00:00Bienvenue à l'APRE SAIL POST SHOW, l'ITM New Zealand SAIL Grand Prix.
00:04Ce weekend nous avons eu. Un présentement action, drama.
00:08Il s'est allé en depuis le début de l'année 1.
00:10Et nous allons voir les highlights de l'action qu'on a eu l'honneur.
00:18Day 1 de l'ITM New Zealand SAIL Grand Prix.
00:21Strong, gusty winds, avec un petit racecourse,
00:23ont tous les équipes de la haie alerte.
00:24Hold on, hold on.
00:25We'll get it.
00:27Northstar, I'm going to take evasive action out there.
00:30Can I see them?
00:33Tighten the pack.
00:34Emirates GBL will drive it like you stole it, Dylan Fletcher.
00:38Oh, he's brilliant out of the middle by Rourke Warch,
00:41but it's a sprint now.
00:42Bond's Flying Roos, Slingsby's got the hammer down.
00:46Bond's Flying Roos, Black Foils and DS Team France
00:48were separated by just inches on leg three.
00:52Slingsby split away and found the pressure to give the Aussies the edge
00:55they needed to separate them from the pack.
00:58Now right now it is the Bond's Flying Roos,
01:00the three-time champions.
01:01They are out in front, guys.
01:02You've got DS Team France sitting in second.
01:05As the Bond's Flying Roos gets the Emirates winning moment
01:08here on day number one, race number one.
01:11France fought hard for second,
01:13and New Zealand had to settle for third.
01:15Very nice, guys.
01:17Just early on board the Swiss.
01:19Artemis racing at the top.
01:21They're going to be able to absolutely drop the hammer.
01:23Race two saw Artemis try to get across the top of the fleet,
01:26but Mubadla Brazil's inside line gave them the advantage
01:28until the bottom gate.
01:29And at mark number one, that is a thing of beauty.
01:32All 13 teams racing for the whole shot
01:35as Mubadla Brazil and Los Gallos out in front.
01:39The reigning champions bounced back from a poor race one
01:41and clawed back valuable places.
01:43Look at this here.
01:44Emirates GBR ninth to second.
01:46And if you can overtake boats on a day like today,
01:48you're going to be doing pretty well.
01:51But Artemis are going to dive inside here.
01:53They have got the right of way.
01:56Outridge, I can put money on it,
01:58will have put a protest on Los Gallos there.
02:00He's tried to dive inside.
02:01He had the right of way.
02:03That'll be interesting how that one goes
02:04because that looked very, very tight.
02:06And the Emirates winning moment goes to the home team.
02:09The Blackfoils take the win in race two.
02:16Canfield out of the top of the line.
02:18Absolutely on fire.
02:19And Phil Robertson at the bottom.
02:20It should be Red Bull Italy that lead at mark one from here.
02:25And as they approach mark number one here in race number three,
02:28Phil Robertson coming awfully close.
02:30And the Blackfoils collide with DS Team France.
02:34Racing abandoned.
02:36Two athletes were sent to hospital.
02:38The safety team secured the crew and the F50s,
02:41ending the day in Auckland.
02:44Well, yeah, I'm joined here in the studio with Hannah,
02:47obviously co-commentator.
02:48And I mean, you know, what an end to the day yesterday, Hannah.
02:52Yeah, day one was full of action, wasn't it?
02:54We had top-end conditions, 13 boats on a really tight racetrack.
02:57The first two races, we had close quarters races.
03:00We had so many near misses, crosses,
03:03lots of position changes going on, but some really epic racing.
03:06But I think the story of the day from day one was obviously
03:09that crash collision between DS Team France and the Blackfoils.
03:14Real shame to see two injuries, but we wish the best to both of those athletes.
03:18But it just goes to show that balance between pushing the boats really hard
03:22and finding where the limit is.
03:24And on that first reach to Mark 1, the boats are so close together.
03:28They're reaching the top speeds that they'll see on the course.
03:30And just a couple of areas there leading to that collision, unfortunately.
03:33Yeah, I mean, I think it's so important to remember, isn't it?
03:35They're true racers, aren't they?
03:36And yeah, it would be a crime not to look back at that in a little bit more detail.
03:40So I think we're going to go and take a look at it.
03:42We've sort of broken it down, a few pauses in it,
03:44and we first see the boats coming off the start line here.
03:48We can see them lined up. Bottom of the line, we've got Italy in here,
03:51we've got New Zealand, and we've got France.
