33:09Well, excuse me, there'll be plenty more incidents as we head through the night.
00:33:13We bid a fond farewell to Damien Faulkner, who's been a genius.
00:33:17We'll see him again in the morning.
00:33:19He's going to go and get some beauty sleep, and he needs plenty of it.
00:33:23He's a good-looking man.
00:33:25Lotra, then, absolutely nailing a 3.22.7.
00:33:30That is quite remarkable.
00:33:32It's 7.46, and it is the fastest lap that we've had in this 90th running of Le Mans.
00:33:41And it shows, Chris Parsons, that if you are focused, if you are determined, and apart from anything else, if you are quite angry, you can make it count.
00:33:50And right at the end of his fuel run, he'd be stopping fairly shortly, so it was light, but take nothing away from that time.
00:33:56Absolutely remarkable.
00:33:58Yes.
00:33:59It's so often that they do set the fast times in the night.
00:34:04The air is cool, and it's therefore more dense, and the cars can, they put out slightly more power,
00:34:13and there aren't the distractions around, and they can really go for it.
00:34:18Qualifying is often quicker at night than during the light.
00:34:23So it's a mess.
00:34:24It's amazing, isn't it, as well?
00:34:25Operating temperatures of the tyres almost near perfect here.
00:34:29I've got to say that despite all the weather warnings and the wet that we had at the top of today,
00:34:36as we are now less than 12 hours to go, but only just five minutes less than 12 hours, I might add,
00:34:43it is dry, and it is pleasant.
00:34:45Safety car is out because of the stricken 54 car.
00:34:49All three safety cars, lights illuminated, it has to be retrieved,
00:34:53and at night, it poses more of a danger than perhaps a long sight during the day would have offered up.
00:35:00And so the lights are on, and once again, we have a safety car now.
00:35:05Yes, this is a repetitive process, I'm afraid.
00:35:09And rightly too, the problem is that if you've got debris on the track,
00:35:14and you've got marshals, particularly in the dark, you can't afford to take chances.
00:35:17I don't think it will take long to move that car, and having moved it,
00:35:23then I don't think there's a great deal else that has to be done,
00:35:25but in the meantime, particularly since it's facing in the opposite direction to travel,
00:35:30it's really got to be brought down to a position where you can move the car
00:35:36without putting anybody else into trouble.
00:35:38But the safety car rules at Le Mans are always more complicated than they are at most other circuits
00:35:45because of the length of the circuit and the time it takes.
00:35:50And people lose out because you get behind the wrong safety car train
00:35:58or you get split by a safety car, and people are always moaning about it.
00:36:06But anyway, we're under safety car, and presumably...
00:36:09How he blanks out, and he's OK, which is the important thing.
00:36:13The car doesn't look too badly damaged, but once he's actually got out and gone behind the barriers,
00:36:18that's it, so we won't be seeing any more of the 54 car, unfortunately.
00:36:22So one Ferrari down, but plenty more still playing the game with Porsche, it seems.
00:36:27Two cars come in.
00:36:29Alan McNish stays on board.
00:36:31He's more than happy.
00:36:32And yes, if that headlight does not illuminate correctly,
00:36:38then he'll be coming back in for a pod change.
00:36:40We'll see.
00:36:42I'm not quite sure what the issue is.
00:36:45No, it's definitely got a minor problem, hasn't it, because it flashes and then it's off.
00:36:50Race director saying taking this safety car opportunity
00:36:53to get rid of some of the excess gravel that is on the track.
00:36:56That car should not be allowed to go if that light is not illuminated.
00:37:00If they do flag it away here, I think there might be a price to pay.
00:37:07We'll see.
00:37:09Yes, the organisers have been orange and black flagging cars.
00:37:15They've not got lights.
00:37:17That car does seem to have a second light, although I don't know.
00:37:22Maybe not.
00:37:24Well, we'll have a look when we get a front view.
00:37:26So, I believe at least it's intermittent.
00:37:30I've got one of those at the moment.
00:37:32A burner, I believe they call it.
00:37:34There we are.
00:37:35I suppose the only thing you could do, really,
00:37:37would be to take the middle or the two-paced cars out
00:37:41and let the field close up before you take the first pace car out.
00:37:44That's the only thing you could do, which could alter things around a little.
00:37:47How many staff typically work through the night, says Niall Holyoak?
