03:11forces their hand to move.
03:16Get penalised or cause contact.
03:19It all comes down to strategy, positioning,
03:23racecourse boundaries and pressure from other boats.
03:32Whether it's fighting for the inside line,
03:34staying in clean air or setting up the next move,
03:37the best teams are always thinking two steps ahead.
03:40Perfectly positioning the boat for whatever's coming next.
03:44I've said a lot about what these moves are,
03:47but what does it actually take to pull one off?
03:50Let's break it down.
03:53We'll start with tacks and jibes.
03:55These are the moments when the boat turns through or away from the wind
03:58and the crew has to switch sides mid-flight.
04:02It's like a perfectly choreographed dance,
04:04but of course, at 80kmph, it's not so easy.
04:07As the call comes in, the wing trimmer grind to one
04:12and usually the strategist sprint to the other side of the boat.
04:16Yes, sprint.
04:18They need to be across before the driver starts the turn.
04:21Miss that timing and you risk getting caught mid-transition
04:24and the launch across the boat.
04:26Once that turn begins, a lot happens.
04:31The flight controller drops the foils that's up into the water.
04:35The driver begins steering through the turn.
04:38One of the crew, this varies boat to boat, inverts the wing,
04:41flipping it from one tack to the other,
04:44a crucial move to manage power through the turn.
04:46While all this is happening,
04:49the flight controller is still head down
04:51and managing how high and stable the boat gets,
04:54ensuring the boat doesn't fall out of the sky.
04:57The wing trimmer pulls in the wing
04:59to power it up out of the manoeuvre.
05:01Then the strategist, now up on the new side,
05:04often jumps on steering duties momentarily.
05:08Then the final touches begin.
05:10The wing trimmer lifts the old foil out of the water.
05:12The driver runs across to take the wheel on the new side,
05:16just as the second grinder joins.
05:19The driver now takes over flight control via the wheel,
05:22while finally the flight controller runs across
05:25and resets on the new side.
05:28That's a lot going on.
05:29And by the way, this all needs to happen in seconds.
05:33Get it wrong and the boat crashes off its foils,
05:36loses all speed, or worse, a full wipeout.
05:39When teams have all the time in the world,
05:43this choreography is manageable.
05:45But under pressure, approaching a boundary,
05:48dodging another boat,
05:49or lining up for a gate,
05:51it's a scramble, and all has to happen in seconds.
05:55Right, take your breath.
05:59If you think that was difficult,
06:01let's talk about the fairway.
06:02This is one of the most intense, high-risk manoeuvres inside a GP,
06:07and it happens right as the F-50s hit their top speed
06:10at the most crowded place on the racetrack,
06:13Mark 1.
06:15As teams turn away from the wind,
06:17the wind gets behind the wing and sends them flying.
06:21But sometimes the flying ends up in the water.
06:24As the boat accelerates,
06:25two things happen at once.
06:27More wind flows over the wing,
06:29generating extra power,
06:31and more water rushes over the foils,
06:33increasing lift, pushing the boat higher.
06:36To nail a bear away,
06:37three crew members play a critical role.
06:40And the number one goal is a stable platform.
06:44The driver needs to turn the boat just right.
06:46It needs to be smooth, not too aggressive,
06:49so that both the flight controller and wing trimmer can keep up.
06:52Too sharp, and the boat will trip over itself.
06:55The wing trimmer is managing the power.
06:58As the boat gets faster,
06:59they take just enough speed off to not tip over,
07:02but not too much that they drop off entirely.
07:06Balance is everything,
07:08and the boat needs to stay flat and fast.
07:11The flight controller is under huge pressure at this moment.
07:14As the nose turns downwind, the speed ramps up.
07:18The foils start generating massive lift.
07:21The flight controller must keep the boat from flying too high,
07:23but they also don't want the front of the boat to touch and lose speed.
07:28Often, you'll see the boat launching into the air like a rocket,
07:32and then it'll nosedive straight into the water.
07:35It's split-second coordination.
07:37One miscalculation,
07:39and the crashes are painful for those on board,
07:41but spectacular for us fans.
07:43The brother of the bear-away is the round-up.
07:47This move happens as teams round the gates to head back up the course,
07:51what we call upwind.
07:53Like a bear-away, the round-up comes with a surge of power,
07:56but this time, they're turning into the wind.
07:59And once again,
08:01the driver, wing trimmer, and flight controller
08:03need to be in perfect sync.
08:04As the driver starts to turn,
08:07the wing trimmer has to catch the boat,
08:09managing a sudden rush of power,
08:11followed by a drop in power.
08:13This is a big moment for the grinders.
08:15You'll see them smashing the handles,
08:17pulling in the wing sheet,
08:18trying to time it to that perfect moment
08:20when the boat hits its new angle
08:22and they can stabilise it.
08:23Turning up here in two,
08:25one, coming up.
08:27Meanwhile, the flight controller is under major stress.
08:30As the boat turns into the breeze,
08:32the foil on the leeward side travels a huge arc through the water,
08:36generating massive lift.
08:38They need to stay high enough to avoid dragging a hull,
08:41but not so high that the boat ranches out of control.
08:44Watch the speed as they come around.
08:46The Aussies put in a big dip.
08:48This is one of the most violent manoeuvres on the racetrack,
08:51with up to three Gs of force.
08:54And if they miss the mark,
08:55it's a full-blown rocket launch,
08:57followed by a nosedive into the ocean.
09:01It's all about reading the limit,
09:03trusting your crew,
09:04and committing with total coordination across the boat.
09:07Now we've nailed the manoeuvres,
09:09but imagine linking two of them together.
09:12That's where the top teams really show their class.
09:16Attack into a bear away.
09:19A jive straight into a round up.
09:22Back-to-back moves with barely a second to breathe.
09:26The coordination, timing, communication needed to pull that off
09:29without crashing, stalling, or losing speed.
09:33It's next level.
09:34It's not just about doing one manoeuvre well.
09:37It's about chaining them together with precision
09:39and, under pressure, a literal breakneck speed.
09:44That's what separates the best from the rest.
09:48Not only that,
09:49but each team builds their own playbook
09:51for getting around a racetrack.
09:53And when you've got only seconds to act,
09:55there's no time for long explanations.
09:57That's where codewords come in.
10:01You'll hear calls like,
10:03JK, that's a round up into attack.
10:06A flip-flop, a double jive at the bottom gate.
10:09An eagle, a move that requires two boards down to get to the mark.
10:13A dino, that's attack into a bear away.
10:16Thank you, guys.
10:16Too close.
10:17Each team develops their own secret language.
10:23Not just to streamline communication,
10:25but to keep their strategy hidden from rivals.
10:28With every other coach listening in on team comms,
10:31it's just like the NFL,
10:32calling plays with code that only their crew understands.
10:36It's fast,
10:37it's tactical,
10:38and it's all part of the game.
10:39Oh, no!
10:40We've got collision!
10:41So next time you're watching SailGP,
10:43remember,
10:43it's not just about flying fast in a straight line.
10:46It's about executing high-speed manoeuvres
10:48with surgical precision
10:49under brutal pressure
10:51for balancing power,
10:52coordination
10:53and split-second timing.
10:56This is Sailing on an Eye Fetch.