03:53And they're going to be the people here.
03:56We can see Italy are well lined up.
03:58They've got the downwind end of the line.
03:59They're going to be fastest coming.
04:00But the boats are pretty well parted at the moment.
04:02You can see there, you can see right at this moment in time,
04:05you've got Italy, you've got France, and then you've got the Blackfoils in the middle.
04:07And as we pause it here, the Blackfoils are aiming straight at the mark.
04:10Big gap between them and Italy, and they're actually forward of France.
04:13They've broken that overlap, but they want to try and push, push, push.
04:18Can they get themselves over the top of Italy and drive things in?
04:21At this point, as they push, they get very high on the ride hut,
04:24and look at the gauge closed down between the two boats.
04:27It's a massive over-height there.
04:29They get over-height, they get a big leeway slide.
04:31All that white spray, that's just air ventilating around the foils, no grip.
04:35And then as it does grip, well, it turns up and the boat stops really, really aggressively.
04:40And, of course, that was it. Massive moment on things there, Hannah.
04:43And it just happened so quickly, didn't it?
04:45It was all well lined up, and they were well positioned, the Blackfoils, really.
04:48Should have been second, probably just in behind the Italians at the mark.
04:51But pushing that a little bit too high, and you just lose that sideways grip.
04:55Yeah, that's right. And like you say, the margins are really, really fine.
04:57What they were trying to do was really make sure that they had the inside line at Mark 1,
05:01so they could pull off that manoeuvre and jibe away from the fleet just as they got to the mark.
05:05But in doing that, a lot of the teams, if you listen to the onboard comms, they have a push
05:09mode.
05:10So they're really trying to lift the boat as high out of the water as they can,
05:13giving them the best chance to be as quick as possible, essentially.
05:17But the tolerances they're operating within are so tiny, and in these gusty, changeable conditions,
05:21it's really hard to find where that limit is.
05:24And I think just riding too high, lifting the rudders too hard out of the water,
05:27Pete Berling would have lost control of the rudder.
05:29And that's where you see the boat spin up, with the French just having no time to react to that.
05:33Yeah, I think it's important. To me, it was a pure racing incident.
05:36It was racers that are used to winning World Olympic champions pushing,
05:41and they just pushed a little bit too high.
05:43And as you say, when you're going that fast, there's already kind of quite a negative setting to the lift
05:48on the foil.
05:48And so as soon as it does let go and the boat sort of starts skidding,
05:51then the foil system just won't let you bring back down,
05:54because it's already sort of trying to do as much as it can.
05:56And then, yeah, when it all gripped, it went really scary, didn't it?
06:00Really, really scary. And that meant that at the end of the first day,
06:03well, of course, our thoughts were with Louis and Manon primarily.
06:06And we're glad to hear that they're, you know, on the road to recovery at the moment.
06:10Our thoughts totally with them, really more than anything here.
06:13But it did mean there had to be a rethink looking into day two.
06:17So we talk about unprecedented.
06:18Well, actually, we've been practicing it, haven't we, in rehearsals and looking at it.
06:22But we ended up with a split fleet scenario as the fleet and sail GP is growing.
06:25You know, the league is growing, there's more and more boats.
06:27We split the fleet. And, you know, what was the thinking behind that, do you think?
06:30Well, I think with the wind direction we had here in Auckland, it was coming straight off the city.
06:34And with the shape of the harbour, it was kind of limited space with how big the race course could
06:38be.
06:39And so one of the options to create a bit more space on the course was essentially to reduce the
06:44number of boats racing at any one time.
06:45So split fleet racing is something we typically see on a Friday in practice racing just to give the boats
06:50a little bit more time and opportunity to figure out the course without perhaps racing so close to a number
06:56of other boats.
06:56But the first time we've seen it implemented for real on a Super Sunday.
07:00And I think it worked really well with the conditions we had today.
07:04It was top end conditions again.
07:06Again, the fleet was really compressed in terms of the space we could use for the course.
07:10And so it just opened things up and just created a little bit more space for all the teams on
07:14the course.
07:15Yeah, I think if you want to take this sort of stadium-style racing to different venues, you've got to
07:18be adaptable like that.
07:19A bigger course, you can have more boats on it because there is naturally a bit more space.
07:23But it was a really tight thing.
07:25One thing I found quite interesting was you've got to then take the results from the first day, which had
07:30France at the top of the leaderboard,
07:32and had the Blackfills even with their penalties still in fourth.
