00:00So the winners of the first event in Season 4 was New Zealand.
00:07The Australians looking to get back there.
00:08Of course, they are the three-time reigning and defending champions looking to make it four in a row here in SailGP.
00:15Here we go.
00:16You can see that optimum position on the start line and all the teams are slow here.
00:19There's not an awful lot of wind and the wind has rotated round to the right.
00:23It's coming more from the bottom left-hand corner of our screen.
00:26The crews would be hoping it was coming from the bottom of our screen to give them that 90-degree blast towards Mark 1.
00:32It looks really light here.
00:34Spain and Australia could be struggling on their timing.
00:36Can they accelerate?
00:38It's tricky, tricky conditions.
00:41Tom Stingsby, we're going to be late no matter what.
00:43They are late on board Australia.
00:45It's now a case of minimising the loss early.
00:47Denmark, they're going to be the ones on time at the line.
00:50But can any of the crews be foiling?
00:52If you can foil at the start, you're going to be very, very well positioned.
00:55Spain are well positioned, but they're late as well.
00:58Timing now.
00:58Here comes Denmark, winding it up to the line.
01:04Good start by Denmark, but they're not on the foils.
01:06Who can get the boat going first?
01:08Australia's fastest.
01:09Look at the Australian boat.
01:10Clear sky underneath.
01:11No, they fall into the wind shadow of the Danish boat and they fall off the foils.
01:16They maybe try to force that foil a bit hard.
01:20Reset for Australia.
01:21They're going to be out the back at Mark 1.
01:22How about Spain on the lower, the top of your screen?
01:26Spain have got the best angle and they're foiling.
01:28They're foiling on board the Spanish boat.
01:30Diego Bottin's got them going.
01:31He's going to have the fastest angle to Mark 1 from there.
01:34This could be a big lead early on in the race for the Spanish.
01:37Can they convert as the Danish are really struggling?
01:39Pressure is on the wing trimmers right now.
01:43Those big 29-metre wings.
01:46The Spanish just holding on to enough speed there to stay up on the foils.
01:5036 kilometres an hour.
01:52It is so marginal.
01:53Got to be careful with the wing here.
01:58Florian Trittle's got to be careful.
02:00Don't try and force it too hard on the wing trimmers.
02:02Denmark are foiling.
02:04Denmark foil now.
02:05The wind has rotated a long way.
02:07Early manoeuvre for Spain.
02:08Can they stay on the foils?
02:10That'll be the question.
02:11But I don't think this race, it's far, far from over here.
02:14As we see the two boats behind fall off the foils.
02:18Australia turning down.
02:19Spain try to foil jibe.
02:21No, they fall off the foils as they turn the boat.
02:24Can they get to 30?
02:26They're doing a nice job on Spain here.
02:28Can they foil again?
02:29It's close.
02:30Meanwhile, the Danish and Aussies have parked up.
02:33They are doing less than 10 kilometres an hour of boat speed.
02:37Look at the Spanish go, Todd.
02:39Up and foiling, but they're barely progressing down the course.
02:42They've got to be heading down these ladder lines, not across them.
02:46Exactly.
02:47That's nice.
02:49The Spanish just need to keep moving.
02:52Try and keep foiling at all costs and at the very least keep one hull up in the air.
02:57You see that angle that Stevie's talking about?
02:58They're almost parallels.
03:00They'll make their way over that lay line and maybe...
03:02Here comes another manoeuvre.
03:03Put the wing down.
03:06I think they're just turning down.
03:07At some stage, Todd, it's all very well going fast.
03:10But if you're not going fast towards the gate, then it's just fast for the sake of it.
03:14The whole thing is about making progress towards these gates.
03:17Australia, they're going fast, but they're making no progress towards the gate.
03:21So it's always a balancing act.
03:22Do I sail more distance fast, less distance slower?
03:25But we can hear the heightened voices on board the Spanish boat.
03:28They need to calm the tempo down, try and get sailing smoothly.
03:32You've got a good lead here.
03:33Ladder lines show nearly 200-metre advantage.
03:36And they're now well lined up for gate two.
03:39Well, the good news is Spain has a near 200-metre advantage.
03:41The bad news is it is Australia sitting in second place.
03:44If anyone's going to find wind out of the course, it's going to be Tom Slingsby and the Aussies.
03:51I'll try to protect them.
03:54They're going to be faster than us here.
03:56So the Australians and the Danish are in a bit of a private battle, which is great news for the Spanish.
