00:00:00the two car as the art car comes in for a late change just missing out on the restart
00:00:04and we were trying to guess uh outguess uh audi saying that luke duval will take the finish but
00:00:09he won't be able to now he's just gone back in the car he cannot drive for more than four hours so
00:00:14unless they do another two driver changes he won't finish the race there'll be one more and it will
00:00:19be uh christensen that gets in and he will cross the line and dedicate the victory to alan simons
00:00:25yeah that's that's uh that's a good prediction 40 000 danes here this weekend and a lot of them
00:00:34come to see tom christensen trying to get his ninth win which is looking good at the moment but uh
00:00:39all those 40 000 would be saddened by deputy countryman alan simonson although he lived in
00:00:45australia most of the time still a very proud dane yes and a friend of uh tom christensen i know that
00:00:51they were uh keeping the news from tom at audi for some time i can't believe he doesn't uh know now
00:00:57as sebastian tiffere was pointing out uh they're running the danish flag at half mast on the podium
00:01:03as we speak and um well maybe that would have uh posed a question certainly in terms of strategy uh tom
00:01:10is going to be getting in the car and doing it for his friend alan simonson uh for the final run so
00:01:16hence the change to like deval they've got the cushion they need and uh they may well carry this without
00:01:21error um and of course that's a difficult thing to predict here unfortunately it's porsche's one
00:01:26and two just for now uh darren turner is on board the aston uh 97 that's that uh beautiful blue and
00:01:32white liveried day and night art car um we'll see we are expecting at least one of the porsches to stop
00:01:39fairly shortly which will presumably put darren turner has just made the pass on bernard who i think
00:01:45is pitting right now we'll take a break

00:02:41Oh, my God.
00:03:11Lukas, box this lap, box for fuel only.
00:03:31Welcome back to Eurosport.
00:03:32You're live here in France, West France.
00:03:35It's 10.33 in the morning here.
00:03:37It's 9.33 at home, in case you haven't noticed.
00:03:40You haven't had your breakfast yet, walked the dog, had your coffee.
00:03:43It's Marco with Damien Faulkner and Carlton Kirby here as we're watching all the action,
00:03:48having just come out of our 10th safety car period.
00:03:52And Damien, more than four and a half hours of running behind the safety car.
00:03:56That's so demoralizing for race drivers.
00:03:59Yeah, and race fans alike.
00:04:00I think everybody, we don't want to see safety cars at all, to be honest.
00:04:04But we've had an awful lot of barrier-penetrating incidents, and it's taken them a lot of time to repair those barriers.
00:04:13In the Straka Racing HPD machine, it's been a really tough race for you, having to start quite a ways down the grid, which you weren't planning on.
00:04:21All the difficult conditions, but you've clawed your way back.
00:04:24You're right there underneath the LMP1 cars now.
00:04:27Yeah, absolutely.
00:04:28We've had a water pressure issue since about an hour and a half into the race.
00:04:32So ultimately, our pace wasn't there against Rebellion, but we managed to stay out of trouble.
00:04:37It's been very tricky.
00:04:38I mean, there's been a lot of safety cars.
00:04:40My night stint, my temperature and my tyres dropped.
00:04:42I couldn't get them back.
00:04:43So it was a bit of a matter of survival.
00:04:45And poor Danny's had about three and a half hours' worth of safety cars.
00:04:48But we're still in the race, and we're running around, and I think we'll be happy with this, Rob, if we can finish as it is.
00:04:54So what's going to be the plan for the rest of the race?
00:04:56I know just keep it tidy, but are you getting back in?
00:04:59We'll see.
00:04:59It all depends on the safety car, really.
00:05:00I mean, with every safety car, the strategy moves forward.
00:05:03So I'd like to get it at the end, but we'll see how it goes.
00:05:06Okay, good luck.
00:05:07Thanks, Nick.
00:05:07The rain is back, and we've got a Toyota spinning there.
00:05:10Which one was that, Danny?
00:05:11Seven car.
00:05:12Nakajima.
00:05:13That's Nakajima.
00:05:14The third-place car, just caught up by the rain.
00:05:16Looks quite harmless, but the rain is here with a vengeance on the other side of the circuit.
00:05:20And look, everyone going, oh, my goodness.
00:05:23And then he took out the map Porsche there.
00:05:25Wow, Nakajima-san.
00:05:27Yeah, I think he lost it there very, very early into the left-hander there.
00:05:33And wow, just cross across the pose of the Porsche there on abated speed.
00:05:39Very fortunate there.
00:05:40I would love to see that again in slow motion, because that was very close.
00:05:44And that was our GTM-AM leader.
00:05:46Imagine he'd landed on top of him, of course.
00:05:48Well, speared him in the driver's side as well.
00:05:50That would have been a nightmare.
00:05:52Kazuki, of course, son of Satoru Nakajima, the famous Formula One hero of the 80s and early 90s,
00:05:57and trying not to emulate his father.
00:06:00Okay, Kazuki, have you, okay?
00:06:03Sixthaw is quite wet, Sixthaw one.
00:06:05Copy, copy, Sixthaw one, wet.
00:06:07What a way to find out.
00:06:10Now, why would the Japanese team not talk to their direct driver in Japanese?
00:06:15We wouldn't be able to understand him.
00:06:16Good point, Damien, good point.
00:06:18In comes the number three car.
00:06:19We were just looking forward to having a little run for a while between the three and two cars,
00:06:23but this one's had to come in for service.
00:06:27Change the bottles.
00:06:28No tyres at the moment scheduled to be changed.
00:06:30These Michelins, as we've heard, can run up to five stints this year.
00:06:34So impressive, are they?
00:06:36And Carlton, you know, we've had a lot about the tyres, about barcodes,
00:06:40but I'm told quite reliably, you can tell the intermediate slicks
00:06:44by having a wider white band around the tyre, so it's not these.
00:06:48Hmm.
00:06:49There we are.
00:06:50So you can put your barcode reader away?
00:06:53Yeah, the barcode reader is actually for the manufacturers
00:06:56to know which vehicle they were on, what time they went on.
00:06:59It actually acknowledges the tyre,
00:07:02and then it will be taken for analysis later on.
00:07:05So, yes, it's all part of the process.
00:07:07New tyres not required.
00:07:08They go back in the garage, ready for the next check they come in.
00:07:11And here, I think this is Martin Plowman in the 35 car.
00:07:15Have I called that right?
00:07:16Yes, indeed it is.
00:07:16He's in the Morgan Nissan Oak Racing.
00:07:19Oakron is the manufacturer now.
00:07:21Jack Nicolet brought out Henri Pescarolo,
00:07:24and what was Pescarolo has morphed now into Oakron.
00:07:27Cars are built here at the Technopark at Le Mans.
00:07:30And a nice run for Martin Plowman.