00:37:51I don't know what you mean, whether you're actually talking, Niall,
00:37:55about the pit crews, et cetera, or are you talking television?
00:37:59If it's TV, then I can tell you the Germans are tucked up in bed.
00:38:03The Poles are asleep.
00:38:05But the Brits, we're still here.
00:38:08We're going.
00:38:08I think what they're referring to is primarily the circuit is marshalled.
00:38:12It is marshalled at the same level of marshalling.
00:38:15It has to be.
00:38:15Throughout the 24 hours, it has to be.
00:38:17Yes.
00:38:17And I think there are relief marshals.
00:38:20These guys don't, they're not supposed to do 24 hours.
00:38:24Having had the experience of knowing a few marshals over the years,
00:38:27they do do the 24 hours because you can't stop them.
00:38:30But I would have to explain to all of you folks that there would not be any motor racing without marshals
00:38:38and that many, many drivers have very, very good reason to be very grateful to the marshals
00:38:44on so many occasions for the time that they give.
00:38:48There's a perfect look at your long tail, incidentally.
00:38:51An extra five and a half inches.
00:38:53Yeah, waiting in the queue.
00:38:55I spent quite a few years marshalling and it's a very rewarding thing.
00:39:01In fact, my son is now, he lives in Singapore and he is training as a marshal for the Singapore Grand Prix.
00:39:09Fabulous.
00:39:10And they actually have a school out there for marshals.
00:39:13I understand we have over 300 here at the track.
00:39:16Yep.
00:39:17Quite a lot of the guys come out from UK.
00:39:20Um, and, uh, they basically, you know, they treated that whole thing sort of as a job.
00:39:28Very professionally.
00:39:29Absolutely.
00:39:30Although everybody else says, oh, he's on holiday.
00:39:32No, believe you me, this is no busman's holiday.
00:39:36Proper training.
00:39:37Don't forget that nearly all the marshals attend training courses.
00:39:42Yes.
00:39:42And they are, really, they know what they're about.
00:39:44Under their own cost, I think, as well.
00:39:46Wielding yellow flags for not two minutes, 20 minutes at a time, they have, uh, my admiration.
00:39:56I always feel sorry for the, uh, blue flag man, who's telling, uh, especially Le Mans.
00:40:02He can never be right.
00:40:03Uh, exactly.
00:40:04Can never be, can never be right.
00:40:05I think it's the last flag you pick if you get a choice, to be honest.
00:40:08And, uh, believe me, you're going to never be stopped waving it at the beginning because
00:40:11of the intermingling of classes, uh, also close together, uh, at the start of this great
00:40:17race.
00:40:17I've been reminded, incidentally, and a quick, uh, quick apology.
00:40:20I think I've referred to this as the 90th running.
00:40:22It is, of course, the 90th anniversary.
00:40:24Uh, I do know that.
00:40:25It is the 81st, uh, Le Mans.
00:40:27Uh, thanks to Philpon just for pointing it out.
00:40:30Uh, I keep getting mixed up with the centenary or the 100th as well, um, of, uh, the Tour
00:40:36de France.
00:40:36It's the 100th Tour de France coming up, incidentally.
00:40:39Uh, the centenary was a few years ago, uh, the difference being because of the wars.
00:40:43Yeah, there was naturally...
00:40:45The crane has just gone to the car.
00:40:47Question of Le Mans.
00:40:48They will start, uh, they will start to take it away, but it doesn't look like it's
00:40:52going to be in the next lap.
00:40:54There we are.
00:40:55Uh, still question marks as to when the safety car is going to be, uh, dispatched.
00:40:58You know, the crane is on its weight in the car, but I was about to say that, um, of
00:41:02course, this race, as we were saying earlier on, was first held in 1923.
00:41:07Um, it wasn't held in 1936 because there was a, um, a problem here in France and they
00:41:13didn't hold the race.
00:41:14And, um, then, of course, it was not held between 1940 and the first Le Mans after the
00:41:20war was 1949, um, which was really, I suppose, the first major victory in an
00:41:28international race of, uh, of this nature for Ferrari because Ludy Kineti and Lord Selsden
00:41:36won the race in the two-litre 166 Ferrari.
00:41:41Um, remarkable performance on their part.
00:41:44And one of the things that always amused me is that that's how the Fraser National
00:41:47Le Mans got its name.
00:41:48There we are.