04:01It's going to be a good, loose lead for Diego and the crew here.
04:07Frank Cordona, the strategist as well.
04:09He works on the grinding position.
04:10He works a bit of a tactician with Nicole.
04:13They're constantly thinking about what the plan is here to do.
04:16And, well, look at it at the moment.
04:18They look nicely set up.
04:19That's a big, big lead.
04:20200-metre ahead and going twice the speed of the boat behind.
04:24I'd be pretty happy if I was a tactician on that boat right now.
04:26Like three of six here in the event final of the Oracle Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix.
04:31The first time Sail GP has come to Southern California and Spain looking to make history.
04:37Cinderella story.
04:38The first time they've made it into an event final.
04:40And what would that be like for them if they could get the win?
04:44Right now they just need to keep it simple.
04:46Be careful on all of those boundaries.
04:48This is not the time for them to get a penalty and make any unforced errors.
04:53Well, the French aren't out there in this race.
04:55So that's good news for the Spanish as they struggled to avoid them in the last race.
04:59But there we go.
05:00Nice manoeuvre by the Spanish.
05:01And we can see they're stretching off up into fresh wind.
05:05They've made nice progress out of that bottom gate, gate two.
05:09They're leg three or six.
05:10So we're still early on in the race.
05:12But that's a big, big lead.
05:13Slingsby's closed the door on the Danes.
05:15So now it's a question.
05:17Can the Australians find enough wind to get on the foils and close the gap to those Spanish boats?
05:27Don't count out the Australians just yet.
05:30Slingsby trying to solve this conundrum right now.
05:35The Danes in the background in third.
05:36And look at that kelp, Stevie.
05:38Yeah, that kelp on there.
05:39That's just all drag.
05:40That's just slowing you down.
05:41It's hard to avoid out here as we see there.
05:44Look at it.
05:44Wrapped round the foil.
05:45It's all extra drag.
05:47Slowing them down.
05:47There we go.
05:49High-tech innovations on board the Australian boat.
05:51A stick to push the weed off.
05:53There we go.
05:54No.
05:54Fowler doing a nice bit of work there.
05:56That man is the Swiss Army nice of Australian sailing team.
06:00He'll fix your problems if you've got them.
06:02We're attacking to nothing here.
06:03Just careful.
06:04Yeah.
06:04I'm sure of angle.
06:05Chopper puff.
06:06Didn't you say we're attacking to nothing?
06:07Hang up, please.
06:08You've got to have it above the pod.
06:10Head to head here.
06:11We can see just how much faster the Spanish are currently going.
06:1526.6 kilometers an hour average speed compared to 20 for the Australians and Danish team.
06:22Just stretching their lead away.
06:23This could be a huge day for Spanish sailing.
06:28The first time they make an event final.
06:30And, Stevie, they are on the precipice of possibly winning this event here in Los Angeles.
06:35Well, there's a lot of talent on board that boat.
06:37Don't you worry about that.
06:39Diego and Florian sailed together in the 49er.
06:42Diego narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal in Japan.
06:45So close to that.
06:46But, yeah, this would be one of the biggest moments in their sailing career.
06:49It's probably the biggest moment in their sailing career by far.
06:52So don't be surprised if some nerves come in as this race goes on.
06:57And we can't forget that in that last race, they were only seconds away from not even making this final.
07:03Well, we're in Hollywood, aren't we?
07:07It's the land of the story.
07:08Fairytale moments, perhaps, for the Spanish crew.
07:11But right now, well, 450 meters ahead of the Australians.
07:15I think they're going to be pretty hard to catch from here.
07:19But one gust of wind, get yourself foiling, and these distances can change really, really quickly.
07:24Interesting to see if Lisa sees anything like that coming down on the water.
07:28Lisa, what can you tell us?
07:33You're down on the water as the Spanish continue to pull away from the Australians and the Danes.
07:40Well, there are gusts out here that you can catch, but they're very thin,
07:44which means you need to take your opportunity when you're in them,
07:47which is what we saw the Spanish did.
07:49From where I'm seeing now, Australia have actually popped up on the foils going up there,
07:53so they took that opportunity.
07:55They're going to come head-to-head with the Spanish now going on a different leg of the course.
08:01Here we go.
08:02Can Slingsby line himself up to make it hard with the Spanish here?
08:05No, he spins around in front.
08:07Pretty fair play by the Australians.
08:09Kept it clear of the Spanish there, and they've fallen off the foils.
08:13They've closed a bit of distance, but it's still a massive lead for the Spanish boat.