00:07:33I think you'll watch it.
00:07:34You know Martin well.
00:07:35I know Martin, yeah.
00:07:36He raced a prototype last year in the LMS Championship.
00:07:40But what an event these two cars, these teammates, are having.
00:07:45They've been one-two for forever.
00:07:46Yeah, it's incredible.
00:07:48And Alex Brungle, Martin Plowman gives us two British drivers.
00:07:51We've got another change there.
00:07:53What's happened with the Zytec?
00:07:55Michael Krumm's taken that.
00:07:57Yeah, so he's just taken a pit stop.
00:07:58And he will come out and then set about Roman Rysinov.
00:08:0415 seconds separate Mark Lieb and Darren Turner
00:08:07after the number 91 Porsche took on Jörg Bergmeister.
00:08:13Lieb and Turner then together, essentially.
00:08:17And we'll see whether the Aston has got the pace and, indeed, the ability to get by the number 92 Porsche.
00:08:26We have, of course, as you know, lost two Astons here.
00:08:29And we're just seeing how wet it was from the rear-view camera of the Corvette.
00:08:35You could see absolutely nothing behind it except a couple of headlights of that Ferrari lurking out of the gloom.
00:08:41Hopefully we'll see that again in a moment.
00:08:43But here is a Corvette sandwich between two Italian slices of bread.
00:08:47Yes, and I've got to tell you, I'm just waiting to get the pro battle in just a few moments' time.
00:08:56This is for positions five and six we're looking at right now.
00:09:01That is Milner on board the Corvette versus Kobayashi.
00:09:05And there's the swap of place right now.
00:09:07And the Ferrari's taking it.
00:09:09Oh, look at this.
00:09:11Ferrari's helping each other out.
00:09:13That's a roadblock.
00:09:13Yeah, well, that 51 car, of course, is the lead Ferrari in the race.
00:09:18That's Matteo Malicelli on board now.
00:09:21Matteo really called in at very, very much at the last moment, blindingly quick.
00:09:26And Jeremy and others will tell you here is a star in the making for the future.
00:09:30He's showing that car with Fisichella and Bruni.
00:09:32And that car at the moment running fifth in GT, just behind Tommy Milner.
00:09:39Was behind.
00:09:39He's just passed him, hasn't he?
00:09:40So, and Magnussen coming up as well.
00:09:43So, the Corvettes, as we get towards the end of the race, steady pace.
00:09:46They haven't got the straight line speed, but they're moving up the audible.
00:09:49Look at this.
00:09:50Locked together in a train.
00:09:52Can he get any kind of aero here on that Corvette?
00:09:56A little bit of assist, perhaps.
00:09:58It's a long old drag down, but the 74 car just can't make the pass at the moment.
00:10:03No, but he's getting the tow he needs.
00:10:04Yeah, he is.
00:10:05That's probably the quickest he's been the whole race down that straight.
00:10:08Because he got that tow.
00:10:09So, well, that looks like a very slow Aston that they're just passing by right now.
00:10:16Let's just hope that is not the Darren Turner car.
00:10:19I think it'll be one of the, maybe it's Stuart Hall on his outlap, I think, on board the 96 car is my guess.
00:10:27So, just waiting to come up to temperature.
00:10:28So, are Stuart on board then?
00:10:32Stuart, along with the rest of the Aston Martin team, very, very mindful of the job they've got to do today in honour of their...
00:10:38The 97 car incidentally that we will be hooking in on is the art car.
00:10:42So, it's blue and white, so it's very distinctive.
00:10:45Not in the golf livery at all.
00:10:47Yeah, thank you for that, Carlton.
00:10:48That's very helpful.
00:10:49What have you noticed, Damien?
00:10:53No, the Bergmeister car just went past.
00:10:55He's in third place at the moment.
00:10:57Right, the number 91.
00:10:58They're looking for the number 92.
00:11:00Mark Lieb, who's leading ahead of Darren Turner.
00:11:04There's the 74 car on board with it.
00:11:07Fantastic sound.
00:11:08Do you have a listen?
00:11:08Lovely.
00:11:18I was hoping for a little bit more of that.
00:11:20I'm desperate for a Corvette.
00:11:22The V8 thump.
00:11:23Ah, fantastic.
00:11:24As opposed to the Vipers...
00:11:26The Vipers Vita Noc.
00:11:29Dog, dog, dog, dog, dog, dog.
00:11:31If you take 4,600 RPM...
00:11:34Take the exhaust off your Jaguar.
00:11:36Yeah, it could do, yes.
00:11:38Yeah, I'm quite a big guy,
00:11:40and I would love to get into a sport.
00:11:44I used to have an Elise, of course.
00:11:45I fold myself into that.
00:11:47But they accommodate the larger gentlemen.
00:11:49There we go.
00:11:51We're taking 4 for cracking up.
00:11:54Look, I eat the same bacon sandwiches as you.
00:11:56You just do more exercise, clearly.
00:11:57Milner dives into the pits.
00:11:59Magnussen doesn't,
00:12:00and so Magnussen goes ahead of Milner
00:12:01in the Corvette battle.
00:12:04Wow, this is fantastic.
00:12:06We have, yes, Milner heading Magnussen.
00:12:10Milner coming into the pits, actually,
00:12:11at the moment,
00:12:12so Magnussen will probably get that spot back.
00:12:15He is, however, a lap down.
00:12:17No, he's a lap down.
00:12:17He can't do it, yes.
00:12:18Yep.
00:12:18Forgive me.
00:12:19Here's his chance to unlap himself,
00:12:21but Magnussen, of course,
00:12:23still owes a pit stop.
00:12:25We'll be taking a commercial break
00:12:28in just a few moments' time
00:12:30as I believe somebody's just walked by us
00:12:33and lit a cigar off by this morning.
00:12:35We haven't at the moment got the...
00:12:38Where are the Vipers?
00:12:40Just looking for those...
00:12:41Vipers, they're starting to stack up behind now.
00:12:44And we've got them in Dominic Firenbacher,
00:12:49who's a good friend of Alex Simonson.
00:12:51So the Vipers aren't...
00:12:52Yeah, the Vipers are running at the moment
00:12:55in eighth and ninth in class,
00:12:57so they're still there.
00:12:58That's the great thing, Damon.
00:12:59They may not have the speed of the American cars,
00:13:01the Corvettes and the Vipers,
00:13:02but they're there,
00:13:03and they're solid,
00:13:04and they're reliable.
00:13:04To be honest, you know,
00:13:05this team has only been going
00:13:07about 12 months or a little more,
00:13:09so I think they're doing an astonishing job,
00:13:12especially in the ALMS.
00:13:13But I think, you know,
00:13:14their objective probably coming here
00:13:16is probably to finish the race, I'd say.