00:41:59It's, uh, the, uh, the argument will rage on as to whether three safety cars is the way
00:42:03forward and whether you shouldn't just, uh, collect the field, uh, collect the leader and
00:42:07then collect the field, uh, behind just one safety car.
00:42:10What's, what's your view, Chris?
00:42:11Well, there are all sorts of, um, developments in process that will allow the organisers to
00:42:19monitor the speed of cars behind the pace car.
00:42:24And it could well be that, um, you won't need full cost pace cars for that, all that much
00:42:32longer because they'll be able to monitor the speed of, of the racing cars and just isolate
00:42:38various parts of the circuit rather than having to, uh, stop racing completely.
00:42:51That's an interesting, um, theory that you put forward there.
00:42:56I know that we have had situations like this before, um, but that's whatever was that that
00:43:02we saw going down the track there.
00:43:04Uh, well, uh, to be honest, uh, uh, the flare was so bright, we couldn't see the safety
00:43:07car lights were still on, but, uh, they are still on.
00:43:10Uh, so, yeah, we're still, uh, behind that.
00:43:12We'll be taking a commercial break in just a few moments' time.
00:43:16Right, uh, go ahead, sorry, Chris.
00:43:19For our viewers, uh, when you see the, the safety car lights go out, that means that that
00:43:26safety car will pull off at the next safety car point.
00:43:30So, at the moment, uh, we've still got some way to go because the lights are flashing on
00:43:35the, on the safety car.
00:43:36Yeah, but also, um, we've been told that the clerk of the Gorts has decided quite rightly
00:43:42that this is a good opportunity perhaps to do a little bit of spring cleaning and get rid
00:43:45of some of the bits and pieces that are out on the track.
00:43:48So, we will be having the safety car for a few more minutes.
00:43:52Probably by the time it comes back, we shall have better news as to whether it's to disappear
00:43:56again.
00:43:56For the moment, it's time to make some more tea.
00:43:59It's time to make some more tea, so it's time to make some more tea, so it's time to make some more tea.
00:44:15Oh, let's see.
00:44:36The Morgan No. 35 is the character of the tournament.
00:44:43And Brandon has got the head in category P2.
00:44:48With the Morgan Oppressing No. 24.
00:44:57The Stunmark No. 99 is in the head in the LMGT Pro.
00:45:03It is not in the Mercedes car that the Porsche 92.
00:45:09And it is not in the Mercedes car that the Porsche 91.
00:45:16The Stunmark No. 37.
00:45:33Welcome back. Welcome back to Le Mans.
00:45:35Welcome back to what has been a fascinating battle.
00:45:39And it really is still just as fiercely adjoined now as it's been from the word go between Audi and Toyota.
00:45:47Still in the lead.
00:45:49Alan McNeish, if you have just joined us for, shall we say, a night that's kept you awake.
00:45:56Well, Alan McNeish in leading car No. 2 is just around about a lap ahead of Anthony Davidson with the first of the Toyotas, No. 8.
00:46:13And then Lapierre with the second Toyota No. 7.
00:46:16Oli Jarvis is in fourth place with No. 3.
00:46:21Audi.
00:46:22And for those of you who are interested to know what happened to the third one, well, he's now up to eighth.
00:46:28And the lot are an amazing performance.
00:46:32A 3.22.7 on lap 170.
00:46:37And that was about ten minutes, quarter of an hour ago.
00:46:39And that's the fastest lap that we've had in this fascinating battle.
00:46:44A lot of people ask us to why they achieve such great speeds at night.
00:46:48Air density is one of the reasons the engines function an awful lot better.
00:46:53They don't have any kind of overheating issues, don't forget.
00:46:56Look at the grinding going on at the moment.
00:46:58They have a barrier to repair.
00:47:00And as you can see, the brooms are out as well.
00:47:02Yes, engines function a lot better.
00:47:04It can be a percentage gain of around about 10% for some vehicles.
00:47:09Very much depends on how they're breathing, how they're allowed to breathe.
00:47:15In fact, air induction units, et cetera.
00:47:19Right now, we are in repair mode.
00:47:23They were talking about possibly bringing the safety car in.
00:47:26They keep saying lap by lap.
00:47:28I don't know if it's just to keep drivers on their toes,
00:47:30but there's no chance until that barrier is repaired.
00:47:33Yes, and I think that's going to take some time to repair.