08:18And for Slingsby now, it's about can he find the next patch of wind?
08:22Because look at the speed, the Danish are in there. There is opportunity to foil out there.
08:26Can you find it? Can the Spanish find it?
08:28Yeah, I think so.
08:28So this is like four of six. Spain is heading downwind.
08:32Australia and Denmark are heading upwind.
08:34This will be a great opportunity. Look at the speeds coming up on Spain.
08:37and now over 34 kilometres an hour.
08:41Yeah, we're on board, eh?
08:43Have you been more? Wait?
08:45Sure.
08:46Stand by.
08:48Good comms on board, that Spanish boat.
08:50Interesting to hear it's in English.
08:51That's so interesting to hear their communication,
08:53but it sounds a lot calmer on this leg than it did last time.
08:56I think they're relaxing into the race.
08:57They're starting to feel a bit more confident.
09:01And Slingsby there.
09:02Can we get foiling before we hit the lull?
09:04Crucial that the Australians get on the foil
09:06within the next ten seconds here
09:08to have any hope of closing the gap on the Spanish.
09:12That's what he said here.
09:13We've got a chance on Spain, he said here.
09:15Slingsby's not giving up hope.
09:17We've heard from Tash there.
09:18Good breeze on this downwind.
09:19We are seeing around 17 kilometres an hour of pressure.
09:23They're foiling.
09:23They're foiling on board Australia now.
09:25Can they nail two foiling manoeuvres on this downwind leg?
09:29If they do, I think they'll have a shot at the Spanish boat.
09:32Australia's travelling almost 50 kilometres an hour.
09:36Spain at the bottom end of the course.
09:37They are at 10 kilometres an hour.
09:39Both holes in the water.
09:40The chase is on.
09:42Here we go.
09:43Watch for this.
09:43Hull on the left-hand side of the screen.
09:45Does it stay out of the water?
09:46Yes, it does.
09:47They've stayed foiling through the first one.
09:49Have they?
09:50Pump it.
09:50No, they haven't.
09:54They're not.
09:54Oh, they have.
09:54It's going to get very soft to the Slingers.
09:56And now we're going to get through this.
09:58Slingers says they are going to get through it.
10:00But we can see now the Australians.
10:02They're up and foiling again here.
10:04But are they heading down the course?
10:05No, they're not heading down the course at the moment.
10:08They're foiling, but they're not making progress towards that gate.
10:11It's all about getting towards the gate.
10:12Denmark are back in it here.
10:14Spain are parked at the bottom of the course.
10:16Can these two boats stay on the foils down here?
10:19The lead now less than 300 meters.
10:21It was almost 500 meters.
10:23Spain just now getting around the bottom gate.
10:25And they are creeping around it.
10:27They are going to hope for some of that breeze that Lisa Darman had talked about to be on
10:30the left side of the course.
10:32Right away with Australia.
10:33Rockwall-Denmark have made the overtake.
10:36Great work by the Danish crew here.
10:38But they slam the door on Australia.
10:40And these two fighting is good news for Spain.
10:42But can Rockwall-Denmark get back on the foil?
10:46Fine luck win leg coming here, Todd.
10:48There's not a lot of time for these two boats to catch up.
10:51And they are all battling it out.
10:53The Spanish still averaging the highest speed.
10:56But the Aussies and Danish improving every minute.
11:01Ser Hestet's done a nice job on this downwind leg.
11:03It was all talk about Australia.
11:05But they nailed that first manoeuvre.
11:07Closed the door here.
11:09And can they stay foiling?
11:10He's spoiling the course.
11:11Well, you've got to roll the dice at this point.
11:13It's time to have a little pop.
11:14See if they can find a lucky gust.
11:16And it will be a lucky gust if he finds it.
11:18Because he's been forced that way.
11:20Ser Hestet's charging.
11:21And the gap's coming down with the Spanish here at the moment.
11:24Less than 100 metres now.
11:25Spain is going so slow.
11:27And Denmark has found the speed.
11:29Denmark's at 21.
11:30Remember the magic number's 30.
11:32A little patience.
11:33A little patience.
11:35Words from Nikolai Sestet there.
11:39Okay.
11:39Pressing one then.
11:40Here we go.
11:40The Danish are going to try.
11:42They're pressing for a foil here.
11:43If they can get foil, it could be good.
11:45But the Spanish, well, perfectly set up.
11:47All boats go in the same direction.
11:49That's what you want if you're Spain.
11:51You want the other boats to have to leapfrog you.