00:13:19Yeah, they're real crowd-pleasers,
00:13:21both the Corvettes and the Vipers.
00:13:22Everyone loves them.
00:13:23We're going to take a break.
00:13:24We'll be back here live at Le Mans
00:13:26as we get to 10.45.
00:16:08a podium place,
00:16:10but they have been dominating GT
00:16:11over the last few hours
00:16:13since they started to sandwich
00:16:15the Aston Martin of Darren Turner,
00:16:18who's in that second-place car at the moment,
00:16:20and Jörg Bergmeister's right behind him.
00:16:23Those three cars all on the same lap, 257,
00:16:27and we have got, what, four and a bit hours of racing to go.
00:16:31Damon, if you're in the middle of that GT battle,
00:16:33you know there's so long to go still.
00:16:34How would you be coping with it?
00:16:36Well, you know, it's four hours, 13 minutes, of course,
00:16:39but it's a sprint.
00:16:40You know, it's been, there's almost been 20 hours now,
00:16:43and it's been a sprint, but GT never fails to excite, does it?
00:16:47And we're in for a fantastic battle here,
00:16:50I would imagine.
00:16:52Darren Turner has his blinkers on,
00:16:54and he's just going to hone in, I'd say, on Mark Lieb.
00:16:57If he was, well, he pulled a couple of seconds on him
00:17:00in the last lap, he's now got it down to nine seconds.
00:17:02It's unbelievable, 9.006.
00:17:05It was as wide as 20 seconds, not that long ago.
00:17:07Darren Turner is on absolute mission at the moment.
00:17:11Not sure how light his fuel load is,
00:17:13whether he's got another stop,
00:17:14but we'll be hooking up with that in just a moment.
00:17:17No, he's just got into that car not very long ago.
00:17:19Wow, so he's tanked up and tanking it.
00:17:23So Malicelli really on a mission.
00:17:26Look at this man's lines, that's in the 51 Ferrari.
00:17:29He's been told, you've got to catch up.
00:17:31Those cars ahead of you, those Aston Martins,
00:17:33the Ferrari of Kobayashi and the Porsches,
00:17:36and just do the job.
00:17:38Good God, shadows, sunshine.
00:17:39Can you believe it?
00:17:41No, I can't.
00:17:42I think this must be from last year.
00:17:46Yeah, that's funny.
00:17:47That's an overhead shot from a helicopter there,
00:17:49an aerial shot, I should say.
00:17:51And it looks like we've got a bit of sun.
00:17:53I haven't seen that for the whole weekend.
00:17:55It's remarkable.
00:17:56That is our first glimpse of detailed shadowing
00:18:00that we've had all weekend.
00:18:02Kobayashi, yeah, you heard about flat light.
00:18:05We've had plenty of it.
00:18:07And, yes, just to continue the alliteration,
00:18:10we've had plenty of flat tyres as well.
00:18:11Punches were dogging us.
00:18:13I assume it was down to some of the kerb contact that we had.
00:18:19They've actually replaced a number of the kerb ripples,
00:18:23if that makes sense.
00:18:24They are removable because they do degrade over time.
00:18:27So they take those raised concrete sections
00:18:29and replace them with new ones
00:18:31as opposed to just having to resurface the road.
00:18:33Yeah, well, there's a number of...
00:18:34There's a couple of different ways of getting a puncture.
00:18:36I suppose there's any number of ways,
00:18:37but, you know, two, one that you've just mentioned,
00:18:41kerbs, going over the top of kerbs,
00:18:43over the back of them,
00:18:44if they have a leading edge, a 90-degree angle.
00:18:47If it's sharp, there could be little bolts
00:18:49to hold sleeping policemen.
00:18:53That could have an effect,
00:18:54so it could actually rip the tyre.
00:18:55And the other obvious one, then,
00:18:57is just debris from carbon fibre.
00:19:01Pieces that have been...
00:19:03Shards, I should say,
00:19:04that have been dissipated in crashes.
00:19:06Broly's furled,
00:19:07and they're all going to start warming up
00:19:09and revealing their T-shirts
00:19:10that have been the same ones all week,
00:19:12I'll be bound, a lot of the campus.
00:19:14So it'll be a fruity smell
00:19:17that the drivers in the open cockpit's come by.
00:19:19Fuel light, boss.
00:19:20Copy.
00:19:21Box this lap, box this lap.
00:19:23Fuel only.
00:19:25There we are.
00:19:25Fuel only for Marcel Fasler in the number one car.
00:19:29Yes, unlike Alan McNish,
00:19:31when he made his stop in the number two car,
00:19:32handed over to Luat Duval,
00:19:34of course, what he had to do, Damien,
00:19:35is take the rain tires that he's on off
00:19:37and go back onto slicks.
00:19:39We're just reading here now
00:19:40that he's either on slicks or uncut inters.
00:19:42Why would he go onto inters?
00:19:43It's dry now.
00:19:45Well, I don't even understand why,
00:19:46and we said at the time, actually,
00:19:48that they must have some fantastic information
00:19:50to show that it's going to be very wet.
00:19:53And there was some sort of
00:19:54anonymous clouds over there,
00:19:55really black, coming this way,
00:19:57but it blew over.
00:19:59It was a little bit wet,
00:20:00but not wet enough.
00:20:02In fact, I wouldn't even say wet,
00:20:04any wetter than the beginning of the race
00:20:05when they were all on slicks.
00:20:07So I think the safety car period
00:20:09helped them there big time
00:20:11because I think that was a wrong choice,
00:20:13a wrong call.
00:20:15Through the,
00:20:16into the Porsche curves,
00:20:18rather, there's a number three car.
00:20:19That is the car of Luca Degrassi.
00:20:21It's three laps down on the lead Audi of Duval,
00:20:26and it's two laps down on Stefan,
00:20:28one lap down on the two Toyotas,
00:20:30Stefan Sarrazan and Nakajima.
00:20:33Degrassi, then Marcel Fassler
00:20:34coming back from a long, long delay.
00:20:37They lost 12 laps last night,
00:20:39changing the sensor on the crankshaft.
00:20:43And then Danny Watts,
00:20:44we've seen some slow-mo stuff of Danny Watts
00:20:46really, really pushing.
00:20:48Danny in his day
00:20:49is one of the fastest sports car drivers ever.
00:20:52Why he has not been picked up
00:20:54by Audi or Toyotria,
00:20:56I don't know,
00:20:56but I'm biased
00:20:57because he comes from my village, Thornburg.
00:20:59Yeah, Danny's a guy
00:21:00that I've raced against,
00:21:02for sure, a fantastic driver.
00:21:04There's lots of fantastic drivers out there.
00:21:06And as one guy said to me one time,
00:21:09fortune favours few.
00:21:11So not all of us can have a works drive.