00:47:35I do too, yes.
00:47:36They've got some work to do there.
00:47:39They've got to cut out sections probably in two layers of Armco
00:47:43and reinsert, you know, new sections.
00:47:47Well, there's concrete footings as well, let's not forget.
00:47:49If they've actually bent the stanchions which hold those things,
00:47:53that can be an amendment in itself.
00:47:55So let's just hope it looked like it was quite a benign area
00:47:59where the centre of the barrier had actually bent.
00:48:02Well, it might look like that, but if you look at the back of the car,
00:48:04you realise that it was actually more than...
00:48:06Well, maybe the word benign was incorrect.
00:48:08A sweet kiss.
00:48:10A sweet kiss.
00:48:12When was the last time you used that phrase?
00:48:15To my wife.
00:48:18I should think so too.
00:48:20At least that's what you say on air.
00:48:24Good lad.
00:48:26There we are.
00:48:27That woman for 53 years.
00:48:29You've got a word against her.
00:48:30Yeah, that's quite right too.
00:48:31These boys have been busy today and it goes on.
00:48:35Do you know what?
00:48:36The 2D there kind of frightened me just a little bit.
00:48:41This looks like gravel smoothing as well, is it?
00:48:43Oh, hello.
00:48:44He's changing tool.
00:48:46He's going to actually...
00:48:47That's a lifter.
00:48:48Lift out a section of Armco and put another one back.
00:48:59There, I'm just telling you the mic's too far away.
00:49:02Just put it in email.
00:49:03I was trying sign language, it just didn't work.
00:49:07Didn't work.
00:49:08There we are.
00:49:09He's going to lift it all out.
00:49:11Lift a great big section out.
00:49:14That's the idea about it.
00:49:16You're quite right.
00:49:17The one stanchion has been actually virtually destroyed.
00:49:20Yes, exactly.
00:49:21There we are.
00:49:22And if that's a concrete footing, they've got to relay it.
00:49:24There is some fast drying concrete that will work.
00:49:27And indeed buried into the gravel,
00:49:30they can actually put preformed concrete slabs as well.
00:49:34But hey, we'll see how they manage.
00:49:36Has anyone actually taken account of how many safety cars
00:49:40sessions we've had today?
00:49:43Or this race?
00:49:44In terms of minutes, I haven't got a total to be honest.
00:49:47I know that the first one was over 50 minutes,
00:49:49so it was an awfully long time.
00:49:51And I'm hoping that this one doesn't last a similar kind of length.
00:49:54What it will allow us to do is to have a chat with some of you out there.
00:49:59John Galloway says he's enjoying life here.
00:50:02I think he's on the Eurosport player.
00:50:04He says he absolutely loves this part of the race.
00:50:07Nighttime with Neville Hay and Chris Parsons.
00:50:10Well, you know, what could be better, frankly,
00:50:12apart from a bucket of roses with these two guys?
00:50:14I don't know what we say to that.
00:50:16What was quite interesting there, we saw a shot from the Audi.
00:50:27Apparently, Audi have developed not only a much more advanced wiper system
00:50:33to cope with the curvature on the R18 screen, but also a washer system.
00:50:40Now, how do you get a washer system to work at over 200 miles an hour?
00:50:45That's something.
00:50:46I guess you have to pay the gentleman quite a lot to sit outside and wipe your screen.
00:50:53Joking aside, it has actually long been a problem with quick cars
00:50:58that the wipers are insufficient to keep the screen clean.
00:51:03I know that one of the better designs Mercedes have, and they do work.
00:51:12And usually they have the one wiper, which does it all.
00:51:18Yeah.
00:51:19On my motorhome, I've got three.
00:51:22And two are excellent, but the ones are wasted space.
00:51:26We're not going for a cruise around your motorhome right now.
00:51:29No, I'm not taking it either.
00:51:34You can see it is the wee small hours right now.
00:51:38We're approaching half past three in the morning.
00:51:41We still have more than 11 and a half hours of racing to go.
00:51:46The funfair is still applying a decent trade.
00:51:49The big Ferris wheel, incidentally, was closed earlier on today due to wind
00:51:54as the storms really billowed around us.
00:51:57This is going to take some time.
00:51:59I reckon this is going to be at least another half an hour.
00:52:02So we're going to take that commercial break in just a couple of moments.