07:34And that meant that you end up with a bit of a make-up in the groups.
07:37And I think one thing we might see going forward if this does happen is you end up with two
07:41quite different groups.
07:42You've got Emirates, GBR, Germany, Deutsche Bank, Mubadla, Brazil, North Star and Italy because the Blackfills and France couldn't race.
07:48And then you had what I felt was a bit of a super group at the bottom there with the
07:51Bonds Flying Roos, Artemis, Rockwall.
07:53You know, I mean, it was a packed group, that Group B, wasn't it?
07:56Yeah, it was. And I think if we see this a little bit more, then hopefully that would even out.
08:00But it came down to the results on day one.
08:03So the teams were kind of, it was in their own hands, which groups they put themselves in really.
08:07But I think it might be something that we see a little bit more often in some of those tighter
08:10race courses.
08:11Yeah, I mean, it certainly was room for thought, wasn't it?
08:13And, well, you know, as much as it was tight and there was a bit of a group of, you
08:17know, of doom or whatever you want to call it,
08:19it was like the super group anyway, but it was the cream really that rise to the top.
08:23And, you know, and as we looked at that final race, the top three boats.
08:27Well, it's the only three champions in CLGP that made it, wasn't it?
08:30It was the Bonds Flying Roos. They got through to the final and they were pretty imperious all weekend, really.
08:34You know, they came out, won the first race, had to have this sort of super sub in it.
08:39But them, the Spanish, the British, they're the three champions that we've seen in CLGP.
08:43And we're going to look back at the highlights here.
08:45And at the start, the Spanish really, Hannah, they had control. It was an amazing job.
08:49And we just had this huge rain school come in, big breeze.
08:52Yeah. And the breeze had been kind of up and down all day, but this was definitely the most breeze
08:55that we'd seen across the day.
08:57Really top end conditions for that first leg to mark one.
08:59So the Spanish really having to manage that risk reward.
09:02They're always keen to lead at mark one, but sometimes we've seen in the final,
09:05it's actually doesn't always pay to lead because you've got to be the first boat to make that decision.
09:09Sometimes it's a little bit easier to be second or third, and then you can see how the cards lie
09:13for you.
09:14But really difficult conditions to sail the boat.
09:15And as we can see, GBR here just having a little bit of a hard time at one of the
09:19turn-ups in the final.
09:20Yeah, I mean, I absolutely loved it as a race because there was so much going on.
09:23But this was the moment the wind just started to drop a bit.
09:25All three boats there within 50 metres right here.
09:28But it was the Aussies that cut the corner.
09:29And this was really, I think Slingsby, you know at some point you've got to take a risk.
09:33You can't be too conservative all the way.
09:35If you want to win it, you've got to go and do it.
09:36And that was when he really pushed.
09:38Yeah, and you know, for Bonds Flying Roos, they haven't won an event since last year in Auckland.
09:42So really amazing to see them back on top.
09:44And I'm sure they'll be super happy with the way to start the second event of the season.
09:47Yeah, well, it's been a lot of pressure.
09:49Bonds Flying Roos, new brand.
09:51And we get to talk to Tom Slingsby, finally back winning.
09:56The last event we won was here in Auckland last year.
09:59So yeah, it's been a long time between drinks.
10:02And yeah, it feels like we've been knocking on the door.
10:05We've had so many podiums and then unable to execute in the final.
10:08But that last race, it had it all really.
10:12We had a squall come through the race and it was just basically keeping the boat on its feet for
10:17a little.
10:17And then the wind died off and you're able to push again.
10:19And yeah, it was a good race.
10:21I mean, we're all so tight there for a lot of it.
10:22So we're happy that we just got clear and we're able to get the wind.
10:25It looks super tricky.
10:27Obviously, you mentioned the squall.
10:28It was blowy.
10:29What's the secret to sailing in those conditions and what you have to focus on?
10:32There's not much of a secret.
10:33We were sort of saying around that start time and at one point in that race,
10:37it was the windiest we've ever sailed in in these boats.
10:39So we don't really know what we're doing.
10:41But it was just like, it was amazing.
10:44You could just sort of, it felt like you were going to get blown over.
10:46And so you had to be really safe before you bore the boat away.
10:50You had to get everything lined up, tick all the boxes.
10:53And then you'd go into a bear away and do close to a hundred k's an hour.
10:56And, but it was a lot of fun.
10:59Yeah.
10:59I mean, what a race it was, Hannah.