00:21:14Yes, and the two brewers favours Thornburg.
00:21:16Wow.
00:21:17Hello, Andy, from Carton and Mark.
00:21:20Keep the hooky on tap.
00:21:22Thank you very much.
00:21:24Let's hope there's one waiting for us
00:21:26behind the bar as we speak.
00:21:28What an emergency we have.
00:21:30The number one car,
00:21:33Marcel Fassler,
00:21:35in for his regular quickie at this point.
00:21:38And we still look at Toyota running two and three at the moment.
00:21:43So it's been a strong performance by them.
00:21:45Mark, much stronger than perhaps they believed
00:21:48when this race began.
00:21:49Yes, I think you're absolutely right.
00:21:51And they made the right tyre choice early in the race
00:21:54when conditions are very tricky.
00:21:55As we were told by Michelin last night,
00:21:57their race director was in here
00:21:59giving us the lowdown on all that.
00:22:02And, I mean, conditions have changed.
00:22:04One minute, it's wet, it's moist, it's damp, it's dry, it's moist again.
00:22:08And it's so hard to call, Damien,
00:22:11particularly for the car engineer.
00:22:14Well, just for the viewers,
00:22:15if you've just joined us,
00:22:17what happened at the start of the race
00:22:19was that Toyota chose a different slick tyre.
00:22:23It operated at a lower temperature
00:22:25than the normal one.
00:22:28They have two slick tyres available here.
00:22:31They're both different temperature operated.
00:22:34And so it's fascinating to see, actually,
00:22:37that we haven't seen that replicated
00:22:38any time since that.
00:22:40So they haven't, I mean, obviously,
00:22:42I'd say during the night,
00:22:43perhaps they've used the lower temperature tyre.
00:22:46I'm not sure.
00:22:47So at the time, at the start,
00:22:48it was the moist-half tyre.
00:22:50It was definitely the tyre to have at the time.
00:22:53But, you know, like I say,
00:22:54it's been moist since.
00:22:55It's been wet since.
00:22:56But we haven't seen Toyota
00:22:59with that advantage since that.
00:23:01If you're wondering what that slapping sound was,
00:23:03it was my open hand hitting my forehead
00:23:05after Mark Cole's latest gag.
00:23:06Right, well, we're just looking at P2 again.
00:23:08Martin Ploughman, Alex Brundle,
00:23:10both in those Morgans.
00:23:13Those two Morgans.
00:23:14It's 36, 36 to Toyota.
00:23:1936 watt.
00:23:21It's 35 seconds on our clock,
00:23:23so that's about right.
00:23:24Just looking at P2,
00:23:25the two Morgans that are running up front,
00:23:27both Nissan engine-powered,
00:23:29so is the fourth car.
00:23:31But those Nissans are not by Areca or Nismo.
00:23:35They are built by Zytec.
00:23:37And John Manchester from Zytec
00:23:39has just come into the cabin.
00:23:40Damon, if you could just...
00:23:42or Carlton, just...
00:23:43let John have the headset.
00:23:49John, come and take a seat,
00:23:51and we'll plug you in.
00:23:53It's a major operation.
00:23:54John, good morning.
00:23:55How are you?
00:23:56How are you?
00:23:57Never looked better.
00:23:58And thank you, Ian Wagstaff,
00:24:00Zytec's PR man,
00:24:01for bringing you along.
00:24:02Yeah, for quite a long time,
00:24:05you've had the 35, 24, and 42 cars
00:24:08potentially on the podium.
00:24:10Romain Rustinov just put himself
00:24:12between at the moment,
00:24:13but am I correct?
00:24:15Zytec obviously originally took
00:24:17the Nissan Super GT engine.
00:24:20You did all the work for it
00:24:21for endurance racing for LMP2.
00:24:23Yeah.
00:24:24But when Areca decided
00:24:25they were going to provide cars,
00:24:27they decided to do their own engines
00:24:29based on the same engine.
00:24:31Yeah, initially we started the concept
00:24:32with Nismo late 2010,
00:24:36and we started the development program then
00:24:38with them to create the Super GT engine
00:24:40into the LMP2 engine.
00:24:43And for the first year in 2011,
00:24:45we supplied all of those engines,
00:24:48and then 2012,
00:24:49Areca started to build their own engines.
00:24:51But a lot of the parts within the engines
00:24:52are still manufactured by Zytec.
00:24:54Fine, so you're still a supplier,
00:24:55so you can practically claim
00:24:57you have a part in all 15 Nissan engines.
00:25:00Let's take to the word, I guess, yeah.
00:25:01But of course, what's really interesting
00:25:02is the 42 car,
00:25:04because it's a Zytec Zytec Nissan.
00:25:05Indeed.
00:25:06Yeah, the cars have been going well.
00:25:08Both Zytecs were going well
00:25:09until, unfortunately,
00:25:11the Jota car, the Car 38,
00:25:13had a suspension problem,
00:25:14which has knocked it back a bit.
00:25:15But they've got that fixed.
00:25:16The guys have done a great job.
00:25:17About six laps, I think,
00:25:18we've lost,
00:25:19and that's back up there again.
00:25:20So, still in the running,
00:25:22and they're still going well.
00:25:22Yeah, I'm really pleased.
00:25:23You won two at the moment,
00:25:24of course, with those engines.
00:25:26And you have a good relationship
00:25:28with Jack Nicolet, obviously,
00:25:29and with Econ.
00:25:30Yeah, I think we've got a,
00:25:31we established a good relationship last year.
00:25:33We started working with Oak
00:25:34for the first time,
00:25:35and I think we've got
00:25:35a very good sort of relationship going,
00:25:38and they enjoy what we do,
00:25:40and we enjoy what they do.
00:25:41And I guess,
00:25:41if he has a British name on the car,
00:25:43he wanted a British engine,
00:25:44even though it might have
00:25:45Japanese oranges.
00:25:46Well, maybe, yeah.
00:25:47John, we're going to take a quick break,
00:25:48but stay with us,
00:25:49because we're going to ask you
00:25:51more about this,
00:25:51and we're going to ask you
00:25:52maybe about the future,
00:25:53LMP1, does that beckon?
00:25:55Back in a moment.
00:25:55Okay.
00:26:23LMP1, does that beckon?
00:26:26No, we're going to ask you
00:26:27to get there.
00:26:28Okay.
00:26:28We're going to ask you
00:26:28to get the boat down.
00:26:29Let's go.
00:26:31We'll ask you
00:26:31if we can.
00:26:32Let's go.
00:26:33Let's go.
00:26:33Let's go.
00:26:35Let's go.
00:30:36So, you know, you just bring some of that over to running it at Le Mans.
00:30:40And, okay, we've only got seven engines, but a lot of the same principles are applied.
00:30:44So we've got a team of about 18 engineers here looking after all of the engines throughout the course of the week.