00:52:09Don't forget, if you'd like to spare us your thoughts,
00:52:12we have one Twitter user still here.
00:52:14It's me, Carlton Kirby, C-A-R-L-T-O-N-K-I-R-B-Y.
00:52:19You can join the likes of Neil Rave on Irving.
00:52:24I don't know whether that strung together is an anagram of something, Neil, but anyway.
00:52:30Yes, he says, is there more than one tyre manufacturer choice for the teams across the classes?
00:52:36Yes, there is.
00:52:37Significantly, Michelin and Dunlop are the big boys here.
00:52:41Yes, but there are no restrictions on tyres.
00:52:44And one of the things the teams try and do is keep an eye on what their opposition is doing.
00:52:52Both Audi and Toyota are on Michelin, but different types of Michelin tyres.
00:53:00And I know they have people in the pit lane trying to spot what the other one is doing.
00:53:06So there's a lot more complexity there.
00:53:10Not identified except by barcode.
00:53:12So, yes, commercial secrets are kept.
00:53:16Indeed, clients are respected.
00:53:19Oh, gosh, look at this.
00:53:21It's hammer and tongs at the moment.
00:53:23And they need tongs because they've just arc welded or cut that off with a...
00:53:28What's the flame I'm trying to find?
00:53:31A settling.
00:53:32A settling, yes.
00:53:33There we are.
00:53:34I think the whole question of tyres is one that if we discuss in sort of a little bit more detail,
00:53:42it might be of interest to you, and we'll try and do that.
00:53:46When we come back to you after the break in a few minutes' time.
00:53:51Just one question.
00:53:52Danny Thompson, something to think about, food for thought.
00:53:55Any good stories from marshalling days that you'd like to share with us?
00:53:59So we'll have a little ponder about them.
00:54:01And then we'll get back to you in a wee while.
00:54:05But that question coming in from Danny Thompson.
00:54:09Always have trouble with the family name Thompson
00:54:11because there's so many different ways of spelling it.
00:54:13With a P, with an H, with or without, with one or the other.
00:54:16Anyway, we'll address your question, Danny, after this.
00:54:19Let's go.
00:54:20Let's go.
00:54:21Let's go.
00:54:22Let's go.
00:54:23Let's go.
00:54:24Let's go.
00:54:25Let's go.
00:54:26Let's go.
00:54:27Let's go.
00:54:28Let's go.
00:54:29Let's go.
00:54:30Let's go.
00:54:31Let's go.
00:54:32Let's go.
00:54:33Let's go.
00:54:34Let's go.
00:54:35Let's go.
00:54:36Let's go.
00:54:37Let's go.
00:54:38Let's go.
00:54:39Let's go.
00:54:40Let's go.
00:54:41Let's go.
00:54:42Let's go.
00:54:43Let's go.
00:54:44Let's go.
00:54:45Let's go.
00:54:46Let's go.
00:54:47Let's go.
00:54:48Let's go.
00:54:49Let's go.
00:54:50I don't know.
00:55:20There is a difference in the kind that appeared between the Toyota Torvess and the Dice Bundle.
00:55:50Welcome back.
00:55:56Danny Thompson wanted to know about
00:55:57marshalling stories.
00:55:59I've got two gentlemen here.
00:56:01Each got some treasured moments.
00:56:04Well, I'm going to say the one that sticks in my mind
00:56:06goes back
00:56:08to a British Grand Prix.
00:56:10That's a great star already.
00:56:11Goes back to a British Grand Prix, and it goes back
00:56:14to that terrible couple,
00:56:16Rolls and Hamilton.
00:56:19After
00:56:19both Tony Rolt and Duncan Hamilton
00:56:22have retired from driving,
00:56:24they used to marshal
00:56:25at the Grand Prix at Silverstone,
00:56:28and they chose to marshal
00:56:30at Beckett's.
00:56:32Beckett's was, at that time,
00:56:34the slowest corner on the circuit.
00:56:36Slowed himself down, by the way.
00:56:38Fine viewing of what was
00:56:40going on. Get on with it.
00:56:41And they always came sort of fitted out for the day.
00:56:45But their
00:56:46method of marshalling had to be
00:56:48seen to be believed.
00:56:50Duncan would actually stand
00:56:52in the middle of the circuit,
00:56:54waving at the cars to slow down,
00:56:56if a car had sparped, or something like that.