11:53To magically pass you.
11:54So the Spanish tactically well positioned.
11:58But Denmark pop up on the foils.
11:59Here they go.
12:01Gone the right way for pressure here.
12:04Tom Johnson.
12:05He's trimming that big wing sail here.
12:06Catch it there.
12:07She's got her head out the boat.
12:08Look at her.
12:09She's trying to scan for breeze.
12:10They're foiling on board Denmark.
12:12Look at the distance coming down.
12:13Spain, they try to foil.
12:15They're up in the air.
12:16Can they stay up in the air?
12:17Look at the speed difference at the moment.
12:19Down to 75 metres.
12:20And when they come back together, Denmark will have the right of way.
12:24If the gap closes enough, it's advantage Denmark.
12:28So it comes down to this.
12:29The final 200 metres.
12:30And then it's gate number five.
12:31Who's going to blink first?
12:32It's Spain in first.
12:34Denmark makes the turn.
12:35All about the quality of this manoeuvre.
12:38Denmark are off the foils.
12:39Spain, oh, they stuffed the bow in.
12:41They've put the bow down too hard there.
12:44Can either of these boats get back on the foils?
12:46Tactically good sailing by the Spanish.
12:48trying to put themselves to block the wind getting through to Rockwall, Denmark.
12:53If you can take their wind away, it's hard for them to get up and foiling again.
12:56So they'll make that right-hand turn.
12:57It's going to be close.
12:58A race to get back up on the foils here.
13:01Both teams flying one hull.
13:03Not yet up on the foils, but the Spanish are looking to be building speed.
13:07Spain have got it here, Todd.
13:10Spain have got it.
13:11Here's the turn.
13:12Here's the turn.
13:14Wow, what a moment for this young Spanish crew here, Todd.
13:16They turned the bow, 100-meter lead again.
13:19They stayed calm when it mattered most.
13:22I don't see an overtaking opportunity for Denmark here.
13:25Look at this, the speed's coming up again.
13:27Are we getting H1 here?
13:28Yep.
13:29H1, and it is Spain.
13:31They get through the gate.
13:33They can see the finish line.
13:34And for the first time in SAIL GP history, the young team from Spain will bring it home.
13:40And they will claim the victory here in Los Angeles.
13:44Spain is the winner of the Oracle Los Angeles SAIL Grand Prix.
13:48Oh, great job by Bottin and his crew.
13:51Vamos, Spain.
13:53Come on.
13:54What a job.
13:55Come on.
13:56Come on.
13:57You can see how much it means to this young team.
14:01They have been building up to this for so long and had a difficult journey to get there,
14:05but have made some huge gains.
14:07What a time for Spanish sport.
14:09The youngster, Carlos Alcaraz, won Wimbledon last weekend.
14:12This young Spanish crew winning here.
14:14Inspirational stuff for the Spanish sports people.
14:17The celebration is on across Spain and in the south land of California.
14:23Spain has come to Los Angeles, and they have picked up the win.
14:27Denmark will take second, and Australia will bring it home for third.
14:31What a performance by the young Spanish team.
14:40Oh, man.
14:41I tell you what, Stevie.
14:42They get the win, and it wasn't against any slouches.
14:45You go up against Tom Slingsby.
14:46Nicolai Sandstedt, and they came out on top.
14:49A great start and just kept their patience throughout the race.
14:53Yeah, I mean, they made a great start, and then they made very, very few mistakes from there.
14:57And, well, the Spanish did a great job.
15:01Apologies for any language you might have heard at the end there,
15:03but, yeah, the Spanish did sail very well in that race.
15:05They did a nice job.
15:10And the Spanish will begin the celebration throughout the rest of the day here in Los Angeles.
15:15They will remember this one for a long time as they prepare to make the turn over to Europe
15:20as SailGP looks to event number three, which will be in France.
15:25And soon enough, Stevie, they will be in Cadiz, Spain, and their home waters.
15:29Yeah, momentum's a beautiful thing.
15:31It's about how they can use that now.
15:33What a start to season four for the Spanish crew.
15:35Enjoy the moment, guys.
15:44Wow, what a race.
15:45There were moments in there where it looked like Spain was going to give it away.
15:48It looked like Tom Slingsby was up to his old tricks.
15:51He was going to track them down.
15:52But, Stevie, as they made that turn at the bottom gate and came back up,
15:55Spain, almost dead in the water,
15:57somehow found a way to get that boat up and foiling.
15:59We'll see you next time.