00:30:49Yeah, and I don't want any favoritism, but of all the drivers you're running this weekend, who's impressed you most?
00:30:54I think Ross has done a good job.
00:31:24Yeah, Zytec, Nissan Zytec, and I mean, we've been watching that car, obviously, because of the PlayStation element, and Jan Mardinbrough has impressed us so much in the commentary box.
00:31:34I think, yeah, I think, yeah, I think, yeah, I think, yeah, I think, yeah, I think, yeah, I think they've done very, very well, indeed.
00:31:40Yeah.
00:31:41Now, Ian Wagstaff, who does your PR for you, he and I are both on the panel of the Guild of Motoring Writers, Young Driver of the Year Award every year.
00:31:48And certainly, I think, a couple of the drivers here today will be near the top of our list.
00:31:52And Jan Mardinbrough will be one of them.
00:31:54Indeed, I think there's some good candidates there, yeah, absolutely.
00:31:56John Manchester, thank you very much.
00:31:58You're very welcome.
00:31:59We'll let you get back to all your cars, all your engines.
00:32:01You've got a lot of work on still, and we've still got, what, three hours, 57 to go.
00:32:05Indeed.
00:32:06Thank you very much.
00:32:06Cheers, Mark.
00:32:07Bye-bye.
00:32:07So, Audi, then, watching progress of the number two car, Loac Duval on board.
00:32:27He won't be staying on that car till the end, despite the fact he's French, because he will run out of hours, only four hours in any six.
00:32:34And he has been in that car now since about 30 minutes ago.
00:32:39So, there will be a final change.
00:32:41Carlton suggesting that Tom Christensen would be the obvious candidate.
00:32:46He's a Danish driver, and what better tribute for a Danish driver to win Le Mans for a ninth year?
00:32:51Yeah, double tribute, actually, because not only winning for his ninth year, but it would be such a moving and fitting tribute to his fellow countryman, Alan Simonson,
00:33:02who, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries early in this race.
00:33:07Well, look at this, guys, the number 13 car.
00:33:09This is the car that we wondered would we ever see again.
00:33:13So much damage at the front.
00:33:15It's wheeled out of the garage.
00:33:17It's an absolute credit to them, actually.
00:33:19It's running in 32nd place.
00:33:22As we speak, they're going to finish.
00:33:24And that lovely red, gold, and black Rebellion livery is back on course.
00:33:32A mix between the JPS and the gold leaf livery of old.
00:33:36Yes.
00:33:36It's quite spectacular.
00:33:38And it's still got the Lotus badging on it, despite the fact that there is no Lotus connection really anymore on that car.
00:33:45But that number 13 car, Andrea Bellicci put that in the wall, didn't he?
00:33:49And Matthias Besch and Kung Fu Cheng, one of those two surely will have taken it over, because Bellicci was being treated by the doctor.
00:33:56Here we go.
00:33:57The lead car coming in, and this will be the changeover.
00:34:00And I cannot believe that Tom Christensen is not going to get in this car.
00:34:04Well, they've only just changed.
00:34:05At some point, yeah, exactly.
00:34:06Well, is he going to come out and...
00:34:09I think Barack will stay in for one or two more hours, and then Tom will take over for the final two.
00:34:15There we are.
00:34:17I think.
00:34:17Yes.
00:34:18I'm not calling the shots, though.
00:34:20Yes, exactly.
00:34:21Well, they've got enough of a cushion to actually make that second stop, so why not?
00:34:25Have they done 10 laps coming back to that, do you know, guys?
00:34:30Not sure, actually, right now in that last lap.
00:34:32We don't have Jeremy Shaw, the human computer here.
00:34:36Yeah, I think to scratch up.
00:34:37And look how perverse the sun is out again here, but it's, we've just been told, drizzling on the far side of the circuit, so...
00:34:44Amazing.
00:34:44And that's what we were saying about having a compromised choice when you have such a big circuit here.
00:34:49It's not just about setup, whether you go for downforce or out-and-out speed, or get yourself through those technical sections or go for the faster sections.
00:34:57It's about what rubber you wear and, indeed, how your contact patch actually matches the surface here, which is so difficult to read, because it's vast, isn't it?
00:35:07Well, you just saw the difference.
00:35:08I mean, the tyres are just so, so important, and, you know, I keep alluding to it, but the Toyotas, the advantage they had at the start, just because they were on another slick that operated at a lower temperature.
00:35:21Both the Audis and Toyotas, incidentally, running Michelin tyres, but fantastic, you know, just a fantastic choice by Toyota at the beginning, but, yeah, they didn't do that since.
00:35:34That's the number eight car of Sarazan we're watching at the moment, but the number seven car, we've just been told, no problem, don't worry, don't panic, but Pascal Vassarant of Toyota has said car seven is definitely under pressure from Degrassi and the Audi,
00:35:49and the fight will be interesting to follow. We're currently unable to match Trelia's speed, but even as he said that, the gap was 19 seconds, it's just opened up to 20, so he's gained a second on that last lap, and, my goodness gracious, who is this?
00:36:03Someone from Status, and it's Johnny Molan.
00:36:07Johnny, hi. Great to have you back in the box. You were working here last year, now you've become honest again in your driving.
00:36:14Yes, nice to be back, I can see you've got as great a view as always here, that's fantastic, and it's nice to sort of walk in and see friendly faces.
00:36:24Carlton and I spent many hours last year keeping ourselves amused.
00:36:28Well, you drank all my scotch, I know.
00:36:30Easy.
00:36:32And so, no, it's obviously unfortunate circumstances that sort of bring me back in here, but, yeah, it's nice to see you.
00:36:3819, 19, 19, 19, p.n.u.
00:36:41Yeah, just, uh...
00:36:43Well, Sarazan saying he's a bit happier now, he's beginning to get some pace again.
00:36:54We're going to go for a commercial break, and when we come back, we're going to have a chat with Johnny about how his race went with the HVM status.
00:37:00canadian entry this year showing of jonathan herchey and tony burgess of course the canadian
00:37:05and uh johnny having uh i think his eighth le mans 24 hours have i got that right anyway
00:37:10johnny back in a moment with you we'll just get these messages stay with us live on euro sports
00:37:15still three hours 50 to go
00:37:30so
00:38:00I don't know.
00:38:30I don't know.
00:39:00I don't know.
00:39:30I don't know.
00:40:00I don't know.
00:40:30A great race until 2.19 this morning.
00:40:33Yeah, well, it was character-building week, I have to say.
00:40:37Funnily enough, I was talking to Liz in the pit lane about it, and the time that sets our qualifying time is actually the very first flying lap that I did in official practice, which is unheard of for that to be actually the quickest time that you set in the two practice days.