00:56:58And, uh, as part of this,
00:57:01Tony was trying to stop him.
00:57:03And it was sort of a little bit like
00:57:04watching Morecambe and Wise.
00:57:06Um,
00:57:07and it was very special.
00:57:09My marshalling story,
00:57:11well,
00:57:12I probably did it for three or four years,
00:57:15but, uh,
00:57:15the BOAC
00:57:163,000 kilometres
00:57:18at Brands Hatch,
00:57:19the famous one
00:57:20when, um,
00:57:22uh,
00:57:22it started in the rain,
00:57:24and, uh,
00:57:24there was, um,
00:57:26Barry Smith went off in the Lola
00:57:28on the main street
00:57:30and had a huge accident.
00:57:33Yeah.
00:57:33And, uh,
00:57:34the race was neutralised.
00:57:36And Nick Sarat,
00:57:37the clerk of the course,
00:57:38did not like the behaviour
00:57:39of, uh,
00:57:40Pedro Rodriguez
00:57:41in the Golf 917
00:57:42and hauled him in
00:57:44and gave him
00:57:45an absolute roasting,
00:57:47um,
00:57:47and held him back
00:57:48for quite a long time.
00:57:50I think it was a couple of laps,
00:57:51wasn't it?
00:57:52Could I break it just for a second?
00:57:53You have to realise
00:57:54that Nick Sarat
00:57:55was about six foot six
00:57:56and Pedro must have been
00:57:57all of five foot five
00:57:59in his stocking feet.
00:58:00Yes.
00:58:01And, uh,
00:58:02uh,
00:58:02Pedro lost several laps
00:58:04and won the race by
00:58:06God knows how many laps.
00:58:08He,
00:58:08he,
00:58:08he was absolutely
00:58:10incensed.
00:58:11And, uh,
00:58:12we had a,
00:58:12an accident on our,
00:58:14our corner,
00:58:15uh,
00:58:16uh,
00:58:16later on in the race.
00:58:17And we had to stand
00:58:19in the middle of the circuit,
00:58:20Neville,
00:58:21and actually wave,
00:58:22just as the marshals
00:58:23are doing here,
00:58:24we can see on air,
00:58:25uh,
00:58:26you,
00:58:26you have to,
00:58:27you just have to stand there
00:58:28and push,
00:58:30you know,
00:58:31indicate that they must go
00:58:33over the other side
00:58:34of the circuit.
00:58:34But, uh,
00:58:35that was a very long day,
00:58:37that one.
00:58:371,000 kilometres
00:58:38around Brands Hatch
00:58:39when half of it
00:58:41was wet,
00:58:41that was a long one.
00:58:43Pedro was a remarkable,
00:58:44remarkable driver.
00:58:46Um,
00:58:46for those of you
00:58:47who,
00:58:48uh,
00:58:48sort of think
00:58:49who they're talking
00:58:49about,
00:58:50Pedro Rodriguez,
00:58:50he was,
00:58:52uh,
00:58:52one of two Mexican
00:58:53brothers
00:58:54who started racing
00:58:55in the 50s
00:58:56when,
00:58:57uh,
00:58:58they were about
00:58:5814 and 17.
00:59:01And,
00:59:01uh,
00:59:02they went on racing
00:59:03and came to Le Mans
00:59:04when they were quite young.
00:59:05In fact,
00:59:06the younger of the brothers,
00:59:07Ricardo,
00:59:08uh,
00:59:08they didn't want him
00:59:08to race here.
00:59:09And they stopped

00:59:10the first year
00:59:11when he was about 16.
00:59:11He was about 17
00:59:12when he came here
00:59:13for the first time.
00:59:14Of the two,
00:59:16many people felt
00:59:17that,
00:59:17uh,
00:59:17Ricardo possibly
00:59:18was the quicker.
00:59:19He sadly lost his life
00:59:21practising
00:59:22for the Mexican Grand Prix
00:59:23in a Lotus 24
00:59:25in about 1962

00:59:42who was an extremely
00:59:43successful Grand Prix driver
00:59:44himself
00:59:45always maintained
00:59:46that Pedro Rodriguez
00:59:48could,
00:59:49should,
00:59:49and may well
00:59:50have been world champion
00:59:51had he not been
00:59:52just one of those people
00:59:53who couldn't resist
00:59:54driving anything