11:01Effectively at the start of that race, you know, there was,
11:02they just had like a thousand horsepower potentially there.
11:05And if they put it all down, they weren't going anywhere.
11:06They were just going to spin out of control.
11:07And I think you really sort of saw the experience and maturity on that boat.
11:11You know, Glenn Ashby coming in, done it all before.
11:13Jason Waterhouse, Tash Bryant.
11:14I mean, they know how to win, but it is managing the power.
11:17It's not putting it all on the line at one moment.
11:19Yeah, absolutely.
11:20And we've said this a couple of times before, but it's all about managing that risk versus reward.
11:24And that's something I think that the Bonds Flying Roots do really well.
11:27Tom Slingsby is always going to be aggressive, but he does seem to know when to push, when to hold
11:31back.
11:32And when the conditions are so changeable, top end conditions, but sometimes it drops off a little bit more.
11:36I just feel like he was really on top of those conditions today and ultimately got the ultimate kind of
11:42win for it.
11:42Yeah. Well, yeah.
11:43And like you say, whole year.
11:44I mean, pretty, again, we talk about unprecedented.
11:46I'm pretty unprecedented Tom Slingsby not winning for a whole year.
11:49So, I mean, it was, it was a brilliant comeback for the Australian team.
11:52Emmerich, GBR, they're there again. And as we actually take a look at the championship standings,
11:56and we look in a bit more detail at the points as they come away from here.
11:59Well, it is the Bonds Flying Roots at the top by virtue of the fact that they've won this last
12:03event.
12:04And then we can see here, we can see Fletcher in second.
12:07We see that DS Automobile, despite what has been quite a seriously sort of active start to the year, they're
12:14in third.
12:14And perhaps that's the big story for the next, you know, we've got one weekend off and then we're heading
12:19down to Sydney.
12:20And of course, Slingsby got to be feeling on form, primarily.
12:23It's got to be a sort of big event for him.
12:25But then for the French, can they be ready for it?
12:27And already you start looking at Northstar Rockwall in that mid-pack fight there with Red Bull Italy and the
12:33pressure on.
12:33And well, Burling and the Blackfoils, I'm worried that that's their season done.
12:37I mean, you know, I mean, it's really sad to say for what I, well, I've picked them twice as
12:42the team to win.
12:43So, I mean, maybe it's my fault the commentators curse.
12:45Yeah.
12:46Well, I know we've said thank you to the tech team a number of times, but I think they've, you
12:51know, got plenty of work on to fix all of the damage that was created this weekend.
12:55So hopefully we'll see those teams back on the water as soon as possible.
13:00But I think for the Bonds Flying Roos and Emirates GBR, dream start to the season.
13:04Some of those teams that are more mid-table, we're two of three of these Southern Hemisphere events now.
13:10So they're going to be asking questions.
13:12The performance as the season goes on is going to be in question.
13:15So they've got to raise their game.
13:16The season can get away from you really quickly.
13:18So it's all about building that momentum and picking your way up the leaderboard.
13:22Yeah, picking your way up.
13:23And I just think, you know, have you sailed in Sydney?
13:25I've only sailed there once.
13:26I mean, I think of it a bit cheesy, but it's like sailing's theatre of dreams.
13:29To me, it's like the dream place to sail.
13:32So a sail F-50 there, I mean, the sailors must be just absolutely buzzing to get over there.
13:35Oh, yeah, for sure.
13:36I mean, my first SailGP event was in Sydney back in season two.
13:40And the amphitheatre that's created, the number of people that hit the water to come and watch,
13:45is just unbelievable.
13:47Australians, huge sailing fans.
13:48So I think for the Bronze Flying Roots heading into another home event,
13:51massive motivation for them.
13:52But it's always one of the best stops on the calendar.
13:54And I can't wait for it.
13:55Yeah, that's right.
13:56We've just got one weekend off, one weekend to wait.
13:59And then we've got the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix.
14:03And yeah, I mean, I cannot wait to get down there and see the F-50s tearing up the harbour.
14:11This summer, the world's fastest race on water comes to the famous Harbour City.
14:16SailGP is back for the seventh time in this iconic venue.
14:19Perfection from Slingsby!
14:21For iconic racing.
14:23New teams, new rivalries.
14:25Witness Tom Slingsby and his three-time SailGP champions,
14:29the Bonds Flying Roots, take on the world's best.
14:32It will all come down to a winner-takes-all final.
14:35Don't miss out.