00:40:51But as I'm sure you've been talking about a lot of the race, the number of red flags in practice and the weather was just crazy.
00:41:00And so we've moved forward.
00:41:02We did a good first two hours, got up into the sort of top ten in LMP2, and then dropped back being caught out by the wrong tyres at the wrong time of the conditions, and we were coming back up again.
00:41:11I'm not saying we would have finished on the podium, because I think that's highly unlikely, but I think we would have got into the top eight, maybe top six by the finish, the way we were going.
00:41:19And just very unfortunate that Tony had a really nasty accident in the Porsche curves.
00:41:25He's got taken to hospital, but he's apparently absolutely fine and just being kept in until midday today for observation.
00:41:33Been a very damaging race throughout, hasn't it?
00:41:35And I mean, as much as anything to the guardrails here.
00:41:38What's your feelings on that, Johnny?
00:41:40Well, it's funny you should say that, because obviously, you know, I'm not, you know, I love Le Mans, but Le Mans has been very cruel, I think, this particular one.
00:41:48And I won't be looking back fondly, and this isn't just because of Tony, but obviously what happened with Alan Simonson, I won't be looking back at all fondly on this race.
00:41:56And it's, you know, I'm not portioning blame to anyone or anything, but it's just, when things like that go wrong, it's horrific.
00:42:03And as Liz will confirm, I mean, this is, sports car racing is a family.
00:42:07It's one big family, isn't it?
00:42:09The World Sports Car Championship Le Mans, we're all friends, everyone knows each other, and when one person gets hurt, everybody suffers.
00:42:16No, it is very, very difficult, and I think it's hard for everyone when something like that happens on the track that you were driving on in a circuit that everyone loves and that Alan loved.
00:42:26And I think it's sort of, I think they made the right decision to just say, right, we're going to pull ourselves together and try and win it for him, because that's what he would have wanted.
00:42:33And I'm sure you would agree with that.
00:42:36Yeah, I mean, apparently I heard that his family said, you know, please go out and win it for him.
00:42:42So, you know, quite clearly, I must have made a very difficult decision to take.
00:42:45I wouldn't want to be in their shoes, and it's terrible.
00:42:48And I found out literally after I did a triple stint at the start of the race to start it, and obviously I saw the accident, and I knew it was pretty bad from the, you know, everything was there.
00:42:58But you never think it's that bad.
00:43:02But I found out when I got out of the car, and it's funny at that point, you know, obviously you try not to think about it because you're in the race, and you just can't allow yourself to get to.
00:43:13And then the minute that we were out of the race, albeit that was, I don't know, what, nearly 12 hours later, and finally the first thing that I started thinking about was that.
00:43:21So it's awful, and my heart goes out to his family and everybody there, all his friends.
00:43:27As do all of ours, and that's the thing.
00:43:30HVM, then, for status.
00:43:33Will this program continue in the World Endurance Championship after this race?
00:43:37I believe that their plan is to continue in the European Le Mans series and also do selective WEC rounds and maybe even Petit Le Mans at the end of the year.
00:43:43But as always, these plans are fluid, as you know, in motorsport.
00:43:47My deal with them is only for Le Mans.
00:43:49So I was only ever brought in to sort of help them at Le Mans.
00:43:53And then I'm actually continuing with my Ram Racing European Le Mans series with the Ferrari and also doing selected LMP1 races.
00:44:04In fact, I'm flying on Wednesday to Road Atlanta.
00:44:06I got a two-day test in the Dyson LMP1 car.
00:44:10In fact, Tony was going to be there as well, but I suspect he may not be there now, seeing he's obviously got a bit of a concussion.
00:44:16But, yeah.
00:44:17Yeah, very good point.
00:44:19Yeah, it always helps if you disconnect the fuel hose before you try and pull out the port lane.
00:44:23Certainly, yes.
00:44:24Yeah.
00:44:24Whoa.
00:44:25Well done to stop them.
00:44:26Do you remember the old days in Group C with the fuel churns on the side?
00:44:30They'd go trundling up the pit lane and then the fuel churn would fall off.
00:44:33DTM as well, that happened.
00:44:35Yes.
00:44:36Didn't they get done for an...
00:44:37Oh, my goodness.
00:44:38I was just about to say, didn't they get done for an unsafe release already?
00:44:42Oh, my God.
00:44:43I was just saying it, and then that happened.
00:44:46So, I think you can safely say that that car will be taking probably a very long penalty.
00:44:51Oh, dear.
00:44:51Oh, my goodness.
00:44:52That's such a shame.
00:44:53That was an Italian pit stop extraordinaire.
00:44:55But he was holding him then.
00:44:56I don't understand, because he was holding him.
00:44:58And he kept trying to go.
00:44:59And if he'd gone when he was going to go, he would have been out of the way.
00:45:01But he held him, held him, held him.
00:45:03I've noticed that sometimes you have mechanics that are holding you don't actually judge very well the cars that are coming.
00:45:07Because when you're pulling out, you can actually get out pretty quickly.
00:45:10So, you can start pulling away when they're still 15 metres away from you.
00:45:14But, yeah, it's unfortunate.
00:45:15Oh, my goodness.
00:45:16And it's not something you'd expect to see at Le Mans, although I've actually had a collision in pit lane at Le Mans, the same sort of thing.
00:45:21I had somebody drive into the side of me being released early, and you're sitting there thinking, what's going on?
00:45:25It's Le Mans.
00:45:26This shouldn't happen.
00:45:27There we go.
00:45:28It still does.
00:45:28Well, there you go.
00:45:29Pit lane release of car 51 under investigation.
00:45:32So, I don't think there's any doubt that that is going to be unsafe release, and there will be a penalty.
00:45:37I think they're listening to you on Eurosport, Johnny.
00:45:38They've picked up immediately.
00:45:41So, well done, Johnny.
00:45:42Well, thank you very much for coming on and having a chat with us.
00:45:44It's good to be here, and I must admit, thank you.
00:45:47Can I just say thank you to everyone that's tweeted saying they wanted me to get down here and say hello and everything,
00:45:52and being very, very complimentary about what I did last year.
00:45:55So, anyone that's listening, thank you very much indeed.
00:45:57Any personal shout-outs you want to make?
00:46:01Not really.
00:46:02Not really.
00:46:02Good.
00:46:03You've done it all.
00:46:03I think everyone that knows me knows that I'm about to go home.
00:46:07Okay.
00:46:08Well, have a safe journey.
00:46:09And good luck for the rest of the race to everybody, and I hope it goes well and safely.
00:46:14It's at the end.
00:46:15Is it true you pedal cycling the whole way home?
00:46:17Absolutely.
00:46:18I'm not Bob Wannick.
00:46:22Hitchhiking, surely.
00:46:23Johnny Mowlam, thank you very much for being with us.
00:46:26Thanks, Johnny.
00:46:26All the best.
00:46:28Well, Martin Haven is back down from his ivory tower, or whatever, wherever he's been.
00:46:33And Martin looking very spruce now.
00:46:37Pink shirt.
00:46:38All terribly impressed.
00:46:40And Liz, under four hours to go now.
00:46:46Three hours, 43.
00:46:47And this is probably the worst time for the mechanics.
00:46:50Just having...
00:46:50Oh, look at that.
00:46:51That was a hard hit, actually, wasn't it?
00:46:53Just as he came in.
00:46:53Just ridiculous.
00:46:54Oh, my goodness.
00:46:56I hope that Jacques Nicolet car hasn't suffered too much damage from that.
00:46:59Or, indeed, the Ferrari at the front.
00:47:01Oh, he's going out now.
00:47:02So, hopefully, that's been all right.
00:47:04Well, there was nothing about that that wasn't Fred Karno's army.
00:47:07As you say, the mechanic was holding him, holding him, holding him, holding him, waiting
00:47:11for the perfect moment to release him right into the side.
00:47:14And, of course, the driver is blind, cannot see in the mirrors with a hands device, cannot
00:47:18turn his head, has to absolutely rely, like a Formula One driver, on the guy releasing
00:47:23him, who, as Johnny said, plainly had no idea exactly what he was doing.
00:47:27And, of course, that car is covered in stop signs.
00:47:30So, why didn't he pay attention?
00:47:32Yeah, it's definitely bright.
00:47:34Maybe he only saw the give way.
00:47:36And the other thing, of course, is it has torn their fuel rig to pieces, and we're not
00:47:40at the last pit stop.
00:47:41We've got another 3 hours 45 to go.
00:47:43They're going to need at least two more stops.
00:47:45It rips the hose clear off and took the guy who was trying to fuel the car with it.
00:47:51Why the driver thought he was good to go, Lord only knows, because he was still hooked
00:47:55up to the umbilical cord.
00:47:57It may have just been a breakdown of communication.
00:47:59It might have been we didn't see all of it.
00:48:01It may have been that, you know, one of the mechanics mistakenly released him without thinking
00:48:07the guy had pulled it off yet.
00:48:08I don't know.
00:48:08We didn't see it, unfortunately.
00:48:10But I can say, having been down in the pits, that there's a lot of nervous people in the
00:48:14Toyota garage.
00:48:15They are very much focused on the job right now.
00:48:19Nobody wants to come and talk to us.
00:48:21They're just very, very focused.
00:48:23And I think they know there's a possibility that if Audi slips up at all, they could take
00:48:28this race.
00:48:28But they have to be completely focused on the job in order to do it.
00:48:31I mean, they've still got two cars running after all this time.
00:48:36It's incredible.
00:48:37It's fantastic.
00:48:38It's what we always hoped for.
00:48:39We wanted them to stay at the front and have a fight, albeit, you know, there's a significant
00:48:44lead from the Audi number two car, but not as much as we thought there would be.
00:48:49Still only 11 retirements.
00:48:51And the record of the smallest number of retirements for any Le Mans 24-hour race is 16, apart from
00:48:59the first ever race in 1923, when only three cars retired.
00:49:02But that, again, slightly different.
00:49:04So, record number of safety cars.
00:49:07Incidentally, time lost to safety cars tied to the minute with the all-time record.
00:49:13Oh, really?
00:49:14That was four hours 53.
00:49:16Four hours 53 minutes is how much we've lost behind safety cars so far in this race.
00:49:21Right.
00:49:21A little bit of sun out at the moment.
00:49:24A few dark clouds around as well.
00:49:26It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that we're going to have all sorts of records that
00:49:30aren't really the kind that you want in one race.
00:49:32So, Daniel Passner will, no doubt, so he gets a clean rest of race, put out a sign saying
00:49:37any car that crashes will be excluded from now on.
00:49:40Yeah.
00:49:41It just ought to be a sign on the screen from race control permanently scrolling along.
00:49:44Please remember, avoid crashing at all costs.
00:49:47Yeah.
00:49:49Easier said than done.
00:49:50You know, it is a race, and it does underline that these cars are being driven absolutely
00:49:56at their physical limit at all times.
00:50:00They're not within 60 or 70 percent.
00:50:02They're not going round at a delta time to preserve their tyres.
00:50:05Preserving their tyres is the very last thing they're doing.
00:50:08They are flailing them as hard as they can.
00:50:11And every other part of the car, this is all-out sprint racing.
00:50:16This is Formula One qualifying for a day and a night.
00:50:19Driver change for the number eight car.
00:50:20That's Anthony Davidson getting in, replacing Stefan Saracen, who's just done a very long
00:50:25stint in that car.
00:50:26And like I say, I think Toyota is 100 percent focused on the job ahead.
00:50:30That's all they're thinking about.
00:50:32The boys on the pit wall, the technical director, they're completely glued to the screens.
00:50:37They don't even want to turn around, let alone do anything else.
00:50:40So I think they're just praying that something will come their way.
00:50:43More black sky.
00:50:44In ten minutes, there's some rain coming.
00:50:46I'll keep you updated.
00:50:48That is Howden Haynes telling the number three Audi, more rain on the way.
00:50:54Not what Oli Jarvis will want to hear.
00:50:56And if he's hearing that message, everyone else will be hearing that message from their weather
00:51:01services very soon.
00:51:02Toyota reckoned to have the best Meteo here at Le Mans and we've been following much of
00:51:09their Meteo advice and it's proved very, very good indeed, isn't it?
00:51:12But we saw for ourselves just before Howden said that, that those black clouds are building
00:51:17up again.
00:51:19Right, came down for an interview.
00:51:24Stefan Saracen, just coming out of the car.
00:51:27How was it out there?
00:51:28It's okay.
00:51:29It was a very difficult stint because rain came and it was full wet on the slick.
00:51:34So we managed almost well and after safety car came for the crash.
00:51:41So we did many laps under safety car and it was better for security point of view also.
00:51:46Nothing special.
00:51:47We keep pushing, keep pushing, but Audi are a bit quicker than us.
00:51:51So we have nothing to do.
00:51:52Just don't give up.
00:51:54So what is the plan until the end now?
00:51:56Antoine is going 100%, Seb at the end, I hope.
00:52:02And I hope we finish very well the race.
00:52:05Thank you very much.
00:52:06Liz, 110% to the end.
00:52:08I think they have to.
00:52:09I mean, why not?
00:52:10At the end of the day, I think if Toyota backed off for some reason, they'd always wonder what
00:52:15I think now they have to be sprinting.
00:52:18Like you said before, it is like qualifying now for these guys.
00:52:20But difficult conditions.
00:52:22We can see the clouds here.
00:52:23They're saying rain in 10 more minutes.
00:52:25And I believe it.
00:52:26I was thinking that when I was out on the pit wall.
00:52:28I was saying to my camera guy, going, the rain's coming back.
00:52:30You can feel the wind.
00:52:32It's going to be a tricky end of this race.
00:52:34You can feel the temperature drop.
00:52:36The wind picks up.
00:52:37You know, it's got all the classic hallmarks.
00:52:40Another clinical stop produced by the Toyota team.
00:52:45And their second car is on pit road.
00:52:47We will have a small stop ourselves.
00:53:04And their second car is on pit road.
00:53:34And their second car is on pit road.
00:54:04And their second car is on pit road.
00:54:34And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:36And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:37And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:38And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:39And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:40And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:41And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:42And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:43And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:44And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:45And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:46And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:47And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:48And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:49And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:50And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:51And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:52And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:53And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:54And their third car is on pit road.
00:54:55Oh, my God.
00:55:25Back to Eurosport's live coverage of the 2013 Le Mans 24 hours.
00:55:29Kit-Kat break here in the studio.
00:55:31Martin Haven, Liz Halliday, and in about another two fingers,
00:55:35Mark Cole will join us again as we continue counting down the final four hours
00:55:40of what has been, in all ways, a very strange and bizarre race.
00:55:48Look at the sky overhead, Liz Halliday.
00:55:49There's a little peak of blue.
00:55:51There's grey.
00:55:52There's heavy leaden clouds.
00:55:54There is more rain in the air.
00:55:56Yet more rain in the air.
00:55:58And it is...
00:55:59Box this lap.
00:56:00Box this lap.
00:56:01Full service.
00:56:02Full service.
00:56:04That's awesome.
00:56:04Now you hear that there.
00:56:05Full service there for the number one car.
00:56:07Andre Loderer is planning to get into that car.
00:56:09We just saw him warming up, flexing his hands,
00:56:12and just getting himself prepared for a final push towards the end
00:56:15to try and catch up a bit more.
00:56:17Oh, no.
00:56:18There's a Corvette in the...
00:56:20Oh, no, it's a Ferrari.
00:56:21It's a BMW.
00:56:22Yeah.
00:56:22Saw that it was yellow and assumed...
00:56:24125 years.
00:56:26Looks like it's going to make it back out.
00:56:27Yellow flag, fittingly.
00:56:29Nah, it's going on.
00:56:29For the EJ&W Ferrari.
00:56:31That was wrecked heavily early on, wasn't it, as well?
00:56:33That will spread a lot of gravel and debris across the circuit.
00:56:36That's not good.
00:56:37Here comes the number one car.
00:56:38Yeah.
00:56:38Full service and a driver change.
00:56:41And when is the rain going to come?
00:56:43It's heavy wind outside.
00:56:44It's very, very cold.
00:56:46Much colder than we were earlier in the week.
00:56:49And a really thick headwind.
00:56:51So I think there is rain to come still.
00:56:53OK, here we go.
00:56:55Car's out of contention now, correct?
00:56:57Fifth place, several laps behind.
00:56:59So, what do you do?
00:57:00You've got to use him as your banker.
00:57:03Do you now, A, assume it's going to rain
00:57:06and put him on a super soft or a soft tyre
00:57:09to try and sit out the rain
00:57:11and hopefully climb up a little bit
00:57:13as if the others have to pit?
00:57:14Or, you can't put him on a wet tyre now.
00:57:18So he's gone on a non-grooved tyre.
00:57:20But Michelin's wet and very wet tyre are grooved.
00:57:24Their intermediate quote is a super soft tyre.
00:57:28Now, Audi were caught by Toyota early on in the race
00:57:31when it was greasy
00:57:32because they stayed on a hard daytime tyre
00:57:35and Toyota started on a soft nighttime tyre
00:57:37which worked better in the greasy conditions
00:57:40but then dropped off.
00:57:42What are they going to do?
00:57:43What are they going to use this car to do?
00:57:45That is the inter
00:57:46because that's the wider white band on that tyre.
00:57:49So they've gone super soft in case it rains.
00:57:51And I think that's clever.
00:57:52I think that's the outward decision.
00:57:54And also because they're due for a driver change anyway.
00:57:56He'll now drive to the end, Andre Lodge, or whatever else.
00:57:58So now the question comes is
00:58:01when, how, and why do you place your other cars
00:58:05number three and number two, the race leader?
00:58:08Because you've now got three different hands you can play.
00:58:12One of them might win.
00:58:15And the only one you can really go conservative with
00:58:18as rain is on our window in the commentary box.
00:58:20It's arrived all around the track.
00:58:22The only one you can go conservative with,
00:58:24follow the weather with,
00:58:25is the one that currently holds the lead, the number two car.
00:58:27And in that car, they were planning to have
00:58:29Benoit Trillier finish the race.
00:58:31That's what he said in the interview.
00:58:32So we'll have to keep our eyes open
00:58:34and see what they plan to do.
00:58:35But it is raining.
00:58:36This could change a lot of things.
00:58:39And that's a clever move for that number one car.
00:58:41If they've gone on the inters,
00:58:42that's exactly what they should be on.
00:58:43And of course, Lothra can report back to the team
00:58:45on how effectively it's working.
00:58:48Timing fell into their laps.
00:58:50I'm sure they've used that tyre
00:58:51at other greasy stages during the race.
00:58:54They didn't at the beginning.
00:58:55I'm sure they've got that infant...
00:58:57Information now.
00:58:58Sorry, I thought we were just about to hear a team radio.
00:59:01So Olly Jarvis in fourth place.
00:59:04Rain reported around the track of that.
00:59:07Yeah, well, we're getting some of it.
00:59:08They're getting some in the pit lane.
00:59:10And predominantly, the weather has come
00:59:12from Arnage, Indianapolis area.
00:59:14So what are we seeing here?
00:59:15Yeah, wipers are on.
00:59:16Water on the screen coming down to Indianapolis.
00:59:18Again, same area.
00:59:20This is the prevailing weather
00:59:21coming in from the Arnage area.
00:59:24It's just that light, misty rain
00:59:26that makes a circuit very, very greasy.
00:59:29A lot of the drivers I've been talking to have said,
00:59:32you know, it'd be easier if it was just wet or dry.
00:59:35But having this weird in-between sort of mixed conditions
00:59:39is actually the hardest conditions
00:59:40to drive any race car in.
00:59:42Look how much the Toyota is off the pace.
00:59:44That car should be leaning on itself
00:59:46as it comes through the Porsche curves.
00:59:48He was, what, 60% of race speed, if that, probably.
00:59:53And making sure that he wasn't getting on the curbs
00:59:55because they will be very slippery.
00:59:57We've seen a few cars get caught out by that.
00:59:59If you watch the lines they're taking now.
